The proposed Second Avenue Subway Project in New York City is approximately 8.5 miles long, up to a depth of 120 feet beneath grade and runs the length of the eastern side of the island of Manhattan from Harlem in the north to the financial district in the south. It will reduce overcrowding and delays on the existing parallel line, improving travel for both city and suburban commuters, and upgrading access to mass transit for residents of the East Side of Manhattan. This subway line will have 16 new stations providing transfers to the existing Metro-North commuter rail service and to New York City Transit subway lines and bus services. The first phase of construction includes two TBM rock tunnels 2.4 miles long and two new large and shallow rock cavern stations with clear span openings ranging from 70 to 100 feet and length in excess of 1000 feet with 615 feet center platform, coupled with low rock cover ranging from 20 feet to 40 feet. The design methodology for these large and shallow rock caverns consists of using well known empirical methods for initial estimate of support requirements and then two and three dimensional continuum and discontinuum analyses for verification of the selected excavation sequence and support system. This paper describes the analysis and design methodologies used for the two large and shallow rock caverns with insight into how to overcome the design complexities and construction challenges of the urban underground.

Fan applications in the mining industry have changed during the last 70 years. In 1922, J.R. Robinson authored a technical volume entitled Practical Mine Ventilation. At that time, atmospheric control had only recently shifted from natural to mechanical. The large, mechanical draft fans that were used then were centrifugal. The fans ran at low speeds, about300 rpm. Most were steam-engine driven. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, mines became larger, increasing the pressure and volume requirements of the fan equipment. Axial fans were designed to run at much higher speeds (710 to 880 rpm) and were driven by electric motors. They were also smaller and less expensive to install than the cumbersome centrifugal units. However, changes in mining have resulted in progressively higher static-pressure requirements. So centrifugal fans are once again proving to be a good choice.

"The paper describes in general the objectives, goals as well as theoretical background of "METSI"-project proposal submitted to German BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research). The METSI project is a starting point for technology and know-how transfer of German water management and water treatment technologies to South African Mining industry. "METSI" is Setswana, one of the eleven official languages in South Africa, and means "water". It stands also for "Management System for the Implementation of Environmentally Sound Water Supply Technologies in South African Mining Areas with Involvement of all Relevant Stakeholders". The project focuses on development, design and implementation of mathematical models that consolidate and evaluate existing data and generate substantiated projections of "water" amount and quality. METSI covers a wide range of scientific, technical, social as well as economic questions related to "water in mining"."

Construction for the new 2.5 MGPD raw water intake project commenced December 2002. The project, initially designed as a 12' Ø concrete lined intake shaft,145' deep, with two offset 24" lake taps, 520' and 470' long was subsequently “value engineered” running the two lake taps through a single conduit. The offset for summer and winter pools was accomplished via a second shaft located at the lakes edge. Construction involved the use of blind drilling techniques for the shaft development and drill and blast techniques for the tunneling. All works were completed through extremely hard crystallized sandstone. The project came online August 12, 2004.

The lean, but extensive iron ore deposits of the Dunderland Valley north of Mo i Rana, Norway, is the raw material for the Rana Mines which is a division of the state owned steel mill A/S Norsk Jernverk. Activities for the exploitation of the orebodies were commenced in 1902 by the English Dunderland Iron Ore Company. During its operating period the company constructed a total of two large scale concentrating plants. The activities were strongly marked by technical problems and labor disputes. Thus actual production was limited to the years 1904-1908, 1928-1931 and 1937-1939. During these periods a total of 1.9 million tons of crude ore was mined and 0.6 million tons of concentrates produced for export. The present plant commenced operations in late fall of 1964. Up to and including 1976 about 26.6 million tons of crude have been put through the concentrating plant and about 10.7 million tons of concentrate produced.

A site characterization strategy formulated for the probabilistic design of underground structures is presented, which takes into account the variability of rock properties and the stochastic nature of the rock failure process. It entails determining probability distributions of rock properties by utilizing the theory of extremes and Monte Carlo simulation. Laboratory and field test data are analyzed and presented to illustrate the methodology. The results indicate that the distributive characteristics of rock mass properties can be estimated using empirical relationships currently available. This results of analyses can be incorporated into the design of underground structures, and then, the relative uncertainties of the failure probability of the structures can be assessed.

