This paper is a study of the application of the science of coal petrology to the use of coal in the iron and steel industry. The petrography of coal is given the most attention, with some mention of coal palynology. The history of the petrographical analysis of coal is first out-lined, with a description of the various coal entities, and then the apparatus and experimental techniques employed for coal evaluation are discussed. The coke stability factor and the relation of coke strength to petrographical data are also covered, and some space is given to the new science of coke microscopy, in particular its use in following the oxidation of coals.

A simple way to determine the IEP of oxide minerals is described. The method is shown to apply for fine powders of Fe203 and ZnO. The IEP lies at pH 6.95 for Fe203 and at pH 9.08 for ZnO.

"IntroductionTHE LYNN LAKE MINE, situated in Manitoba about 150 miles north of Sherridon, has been actively developed by Sherritt Gordon Mines, Limited, during the past seven years, resulting in the establishment of a proven reserve of over 14,000,000 tons of ore containing 1.223 per cent nickel, 0.618 per cent copper, and additional cobalt values. For many years, the Sherritt Gordon Company operated a copper-zinc-gold mine at Sherridon but, as this mine was approaching exhaustion and as it was proposed to use the mining and milling equipment to treat the Lynn Lake ore, a number of unusual problems were faced in transferring plant and operations from the one mine to the other, and particularly in preparing to undertake nickel production.Preliminary investigation showed that the ore could be concentrated by flotation to produce a copper concentrate containing 28 to 30 per cent copper with less than 1 per .cent nickel, and a nickel concentrate containing 11 to 14 per cent nickel, 0.3 to 0.4 per cent cobalt, and less than 2 per cent .copper, with high recovery of the three metals in .the concentrates. It was apparent that, initially, the copper concentrate could be economically smelted and refined in the usual manner. But as the nickel concentrate contained an insignificant amount of precious metals (less than 0.02 oz. per ton) and as .it had a much higher nickel content than comparable concentrates normally produced from sulphide ores, the selection of a treatment process and the location of a plant required careful study."

"Recently, weight saving of automobiles has been strongly required to solve the global environmental problems. Mg alloys are one of the promising candidates as a new material for automobile components. However, the application of the Mg alloys is limited due to their poor corrosion resistance. In the authors’ preliminary study, an Al/Mg/Al clad sheet was fabricated by hot extrusion and subsequent hot forging. The clad sheet exhibited a high corrosion resistance and excellent super plasticity. More specifically, the elongation of the clad sheet was as high as 550%.Importantly, despite that the elongation of Al itself was only 40%without cladding with Mg, the ductility of Al was greatly improved in the form of the clad sheet. In the present study, in order to clarify the mechanism of the superplastic deformation of the Al part in the clad sheet, the microstructure evolution of the Al during the tensile de formation is investigated. The tensile tests were conducted at a temperature of 573 K and at a strain rateof1.0×10-3s-1. The Al exhibited fiber-type texture at the beginning of the tensile deformation, and brass-type texture after the elongation of 50%.INTRODUCTIONMg alloys have been gaining attention because of their excellent properties e.g. light weight, good recyclability and high electromagnetic shielding. However, their practical applications have been limited due to their poor corrosion resistance. In the authors’ previous study, in order to solve this problem, Al coating on Mg alloy by hot extrusion has been proposed, and the Al-coated Mg alloy plate was fabricated(Tokunaga, Matsuura, &Ohno,2012). The plate was hot-rolled and an Al/Mg/Al clad sheet was fabricated. No cracks or debondings were observed at the Al/Mg interface. The sheet exhibited a high corrosion resistance in a comparable level as pure Al. Also, the sheet exhibited a large and uniform elongation of 550%in a tensile test at a temperature of 573 K and at a strain rate of 1.0×10-3s-1without any breakings or debondings of the Al part(Tokunaga, Matsuura, &Ohno,2014).Mg alloys have been known to exhibit a superplastic characteristic when the grain size is small. However, it is known that the pure Al does not generally exhibit the super plasticity. As mentioned above, the Al-coated Mg alloy sheet exhibited 550% of elongation in the authors’ previous study (Tokunagaet al., 2014). However, the pure Al itself showed only 40% of elongation, while the Mg alloy itself exhibited 800% of elongation. Thus, it has been demonstrated that the pure Al was super plastically elongated when it was bonded with the Mg alloy. Generally, deformation mechanism of the super plasticity of the Mg alloy is known as a grain boundary sliding. On the other hand, the mechanism of the superplastic elongation of the pure Al is still unclear. The purpose of the present study is investigation of the deformation behavior of the Al part in the Al/Mg/Al clad sheet during tensile de formation."

