Current extensions of the European railway network require long TBM drives in the diameter range of 10 m under critical and varying rock conditions. In view of that and in particular for a 7 km long high-speed railway tunnel in Spain to be started in mid-2003 a new design for a hard rock Double Shield TBM has been developed by SELI (Italy) and Jäger (Austria) in collaboration with Mitsubishi (Japan)and Robbins (USA). Due to the new design and operational features that new type of TBM has been named Universal Double Shield TBM with a further extended area of application. Special attention has been given to outstanding torque and thrust capacities combined with the shortest possible length of an innovative shield arrangement, different advance modes in various ground conditions and further developed exploration and treatment facilities.

Every underground coal mine in the United States must deploy and operate a wireless communication and electronic tracking system. This paper addresses the reliability and availability of an installed tracking system and the communications infrastructure that supports it. This paper assumes that the tracking system uses the communication system to perform its operation. A particular interest is the requirements for the systems to operate continuously without failure after a mine disaster for 24 hours, and the requirements in the MINER Act for the tracking systems to be “functional, reliable and calculated to be serviceable” and the communications systems “redundancy.” These requirements imply a certain reliability and availability. This paper describes a quantitative way to assess these systems requirements, using tools that are available to and commonly used by the reliability, maintainability and availability community.

Underground long-range planning and mine design is an iterative process beginning with a specified production level, quality criteria, and geology of the deposit. Given these factors, face equipment is selected, the number of units needed and production per unit are calculated, and the mine infrastructure needs are developed. The scheduling of units then follows, with the design of the various support systems coming next. The support systems needed to maintain production can be grouped as follows: (1) outby haulage of mined material, (2) supply and manpower haulage, (3) ventilation and associated environmental considerations, (4) drainage, fresh water, and related considerations, (5) rock mechanics, and (6) power, supply. Thus, long-range planning may be viewed as a three-tiered structure, with the data on required production, product quality, and geology at the upper level; the development of face production capacity and the scheduling of units sufficient to meet the needs of the first two at the second level; and the development of support operations for the production units at the third level. Changes at any level may affect not only the items on that tier but may also cause a change to the items on the tier above and below. For example, if the rock mechanics data indicate that desired opening sizes will not be stable, then this situation will affect not only the ventilation design but also the production rate and possibly the selection of equipment itself. These, in turn, may affect the scheduling of units and the number of units, ultimately influencing the entire third tier of systems.

"The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), commonly known as Superfund, mandates evaluation of remediation alternative using nine criteria: (1) overall protection of human health and the environment, (2) compliance with ARARs (applicable or relevant and appropriate standards), (3) long-term effectiveness and permanence, (4) reduction of toxicity, mobility or volume, (5) short-term effectiveness, (6) implementability, (7) cost, (8) state acceptance, and (9) community acceptance. Many states have adopted these or similar criteria for remedy selection under state laws. Although not explicitly addressed in the CERCLA criteria, consideration of sustainability can be incorporated into these criteria. This paper explores how sustainability can be evaluated for remedy selection using the CERCLA criteria. INTRODUCTION Sustainability considerations can be incorporated into all phases of site remediation: • Site investigation (remedial investigation). • Remedy selection. • Remedial design. • Remediation construction. • Operations, maintenance, and monitoring. This paper focuses on remedy selection. Many have looked at remedy selection using sustainability criteria. However, CERCLA and corresponding State programs require remedy selection using mandatory criteria. This paper shows how sustainability can be explicitly considered using the mandatory criteria. REVIEW OF CERCLA CRITERIA First, we review the definitions of the CERCLA criteria. We then explore how sustainability criteria can be fit into the CERCLA criteria. Overall Protection of Human Health and the Environment This criterion addresses the degree to which each alternative is protective of human health and the environment, considering both long-term and short-term risks. Overall protectiveness is a ""threshold"" criterion, in that alternatives that do not achieve adequate protection of human health or the environment are eliminated from further consideration. Evaluation of this criterion is derived from the evaluation of the other criteria (e.g., long-term effectiveness and permanence, and short-term effectiveness). It is not an independent criterion, but more a summary of the overall evaluation."

