The aggregates industry is the largest minerals industry in the United States producing over 2.6 billion metric tons of crushed stone, sand and gravel annually. Approximately 5% of that production is fine material, passing a 75-micron mesh sieve. Of that amount, about 77% is not sold and represents one of the major industry issues. The material accumulates in stockpiles and settling ponds having an operational and economic impact on the site’s bottom line. Many factors cause this material to be produced: from blasting and processing techniques all the way to end use specifications.

Since early 1973, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has been actively engaged in the utilization of coal mine refuse in the design and construction of highway embankments. The Soils and Geological Engineering Division of the Bureau of Materials, Testing and Research has the task of managing the program which includes field investigations, laboratory testing, engineering evaluation, planning, coordination, implementation, construction control, and review of construction performance. The objectives of the utilization program, in removing colliery refuse banks and utilizing the material in construction, are the environmental and aesthetic rehabilitation of those areas in the Anthracite and Bituminous coal fields which have been plagued for such a long time by air and water pollution, and unsightly landscapes; and the economic rehabilitation of those areas occupied by refuse banks by providing usable land which can now be developed as residential, business, or industrial sites.

Use of radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to solve informational needs in isolated and restricted underground mining environments will be reviewed, giving specifications of some past and currently available systems. The advantages and disadvantages of using various frequencies, system configurations, and specific components, including their construction standards and capability, will be discussed. The remaining challenges to more widespread use of RFID systems for personnel and vehicle tracking will be identified, and recommendations concerning operating environment capabilities will be detailed. Finally, the ultimate requirements for maintaining system integrity during and following a coal mine emergency will be discussed.

Since its formation in 2004, the Task Group for the Extension of the Continental Shelf (EMEPC) has been collecting hydrographic, geological and geophysical data to support the extension of the continental shelf beyond 200 NM. In 2008, the EMEPC acquired a 6,000 m rated ROV named "Luso" and has been cooperating with several national and international institutions to increase and improve its operational capabilities to conduct research on deep-sea minerals. The Portuguese continental shelf corresponds to a broad area of the seafloor encompassing different physiographic domains: the mid-Atlantic ridge system, abyssal plains and numerous seamounts. From 2008 to the present, the mid- Atlantic ridge and seamounts have been the most visited sites with the ROV "Luso". Several hydrothermal vent sites are known to occur along the mid-Atlantic ridge to the south of the Azores archipelago and mostly within the Portuguese EEZ. Vent fields were also discovered in the extended continental shelf, namely the Rainbow and the Moytirra sites located to south and to the north of the Azores archipelago, respectively. The most studied seamounts correspond to those forming the Great Meteor chain and the Madeira- Tore rise. All these visited sites are related either with the occurrence of polymetallic sulphides or cobalt rich Fe-Mn crusts and the opportunities to further pursue their exploration will be discussed.

A laboratory investigation was carried out on the characterization and beneficiation of sillimanite ore. Petrographic analysis indicated that the ore consisted of massive elongated sillimanite grains in a matrix of hematite, garnet, feldspar and silica. A procedure for estimating the percentage of sillimanite was developed using float-sink and magnetic-separation techniques. A liberation study was carried out to determine the level of size reduction required to achieve sufficient liberation while ensuring that gravity concentration techniques would be applicable. Laboratory testing was performed on the liberated ore to investigate the applicability of using wide-angle dense-medium cycloning to upgrade this ore. Initially, medium-only tests were carried out using various size distributions of magnetite and ferrosilicon as the dense-medium solids to evaluate the effects of operating conditions on medium segregation. Depending on the medium solids and operating conditions, either positive of negative differentials (difference between the relative densities of the underflow and overflow streams) were obtained. Based on these results, separation tests were performed to process nominal -1.2-mm sillimanite ore. The results indicated that sillimanite concentration could be obtained using a medium relative density that was much lower than would typically be used in a dense-medium cyclone separation.

The dramatic rescue of nine Pennsylvania coal miners trapped nearly 90 m (300 ft) underground for77 hours probably would not have happened without the high technology equipment and improved mine rescue training techniques available today. By now, most everyone has heard the story of the accident that occurred at the Quecreek Mine near Somerset, PA. At about 9 pm on Wednesday, July 24, the miners were drilling coal in the room-and-pillar mine. Their drilling accidentally punched through to the adjacent, abandoned Saxman Mine. Old mine maps of the Saxman Mine led Black Wolf Coal, Quecreek’s owners, to believe they were between 60 to 90 m (200 to 300 m) away from the abandoned mine. Those maps proved to be inaccurate.

