Development of a new smelting process is risky. Many novel processes in the metals industry failed to fulfil the initial expectations of their inventors. Large sums of capital have been invested in technologies that either didn't provide a satisfactory return on investment, or didn't perform at all, and had to be replaced. One of the keys to success in process development is incremental scale up of the technology, with potential problems being identified and rectified as early as possible. In this way the cost of any rectification that is required can be minimized. The ISASMELTTM process was developed to maturity by Mount Isa Mines through the 1980's and 1990's using incremental scale up. Commercialization only occurred once the process had been proven on laboratory, pilot and demonstration scale over many years. As a result ISASMELTTM technology now operates successfully at numerous plants around the world. The methodical approach to development of the technology has allowed owners to modernise their existing operations or create new businesses with significantly reduced technical risk.

ZEBALLOS is a relatively new mining camp. It is on the west coast of Vancouver island, approximately 195 nautical miles northwestward from Victoria. Previous to 1934, a small amount of placer gold had been recovered from the Zeballos river and tributary creeks. However, it was not until the winter of 1934-35, when shipments of high-grade gold ore were made from the property of the White Star Gold Mines, Limited, that lode gold mining really began. Since then, several new mines and many promising prospects have been found. Milling in standard sized mills only commenced late in 1938, when the 75-ton mill of Privateer Mines, Limited, and the 50-ton mill of Spud Valley Gold Mines, limited, were first turned over. The most striking feature of the camp is the high-grade quality of the ore as usually mined. At one property, the ore along a drift 650 feet long has ranged from 5.8 ounces per ton to 17.5 ounces, over average vein-widths ranging from 8.3 inches to 14.5 inches in selected blocks along the drift. One . high-grade shipment of 196.6 pounds of ore from the same property contained 142.877 ounces of gold. The present paper deals only with that part of the area in which mining operations are most active, namely the main Zeballos River valley and its tributaries, Spud and Goldvalley creeks. During the summer of 1938, prospecting was carried on beyond this circumscribed area. The geology and early developments in the area have been described in the following reports: (1) CLOTHIER, G. The need to apply the latest available technology to develop better tools and methods to meet problems in the mining industry was recognized by six of Canada's leading mining companies. As a result, MIROC (Mining Industry Research Organization of Canada) was chartered to identify problem areas in Canadian mining and to have research carried out to develop the tools and equipment to meet these perceived needs. The initial activity of MIROC has been in the environmental field, with improved clothing and protective devices being developed by contractors. Work clothing for miners is now being field tested. Respiratory protection and a new personal light source combined in a new "space-age" helmet are about to be issued for testing. Further developmental work is being carried on to offer these units and probably other personal protective devices on an individual basis as well as in a combined package.

"This paper describes a guidance system for autonomous underground mining vehicles, which does not require any infrastructure or inertial positioning systems to aid the guidance process.BackgroundINCO Limited mines approximately ten million tons per annum through 12 operating mines in the Sudbury, Ontario, area (Fig. 1). With challenges from operating in a cyclical marketplace as well as new technologies making alternative nickel ores more competitive to refine, the Mines Research department embarked on a strategy that pointed toward automation as a tool to help the company become even more economical in mining.The mining industry has been looking for ways and means to mine orebodies more and more inexpensively. Automation and the lessons learned from manufacturing had a great influence in the direction of research at INCO Limited over the past ten years. Guidance systems have evolved over the years but the majority of commercially available systems rely on some form of infrastructure. This, in part, has caused some resistance from operators to install and maintain automated or semi-automated systems for guidance of underground machinery.Internal industrial studies cited travel time to and from the workplace as one of the major time sinks in the shift of underground miners. Depending on the mine, it may be as much as two hours moving in and out of an area. Some work areas have accommodated this by having “hot changes” at the work place. However, at some point in time, there are two people tasked with the same job and on site at the same time to make this overlap occur.Tele-operation of underground hard rock equipment eliminated this overlap and also provided a comfortable environment in which to work. By taking advantage of the communications network installed, the miners proved that they could operate three machines with relative ease. This was accomplished by a vision-based, “painted line,” autonomous guidance system termed the light rope system.With a few years’ experience with the system, some issues have arisen, including the cost of the rope itself (Fig. 2).The vehicle’s route is limited to the paths defined by the light rope, and a system of switching power to the light rope to select different routes is required. The rope itself is subject to damage from nearby blasts. Also, the system offers no obstacle detection; the vehicle may be switched off as a means of shutting the machine down thus protecting personnel in the area."

