Simulated TMCP using a Gleeble was undertaken to evaluate the effect of the austenite to ferrite cooling rate, coiling temperatures of either 400°C or 500°C and the magnitude of plastic deformation at the coiling temperature on the hardness of a Grade 483 (X70) steel. For comparable apparent cooling rates and deformation conditions, the hardness of the samples were independent of coiling temperature The application of a minimum compressive deformation > 8% was required to increase hardness at both simulated coiling temperatures of 400°C and 500°C. An increase in hardness was also observed with increased cooling times between 800°C and 500°C (i.e., slower cooling rates).

"At present, theoretical concepts of gravitational separation processes are mainly limited by the study of the interaction between a flow and a solitary particle. Then the main conclusions of this analysis are applied to a mass process. However, this analysis is absolutely insufficient, because some elementary phenomena such as the ingress of coarse particles into the fine product output and vice versa cannot be interpreted from its standpoint. It is also impossible to predict the results of the classification of a material with a specific granulometric composition on a specific apparatus on its basis.In the present paper, an extended model of the process is suggested. The model is based on the behavior of all the particles of a specific narrow size class, and not on that of an individual particle. Similarity criteria of the process, which were empirically derived previously, are obtained from the analysis of this model.INTRODUCTIONIn case of gravitational separation, a part of solid phase moves, as a rule, vertically upwards with the flow, while another part settles against the flow. This flow is extremely complicated and chaotic due to various random factors. Among these factors are mass interactions of particles with each other and with the apparatus walls, non-uniform character of concentration and velocity fields, turbulent vortices and local fluctuations, real particles shape difference from spherical one, etc.Particles rotation results in a transverse force (Magnus' effect). At the motion of a non-rotating particle in a non-uniform velocity field, a transverse force also arises (Saffman's effect).A great number of publications have been devoted to the account for all these factors in two-phase flows in recent decades. Very complicated models have been developed, but the problem has not been completely solved as yet [1, 3].At the same time, simplified models of the behavior of a solitary particle in a flow are being developed. Despite their schematic nature, such models often prove to be useful for establishing general laws of the process and its similarity criteria [1]."

"Collector and frother are commonly used to induce the floatability of valuable minerals in flotation plants. These reagents are usually distributed down a flotation bank or sometimes added in a single location at the top of the bank. A review of the literature and some experimental results obtained from laboratory and full scale trials indicate that the way flotation reagents are distributed down a flotation bank may influence the flotation response of coarse particles. The paper summarizes these observations which show that the distribution of reagents is a potential tuning variable for process optimization.IntroductionFlotation is in many cases the only way to concentrate sulphide and some oxide minerals. Flotation is a concentration process that uses particle surface composition to induce the selectivity by mean of hydrophobic reagents. The influence of particle size on flotation was firstly analyzed in the 50's1·2 and intensively investigated in the 70's, early 80's and 90's3-18. Most of the observed results show the existence of an optimum flotation size range9 whose recovery is not significantly influenced by a reduction of collector dosage""18. This result brought the idea of using a small portion of the total collector dosage at the top of a rougher bank and to distribute the remaining through the end of the bank to ensure sufficient collection of the coarse particles that need more hydrophobic coverage to attach to air bubbles and be lifted to the surface.This paper discusses the idea of using the distribution of reagents down a flotation bank to tune the operation of the process. Unlike the literature on the effect of reagents (collectors, frother...) dosage that is dense, little attention has been put on the distribution of reagents in a flotation bank. Although research on this subject has not been pushed very far, some operators have recognized the potential of a strategic addition of reagents down a flotation bank19. Except for a few exceptions, the proportions of the reagents to be distributed down a flotation bank are decided according to operator's experience instead of process analysis in relationships with particle size. This paper recalls observations made by different researchers that lead to the idea of using the distribution of reagents as a tuning variable for the flotation process. The paper does not present a detailed analysis or optimization scheme for tuning the distribution of reagents, but analyzes some plant and laboratory results with a view toward the development of a testing methodology and ultimately a validation or rejection of the idea."

