Introduction In situ leaching (ISL) is an alternative method of mining uranium from deposits that are low-grade, deeplying, and water-saturated. ISL recovers uranium by transporting fluids through rock rather than by moving rock, a concept the Chinese developed over 2000 years ago for water production. This technique eventually evolved into production systems for oil, gas, sulfur, and salt. More recently, in situ methods have been developed to produce shale oil, gasified coal, geothermal energy, uranium, and copper. ISL uranium operations began in the early 1960s with Sabine Production Co. in south Texas. About the same time, Utah Construction and Mining Co. (Anderson and Richie, 1968) started similar operations in Wyoming's Shirley Basin. During the 1970s, six commercial operations were started in south Texas, (USBM, 1978) and a number of pilot operations were in various stages of development in Colorado, Wyoming, and New Mexico. This paper reviews some of the technical and economic aspects of the ISL process and briefly discusses key subsurface engineering functions as¬sociated with well pattern design and operation. While flow characteristics of a deposit are of prime importance, the following information is also needed: Depth, ore grade, total contained metal, ore thickness, flow conductivity (permeability), void space in rock (porosity), mineral type and distribution, natural groundwater flow, and structural features. Solvent selection, which is important to the economic success of the operation, takes these factors into account: Composition, rate of metal solubilization, interaction with gangue minerals, impact on rock permeability, impact on materials of construction, trace metal solubilization, cost, availability, and handling problems. Overview of ISL An ISL operation consists of these functions (Fig. 1): 1. Chemicals to dissolve and maintain uranium in solution are prepared at the surface extraction facility. 2. A set of injection wells forces the solvent into rock pores of fractures using pressure in excess of the deposit's hydrostatic pressure. 3. Solvent travels through the rock and reacts with uranium minerals to dissolve them. The solvent usually consists of an oxidant and a complexing agent in an acidic or alkaline medium. 4. A set of production wells creates a low-pressure sump where metal-enriched solution is collected for transport to the surface. 5. The enriched solution is processed to recover uranium and to separate the leaching solution for recycling through the system. The economic performance of an in situ operation may be estimated by integrating these related factors: (1) the flow rate of solution processed through the system, (2) rates of fluid injection and production from wells, (3) the rate of mineral solubilization in the liquid phase, and (4) the volume of rock swept by the fluid. As these factors reveal, ISL involves the technical disciplines of petroleum engineering, ore deposit geology, and hydrometallurgical processing. Wellfield Design Just as mineral engineers use drillhole information to plan a conventional mine, in situ engineers use similar information to design a well field. Introduction Inco is the major North American nickel producer. Initially based in Sudbury, Ontario, its past exploration activity was directed toward finding new nickel deposits. New nickel sulfide discoveries outside Sudbury have included Thompson, Manitoba; Shebandowan, Ontario; and Widgiemooltha in Western Australia as well as a host of nickel laterite deposits. The company is currently diversifying into other commodities, including gold. Inco's exploration department participated in uranium discoveries in Saskatchewan and chromite discoveries at Tiebaghi in New Caledonia. In addition, it found new gold deposits at Lupin, Northwest Territories; Crixas, Brazil; Hoyle Township, Ontario; and Casa Berardi in Quebec. Crixas and Casa Berardi are currently being evaluated by underground exploration. Figure 1 shows some Canadian Shield gold locations where Inco is or was an active participant. Base metal developments Base metal exploration in shield areas has been greatly eased by applying scientific studies. Archean nickel sulfide deposits have been found using komatiitic-flow models (Fardon, 1971). Volcanogenic massive sulfide model has been applied to copper-zinc deposits (Sangster and Scott, 1976). Such deposits were subsequently seen developing on the sea floor through black smokers (Spiess, MacDonald, and Atwater, 1980). Sedimentary processes were recognized early as important in ore formation, particularly in the southern hemisphere (King, 1976). And many ore deposits are now regarded as a simple part of the geological column (Stanton, 1960 and 1972). Petrographic work on alteration patterns in and around ore bodies was used to develop standard porphyry copper models (Lowell and Guilbert, 1970). Epithermal models for precious metals followed. Stratigraphic zonation patterns have been formulated for base metal deposits, including keel facies, ore facies, and cap or distal facies. Gold developments The work on base metal deposits naturally spilled over into precious metal exploration when the gold price was allowed to float on world money markets. Early work on elements associated with gold deposits, especially arsenic, tellurium, selenium, and mercury, pioneered more detailed geochemical work (Bagby and Berger, 1985; and Groves, Ho, and Houstoun, 1984). Geochemical patterns have been recognized around microfine gold deposits. And the study of gold precipitation patterns in modern geothermal systems has helped understand gold deposition. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, it was noticed that numerous Archean banded iron formations contained anomalous gold values. From this and other observations, the syngenetic exhalite gold model has developed. Gold deposits also occur along shears in some plutons such as the Belmoral mine in Quebec. This indicates the importance of epigenetic processes in ore formation. Shield ore settings Initial studies recognized that the major gold camps in the Canadian Shield were mostly in greenstone belts and found along "breaks," especially zones of faulting and sedimentation. Gill (1948) wrote, "Only recently, as a result of detailed mapping, has the importance of major schist zones such as the Larder Lake, Cadillac, Porcupine Creek, and Destor Breaks been recognized. These zones of persistent adjustment mark broad belts favorable for ore occurrence." The importance of shearing in ore location and regional greenstone stratigraphic position close to late sedimentary packages was clearly understood. And structural models have been further developed for some Canadian ore deposits (Hubert, Trudel, and Gelinas, 1984). In the Beardmore-Geraldton camp of northwest Ontario, the importance was soon recognized of fold noses in banded iron formation, as localizers for gold ore. Precast concrete segments have been used in sanitary sewer tunnel design for decades. Federal mandates (reduction in heavy metals and I & I), and system design changes (increased retention times) and other factors have exacerbated corrosion problems. In an effort to combat the ever-growing effect of microbiologically induced corrosion, owners, engineers, and designers have been specifying thin-film lining systems to protect precast concrete segments. These systems have compatibility and installation issues. Chemical additives or calcareous aggregates have been utilized in precast concrete, but have only proven to retard the rate of corrosion and do not eradicate the problem. Solid cast polymer segments are stronger than precast concrete, do not require linings or coatings, are impervious to ground water infiltration, and, above all, are inherently corrosion resistant through and through.

