Breakage, handling and treatment techniques that result in the placement of greater quantities of coal in fixed volume haulage units such as ships, railroad cars, trucks, mine cars, shuttle cars and scoops can do much to increase productivity by improving bulk density to reduce delivered cost, surprisingly enough, only in steel industry by-product coking has this subject been investigated and applied to practice, where as much as 20% or more productivity has been achieved. Research at UK Mining using popular coal mine loading cycle simulators shows that for typical Central Appalachian mining conditions a 10 to 20 percent gain in bulk density can produce a 15 to 30 percent increase in the loading cycle time of fixed volume shuttle-car/scoop based mining systems.

Agglomeration by balling in cylindrical or shallow pan devices dates back to the early part of this century. The first sintering tests conducted by Dwight-Lloyd on nonferrous ores included a mixing step for ore, flux and fuel carried out in a deep pan device similar to the balling pans, or discs, presently in use. Further work directed mainly toward sintering of ferrous and nonferrous ores always included a preparatory step, usually referred to as mixing, agglomerating or green-balling of the ingredients. In the late forties and early fifties two methods of particle preparation prior to firing were in general use. In Europe the balling pan was used predominantly, both as a mixer and as a pelletizer. In the United States many pilot plants and semi¬commercial plants used balling drums. When the first iron ore pelletizing plants were built in this country, the most frequently used device for green-balling was the cylindrical drum. At the same time, the pan device was used both in Europe and the United States for many other materials such as fertilizer, cement, flyash, alumina and copper concentrates, as well as to mix the feed for sinter machines. The difference between these two balling devices - -the drum and the disc - has been the subject of much discussion and is well covered by several papers included in the 1962 publication "Agglomeration' issued by AIMS, based on their 1961 International Symposium held in Philadelphia. INTRODUCTION Concentration of radon 222Rn and its decay products occuring in the Polish mines of metal-ores call for the necessity of systematic radiation control /Do8la/ both of the working environment and of the miners' personal exposure. The attempts at introducing a system of radiological protection in mines, similar to the ones existing in X-ray or isotope laboratories, took several years and consisted of development of the methods for control of concentration of radon and its progeny in the air, as well as the methods for measuring individual exposure. It was accepted that the assessment of both transient concentration in the air and of personal exposure are basic elements of the control system, which should be implemented independently of each other. Concentration measurement serves to detect and to determine those areas in mines where there is intensive radon emanation, and where current control of the effectiveness of technology introduced to deacrease the concentrations is necessary; personal dosimetry results in the assessment of the actual exposure of miners to radiation. PRINCIPLES OF THE SYSTEM The assessment of working environment is based on concentration measurements of the potential radiation energy of radon alpha decay products. Decentralized assessment is carried out by the special dosimetric service operating in each mine. Dosimetrists are equipped with portable radiometers, type RGR-11, made by the institute of Nuclear Research, Warsaw. The radiometer is presented in Fig. 1. Measurement of filter activity is performed automatically according to Markov's method /Ma62/ or any other method. Simultaneously to potential energy measurement the dosimetrists are measuring the dust concentration in the air and ventilation rate. Ventilation service looks for correlation between those indices and the concentration of radon daughters in the air. Derived Air Concentration /DAC/ for concentration assessment was accepted to be 6.25 10-6 Jm-3 /0.3 WL/ according to ICRP recommendation /Publication No. 24/ /ICRP77/. If environmental measurements reveal potential energy concentration exceeding the value of 0.3 DAC at working places, the miners employed there are subject to individual control of personal exposure. Individual exposure measurement is carried out centrally by the Institute of Occupational Medicine in [Lodz] for all metal-ore mines. Cyprus Gold NZ Ltd will be recovering residual cyanide from their CIT, operation in New Zealand. The process will use air to strip the cyanide from the acidified barren pulp. DSffi. Industrial Development, who were involved in the bench and pilot studies for Cyprus, have extended the concept to pregnant pulp. The stripping of pregnant pulp eliminates the substantial loss of cyanide through carbon catalysed oxidation during the adsorption stage. A 50% increase in cyanide recovery was obtained from an extensive laboratory investigation. The presence of a cyanide recovery circuit enables leaching to be conducted, without detriment, at pHs at least as low as 9, with consequential 50% reductions in the consumption of lime and sulphuric acid. There should be a small reduction in carbon consumption, and a significant improvement in the quality of the final effiuent, at least in terms of cyanide, cyanates, copper, zinc and sulphur. A small but significant increase in gold recovery can be expected too. There is a net economic advantage of NZ$1.20/tonne of ore by stripping pregnant rather than barren pulp.