Princess colliery is operated by Old Sydney Collieries, Limited, a direct descendant of the General Mining Association of London, England, which, in the first quarter of the nineteenth century, pioneered in coal mining in Nova Scotia. The coal worked is a 5 ft. 6 in. seam known generally through the Sydney coalfield as the Harbour seam but referred to locally as the Sydney Main. Entry is made by shafts, 680 feet deep, sunk in 1871 on a headland forming the northern entrance to Sydney harbour. From them extend the main roadways of the colliery, a distance of 700 feet to the shore line and a further distance of 14,700 feet in submarine areas to a total length of 15,400 feet. It was the first colliery in Nova Scotia designed to work submarine areas. Lateral development extends across a frontage of 16,000 feet and the submarine area from which the coal has been extracted is slightly over 6 square miles. There yet remains sufficient territory ahead of the workings to assure a future life to this colliery estimated at over 80 years at the current rate of production. In this area the seam dips at 6 to 7 per cent and face workings have reached a depth of 1,690 feet below the sea level. Until 1923 extraction of the coal was by room-and-pillar, followed by the drawing of the pillars. At that date the superincumbent strata had reached a thickness of 1,400 feet, resulting in heavy weighting on the roof and severe side pressure on the coal ribs. In combination with a soft, heaving pavement this created a set of conditions involving great difficulties and expense in keeping open places driven in the solid sufficiently long to permit recovery of the coal in the pillars by methods and equipment then available. The operator was forced to resort to extraction by longwall as the only economical method of winning the coal.

"This paper aims to contribute to the knowledge of the mechanical properties of the shales and greywackes which constitute the flysch-type deposits of the Baixo Alentejo Flysch Group, in the south of Portugal. These formations are flysch-type deposits constituted by sequences of usually thick greywacke beds alternating with thin shale beds, which include sometimes intercalations of conglomerate beds. All the sedimentation of these flysch formations was controlled by tectonics. At the same time, should have occurred along with the first Hercynian deformation phase, a low-grade metamorphic event (chlorite zone), that affected these flysch deposits. This study highlights the influence of anisotropy and heterogeneity of these flysch rocks on their physical and mechanical characteristics. The anisotropy verified in some physical properties and on mechanical properties, due to the foliation makes difficult the sample preparation for the laboratory tests. Besides, it induces a scattering of the properties values measured, as for example, the strength and the deformability. The heterogeneity is related to the main features of these geological formations, which are constituted mostly by thinly stratified greywackes and shale beds, which sometimes may affect the results of the laboratory tests making them less representative. The study is made by using both shales and greywackes that constitute these flysch-type deposits in order to evaluate their geotechnical properties, mainly of the shales. Samples of these two rock materials, are tested accordingly a laboratory testing programme, which includes which included mineralogical analysis (X-ray diffraction), physical tests (bulk density, porosity, and void index) and mechanical tests (uniaxial compression, and deformability tests). INTRODUCTIONOne of the factors that most influence the geomechanical behavior of rocks, as well as rock masses is the anisotropy. The word anisotropy comes from two Greek words ""anisos"" (meaning uneven) and ""tropos"" (meaning direction). A body or material is considered to be anisotropic, where the same property has different values depending in which direction it is measured, therefore, an anisotropic material is one whose magnitude of the properties depends on the direction in which these are studied or measured. Otherwise, it is about an isotropic material. However, the fully isotropic materials are quite rare in nature."

