The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed an intrinsically safe carbon monoxide (CO) monitoring system for mines by coupling a fiber-optic data telemetry (FODT) system with a prototype electro-chemical CO monitor. The CO monitoring system can be used in a coal mine as one component of an early fire warning system. This system may be used in belt haulage entries when the entries are used for supplying ventilation air to working places. The FODT accepts a 0.1-to 1.1-V analog signal from the monitor and converts it to pulses (0 to 5 V) at frequencies from 1.1 to 11 kHz that drive a light-emitting diode (LED). An electrically nonconducting fiber-optic cable carries the LED signal to a remote receiver. The receiver analyzes the incoming light signal and displays the measured CO concentration in parts per million. This report discusses the performance of the FODT system and characteristics of the CO monitor such as response times, linearity, and temperature and pressure effects.

A project to demonstrate the feasibility of retorting oil shale by the Paraho vertical retort process was carried out at Anvil Points, Colorado during 1974 to 1976. As a part of the demonstration project, laboratory and field tests were performed to determine the physical and chemical properties of the retorted shale for use in the development of eventual full-scale disposal plans. The material which exits from the Paraho retort is classified as a non-plastic silty gravel by the Unified Soil Classification System. The particles have an apparent specific gravity averaging near 2.60 and a mass specific gravity averaging near 2.00. The material can be compacted by normal laboratory and field construction methods to about 90 to 100 pounds per cubic foot dry density depending upon the degree of compactive effort applied. The addition of moisture does not improve compactibility appreciably. When high compactive effort is applied the retorted shale is classed as impervious to water flow. The compacted retorted shale exhibits shear strengths in the same order as those observed for silty gravel soils. If the compacted material is cured (long tune simulation testing) prior to strength testing considerable strength gain can be obtained from cementing action. The amount of cementing developed is dependent upon heat treatment and other operating modes of the retort.

This publication summarizes, for potential contractors and all other interested parties, the research and development of in-house and contract projects programmed by the Bureau of Mines for fiscal year 1983 (October 1, 1982-September 30, 1983) under its Health and Safety Technology program. The objective of these projects is to provide an ordered and sequenced series of advance toward the Bureau's overall goal of providing the systems technology required to create a more healthful and safer working environment for the Nation's mining and minerals processing workers.

In 1981 the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey conducted a mineral survey of the Pyramid RARE II area (No. 5023) covering 23,500 acres (9,500 ha) of E1 Dorado National Forest and 7,900 acres (3,200 ha) of the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (fig. 1). The Bureau of Mines investigation did not reveal mineral deposits in the area. Samples taken from silicified and limonite-stained metasedimentary rocks and aplite dikes were void of precious or base metals or uranium. Placer samples from stream gravels contained no gold values. Molybdenite occurs in quartz stringers within quartz monzonite near Grass Lake, adjacent to the area; no extension; were found in the area.

A remote heat-activated stench gas/tracer gas mine alarm system was developed to reduce the time between fire detection and personnel notification. The stench gas/ tracer gas system contains ethyl mercaptan for personnel warning and a fluorocarbon for tracer gas detection by instrumentation. A system was also developed which can be interfaced with multiplex mine phones. In-mine tests were conducted and several systems are presently installed in a hard rock mine.

This report describes a statistical analysis of 41,502 respirable quartz dust samples collected from 1974 through 1981 in metal and nonmetal mines and mills. The goal of this Bureau of Mines study was to identify commodities and occupations associated with high quartz dust exposure so that future enforcement and research activity can be focused on the high-exposure areas. For this analysis, the Bureau used its computerized Mine Inspection Data Analysis System (MIDAS), which contains data on nearly 350,000 air samples, including data for 61 contaminants in 45 commodities. The samples analyzed were collected by inspectors of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MS HA). The data were entered into the MIDAS computer and coded according to commodity, occupation, location, and other categorical information. Occupations an. commodities with high quartz dust exposure were identified by grouping the data by code categories. Workers at sandstone, clay and shale, and miscellaneous nonmetallic mineral mills had the highest quartz dust exposures. Within these mills, occupations with high exposures were baggers, general laborers, and persons involved in crushing, grinding, and sizing operations. Dust concentrations in these mills were not necessarily the highest, but because the dust contained a high percentage of quartz, the health risk from dust exposure was the greatest.