The influence of the collector structure on the amine (RNH2, R=alkyl) flotation of quartz has been systematically investigated using a modified Hallimond microflotation cell. This study focuses on the effect of varying chain length, branching in the alkyl group R, polyfunctionality of the collector molecule, and alkyl substitution on the nitrogen atom. In addition, adsorption at the solution/air interface and electrokinetic results for the solid/solution interface were employed to further elucidate the role and the interrelation of the structural parameters in the flotation process. Estimates of an electrical double layer attractive energy between the bubble and the solid particle are made.

The flotation behavior of pyrrhotite was investigated by using ethyl xanthate as a collector. Results showed that pyrrhotite had good floatability from pH 2 to pH 11, and poor floatability when pH was >12. The flotation of pyrrhotite was dependent on pulp potential on various pH values. The potential-pH range for pyrrhotite flotation was established. Cyclic voltammeny and FTIR spectroscopic analysis showed that the major adsorption product of ethyl xanthate on pyrrhotite was dixanthogen. The intensity of FTIR signals of dixanthogen adsorption on pyrrhotite and the anode current of a pyrrhotite electrode and flotation response of pyrrhotite are correlated with pulp potentials.

The past 15 years has .seen a dramatic increase in the use of computers in the mining industry. Sanford (1) has provided a comprehensive listing of available programs by application within the mining industry as a whole. Figure 1 below illustrates some of the primary uses and computer techniques currently in application in surface coal mines. As shown in Figure 1, computers have been applied to virtually every facet of surface mine development and operation. In particular, many programs presently exist to significantly reduce the time and effort required during the, planning and design phase of a surface mine. Close examination of the approach taken to utilize existing programs, however, reveals that in most instances applications have been implemented piecemeal with the result that users must be fairly sophisticated in their knowledge of computer applications.

Silver Bell is located about 56 km (35 miles) northwest of Tucson, AZ. It is a classic porphyry copper deposit containing enriched disseminated chalcocite ore in altered porphyritic rocks with chalcopyrite in adjacent skarn zones. The discovery of Silver Bell was an evolutionary process that occurred over a 75-year period. Recorded mining activity began about 1865 on Boot Hill east of El Tiro pit (see Fig. 1) where outcrops of altered limestones were found to contain 425 to 482 g (15 to 17 oz) Ag mixed with copper oxides. By 1874, the Young America Copper Co. was mining shallow occurrences of 30% Cu along the north side of the present Oxide pit. The ore was shipped by wagon to Yuma, AZ, and then by boat to San Francisco for smelting. By 1881, the district supported several mining companies, two small smelters, and was being favorably compared to Bisbee in local newspapers. Most of the ore mined in the period 1865-1903 came from pods of massive sulfide or their oxidized products which were distributed in an unpredictable fashion through a large skarn zone in Paleozoic limestone east of El Tiro pit. Ore grades varied from 5 to 10% Cu.