A semi-automatic device has been constructed that can be used to check the solution strength of cyanide solutions. It consists of a wheel on which a gold-foil-bearing glass slide is mounted. The wheel moves the gold foil through the solution under test and intercepts a light beam. As the gold foil is attacked by the cyanide solution its light absorption diminishes. The successive in-crease in transmitted light intensity is recorded and gives a measure of the gold dissolution rate. Curves have been obtained to show the effect of cyanide concentration and oxygen content on dissolution rates. The potential of a bacterial strain isolated from water samples collected from a chromite mine in Odisha, India has been assessed for the bioremediation of hexavalent chromium, a toxic environmental pollutant. The isolate was identified as Sphingopyxis sp., a Gram negative bacterium, adopting molecular biological protocols and biochemical characterization techniques. Detailed investigations on the bioremoval of Cr(VI) were carried out using Sphingopyxis sp. cells and the various parameters affecting the biosorption process were evaluated. About 55 % biosorption of Cr(VI) was obtained using Sphingopyxis sp. bacterial cells and the residual chromium in solution was found to be bio-reduced to the trivalent form, namely Cr(III). Thus, complete bioremediation of Cr(VI) could be achieved using the mine isolate, with contributions from both biosorption and bioreduction mechanisms. The Cr(VI) biosorption isotherm obtained for the isolate was found to follow a typical Langmuirian behavior and the free energy value of biosorption was determined to be ~-25 kJ/mol, indicative of involvement of chemical binding forces in the bioremediation process. The chromium biosorption kinetics by the isolate followed a pseudo second order reaction. The FTIR spectral studies revealed that carboxyl, hydroxyl, amino and phosphate groups were involved in the biosorption process. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic studies on the bacterial cells interacted with Cr(VI) confirmed the presence of both Cr(VI) and Cr(III) on the cell surface. The electrokinetic studies revealed that the surface potential of the bacterial cells were less electronegative subsequent to interaction with Cr(VI), compared to the cells alone, which further testified to the binding of positively charged Cr(III) ions, formed by bioreduction of Cr(VI), to the bacterial cell surface. A marginal shift in the iso-electric point obtained for the bacterial cells interacted with Cr(VI), corroborated the involvement of chemical binding forces in the bioremediation process.

Mg micropowders generated by gas atomisation of a magnesium melt with argon were mixed and ball milled with ceramic nanoparticles prepared by laser-induced gas phase reaction. The materials were then hot extruded. Specimens were deformed in tensile as well as compression tests at temperatures between 20 and 300 °C at a constant initial strain rate. The flow stress is significantly influenced by the test temperature. The yield stress decreases with temperature. This decrease and the flat character of the stressstrain curves at elevated temperatures indicate possible contributions of softening processes. The materials studied exhibit high-damping characteristics. The results are analysed and possible mechanisms are discussed.

The Pembina Cardium pool is a low permeability, stratified, solution-gas drive reservoir. Water-flooding has proven to be an effective means of pressure maintenance for all areas of the pool in which an economic rate of water injection can be maintained. The majority of water injection wells in the pool are converted oil well~ with capacities greater than 100 millidarcy-feet. If the average injection rate per unit of capacity can be in-creased the lower capacity areas of the pool can be economically flooded. Theory, laboratory work, and two . early miscible-flooding projects with-in the pool suggested that average water injection rates for converted wells could be increased two to three-fold by the initial injection of natural gas liquids and natural gas. "The flotation of monazite is depressed when using hydroxamic acid as a collector in the presence of calcium ions which may exist due to the dissolution of minerals such as calcite. Minor dosages of sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) were found to effectively depress calcite, whereas the flotation of monazite was not impaired in single mineral flotation tests. However, in a mixed mineral flotation system, monazite flotation was depressed significantly. The mechanism of hydroxamate adsorption on monazite and calcite, the depression mechanism of calcite on monazite, as well as the depression mechanism of SHMP on calcite and monazite were studied using micro-flotation, electro-kinetic, and adsorption tests. Findings indicate that the adsorption of hydroxamate on monazite was due to chemisorption while adsorption on calcite was a result of physical interaction. SHMP significantly increased the negative charges of calcite surfaces which depressed the adsorption of the hydroxamate anions on the calcite surfaces due to an elevated electrostatic repulsion force. When calcium-rich minerals such as calcite are mixed with monazite, the calcium ions dissolved from the mineral surfaces specifically adsorb onto the phosphate oxygen sites on the monazite mineral surfaces thereby causing depressing effects. The addition of SHMP to suppress collector adsorption on the calcite surfaces interacts with the calcium species that were specifically adsorbed onto the monazite surface, which prevents hydroxamic acid adsorption onto the rare earth oxygen sites due steric hindrance and results in the flotation depression of monazite. INTRODUCTIONAs one of the commercial rare earth ores, monazite has been widely exploited to produce additives for catalysts, batteries, alloys, etc. Because of the complexity and the fine nature of some monazite ores, methods such as gravity, magnetic, and electrostatic separation to treat beach sand monazite fail to produce satisfactory concentrates, suggesting the use of floatation is warranted (Cheng, Holtham, & Tran, 1993). The primary associated minerals of monazite ores include ilmenite, quartz, zircon, rutile, sillimanite (Dixit & Biswas, 1969; Pavez a& Peres, 1994, 1993). Using sodium oleate as collector for monazite has been reported in many studies (Cheng et al., 1993; Dixit & Biswas, 1969; Pavez & Peres, 1994, 1993). Several investigations have reported maximum floatability of monazite occurring at pH values between 8 and 9 (Cheng et al., 1993; Dixit & Biswas, 1969). A study conducted by Pavez and Peres (1994) compared the use of hydroxamate and sodium oleate for the treatment of a monazite ore and found that hydroxamate significantly improved the grade of rougher concentrate."