"The object of this study was three samples of sulfide old tailings, which were obtained after Cu- Zn ores processing. Fine metal dissemination in sulfides as well as fine mineral intergrowth determine the refractory nature of material and low metal extraction using simple methods: gravitation 1-6%, flotation 32-48%, cyanidation 10-37%, and cause the need to use sulfide bio-oxidation to liberate gold and to recover it by heap leaching. The gold is the main valuable metal in the tailings with content 1-1.5 g/t. Heap bio-oxidation with mesophilic and moderately thermophilic bacteria was used for pre-treatment of tailings before gold heap leaching from bio-oxidation solid residues. The tailings have a low permeability < 0.3-1.2 m/day, which is caused by migration of fine particles, decreases recovery rates, and is poorly suited to heap bacterial leaching. Therefore, preliminary gold sulfide tailings with permeability < 0.3 m/day were pelletized using copper containing flotation tailings of converter slags and calcium oxide. The most gold extraction was obtained for pelletized tailings. The base metals (copper and zinc) were precipitated from bacterial solutions. Experiments have demonstrated effective bio-oxidation of all third gold sulfide tailings samples and enough high gold extraction 60-82%.INTRODUCTIONIn Russia, as everywhere, there is a trend toward deterioration in the quality of mineral resources, including non-ferrous and precious metals, manifested in lower grade and higher complexity of ores. The proportion of refractory ores is increasing, characterized by fine dissemination of metals in sulfides, intergrowth, and poor liberation of minerals during concentration, resulting in loss of base and precious metals to flotation tailings.Over the operation period, huge reserves (hundreds of million tons) of ore processing waste have been accumulated at mining and concentration operations. Because of the imperfections of the previously used ore concentration technologies, the content of precious and base metals in flotation tailings is comparable with the grades of the ores being currently processed. Therefore, old tailings can be viewed as an additional reserve of non-ferrous and precious metals. The works (DEN, 1997; Lyman, Johnson, & Guerney, 2000) demonstrate that, tailings containing sulfides (sulfur, copper, zinc, and other metals) are a potential environmental hazard since they produce acid drainage water containing toxic components. Processing those tailings would require designing an effective technology for recovering useful components and protecting the environment."

"The possibility of SiO2 5N production by staged purification of ammonium hexafluosilicate (NH4)2SiF6 is discussed. High-purity silicon dioxide can be obtained with fluoridation of quartz concentrate by solid NH4F at 100 °C, with further sublimation of the product at 320 °C, its dissolution, ammonia hydrolysis, filtration and drying of SiO2•nH2O. This is accompanied by regeneration of the processing reagent - NH4F.INTRODUCTIONProduction of high-purity silica-5N (SiO2 content over 99.999%) is an important and urgent task of the modern chemical industry. This material is used in the manufacture of optical glass, optical fibers for internet cables, silicon for solar power and electronics.Quartz concentrate is raw material for the production of silicon dioxide. The existing technologies of synthetic silicon dioxide were introduced in the mid-twentieth century. These methods are energy-consuming, multi-step and do not meet stringent environmental requirements. In fact, as some conventional technologies became obsolete; it became necessary to develop new methods for the production of synthetic silica. We believe that the fluoride technology of processing of quartz materials by ammonium fluoride is the most promising direction.In industry, silicon dioxide marked ""Silica White"" is obtained by liquid-phase method. The method consists of the precipitation of amorphous silica from sodium silicate solutions with acids. The resulting product is filtered, washed and dried. Depending on the deposition conditions and nature of the coagulant the ""Silica White"" is acidic, neutral or alkaline. The dry product is subjected to grinding. The degree of dispersion and porosity of the particles of Silica White depends on the nature of decomposition agent (a substance that decomposes the silicate) and coagulant, conditions of sedimentation, filtration and drying. During the drying process the silica particles are sintered into aggregates of a few millimeters."