INTRODUCTION Volcanic tuffs on and adjacent to the Nevada Test Site (NTS) are being considered by the Department of Energy (DOE) for the possible geo- logic disposal of high-level radioactive wastes. The Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigations (NNWSI) project was established in 1977 to evaluate such disposal. Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), one of the participants in the NNWSI project, has as one of its responsibilities the development of a rock mechanics program for the Nevada site. SNL conducted three small-diameter heater experiments in welded and nonwelded tuffs in G-Tunnel on the NTS, to investigate the thermal (heat transfer) and hydrothermal (thermal- induced water migration) behavior as part of the rock mechanics program. These two aspects were investigated to increase knowledge about the behavior of tuff so that predictive capabilities are available for use by repository designers, waste-package designers, and performance analysts. Also, knowledge of the behavior of the tuff is invaluable for planning and designing future in situ experiments at Yucca Mountain, the candidate site for the repository. The evaluations of these three experiments is the subject of this paper. Designers, analysts, and experimenters are seeking a better understanding of the behavior of tuffs under the influence of thermal loads expected from radioactive-waste storage, because of two physical features peculiar to tuffs. First, tuffs are inherently porous because of the manner in which they are deposited (Smith, 1960). Tuffs utilized in G-Tunnel testing have porosities ranging from 15 to 46%, which cover the ranges of expected porosities in the target horizon at Yucca Mountain. It has been established that the G-Tunnel tuffs have similar bulk, thermal, and mechanical material properties to those at Yucca Mountain (Zimmerman et al., 1984), thus, G-Tunnel testing can be used to evaluate the effects of porosity on the thermal and mechanical behavior. The second feature is that tuffs above the water table contain pore water that influences the thermal properties of the rock; displacement of the water must be accounted for in repository designs and analyses. For example, G-Tunnel tuffs, located some 600 m above the static water level, have saturations in excess of 60%. Similar percentages are expected at the target horizon in Yucca Mountain (Zimmerman et al., 1984). The presence of and the removal of the pore water affects the thermal behavior of the tuffs, and these three experiments were designed first to determine the phenomenological behavior and then assess influences on predictive capabilities. The focus in this paper is to present the results and evaluations of the experiments as they apply to improving predictive capabilities. The thermal aspects are emphasized by comparing the measured temperatures (in and around heater emplacement holes) with calculations of predicted temperatures using numerical models, so that the effects of significant parameters can be evaluated and integrated into future predictive models. Observation of the hydrothermal aspects is needed to assess the effects of loss of pore water and subsequent migrations on the temperature fields during the heating, and also to define the expected environment in the vicinity of the outer metallic surface around the waste. The metallic boundary can be either the outer shell of the waste package system, which is the main engineered barrier for waste containment, or the borehole liner. A final decision has not been made as yet about the necessity for lining boreholes; thus, the emphasis is on predicting the characteristics of the environment around the outer metallic surface. "Mining makes civilization possible. It also creates socio-environmental liabilities forcing us to ask how much more of this mining can our planet support. It is clear that the future of mining differs from mining in the future. The laws of nature are being compromised by mining. This paper studies the problems at the core of the mining business which need to be addressed. What kind of mining will serve our existence with nature on this planet? What kind of mining perspectives are we able to formulate without having negative effects for future generations? Is mining technologically sustainable? The values of predictions, imagination, and creativity must be integrated to define what mining should be. Those values should be in the technologies necessary to restoring equilibrium of nature (Geomimic) as well as in complete extraction of metals, better utilization of the mineral reserves, and design the usage of metals to recycle. The purpose of this research is to examine many views and perspectives for future generations and to accelerate the pace of innovation of having mining without socio-environmental liabilities by design and by understanding nature. INTRODUCTION The future of mining is being stifled by many antiquated and stagnant attitudes and policies by the industry and society as a whole. The time is now or never for real action and education against these attitudes and to upgrade them to meet the current needs of this planet if we are to survive. Doing this will prove that we understand and respect nature for us and our posterity. It will also show a positive assessment that the mining process can be reversed before the point of no return. And that is to say, only if reversibility is still an option. It may not be anymore but it’s worth a try. We need to use our imagination and engineering know-how to come up with new proposals to change the core of mining. It would entail re-engineering. There is a profound difference between the future of mining and mining in the future. The future of mining is the continuation and persistence of past practices in the industry and expecting new results. Mining in the future requires a paradigm shift for extraction through modern thinking about mining as it pertains nature. The new paradigm for mining in the future would restore equilibrium with nature. Always keep in mind the connection of mining to nature. What is the future of nature? To predict mining in the future we need to use past experiences in mining and our knowledge of modern science and engineering to formulate a prototype that will enhance mining while maintaining equilibrium with nature. Mining and protecting nature are not mutually exclusive. This new prototype has nothing to do with the level of bonding or insurance that the mining industry can legally provide. The goal of this paper is to contribute some new ideas to help transform the mining industry based on the laws of nature and its limitations. Using this new prototype we will develop the following 1. The request to participate on your theme panel was accepted with some reluctance but indeed as an honor. My subject was outlined to cover 'Energy Resources - both nuclear and conventional' as related to your theme 'Minerals - Treasure Trove of the West'. This is indeed quite an order and I hope you will forgive me for concentrating mainly on the nuclear-uranium portion with brief references only to conventional fuels some of which will be covered in detail later in your conference. In regard to Uranium, I am speaking on the fringe of the area containing half the uranium reserves in your country and no doubt to many who are very conversant with knowledge of these resources. Nevertheless since our two countries have been very closely allied in both nuclear developments and uranium supplies I hope an exchange of information may be mutually beneficial. Concentration on the nuclear fuel resources is I hope understandable as nuclear energy is the coming source of power which will augment the rapid demand in the industrialized countries and provides hope for economic power in many of the more underdeveloped countries. The situation regarding conventional fuel resources is more widely known and their expanding future revolves around production cost reductions, research into diversified uses, plus more assurance of imports from countries less effected by international controversies determining export policies.