This paper presents a simplified computerized method for the prediction of maximum subsidence and the subsidence profile for the Appalachian Coal Basin using the Hyperbolic Function Profile Method. Several case histories are cited to demonstrate the appropriateness of the predictive method. In addition, sample runs and a detailed listing of the computer program is provided. Other popular subsidence prediction methods are discussed and compared with the Hyperbolic Function Profile Method.

Introduction The Pinto Valley open-pit copper mine is located in southern Arizona, 11 km (7 miles) west of Miami. Production at Pinto Valley began in 1974. About 350 Mt (386 million st) of ore and waste was removed by the end of June 1982. At that time, the mine was using more than 90 major equipment items with a total mobile fleet numbering 320. Some of the major equipment consisted of four Marion M4 rotary drills; six P&H 15, 11.5- and 19.1-m3 (15- and 25-cu yd) shovels; and 24,136- and 154-t (150¬and 170-st) Wabco haulage trucks. This equipment was used to move more than 139 kt/d (154,000 stpd) of ore and waste. The mill was processing more than 50 kt/d (55,000 stpd) of mine ore. Shutdown A two-week vacation shutdown began in July 1982. Maintenance jobs were scheduled, and most employees left for the vacation. During the vacation period, copper prices fell below $1.32/kg ($0.60 per lb). Inventories remained at alarmingly high levels. At this point the mine was losing more money operating than it would by being shut down. The vacation shutdown was first extended to five weeks. But, after further evaluation, the mine was shut down indefinitely. In Dec. 1982, Cities Services Co., owner of Miami Operations (which included the Pinto Valley mine and mill), was acquired by the Occidental Petroleum Corp. On March 1, 1983, Occidental sold the operations to Newmont Mining Corp., and Newmont created Pinto Valley Copper Corp., as a wholly owned subsidiary. Copper continued to be produced by the Pinto Valley solvent extraction-electrowinning (SX- EW) plant because of its low cost per pound of production. To ensure proper equipment care during the shutdown, maintenance management was given three goals; • maintain the SX-EW plant; • maintain the environmental and pollution control systems such as domestic water pumps and mine dewatering; and