Face and pillar bursts, bumps and bounces are violent failures that occur in underground coal mines in response to a complicated interplay of face and pillar geometry, seam depth, coal properties and interactions between roof, seam and floor strata. Additional complications arise from the presence of gas, mainly methane, and associated pressure and flow that vary with time and are further influenced by the rate of face advance. Where gas plays a dominant role, the term outburst is often used; where stress concentration is primary, terms such as burst, bump or bounce may be used. Hargraves [1983] presents an often cited review of outburst phenomena with emphasis on Australian conditions. Beamish and Crosdale [1998] indicate outbursts have occurred for over a hundred years and present tabulations of outburst numbers in major coal basins throughout the world. A central consideration is the rate of depressurization that occurs in the course of mining. Outbursts are not limited to coal seams and adjacent strata; they also occur in salt and potash mines [Molinda et al 1988]. Stress concentration and gas pressure act in consort, so the combined action is important to understanding the mechanics of bursts or outbursts and to the development of measures to reduce the associated hazard. Gas flow is a complicated phenomenon associated with diffusion of gas from micro-pores and the flow of gas along cleats. Laboratory measurements indicate both are dependent on stress and pressure [Harpalani and Ouyang 1998]. Moreover, gas permeability in porous media is often many times water permeability [Klinkenberg 1941]. However, there is also evidence that gas and water permeability are similar at elevated stress and follow Darcy?s law [Dabous et al]. Gas flow is also of importance to mine ventilation. Price et al [1973] in cooperation with personnel of the former U.S. Bureau of Mines developed finite difference models to estimate methane emission in mines in the Pocahontas No. 3 and Pittsburg seams using a premining pressure of 4.69 MPa (680 psi) and Darcy's law implying laminar flow. However, the effects of stress were not taken into account. In this regard, mine measurements of permeability are usually based on Darcy?s law [Peide 1990]. Early models of gas flow with stress effects were one-dimensional in space and time (x,t) and were developed with the goal of estimating the gas pressure profile from the face into the seam as time passed [Schlanger and Paterson 1987, Zou and Yu, 1999]. A zone of high permeability adjacent to the mining face was recognized in these early models. Later models based on the popular finite element method allowed two spatial dimensions (x,y) and variation in time (t) and for coal seam heterogeneity [Tang et al, 2002]. Zhu et al [2007] formulated a set of nonlinear equations involving a complicated stress-pressure-permeability relationship for application to coal seam gas flow and concluded the coupling was important but failure of coal should also be considered. Wold et al [2008] used a hybrid finite difference - finite element model interleaved with a reservoir simulation model to study outbursts based on extensive mine and laboratory measurements. An important feature of the modeling was the use of spatially variable material properties and Monte Carlo simulation to obtain quantitative estimates of outburst conditions and probabilities. Connell [2009] used the same reservoir simulation model as Wold but used the popular finite difference code FLAC3D for hydro-mechanical responses to evaluate two permeability relationships, one depending on porosity and the other on stress, and concluded that permeability changes with gas production were more complex than computed by either permeability model. Gadde [2010] in an integrated laboratory and field study of coal pillar strength explored the effect of spatial variability and concluded that design based on average strength was acceptable in some circumstances, although gas pressure was not an issue. Liu et al [2011] also applied a FLAC code to analyze two-dimensional gas flow and deformation of layered but homogeneous strata in a Chinese coal mine using a strain-softening model and concluded that damage and gas pressure were important to strata safety relative to the case without gas.

More than 410,000 visitors from 171 countries helped bauma ’04 set new attendance records at the world’s largest construction machinery and mining technology show. The show, held in Munich, Germany March 29-April 4, marked bauma’s 50th anniversary. At the last bauma show in 2001, attendance was about 406,000 people from 157 countries. At bauma ’04, international attendance increased to 31 percent from 27 percent in 2001. In addition to record-setting attendance, bauma ’04also attracted 2,801 exhibitors, up from 2,341 in 2001. Exhibitors came from the United States, Europe, China, Japan and the Middle East. Exhibitor space topped 500,000m2 (5.4 million sq ft), another record. And, for the first time, there were more foreign exhibitors than German exhibitors, show organizers said.

