"The mechanism of bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis is not ye: clear. Recent studies have shown that alveolar macrophages (AM) can be stimulated by bleomycin in vitro releasing inflammatory cytokines, suggesting that the interaction of bleomycin with AM is an important step in the drug-induced fibrotic process. Bleomycin is known to bind DNA and generate oxygen radicals through complexation with Fe2+ and oxygen. To provide,more insight into the cellular oxidative property of bleomycin, v.s have developed a fluoromicroscopic method using 2',7'-dichlorofluorescin diacetate (DCFHDA) as an oxidative fluorescence probe to study the deomycin-induced intracellular oxidation in rat AM and the inhibition of the oxida¬tion by taurine, a compound known to inhibit the bleomycin-induced fibrosis. Bleomycin at 5 to 20 ug/ml has a moderate stimulatory effect (1.87- to 2.66-fold) on the secretion of superoxide anion. A high concentration of bleomycin (20 ug/ml), however, inhibits cell response to zymosan-induced secretion of superoxide anion. At 4 ug/ml, bleomycin has no effect on cell membrane integrity or morphology but results in a significant increase in intracellular oxidation. This oxidative process is Fe2-,-dependent and is accompanied by an increase in intracellular calcium (35 nM). Both the intracellular oxidation and calcium rise induced by internalized bleomycin are inhibited by pretreatment of cells with varying concentrations of taurine (25, 125, and 187.5 uM). The inhibitory effect on intracellular oxidation .vas found to be 36, 57, and 60%, respectively. These results demonstrate a stimulation-inhibition relationship between bleomycin and taurine on re cellular oxidation at a subcytotoxic dose of bleomycin, suggesting that the oxidative effect of the intracellular bleomycin-Fe2 complex is important in the initiation of the fibrotic process. — Environ Health Perspect 102 (Suppl10):91-96 (1994) IntroductionThe pulmonary system is most susceptible to oxygen radical-induced diseases due to its constant exposure to the highest oxygen tension, and the potential encounters with oxidant gases such as ozone, nitrogen oxides, and toxic doses of dust particles. This publication contains analyses and related source data for 252 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 17 States. All of the samples were obtained and analyzed during calendar year 1976 as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862 and 576.3 The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the public in general. Eighteen previous publications have presented the results of 11,065 gas analyses prior to 1976. The mining ordinance of Costa Rica dates from 1830. In spite of the numerous attempts to enact a new ordinance , it has been so much amended and reamended during the hundred years of its existence either expressly or , more often , by implication , and sometimes by Executive Decrees of which the validity has been called in question - that in most cases no one but a lawyer thoroughly conversant with Costa Rican mining practice could properly advise with reference to it . The present attempt at a digest of these laws is based on the 1929 edition of Bolandi and Johanning - the only source available in Washington . Apparently this edition has no official character , and the editors themselves often made surmises although one would think that definite facts would be available in Costa Rica where it was published .

Synthetic zeolites were tried as selective adsorbents for recovering sulfur dioxide from synthetic gases and gases produced from gypsum decomposition . Initial adsorption tests , using the synthetic gases , indicated that three of these compounds , having sulfur dioxide capacities of up to 29 grams per 100 grams of adsorbent , were satisfactory . Regeneration studies showed that over 90 pct of the sulfur dioxide desorbed from the loaded beds was of sufficient purity for direct liquefaction . However , all zeolites tested lost adsorptive capacity with repeated use . The zeolite determined to be the most promising in the preliminary synthetic gas tests was also evaluated for capability in adsorbing sulfur dioxide from gases produced by the thermal decomposition of gypsum . Despite small amounts of hydrogen sulfide in the gypsum decomposition offgas , good adsorption of sulfur dioxide was attained . The economic practicality of utilizing zeolites for sulfur dioxide removal from industrial gases was not evaluated , but the technical feasibility was demonstrated .

Recent developments in energy conversion, mining and minerals processing, pollution control, and chemical equipment have placed in-creased demands on heat-resistant alloys. Higher corrosion rates from oxidation, hot corrosion, and sulfidation have increased consumption of materials that contain critical and strategic minerals and in many cases have limited productivity. The Bureau of Mines is conducting re-search on substitute materials having greater resistance to high-temperature corrosive atmospheres above 6000 C compared to austenitic stainless steels such as AISI 304, 316, and 310, with the goal of conserving critical metals such as Cr and Ni. The substitute materials are based on Fe-Cr-Ni-Al compositions. Aluminum additions to Fe-Cr-Ni alloys significantly improve high-temperature corrosion resistance, particularly sulfidation resistance. In the alloy, devised by Bureau researchers, aluminum additions are held in the form of a second-phase precipitate, 8NiAl. Minor additions of Ti, Mn, and Si improve workability.

