SYNOPSIS A back-analysis procedure based upon 35 mm photography was developed on a laboratory scale for the pur¬pose of determining the percentage of oversize particles known to be present in heaps of fragmented rock. Eight simple blends of crushed stone containing varying percentages of oversize on a 1:40 modelled scale were examined. Simulated test conditions for the following were subjected to the photographic study: (1) a bench heap, (2) the surface exposure of a partially excavated heap, (3) a gravity-sorted surface as occurs on an apron dump, and (4) four quadrant views of an incrementally built conical heap of rock fragments. The best back-analysis determinations were obtained from (4), the cone, over all eight blends of fragments. The mean error was within -0,16 per cent of the true value, with a range of ± 1,872. This was for oversize contents of 5 to 20 per cent where a minimum 25 per cent of the photograph area was processed by digitizer. The worst results were from the apron dump at - 1,462 per cent for a mean error of ± 4,174 per cent. The intermediate results were from the undisturbed bench at -0,186 per cent with a mean error of ±2,862 per cent.

In this research, in order to predict the peak particle velocity (PPV)(as vibration indicator) caused by blasting projects in the excavations of the Karoun III power plant and dam, three techniques including statistical, empirical, and neural network were used and their results were interpreted and compared. First, multivariate regression analysis (MVRA) was used as statistical approach. Next, PPV was predicted using some widely used empirical models. Lastly, an artificial neural network was used. In the ANN model, maximum charge per delay, total charge per round, distance from blast site, direction of firing, blasthole length, number of blastholes, total delay in milliseconds, number of delay intervals, and average specific charge were taken into consideration as input parameters and consequently the PPV as output parameter. The results of the techniques were interpreted from two points of view. Firstly, the correlation between the observed data and predicted ones, secondly the total error between observed data and predicted ones. The MVRA had a satisfactory correlation but its error of estimation was comparatively very high. The empirical model had reliable correlation and a small error of estimation; in total the results of empirical method were more reliable than those of MVRA. Generally, the ANN approach showed very high correlation and a very small error. The results of this research indicated that the ANN model is the best predicting model for PPV in comparison with other approaches.

Dr E. C. Hanekom (Visitor): Two years ago we used the bubble pick-up technique as developed at Anglo American Corporation for screening candidate flotation agents prepared in our laboratories. It was obviously necessary to know to what extent the technique gave reproducible results and a statistical evaluation of the test method was made using a mineral sample provided by Anglo American Corporation. A bubble of 2.0 mm diameter was used and the measuring graticule was divided into squares (units) with sides of 5.0 mm at 25 X magnification. The mineral granules had diameters from 53 to 74 mm. The bubble was loaded by depressing it against a layer of mineral grains to give an arbitrary but constant compression of 0.4-0.5 mm. It was rolled five times through 2 mm horizontal displacement. The bubble was then lifted, its load compacted by gently stirring and the projected area measured in squares (units) on the grid. Each substance was tested at 5 ppm concentration in distilled water at five points in the pH range 3-6. With these standardized conditions of operation the reproducibility of the test was studied. Four materials were tested and at each pH value the procedure of forming a bubble, picking up granules and counting the units was repeated ten times. From these results the standard deviation for a single count at any pH value was calculated for each material (Table 1. The coefficient of variation of approximately 3 per cent was relatively low and it was decided that further refinements in the counting procedure would be of doubtful benefit with the present apparatus. Similar experiments were carried out with 12 sample materials. In this case the bubble formation and pick-up were repeated four times at each pH value, the mean value was calculated for each set of four observations and final pick-up values for the materials were obtained by selecting the highest mean count. Each test was completely repeated a number of times as indicated in Table 2 and the standard deviation calculated. The results allowed the selection of the more promising materials and the rejection of poor performers at the 95 per cent confidence level. All tests were carried out by one operator. Some evidence was obtained that the method is sensitive to operator bias. In conclusion it can be said that from all the results analyzed it would appear that once operation conditions are fixed (viz operator, pH control) the precision of the method is adequate. Gold mining has been undertaken in South Africa for more than a century. A great proportion of that mining has been from the Witwatersrand Basin; a geological phenomenon that has few parallels throughout the world. It has produced some 47 000 tonnes of gold mainly from underground mines, many of which have been truly world class gold mines. The gold mines of the Witwatersrand Basin have dominated world gold production from their inception and their production has been one of the cornerstones of the development of South Africa as a whole. The mines have some very specific characteristics; their sheer size, the depth of extraction, the nature of the orebodies, and their labour-intensive methods. The mines have also been part of the Mining House concept-a concept unique to South Africa. South African production has declined from a maximum of 1000 tonnes in 1970 to 470 tonnes in 1997. This, as a percentage of western world production, has declined from a maximum of 79 per cent (in 1970) to 21 per cent of world production (in 1997). The nineties' have seen South Africa and its mining companies move onto the world stage and face the harsh realities of having to compete in all spheres of business with their aggressive counterparts principally in Australia, Canada and the USA. The fight is for investment funds with the owners looking for the best returns on their money. In his address Roger Dixon will examine the current situation in the gold mining industry and examine the competitiveness of the mines of the Witwatersrand Basin compared with their peers worldwide. He will also discuss some of the fundamental challenges facing South African gold mines in the areas of legislation, technology, industrial relations, and health and safety. The environment in which the mines operate has changed radically in recent years and their ability to respond to these challenges will determine their future existence.