An evaluation of a nuisance-emissions-discriminating smart mine fire sensor system was made in an operating coal mine. These field evaluations were conducted to determine the sensor system?s ability to discern nuisance emissions, such as diesel exhaust, emissions from flame cutting and welding operations or hydrogen gas from a charging station, from real fires and to compare the number of falsely reported fire alarms generated between the sensor system and a standard carbon monoxide (CO) monitor. The sensor system?s ability to operate successfully in the working environment of an operating coal mine was also evaluated. The smart mine fire sensor system consisted of four sensors whose data outputs were fused with the use of a neural-network-type computer program. Long-term trials were conducted in a haulage way, a belt entry, and a track entry. The system functioned successfully in the belt entry, in accordance with its developmental goals, where the sensor system even discriminated events not anticipated during development. It was not totally effective in the haulage way and track entry, though, due to a combination of significant diurnal air temperature variations, dust, and mechanically induced vibrations. Also, deteriorating rib conditions contributed to operational problems in the haulage way evaluation. In general, the smart mine fire sensor provided nuisance emissions discrimination and was shown to be a viable new approach for mine atmospheric monitoring, enhancing miner safety. This paper describes the in-mine evaluation of the smart mine fire sensor system and discusses recommendations for improving the system. The government of India convened a precedent-setting meeting in New Delhi on Nov. 12, 2001.The meeting brought together regulators and the mining industry in an attempt to fix the industry’s mine development problems in that country. More than 150people attended the all-day session. Ram Vilas Paswan, Minister of Coal and Mines, chaired the meeting. Ravi Shankar Prasad, Minister of State for Coal and Mines, was also present. The secretary of the Department of Mines and the Joint Secretaries and Additional Secretary also participated. The Department of Mines’ mandate is for economic growth: to get new mine development going and to make investment in mining attractive for both domestic and foreign-owned companies.

Many improvements in the art of underground excavation have appeared during the past two decades. These improvements have been both in methods and in machinery and have resulted in more economical construction of today's tunnels. In the realm of machines, the developments of continuous boring heads for either soft ground or rock, random arm excavators and the sliding tunnel floor (Magic Carpet) have each made contributions toward more rapid tunneling. CONTINUITY OF ADVANCE Tunnel boring machines are often referred to as "continuous excavators". Continuous advance (without cyclical interruptions) has not been achieved, however, in any of the machines now in use. In most rotary-head tunnelers the thrust needed to make the cutters bite into the face is obtained from hydraulic cylinders reacting against anchoring devices held stationary by pads which grip against the sides of the tunnel. With this system the forward motion of the cutting head is continuous only until the propelling cylinders have reached their limit of extension. At this point the grippers must be released, moved forward and reset before a new cycle of advance can be begun. Some machines are built to obtain their propelling thrust from hydraulic cylinders pushing backward against newly-installed rings of tunnel support. This is the customary method for propulsion of shields. With it, each cyclical advance or "shove" must await the erection of a new ring of supports. Faster tunnel driving

Open-type, or main beam, tunnel boring machines (TBMs) can achieve impressive rates of production. This type of TBM typically outperforms other types of TBMs currently in use around the world. In good ground conditions, main beam machines have achieved production rates of more than 1 km/month (0.6 miles/month). However, installing effective ground support in poorer rock conditions on main beam machines can be a major cause of concern. The design of main beam machines is such that installation of ground support equipment, particularly at the front of the machine in what is commonly known as the L1 support zone, has traditionally been limited to rock drills and basic working platforms. Personnel working in the L1 zone have, until recently, been protected by roof supports and extended fingers, often with restricted access to working areas.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) East Side Access project (ESA) will, when it is complete, provide a new link to the east side of Manhattan from Long Island, NY that, linked with the Second Ave. Subway currently under construction, will assist in relieving overcrowding at Penn Station as well as the Lexington Ave. subway. ESA will bring Long Island Railroad (LIRR) directly from Long Island into a new station located 37 m (120 ft) beneath the existing Grand Central Terminal (GCT) located in the heart of Manhattan. It will connect the LIRR?s mainline tracks in Queens, via the existing 63rd Street Tunnel under the East River, to a new terminal constructed within, and beneath, the historic Grand Central Terminal.

