Blasting operations can use a bulk emulsion explosive (EE) with a formulation based on used oil as a replacement for refined fuel oil. The most commonly employed used oil for making EE is a mineral based used engine oil that passes an impurity content standard. It is known that not all types of used oil are easily incorporated into EE formulations. Impurities in used oil can disturb EE stability resulting in crystallization and phase separation and consequently led to poor detonation quality. In 2024, a poor blast result occurred at an Indonesian mine due to utilization of used oil that was not within specification. A research project conducted from February to April 2025 found that used transmission oil differs from used engine oil in hydrocarbon composition. Transmission oil contains more additives that affect EE stability due to polarity differences and the disruption of colloidal state stability. Lab tests including stress testing and crystal growth observation aided the development of a stable EE formulation based on used oil and used transmission oil. In mid-April 2025, blast evaluations were conducted using the EE that was formulated using used engine oil and used transmission oil. Measurements of velocity of detonation, fragmentation, and digging time, demonstrated high quality EE was produced. Application of used oil in EE revolutionized the capability of mining operations to improve blast sustainability and cleanliness. Through comprehensive research, robust testing, and effective supply chain management, it is possible to replace some portion of refined fuel oil with used oil without compromising blasting performance. The inclusion of used transmission oil broadens the overall used oil specification and increases the volume of recycled used oil available for blasting. The increased volume of used oil available can reduce the amount of waste generated by mining projects while maintaining operational efficiency.

Recent trends in blasting engineering and its related fields, at the level of professional academia, have tended to exclude detailed discussion and examination of the formative experiences of the engineering student. In particular, the extra-curricular aspects of the undergraduate program in engineering—focused, in this case, on the summer job—will be shown to contain a wealth of heretofore underappreciated knowledge in the field. In Surveying the Damage: Post Traumatic Stress and Pre-Blast Surveys, I intend to outline and examine some of the more unusual experiences afforded me by my work as a preblast surveyor in the summer of 2007. In this capacity, I was required to make a visual note of existing conditions of surrounding residential and commercial structures within 100 m (328 ft) of two separate blasting sites in central-east Ontario. In the interest of both convenience and specificity, I have attempted to organize the paper as a crossdiscipline survey of the field according to the conference’s list of suggested topics. In the paper’s first section, I will discuss the topic of Environmental Improvement and Remediation by using a case study in which not one, but two dead cats were found during the course of a routine pre-blast survey. The second section will undertake a discussion of on-site blaster gossip as an entry point into a wider discussion of Workplace Communications Management. In the paper’s final section, I will detail an early morning encounter with a 300 lb, stark-naked trailer park inhabitant as a cross-sectional analysis of the topics of Drilling in Hostile Environments, Vibration and Seismology (Sizemology?), Ethics in Blasting, Crisis Management, Risk Assessment and Public Relations. It is my hope that this paper will begin to open up a critical space for discussion of the formative experiences of engineering students during the undergraduate university program in terms of their far-reaching effects on later performance within the industry.

The use of explosives bring countless benefits to our everyday lives in areas such as mining, oil and gas exploration, demolition or avalanche control. However, because of the potential destructive power of explosives, strict safety procedures must be an integral part of any explosives operation. The goal of this paper is to provide a solution against the hazards which unfortunately accompany the use of explosives. For this reason, a blast shield is specifically designed and tested for protecting personnel against these unpredictable effects. This document will develop a complete analysis answering the following questions: what are the potential hazards from an air blast; what are their effects; and how can we be protected against them. In order to answer these questions, theoretical, analytical, and numerical calculations are performed. Finally, a full blast shield prototype is tested under blasting conditions proving its effectiveness as a safety device while explosives are used.

An understanding of explosives science and technology, and the competence to harness it is central to maintaining Explosives capability, national security, and in sustaining a competitive industry. A consequence of eroding this competence is the increased likelihood of explosives accidents. These are often catastrophic as demonstrated by accidents in Nigeria, Russia, Toulouse and Enschede. In addition to the serious loss of life there was the very significant damage to houses, domestic and industrial infrastructure and to the environment at a cost of many millions of Euros.