Electrothermal production of elemental phosphorous (P4) generates substantial amounts of highly toxic phossy water and sludges. Because of their high phosphorous content and lack of reliable processing technology, large tonnages of these hazardous wastes have accumulated from current and past operations. To date, the sludges are stored in ponds or above ground in special containment vessels at various locations around the country. Two samples of electric furnace phosphorous sludge obtained from the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in Muscle Shoals, Alabama and FMC Corporation in Pocatello, Idaho were investigated using physical separation techniques to recover the elemental phosphorous in the sludge and to render the residual material non-hazardous. The techniques tested include sizing, froth flotation and dispersed air oxidation. Flotation and sizing produced concentrates containing 69 -90% P4 with a recovery in the range of 60 -87%. Dispersed air oxidation of the fines and tailing products was effective in removal of an additional 10 -15% of the P4 in the sludge.

INTRODUCTION For many years, in Europe and in North America, pre-formed metallic and concrete segmental linings in tunnels have been used extensively as temporary and permanent ground support systems. In the United Kingdom the use of cast iron as a means of ground support in mining shafts dates from the first decade of the 19th century. Although at that time wood tubbing was extensively employed, cast iron was used in shafts at Wallsend and Percy Main collieries in the North East of England. The original form of cast iron tubbing consisted of cylinders which were lowered bodily into the pit and were built from the bottom up, but subsequently they were subdivided into segments which involved the making of vertical as well as horizontal joints. Principally, the practice of providing immediate pre-formed support developed because of the incompetent state of the surrounding ground and, although this still remains the over-riding consideration nowadays, several other factors are examined before finally deciding what type of lining to use. Other branches of sub-terranean technology such as tunnel thrusting or immersed tubes (both of which involve pre-formed linings) can provide alternative solutions to problems hitherto thought better solved by bored tunnelling methods. However, this paper will confine itself to those linings developed for the more traditional tunnelling methods. Usually the shape of segmentally lined tunnels is circular because this profile is the most suitable for bad ground and many tunnelling machines. This does not always lead to the most economic use of space within the tunnel and horseshoe or elliptical linings are sometimes used in suitable ground. The number of segments