"The toxicity of arsenic is well known and documented; however, the presence of arsenic in copper electrorefining anodes and electrolytes is critically necessary to produce high-quality cathode. Arsenic as well as antimony and bismuth concentrations vary relative to their concentration in the anode copper received from the smelter. The behaviour and benefits of arsenic in copper electrorefining and the detrimental effects of antimony and bismuth on cathode quality and tankhouse performance are discussed. This will include the minimization and mitigation of problems associated with arsenic, antimony, and bismuth—including cathode contamination, floating slimes, scaling, and anode passivation.RÉSUMÉ La toxicité de l’arsenic est bien connue et documentée; toutefois, la présence d’arsenic dans les anodes de l’électroaffinage du cuivre et dans les électrolytes est d’une nécessité critique pour produire une cathode de grande qualité. Les concentrations en arsenic, ainsi qu’en antimoine et en bismuth varient selon leur concentration dans l’anode de cuivre reçue de la fonderie. A comminution circuit in recent history, is one of the most difficult parts of a mineral processing plant to design with confidence. It is usually the most costly part of a plant to build, and it can consume up to half or more of the energy used on a mine site. To suggest that comminution energy usage is sustainable in the long term is not possible at this time. What we have to choose from today, based on more than 50 years of experience, does include the best available technology, and the best way to design it. There is controversy in the industry as to how to properly approach the subject of comminution design, with many of the optional solutions requiring a level of training and expertise beyond the ability of a non-specialist engineer. Semi-autogenous grinding technology in particular, has not been properly appreciated because of many recent mistakes in its application and design, which have blurred the positive perception about what SAG technology is, how it can be used, and how it needs to be designed and built. In order to change this, mine owners and senior managers need to take responsibility for, and learn to understand the fundamental challenges that a comminution circuit poses to the project, to the design process, to the operators who use the equipment, and to the resulting metallurgy. This address is intended to summarize these challenges and offer fundamental engineering solutions, which are clear, specific and in a format which is directly applicable to the mining and mineral engineering community.