Induced Polarization includes many types of dipolar charge distributions set up by the passage of current through consolidated or unconsolidated rocks. Among its causes are concentration polarization and electrokinetic effects in all rocks and the phenomenon of Overvoltage in rocks containing electronic conductors such as metallic sulphides and graphite. In normal rocks the polarization effects may be usually con-fined within relatively narrow limits and any large departures may be at-tributable to the presence of electronic conductors. In practice, Induced Polarization is measured in one of two ways. In the first a steady current of some seconds duration is passed and abruptly interrupted and the slowly decaying transient voltages existing in the ~round are measured after interruption. This is known as the "pulse", "transient", or Direct Cur-rent Induced Polarization (D.C.I.P.).The second method entails a comparison of apparent resistivities using sinusoidal alternating current of two or more frequencies, generally within the range of 1/10 to 10 c.p.s. The costs of labour and electric power are of prime concern to almost all industrial enterprises, and various methods of reducing their impact on production costs are constantly being developed. Automation is one of these schemes, and has received a good deal of attention in the past few years. In the mining industry, compressed air is almost universally used, and its cost is significant. Although the compressor machinery now in use has achieved a high degree of development, the hazard of explosion and fire still exists in these systems. There is thus considerable resistance in some quarters to suggestions that such installations can be safely and successfully automated. The Milliken power plant consists of two 30,000 lb. /hr. fully equipped high-pressure boilers, four H.P. air compressors, a steam turbine for stand-by power, and several L.P. compressors and vacuum pumps. With the installation of automatic and protective equipment in the machinery section, the shift force has been reduced from three to two men.

A7075 aluminum alloys have high strengths but poor corrosion resistance. In order to improve the corrosion resistance, a clad sheet is suggested, that is the A7075 alloy sheet bonded to A1XXX or A6XXX aluminum alloy sheets which are surface layers with good corrosion resistance. Mechanical properties of the clad sheets are determined by the combination of the component layer sheets, and thermomechanical treatment should be precisely designed when the strengthening methods of the core and the surface alloys are quite different. In the present study, three-layered A6022/A7075/A6022 clad sheets were fabricated by roll bonding process. Simplified processes incorporating a twin roll casting were also suggested in order to reduce the processing cost. Several temper methods composed of rolling, annealing, solution treatment, and aging were suggested in order to optimize the mechanical properties of the sheets. The strengths of the clad sheets were compared with the bare A7075 and bare A6022 sheets.

The Molopo Farms Complex is a major, layered ultramafic/mafic, early Proterowic intrusion which is totally covered by sediments of the Karoo and Kalahari Fonnations and situated in southern Botswana and northeastern South Africa. The approximately 3000 m thick, generally fine- to medium-grained ultramafic and mafic cumulates are intrusive into equivalents of Thmsvaal Supergroup sediments and lavas. Multiphase defonnation resulted in tilting and segmentation of the Complex into individual tectonic blocks. Sr isotopes document at least two chemically distinct parental liquids which interacted in a complex manner to form an approximately 1000 m thick rhythmically layered succession which straddles the ultramafic/mafic boundary. Repeated mixing resulted in a complex cryptic layering pattern and numerous sulfide-enriched layers which contain significant PGE+Au concentrations.

"A pilot shaft furnace was operated for one year at Steep Rock to produce special high-grade products from coarse ore, using lignite as fuel. The furnace is 10 ft in diameter and 60 ft high. When operated to heat coarse Steep Rock ore to drive off combined water and give a 64-per-cent-Fe product, the fuel consomption was 900,000 Btu's per long ton of product. The furnace was run in this way from September 1966 to January 1967 to establish the technique of feeding and discharging the furnace and controlling the gas composition and temperature. The furnace is similar in operation to a lignite water gas producer containing a large proportion of catalytic iron oxide. Steam injection is used to control the temperature. The product was tumbled in a rotary trommel to stabilize it. The resulting fines could be fed to the conventional pellet plant at Steep Rock. The furnace was next operated to make 77-per-cent-Fe metallized coarse ore. Several major modifications in de-sign were made and the furnace was successfully operated for short periods to maintain the required conditions to remove 75 per cent of the oxygen from the ore to give a 75-per-cent-reduced product at a grade of 77 per cent iron. The furnace cooling zone was operated under positive pressure, with internai alkaline water sprays to cool the charge. The product was discharged from the open bottom of the furnace without serions reoxidation. The metallized ore was magnetically separated from the discharge. Most of the charred lignite discharged along with the ore is re-cycled. Fuel requirement was 11,000,000 Btu's per long ton of product. This metallized coarse ore is intended for blast furnace feed. A short test run was carried out to establish the conditions for making a highly reduced melting stock for steel furnaces. To achieve 90 per cent reduction and over 90 per cent Fe, the furnace must be slowed down so that the production rate is about one-half the rate when making a 75-per-cent-reduced metallized product. Fuel requirement is 15,000,000 Btu's per long ton of product. The simple shaft furnace developed is similar to the top half of a blast furnace, with some major modifications to allow discharging into the open air. This Low Temperature Blast Furnace program has been technically successful and has resulted in making data available for the design of a commercial plant. Study of the commercial feasibility of large-scale production of metallized coarse ore at Steep Rock is still continuing."