The purpose of this Bureau of Mines report is to provide mining industry personnel and regulatory authorities with a subsidence-reference list and annotated bibliography that will aid them in locating subsidence information and in developing their own subsidence information sources. Over 700 references are listed in the Bureau's subsidence information center bibliography; approximately 600 of these references were obtained for assessment. Of these 600 references, 167 were selected to be rated, categorized, and annotated. All literature referenced in this report was published prior to 1984. Table 1 is a cross - referenced index that classifies and rates selected references with respect to specific keywords. References are rated not on quality of content but rather on applicability to given subject areas. Appendix A is an annotated bibliography of the references listed in table 1 and provides further information of each article to aid the user in selecting articles for specific areas of subsidence technology. Appendix B is a copy of the subsidence information center bibliography.

The microstructures of a CF2Br2-inhibited methane flame and its uninhibited analog have been determined using molecular beam-mass spectrometry. The slightly lean flames were stabilized on a cooled porous plug burner at reduced pressure. Composition profiles of stable, intermediate, and radical species and temperature profiles were obtained. Comparisons of the uninhibited and inhibited flame profiles revealed the following inhibition effects; a shift of the primary reaction zone to higher temperatures, a higher maximum flame temperature, an increase in the CH3 concentration, and a reduction in the H2CO, H, 0, and OH concentrations. Kinetic analyses of the data yielded rate coefficients at flame temperatures for the reactions H + CH4 ? CH3 + H2, H + O2 ? OH + O, CO + OH ? CO2 + H, and CH3 + O ? H2CO + H. CF2Br2 is judged to decay by thermal decomposition and abstraction reactions.

"This report describes an exploratory project conducted by the Bureau of Mines on a fluorite deposit near Vado, N. Mex. Results of trenching are given. Together with analyses made upon samples of the ore. The Federal Geological Survey3/ completed a preliminary geologic study and mapped the deposit during the summer of 1944. A Bureau engineer examined the deposit in August 1944. As a result of these investigations, it was concluded that the deposit contained substantial inferred ore reserves. Exploratory work was recommended to obtain information that might possibly lead to production from the property. Assistance was given the Bureau by the Geological Survey.A gasoline-powered air compressor, other equipment, and supplies were delivered to the property from January 20 to 25, 1943. Trenching began under the direction of a Bureau of Mines engineer on January 25, 1947, and ended on March 15, 1945. The results of trenching and sampling form he basis of this report.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. IT is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, R.G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervisions of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director."

Preliminary solvent extraction studies , reported by the Bureau of Mines (5) , have been continued and expanded to improve on the previous estimate of process requirements . The solvent extraction portion of the process was examined at a scale large enough to enable meaningful extrapolation of the results to geometrically similar equipment of plant size . About 82 pct of the beryllium was recovered from approximately 0.5 pct beryllium oxide (Be0) Spor Mountain , Utah , ore by a process involving ( 1 ) sulfuric acid leaching , ( 2 ) counter current decantation (CCD ) washing , (3 ) iron ( III) reduction by sodium hydrosulfide ( NaHS ) , ( 4 ) beryllium solvent extraction by di - 2- ethylhexyl phosphoric acid ( EHPA) , ( 5 ) caustic stripping of beryllium- bearing EHPA, (6 ) hydrolysis of sodium beryllate - caustic strip liquor , and (7 ) calcination of beryllium hydroxide (Be ( OH ) 2 ) formed in step (6 ) . The resulting beryllia assayed 98 to 99 pct Be0 and was suitable for most nonnuclear uses . Best overall results were obtained by using pH 2 , 1.6 grams of BeO per liter of leach liquor as feed and 0.25 N EHPA in kerosine containing 2 wt vol pct (grams per 100 ml of solution ) isodecanol ( IDA ) as solvent . Analysis of the data indicated that a commercial plant would achieve 95- pct overall extraction operating at 45 ° C with 20 hp per 1,000 gal of dispersion in each of seven mixer- settlers , having 290 gal per ton of ore hourly mixer capacity and 90 gal per ton of ore hourly settler capacity . At least 79 lb H2SO4 , 13 lb sodium hydroxide (NaOH ) , 3 lb NaHS , 0.25 lb kerosine , 0.07 lb polyacrylic flocculant , 0.03 lb EHPA , and 0.007 lb IDA would be required in H2SO4 leaching and subsequent processing to recover 1 lb BeO .