This paper sets out to consider a specific type of corrosion protection system, which is referred to as a Duplex Coating system. The dictionary describes a duplex system as consisting of two elements or a “twofold” composition. The duplex system described in this presentation is such a two-part corrosion protection coating, viz, hot dip galvanizing as the firm base or primer, followed by a top paint system designed to combat severe corrosive environmental conditions encountered in nature. In principle, the duplex system is a cost effective and balanced, designed coating that is suited to the environmental conditions and service life requirements.

[ ] Great Basin Gold Ltd. (GBG) owns the Hollister Mine and operates it through the wholly owned subsidiary Rodeo Creek Gold, Inc. The property is located in northern Nevada on the Carlin Trend gold belt within the historic Ivanhoe Mining District. The mine is located on the western edge of the Northern Nevada Rift, a major north-northwest trending structural zone that has localized middle Miocene volcanic rocks and numerous epithermal gold deposits. The precious metal deposits are low-sulfidation epithermal systems characterized by banded quartz veins with electrum and silver selenides. The Hollister Mine will employ the selective underground mining method of cut and fill. This will be combined with split shooting (resuing mining method) to optimize recovery and reduce dilution. The focus of mining will be on extraction of ?ounces? from the narrow-veins rather than trying to maximize tons. The initial drifts will be excavated along the strike of the vein and then capped with a substantial concrete sill pillar. Back stoping with hand held drills will be used to selectively mine the vein. The stopes will be backfilled with waste rock material. With every lift, an 18 inch concrete cap will be poured onto the backfill waste rock to prevent gold values from being lost into the fill. Targeted ore production rate will be over 400 tons per day. With current ore reserves, project life is estimated to be around eight years; however, Hollister geologists view the site as one of the most prospective systems for bonanza vein deposits in Nevada. RyderTaken as a whole, the difference between the four papers in this session were perhaps more illuminating than their similarities. The titles of the first and second papers contained the word 'simulation', and in both papers random number generation was relied upon in the selection of inputs from empirical distributions, but the nature of the models to which these values were inputs were quite different. The third paper displayed another method of uniting the empirical and the theoretical in a linear programming formulation whose matrix coefficients were measured empirically, and here some apt remarks on computer implementation were included. This paved the way for the last paper which abandoned all theoretical pretensions in favour of a detailed description of computer implementation and perhaps as a result gave rise to the most feeling audience participation.The systems mentioned were developed for the iron, petrol, copper and gold producing industries in the US, Canada, Zambia and South Africa..As with all the parallel sessions, contributions from the floor may have been limited by the shorter time available to delegates to acquaint themselves with the papers before the session. In spite of this, and due largely to the active chairman¬ship of Dr Cook, the discussion during the session which is summarized here contributed much to the information contained in the papers themselves.In his presentation, Dr Calder summarized his paper. He expected that simulation would be used in future on an almost universal basis in open pit mining. It could contribute new knowledge more cheaply than experimentation in the flea For example, this study had shown what was previously thought to be a matter of more shovels and trucks was really a blasting problem, and improving blasting had increased production to the desired level. The simulation had shown that uniformity of truck performance was a desirable factor. It had also been used to study the advisability of a dispatching system.Dr Ramani contended that where equipment characteristics were available, deterministic standard simulation could adequately simulate systems in which interference occurred. Operator performance could be measured against perfor¬mance curves predicted by standard simulation and poor operators spotted and retrained. The present system did not take into account variability in truck loading, for instance. Dr Calder replied that if the number of variables was large, the standard approach became too complicated for operating personnel to follow. He admitted he had not tried it. The variability of truck loading could be coped with easily using the Monte Carlo approach. Operator variability was already incorporated because the time studies are actual."