On the 5 September 2014 a road train (tractor-trailer) with two trailers carrying ammonium nitrate was involved in a single vehicle accident on the Mitchell Highway, 30 kilometers (18 miles) south of Charleville in Central Queensland, Australia. The ammonium nitrate was being transported to a mine site for use as a blasting explosive. The truck came to rest in the creek bed adjacent to a road bridge and caught fire. The vehicle burnt for over one hour before the load of ammonium nitrate exploded. Miraculously there were no fatalities; however eight people nearby sustained injuries, some seriously. The road and rail bridge over Angellala Creek were destroyed and vehicles in the nearby vicinity were seriously damaged. The truck carrying the ammonium nitrate was completely destroyed with over 2500 pieces of debris scattered up to one thousand yards (one kilometer) from the blast site.

Mine optimization is a key strategy in the mining industry that focuses on improving the efficiency, productivity, and sustainability of mining operations. To achieve mine optimization, digitalization is essential for modernizing mining operations and attaining optimal performance. Due to the importance of mine digitalization, various software and platforms have been released to support this effort. Furthermore, by integrating these advanced technologies, mines can enhance processes, leading to significant economic and operational benefits. However, integrating data from various sources and collaborating across different platforms remains a significant challenge in the mining industry. Generally, data for mine optimization, such as mapping, smart drilling, FMS (Fleet Management Systems), fragmentation analysis, or vibration analysis, are collected and analyzed separately on different platforms. This separation makes it difficult to aggregate and utilize data comprehensively for overall mining process optimization. During the digitalization process, obstacles arise due to these complexity, variability, and sharing issues of data across different maker, sources, and methods. These challenges highlight the need for seamless integration to achieve optimal mining operations. Thus, this study applied a total solution that can cover the entire Drilling and Blasting (D&B) processes. The blast design was performed using actual terrain mapping data, and drilling and charging were conducted following a guide based on the blast design plan. After blasting, loading and hauling distances and fuel consumption were measured, and fragmentation for each blast was evaluated. All measurement tasks were automated to minimize human error. By collecting all data in one server, it became possible to perform an overall evaluation for each blast, allowing the identification of optimal values. In conclusion, to evaluate the optimization effects for each mining process, one month of integrated data collected on a single server was used. Compared to the period before the Total solution was implemented, there were notable improvements: a 25% enhancement in hole spacing, a 60% improvement in floor flatness, a 23% reduction in average fragment size, and a 19% improvement in fragment uniformity. Regarding cost savings per blasting volume, the improvements were 11.7% in drilling, 9.3% in explosives, 7.6% in loading, and 17.5% in hauling.

Explosive blasting is a widely used method for rock breaking, recognized for its energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Despite its advantages, the efficiency of blast energy can vary significantly between different blasts. This paper introduces a new blast efficiency index to assess the energy efficiency of rock blasting, incorporating factors such as explosive consumption, the energy required for fragment surface generation (based on fragment size distribution), and the strength reduction of rock fragments due to blasting. Several examples presented in this paper demonstrate the calculation of the blast efficiency index using data from the literature. The findings indicate that blasting may be the most efficient method for rock breaking compared with direct mechanical techniques of rock breaking used for excavation. On the other hand, blasting is much less efficient compared with the controlled fracturing, such as the cleavage and fracture toughness testing, which highlights the significant potential to further enhance the efficiency of explosive energy usage for rock fragmentation during blasting. The proposed blast efficiency index can be integrated with advanced blast modeling techniques to optimize blast designs, thereby increasing the effective utilization of explosive energy for rock fragmentation and fragment strength reduction.

Blasting represents the highest risk of any surface coal mining activity that could result in injury and/or property damage off the permit area. In addition, blasting related issues e.g. flyrock, vibrations, air blast, etc., are responsible for a large percentage of citizen complaints. Thorough and consistent regulation of individuals certified to conduct blasting by the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement in Federal Program states and on Indian Lands under Federal jurisdiction is vital, as it serves to: facilitate coal production to meet the nation’s energy needs; protect people and property on and adjacent to Federal mining permits; form a basis for states to grant reciprocity certificates to Federal blasters; and be a positive example to primacy states. OSM issues Federal blaster certificates for blasting on Federal surface coal mine permits. The certification program includes experience, training and testing components similar to many of the states. But where a state program may focus on the specific blasting applications within its boundary, the OSM certificate requires a very diverse test to cover all potential blasting applications and products across the nation. Therefore, the Federal certificate is a good surface mining credential for blasters anywhere in the United States.