"While thiocyanate (SCN-) is used in a number of industrial processes (production of polyacrylonitrile filaments, synthesis of agricultural chemicals and certain metallurgical solvent extraction and flotation circuits) it is recognized more as an undesirable by-product associated with ' the metallurgical industry. Thiocyanate is present at low concentrations in some waste streams from the iron and steel industry. Of particular significance is the formation of thiocyanate during cyanidation of gold and silver ores, concentrates, tailing s and residues. The thiocyanate levels present in the resulting effluents may range from a few mg/I to several thousand mg/I.At present, thiocyanate does not appear to be as hazardous in the environment as cyanide (CN-) at the same concentration although its interaction with other species and resulting decomposition of products may be unacceptable. Of course the presence of thiocyanate in the leaching circuit and ultimately in the effluent streams may add considerably to the oxidative requirments of any non-selective treatment process for cyanidation wastes.With respect to the thiocyanate as it relates to the cyanidation process, two aspects are evident. Thiocyanate forms and persists in the cyanidation circuit resulting in a ""fouling"" condition with subsequent loss of leaching activity. In order to reduce or control this problem, it is common practice for some mills to discharge daily as much as 20% of the barren leach liquor. Besides contributing to fouling of the leach liquor the formation of thiocyanate represents an irreversible loss of reagent cyanide. It is noteworthy that in some present or proposed mill practice reagent cyanide loss through thiocyanate formation may reach 50%(1). The purpose of this paper is to discus s the application of controlled electrooxidation of thiocyanate with the view of suggesting a process for regenerating cyanide from waste thiocyanate(2). The paper describes the important theoretical aspects and presents experimental data obtained for thiocyanate electrooxidation using both small and large scale electrochemical reactors. Some economic conclusions are presented."

This paper presents the results of an investigation of a full-scale rod mill. Appropriate numerical techniques are developed for the experimental determination of the parameters of a dynamic mathematical model from steady state data. The results confirm that this full-scale rod mill behaves similarly to laboratory-scale ball mills for which results have previously been obtained. It is noted, however, that although the model presented is adequate for predicting over-all particle size distributions, the size distributions of individual components of a multicomponent ore cannot be predicted.

