In 1985 the Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center (PETC) of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) conducted a study to evaluate the emerging selective agglomeration processes (Killmeyer, 1985). This paper covers a recent similar study evaluating an associated technology, the emerging advanced froth flotation processes. This study has goals similar to those of the 1985 study: to evaluate the emerging froth flotation technologies collectively and determine how far they have progressed in their ability to clean ultrafine coal, and to assess the differences among the participants. The major concern again in this study was not the level of development, nor the economics of each individual process but only the current technical performance.

In our comparison of California and Turkish colemanites, we should first place the discussion in context. In order to exclude technical considerations, which are not germane to this paper, we must make the manifest and basic observation that if colemanite were not acceptable for the production of glass products it would not be used, and we would not be interested in this comparison at all. Suffice it to say that the colemanites, being calcium borates, provide a necessary flux in glass manu¬facture, together with the requisite degree of physical strength and chemical durability which can be achieved only by the use in glass of a. flux substanti¬ally free from alkali; so the sodium borates are automatically excluded from the production of textile fibers. Thus we have today under consideration only California colemanite, Turkish cole mite, and, because it provides a degree of competition to both, ABA, or anhy¬drous boric acid, which, although it is a refined intermediate and of much higher cost, it is also of a much higher degree of purity, and its characteristics can easily be modified to produce a desired end product, so we must include it in any consideration of high quality borates. [Calcim Borate Pentahydrate] Colemanite is a [calcium pentahydrate,] with the formula Ca2B6011.5H20. It has a theoretical B203 content of 50.8%.

This paper considers simulation of truck dispatching systems using maximum expected production of the truck-shovel system as the measure of performance. Two analysis methods are utilized: multiple comparisons with the best (MCB) and the combination of MCB with the variance reduction technique known as common random numbers (CRN). These two techniques are compared via simulation experiments. Results show that the combined procedure of MCB with CRN is the superior tool to use to reduce the total number of replications needed to ensure the specified probability of correct selection from a number of systems. In this case study, MCB with CRN reduced the variance by 29% and the number of required replications by 48%. Also, the MCB with CRN procedure narrowed the confidence interval by 18%.

A numerical analysis and an experiment were done on groundwater flow past a bore hole with a cylindrical obstacle at its center. Flow around the obstacle in the bore hole was studied in detail. Two dimensional governing equations to simulate this flow were written for the hydraulic head and seepage velocity in a porous medium and for the vorticity, stream function, and velocity in the bore hole. These equations were non-dimensionalized and solved by using the alternating direction implicit and successive-over-relaxation finite difference methods. Flow visualization experiments and velocity measurements in the bore hole were done with a two dimensional model composed of a porous medium. The numerical analysis procedures were validated by a comparison of numerical and experimental results. Effects of the Reynolds number and obstacle size on flow in the bore hole are clearly shown in the velocity and streamline profiles. The quantitative relation between the seepage velocity in the porous medium and the velocity of flow around the obstacle in the bore hole also were estimated.

In a 1985 seminar, we were told that overoptimism abounds in Artificial Intelligence (AI), that A1 is neither a science nor a technology yet, and that we will be both exhilarated and disappointed with AI. In fact, even today, there is no single accepted definition of AI; however, certain features have been identified by AI researchers as essential to consider an entity.(e.g: machine or program) to be intelligent. According to Shank (1987), these features include communication (to be able to communicate with), internal knowledge (knowledge about itself), world knowledge (awareness and knowledge about the world outside), intentionality (knowing what one wants and a plan to seek it, ie. goal seeking behavior), and creativity (being adaptable to changing conditions). None of these figures would individually define intelligence; however, each would be a part of intelligence in its own way. The prospects for the development of entities with AI have never been as good as they are now. The combination of advancements in computer hardware and software along with new insights into the ways in which we store knowledge and use it for problem solving has enhanced the potential for the creation of intelligent entities. After some unbounded optimism of a major breakthrough in the fifties and frustrating disappointments in the two following decades, it appears now that AI has emerged from research labs to industrial practice. This is confined by the growing number of repeat applications of AI in business and industry to the extent that AI can now be considered a technology.

Sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) has become an accepted standard in the field of mine ventilation tracer gas studies. It has a wide variety of uses for defining mine ventilation flows that cannot be adequately described using conventional instruments such as anemometers and smoke tubes. The Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratory (CBCRL), Energy, Mines and Resources Canada, has been using SF for the past 4 years and has developed numerous release and sampling systems to increase its versatility. The CBCRL has also completed a successful field trial of an automated rapid sequential SF6 analyzer (which gives a pseudo real-time readout) that can be used underground. In doing this work, the authors recognised the potential of being able to use more than one tracer gas simultaneously in an underground study. Two alternative tracer gases (Freon-13B1 and Freon-12) have already been used by CBCRL in some of their underground work. These gases can be measured by gas chromatography utilising an electron capture detector in a similar manner to SF6. A description of these gases, the methods for 6' their handling, release and sampling are given in this paper together with a brief outline of the analytical system used to measure them. Their suitability to mining applications is compared with SF6. A study in which these three gases were used together is discussed and the results and conclusions given. Some of the additional uses for multiple tracer gases to assist the mine ventilation engineer in resolving problems and improving his day-to-day monitoring are discussed. Finally, a brief analysis of developments which can be expected in the near future is outlined.

Two separate studies investigated the compressive strength of basic igneous rocks and its relation to index properties such as porosity, density and soundrave velocity. The rocks tested were weathered dolerite from S. W. England and vesicular lavas from California. In both cases strength was affected considerably by porosity. In the dolerite, strength was also affected by fissures (microcracks) which were formed in the parent rock by shearing and later accentuated by weathering. While test results show that porosity, density and sound velocity are not reliable indices of rock strength, these properties are useful in interpretation of strength test results. Index testing can be used to classify samples according to similar behavior and to recognize the influence of fissures.

"MOTIVATION Tunnel construction companies must keep costs low, finish projects in less time and still meet the high quality and safety standards. Therefore, their main goal is always to optimize the tunnel excavation process. Traditional geodetical methods are used since more than 100 years to ensure an exact breakthrough of a tunnel. Evolving sensors, sensor fusion and increasing computation resources opened new fields of application for geodetic solutions in tunneling. These solutions offer new ways to reduce costs and risks in tunneling. INTRODUCTION Nowadays in tunneling, geodetical measurement methods are not only used for guidance, but also for various other applications. This paper gives an overview about where geodetical measurements are used today and highlights their benefits for safety and costs aspects. Furthermore, advanced solutions are introduced. In progressive projects, they have already become state of the art technology and are in use daily. STANDARD GEODETICAL MEASUREMENT APPLICATIONS In drill & blast tunnel construction processes, there are many standard geodetical applications used in the different construction phases, each having different requirements regarding accuracy. In the excavation construction stage, guidance tasks and setting-out of various positions is done by the foremen. Thanks to simplified measurement tools, the foremen are enabled to carry out these measurement tasks themselves without requiring deep surveying knowledge. In contrast, deformation analysis and network measurement campaigns need sophisticated planning and a profound education in surveying. Therefore, these tasks are carried out by surveyors. Profile control and as-built documentation is required in each construction phase. Depending on the requirements of the project, this task can be carried out either by the foremen or a specialized surveyor. Table 1 provides an overview over typical surveying tasks in an underground project including information about who is doing the job and the according accuracy requirements. Coal-cleaning operations commonly produce a fine-waste stream containing a considerable amount of coal. The recovery of this coal is normally not economical because the coal is mixed with large amounts of difficult-to remove clay slimes and is often heavily oxidized or contaminated. Conventional froth-flotation machines cannot, in a single flotation stage, produce an acceptable product from such material, and even flotation columns often have difficulty cleaning this type of feed. A new type of flotation column was designed specifically to deal with these problems, and a column of this design was installed and tested in a coal-cleaning plant in Ohio. The feed coal tested was the plant&apos;s tailings-thickener product. The coal was 80% -176 µm and had a heating value of 8401 Btu/ lb. The coal contained 39.8% ash, as fine clay, and 2.83% total sulfur. Because previous attempts at conventional flotation of this type of material had been abandoned, plant personnel believed that the coal was too heavily oxidized and contaminated for flotation to be effective. However, by using the new column it was possible to recover up to 85% of the calorific value in a product containing < 11 % ash, and it was possible to recover 60% of the calorific value in a product containing <8% ash. In addition, the bulk of the pyritic sulfur was also rejected from the coat.

