Four different types of fire suppression systems were evaluated in large-scale fire experiments to study the effect of air velocity on their effectiveness in extinguishing conveyor belt fires. The four different types of suppression system were water sprinkler, deluge-type water spray and two different dry chemical fire suppression systems. The large-scale fire tests were conducted with 1.8-m- (72-in.)-wide fire-resistant rubber belt that met the Mine Safety and Health Administration flame resistant requirement specified in Title 30, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 18, section 18.65 (also known as the 2G Flame Test). Each fire suppression system was tested at air velocities of 152 - 168 m (500–550 ft) per minute (mpm) and 411 - 457 mpm (1,350 - 1,500 fpm). Two tests were conducted at both air velocities for each fire suppression system. Both of the water-based fire suppression systems were able to suppress the fire to the point that a miner could extinguish it with a fire extinguisher. However, the amount of water needed to suppress the fire to the point where a miner could walk up to and extinguish any smoldering belting was greater than the current MSHA regulations required. MSHA regulations only require 10 minutes of water supply for a suppression system. In the test setup, neither of these systems would have suppressed the fire had the water been turned off to the system after 10 minutes. The dry chemical suppression systems produced mixed results. Dry chemical suppression system A did not suppress the conveyor belt fire at either air velocity. Dry chemical system B suppressed the fire at 152 mpm (500 fpm) air velocity, but produced mixed results at the higher air velocity. Details are presented on the large-scale fire test setup, arrangement of the fire suppression systems and conclusions regarding the effect of air velocity on fire suppression system design and performance.

Adequate planning for the development, operation, and reclamation of a surface mine requires attention to present and future uses of land, both on the mine site and in the mine vicinity. This paper outlines land use implications of surface mining, and suggests procedures that could link mine planning, mine operation, and reclamation to more general land use concerns. Mining is viewed as a temporary use of land that may irretrievably commit land resources away from some future activities, but may allow other uses, some of which may have been impossible without mining. The paper accepts the premise that surface mining should attempt to minimize environ-mental damage and to maximize future alternative uses of land by appropriate reclamation. I. The Turquoise Ridge gold deposit is located near the Getchell Mine, 72 km (42 miles) northeast of Winnemucca, Nevada. The deposit is owned by First Miss Gold Inc. The host rocks consist of Ordovician and Cambrian age shales and limestones. They have been crosscut by the northeast-trending Turquoise Ridge shear zone and northwest-trending shear zones. Gold mineralization occurs at depths from 427 m (1 400 ft.) to 671 m (2 200 ft.), along the intersection of these structures. Large tonnage, flat-lying deposits occur where folded, favorable beds are intersected by the faults. The carbonate within the beds has been replaced with silica, pyrite and arsenic sulfides.

Investigation of mined land characteristics, evaluation of irrigation systems and evaluations by the mining industry determined that irrigation is a feasible method for aiding the revegetation of coal mined lands in the western arid and semi-arid regions (Sherman, et al. 1980). The various regions studied displayed a commonality of characteristics which enables, independent of the site or region, the recommendation of solid-set irrigation. Irrigation should be supplemental by complimenting natural precipitation and should be implemented on a temporary basis. For germination, the vegetation requires application of small amounts of water in a gentle, frequent, and timely manner. For the establishment phase of growth, moisture should be applied and stored in the soil either through pre-irrigation or deep irrigation.

Technological advances in mine equipment and milling processes have enabled mining companies to exploit ever lower grades of ore. The result has been larger disturbances, greater volumes of waste, a complex web of infrastructure, and an overall trend towards mega-projects that can extend over several square kilometers. This explosive growth in a mining operation’s disturbance footprint provokes an obvious question: What’s it going to cost to reclaim all of this? At face value, this can be an enormous financial liability for a company, but since the timing of reclamation may be years in the future for many operations, these costs can be heavily discounted thereby limiting the burden on the corporate balance sheet. Nonetheless, mining companies are eager to remove these liabilities as quickly as possible, conversely, regulators want assurance reclamation will, in fact, occur. How might one bridge these competing interests? Navigating the practical and financial requirements of a post-closure landscape requires foresight, judgement and assumptions, however, companies who do not adequately plan for these future expenditures when there is no off-setting income stream will likely face some difficult decisions. Simple risk analysis tools and utilizing the time value of money can help bring some clarity to this end-of-mine life phase.

Sampling tests performed at the Paradise Peak Mine compared various blasthole samplers and reverse circulation sampling methods. Statistical analysis of the data indicates that be-low-the-deck bag sampling produced a 24 to 29 percent error when compared to bulk sampling methods. Use of a chip pile wedge sampler reduced error to 17 percent. Reverse circulation sampling upgraded over bulk blasthole sampling by 7 percent for gold and 11 percent for silver. These results indicate that bias sampling conditions exist when small volume bag sampling is employed in production blasthole drilling.