An assessment is made of the possible scope for the use of activated charcoal as the solid adsorbent in an upflow fluidized-bed contactor, and a pilot-plant programme for the recovery of low concentrations of dissolved gold in this contactor is described. It was found possible to produce an effluent that contains less than 0,01 p.p.m. of dissolved gold.

The effect of high solids concentration and coarse particle sizes (d50 ranges 90?300 µm) on the viscosity of a suspension of water and silica sand was investigated. The experiments were designed to include conditions that have been tested by other authors and those encountered in the operation of tumbling mills. The rheological data was measured using a tube rheometer with operating pseudo shear rates of up to 1500 s-1. The rheograms obtained depicted dilatant behaviour. The Otswald-de Waele, Bingham, Herschel-Buckley and Casson models were fitted to the experimental data. The Herschel-Buckely model, which approximates the yield point and gives an indication of the shear thinning or shear thickening behaviour of the suspension, was found to provide the best description of the flow curves for all slurries. The Herschel-Buckely model was then used to determine the apparent viscosity of all the tests. The apparent viscosity and yield stress increased with solids concentration and particle size at the different pseudo shear rates. The increase in slurry viscosity with solids concentration was attributed to increased frequency of particle-particle interactions. The increase in slurry viscosity with particle size was attributed to increased inertial effects. At low shear rates the sand slurry exhibited shear thinning behaviour for all solids concentrations. At higher shear rates above 1000 s-1the high solids concentration suspensions exhibited a transition from shear thinning to a shear thickening behaviour.

Although the De Beers group has a long history of placer mining on land, the group only became actively involved in deep water marine diamond exploration and mining in1983 with the formation of De Beers Marine. Full-scale commercial mining commenced around 1991. Since then, the group marine mining capability has grown into a formidable fleet of 8 large deep water (>70 m) mining vessels, as well as other special purpose geo-survey platforms. Marine diamond production by the group is expected to be just short of 1 million carats in 2006. DeBeers operates across the entire value-chain spectrum from geology and geo-survey, through sampling to mining, and finally ore processing into high value concentrate. Supporting these operations involves significant service activities such as maintenance, security, logistics and environmental management. Specific challenges exist in terms of developing or acquiring appropriate technology for marine mining. These challenges have resulted in DeBeers operating extensive in-house R&D and projects departments, as well as drawing extensively from technology partners. An array of computational and test facilities are also available to support R&D and projects activities. Hydro transport in various guises is key to the current approaches to marine mining and ore processing. Use is made of airlift and centrifugal pumping for hydraulic hoisting of very coarse gravel, while splitters, launders, dewatering, elutriators, jet-pumps, centrifugal pumps, dense medium circuits, pipeline systems, and instrumentation for coarse abrasive particles are used extensively in the ore processing plant.