The Mineral Processing Plant Design, Practice and Control Conference was held from Oct. 20through 24, 2002, at the Fairmont Hotel, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The conference was attended by nearly 400 of the world’s top mineral-processing specialists, including plant-design engineers, mineral-processing consultants, academics, suppliers and equipment manufacturers. The meeting was sponsored by SME and cosponsored by the Canadian Mineral Processing Division of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM). The conference covered all aspects of mineral-processing design, construction and operation. The meeting included more than 130 technical presentations. Topics included sampling programs, feasibility studies, design criteria, process technologies, construction, start-up operations and shutdowns. To stimulate interaction and discussion throughout the five-day conference, the sessions were presented consecutively. Attendees had the opportunity to attend every session.

Solvay Chemicals Company mines trona in south-central Wyoming and has done so for many years. The mine is one of several in a mid-continent sedimentary basin that hosts the largest trona resource in the world. Trona is an evaporite, a sesquicarbonate that occurs in several seams of varying thicknesses and depths. Trona is processed into soda ash which has a number of industrial uses in the manufacture of glass, detergent, paper and chemicals. Figure 1 shows the location of the Solvay Mine. A ventilation shaft was recently excavated at Solvay Chemical Company’s mine in the trona patch. In fact, a 22 ft (6.7 m) diameter shaft (inside diameter) was bored upwards from the 1500 ft (457 m) level to the surface. The first bored section was 26 ft (7.9 m) in diameter that allowed for a 2 ft (0.6 m) thick concrete liner. This section began at a depth of approximately 1500 ft (457 m). A second bored section was 24 ft, (7.3 m) in diameter that allowed for a 1 ft (0.3 m) thick concrete liner. This section began at a depth of approximately 750 ft (229 m). This shaft is the #5 Shaft. Figure 2 shows the cutter head used to excavate the shaft.

At the heart of the mining process are a number of basic and fundamental tasks whose regular and repeated performance constitute the mining cycle. As will be discussed presently, these tasks are the basic components of the mining system. Section 9, Production Operations, provides the mine designer and engineer with an understanding of these tasks and with sufficient design principles to allow this person to create an efficient mine system. This section is meant to be an introduction and adjunct to subsequent sections that describe specific mining systems. However, sufficient design information is included here for the independent design of mine systems that may not be described elsewhere or for subsequent verification of existing designs. For the purposes of this section, mining subsumes excavation; thus this material applies to any excavation process. Accordingly, this section is written in general enough terms to include both surface and underground mining. It may be used also for civil engineering excavations that often involve the same steps. Obviously, the actual procedures undertaken in any specific mining system will appear to be very different from those taken in any other system. This is certainly true when comparing surface with underground methods. Yet the fundamental principles are often the same. This segment is written to explicate the basics. Wherever appropriate, the section will suggest the differences between the application process to surface or to underground mining.

A questionnaire was sent out to three classes of mines to determine the extent of the heat problem in U.S. and Foreign underground mines. The following list shows the replies received from this questionnaire, however not all the known hot mines in the US replied. A complete listing of the results can be seen in Appendix I. 1) US coal mines - 37 replies 2) US non coal mines - 23 replies 3) Foreign non coal mines - 36 replies. At the present time there are approximately eleven non coal and one coal mine in the US experiencing heat problems which require special efforts to maintain an acceptable working place climate. However since the survey was completed some of them have been placed on standby. The Mine Safety & Health Administration (MSHA) does not have any specific regulations relating to heat stress. Informally the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists guidelines are followed which use wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) with values ranging from 26.7°C to 31.1°C for a moderate workload, and different rest regimes. An MSHA report (Misaqi 1976) recommended that conditions should not exceed 26.1°C WBGT for men and 24.4°C WBGT for women. However, quite recently the organizations involved with planning two of the proposed nuclear waste repositories in the United States, have opted for the criteria of an air cooling power of 300 w/m2, and a WBGT of 27'C respectively.

The combination of high moisture and low heating value has restricted most low-rank coal (LRC) usage worldwide to mine-mouth power generation. Coals from Usibelli Coal Mine and the Beluga coal field have a heating value of approximately 8,000 Btu/lb and 28% moisture. Hydrothermal treatment (at 275 to 352'C) of lump coal from Usibelli Coal Mine and Beluga coal field enhanced the heating value of the coal, on an equilibrium moisture basis, from 8,000 Btu/lb to nearly 12,000 Btu/lb. The product coal with high heating value and 0.2 % S is an environmentally acceptable premium fuel. The Hardgrove grindability index of the coal is greatly improved, further enhancing its value. Increase in hydrothermal drying temperature promotes vesiculation of resinite. Vitrinite reflectance increased to 0.72 and vitrinite was subjected to widespread visiculation resulting in a coke like structure indicative that the material went through the fluid stage.