One of the first important questions that should be settled on the opening of a mine or the development of a new deep is the system of haulage to be used, since the layout of the haulage-ways at the pit bottom, or, in case of a slope mine, the arrangement of the surface works, depends largely upon the type selected. Should it later become desirable to install a system of haulage of a type other than that for which the mine roadways were originally laid out, considerable difficulty would likely be encountered in its installation and with the result that it would in all probability be most unsatisfactory and expensive in its operations. It therefore becomes very necessary that full consideration be given the haulage problem at an early date in order that the type best suited to the mine conditions and the required outputs can be intelligently planned for. It is sometimes found, however, that no matter how well the mining engineer explores the seam to be developed, or how accurately he anticipates its eccentricities, there will still remain some unrevealed or unsuspected conditions, or shall we say obstacles, placed by Nature to prevent the too easy winning of her treasures and incidentally to frustrate or modify the application of the plan so painstakingly laid down on paper, and to adversely affect the cost estimate.

Introduction During World War II years, the magnetometer was used by various field parties of the Geological Survey of Canada, specifically in the search for chromite, a strategic war mineral. Throughout the summer of 1944, Professor J. W. Ambrose used the instrument experimentally on eight separate projects (1). Since then, several members of the Survey have come to consider its use to be of valuable assistance in the season's mapping. Dr. C. H. Stockwell, in particular, regards use of the magnetometer as a necessary part of detailed geological survey work. Throughout the field season of 1949, the magnetometer was used by Dr. Stockwell?s party as an aid to mapping in detail, to the scale one thousand feet to the inch, the south-west quarter of Dasserat township, Temiskaming county, Quebec. The principal geophysical project that was undertaken was the location of the Horne Creek fault and the Diabase fault in the area approximately midway between Arntfield and Kearns, on the Quebec side of the Interprovincial border. The location of these faults on either side of this central area was known. The Horne Creek fault is a subsidiary fault to the Cadillac 'break' which extends ?westward from Val d'Or through Cadillac to beyond Larder Lake. It lies to the north of that major fault zone and has a general southwesterly trend.

This paper discusses modern practices in the extrusion of steel. Particular emphasis is given to a description of the Ugine Sejournet method of extrusion, involving the use of glass as a hot work lubricant. Other methods are also mentioned. A brief history of extrusion is presented; present practices in the quality extrusion of tubing and solids are described; and the future potentials of the) process as a tonnage producer are briefly discussed. The advantages of extrusion and the reasons for the use of a glass lubricant, as well as the various methods of using glass, are given. The process, as described, is being used in the manufacture of large commercial quantities of stainless steel tubing and sections. This extrusion process is an essential and unique means of forming such atomic-age materials as titanium, zirconium, molybdenum and other super alloys all of which are materials required in the creation of nuclear installations.

"The Company known as Rouyn Merger Mines, Limited, was formed in 1943 to take over the ownership of claims in Rouyn and Joannes townships formerly held by East Rouyn Mines, Limited, O'Neil Thompson Mines, Limited, and the Hosking-Cockeram Prospecting Syndicate. The NorandaSenneterre branch of the Canadian National railway passes in an approximately east-west direction through almost the entire length of the property. Since 1937, sixty-three diamond drill holes have been drilled from the surface to cross faults on the contact of the Timiskaming sediments with the Abitibi ( Keewatin) volcanics, along which ore has been found to occur. Late in 1945, the sinking of a 3-compartment inclined shaft in the andesite agglomerate beneath the ore zone was commenced. On January 17th, 1947, this shaft had a depth of 944 feet; cross-cuts have been driven north-northwest from the shaft at 150-foot intervals from depths of 200 to 800 feet on the shaft (Fig. 2).GEOLOGYThe western or East Rouyn part of the Rouyn Merger property in which ore is being mined adjoins the area owned by McWatters Gold Mines, Limited, on the east and is underlain by the eastern continuation of the McWatters formations. As at the McWatters, the rocks belong structurally to three areas: (1) the territory north of the Cadillac-Bouzan Lake fault, occupied almost wholly by Abitibi ( Keewatin) volcanics; (2) the area along the south boundary of the property, underlain by Timiskaming conglomerate and greywacke; and (3) the synclinal belt of McWatters volcanics and sediments between areas 1 and 2.1Bouzan fault of Hawley."