After the milling and flotation of the platinum bearing ore, the flotation concentrate is electrically smelted in 6-in-line electric arc furnaces and the resulting furnace matte treated in Peirce Smith converters to remove the iron. The iron-free (less than 1% Fe) converter matte is granulated and sent to the base metals and precious metals refineries for further processing. During the smelting and converting processes two distinct gas-strength gas streams are produced: ?The Peirce Smith converter off-gas contains 4%?9% SO2which is treated in a conventional sulphuric acid plant to produce 94% H2SO4. ?The electric furnace off-gas contains 0.9% SO2which was (until September 2002) vented through a 91- metre high stack to atmosphere. In October 2002 Impala Platinum commissioned a SULFACID® plant at its smelter in Rustenburg, which recovers the SO2from the electric furnace off-gasses into a weak sulphuric acid solution. The SULFACID® technology utilizes wet activated carbon to oxidize the SO2toSO3. The SO3reacts with the water on the catalyst and is washed off the catalyst bed as a sulphuric acid solution with up to 13 wt. H2SO4. The plant operates at 60ºC and at atmospheric pressure. The SULFACID® technology is widely used in the pigment industry. This is, however, the first application of the technology on electric furnace off-gas. Owing to the helical construction of the wires and strands in a triangular-strand rope, a torque is generated when the rope is restrained and tensioned. When a rope is suspended vertically, there is a load differential along its length due to the self weight of the rope. This load differential gives rise to an initial torque differential m the rope. Since the rope is constrained only at the conveyance and sheave wheel, the torque along its length must be constant ID order to maintain equilibrium, a variation in lay length occurs so that the lay length at the conveyance end decreases, and the lay length at the sheave end increases, from the manufactured state. The tension-torsion testing of steel-wire ropes is discussed, and it is shown how the results of the tests can be used to predict static in-shaft torsional behaviour. The expected changes in strand lay length in very deep shafts (deeper than 2500 m) are calculated, and the associated problems and of severe changes m lay length on rope endurance and safety are discussed. Examples of current in-service rope distortions such as kinks and corkscrews are shown.

"The first in this series of two papers, on the potential of renewable electricity sources for mining operations in South Africa, investigated the internal structure of mining corporations to evaluate feasible alternative electricity sources that were identified as through earlier research. The purpose of this paper is to combine current knowledge about the external macroeconomic and the internal environments to produce a clear picture of how renewable sources of electricity could perform from the perspective of mining corporations in South Africa. The multi-attribute value theory (MAVT) approach was adapted to structure the research and results. The model was fed with real-time data provided from five different energy companies and four mining corporations operating in South Africa. The results show that the performance of hybrid versions of the currently used electricity sources (diesel generators and Eskom grid connection) with solar PV and onshore wind is favourable compared with the current sources alone. The advantage of diesel generators is significantly greater than that of the Eskom grid connection. By combining the macroeconomic influences with the MAVT results, hybrid solar PV versions are identified as having the greatest potential. In second place are hybrid wind solutions, which have the shortcoming that good wind conditions occur only in coastal regions where there are fewer mining activities. Geothermal hybrid versions are the least favourable owing to the lack of service infrastructure and high initial investment costs.IntroductionRecent developments in the macroeconomic environment necessitate an investigation of the internal structure of mining corporations to evaluate possible alternative electricitygenerating sources (Roehrl and Riahi, 2000). To be able to combine current knowledge of macroeconomic factors and the internal structure of mining corporations, the research process is presented in two papers. The first paper (Votteler and Brent, 2016) investigated the internal structure and argued that a strategic tool should be used to evaluate electricity sources from the perspective of mining corporations. The multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) approach was selected as the most appropriate strategic tool. Based on a literature review of previous similar MCDA approaches in energy planning, it was concluded that no adaptation of MCDA methods could be found from a corporate, mining, or South African perspective. Finally, the paper investigated the internal evaluation structure in collaboration with mining corporations, by identifying the criteria they use to evaluate electricity sources."