Acidic waters typified by acid mine drainage, copper dump leach solutions and steel pickle liquors will typically contain SO4-2 and cations such as Fe+3, AI+3 and for the pickle liquors, sometimes Cr+3. These acidic waters will often react with limestone, present naturally or introduced for purposes of solution neutralization, to form reaction - inhibiting coatings of gypsum and gelatinous, metal hydroxide precipi¬tates. The coating thickness, as a function of pH, was quantified for both reactive (calcite, limestone) and non-reactive (quartz, barite, fluorite) minerals, and the data were related to the hydroxy species diagrams and to solution turbidity measurements. Coatings were found on the reactive minerals at a lower bulk solution pH than on the non-reactive minerals.

A problem that has continued to plague the Florida phosphate industry is loss of coarse phosphate in the flotation circuit. Attempts to remedy this problem such as floating the coarse material (plus 425 µm) in a separate circuit have resulted in limited success, but recovery is still not optimum. A fundamental examination of the mechanisms involved in the conditioning of the coarse phosphate has led to results that seem to supersede common paradigms. The Bureau of Mines investigated conditioning parameters such as fatty acid/fuel oil dosage, residual clay content in the feed, conditioning time, mixing intensity, and conditioner solids content. The study revealed that the effect of all these parameters was important. However, it was discovered that contrary to common beliefs, the conditioning time affected the grade of the rougher concentrate much more than the recovery. Specifically, the longer the conditioning time, the less quartz that was floated. It was also discovered that high mixing intensity conditioners could lower the conditioning time required for good grade. Many phosphate operators use low intensity drum type conditioners. Optimizing the conditioning time, mixing intensity, and other conditioning parameters resulted in a rougher concentrate grading 30 pct P.2O5, with an attendant recovery of 95 pct.

The technology applied to shaft sinking has lagged far behind other construction activities. While surface oriented construction and mining have made great strides with new processes and equipment, the majority of shafts sunk currently still follow a drill, blast and muck-out cycle developed in the 16th century. Today, in 1979, the shaft sinking industry is in the midst of its own private industrial revolution. Millions of dollars are being spent annually by industry and government alike to spring the art of shaft sinking into the 20th century. The objective of this paper is to review a few of the newest mechanized schemes for shaft sinking. This is not a theoretical review, however, but a practical one, and deals only with hardware and projects which are currently on jobsites. Figure 1 shows the equipment. On the left is the 241SB 184, a 24 foot diameter blind shaft borer. This machine is currently at about 200 feet, constructing a coal mine shaft in Alabama. It is built and utilized in a manner similar to a tunnel borer. In the upper center is the 1211SR, a 12 foot diameter blind shaft reamer. This machine follows a 6 foot pre-drilled blind pilot hole, and is at work in Chicago. On the upper right is the 121BR, a powerful new blind drill. Just below it is the conical drill head for the 121BR which can utilize either carbide or standard disc cutters. At the center bottom is an expandable back reaming head which can be used to enlarge a drilled shaft up to a maximum of 16 feet diameter, or can be used to produce a shaft having several diameter changes. This equipment is also in use in Chicago.