Introduction Abandoned mill tailings deposits can be found throughout the northern Black Hills of South Dakota, indicative of mining activities that originated during the great gold rush days of 1875. The Refuse Act of 1899 attempted to regulate the deposit of debris from mines and stamp works. But, in most cases, huge volumes of mine and milling wastes were disposed of in ways no longer considered environmentally acceptable. Restoration of gold mill tailings deposits is a relatively new practice to the Black Hills area. This discussion will present an overview of the environmental setting, environmental problems associated with past tailings disposal practices, practices being implemented to solve these problems, and prospects related to present the future tailings disposal practices. Environmental Setting An understanding of climatic characteristics, geology, surface and ground water hydrology conditions, and the physical and chemical characteristics of selected mill tailings deposits will aid in understanding environmental problems associated with tailings disposal and restoration. All ores have an economic optimum particle size (Wills and Napier-Munn, 2006). This optimum value is often a compromise between the need to achieve adequate liberation for the efficient separation and recovery of valuable minerals and the energy consumed by the crushing and grinding process. It has been recognized for nearly three decades that grinding is the most expensive and least efficient stage in mineral processing (El-shall and Somasundaran, 1984). At that time it was estimated that grinding consumed between 25 and 70% of the total power required in mineral processing. This recognition drove the development of new stirred mill fine grinding technology in the 1990s (Jankovic et.al, 2003; Enderle et. al., 1997; Massey, 2008). These milling technologies have a reduced energy consumption compared to traditional fine grinding using ball mills. In the ?coarser? fine grinding applications this improvement is approximately 30%. The benefits increase to above 50% in ultrafine grinding applications (Lichter and Davey, 2006). Despite these gains, the US Department of Energy reported that an additional energy savings of up to 37% is possible in the minerals industry. They identified continuing research and development and implementing best practices in both grinding and materials handling as the primary avenues for the additional reduction (BCS, 2007).

The Piedras Verdes copper mine is a new run-of-mine (ROM), heap leach, solvent-extraction/electrowinning (SX-EW) operation located 21 km (13 miles) north-northwest of the town of Alamos in the state of Sonora, Mexico. The Piedras Verdes copper mine is wholly owned by Frontera Copper Corp. (FCC), a Canadian corporation, through its 100 percent beneficial interest in Cobre del Mayo S.A. de C.V. (CDM), a Mexican registered company. The January 2008, minable reserves were estimated to be 193.6 Mt (213 million st) at a grade of 0.36 percent copper. The overall recovery of total copper was estimated to be 61.9 percent. The property has an additional 17-year life and is designed to produce 31.7 kt/a (70 million lbs/year) of cathode copper. Construction commenced in early October 2005. The first copper cathode was produced 12 months later at a total capital cost of $100 million. Elevations at the site range from 150 to 300 m (490 to 985 ft) above sea level. The area has excellent infra-structure in the form of towns, power, water, roads, rail, airfield and access to the deepwater port of Guaymas (Fig. 1). The surrounding area is also famous for its numerous polymetallic (lead, zinc, copper, silver and gold) epithermal veins. Some of these were mined for more than 200 years and provided the wealth on which the town of Alamos was built. The original village of Piedras Verdes was located in the area of the proposed openpit mine and, consequently, it was necessary to construct a new townsite 6 km (3.7 miles) to the south before project development could commence. The new town site (Fig. 2), complete with power and water supplies, roads, sewer system, schools, clinic and recreational facilities, was completed and occupied by 49 families in September 2005. CDM received its remaining permits from the Mexican environmental authorities on Sept. 20, 2005. This enabled the company to proceed with full-scale development. CDM owns or controls 27 mining concessions covering the resource. Surface rights to the Piedras Verdes project were controlled by four Ejidos (communal agrarian and/or ranching societies) and five individual landowners. CDM has acquired all surface rights necessary for its mining operations and associated facilities either through outright purchase or long term lease agreements.

Upbeat, surprisingly so, might describe the mood at the2002 SME Annual Meeting and Exhibit in Phoenix, AZ. More than 4,000 mineral professionals gathered for three days of education, networking and product perusal. The Annual Meeting featured the theme, “Minerals for the Future@ SME” at the Feb. 25-27 gathering. Meeting attendance reached 4,039along with 479 exhibit booths show-casing 325 companies. Exhibitors found a good mix of industry types:37% from mining, 19% from processing, 20% from manufacturing and 28% from environment, education and government.