This paper summarizes the works that the Research “Group of Ground Engineering”, belonging to the Mining Department of the University of Oviedo, Spain, has been developing in close cooperation with the Regional Mining Department, since 2001, in order to control and monitor an experimental underground limestone exploitation by the room and pillars method. The aim of the current research is not only the geotechnical characterization of the rock mass (by means of laboratory and site tests) or the instrumentation of its displacements and stress changes (using convergence meters, INCREX probe, extensometers and rigid inclusion cells), but, moreover, to undertake intensive monitoring and control of such pilot mine, which is mined exclusively in order to accomplish this research. The data transmission was made on line via Internet, to achieve a full understanding of the behaviour of the experimental mine, to access data from remote locations and to visualize results from a website. All the collected information becomes input data for several numerical models using finite differences under a program developed in the research Group, ALMEC. The simulation and a final economical analysis lead to a design of an underground exploitation, at production scale, for a resource that is traditionally mined by means of open-pit process methods that could be worked underground with less environmental impact. The main purpose achieved by this exhaustive analysis is the technical and economic viability of such mine, for their optimisation for a future productive exploitation.

This paper describes briefly a computerised model of the South African electricity system which has been developed jointly by the Atomic Energy Board and the Electricity Supply Commission. The results of an analysis of this system have been subjected to a fairly extensive sensitivity analysis which reveals that up to the year 1990 between 680 and 700 million tons of coal will be required for electric power generation, together with between 7 000 and 10 000 tons of uranium. This result is fairly insensitive to data variations, but the prediction of a cumulative requirement up to the year 2000, of between 1 300 and 1 800 million tons of coal and 25000 to 70000 tons of uranium, proves to be very data-sensitive.

A powerful, interactive metallurgical process simulator for use on micro- computers has been developed in the Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand. MICROSIM presently allows simulation of all ore-dressing flowsheets and a selection of hydrometallurgical unit operations, and is extendable to all such processes. MICROSIM is written in Pascal. This modern language provides very versatile data structures which can be effectively used to solve the major problem in generalised simulation programs, namely storage and transmission of data relating to liquid and solid phases. Dynamic memory allocation allows optimal utilisation of computer storage space. The simulator utilises very efficient precalculation algorithms that determine the tear streams for optimal sequential modulator calculation convergence. Microcomputer graphics simplifies flowsheet specification, and form-filling data capture with supplied default values eliminate most common input errors.

Lebowa Platinum Mines has been in operation since the late 1960s and is a relatively small producer compared to Anglo Platinum?s other operations. The mine has never had substantial capital investment to expand its production scale even though its resource base is estimated in excess of 100 years at current mining rates. It is forecast that the mine will become unprofitable after 2008 due to the workings of the ageing infrastructure, the Merensky Reef operations being further from the shafts, decrease in productivity and increase in operating costs. In order to reverse the forecast decline in operational inefficiencies and profitability the replacement of the Merensky Reef operations at Vertical and UM2 shafts with the development of a 120 Ktpm Brakfontein Merensky Reef Mines is in progress. This paper covers the operational readiness framework developed from the control budget estimate and outlines an integrated business process adopted to ensure that the requirements of the investment proposal are met. The operational readiness framework, which addresses the transition process, will ensure that at operational start-up, all appropriate operating systems, procedures, information and legal requirements are in place, whereas the business integration process will aim to develop and sustain an organization with the appropriate infrastructure and workforce equipped with the necessary skills to meet Brakfontein?s requirement, and where possible embark on an optimized accelerated production initiative to ensure that the objectives of the investment proposal are sustained. At the Hansa Mine in Dortmund, Germany, coarse run-of-mine coal, up to 60 mm in particle size, has been brought to the surface hydraulically from a depth of 850 m since November 1977. Hoisting is done by a three-chamber pipefeeder, by means of which up to 400 t/h can be lifted. The pipefeeder operates without problems, and has so far shown itself to be efficient and reliable. Vertical hoisting can be carried out by water supplied from the surface, from underground, or from a surface water supply in combination with minewater from underground. Water that flows into the mine, which would in any event have to be pumped to the surface, can be utilized for hoisting operations. The energy costs per ton of coal for a lifting height of 850 m vary between 41 and 62 South African cents, and therefore lie within the range of costs that apply to conventional hoisting.