This paper evaluates the effect of longwall mining on a cluster of unconventional shale gas wells located in a district barrier pillar between a current longwall panel and the future panel north of the barrier pillar. A cluster of 19 unconventional shale gas wells have been drilled and 5 additional gas wells have been proposed in the barrier pillar. The closest gas well is 25.6 m (84 ft) to the current panel tailgate and 26.2 m (86 ft) to the tailgate of the future panel north of the barrier pillar. The rib-to-rib width of the barrier pillar is 57.9 m (190 ft). The distance between the two gas wells across the barrier pillar is 6.1 m (20 ft). The pillars in the current tailgate are on 22.9-m (75-ft) and 32.0-m (105-ft) centers, and the pillars in the tailgate of the panel north of the barrier will be on 22.9-m (75- ft) and 36.6-m (120-ft) centers. The two longwall panels adjacent to the barrier pillar are 475.5-m (1,560-ft) wide. The overburden depth at the shale gas well site is 321.6 m (1,055 ft). The microstructural relationships in dolomitic fluxed taconite pellets were studied. The influence of basicity (in the range 0.75 to 2.1) and firing temperature (to 1340°C) on the grain structure, macrostructure, and mineralogical phase relationships are described. Extensive slag bonding of hematite grains begins at temperatures between 1220 and 1230°C, and results in fundamental changes in grain structure. Successive temperature increases result in little change in grain structure until 1340°C, when extensive coalescence of the hematite grains begins.' Increasing flux additions have little effect on grain structure but greatly influence pore character. The compressive strength decreases with increasing flux addition, increases with increasing firing temperature, and is related to the macrostructure of the pellet. The compositions of the slag phases are represented on the CaO-Fe2O3-SiO2 phase diagram, and the compositional path of slag development is described.

The Cal-Sag Relief Sewer is a 2.6 m (8 ft 6 in.) diameter 9.1 km (5.7 mile) rock tunnel bored in dolomite for the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago. Included in the project are 18 shafts varying in depth free 70 m (230 ft) to 41 m (135 ft). This paper discusses how Healy/Vanessa reduced costs by eliminating conventional hand excavation by hoisting muck from a high production Robbins TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) through small diameter drilled shafts and using a trailing rail-utility backup system.

"INTRODUCTION Project Background The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE)/Port Authority of New York & New Jersey (PANYNJ), as part of their New York and New Jersey Harbor Deepening Project, will dredge this shipping channel to a depth of 16.5 m below mean low water (MLW). By deepening the channel, the new generation of larger, “post-panamax” container ships coming to U.S. waters as a result of the expansion of Panama Canal can be accommodated in local marine terminals, helping to retain the nearly 300,000 jobs and $12 billion in annual wages the PANYNJ provides to the region. The existing siphons are situated at a depth that could be compromised by the planned dredging of the channel (nycedc.com). The purpose of this project is to build a new 1.83 m diameter water main inside a 3.66m diameter tunnel replacing the two existing siphons in order to provide the necessary backup water supply to Staten Island across the Anchorage Channel within the Upper New York Bay from Brooklyn. The proposed tunnel is approximately 2.9 km long and at a depth of at least 26 m below MLW. The project is funded jointly by New York City’s Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) and PANYNJ and is managed by New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC). The contractor of the project is Tully/OHL JV, the designer is CDM/HMM JV, and the CM is LiRo/PB JV. History of New York City’s Soft Ground Tunneling The New York City area has a relatively long history of soft ground tunneling, commencing in the late 19th century. Construction of the first Hudson River tunnel crossings was begun (but not completed) in 1874 for the Hudson & Manhattan Railroad using compressed air supplying a shield. The work continued intermittently until the project finally opened for service in 1907. These 1.72km long tunnels (maximum depths of 29 m) are still in operation and now operated as the PATH Tunnels. They are approximately 5.5m diameter utilizing cast iron segments. The river bed consisted of primarily silt with shallow rock near the New York side. Air “leaks” occurred during the compressed air excavations resulting in some serious “blows” with water and soil entering the tunnel, including one incident with 20 deaths."

Many utility fuel choices 1990-95 defied expectations, with utility decisions and coal market developments ever more closely linked. The Central Appalachian coal boom never occurred; clean-enough coal was developed in the hard-hit Midwest; Colorado-Utah coal surged; Pittsburgh seam production strengthened; utilities embraced Powder River Basin coal; and emission allowance prices collapsed. Competition drove productivity gains, but the future is not a simple repeat. Phase 2 brings fewer viable compliance options. Mega-railroad pricing has become a key risk factor -- will this be countermanded by merging utilities and power market competition? Revenue losses from vintage contracts are problematic. Uncertainty also plagues natural gas, in spite of unanimity across major forecasts, since recent experience has been so heavily influenced by the gas bubble.