The percentage depletion deduction on Federal Income Tax Returns under the provisions of the 1939 Internal Revenue Code and of Sections 611 to Section 615, inclusive, of the revenue act of 1954, have created innumerable administrative difficulties, and a new interpretation of "gross income from the property" in that the Courts have expanded the ideas of what constitutes "gross income from the property" to a degree unheard of and unthought of prior to the enactment of these two codes. Originally, under the Revenue Acts of 1917, 1918, and 1920 depletion was allowable, based upon mine valuations as of March 1, 1913; if the mine was owned prior to March 1, 1913; upon cost, as of the date of acquisition if purchased subsequent to March 1, 1913; and upon a "discovery" basis if the mine was discovered after March 1, 1913, The "jab" for mine valuations as of March 1, 1913 and for discovery valuations and depletion was not as bad as it has been made out to be. Thousands of valuations and estimates of reserves were made and agreed upon between taxpayers and Internal Revenue Service engineers and as the years went on the answers have been found to be "reasonable." However, human nature being what it is each case was a battle of wits - of a sort - and many resulted in severe differences of opinion and litigation. As tax rates increased the situation was not bettered. I could talk for several hours on this phase of depletion but it is all past now andwould not give any real service or better understanding of the matter.

The effect of anions such as sulfate, chloride and nitrate on the solubility of rare earth element (REE)-bearing phosphates and fluoro-carbonates was examined using relevant thermodynamic data. The study found that these anions have significant influences on the overall dissolution of REEs from various sources in the aqueous media.

The Pyke asbestos deposits were discovered by Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Pty. Ltd., in 1969 during the course of base metal exploration on the South Island of New Zealand. Extensive occurrences of chrysotile asbestos were found associated with the Red Mountain Ultramafics in the headwaters of the Pyke River, and to the north and south along the ultramafic belt for a distance of 70 kilometers. Surface evaluation and drilling by Kennecott in 1970 and 1971 identified numerous small deposits of good grade fibre in the Little Red Hills between the Pyke and Barrier Rivers. Additional drilling and three adits have been completed by other companies since that time. The property is presently held by Lime and Marble, Ltd. Of Nelson, New Zealand, and Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Pty. Ltd. This paper will present the regional and local setting of the asbestos deposits, including the geology and nature of mineralization. In addition, the exploration methods used by Kennecott in the discovery and evaluation of these deposits will be outlined. Subsequent work by other companies will be mentioned, but not described in any detail. This subsequent work did not alter Kennecott's conclusions or produce any serious changes in the interpretation of geology and mineralization. The author acknowledges the contribution of the many employees of Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Pty. Ltd., who have been involved in the project, particularly Ramon Farmer, N. G. Comer, and A. W. McConie, who were responsible for completion of field work and reporting on the project. The responsibility for the conclusions and interpretations of this report are solely that of the author and result from his involvement in discovery of the deposits and management of the exploration program.

Pima Mining Company has recently completed their expansion tripling the plant capacity to 18,000 tons per day and now is in the process off expanding to 30,000 tons per day with completion scheduled for the summer of 1967. This paper briefly discusses the additions to the mining department and support areas with a more detailed report on the complete new crushing plant and additions to the concentrator. The crushing plant includes a 54-inch gyratory crusher, three 7-foot standard and seven 7-foot short head crushers along with necessary screens, feeders, and conveyor belts to produce a minus 1/2-inch rod mill feed. The concentrator consists of ten milling sections, each containing one 10-foot by 16-foot rod and two 10.5-foot by 13-foot ball mills, classification is done with cyclones. Pulp from each section is floated in 50 cells of 66-inch Fagergren flotation machines to produce a rougher concentrate which is cleaned in six stages of Denver cleaners to produce a final concentrate The various mill products are thickened with disposal made in conventional manner. Plant instrumentation is discussed in the paper.

Extraction and processing constitute an important area in the metallurgy of molybdenum. Molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) production is one of the most important stages in molybdenum production. In this study, the effects of different furnace types on MoO3 production were investigated by using molybdenum concentrate as a raw material obtained during the enrichment of copper ores. Preliminary experiments have been made using a chamber type furnace, and a transition to a pilot-scale has been carried out with rotary kiln experiments. The effects of a different time and atmospheric conditions on MoO3 roasting kinetics were investigated by experimental studies conducted in the temperature range of 500–650°C. It was determined that the optimum temperature and time for sulfur (S) removal was 625°C and 180 min in the studies carried out in the rotary kiln, and it was determined that 0.61%S content was reached with an average removal efficiency of 98%. The activation energy in these sets was calculated as 89.519 kJ/mol.