"In current tunneling practice, finite element simulations have become an integral element of the planning and design process. These models are most often manually generated using 2D CAD drawings, which is a laborious and time consuming process. In this paper, we propose a BIM based approach, in which the 3D FE-model is automatically generated through a set of compatible geometries of individual components, i.e. the geology, alignment, lining and the TBM. The BIM model also includes all relevant model parameters of the tunneling project that can then be incorporated into subsequent analysis to be performed during the tunnel drive. The setup and the execution of the FE-analysis are performed automatically utilizing all required data from BIM. The applicability and efficiency of the proposed strategies is demonstrated by means of project data from the Wehrhahn-line metro project in Düsseldorf, Germany. Both the design as well as the construction stage is considered. INTRODUCTIONIt is recommend to employ Finite Element (FE) simulations in order to ensure a high degree of safety and quality for any given project (Guglielmetti et al. 2012). As such, FE models form an integral part in the design and planning stages of modern tunneling projects. These models are often time consuming to construct and require data from many different sources. This data is most often not centrally stored and therefore not easily accessible. Additionally, the formats in which project data are stored are typically not compatible with the formats required by an FE program. This is especially true in the case of geometrical data, such as CAD drawings. Although existing design drawings are most often used as the basis for a FE model, a direct import into a FE program is most often not successful as the imported data generates a geometry that does not fulfill the requirements of a FEM model, such as model connectivity. Even if a geometry is successfully imported, other necessary aspects of an FE model, such as boundary conditions and material properties, must be applied manually. These incompatibilities inevitably result in the creation of a new model, which, especially in the case of complex 3D models, is a time consuming process."

The Bureau of Reclamation's Syar Tunnel project included excavation of a 9.2 kilometer (5.7 mile) long, 3.6 meter (11.8 ft) diameter tunnel through gently dipping sedimentary rocks consisting of shales, siltstones, sandstones and limestone. The tunnel was supported full length with precast concrete invert segments and lightweight steel sets and lagging. Several world records for advance rate were set, including 57 meters (187 ft) in an eight hour shift and 127 meters (417 ft) in a 24 hour day. The tunneling system utilized a remanufactured and modified Robbins hardrock TBM and a 9,280 meter (30,450 ft) long, 61 centimeter (24 inch) wide, continuous conveyor system.

Competition between Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and non-iron-oxidizing heterotrophic bacteria was induced by the addition of glucose to a co-culture of T. ferrooxidans and A. acidophilum in an oxygen-limited environment. Iron oxidation was inhibited as dissolved oxygen was used preferentially for glucose metabolism. Furthermore, as the water became anoxic, glucose was consumed along with the oxidized iron species (Fe3+) during iron respiration resulting in a pH increase from 2.0 to 4.0. Results suggest that biologically mediated acidification of drainage water can be reversed by dispersion of an easy to degrade, soluble, and inexpensive carbon source such as glucose into the subsurface.

An atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been applied to study the adsorption of potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) and potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) on arsenopyrite surface in solutions. AFM images show that the collectors adsorb on arsenopyrite surface in patches at pH 6. Increasing the chemical dosage will increase the adsorption density of the patches on mineral surface. The increased probe-arsenopyrite adhesion measured in PAX solutions at pH 6 is attributed to the adsorption of the patches, suggesting the hydrophobic nature of the patches, which is likely the oily dixanthogen. It is also found that arsenopyrite is reactive in water in the presence of air. At a high pH with the addition of Ca(OH)2 the adsorption of collectors on arsenopyrite is greatly retarded or depressed because the mineral surface is coated by a lot of precipitates, which is hydrophilic in nature as shown by the measured strong repulsive probe-arsenopyrite detachment force. The findings confirm that the flotation behavior of arsenopyrite in xanthate solutions is very similar to that of pyrite.

Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy or LIBS can be used to provide exploration companies with precise and accurate chemical analyses in the field, in real-time, resulting in major time and cost savings. Using a Field-Portable Analyzer(FPA), anomalies can be followed up immediately while crews are still in the field. Lower limits of detection (LLDs) are element dependent, but many are sufficiently low to be useful in exploration. LLDs in ppm for selected elements of interest are: Be-2, Cu-3, Zn-20, As-200, Sb-500, Pb-30, Ag4,Mo-100, B-33, Ti-500, V-350, and Cr-l. LIBS analyses require little or no sample preparation.

In uranium mines, the median size of the aerosol has been found to be about 0.1 micron or less. Such small aerosols are readily deposited or "plated-out" on dosimeter interior surfaces resulting in the recording of a low dose. The "plate-out" properties of the CEA alpha dosimeter head are described with respect to aerosol properties in controlled experiments in the laboratory. A simple model is derived to estimate the amount of "plate-out" in the CEA head.