John Marks said in his acceptance of the Hartman Award in 2008 ? ?I guess that without the occasional complaint, your mine is probably over-ventilated? (Marks, 2008). Miners are seldom in this situation and often spend much of the time trying to find enough air to keep the operation running. With examination there are some things that can be done to make the best use of ventilation systems. Should there be surplus air, in which some of these options may result - financial and other benefits can be obtained. Some of the issues mine operators have needed to address recently are increased airflow requirements to dilute diesel particulates in metal and non-metal mines. Also, operations are faced with demands from reserves that are deeper, hotter and further away from fans and shafts, not to mention increased production demands. Mine ventilation air is a costly commodity, especially by the time it has been heated or cooled and moved to the bottom of the shaft and through the mine airways. Most of the options presented in this paper are useful for metal non-metal operations but some may be applicable to coal too. OPTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT Some of the areas to be addressed are shop ventilation methods, auxiliary equipment areas, dedicated intakes and returns, optimizing development, examination of mine airway utilization and alternative ventilation methods. UNDERGROUND SHOPS First, examine what is being done with the underground shop air. If it is being coursed directly to the returns there may be some potential to better utilize this, in most cases, relatively contaminant free air. Research the legal options for ventilating mine shops. MSHA regulations in 30CFR 57.4761 (1) allow the following options: To confine or prevent the spread of toxic gases from a fire originating in an underground shop where maintenance work is routinely done on mobile equipment, one of the following measures shall be taken: use of control doors or bulkheads, routing of the mine shop air directly to an exhaust system, reversal of mechanical ventilation, or use of an automatic fire suppression system in conjunction with an alternate escape route. The alternative used shall at all times provide at least the same degree of safety as control doors or bulkheads. Discussion This regulation gives some operators flexibility in ventilating underground shop facilities. If shop air is to be coursed through the work area, and then directly to the mine return, the question should be asked ? is the quality of air good enough to be reused in the mine, and if so, what are the risks? Can the risks be accommodated and managed to accomplish the change? If so, a considerable increase in mine level airflow could be attained by reusing shop air. Clearly, regulations are a minimum standard, and can be exceeded. Metal non-metal mine regulations are not as specific as coal due to the multitude of different mining methods and conditions utilized. Risks must be thoroughly examined and addressed to assure a safe environment. Issues Determine what contaminants are being produced in the work area ? welding fumes, diesel exhaust, paint fumes, chemicals and solvents, etc. Survey the area and determine exposures. MSHA requires exposure monitoring in 30 CFR 57.5002 (1) of dust, gasses mists and fumes to assure air quality is being met. Perform surveys and examine existing data to quantify personal and area concentrations of contaminants. Often there is adequate circulation such that exposure levels in shop work areas are low. After sending shop air back into the system any contaminants would be further lowered by dilution with other mine intake air downstream. Look at the shop work schedule. If only on day shift, the other two shifts and possibly weekends have no activity or source of contamination to affect the ventilation system. The worst case planning scenario would be a shop fire. Study and simulate how this would affect the mine and shop area. MSHA regulations require an escape route and a fire suppression system be installed and maintained as follows in 30 CFR 57.4671 (1): (d) Automatic fire suppression system and escape route. If used as an alternative, the automatic fire suppression system and alternate escape route shall meet the following requirements: (1) The suppression system shall be? (d)(1)(i) Located in the shop area; (d)(1)(ii) The appropriate size and type for the particular fire hazards involved; and (d)(1)(iii) Inspected at weekly intervals and properly maintained. (2) The escape route shall bypass the shop area so that the route will not be affected by a fire in the shop area. Case Study In an underground room and pillar mine, active mine workings were advancing further away from the mine shaft with deteriorated returns and leakage having a negative effect on ventilation airflows to the face. Mine level airflows were 236 m3/s (500,000 cfm) and shop airflows were 24 m3/s (50,000 cfm) (see Figure 1A). No additional capacity was available at the main surface fan. A solution was to utilize the shop air then send it to the mine areas instead of directly to the return. Considerable information on shop air quality and exposures from many years of operation was examined and no negative data was discovered. A risk analysis determined that moving forward with a shop air reuse program was desirable. A plan was developed, analyzed and decision to proceed approved by mine management. The change was simulated on the computer with the USBM/MTU MFire program before being implemented. This included utilizing fire scenarios to examine potential exposures to inby mining sections and plan escape routes. Increasing pressure from State and Federal agencies to mitigate mining-induced subsidence damage to overlying structures has presented a unique problem to the coal industry in the western United States. Because sandstone escarpments are an environmental issue, millions of tons of coal reserves that underlie these escarpments risk being classified as unminable by regulatory agencies. At this time, the effect of subsidence on escarpments has not been well documented or characterized. The Bureau of Mines is using numerical modeling techniques to analyze escarpment response to longwall mining. Two- and three-dimensional finite element models have been constructed for a study area near Price, Utah, where longwall panels were mined near an escarpment. This status report includes preliminary results showing that the pattern of subsidence surrounding the escarpment can be simulated through numerical modeling. Models that include such structural details as joint and fracture patterns will better simulate subsidence patterns .and magnitude. By locating longwall panels strategically in relation to the escarpment, stability may be preserved throughout the mining process. Numerical modeling provides a method to analyze relatively quickly the effects of longwall panel location and resulting subsidence on escarpment stability. The goal is to provide a relatively accurate predictive tool for mine planning to determine if escarpment stability can be maintained while maximizing extraction of the coal reserves.