"We investigated experimentally and theoretically the adhesion behavior of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans (At.f6) to different copper sulfides. The adsorption experiment showed cell densities of 10.74 × 106, 8.06 × 106, 3 × 106, 4.24 × 106 and 2.35 × 106 cells/cm2, respectively, on the surfaces of djurleite, bornite, covellite and chalcopyrite. The order was: djurleite > bornite > covellite > chalcopyrite. The results indicate that A. ferrooxidans has high affinity to adhering to the surfaces of djurleite and bornite in the acidic region. But the thermodynamic approach predicts that there will be no attachment of At.f6 to the surfaces of bornite, covellite and chalcopyrite. This discrepancy is due to the inadequate description of electrostatic interactions. The DLVO approach shows attachment of At.f6 to the surfaces of djurleite, bornite and covellite, and repulsion between At.f6 and chalcopyrite. The DLVO approach can explain the differences of the adhesion of At.f6 to different copper sulfides.IntroductionThe bioleaching of low-grade copper sulfides is a developing technology, and has been applied successfully to the extraction of copper from secondary sulfide minerals (Watling, 2006; Pradhan et al., 2008; Akcil and Deveci, 2010). The bioleaching of chalcopyrite is still a major challenge (Bosecker, 1997; Brierley and Brierley, 2001; Ehrlich, 2004). A study conducted at Billiton Process Research showed the following preferential order of sulfide minerals leached by mesophilic cultures: chalcocite > bornite > cubanite > covellite > pyrite > enargite > carrolite >> chalcopyrite (Dew et al., 1999). The bacteria can solubilize the valuable metals from the orebodies by the oxidation of minerals. Bacterial adhesion plays a critical role in the bioleaching processes (Chen et al., 2008; Harneit et al., 2006). Generally, bacterial adhesion can be explained by surface thermodynamics and the extended DLVO theory, in which the adhesion energy between the bacteria and mineral is calculated as a function of the separation distance (Sharma, 1999; Bos et al., 1999; Sharma and Hanumantha Rao, 2002). These methods take into account Lifshitz-van der Waals interactions, electrostatic interactions and acid-base interactions (Busscher et al., 2010). These interactions are very well understood and formulated in mathematical equations. The most important inputs in these calculations are surface energy, surface charge, electron donation and electron acceptance on the bacterial cell surface and mineral."

The high temperature lubricant molybdenite, MoS2, is usually produced by a complex sequence of processes involving mineral dressing of molybdenite concentrates followed by leaching with hydrofluoric acid to remove abrasive impurities such as silica (1). Many attempts have been made, mostly by techniques involving, direct fusion of molybdenum compounds with sulphur, to produce synthetic molybdenite. However, apart from some experiments of geochemical interest (2) in which aqueous solutions of sodium sulphomolybdate, Nat MoS4, were decomposed under pressure at temperatures between 300°C and 700°C, no attempts to produce the mineral by hydrometallurgical procedures have been reported. Since molybdenite is nominally a compound of tetravalent molybdenum with sulphur, and the most common state of molybdenum is +6, production of molybdenite is likely to involve reduction and sulphidization. Lamco Joint Venture is operating a Dravo Pelletizing machine to produce pellets from the natural slimes of an earthy hematite ore. The grate area of the machine 3.3 x 106 m equal to 350 m2 (3800 sq. ft.) and the installed fan capacity is 8200 HP. The limiting factor for production is normally fan capacity. This means that the processing fans can not pull the additional air (i.e the additional calories or BTUs) through the bed which would be required for increased production. A way to increase production without major modifications is to supply the additional calories needed for increase production by adding coal to the pellet feed. After successful laboratory tests following method of coal addition has been chosen and the following results have been obtained. 1. The ground coal is added to the slurry prior to the filters and the rotary dryer. 2. By adding 0.6% coal, an increase of about 15% in production rate has been obtained. 3. No significant changes of metallurgical properties have been observed (i.e. tumbler index, compressive strength, ferrous iron content, reducibility, Linder degradation and swelling). 4. No unexpected operation problems have been experienced. The pellet discharge temperature increases and is the limit for how much production can be increased by coal addition without making plant modifications.

