"Managing slurry is a constant challenge for mining operations. Since slurries are not uniform, the challenge is complicated by varying rheology, velocity, temperature and pressure, all of which affect how the slurry moves through the pipeline and how destructive it is to the system it is flowing through. Picking the right equipment from the outset — the right size pipe, the right size pump and the proper valves for the application — allows mines to operate more efficiently. Better valve designs deliver multiple benefits — they can lower the cost of operations, reduce the amount of maintenance and associated downtime required and are better for the environment. Historically, modulating systems have used ball, plug and pinch valves to manage the flow of slurry, but each of these alternatives has limitations. Ball valves require ceramic lining in order to delay wear, and once a ball valve does wear, the entire valve must be replaced. Similarly, plugs in plug valves should be coated to perform in control systems, and whole valves must be swapped out upon wear. Pinch valves are expensive and only require replacement of the sleeve. However, sleeve replacement involves an extremely arduous process in which the valve is completely taken apart.Traditionally, designers have avoided using knife gate valves (KGV) in modulating systems because KGVs have not been able to hold up under the harsh operating conditions. The throttling that is required in some of these processes rapidly fatigues conventional KGVs, rendering them useless and in need of replacement. Fortunately, innovative design changes have the potential to change established views.Breaking new groundRecognizing the need for improved components, Victaulic took on the challenge of designing a valve that could withstand abrasive slurry systems for a much longer period of time. The first step in this process was to talk to miners, maintenance personnel, process engineers and operators in the field about the limitations of current offerings and then determine design specifications for an ideal replacement.Many of the responses to these inquiries were very similar and reflected challenges with current operations; the primary objective was to find a valve that would be lighter and cheaper than the valves currently in use. In theory, a lighter valve would be easier to replace, and since replacements need to be performed frequently, a cheaper valve seemed like the right idea."

Furthermore, it also provides a potential approach to win metals directly from their ores or ore-deposits in-situ by more simplified methods and at a lower cast than the conventional mining-milling-smelting process would do previously. An ore zoning technique developed by Climax geologists during the past forty years has been used to contour drill-hole assay values on cross-sections for fourteen porphyry molybdenum deposits in western North America, including the Climax and Henderson orebodies. Detailed geological studies of these large, complex deposits are essential in determining ore controls, which are the factors most critical to the zoning of MoS2 assays and to conceptualizing geologic models. The technique provides a detailed representation of the size, shape, grade distribution, and geologic continuity of the individual deposits. It demands a disciplined approach and adheres to rigorous rules while maintaining flexibility for adaptation to widely varying geologic conditions. By defining the limits that guide and control manual, computer-assisted conventional, and geostatistical reserve estimates, it exerts a strong geologic influence on the estimation process. A combination of ore zoning and geostatistical analysis of molybdenum deposits produces a significantly more accurate, precise, and defendable geologic reserve estimate than other methods.

Various coal mine robots (CMRs) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are implemented to explore unknown mines for improving the safety and efficiency of mining. It is challenging for CMRs and UAVs to achieve accurate positioning due to the absence of the Global Positioning System (GPS), poor lighting conditions, and similar geometric features in complex mine scenes. LiDAR-based localization and mapping methods are more accurate than others, while long-time running in large-scale scenarios will introduce nonnegligible cumulative errors. This study presents a semantic-aided Li- DAR simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) with loop closure, which leverages the uniqueness of mine intersection structure to establish stable semantic loop closure. Specifically, we propose a semantic intersection descriptor of translation and rotation invariance, which encodes 3D point clouds of the same intersection from different positions and viewpoints into a unified image. By using the semantic descriptor, we can construct a constant loop constraint when the same intersection is revisited from different directions to reduce cumulative drift. We provide experimental validation using large data sets collected in two large underground mines, namely, a simulated Edgar mine deployed in ROS Gazebo and a public underground mine data set provided by ETH. Experimental results show that the proposed method has higher localization accuracy and outperforms the existing LiDAR-based SLAM strategies.

The approach to Risk Management during the procurement of major projects often has a significant outcome on the ultimate successful delivery of a project. The $NZ4.4B Auckland City Rail Link project is the largest and most complex transportation project yet undertaken in New Zealand. Risk management prior and during procurement was undertaken in accordance the ITIG Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works (TCoP) and through the use of an Alliance Geotechnical Baseline report. This paper describes the measures taken during the procurement process to achieve certainty with respect to outcomes and minimise project risks whilst also achieving value for money. This included the use of cloud-based delivery of geotechnical data and 3-D geological models, reducing tendering costs and allowing a focus on risk mitigation measures during the tender rather than data management.