INTRODUCTION Kennecott Copper Corp.'s Tintic Div. Burgin mine is a 725 t/d (800 stpd) lead-zinc producer, located in the east Tintic mining district, 5.6 km (3.5 miles) east of Eureka, and 130 km (80 miles) south of Salt Lake City, UT. The Burgin mining complex includes three shafts, shop, dry, and office facilities, and a 454 t/d (500 stpd) flotation concentrator. Production and ser¬vice entry to the mine is through a 4.26-m (14-ft) diam concrete-lined production shaft, and a three-compart¬ment rectangular shaft. A connection with the Apex No. 2 shaft and the Burgin mine provides a second exhaust airway. Bear Creek Mining Co., Kennecott's exploration sub¬sidiary, began exploration of the Burgin mine area in 1957 with the sinking of the 335 m (1100 ft) deep No. 1 shaft. A station was cut at the 320-m (1050-ft) level of the shaft and extensive drifting, diamond drilling, and some winzing and raising confirmed the presence of a major lead-zinc ore body, the main portion of which oc¬curred below a hot saline water table. Surface facilities and the 4.26-m (14-ft) diam concrete-lined production shaft were completed in 1966. Ore production has been steadily increased to 725 t/ d (800 stpd) since 1966. The collar elevation of the No. 2 production shaft is 1731 m (5678 ft) above sea level. The mine's three levels, the 1050, 1200, and 1300 are at elevations of 1414.6, 1356.4, and 1338.1 m (4587, 4450, and 4390 ft), respectively. The approximate elevation of the hot saline water table is 1382.6 m (4536 ft). The earliest production on the east Tintic mining district was from the Eureka Lilly mine in 1909. Later, in 1916, the Tintic Standard mine was discovered, and pro¬duced ores with a gross value of $80,000,000 through 1956. The Eureka Standard mine located 1.6 km (1 mile) southwest of the Burgin mine produced ore worth $12,000,000 from fissures in the Tintic quartzite along the Eureka Standard fault. Ores produced from the east Tintic mining district through 1971 are valued at $151.3 million. The production from the entire Tintic district is approximately $500 million. GEOLOGY The Burgin ore deposit occurs as replacement bodies in limestone, dolomite, and shale. Numerous fault struc¬tures and rock formations make the mine geology com¬plex. The mineralization is strongly associated with sev¬eral major geological features, which include the Ophir formation, consisting of limestone, dolomite, and shale as the favorable host rock, and the structural influence of the east Tintic thrust, the Eureka Standard and sev¬eral other significant faults. Fig. 1 depicts the Burgin 1300 level workings, a generalized configuration of the ore body, and the main geological features. Covering the quartzite, limestone, dolomite, and shale facies enclosing the Burgin ore deposit are 183 to 274 m (600 to 900 ft) of andesite. The Burgin ore consists of massive sulfide and oxide lead-zinc ores with significant silver and cadmium val¬ues. The main ore minerals are galena, cerrusite, and spalerite. Partners In Economic Reform, Inc., established a Polish-American Mine Center in Katowice, Poland, in 1996 to improve working conditions in the minerals industry. The program was based on the experience of mining companies, government, and labor in the United States, and was executed by a Coordinating Committee headed by the Center Director and Polish leaders from industry, State, labor, and academia. The cooperation among all parties has enabled safety and health issues to become part of industry restructuring with impressive initial reductions in coal mine fatalities. Existing work practices and attitudes of labor and management were assessed in coal mines throughout the country. Promotion, Rules, and Job and Task Analysis were identified as the areas requiring the most improvement, and are part of a post-graduate Safety Management program. Demonstration projects included measuring dust levels, using safety glasses, and promoting hazard awareness. Improved labor-management relations increased cooperation allowing for effective transfer of technology. Results can also be applied to improve the working environment of the manufacturing sector also undergoing restructuring.

Minor subsidence damage to the Burgettstown Junior-Senior High School building and grounds near Burgettstown, Washington County, Pennsylvania, prompted an investigation of the site in early 1985 by the Bureau of Abandoned Mine Reclamation of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources. The investigation determined that subsidence over an abandoned coal mine was occurring and that additional damaging subsidence would occur if reclamation measures were not taken. A Pittsburgh Coal Seam Mine which was abandoned in the 1920's underlies the school at a depth of sixty-five (65) feet. This sixty-five foot section is comprised of five (5) feet of unconsolidated overburden and sixty (60) feet of thinly bedded, highly fractured shale. Approximately five and one-half (5-1/2) feet of Pittsburgh Coal was extracted at the school site. A thin shale binder and one (1) to one and one-half (1-1/2) feet of roof coal were left in place. Within the Contractor's Underground Working Area (See Figure 1) approximately thirty (30) percent of the coal was extracted. It appears that the mine was just being developed in the vicinity of the school when it was abandoned for no known reason. Other nearby portions of the mine show extraction approaching sixty-five (65) percent.