Introduction The usefulness of microscopes in exploration and ore dressing, problems has been documented for the older generation of mining industry personnel in such publications as Schneiderhohn and Ramdohr (1931). A more recent publication that examines the subject is Process Mineralogy, a conference proceedings of The Metallurgical Society (TMS, 1981). However, it is worthwhile to review some of the principles and advantages of microscopic examination of rocks, ores, and mill products. Transmitted light Microscopists can look at materials in transmitted or reflected light. Studying transmitted light is what is usually meant by petrography. In this method, the light passes through the specimen. The upper polarizing filter can be moved in (crossed nicols) or out (open nicols) of the light path. The specimen can be a thin section, a slice of rock mounted on a glass slide and ground to 30 µm (>400 mesh). Or, it can be a sample of rock or ore crushed to about 70 µm (200 mesh). Transmitted light study is particularly suited to gangue minerals, such as quartz, carbonates, and feldspars, and to the study of alteration processes and products. It has some applications to liberation studies. Minerals are identified in transmitted light by observable and measurable optical parameters, such as cleavage and twinning. The Park City District, one of three major mining districts in Utah, is located approximately 20 miles southeast of Salt Lake City on the eastern slope of the Wasatch Mountains. The district has been in near continuous production since 1869. Production has been sustained from exceptionally long bedded replacement ore bodies in the Thaynes, Park City, and Humbug formations and also from several major veins. This paper presents the experimental results of an ongoing investigation into various properties related to the performance and durability of concretes made using existing and new cement replacements. The process of cement and concrete production is investigated focusing on product performance and environmental performance. The overriding factor for the progression of a material will be product performance however; each material selected will have many intrinsic environmental benefits. The study combines Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) with each cement replacement candidate using the most common replacement percentages, 10, 20, 25, 30 and 50 percent. A 35N/mm2 concrete is then prepared and analysed in the fresh and hardened state. In addition, a chemical and physical analysis of each replacement material has been performed and results compared to the control samples containing OPC only and Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) as a replacement. The results show that in their present form the replacements used in this research do not compare with the strengths achieved by the controls. The right balance of chemical composition and particle grading needs to be achieved to produce a realistic replacement material. The processes required to achieve this must strike a balance between monetary and environmental cost.

Service vehicles, often called support vehicles or auxiliary vehicles, are used in secondary functions to support production activities such as loading, drilling, and timbering. Probably the most common support vehicles are the personnel carriers used to move miners to and from work areas. Utility designs are used to transport supplies and various less mobile equipment. Specific application designs are used for special work such as explosives transportation and loading, equipment maintenance, and equipment lubrication. PERSONNEL CARRIERS Personnel carriers are available in a wide variety of sizes and configurations. Some are two-wheel drive, though most are four-wheel drive. Smaller versions carry at least two men and usually have sufficient capacity to carry a small payload of supplies or equip¬ment. The American Motor&apos;s 05 Jeep, equipped with an optional diesel engine, has been adapted successfully for this light duty. Larger personnel carriers with ca¬pacities of 12 to 20 or more men currently are available, as shown in Fig. 1. The designs often are customized to the operating characteristics of each mine. All meet the latest federal requirements for rollover protection, emergency brake systems, etc. UTILITY VEHICLES Utility vehicles are adaptable to numerous duties. Probably the most common are ordinary haulers with a flat bed or low-sided box. They are used for hauling supplies and equipment from one point to another. Some occasionally are used for towing and may pull one or more trailers. Fig. 2 shows a typical utility truck. SPECIAL-APPLICATION VEHICLES Special-application vehicles are possibly the most important of all support types since these vehicles di¬rectly support and maintain production equipment. Such vehicles are available in a wide variety of sizes, mechanical functions, and operating specifications. Most versions are four-wheel drive and articulated. Among the more common vehicles are explosive haulers and loaders, mechanic&apos;s trucks, lubrication trucks (Fig. 3), and special carriers. TYPICAL APPLICATIONS Development Utility haulers are essential in trackless operations to bring supplies to advancing headings. Some utility haulers may be dedicated to bringing in steel sets and may be equipped with boom lifts to unload heavy sup¬ports or even place them as required. A rockbolt hauler may have a boom-mounted operator&apos;s basket which can be used for bolt installation or inspection. Various mechanic&apos;s trucks and pipe trucks service the heading to keep power, air, water, and ventilation at the face and to keep face equipment at maximum utilization. Production Production operations require a variety of support equipment. Because of the larger crew size brought about by the addition of the production force, personnel carriers play a greater role. Correspondingly, steel¬support hauling equipment and bolting trucks usually see limited application. PRODUCTION UNITS Capacity Personnel carriers are available to carry almost any number of people desired. Likewise, other types of carriers or haulers can and are built to fit specific re¬quirements. Physical size, capacity, and operating char¬acteristics can be varied to fit any size of opening and operating condition. Generally, articulated models offer greater maneuverability than straight frame-axle steer designs. Most vehicles of this type are lower in power than production units, generally under 74.6 kW (100 hp). Operating performance still compares favorably to that of production equipment, i.e., the support vehicles can travel at equivalent speeds on the various mine gradients. Manpower Auxiliary vehicles should require only a single opera¬tor. Specific application vehicles may require more than one person. For example, ventilation trucks usually require a crew of two where pipe must be installed.