To determine in what part and to what extent creep or movement exists in an installed rock-bolt anchor and the effect of the creep or bleedoff on the tension load on a rock bolt, as well as the effect of normal mining activity on the rock-bolt load and anchor, the Bureau of Mines conducted tests in the laboratory and in two mines using four types of expansion-shell anchors, the wedge bolt, and in one mine, explosive-anchored rock bolts. Specially mounted heavy-duty springs, calibrated to obtain load readings from spring movement, were installed on the test bolts to prevent a drastic reduction in tension load caused by slipping or seating of the anchor. A dial gage, reading to 0.0001 inch, measured movement of the anchor shell against the rock and seating of the anchor wedge plug in the shell. While all bolts had electrical resistance strain gages for load reading, only readings from the laboratory tests were used because those from the field tests were erratic. The tests revealed that most load loss resulting from static loading is due to the slippage and seating of the serrations on the anchor shell into the drill-hole wall. Dynamic loading, primarily from sudden shocks from nearby blasting, and possibly from ground movement or mining activity, will cause the anchor wedge plug to seat in the anchor shell.

This report covers the final phase of a project demonstrating the economic efficiency of cross-ridge mountaintop coal mining. A demonstration mine was established at Big Wheel Gap in northeastern Tennessee. Not only was cross-ridge mining feasible for the selected site, but parallel cut methods could not be used due to a deficit in available spoil storage. Cross-ridge mining permitted coal extraction at a cost almost identical with costs simulated by computer projections using mathematical optimization techniques. No unexpected environmental problems were encountered. Volume I is accompanied by Volume II which describes the MATHMINE Mine Simulation System, software used to support the mining demonstration.

To be approved for use in underground coal mines in the United States, explosives and blasting devices must pass certain safety tests prescribed by the Federal Bureau of Mines. These tests are described in Schedule 1-G4/ (explosives) and Schedule 26A5/ (blasting devices). An explosive or blasting device that passes the appropriate tests is placed on the active permissible list. As this list is subject to continuous revision, it has been the practice of the Bureau of Mines to publish periodically the names of explosives and blasting devices that have been added to the active list, as well as those that have been transferred to the inactive list; changes in brand names also are reported. The present circular gives all explosives and blasting devices on the active permissible list as of December 31, 1957, and shows all changes, additions, and transfers in that list between December 31, 1951,6/ and December 31, 1957.

"SUMMARYA chronological list of accidents at metal and nonmetal mines and quarries (excluding coal mines) in the United States in which five or more lives were lost has been compiled. Many accidents were described in more detail because of their unusual features. Tables have been included to indicate the number of major disasters and fatalities by the principal product mined, by State, and by 10-year intervals prior to 1945. The number of men employed to indicate man-hours exposed is unavailable; therefore, a true picture of disaster data by principal product mined, by State, and by 10-year intervals is not possible. However, the data are presented to indicate the causes of major accidents and bring to the attention of those affiliated with metal and nonmetal mines and quarries the hazards involved and lessons that can be practiced to keep such accidents at a minimum.INTRODUCTIONThe Bureau of Mines was requested to compile a chronological list of accidents at metal and nonmetal mines and quarries (excluding coal mines) in the United States in which five or more lives were lost. Data have been assembled on accidents from all causes in these mines and quarries from the earliest available information (describ¬ing an underground mine fire in Nevada in 1869) to the last reported major accident (a fire at a company-owned bunkhouse in Arizona in 1945).The accounts of the accidents were taken from articles in the technical press and from published and unpublished reports of the Bureau of Mines. Many of the accidents have been selected for more detailed descriptions because of the unique circumstances and to show the variety of dangers involved.Tables are included to indicate the number of major accidents, with resultant fatalities, by the principal metal and nonmetal producing groups, by State, and by 10-year intervals previous to 1945. Manipulation of hand-held objects in 3D space is a complex task. Understanding how individual digits interact with a hand-held object provides helpful information for hand tool designers, researchers, clinicians, and occupational therapists. At the object-digit interface, the contact mechanics can be represented by three force and three torque components. Six-component force/torque transducers can register all the three forces and three torques at the digit-object interface, and therefore are advantageous in the study of manipulation mechanics. The large number of force and torque signals from multiple force/torque transducers are difficult to interpret and therefore making experimental research of manipulation a challenging task. The purpose of this study was to develop a 3D visualization tool for the investigation of the contact mechanics at the object-digit interfaces during manipulation tasks. Methods A 3D stick-figure hand model was created based on digitized 23 anatomical landmarks of the hand. Five miniature 6-component force/torque transducers (4 × Nano17 for the fingers, 1 × Mini40 for the thumb, ATI Industrial Automation, NC) were used to record force and torque data at the tips of individual digits. Thirty channels of force/torque signals from the transducers were collected by a 16-bit analogue-digital converter (PCI-6031, National Instrument, Austin, TX) installed in a computer. The transducers were mounted on a custom-made rectangular aluminum handle for object manipulation. Coordinate frames were established at each transducer, on the handle, and at the base of the MicroScribe digitizer. To visualize the force vectors at the digit-tips, the coordinates of the hand landmarks in the MicroScribe coordinate frame and the force vectors in local transducer coordinate frames were transformed to a common coordinate frame defined on the handle. One healthy right-handed, male subject participated in the experimental study. During the tests, the participant sat in a chair by a testing table. The forearm was strapped to an arm holder in neutral rotation position. The instrumented handle was fixed on the testing table by a C-clamp through an adapting plate. With the hand of the subject gripped on the instrumental handle, the landmarks of the instrumented handle and the transducers, as well as the anatomical landmarks of the hand were digitized using the MicroScribe digitizer for the purpose of coordinate frame establishment and transformation as described above. The subject performed three different maximum isometric voluntary contraction tasks: (1) grasping, (2) rotating in pronation, and (3) lifting. Results The 3D hand model and representative force vector clusters in a single trial of grasping, rotating, and lifting tasks are shown in Figure 1. This report covers the final results of a two-phase contract study conducted between July 1974 and October 1976. A comprehensive summary of the initial phase of the study is included. Phase I of the study involved the investigation and evaluation of all potential candidate underground systems for mining the deeper deposits of oil shale and associated minerals in the Piceance Creek basin of northwestern Colorado. Phase II called for the refinement and the detailed technical and economic analysis of the most promising system, or systems, thus disclosed. Of the several systems initially investigated and evaluated, four showed considerable merit for exploiting the deeper deposits: (1) chamber and pillar mining with spent shale backfill, (2) sublevel stoping with spent shale backfill, (3) sublevel stoping with full subsidence, and (4) block caving mining using LHD's. Final refinement and analysis of these four systems indicated their technical feasibility over at least part of the range of conditions expected in the deeper deposits. Their economic feasibility also was indicated under certain operating and market conditions. A variety of engineering, production, and cost information is provided on each of these systems.