The prediction and control of ground deformations due to underground mining are important considerations in the permitting, planning, and monitoring of coal mining operations. The prediction of mining-induced ground movements using the influence function method is a mature technology and is widely used in many coal basins around the world. Such movements mainly include subsidence, horizontal displacement, and horizontal and/or ground strain. Predictions can be accomplished using regional subsidence parameters and site-specific data.

Increasing use of pressurized-face tunnel boring machines in North America has produced a similar increase in the application of precast concrete tunnel linings. Where a pressurized TBM is needed, immediate ground support and ground water pressure resistance is also required. A segmental lining installed within the TBM tail shield provides the only available means of providing such a sealed lining. This paper addresses new developments in North America in lining applications and design. For the purposes of this paper, a precast concrete tunnel lining is defined as a tunnel lining constructed using precast concrete segments that are assembled into a lining ring. The lining rings are connected adjacent to each other to form a tunnel lining. Each segment has a sealing gasket around it so that when the lining is completed, it provides a fully waterproof lining system. The ring is erected within the tail shield of the TBM and the annular gap around the ring is filled with grout as the machine moves forward. The ring is not expanded and normally provides the finished lining of the tunnel with no requirement for a second pass lining. The TBM has a series of hydraulic rams that push on the leading edge of the segmental lining to provide the sole system of forward propulsion for the machine. The rings are tapered, being longer on one side than the other. This allows the rings to be installed either on a curve or in a straight line depending on the rotational position of the rings.

INTRODUCTION Perhaps no other area reflects the art as well as the science of mining-engineering design quite as obviously as strata control. This is due to the fact that the design of mining structures is difficult because rock rarely behaves as a homogeneous medium. Further, the original state of stress and the mechanical proper- ties of the in situ rock are somewhat difficult to deter- mine. However, those aspects that are hard to treat mathematically can and have been successfully approached by model studies and in situ measurements. This chapter will review the fundamentals of strata- control design and will provide examples of applications to typical problems. STRESSES AROUND MINE OPENINGS A close examination of Fig. 1 reveals that, prior to mining, stresses exerted in the overburden can be in both the horizontal and vertical directions. In the example problems of Chapter 1, it was shown that the maximum compressive stress (uv) at any depth (D) below the surface can be approximated as follows: [ ] Further, the lateral stress (oh) is related to the maxi- mum compressive stress by utilizing Poisson's ratio (µ): [ ] As soon as a heading is driven, such as the one in the coal seam shown in Fig. 2, the stresses shift to the sides, or abutments, of the opening. Clearly, these compressive stresses around the opening exceed the pre-mining conditions. The problem of designing an underground opening, therefore, is to determine the maximum stresses and to note if they exceed the ultimate strength of the rock. Table 1 lists several rocks with their corresponding strengths. Figs. 3 to 5 depict the boundary stress concentrations around circular, ovaloidal, and rectangular openings. M is the ratio of the horizontal stress to the vertical stress, or as defined above, p/(l-p). This text will concentrate on the state of stress represented by M = 0.33, which corresponds to the condition of no lateral deformation in a rock having a Poisson's ratio of 0.25. For an ovaloid with an opening width-to-height ratio of 2.0 (Fig. 4), the boundary stress concentrations are at their maximum values at the comers of the opening, with values in excess of 3.0. G. Campbell The paper by M. Lonoff looks at the importance of byproduct prices on copper production. The paper develops several interesting points on this topic, but there are some points in the theoretical discussion that could use further development. A couple of these theoretical topics will be considered here using the paper's framework of assumptions without concern about how realistic the assumptions are for the copper industry. Lonoff's theoretical model is based on a static, homogenous world where all copper/byproduct deposits are identical, and these deposits are the main source of these metals. Due to the importance of the byproducts to the production decision, the term coproducts will be substituted for the term byproducts to reflect more accurately this condition. The conclusion is drawn that a rise in coproduct prices necessitates a decrease in copper prices because copper production is increased as a consequence of increased coproduct production. The observation that real world behavior does not always follow this pattern is dismissed as "speculation." However, it can be easily shown that within this simple framework market forces might create the observed behavior. The key question to be answered is what causes coproduct prices to rise. Three possible cases will be used as illustrations. The first case is the one implicity assumed by Lonoff. Here, the demand for coproducts increases at all prices (an outward parallel shift of the demand curve) with the demand for copper remaining constant. As reported in the paper, the results are higher coproduct prices, an increase in coproduct production, and lower copper prices due to the resulting increase in copper production. The second case is when the supply of coproducts are constrained-leading to higher market prices. Copper production, as required by the simple model, is also reduced which Reply by M. Lonoff Campbell's comments give me an opportunity to clarify a few points in "Copper and Its Byproducts." That paper examined the affect of byproducts on the copper market and considered the relative riskiness of multi-metal deposits from an investment standpoint. That brief note made no attempt to be exhaustive. Nevertheless, Campbell's comments miss the point of the paper and necessitate a response. My "theoretical model" was static and I freely conceded after introducing the assumption of identical deposits that "none of the assumptions hold." These simplifying assumptions allowed me to bound the possible effects of higher byproduct prices on the copper price by assuming identical deposits and computing average price effects. I took great pains to subsequently explain that since deposits are not identical the identity of the marginal deposit might change due to byproduct price changes. In this case, average price affects will overstate the affect of byproducts on copper prices. According to Campbell, I dismiss as speculation any "real world behavior that does not always follow this pattern" (of metals prices moving in opposite directions). In the byproducts paper I noted that gold, copper, and silver price movements often parallel each other on an intra-day or day-to-day basis. Such movements are largely due to market anticipation of or reaction to changes in interest rates that affect carrying costs of metals stocks. Other movements may be due to anticipated changes in available supply or physical requirements. I loosely grouped these effects as speculative. To distinguish this statement from the main thrust of the paper, I contined "In the long run if gold and silver prices remain high the equilibrium copper price will be lower." The paper set out long run equilibrium conditions rather than attempting to explain price movements on a daily basis or on a year-to-year basis.