"Risk quantification may be used as a sustainable development index in the mining industry, since it encompasses both economic and social factors. In addition, it may assist in the development of a framework, which is also indirectly related to sustainable development, to prevent accidents and improve health and safety standards. However, risk quantification in the mineral sector involves diverse activities and is considered a very difficult task. Although statistical data report accident severity rates, incident rates and accident frequency rates, none of these allow for accurate risk calculations. In this paper, two risk calculation formulas, which may be used to quantify risk, as well as to identify hazardous activities in a workplace, are proposed. Numerical examples are given based on statistical data available through the MSHA database. Also a combination of a decision/fault/event tree that allows risk quantification is presented."

Phosphogypsum is a byproduct of the manufacture phosphoric acid. There are approximately one billion tons of phosphogypsum stored in stacks in northern and central Florida. The Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR) is investigating potential uses of phosphogypsum. These include using phosphogypsum as a road base material, as a soil amendment in agriculture, as a daily cover in landfills, and as a construction material. The results of this research will be presented and will be discussed in light of regulatory barriers to the use of phosphogypsum.

"This article addresses the prevalence of poor public reporting practices of coal exploration results, coal resources and coal reserves in southern Africa. Currently, the reporting of coal tonnage without supporting coal qualities or saleable tonnes and quality is a poor reporting practice that occurs far too often. Not all coal is equal — therefore it is extremely important that investors or potential investors are provided with the full details of both run-of-mine (ROM) and saleable coal tonnage, their associated qualities and other material and relevant information.Competent or qualified persons should note that publicly reported information should be sufficient to enable an informed reader to make a reasonable and balanced assessment of the significance of the information provided. “Companies are encouraged to provide information in their public reports, which is as comprehensive as possible (CRIRSCO, 2013).” However, too often this isn’t the case, and material matters are either not reported or inadequately disclosed.According to the South African National Standard (SANS) 10320:2014 draft document, “tonnage and coal quality that will be available for sale, either in the raw ROM state (raw saleable) at a specified moisture content, or after beneficiation of the ROM coal by processing operations to produce materials at specified qualities, size ranges and moisture contents. The assessments must demonstrate that at the time of reporting, the marketing of the products is reasonably justified. The basis of the predicted practical product yield to achieve the saleable coal reserve must be stated. The moisture basis of reporting shall be stated.” An example as to why coal qualities are so important to the public, the requirements of South Africa’s electric public utility (Eskom) power stations are detailed in the followint paragraphs. The Kendal power station, commissioned in 1988, operates at a calorific value (CV) range of 19 to 20 MJ/ kg, an ash content between 29 and 34 percent and volatiles between 20 to 21 percent. Other power stations, such as Kriel or Hendrina, may require different qualities, such as a CV range of 22 to 23 MJ/kg, an ash content between 20 and 28 percent and volatiles between 22 to 23 percent. Thus, in terms of domestic saleable coal, it is not just about reporting the coal qualities but also informing the investor as to which power station the coal is intended to be sold as “boilers are designed to burn particular qualities of coal” and “it is not always possible to transfer coal between stations because of different quality requirements at each station (Chetty, 2010).” Sulfur content is another important quality with the ideal coal content having a quality of less than 1 percent sulfur."