Lack of sufficient publication funds has resulted in the accumulation of considerable unpublished experimental work on copper metallurgy by the Bureau staff . The present report gives extended abstracts of this work , as well as a discussion of the best direction for future efforts . The experimental work reported in this series of papers was done in cooperation with the University of Arizona , Tucson , Ariz . The investigations covered in the third , fifth , and seventh papers were done under the direction of G. L. Oldright and the remainder under the direction of V. H. Gottschalk .

A new record in accident prevention was made by the metal-mining a industry of the United States in 1938, as signalized by a lower fatality rate than in any previous year. The rate was less than half as high as in 1911, the earliest year for which figures are available. A good safety record was also established in the prevention of nonfatal injuries, as the injury rate was lower than in any other years except 1931 to 1935, a 5-year period notable for its unusually low injury rates. Employment was more limited in 1938 than in 1937, both in number of men employed and total number of man-hours worked. The number of workdays per man also was smaller than in 1937. Operating companies reported that 7,233 mines were active in 1938 or some part of the year and that the total number of men employed was 103,027. This figure represents the summation of the average number of men employed as reported by the companies, the average for each mine being that for the period during which the mine was active. The number of employees at all mines in 1938 was 15,402 less than in 1937. Reports covering all mines indicated a total of 188 million man-hours worked during the year, or 21 percent less than the nearly 240 million man-hours worked in 1937. In the performance of this work accidents occurred that resulted in the death of 156 employees and the injury of 1.2,722, each injured employee being disabled for more than the remainder of the clay on which he was hurt.. The fatality rate for 1938 was 0.83 per million man-hours worked, which was 9 percent more favorable than the rate of 0.91 for 1937. Nonfatal injuries occurred at the rate of 67.61 per million man-hours worked, an improvement of 10 percent compared with the injury rate of 75.37 for 1937.

"INTRODUCTION At the request of Elmer Burch, of Taos, N. Mex., the Apache mica mine was examined by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in October 1942. As the result of this examination, the Bureau of Mines proposed to extend an adit to the projection of the mica-bearing dike. The Federal Geological Survey then prepared a topographic and geologic map of the property. This information and consultations with members of the Survey 3/ assisted in determining the course and extent of the exploratory work. The author supervised the work, which was done from January to May 1944.Title to the property was in litigation during the period of the Bureau of Mines investigation. Conrad Johnson, of La Madera, N. Mex., was contesting the valley of Burch's claim location covering the Apache mine. Johnson was a prior claimant. A map made during mining operations prior to 1929, showing all mine workings, was in the possession of Johnson, but he would not produce it for inspection as long as his title to the property was in doubt. The course of the adit extension was therefore controlled by the best information and judgment otherwise obtainable."