"Cigar Lake Mining Corporation is presently operating an underground test mine in northern Saskatchewan, with a view to developing a high grade uranium deposit. The mining test is intended to demonstrate that the innovative mining methods designed are safe and economical. Two vertical mining methods are considered for the test:• box hole boring from the lower level;• blind boring from the upper level.In both cases, it is anticipated to freeze the ground before excavation to ensure hole stability and limit the inflow of water. Special care will be taken to minimize radiation exposure of personnel.Remote controlled equipment will be used where applicable.The access to the orebody was an important component of the test. After shaft sinking to a depth of 500 m, development work commenced at the 420 level in fractured sandstone which was grouted to restrict the inflow of formation water. The drifting continued in a section of poorly consolidated sand, clay and sandstone; this area was frozen to allow stabilization prior to excavation. At the 480 level relatively little water was encountered in the altered basement gneiss and grouting was not necessary; however, extensive ground support was required in the soft ground areas."

The utilization of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and model based 3-D control of work machines have increased a lot in new road construction in Finland as well as in other Nordic Countries. Up today, much less attention has been paid into the development of maintenance and rehabilitation processes. As a part of a large research and development program RYM PRE Infra FIN BIM in Finland, a focused research project of the BIM with experiments in total five (5) pilot projects has been performed. A main idea of the new BIM based process has been to utilize mobile laser scanning method for initial data acquirement, the use of novel 3-D analyze and modelling methods for point cloud processing, the use of new type optimization method for the planning of geometric and structural improvements needed for the existing uneven road surfaces, and further, through the creation of 3-D machine control models apply the newest 3- D machine control systems for continuous 3-D control of practical construction work using milling machine and asphalt paver. Finally, an evaluation is made between the new process model and the traditional way of working.

"Mass balances in secondary grinding are subject to critical constraints mainly because of the unknown load distribution from the SAG mills, the uncertainties in the hydrocyclone split estimations and the lack of flowmeters in the key streams. In this paper, a methodology to support mass balances based on the use of radioactive tracer is presented. This approach was successfully implemented in two secondary grinding circuits of Minera Los Pelambres, which operate with ball mills of 21’ x 33.5’. The method allowed the load distribution of the SAG product (secondary grinding feed) to be determined. This load distribution was used as an input in the mass balance data reconciliation.The effective residence times of solid tracers were obtained in the secondary grinding equipment, where irradiated solid was used as a tracer. The residence times were obtained from the parametric deconvolution between the input and output tracer signals. The model fitting was performed to reconstruct the normalized output tracer concentration. Effective residence times of solid tracers in the ball mills ranged from 1.9 min to 9.5 min. The use of radioactive tracer measurement in grinding circuits is a powerful tool to consolidate mass balance results as well as to characterize grinding mills.INTRODUCTIONGrinding is the last stage of the comminution circuits. At this stage, the ore particles are reduced in size by a combination of impact and abrasion, either dry or wet (Austin & Concha, 1994). The grinding equipment mostly used in industrial operations correspond to horizontal tumbling mills (Wills & Napier- Munn, 2006). Tumbling mills employ steel balls or rods as grinding media. Ball mills, which are a type of tumbling mills, use steel grinding media with greater surface area per mass unit than SAG (semiautogenous grinding) mills or rod mills (primary grinding). Hence, the ball mills are suitable to obtain the particle size required in the next separation stages (Napier-Munn et al., 1996; Wills & Napier-Munn, 2006)."

Copper mining operations have increased in Iran in the past decades due to price increases and potential for creating jobs in developing countries. Iran consists of many copper mines. The mining operations have a positive economic impact on the region, but may also be the cause of adverse environmental effects. Environmental aspects and the health impact of respirable particulates on the communities and agricultural production in the immediate vicinities have been under scrutiny by the regulatory agencies to ensure sustainable development. The impact of an open-pit mine on the air quality and extent of particulate pollutant dispersion in different directions and times is the focus of this paper. The results of the modeling have been validated through ambient air monitoring. Monitoring stations were installed in different areas within the mine unit operations and around it including background areas where PM10 values were 7 µg/m3. Outside the Complex, particulate concentrations were monitored in 9 different stations and up to 25 km distance. Modeling of point, area, and volume sources was conducted using a 9- year meteorological database. The results showed that particulate quantity decreases rapidly below local standard value of 150 µg/m3 at 2.5 km around the mine and the main pollution is due to the crusher and tailings dump areas. Model outputs were compared to the actual values measured by the air quality monitoring network including villages and crop fields. High overall correlation of about 76% was obtained for most of the locations but lower values were reported for more complex terrain in the region. Remedial actions recommended included road water spraying and better management practices to avoid overloading trucks.