The mobility of gold and silver metals from refractory ores is very low due to free metal ions in their bodies that bind the transportable and free metal molecules or they are encapsulated in minerals such as sulfides, arsenosulfides, carbonaceous, and clayey materials which make it difficult to extract them. As known from the literature, the enrichment of oxide refractory gold, silver ores, Ag, and Au-rich flotation concentrated from sulfur refractory ores can be leached in the chloride-hypochlorite solutions. In this work, the leaching approach was studied to extract silver ions from refractory ores in the presence of hypochlorite media under high pressure. The mineralogical and scanning electron microscopy analysis of the sample indicated that the silver was encapsulated in barite and quartz minerals in fine sizes. In order to obtain the optimum leaching conditions for the silver ore, the effects of several parameters, namely, temperature, leaching time, NaCl and NaOCl concentration, solid ratio, and particle size on the leaching recovery were investigated in detail. The leaching experiments showed that the highest silver recovery of 62.35% was obtained under the following conditions: temperature of 150 °C, oxygen pressure of 1800 kPa, leaching time of 2 h, concentrations of 2 mol/dm3 and 0.4 mol/dm3 for NaCl and NaOCl, respectively, the solid ratio of 30%, and particle size (d80) 15 μm. The results obtained from this study indicated that the enrichment of refractory silver ores to extract the silver encapsulated in barite and quartz minerals could be possible in the chlorite-hypochlorite under high pressure, a relatively shorter leaching time compared to conventional cyanide leaching.

The Combined Sewage Storage Tunnel (CSST) is part of the Ottawa River Action Plan and will greatly reduce the frequency of sewage overflows into the Ottawa River during storms. The project consists of the design and construction of two TBM tunnels running EastWest (EWT) and NorthSouth (NST) along 6.2 km in total, and multiple shafts and support buildings. Contractor Dragados Tomlinson JV (DTJV) was awarded the 169 million CAD construction contract in 2016 and the CSST will be in operation in 2020. Dr. Sauer & Partners (DSP), supported by Intecsa-Inarsa, was responsible for the detailed design of the precast concrete tunnel lining as well as the geotechnical risk management program. This paper addresses TBM selection, critical tunnel sections, geotechnical risk management and rock mass grouting as a geotechnical risk mitigation measure. [According to the Young equation, SG = SL + Coso, the equilibrium contact angle depends on the values of the three interfacial tensions involved. A solute promotes wetting, i. e. a decrease of contact angle if it decreases.LG and/or YSL or if it increases SG. Dewetting, the important step in flotation is, promoted if the solute increases y and/or SL or decreases. Most solutes used for wetting or dewetting are, positively adsorbed at all interfaces involved and consequently according to the Gibbs equation lower the interfacial tensions. Wetting is therefore expected to occur if LG and SL are more affected by the solute than SG. Dewetting on the other, hand demands a greater decrease of SG than that of SL (and of LG). See P. The brecciated dolostone-hosted (Mississippi Valley-type) and associated shale-hosted stratiform Pb-Zn deposits at McArthur River occur adjacent to a major syndepositional fault, the Emu fault. Base-metal zoning, mineral parageneses, and Pb and stable isotope ratios indicate that both types of deposits formed contemporaneously from metalliferous brines that flowed into the host sediments from the Emu fault. Derivation of brines from underlying evaporitic sediments is suggested. Geochemical evidence indicates that the mechanism of ore formation was sulfate-reduction coupled with oxidation of organic matter. The textural relationships of stratiform sulfide mineralization to diagenetic dolomite concretions, chert blebs, volcanic glass shards, and inter-ore breccia beds, indicate that the reactions proceeded diagenetically within about 100 m of the sediment/water interface.

China was once deficient in nickel and almost totally reliant on imports for its domestic needs, supplies mainly coming from Canada since the ending of imports from the U.S.S.R. in early 1960's. However, the discovery of the huge nickel/copper sulphide deposit in Jin Chuan, Gansu Province of northwestern China in late 1950's and its development and construction through the 1960's and 19701s, have much improved China's domestic nickel position. In 1985. China's nickel production has exceeded 27.000 tons, compared with only 7,000 tons in 1977. Today, Jin Chuan Nonferrous Metals Company operates two underground mines and a small open- pit; owns China's largest reserves of nickel and platinum, and the second largest reserves of copper and cobalt; and has become the most important subsidiary of China National Nonferrous Metals Industry Corporation (CNNC) which was established in April 1983. The Jin Chuan nickel-copper mines are located in Jin Chang City, Gansu Province, 1,700 km west of Beijing in the People's Republic of China (Figure 1). It is believed that Jin Chuan mines have the second largest nickel reserves in the world, after Sudbury basin, Canada. The deposits are situated on the north slope of the Longshu Mountains, 50 km north of Jin Chang City, and border on the southmost edge of the Gobi Desert plateau. The deposits were discovered in 1958. The total strike length of mineralized zones was approximately 6.5 km long, which was divided into four mining areas by faults (Figure 2). The Longshu underground mine of No. 1 mining area began development in 1959, with full ore production capacity of 1,000 TPD. The open-pit, also in No. 1 mining area, which was brought into operation in 1966 with ore output of 5,500 TPD, was closed down in 1982. The East Extension of the open-pit was put into operation in 1983; present production capacity is about 2,200 TPD. Nickel production of Jin Chuan mines in recent years, and production capacity of each mining operation, are shown in Tables 1 and 2.