Efficient transport of bulk materials by belt conveyor systems is an important engineering design issue, especially as conveyors become longer and power requirements increase. It is well known within the industry that the parasitic energy loss of a belt conveyor, due to the indentation of the idlers into the belt backing material can be upwards of half the total energy required to drive it on a horizontal flight. Other loss sources includes the rolling resistance of the idlers, belt/roller misalignments, material trampling, frictional and acceleration losses on loading, etc., but energy absorbed by indentation of the belt backing as it passes over each successive idler is the dominant power consuming factor. INDENTATION LOSS MODELS Models to predict the rolling resistance of a cylinder (idler) on a viscoelastic foundation (backing material) have been available for some time. As a contact problem, it is nonlinear (contact length or indentation depth is a dependent on the load and vice versa) in load/deformation response. Rubber backing material is generally assumed to behave as a linear viscoelastic solid, even though it is known that most rubber compounds retain linearity only at very low strains. Because completely general solutions are impossible, practical solutions require simplifying assumptions. Those assumptions relate naturally to two separate pans of any analytical model: I. The deformation model-aspects of the problem relating to the geometry, boundary conditions and kinematics of how the material deforms. 2. The material model-aspects of the problem relating to the material properties, or constitutive relationships, i.e., the stress/strain relationships.

The use of CCD (counter current decantat.io;1) thickeners, or; clarifiers, in the gold mining industry is quite common. Although there are a number of technologies in the industry which utilize these types of tanks, the fundamental requirement is to settle leach tailings and eventually separate gold and silver "values" from the "barren" (no values) solution. The thickener separation process varies depending upon the raw ores found in any specific mine. In mines where rudimentary, rocky ores are most common the settling process is fairly straight-forward and uncomplicated. But, for those mines with complex carbonaceous ores, usually identified by high silting, clay components, the ability to monitor and control the settled materials is quite laborious and costly. The task of monitoring and maintaining control of settled residue in clarifiers and thickeners, of any design, is difficult in any industry, but due to the added desire in the gold mining industry of leaching the values from the liquid slurry, the problem is multiplied. Other common activities taking place in the thickeners are exaggerated internal flow rates, settleable solids activity due to rake movement, and the settling activity generated by flocculents being added to the liquid medium. All of this action within the liquid column causes the continual monitoring of the interfaces within the tank close to impossible.

It has been demonstrated for two totally different silver bearing and cyanide refactory concentrates that the formation of silver jarosite can be prevented through the addition of iodide to the autoclave feed. A molar ratio of r/ Ag+ of no more than 1 was sufficient to raise silver extractions in a subsequent cyanide leach from 4% after autoclaving without iodide addition to 98% for the sulpho-salt concentrate and from 15% to 97% for the pyritic acanthite concentrate. Flowsheet proposals will be discussed to prevent loss of the iodide additive. The use of chloride instead of iodide will also be reviewed.

The only known attapulgite clay deposits of any considerable extent and purity in the United States are roughly bisected by the Georgia. Florida state line between Decatur County, southwest Georgia, and Gadsden County, northwest Florida. Although attapulgite clay occurrences both farther East and South are known and have been mined to some extent in the past, at the present time it can be said that substantially: all of the commercial attapulgite clay mining and pro¬cessing is concentrated in a roughly rectangular area some 25 miles long by 15 miles wide,, in the general region of Attapulgus, Georgia, and of Quincy and Havana, Florida. Within this area are located the clay processing plants of the four major producers as well as most, if not all, of the currently active mining operations. The approximate location of the plants and of some of the open mines are shown in the local area map, Figure No. 1, for the purpose of orientation only.