"This work investigates the early stages of precipitation in Al-Mg-Si alloys using a combination of high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Quenching from a high temperature (solution) treatment leaves an alloy in a high-energy unstable state, with solute and vacancies in supersaturation. Thus, already at room temperature (RT) a large driving force exists for solute atoms to cluster and order on the Al matrix positions. DFT calculations indicate that strain alleviation is important at this stage. We observe larger regions of Mg-dominated L10 ordering together with a Si-dominated ordering of smaller clusters in a particular geometry connected to the Si-network found in all the precipitates. In addition, building blocks of the main hardening phase ?'', stabilized by vacancies, are observed at higher, typical pre-aging temperatures.INTRODUCTION Al-Mg-Si (6xxx) alloys are widely used in industry due to a combination of favorable properties such as strength, ductility, corrosion resistance and lightweight. They undergo a complex production route, usually consisting of the following thermo-mechanical steps: casting, homogenization, extrusion or rolling, solution heat treatment (SHT) and artificial aging (AA). The SHT takes place at temperatures above the solvus line in the phase diagram, usually between 500°C and 570°C, followed by a rapid cooling to RT. This ensures that high amounts of solute atoms, uniformly distributed on the cubic face-centered (FCC) Al lattice, together with a large amount of vacancies, are quenched-in. The material is therefore in a super-saturated and unstable state. During the subsequent AA, at temperatures usually between 150°C and 220°C, the solute atoms diffuse and cluster, forming metastable precipitates with needle/ lath/ rod morphologies having the main growth direction along <100>Al. With a maximum alloy solute level (Mg + Si) of only 2%, these precipitates increase material strength up to three times that of pure Al, and are essential for the final material properties. To understand and make better use of this phenomenon, it is imperative to research the nature of the precipitates (such as their atomic structure), measure their key parameters (number density, size, volume fraction) and connect it to material properties (Marioara, Andersen, Zandbergen & Holmestad, 2005; Marioara et al., 2014). "The Mississagi quartzite is the basal formation of the Quirke Lake trough. As it is traced around the rim, a gradual change in dip is observed, as follows:Northwest corner 50 degrees south.Algom Quirke mine 34 degrees south.Quirke Lake 25 degrees south.Whiskey Lake 22 degrees west.Pecors Lake 25 degrees north.Algom Nordic mine 18 degrees north.Elliot Lake 11 degrees north.Pistol Lake 5-7 degrees west.Thus the apparent synclinal axis is a curving east-west line lying closer to the north limb than to the south. The axis appears to plunge west at about 5 degrees.The Huronian sediments lie on a basement of granites, gabbros, and volcanics. Diamond drill evidence indicates that this basement has a surface of peneplanation, and that the areas of soft basic rock have a smoother topography than the granite. For the most part the orebodies at the Quirke and Nordic mines overlie a basement of soft basic rock.The Mississagi formation is the host rock of the deposits, and its primary structures are suggestive of the conditions under which the conglomerate beds were deposited. Cross-bedding is common, although normal bedding varies from thick to thin to essentially lacking. Grain gradation is not common. Where coarse and fine grains occur together, the coarse tend to be more rounded than the fine. These features are characteristic of shallow-water deposits, laid down above the lower limit of wave action. Therefore, the quartz-pebble conglomerates probably represent ancient water courses, bays, beaches, and bars.The causes governing the creation of the trough can only be conjectured, but there is evidence that both subsidence and compressive stresses played active roles. Drag-folds in argillite beds near Whiskey Lake indicate compressive stress. On the other hand, gentle crumpling in thin-bedded limestones on Quirke Lake is probably due to pre-induration slumping and folding. If strong compression had been widespread within the trough, one would expect drag-folding and shearing of the incompetent beds to be more general. Two large-scale, fold-like structures were mapped by Collins, but their axes do not parallel the trough axis, and they are therefore not related to the major structure."

"Waste recycling is one of the most important challenges of the XXI century. The recycling of wastes is closely related to and bases on the mineral processing. Many mineral processing techniques and equipment are applied in this field. The principles of the characterisation of wastes and design of technologies is rather similar to the classic mineral processing. Nevertheless, the diversity of the wastes and their complex composition and properties, as well as their environmental impact requires a special approach.Solar elements have sandwich structure of glass substrate and cover, as well as a very thin semiconductor layer. CdTe semi-conductor can be recycled by flotation. Within the RESOLVED (LIFE European Framework) R&D project on the recycling of solar elements the surface properties of pure CdTe semiconductor and pure glass were investigated by the measurements of zeta-potential using Zeta PALS Brookhaven instrument at University of Miskolc. Applied surfactants were: potassium ethyl xanthate; the anionic oxhydryl Aero Promoter 825 or Flotinor SM 35; the cationic Armoflote 43 or Armoflote 64, as well as Hostaflot LET (dithiophosphoric acid diethyl ester) and Hostaflot M91 (mercaptobenothiazole). The tested electrolyte was sodium-silicate. Zeta-measurements were carried out in full pH-range. Interfacial interactions were detected and interpreted. The basic results were verified by the flotation kinetic tests.Finally, the flotation technological experiments were carried out at a semi-technical scale using the real obsolete solar elements. The particle size at the liberation degree of 98% was as fine as below 5 µm. A special flotation cell providing the generation and distribution of very fine air bubbles was built. The pre-concentrate for the manufacturing of the test solar module was performed and transported to the BAM Institute (Berlin), the principal co-ordinator of the Project, and then further to the First Solar (USA) where a new panel was manufactured using recycled semi-conductor."