The scope of this experimental work was to study the yttrium extraction and stripping behaviour in a solvent extraction system with mono(2-ethylhexyl)2-ethylhexylphosphonic acid (IONQUEST 801) in a chloride system The study was performed for only one contact between organic and aqueous phases The experiments were carried out according to a factorial design. Due to the statistical analysis and its experimental proof, the optimum conditions for maximum yttrium loading into the organic phase of the extraction stage were 16 minutes for time of contact between phases, 980 rpm of stirring intensity and pH=2.3 for the aqueous phase of the sovent extraction system. The optimized experimental conditions by the statistical approach for the stripping stage were: time of contact between phases equal to 20 minutes, 1050 rpm of stirring intensity and 1.75 M HCI into the stripping aqueous solution.

The expanding volume of maritime coal transportation is intensifying the problems concerning large vessel service, port construction, trans-shipment, and environmental control. The major problem is the shipment of coal. Customary methods for bulk transfer must be improved and new systems developed. Slurry unloading has a key role in the new systems. This report reviews progress in slurry transportation research that has been done in Japan since the 1960s, when large-scale experiments for domestic transportation were done. Experiments on the effects of vibration on the slurry cargo and on reslurrying are focused on.

Introduction One important class of manganiferrous ores is manganiferrous-silver ores. They occur in the oxidized portions of the silver deposits of the western United States. Silver is often associated with manganese oxides, which in some ore deposits are dispersed through calcite, causing the black color of the host rock, known as black calcite. Black calcites can occur in carbonate rocks (0.3 to 50 kg Ag/t) and in volcanic rocks (less than 30 g Ag/t). Silver mineralization associated with manganese oxides and black calcites can occur in veins (Hewett, 1968) or as disseminations (Graybeal, 1981). In the US, silver-bearing manganese veins are located in a broad arc that extends from southern Colorado to southwest New Mexico, southern Arizona, and southeast Califor¬nia (Hewett, 1964). Areas of disseminated silver-manganese mineralization include the Creede and Silver Cliff districts of Colorado and the Tombstone and Hardshell districts of Arizona (Graybeal, 1981). These deposits are also characterized by significant amounts of silver halides - cerargyrite (AgCl), bromargyrite (AgBr), and iodargyrite (AgI). Black calcites are also common in these deposits. Oxidized silver ores containing the higher oxides of manganese are generally refractory to hydrometallurgical methods of treatment. In the past when these ores could not be smelted, they were treated generally by cyanidation at very low efficiency. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) studied the problem of treating silver-manganese ores in the early 1920s (Clevenger and Caron, 1925). It was found that the refractory silver in the original ore was insoluble in all the common solvents for metallic silver and its salts. The conclusion was that to obtain the highest recovery of silver, all the manganese had to be dissolved or the higher oxides of manganese reduced to manganous oxide. More recent results from treating refractory silver¬manganese ores were given by USBM (Scheiner et al., 1973). The silver ores from Candeleria District, NV, and Round Mountain District, CO, were investigated. Electrooxidation experiments recovered only 34% silver with minor amounts of manganese dissolved. Sulfurous acid pretreatment followed by cyanidation revealed that silver extracted was proportional to the amount of SO2 used. A similar approach, using sulfurous acid pretreatment followed by cyanidation, was also proposed by Rhoades et al. (1984). Hazen Research Inc. performed extensive testing on silver and manganese dissolutions from Ag-Mn ores obtained from the Candeleria and Round Mountain ore deposits. The methods examined were direct cyanidation, pretreatment with sulfurous acid followed by cyanidation, malonitrile leach, and leaching with ammonium hydroxide-sodium thiosulfate under slight oxygen pressure. The results were not satisfactory. The importance of the vast reserves of Ag-Mn ores and the lack of an efficient method to recover these metals warranted a search for new technologies. One novel method for extraction of these metals is treatment of Ag-Mn ores with acidified thiourea solutions. Preliminary results of the leaching of silver and manganese from Ag-Mn ores were very encouraging (Pesic, 1984a) ; thus, it was decided to examine the new lixiviant in more detail. Experimental Ore from the Round Mountain District was studied. It was crushed, ground, and dry sieved into monosized fractions in the range of 16 to +400 mesh. The ore composition was about 90 g Ag/t and 3% Mn, depending slightly on size. The leaching experiments were performed in apparatus described elsewhere (Pesic, 1982 and 1984b). All experiments were performed at constant temperature conditions. The leaching residues were analyzed for silver and manganese. Introduction Mechanical classifiers consist of a settling tank with parallel sides and a sloping bottom equipped with a mechanism which continuously agitates the pulp and removes the settled solids. The functions served by mechanical classifiers include the following: (1) allow the particles larger than the desired size to settle in the tank and provide an overflow product with a minimum of oversize particles, (2) produce an overflow product of sufficiently high solids content to meet the requirements of the subsequent processing steps, (3) agitate the pulp and permit separation of the entrapped undersize particles so they can report in the overflow product, and (4) drain and remove the underflow solids from the