To identify construction materials for emerging technology in chemical and metallurgical processes, the Bureau of Mines investigated the acid resistance of ceramic materials. Eight commercial ceramic materials comprising two red shale, two fire clay, a silica, a five-claybonded silicon carbide, a carbon, and a high-alumina brick were evaluated. Samples were exposed for 110 days to 20 wt pct HCl at 50°, 70°, and 90° C and to 30 wt pct HCl at 70° C. Statistically significant changes in cold crushing strength, volume, and weight were generally small or not detected. The leach rates of Al, Ca, Fe, K, Mg, Na, Si, and Ti ions were monitored. The carbon brick sample had the best acid resistant properties with a maximum total leached ion weight loss of 0.004 wt pct. The silicon carbide, the silica, and one of the fire clay bricks also had excellent acid-resistant properties.

Calorimetric determinations of low-temperature heat capacities and standard enthalpy of formation were made by the Federal Bureau of Mines for basic aluminum sulfite, A1203?2.0S02?5.3H20. The standard values of entropy (S°), enthalpy of formation (?Hf°), and calculated Gibbs energy of formation (?Gf°) at 298.15 K are 85.2±0.1 cal/deg-mole, -943.1±1.2 kcal/mole, and -820.7±1.2 kcal/mole, respectively.

The electron optics, vacuum system, and sample stage assembly for the Bureau of Mines? electron probe X-ray spectrograph were purchased. Four scanning curved-crystal spectrometers, two reflection- and two transmission-type, were designed and constructed by the authors. The reflection spectrometers are placed in a vacuum chamber for measurement of long-wave-length X-radiation. Detection, pulse-amplitude discrimination, and recording circuits are provided for the simultaneous measurement of four X-ray spectral lines. Minimum spot size is approximately 2 microns in diameter at 30 kilovolts and a sample-to-ground current of 5 x 10-8 ampere. At this voltage and current the limit of detection with reflection spectrometers is less than 0.05 weight-percent for most elements. The limit of detection for elements determined by transmission-type spectrometers, evaluated at 35 kilovolts and 5 x 10-8 ampere, is approximately 0.1 weight--percent for all elements having excitation voltages below 20 kilovolts. In general, reflection spectrometers exhibited satisfactory but poorer resolution than the transmission type, resolution of the spectrometers being limited primarily by crystal imperfections, with greater mosaic structure being introduced by the grinding process for the reflection crystals. Several applications of the electron probe X-ray spectrograph are described. Analysis of a uranium-steel is discussed in detail to illustrate calculation of composition from measured X-ray intensities.

General expressions for evaluating various thermodynamic properties applicable to the van der Waals equation of state have been derived. These formulas were subsequently used to evaluate various thermodynamic functions in the two-phase region. The results indicate that, for a van der Waals fluid, there is a finite discontinuity in the second derivative of the vapor pressure curve, in the second derivative of the chemical potential or Gibbs free energy at the critical point, and in the heat capacity at constant volume measured at the critical density. Numerical values are tabulated and graphs are presented for all functions calculated.

Figure 1-1 shows the basic transmitter design concepts used for the pulse system, the half-wave CW system, and the full-wave CW system. The antenna current waveform is also shown for each transmitter for typical operating frequencies and antennas. The switches shown in Figure 1-i were actually implemented using solid state devices. In all three systems the signaling format may be interrupted to conserve power and thereby extend battery life. Frequency accuracy and stability is achieved using a tuning fork oscillator in the transmitters and tuning fork filters in the receivers for all three systems. This provides the narrow reception bandwidths needed to enhance signal detectability. All three systems also use frequency assignment for identification purposes. The location schemes employed are likewise identical, each being based on detecting the null (signal minimum) of the horizontal magnetic field on the surface. Since these systems are basically similar, the primary purpose is to select the system which gives the maximum signal detectability on the surface from a manpack transmitter operating in the mine. Both the pulse and half-wave C W systems use a d. c. pulse to energize the loop antenna. However, with the pulse system, this pulse duration is short compared to the pulse repetition rate (prf), whereas with the half-wave C W system the pulse duration equals one-half the period of the switching frequency. In the pulse system, energy from the battery is stored in a capacitor so that during the switching interval the internal resistance of the power source can be considered almost negligible. Both transmitters must drive a loop antenna which is a reactive load having inductance, L, and resistance, Ra.

Knoop hardness indentations were studied and measured with the electron microscope on TiB2, HfC, and A1B12 crystals. A detailed description of replicating the indentations using collodion and Faxfilm is made. A John Hopkins grating having 28,800 lines per inch was used to accurately determine the magnification used on the electron microscope. The primary objectives were to prepare carbon replicas of hardness indentations, to measure the indenations accurately, and to compare the results with those obtained with the light microscope. The resulting data showed excellent agreement between the measurements made on the replicas with the electron microscope and those made with the optical microscope. The replicas made from collodion showed slightly better agreement with the light optical values than did the replicas made from Faxfilm.