Al - 5.5 wt% Mg - 0.3 wt% Cu alloy strip was successfully fabricated by horizontal-type twinroll casting (TRC). For producing sound strips with no surface defect, the casting was conducted at various roll rotation speed, and the sound strip could be obtained at relatively low casting speed (3 rpm). The cast strip was homogenized at 450 °C for 10 hours, and then cold rolled with a reduction rate of 78%, followed by a final annealing at 450 °C for 1 hour. The annealed sheets showed good mechanical properties with approximately 330 MPa in tensile strength and 27 % in elongation, but exhibited strong anisotropy depending on the tensile directions. For the homogenized sheets, warm rolling was also conducted at 200, 300, and 400 °C. The tensile test results of the warm-rolled sheets showed that the rolling at medium temperature (300 °C) was proper to fabricate the sheets with relatively good mechanical properties and low anisotropy.

"Some of the tools developed for the processing of nickel laterite ore by resin-in-pulp (RIP) may be applicable to the remediation of metalliferous mine drainage (MMD). In both cases, recovery of metal value and production of a stable waste stream appropriate for long term storage is desired. MMD typically has the additional challenge of management of toxic low-value metals. Seen in this light, innovations in RIP reactor configuration, selective elution strategies and novel synthetic ion exchange resins become useful tools for taking on the MMD challenge in a way that maximizes both environmental and economic benefit. INTRODUCTIONAcid mine drainage (AMD) is a common problem in any country with significant past mining activity. When sulphide containing minerals, tailings or slag are exposed to water, oxygen and sulphur oxidizing bacteria, AMD will result. Abundant and reactive iron sulphide minerals leach first, providing acidity and the ferrous/ferric couple that can enhance the oxidation kinetics of other minerals. If this runoff contacts encounters acid consuming carbonates or silicates, the acidity may be neutralized, but certain heavy metals remain in solution and can continue to be an environmental hazard (Gray, 1997). For this reason, the remainder of this paper will refer to the broader term metalliferous mine drainage (MMD) rather than acid mine drainage. In either case, such drainage, containing high heavy metal concentrations and often significant acidity, is toxic to aquatic life and can lead to significant damage to ecosystems and to public watercourses. MMD is a problem most commonly associated with now defunct sulphide mineral mines, but similarly toxic streams can result from many types of waste, such as poorly stabilized leach tailings, slag heaps, and coal flotation tailings (Johnson and Hallberg, 2005; Lee et al., 2002; Sainz et al., 2002; Schüring et al., 1997). In any case, the management and remediation of MMD is an important ongoing problem for the resource industry, particularly for the many mines in Canada closed before the advent of more stringent environmental standards. MMD remediation represents a significant long term expense for the resource industry. Multi-disciplinary efforts to understand and mitigate this problem range from creation of artificial wetlands (Poulin and Lawrence, 1996; Sheoran and Sheoran, 2006) to sophisticated biochemical reactors and precipitation processes (Hatami, 2010). Certain remediation technologies such as ion exchange offer methods to make a saleable product by recovering valuable dissolved metals. This paper will show how these technologies can help defray the cost of remediation, and offer potential to turn a dangerous waste stream into a useful product."

During this, the Centennial year of the discovery of the Hall-Heroult process, it seems appropriate to review some of the developments which have taken place in Canada and to explain why it has become an important world centre for the production of primary aluminum. For many years after it was recognized that the element aluminum existed, scientists were frustrated in their efforts to isolate it. In the early 1800s H. C. Oersted and Frederick Woehler prepared small quantities sufficient to measure some of the physical properties. A quasi-commercial process involving reduction with metallic sodium was developed by the French scientist H. St. Claire Deville in 1855 but the cost was very high ($30. 00 per kg). It was not until 1886 that Charles Martin Hall in the United States and P.L.T. Heroult in France, more or less simultaneously but completely independently, discovered the process which is essentially that in use today. Some of the early pioneers in the industry quickly recognized the potential of the hydro-electric resources in Canada as economic energy suppliers for aluminum production. The first commercial production in Canada was in Shawinigan, Quebec in 1901, only 15 years after the process was discovered. Subsequently operating plants were established at nine different locations in Canada (Quebec and British Columbia) (Table 1). Operations continue today in all locations except one (La Tuque). The table shows present plant capacity which for the older plants was reached in an evolutionary manner including replacement of obsolete capacity or upgrading and modernization of existing designs.