settling pool. Various types of mechanisms have been used to agitate the pulp and remove the settled solids, which include: (I) endless belt and chain drags, (2) reciprocating rakes, (3) helical flights mounted on a rotating shaft which extends through the settling pool, (4) helical flights inside of a rotating drum which contains the classifier pool, (5) troughed conveyor belts forming the settling pool in the concave curve of the belt closely following the tail pulley, and (6) low-speed impellers agitating the underflow settled in the apex of cone-type mechanical classifiers.23 The principal use of mechanical classifiers has been in closed¬-circuit wet grinding; however, this application has been widely displaced over the past few decades by the hydrocyclone. The hydrocyclone installation, including its feed pump, offers lower capital costs and requires less floor space. Nominally it produces an overflow prod¬uct of higher solids content, compared with a mechanical classifier, for comparable classification size up to 400µm (35 mesh). However, these advantages of the hydrocyclone are being gained at the sacrifice of some of the advantages of the mechanical classifier. The mechanical classifier requires less power and has lower maintenance costs than the hydrocyclone and its feed pump. The underflow product from the mechanical classifier can have a higher solids content and contain less entrapped undersize particles than the comparable product from the hydrocyclone. Consequently, it is capable of operating at a higher classification efficiency. A reduced circulating load24, 25 results under these conditions in a closed-circuit grinding application. Other applications for mechanical classifiers include desliming, dewatering, and washing operations. Sand-slime separation may be achieved using one or more stages of mechanical classifiers. Typical applications would include washing and deslimining of concrete aggre¬gate or sand; glass sand; abrasives; oyster shells; phosphate rock; iron, nickel, and chromium ores; alumina; zeolites; solar salt; and precipitates from chemical processing. As an example for the latter, Bitzer26 recommended the use of mechanical classifiers for countercur¬rent cementation-in-pulp of copper from the leach liquor. Similarly, mechanical classifiers are used in uranium processing27 for separation of the barren sands from the pregnant leach solution. Depending on the particle size and the effectiveness of the sand¬slime separation, the sand product from mechanical classifiers may be drained to solids content approaching 84%. Thus, mechanical classifiers are frequently used as dewatering equipment for various applications, such as: 1) Make a product having suitable solids content for subsequent transport by belt conveyor. 2) Provide a drained product to reduce cost of drying. 3) Provide a drained, washed, heavy sand product for return to the circuit. 4) Recover fine values from dilute plant effluents from coal, sand, phosphate-rock, and iron-ore washing plants and from steel-mill flue¬dust scrubbers. 5) Drain residual reagents of a preceding process stage prior to conditioning with reagents of different characteristics, e.g., cationic¬anionic flotation of phosphate rock, iron ore, etc. Design and Operating Features The proper selection of mechanical classification equipment re¬quires that the properties of the solids and liquid are adequately de¬fined. The following descriptive information regarding the solids is desired: feed rate, chemical and physical composition, density, tem¬perature, size analysis, and desired separation size. For the liquid used, the following data would be needed: feed rate, density, viscosity, pH, and temperature. Settling Area. The pool area required to permit a particle larger than the separation size to settle depends on the density and shape of the particle and on the density and viscosity of the pulp within the classifier pool. These criteria of the solids and pulp determine the settling rate which, in turn, determines the settling area required. Determination of the settling rate by long-tube batch tests can be used to calculate the settling area. A theoretical approach for estimat¬ing the settling area requirements is discussed in Chapter 1, Classifica¬tion Theory. This procedure can be used when neither test data nor empirical data from similar operations are available. Data on settling-area requirements and settling rates have been compiled by the manufacturers of mechanical classifiers. The approxi¬mate settling area required for a particular separation size can be estimated by using the curve shown in Fig. 65. This curve applies for closed-circuit grinding applications. For dilute velocity classification in open circuit, desliming, the length of the overflow weir, W, multiplied by the weir's mean distance from the feed opening, E, is used as the design criterion, instead of the settling area, in sizing the classifier. The area requirements, W X E, for dilute velocity classification can be expressed in terms of volumetric flow, Q, and settling rate, Rs, as follows: W x E = Q/(18.06 Rs) where W and E are feet, Q is gallons per minute, and Rs is inches per second. Overflow Weir. The hydraulic head, and thus the velocity at which the overflow crests the overflow weir, is one of the factors controlling the particle size of classification. Consequently, the length of the overflow weir must be designed to provide the overflow velocity which allows the particles larger than the desired size of classification to settle in the working area of the pool. The study investigates the effectiveness of the canopy air curtain (CAC) in reducing respirable dust exposure for shuttle car and ramcar operators in underground coal mining. Field testing showed that the CAC reduced dust exposure by 11-34% overall and by 57-65% during ramcar loading by the continuous miner. These results demonstrate the CAC’s potential as a significant dust control device.