The Çayirhan coal basin is located 124 km (77 miles) west of Ankara,Turkey. With approximately 520 Mt (570 million st) of lignite reserves, the Neogene Çayirhan basin is one of the important coal districts of the central Anatolia region. The Çoraklar formation consists of crossbedded sandstone, channel fill conglomerates, mudstones, carbonaceous shales and volcanoclastic pebblestones, which are fluvial in origin. The lower and upper lignite seams occur, respectively, in the lower and the uppermost parts of the Çoraklar formation. The lignite deposits are in the Çayirhan and Koyunagili portions of the Beypazari Neogene basin. The Çayirhan coalfield consists of lower and upper lignite seams. The lower lignite seam does not outcrop at the surface. Its lateral discontinuity and relatively low sulfur content, plus sedimentologic and stratigraphic features of the associated sediments, indicate a fluvial origin. Thus, the lateral spreading and geometry of the lower lignite deposits were controlled by the channel, flood plain and well drained marshes of a fluvial system. The mining method employed at Çayirhan is the fullymechanized, retreat, working longwall with caving system. Due to ventilation, haulage and tectonic conditions, panel lengths from 0.6 to 1.7km (0.4 to 1.1 miles) are chosen, and 220-m (720ft) face lengths are used. The annual coal production is 2.2 Mt (2.4 million st).

In April 1982, the contracting Companies, ABV of Sweden and Hoyer-Ellefsen of Norway forming the Consorcio Escandinavo Agoyan, signed the contract for the construction of the civil works of the Agoyan Hydroelectric Project, located in Ecuador, South America. The project is located in the Andes mountain region of Ecuador - one of the smaller countries in this part of the world, located on the Pacific Coast. The contract was signed with the Instituto Ecuatoriano de Electrificación (INECEL), a public institution in charge of the development of all major energy producing projects in Ecuador, for a value of approximately US$ 120,000,000. The contract's main elements are - Concrete gravity dam with a total volume of approximately 210,000 cu m. Methane drainage on a mine-wide scale is a relatively new technology to South African coal mines. Shallow seams and apparently low methane contents have been assumed to result in less methane problems than experienced in other countries. The introduction of deeper mines however, has now resulted in methane drainage taking on a higher priority. Methane contents in the region of 12 m3\t have resulted in one colliery introducing drainage as a ventilation support. Although a low seam permeability initially indicated reduced potential for drainage, early borehole flows of 90 m3\m\year have since increased to 450 m3\m\year. Rapid inflow of methane into goafs and sealed areas from seams surrounding the main production seam at another colliery have warranted extensive evaluation of the methane properties of these seams with the projected introduction of predrainage from surface. Methane pressures in excess of 1000 kPa and contents in the region of 10 m3\t again give methane volumes suitable for drainage. Coal seam drainage ahead of mining is becoming more significant and is likely to see an increase in the near future. INTRODUCTION Methane gas is an everpresent hazard associated with underground coal mining. Safe working levels of methane in the mine atmosphere are normally maintained by ventilation practises, ensuring sufficient dilution of the gas. However in some cases the ventilation must be assisted by methane drainage, either from the mined seam, or from adjacent seams and strata, or from goafed areas. South African collieries have practised only limited methane drainage until now. Relatively shallow mining depths, and apparently low in-seam methane contents have been assumed to result in fewer problems with methane than are the normal for other countries. This is now being shown to not necessarily be the situation. Work carried out by the Coal Mining division of COMRO (Cook and Erwee, 1991) indicates South African production coal seams have very similar methane retention properties to those of coals in other countries, with seam gas contents of up to 12 m3/t. This awareness, as well as greater mining depths, and higher degrees of mechanisation, has resulted in higher priority being given to methane emission problems throughout the industry. Increased levels of safety, as well as possible commercial applications, are the main reasons for the interest now being shown in methane drainage. Not only is there possible applications in the present production coalfields, but South Africa has vast areas of coal reserves which are presently non-mineable, now being seen as possible alternative energy sources. Limited methane drainage is practised within the industry, but only on collieries that have identified specific methane problems that can be alleviated by drainage. Historically this has been restricted to surface drainage of longwall goafs, reducing emissions onto the faces. More recently, horizontal in-seam holes have been drilled, until now for bord and pillar sections, but the results are being evaluated for later application to shortwall faces. Adjacent seams pose problems at some sites and vertical and cross measure boreholes are now being considered.

In Switzerland at present, the longest railway tunnels in the world, the Gotthard(57 km) and the Loetschberg base tunnel (34km) are under construction. For thischallenge six high-tech HERRENKNECHT Hard Rock Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM)are applied, which have to excavate approx. 80 km at the Gotthard and 20 km at the Loetschberg Tunnels. The machines being used are of a single Gripper-TBM type, which are equipped with the latest rock support techniques, in order to optimize the quality of the working conditions for the personnel which have direct impact on the quality of the tunnels. The different requirements of the projects based on different speci?cations within the tender documents led to completely different TBM concepts which will be reviewed in detail in this paper.