By understanding those information relationships and the cost of wrong decisions, analysts can estimate the value of information flow. Developers can then ensure that systems deliver key information in an accurate and timely way. In this paper, general maintenance decision-making is discussed, with examples of how model-based analysis can improve the information delivered to decision makers.

It is generally recognized that the interpretation of bedrock geochemical data in volcanic terrains can be improved by adjusting for rock-type. Various chemical attributes of volcanic rocks have been put forward in the literature as rapid indicators of rock-type, but there is some question as to which of these is the most reliable . Only one such attribute, total iron, seems to have seen systematic use in geochemical mapping in the Flin Flon region. Discriminant analysis of 500 basalts, andesites, dacites and rhyolites suggests that SiO2 is the most important rock-discriminating variable and that MgO, CaO, TiD2, AI2O3 and FeOtot, are successively poorer discriminators. Lithological normalization in the subalkaline volcanic environment should therefore be made over ranges of this variable. Trace-metal data from drill core through the sulphide orebody at Hanson Lake, Saskatchewan are used to demonstrate various approaches to lithological correction, including silica normalization, factor analysis and trend analysis. All of these extract economically important information from the core that is not apparent in the raw data logs. However, silica normalization does not seem to be subject to as many serious limitations as factor and trend analysis in this case, and therefore seems to provide the most reliable basis for the interpretation of subsurface exploration geochemical data.

THE PROPERTY of Aunor Gold Mines, Limited, consists of eleven claims, located in Deloro township, approximately three miles southeast of the town of Timmins. Production began in 1940 and currently the mine is operating at a rate of 485 tons per day. GEOLOGY AND MINE DEVELOPMENT The ore zone at Aunor occurs in altered lavas bounded on either side by soft talc-chlorite schist, locally known as &apos;soapstone&apos;. The zone has a strike of N.80°E, dips 60° North, and varies in width from 0 to 250 feet. Within this zone the main orebody has a westerly plunge, away from the No. 1 shaft area (Figure 1). The mine is developed by a vertical three-compartment shaft from surface to the 3,082-foot horizon. Working levels are spaced at 125- foot intervals from the 625-foot to the 1,625-foot horizon, from which to tl1e 2,125-foot level the interval is 250 feet.

"The Mountain Lake deposit is a tabular sandstone-type uranium deposit, hosted by the basal unit of Middle Proterozoic Dismal Lakes Group. Uranium occurs mainly as sooty pitchblende disseminated in stratiform lenses within gently dipping quartzose sandstone. It is associated with copper sulphides, pyrite, hematite, and traces of nickel and cobalt arsenides and of silver.Exploration HistoryUranium showings on the PEC claim group were discovered during 1969 by an airborne radiometric survey carried out over the Dismal Lakes-Great Bear Lake area by Aquitaine of Canada Limited (Bizard and Salat, 1969). Some drilling was done in the vicinity of the showings in 1975 by the company under a joint venture with Eldorado Nuclear Limited but the results were not encouraging (Hassard and Woollett, 1975). During 1972, Trigg, Woollett and Associates Limited conducting surveys for Imperial Oil Limited, discovered numerous high-grade radioactive boulders scattered over a distance of several kilometres north and west of the showings, and the area north of the PEC claims was staked as the YUK claims (Ahuja, 1974). A systematic study of the boulder distribution and Pleistocene geology suggested a source additional to the showings. More intensive exploration followed, and in 1976 drilling just north of the PEC claim group boundary intersected the main deposit at a depth of 75 m to 150 m, beneath overburden up to 60 m thick. Part of the deposit extends into the PEC claim group which is under exploration by the Aquitaine-Cominco Joint Venture.The following brief description is based on the presentations in 1978 by F.