"Electrical disintegration (ED) has been well known as a good comminution method to improve liberation of compositional phases because it was reported that electron avalanche could occur preferentially at phase boundary. But the detailed mechanism of the ED has been still not known. This paper describes the results of ED experiments using synthetic binary sample, copper/resin, under the conditions of various distance between electrodes, and discusses the energy distribution in the three kinds of phenomena in the ED process, which are(1) streamer progression in water, (2) electron avalanche in water, and (3) electron avalanche in solid sample, by measuring current and voltage with elapsed time. Then, it has been found that the energy distribution in the phenomenon (1) is quite low and that the distribution in the phenomenon(2) had a considerably large compared with that in the(3), which indicates that the shockwave generated in water could contribute much to the sample breakage.INTRODUCTIONElectrical disintegration (ED) has been well known as a specific comminution technology which enhanced selective breakage at phase boundary and lead to a good liberation among compositional phases1-6),but the detailed mechanism has not been clarified yet. "The two tubes of tunnel Hirschhagen along the highway A44 in Germany, underpass the federal road B7, a railway line and the valley of the river Losse close to the city of Hessisch Lichtenau. The ground in the area consists of Triassic sand- and siltstones (""Buntsandstein"") as well as tertiary clays. Prior to tunneling, the groundwater in the area is planned to be lowered by means of a gallery of deep wells. As a basis for the design of this dewatering gallery, two large pumping tests have been carried out. The results of these tests have been evaluated by means of 3D-Finite Element analyses. By means of the large-scale model, the influence of the anisotropy resulting from jointing and bedding and the influence of fault zones in the area have been taken into account, which lead to a thorough basis for the design of the dewatering gallery.INTRODUCTIONThe 4.2 km long Tunnel Hirschhagen of the highway A 44 crosses below the federal road B7, a railway line and the river Losse close to the city of Hessisch-Lichtenau in central Germany. Both tunnel tubes are located in a subrosion depression in which Triassic sandstone and tertiary clay prevail. It is planned to lower the groundwater table in the area of the meadow of the Losse prior to tunnel heading [1]. Groundwater lowering is planned to be achieved by means of a series of large pumping wells. The bottom of the river Losse will be sealed in order to avoid direct inflow of water from the river into the ground (Fig. 1 and 2)."

There are no physical barriers along the border of our countries. This market is in dose proximity to Canadian production. This market is already joined by crude oil pipe-1,ines to numerous producing areas of Canada. The tariff barriers are reasonable. We are not handicapped by mandatory quota restrictions. There are many of us who desire lo sell Canadian crude oil in this market. Further, and what is really important, there are many of us who desire to buy Canadian crude oil for this market. It is fundamental that for crude oil to be sold in the world market, it must ?be sold at competitive prices. At the same time, it is important that such competitive price must result in a fair price for the crude oil at the we1lhead. The factors of nearness to market, cheap pipe line transportation, and reasonable United States tariffs, all tend to make ?possible a competitive market and a fair wellhead price.

"A diversity of structures and rock types in the Aft on pit has resulted in the occurrence of several different types of wall failure. Delivery of ore to the mill has not been affected and safety has not been compromised thanks to effective remedial 1V0rk and to a system of structural mapping, back analyses of failures, groundwater monitoring, and simple movement monitoring. Remedial measures have included artificial support, dewatering (including vacuum-assisted drainage), flattening of slopes and temporary buttressing. This paper describes six different wall failures at Afton and highlights the features of each. Examples given include rates of movement, extent and direction of movement, and piezometric responses. The practical, low-cost monitoring system was sufficient in one case to allow the prediction of date of failure. IntroductionThe Afton copper deposit is located 13 km west of Karnloops, British Columbia and has been mined for nine years out o f an expected eleven-year life. Open pit mining has reached 700 feet below sur face and is designed to proceed to 970 feet below surface by the time the pit is completed. The excavation is in a structurally and lithologically complex environment. Inevitably, some wall failures have occurred but these have been limited to small, manageable failures which have not compromised production or safety. To handle the failures it has been necessary to understand their nature. Of prim e concern has been the rate s of movement, but displacement vectors and hydrology have been monitored as well. The monitoring system is based on EDM surveys and on wire extensometers and plates set across cracks. Water levels have been read in standpipe piezometers. At Afton the emphasis has been on simple, practical, and inexpensive monitoring and because rock type s and structures play such a major role in any failure, detailed geologic al mapping is carried out."