For many years the explosives industry was a technological enigma: it was at the 'cutting edge' of some technologies and in the backwaters of others. For example, for at least the past 85 years, the industry routinely measured time to one-millionth of a second for determining the detonation rate of explosives. At the same time, however, formulations were usually hand-written in 'formula books,' such as the alchemists may have done. Also, due to the fact that the equipment had proven to be safe, many of the mixers and packing machines in use until recently were those patented in the 19th century; improving efficiency was not worth the possible risks that might be encountered. In recent years, the wide availability and portability of computers and their adaptation to specialized applications have revolutionized the explosives industry, much as it has many others. With the advent of the water-based emulsions and slurries (water gels), and the necessity to design totally new processing and delivery equipment, the opportunity arose to apply modern techniques to many aspects of the business. Table 1 lists some computer applications currently in use by explosives manufacturers and end users. The use of high-tech production controls, equipment design aids, field measurement devices and other computer applications is so pervasive in the industry today that any brief article such as this must be considered only as a broadbrush overview of the subject.

The objective of this study is to develop a better understanding of the collection characteristics of dust measurement instruments used in mine dust control research with respect to properties of quartz and coal dust. Coal and quartz dust of narrow sues, with aerodynamic median diameters being approximately 2 µm, 4 µm and 10 µm, with quartz contents of l0%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50%, were released in an aerosol characterization chamber using a fluidized bed aerosol generator. Dust was collected in MSA personal gravimetric samplers with l0-mm nylon cyclones, total dust samplers and Sierra 298 inertial cascade impactors. The samples were analyzed for mass and quartz content. A total of 21 experiments were performed for this study. The mass and quartz collection efficiencies of the total and respirable dust samplers and the impactor were determined. The data show that the amount of dust collected by the respirable dust sampler (respirable + oversize dust trapped in the cyclone pre-classifier) was, in general, less than the amount collected by the total dust sampler. The amount of dust collected by the impactor was higher than that collected by the total dust sampler. Quartz analyses of the airborne dust samples showed that the total dust and respirable dust samplers (including oversize dust) collect less quartz dust than at inertial impactor. The larger the median particle sire of the quartz and coal mixture, the lower the quart content of the dust collected in the samplers. For all three sires, the impactor was a better collector of quartz than the other instruments.

Precipitation of a metal from an aqueous solution of its salts by another metal is known as cementation, because the precipitated metal is usually cemented on the added metal. This phenomena was once described by the alchemists as "transmutation," when they dipped a piece of iron in a solution of copper sulfate and the iron was coated with a layer of metallic copper. The process can be predicted in terms of electrode potentials. The metal with the more positive (oxidation) potential, as given in Table 13-1 of the electromotive series, will pass into solution and displace a metal with a less positive potential.

Decision Making (DM) can be defined as a selection process of the best one among the alternatives sets in order to obtain goal, and mostly has an uncertain situation [7]. Every mining engineer is subjected to a number of mining DM problems in daily mining operations. In reality, all stages of mining have its own DM problems. Most of time, engineers do not use scientific methods for DM problems. These problems can mostly be solved by the engineers according to their past experiences and practical studies. Mining engineers often use their intuition in DM process. Experience and intuition have been central to DM because of the frequent lack of quantitative data including geology, grade distribution and ground condition, as well as environmental, social and economic factors [8]. In decision process, linguistic variables become in question and decision makers may not know how these variables are computed [9]. So, the DM process may be qualitative, quantitative or combination of the two. The problem structuring and analysis process is conceptualized in Figure 1 [8]. The qualitative analysis is based primarily on the judgment, knowledge and experience of an expert (or team of experts). In a quantitative analysis, the focus is on facts and the data associated with a problem and a mathematical formulation that encompasses the objectives, variables and constraints of the particular problem. The quantitative analysis has traditionally been the subject of operation research and management science [8].