This paper presents the results of a new method that has been tested to recover metallic cobalt lost by diamond beads from rock cuttings. When dimension stones are cut using diamond wire saws, the beads become worn and, before the end of their cycle life, lose a certain amount of material; this material is prevalently made up of sintered metal and diamonds. The material is then washed away, together with rock debris, in a dilute pulp. In effect, this process involves the dispersion of economically valuable, but potentially polluting, materials (such as cobalt) that are used to confer indispensable technological features to the beads. This current research aims to develop a waste-processing pilot plant (High-gradient Magnetic Separator or HGMS) to recover metallic components from the pulp by means of a suitable separation. The research\u2019s purposes are two-fold: a. to remove the polluting components from the rock debris before their disposal and b. to start a recycling process of the valuable metals.

"A complete laboratory process for the treatment of lateritic ores containing a high proportion of iron, as well as chrome and alumina, has been established. The ores treated originate from the tropical zones and result from superficial climatic alteration. According to recent estimates, the known reserves of such ores reach many billions of tons, thus representing huge potential reserves for the elements they contain.The process used is based on the alkaline roasting of pelletized ore in the presence of sodium carbonate. This treatment results in the separate recovery of pellets of upgraded iron ore, pure chrome oxide and hydrated alumina. The research described in the paper aims at determining the best experimental conditions for obtaining the highest extraction of the required oxide from this type of ore."

"From preliminary investigations it has been observed that although evaporation losses may be estimated by comparing single values of certain physical properties of crude oils and their evaporation residues, such techniques possess little accuracy unless both the evaporation process and the variation of the property as a function of the process are completely known. The accuracy of estimation may be increased somewhat through the comparison of property mid-per-cent curves. Further increases in accuracy are possible if bottoms yield •curves rather than mid-percent curves are used. The use of both the mid-percent and bottoms yield curves however involves a prohibitive amount of effort in most cases. Examinations of distillation bottoms from Hempel type distillations carried to end points just short of the cracking point have indicated that these bottoms are not appreciably affected by the evaporation process. It was further observed that bottoms of identical API gravity, obtained from a crude oil and its evaporation residues behave as if they were pure components which were unaffected by evaporation. Based on these observations Hempel distillation bottoms of equal API gravity were obtained for a crude oil and its various evaporation residues from API gravity bottoms yield curves. The volume percent of these bottoms in the crude oil and its residues were used to calculate the evaporation losses suffered by the crude in order to yield the various residues. The results indicate that, although further refinements in technique are required, it is possible to calculate evaporation losses with an accept-able degree of accuracy through the use of this method."

"The Davis tube test has been used for many years as a laboratory method for determining the magnetic iron re-coverable from a magnetite iron orebody. This paper de-scribes a method for determining the recoverable iron from ores of the Labrador Trough type, with the usua1 flow sheet utilizing spirals followed by magnetic separation.The mechanical structure of a metamorphosed iron ore, resulting from recrystallization over long periods of time, is the basis for the laboratory method developed. Similarities between the structures of such recrystallized ores and the structure of annealed and recrystallized steel are noted.A laboratory technique to determine the size of the different grains of gangue and iron ore minerals is de-scribed and the application of this information to arrive at recommended grinding techniques and flow sheets is demonstrated. The use of the method to determine recoverable iron in such ores is compared to actual iron recovery in the pilot-plant and commercial concentrations of the same ore.The use of a specified lower limit of recoverable iron as determined by this method, in order to design open-pit limits, achieves practical results when compared to designing a pit based on an arbitrary lower limit of total soluble iron. The Ungava Iron Ore deposits are used in giving an example of the resulting pit design changes."