El Abra is one of the world’s premier copper de-posits. The project is located in northern Chile, 140 km (87 miles) inland from the Pacific coast. It has the same geologic age and structural setting as the world-class Chuquicamata copper mine located 42 km (26 miles) to the south. The current development plan for El Abra extracts798 Mt (879 million st) of high-quality oxide ore. This will require building a solvent extraction/electrowinning(SX/EW) facility that can produce 225 kt/a (248,000stpy) of cathode copper. This will make El Abra the largest SX/EW copper operation in the world, and the world’s seventh-largest copper producer.

The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) District will be extending BART service south along an 8.7-km (5.4-mile) -long corridor in the city of Fremont, California as part of the Warm Springs Extension (WSX). The WSX project will link the existing BART system to the future BART to San Jose extension. A segment of WSX is located in Fremont Central Park (referred to as the Fremont Central Park Subway Project). The Fremont Central Park Subway is considered the most complicated and geotechnically challenging portion of the project with an underground subway box being constructed near the active Hayward Fault which is capable of ground motions up to 0.75 g and is located in an aquifer which is used for water storage and supply. Soil-structure interaction analysis was used in the design of the subway box to resist deformations due to earthquake ground motions. A water-tight excavation support system has been designed to allow subway box construction while minimizing impacts to the aquifer.

Determining the correct combination of mix components and water for high-density paste backfills with the transport and deposition properties necessary in a mining operation is a difficult task. Rheologic properties cannot be determined without conducting full-scale pumping tests, and data from existing tests are very limited. The following presents the findings of investigations undertaken to determine if paste backfill rheology can be determined using existing techniques and which mix and system variables have the greatest influence on transport pressure loss. Data from lab-oratory-scale pumping tests were used to produce a rheologic model of flow behavior for comparison, and a statistical analysis was conducted to determine the most significant factors affecting transport pressure loss.

As part of a strategic research initiative at UBC to design and evaluate integrated underground mining and mineral processing systems, work has been done to determine how to utilize the coarse rejects of pre-concentration in the underground environment. An amenability study for nine orebodies from four of Xstrata Nickel?s Ontario operations evaluated both processing and waste disposal methods. The utilization of the rejects as a high quality backfill with minimal binder requirements has been identified as the preferred disposal method. Fill mixes utilizing the rejects in combination with classified tailings, full tailings, and cement were developed based on the geotechnical properties of the rejects. The mix designs were examined for both strength and rheological properties. The paper will present the results of the pre-concentration testwork, the design and strength testing of various mix designs for rejects from the nine ores and presents a conceptual design for an underground pre-concentration system based on this test work.

A glance at the following chart reveals that because of the continued poor economy, the slump in industrial mineral production continued into 1980. Gypsum was down 17% from 1979; cement down 9%, sand and gravel, 17%, and crushed stone, 11%. All these downward trends reflect the high interest rates and high costs that slowed construction starts. Domestic fluorspar was down 21% and imports off 14% due to the steel iudustry slump. However, potash production was up 8% and phosphate, 5%. Increased drilling activity spurred au increase in barite production of 25%. Most other industrial minerals posted losses with only a few insignificant increases. As expected, prices were higher, reflecting increases due to high costs for labor, supplies, and above all, energy. Increasing energy and transportation costs also had their effect on industrial mineral production. Railroad freight rates increased 16-22% including fuel surcharge; truck rates increased 11-14%a; and ocean freight rates increased 20% for finished goods. The 1979 shortage of boa and hopper cars did not continue into 1980-most likely due to low production of many of the hulk industrial mineral commodities. All in all, 1980 was not a good Year for industrial minerals.

Two examples from underground machinery are Bucyrus’ automated plow systems for the mining of medium and thin coal seams with minimum rock and Bucyrus’ intelligent CST drive system for high-powered armored face conveyors (AFCs) for efficient use of energy."
