To determine the characteristics of a mineral deposit, the usual practice is to take samples, analyse the properties of those samples and infer the characteristics of the deposit from these properties. This analysis can be done using statistical methods. In the present work we are concerned with two types of statistical approaches, classical statistics and spatial statistics. If one uses classical statistics to represent the properties of the sample values, the assumption is made that the values are realizations of a random variable. The relative positions of the samples are ignored, and it is assumed that all sample values in the mineral deposit have an equal probability of being selected. The likely presence of trends, zones of enrichment, or pay shoots in the mineralization, is ignored. The fact that two samples taken close to each other are more likely to have similar values than if taken far apart is also not taken into consideration. In contrast, spatial statistics will be used if one chooses to consider that the sample values are realizations of random functions. On this hypothesis, the value of a sample is a function of its position in the mineralization of the deposit, and the relative position of the samples is taken into consideration. The similarity between sample values is quantified as a function of the distance between samples and this relationship represents the foundation of spatial statistics. There are few situations where classical statistics can be used. The assumption that all sample values in the mineral deposit have an equal likelihood of being represented will be satisfied only if the sample values are randomly distributed, or if the sample positions are random. Sample values are in fact never randomly distributed within a mineral deposit. Further- more, geologists usually avoid taking samples at random (random sampling), as it is correctly accepted that samples located on a regular grid, or approximately on a regular grid, give more information than randomly located samples. In practice, classical statistics should be used only in the early stages of exploration, when the number of samples available is relatively small and the distances between samples are large. In these circumstances, and whenever the information available is not sufficient to permit the use of spatial statistics, application of the methods described in this chapter is justified.

The South African narrow reef hard rock mining industry has been stuck in a time warp with relatively little change in the mining process in the last century. This paper presents a methodology on how to implement change in narrow reef hard rock mining. It then explores a number of technologies that have been introduced into this mining industry and the impact that they have had on the mining process. The author then presents his view on whether the defined change process has been followed and sets out to identify the most critical aspect of ensuring that change is successfully implemented. Future demand will also be speculated on.

When coal properties are estimated geostatistically for mine planning in the hardcoal industry, there is one important supposition which influences the reliability of prediction of economically profitable parts of the deposit. This is the fact that activities in hardcoal exploration and mine planning are characterized by distinct levels of information and knowledge upon which decisions of economic import must be based, for example, whether exploration should proceed or not, or which methods and strategies should be used to maximize search efficiency. To get more reliable results for mine planning, in particular, advanced kriging methods (e.g. conditional simulation) have to be introduced and checked for their reliability in historical analyses (post-mortem studies). By using this feedback, kriging results from underground samples or production data can be compared with results gained by advanced geostatistical methods from exploration boreholes.

The results of a series of measurements of accelerations and guide-roller loads made on mineshaft conveyances are given, together with the predictions of these accelerations and loads based on a computer programme. The analysis of the measurements is described, and the results of the measurements and computer predictions when compared show reasonable agreement. Some parameters that increase the guide-roller loads are identified, and their effects are studied, together with some comments on the total loads. Finally, a possible format for a design specification is discussed, and some tentative design values are given.

The literature on shotcrete is reviewed with the object of identifying aspects that have not been addressed specifically in terms of its structural performance and manufacture as applied to underground mines. The programme and results of a series of full-scale tests on mesh- and fibre-reinforced shotcrete panels are presented, from which it is concluded that fibre-reinforced shotcrete is competent, especialy at large deformations, and is equivalent in structural performance to mesh-reinforced shotcrete for a fibre content of 3 per cent by mass: furthermore, that the support design systems developed for mesh-reinforced shotcrete are directly applicable to fibre-reinforced shotcrete. The Q-NATM system for the design of temporary tunnel support is presented briefly as one such system. It provides for the integrity of the excavation to be considered in terms of its competence and displacement determinateness, and represents the first systematic procedure for the design of temporary tunnel support. Finally, the support designed on the basis of the Q-NATM system for the main and cross-cut tunnels on the production level in the proposed BA5 block cave at Premier Mine is presented as a practical example of the design of fibre-reinforced shotcrete as part of an overall support system.