Due to the constant need to improve SAG mill performance and efficiency, extensive research into all aspects of SAG mill optimization has been performed. This paper will review the current evolution of SAG mill shell liner design and their performance at the Copperton Concentrator. The effect of these liner design changes will be discussed with respect to: • Liner configurations • Mill operating performance, i.e., throughput, power draw, mill control • Mill mechanical performance, i.e., liner wear profiles, liner life, liner breakage, liner hardness • Foundry manufacturing considerations • Economic evaluation of throughput versus liner life This paper will discuss the results of Kennecott Utah Copper’s (KUC) and ME International’s (MEI) test work, providing an insight into the past, present and potential future opportunities of SAG mill liner design.

"Within the energy concept of the German government, the operating time of nuclear power plants was initially extended from about 8 to 14 years. It is planned, however, that every power plant will gradually be decommissioned until 2025 and that simultaneously the amount of renewable energies will successively be expanded. According to the political state, nuclear energy is a discontinued model. Looking at the global energy market, though, an obviously opposed development can be observed. At the moment, 443 nuclear power plants are running worldwide and further 62 facilities are being built. These about 500 nuclear power stations have to be supplied with nuclear fuel right now and in the future. The present paper will describe the worldwide use of nuclear energy, the extraction of the nuclear fuel uranium and in detail the available and predicted resources of uranium. The conclusion of the paper is the statement that uranium as nuclear fuel is no scarce resource but sufficiently available."

Several mineral process modeling and simulation packages are currently available for use in evaluating the performance of alternative process flowschemes. A critical link that has been missing from these packages is the ability to quantitatively model the effect of size reduction on the liberation of the valuable and waste minerals in the ore being processed. Although there have been several approaches taken to this problem over the past 25 years, none has led to a satisfactory conclusion. A technique has been developed for measuring the effective liberation characteristics of magnetic taconite ores, and a program has been constructed which makes use of these liberation characteristics in simultaneously simulating both size reduction and mineral liberation as it occurs in tumbling mills. This is an especially important step in the modeling of magnetic taconite processes, where magnetic rejection of low grade wastes between grinding stages mandates that a predictive capability be available. The current application is specific to magnetic taconite, but it is possible that a similar approach could be used for other types of mineral systems.