The natural vertical fracture system in bituminous coalbeds is called cleat. Cleat orientation commonly controls the direction of mining with major development paralleling the face cleat. Previous researchers have categorized the origin of cleat as endogenetic, relating the origin of cleat to compaction and coalification, and exogenetic, relating the origin of cleat to tectonic forces. In the coalbeds studied for this report it was found that tectonic forces were the controlling factor of cleat formation. Face cleats were formed as extension fractures during structural deformation, and butt cleats, as release fractures during erosion and uplift. The face cleat of the Pittsburgh coalbed rotates from N 80° W in north-western West Virginia to N 57° W in southwestern Pennsylvania; the face cleat maintains a perpendicular orientation to the shifting axial trend of local structures. Cleat orientation in other bituminous coalbeds in Virginia, Utah, Oklahoma, and Central Pennsylvania showed a similar relationship to local structure. Directional permeability of coal is directly related to cleat. Holes drilled perpendicular to the face cleat yield from 2.5 to 10 times the amount of gas released as compared with holes drilled perpendicular to the butt cleat.

"INTRODUCTION During the past 4 or 5 years the frequent occurrence of bumps in coal mines of the Cumberland field, in Harlan County, Ky., and Wise County, Va., has caused much apprehension among miners and mining officials of that region.These bumps have caused many deaths and injuries, and have been increasing in frequency. Eight men were killed and a number injured by bumps in the first 4 months of 1934. Their unpredictable occurrence and the usual absence of any preliminary warning tremors or sounds, such as ordinarily precede a large fall of roof, cause fear of other bumps and impair the morale of mine workers.Acknowledgments This report on bumps in coal mines of the Cumberland coal field of Kentucky and Virginia is based on an investigation made at the urgent request of .the Harlan County Coal Operators Association, through James F. Bryson, director of safety of the association, to the Director of the United States Bureau of Mines, following a series of disastrous bumps in. Harlan County, Ky., and Wise County, Va. The request was granted and the writer detailed to undertake the investigation, which was made in June 1934.The officials of certain operating companies in the Cumberland field gave every facility for examining the conditions accompanying bumps in their mines. This study investigated the formation of vapor complexes between aluminum chloride and the chlorides of iron, titanium, and silicon. For the A1-Fe-C1 system the proposed gaseous complex species is Al2Fe2C112(g), which is formed according to the reaction 2A1C13(s) + 2FeCl3(s) = Al2Fe2C112(g) The corresponding free energy expression was determined to be ?G° = 38091.49 - 71.45 ? T 400 < T < 600°K The vapor composition above AlC13 melts contaminated with FeC13 was calculated. In the Al-Ti-CI and Al-Si-Cl systems the proposed vapor complex species are Al2Ti2Cl14(g) and Al2Si2Cl14(g) respectively. Free energy expressions were estimated for the formation of the two complex species. Again, the vapor composition above AlCl3 melts contaiminated with TiCl4 or SiCl4 was determined. The results of this study were compared with previous studies on the three systems.

The purification of hafnium by electron- beam melting at moderate energy inputs and at low pressures was examined in detail . Most metallic impurities and hydrogen were removed in the first few minutes of operation ; oxygen , carbon , and nitrogen were removed at a slower rate . Samples treated by electron bombardment suffered a small loss of weight and a gradual lowering of hardness . The magnitude of each change varied with the energy input and the duration of the melt . Analysis of the data confirms the loss of oxygen as a hafnium monoxide . Approximate activity coefficients for other contaminants are given .

Diamond -drilling blast holes at Eastern Magnetite Mine C is proving economical in boundary shrinks , in removing pillars not readily accessible for percussion drilling , and in driving scraper drifts . The cost per foot drilled is greater than for percussion drilling , but savings in associated factors outweigh this handicap . The rocks drilled include trap rock and magnetite ore . The mining method is the panel , block- caving system utilizing scraper sublevel drifts instead of branch raises to convey the ore to the haulage level . Diamond -drilling blast holes was begun early in 1945. Three rigs equipped with noncoring bits are now in active operation two shifts per day . They are owned by the company , and the drill operators are paid by the day . In shrinkage stopes the drill is mounted on a horizontal bar set against opposite walls of the stope . Stoping holes are horizontal , which gives better results in blasting and requires fewer set ups . In scraper drifts the drill is mounted on a horizontal bar clamped to two columns about feet apart . Trim holes around the periphery of the drift and reliever holes are drilled 50 to 80 feet in length . A 10 - foot wedge cut drilled with a stoper is blasted in conjunction with a corresponding length of the trim holes to effect a 10 -foot advance of the full- sized drift . Recent drilling averages 97 feet per machine shift , excluding time utilized in setting up and moving the machine , hand mucking , and barring down . The feet drilled per bit at present is 417. These data represent the average for drilling in both rock (waste) and ore . Percussion drilling utilizes three types of wet drills . Detachable bits are standard . Gage changes for new bits is 1/8 inch and for reconditioned bits 1/16 inch . The life of a bit is five uses . Resharpening is on contract . A drill carriage is used in haulage headings .

A program with the objective of developing a fast, accurate instrumental method of analyzing mine dust for incombustible content has been underway in the Bureau of Mines for several years. Several prototype instruments making use of a gamma-ray backscatter technique have resulted. Although extensive laboratory testing has shown that these instruments are accurate under laboratory conditions, only extensive field testing will prove their ultimate practicality and usefulness. This report shows that under most conditions these devices are at least as accurate as the volumetric method and much faster in use. Other data obtained during the same study concerning mine dust are presented; these concern moisture content, sample bulk density distribution, and some particle size distribution information.