A method, based on the macroscopic population balance equation allowing the dynamic simulation of a multistage adsorption plant given an arbitrary rate expression, is described. The partial differential equations resulting from this method are simplified using the method of characteristics. The simplified equations can then be solved using standard ODE integration techniques. The procedure is illustrated by means of data typical of a CIP application. Requirements for data structures which allow the incorporation of the carbon-in-pulp (CIP) model (and other unit models) into a general metallurgical simulator are described. Based on these considerations, it is concluded that more generality in the description of distributed quantities such as loading and particle size is provided by the use of mass density at fixed class boundaries, rather than discrete masses within fixed classes as has hitherto been used by ore-dressing simulators.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc (Eng) (Chemical) The generation and control of manganese sulphide particle size distribution using various mixing configurations were investigated. Specifically, this paper discusses how varying mixing intensities on a macro and micro scale affect the resultant manganese sulphide particle size distribution (PSD) at a constant concentration. The mixing variations were achieved using various Y- and T-mixers as premixing devices into a jacketed, agitated vessel. The reagents used to generate the seeds were aqueous manganese sulphate and sodium sulphide solutions. The results showed that the absence of micromixing resulted in very poor control of the particle size distribution, the particle size and the number of particles produced. This was due to the fact that the macromixing time is much greater than the corresponding precipitation time, resulting in different mixing regions existing within the reactor. From the micromixing experiments, the T?mixer was found to be the most effective mixing device at lower concentrations due to the T-mixer providing a faster mixing time than the other mixing configurations, thereby effectively localizing the supersaturation and hence controlling the precipitation. The results obtained from the direct addition without the extension pipe (i.e. short mixing time) indicated a general increase in mean particle size and decrease in total particle number at reagent concentration of 0.007 mol.dm-3as compared to the corresponding micromixing experiments. The phenomenon may be due to incomplete crystallization at the immediate exit of the mixing device. Further experiments need to be conducted before any conclusions can be drawn about the precipitation mechanisms.

Methods for the analysis of seismic hazards in mines are reviewed as illustrations of the techniques that are being used in some South African mines. The classical parameters that describe a hazard are the seismic activity rate, ?, the Gutenberg-Richter value, b, and, occasionally, the maximum regional magnitude, mmax The activity rate is calculated readily owing to the inherent simplicity of its definition. The evaluation method presented for the Gutenberg-Richter b value takes into account the presence of mmax Three statistical procedures are described for the assessment of mmax which the maximum observed magnitude, Xmax a crucial role. Often, the configuration of mine seismic networks is changed, or the networks are improved, which inevitably gives rise to changes in the completeness of the seismic catalogues. The routine analysis of seismic hazards must account for these time dependent changes. A method for the evaluation of hazards is reviewed that accommodates varying levels of quality in the catalogues. Finally, the concept of the volume of ground motion (VGM) is presented. This is a technique that allows for most aspects of seismic hazards in mines. The advantage of the VGM is that a hazard can be described by one physically significant value: the volume of rock (cumulated over a time period) in which the ground motion exceeds some critical particle velocity. Data from the gold mining region in South Africa known as the Far West Rand is used in a demonstration of the discussed methods of hazard analysis.

The relationship between population growth and steel consumption since the beginning of the twentieth century is indicated, reference being made to the increasing capacity of production units and the resultant increased pollution in the same area. The need for the control of fugitive emissions with its associated high cost is pointed out. There is a direct relationship between energy and pollution, and examples are given of several improvements that have been made to achieve better energy usage and reduced pollution. Several practical examples of air-pollution control systems are described as applicable to the main metallurgical steel processes of today. In conclusion, reference is made to the fact that, with the improvements attained in reducing pollution, the public will not tolerate a decline in the standards already attained. Environmental control and better energy utilization will continue to be important aspects of steel-plant design and operation.

The three-product cyclone was originally developed in Russia and is now extensively used in China. The cyclone has recently entered the South African coal industry, and with the obvious advantages that this item of process equipment offers our ever-evolving industry it is safe to assume that it will add value to dense medium circuits in South Africa. Some of the possible applications include: ? Producing multiple products using a single dense medium circuit. These can typically be a primary product with calorific value of 27.50 MJ/kg and a secondary (middling) product with a calorific value of 22 MJ/kg ? High-density separation with a low circulating medium density. Anglo Thermal Coal and Exxaro have pioneered the use of these units at Umlalazi and New Clydesdale respectively. Extensive test work has been performed at Umlalazi to determine the efficiency of the unit and to determine how it compares with the conventional DSM (Dutch School of Mines) cyclone. Some people in the coal industry were initially sceptical and expected the performance of the three-product cyclone to be inferior to that of the conventional dense medium cyclone. The results of the test work have, however, shown that the efficiency of the unit is comparable to that of the cyclones currently employed. A valid concern expressed is the control over the cut-point density of the second stage separation, and work is on-going to find the optimal way to control the secondary separation density. Theoretically, the secondary separation density can be manipulated by changing the orifices of the unit, especially the spigot of the secondary stage. This remains to be proven, and a series of tests is currently being planned. Whatever the result of these tests may be, the three-product cyclone definitely has a place in the South African coal processing industry as it offers a low OPEX and CAPEX solution for producing multiple products from a single circuit, as well as the ability to operate at very high separation densities, while making use of low-density circulating medium. Introductory remarks by author When Mr R. C. J. Goode suggested preparation of a paper in the area of manpower utilization in South Africa, I was, while keen to accept his invitation, somewhat hesitant for two reasons. Firstly, I recognized the great difficulty of making a factual contribution, because of the lack of really relevant statistical information available, the fact that much of it is out of date, and the difficulty of researching and co-ordinating it and of evaluating a statistically sound resultant viewpoint. Experience in the actual preparation of this paper has done nothing to change my view in this respect. Secondly, it is obvious that a paper presented to a meeting of this Institute, by a member of it, would be expected to devote considerable attention to the subject in the mining industry. I am not directly employed by the mining industry, although my company has carried out extensive assignments for various sectors of it both in this country and in other parts of the world, since the 1939-45 war. I am more conscious than most of the tremendous technical and managerial skills at the disposal of the industry in this country, and consequently am equally conscious of the hazards of publishing facts and figures which might be taken to indicate any criticism of performance. I am aware that some of the information that I am about to present may indeed generate comment, and possibly even critical comment. I would like to be regarded therefore in presenting this information, as a member of the group, rather than an external critic. Under these circumstances, comment can only be constructive, and this is my earnest hope. The contribution of my paper, if contribution there is, will I hope be in the area of assessing labour productivity in mining, and in secondary industry in such a way that the performance of each against its own past results is comparable. This task has not for the present been to my knowledge attempted, and in advance I wish to take out authors' insurance against legitimate criticism from professional economists and others, by stating that I am well aware of possible short-comings in the arguments. Nevertheless I believe that under the circumstances I have, with the important assistance of several people, been able to take the subject further than has been the case in the past. Finally, I have related productivity in the mining industry and in secondary industry to a target of productivity in the Republic of South Africa. I was fortunate recently in being able to attend a series of lectures by a prominent economist in America. He introduced his subject by calling it 'A broad survey of macro-economics'. Perhaps I might be permitted to describe my paper, in the same idiom, as 'The macro-management of labour'.