It is sometimes said that "mines are made, and not found". I rather doubt that the exploration geologist would be overly sympathetic to that statement, and, of course, like most one-liners it is only partly true. As an explorationist who has been involved in building his own company over the last ten years, and by necessity has become a financier, I can appreciate what real grains of truth are in that statement, however. Because technical people are seldom taught financing in their basic training, and because they are usually not involved in it until at quite a senior level in their careers, the whole field often acquires a certain mystique. The engineering professions have too often believed financing is the province of the accountant or financial executive and just as we in the technical world are often too quick to bristle if the latter try to tread on our domain, the opposite can just as easily be true. Unfortunately, this is another example of a compartmentalized individual, and that is one thing the successful financier cannot be.

In December 2013, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) completed the widening of the eastbound tunnel on Interstate 70 (I-70) from two lanes to three. Work on the westbound tunnel began earlier this year and is scheduled for completion in December. The Twin Tunnels project is located in the mountains about 55 km (35 miles) west of Denver. They were bored during the 1960s when I-70 was being built and became the main access to Colorado?s growing number of ski areas and the state?s Western Slope. Throughout the decades following their construction, traffic on I-70 continued to increase and now the tunnels have a major bottleneck. Com-mutes to and from the mountain resorts, particularly on weekends, have become long and slow. Adding a third lane through the tunnels will help alleviate the congestion. Once the eastbound tunnel was completed late last year, CDOT authorized the funding to begin work on the westbound side. That made economic sense, as the equipment used on the eastbound tunnel needed to only be shifted across I-70 to begin work on the westbound side, rather than removing it in December and bringing it back in March when construction began on the westbound tunnel. Work on the westbound tunnel uses essentially the methods that were used on the eastbound tunnel ? removal of the existing concrete lining and using drill-and-blast methods for tunneling widening. The main difference between the two tunnels is that the westbound side requires more blasting on both ends to widen I-70 to three lanes.

In 1997, Central Contra Costa Sanitary District undertook the design of the Martinez East Side Trunk Sewer Improvements Project. Microtunneling was specified for approximately 1,035 meters (3,400 feet) of 600-mm (24-inch)diameter pipeline to be installed through estuarine soil deposits (San Francisco Bay Mud) and alluvium beneath the congested city streets of downtown Martinez, California. Directional drilling was specified for approximately 275 meters (900feet) of 200-mm (8-inch) diameter pipeline in four separate segments to be drilled through bedrock within narrow utility easements between residential properties. This paper presents a case history for the design and construction of themicrotunneling and directional drilling aspects of the project.