Currently, mining operations seek to be competitive in the market. To achieve this, one of the relevant factors is to maintain and improve the productivity of the extractive processes, mainly the loading from the point of opening of the mineral bodies. To do this, many techniques suggest reducing production costs, with the first opening of your free-face up raises. However, there are different ways to carry out these open-face raises up opening processes, where the balance of costs and construction time must be well planned to meet production plans. Operationally, there are different techniques for its construction, the most common being Blind-Hole up Raises and those with drilling with current production equipment that operates mining operations. This study shows a methodology and the results of the implementation of access stack drilling with production drilling rigs for a maximum height of 15 m with electronic detonators in production blasting. Within the methodology used, Qa/Qc processes were considered in cargoes with explosives, instrumentation for monitoring (vibrations), VOD registration, among others. As a result, of a total of 12 raises up blasts, construction time was reduced by 45% and the cost of drilling and blasting (P&V) was reduced by 50%, for up raises with a maximum height of 15 meters. Regarding the efficiency of the heights, this was 97% compared to the planned drilling design.

It would be nearly impossible to create a one-size-fits-all document that would be totally appropriate for every blasting scenario. We have developed a method for predicting and controlling ground vibration from blasting using a rigorous scientific approach. The method is based upon the superposition of seismic waveforms generated by a single-hole free-face shot, recorded at seismographs deployed in an array that includes environmentally sensitlve locations. Waveforms generated by single-hole shots are shown to be reproducible. The waveforms for each of the sites are used to construct synthetic seismograms for delayed shots based upon linear superposition. A computer code systematically constructs the seismograms for the delayed shots, with incremental delays between holes of 1, 2, or 3 milliseconds (ms). A Fourier amplitude specs-rum is calculated for each synthetic seismogram and the spectra are plotted on a map in delay-frequency space, i.e., each row of the map represents the Fourier spectrum for a blast with a particular delay interval. Shock tubes are used to simulate large-scale arena explosions without the use of full-scale arena sites that utilize large quantities of explosives. Instead, small explosive charges can be used to drive shock tubes. When this is done, the geometries of the explosive charges can alter the resulting pressure time curve. A common geometry chosen for the explosive charge is a sphere in order to be congruent with the spherical shockwave that emanates symmetrically in three dimensions from the detonation point. This paper reports on the findings from experiments that study the effects of altering the charge geometries and explosive types while keeping the TNT equivalency constant. Peak pressures and durations were affected by these changes. Directional phenomena are exaggerated by the use of certain charge shapes and detonation points. The speed of the detonation front in the explosive being greater than the speed of the shockwave in air played a critical role in the resulting pressure time waveforms. Waveform manipulation can be used to generate job specific waveforms that ultimately benefit the shock tube operators and their clients.

Explosive demolition involves first, the use of cutting charges to sever a column and second, kicker charges to move it out of alignment. Dynamite is the traditional explosive used in kicker charges as it is inexpensive, easy to initiate, and has a consistent track record of use. Dynamite, however, has health concerns in handling, fragmentation concerns from direct contact on the beam, and availability concerns due to being manufactured at only one location in the continental United States. Recently, water-cased kicker charges have been used in industry, and research has shown that a reduced dynamite mass is possible due to the added confinement, for energetic performance, and the incompressible fluid, which aids in the transfer of explosive energy into beam movement. This research will compare two different explosives, an emulsion (DYNO AP), and binary (HELIX), to dynamite for use in kicker charges, both with and without water-casing. Emulsion is commonly used in rock blasting to create a large push or throw due to its high gas volume production which could translate to kicker charge movement. HELIX is a binary explosive commonly used by the military in breaching charges with water backing. Experimental tests placed kicker charges at the base of a hanging steel column, modifying the ballistic mortar test used to determine explosive power. The study shows that water-casing effectively reduces air overpressure and enhances explosive performance. Among the tested explosives, HELIX showed the most substantial improvements with a 1.8 dB reduction in air overpressure and a 3.2 m/s (10.5 ft/s) increase in column velocity when water-cased. Dynamite and emulsion also benefited from water casing, with decreases in air overpressure (1.1 and 0.7 dB respectively) and increases in column velocity (1.1 and 0.7 m/s (3.6 and 2.3 ft/s) respectively). This research also shows that emulsion is a viable replacement for dynamite in demolition projects, performing similarly in both traditional use and water-cased charges.