The refractoriness of the gold in many of the pyritic ores from the eastern Transvaal is due mainly to the association between the gold and the sulphides, but it can be due to the presence of graphltlc carbonaceous material, which complicates the recovery of the gold by virtue of its adsorption activity. In an examination of the roasting characteristics of three flotation concentrates from the Barberton area, It was found that the gold in the concentrates occurred mostly in two forms: in very fine gold particles distributed within the arsenopyrite, and in a slightly coarser form loosely associated with the pyrite. Direct cyanidation of the concentrates gave gold extractions of from 16 to 30 per cent. After the concentrates had been roasted at temperatures of 650 to 700°C for 20 minutes with rabbling, the extractions varied from 86 to over 90 per cent. Examination of the residues after cyanidation indicated that gold was present in the porous calcines or in the calcined sulphide product. This observation, together with porosity measurements, suggests that physical encapsulation of the gold particles is the main reason for the refractory behaviour of the gold in the calcines.

The Tromp distribution curve was used in an evaluation of gravity separators treating a synthetic ore made up of silica and marker minerals of various relative densities. The results pinpoint differences in the concentration of particles of different sizes, and indicate how the grade of a concentrate is likely to vary with particle size. An increase in the feed rate increased the efficiency of the 'waterless' spiral concentrator that was tested, but the multiport spiral concentrator tested was more efficient. Both spiral concentrators were found to be more efficient than the pinched sluice and the shaking table that were tested. The method was found to be a useful way of evaluating gravity concentrators, but, for ease of analysis, care must be taken in the choice of marker minerals.

Rock fall accidents continue to be the main causes of fatalities in the mining industry. The occurrence of rock falls in supported stopes implies a failure of the support system. The failure of the support system in turn implies a failure in design. In this paper, ethical issues associated with engineering design are discussed, with particular relevance to stope support design. A risk approach is introduced that will allow designs to be carried out that are compatible with the acceptable risk defined by the mining company management. The implementation of this approach would overcome the ethical shortcomings of current support design practices.

This paper illustrates the application of numerical modeling methods, in conjunction with limit-equilibrium techniques, to the location of critical slip surfaces in slope-stability problems. Initially, the Spencer slice-based method of analysis is introduced, together with a dynamic-programming algorithm for slip-surface location. This limit-equilibrium method is assessed critically through the use of an illustrative problem. The technique is then extended to locate the critical slip surface for a similar slope, but with more complex constitutive and yield relationships for the material comprising the slope. To this end, the use of the stress field generated from a finite-difference program, together with a dynamic-programming search routine, is presented as an advanced technique of slope-stability analysis for engineers.

The use of hydraulically placed backfill in the deep gold mines of South Africa has increased rapidly over the past decade. The backfill that is delivered to the placement areas has a relatively high moisture content, and it is therefore pumped into geotextile containment bags that allow excess water to drain out but retain solid particles. The specific problems associated with this process that are addressed in this paper include the loss of solid particles entrained in the excess water, the rate of strength gain of the backfill, and the post-placement shrinkage of the backfill. The results of laboratory, surface stope, and underground tests are described. The parameters that were varied included the slurry density, the particle-size distribution, and the feed rate of the slurry the concentration of added flocculant; and the type of geotextile used as containment. Suggestions are given for the optimization of the placement properties of backfill.

The price received for a commodity decreases as the quantity sold increases. all other factors remaining the same. This has been the position with gold since it was demonetized in August 1971. The result is that the marginal revenue per kilogram of gold decreases steadily with increased production. If operating losses are to be avoided, the marginal cost of production must not exceed the marginal revenue. This requirement, although not seriously violated by most invididual mines, is not met by the industry as a whole, resulting in large losses of income to the State and the shareholders. These losses are increasing, and a way of curbing or reversing this trend is described.