Through the preliminary experimental analysis, wet chemistry and the Bulk Explosive Analyser were found as methods most suitable for the evaluation of bulk explosives. In sublevel caving, blasted material flows gravitationally into the drawpoint from above in a periodical manner. This type of flow behavior entails muck pile conditions that are variable along the course of extraction. The effect of this variability on the LHD (Load-Haul-Dump) operation in terms of loading efficiency and ability to undermine the blasted ring is not fully understood as of today. This paper presents results from a field test in LKABs Malmberget mine in Sweden, where the influence of fragmentation on the loading operation has been studied in detail. Drawpoint filming was conducted for extraction of two rings equivalent of roughly 10000 metric tons (~9842 long tons) of material each. The analysis includes fragmentation measurements, muck pile classification, and general estimations in terms of loadability. Further, an evaluation of LHD machines from two different manufacturers was conducted to identify and highlight differences. The results show that fragmentation, muck pile compactness, and flow characteristics are all interdependent. Flow disturbances and the subsequent loading of compacted fine material in the back of the ring have been identified as the main reason for occurring problems and prolonged digging times. However, the ability to sufficiently undermine the blasted ring has been identified to primarily depend on digging depth which is only observed to be high during flow disturbances. An absence of flow disturbances seem to promote high loading efficiency but simultaneously limit the maximum digging depth. A mid-range particle size distribution with a low amount of fines has proven beneficial for overall loading efficiency. The various LHDs employed showed significant variations in terms of ability to handle difficult loading situations (e.g. compactness, boulders, etc.).

It is therefore important that the consumer be prepared to ask his suppher specific questions. To do so, he needs to have a basic understanding of what an emulsion is and how emulsion properties can affect safety, performance, and environmental impact. The criteria to be covered include: energy, velocity, sensitivity, minimum priming, shelf life, pumpability, effect of AN quality, over-the-road handling, and formulation. The consumer will learn how each of these properties can directly affect him. The information will enable him to set minimum standards in product selection, blending, and application.

ANFO generates more gas thereby resulting in greater heave/movement. 2. ANFO is a more consistent product because there are less components/ingredients. 3. The origin of the written blasting log or shot report can likely be traced back to the earliest annals of blasting and record keeping. These records were, for the most part, a way of checking inventory, production progress, or billing, and not necessarily designed with the intention of being used as a legal document in a court of law. As our litigious society has evolved to include far reaching regulatory requirements, however, the blasting log has developed to support and aid in the defense of the common blaster from blasting lawsuits by providing a comprehensive written report of his or her actions.

The 11th International Symposium on Rock Fragmentation by Blasting (FRAGBLAST 11) was held in Sydney, Australia, between 24-26 August, 2015. The 93 papers, including six keynote presentations, covered exciting and practical topics in 20 sessions within 12 themes. Just fewer than 300 delegates from 27 countries attended. Four workshops were conducted on the weekend prior to the symposium, with three field visits after the symposium to Sydney region quarries, the Hunter Valley coal mining region, and the Kalgoorlie gold mining region. Delegates had the opportunity to visit the exhibition areas that showcased the latest products, software, hardware and systems in blasting technology. The keynote addresses were held in plenary sessions and set the tone for the parallel sessions that followed. They spanned the dynamics of the mining industry, the detonics of explosives, the interaction of stress waves and fracture mechanics in fragmentation, wall control blasting, and the importance of education and engineering for full process optimisation.