"Speakers and attendees of the 2016 Cutting Edge Conference could not be faulted for keeping one eye on the presentations taking place at the Hyatt Regency at LAX in Los Angeles, CA on Nov. 7 and 8 and another on the results of the historic election in the United States that took place on Nov 8. While there was certainly interest in the presidential campaign, there was also a great deal of interest in Measure M on the California ballot. Measure M, which passed easily, is a half-cent sales tax increase that will fund the most ambitious transit expansion in Los Angeles County history.In the coming years, the ballot measure will transform a traffic-choked region by funding the construction of nearly a dozen new rail lines with an estimated $120 billion raised in four decades. Among the projects that could come to fruition are a twin-rail tunnels project through the Sepulveda Pass and new connections in the city.During the update on West Coast projects, Bill Hansmire summed things up with a slide asking “How much work is there on the West Coast,” and his answer was “Billions.”From Seattle, WA south to Los Angeles, there is already a lot of work for tunneling and underground construction experts, and Measure M ensures that there will be plenty of work for decades to come.Currently, The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) has three rail projects underway that were funded by Measure R in 2008 — the Regional Connector, the Purple Line subway extension and the Crenshaw/LAX Line that are designed to alleviate the traffic pressure with an eye to more solutions.Measure M is the fourth sales tax increase to fund transportation in L.A. County, bringing the base sales tax rate to 9.25 percent. In some cities, which already levy their own sales tax, the rate would be higher, The Los Angeles Times reported.About 35 percent of the revenue will fund major new transit projects, such as the subway under the Sepulveda Pass, extension of the Gold Line to Claremont, extension of the Crenshaw Line to West Hollywood and acceleration of the Purple Line Subway construction along Wilshire Boulevard to finish in 2024, 10 years earlier than scheduled.About 17 percent would fund a dozen highway improvement projects, such as widening parts of I-5 in the Antelope Valley and southeastern county, adding bus lanes to the Sepulveda Pass section of the 405 freeway and adding truck-only lanes to a section of the 710 freeway."

New York State’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has undertaken the largest transportation project in New York City. The East Side Access Project (ESA) will introduce MTA’s Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) service to the East Side of Manhattan, to a new terminal located beneath the existing, landmark Grand Central Terminal(GCT). Construction of the Manhattan Segment of the project will affect overlying operating facilities of two other MTA entities, Metro-North Railroad (MNR) and New York City Transit (NYCT) and major Midtown Manhattan buildings. The paper describes the evolution of the GCT concept at Manhattan from a shallow alternative proposed by a Major Investment Study (MIS), that would require extensive underpinning of multi-story buildings and have considerable impact on MNR and NYCT operations, to a deep alternative with lesser risk and potential for disruption.

Current over-capacity in coal production provides assured and relatively low-cost supplies to coal importers. At the same time, it is of serious concern to coal producers who invested considerable sums in the expectation that overseas demand would continue to grow rapidly. This paper assesses the reserves available for export, the export facilities, the coal supplies which can be put through them, and the market prospects for the future. It assumes, rightly or wrongly, that there will be no major and prolonged disruptions in supply from any major sources of coal. COAL RESERVES FOR EXPORT Economically recoverable reserves in the non-communist world amount to about 470 billion tonnes. These are sufficient to sustain current production levels of 2 billion tonnes a year for 235 years.

With new mineral deposits found in areas of difficult terrain, and annual production capacity increasing in mines over the last decade, the aerial ropeway is proving to be a viable, economic method of transportation from mine to processing plant. Of the more conventional designs, a bicable ropeway is more suited to difficult country than the simpler monocable. The bicable, however, does have limitations in the difference in levels it can accommodate in one section at a given capacity. This is noticeable where hilly terrain and high capacity imposes a limit on the length of each section. Increasing the number of sections for a relatively short conveying distance tends, in the case of conventional bicable, to unbalance the normally favorable economics of the ropeway. In addition to analyzing hauling rope stresses, other areas have to be considered when looking at high capacity ropeways. Bucket capacity, speed, and the wheel load on track ropes are examples. These and other factors led British Ropeway Engineering Co., of Sevenoaks, Kent, UK, to produce the twin-track system. Using twin track ropes, larger capacity buckets, and, if the height differential warrants, the installation of twin hauling ropes, BRECO produced a ropeway design for areas of hilly terrain and at higher capacities than had been considered suitable for aerial ropeways. Designs have been produced for systems handling 1.5 kt/h (1,650 stph), and the potential exists for expansion to above 2 kt/h (2,200 stph). The arrangement of ropes provides high stability of the cars and is especially suited to areas where high winds occur during normal operation. This development allows the aerial ropeway to be applied economically in difficult areas and at the increasingly high capacities demanded by engineers. Ropeway Transports Limestone to Sudan Cement Plant Maspio Cement Corp. of Atbara, Sudan, will soon use an aerial ropeway to deliver its entire limestone requirement 20 km (12 miles) from quarry to plant. The Atbara plant is located north of Khartoum, near the east bank of the Nile River. The quarry is west of the river, in hills rising from flat desert country. The original transport system was a 24-km (15-mile) railway from the quarry to the west bank and a monocable ropeway that crossed the Nile and continued to the fac¬tory, a distance of about 2.5 km (1.5 miles). Cable bolts are used as a means of rock support around underground excavations in many mines across Canada and around the world. A substantial body of research on cable bolting was conducted at a number of Canadian universities and mines from the mid-1980s through the 1990s. Since then, research into selected areas of cable bolting practice has continued in Canada. The research has focussed on cable bolt instrumentation and on the inclusion of cable bolts in empirical stope design techniques. A review of cable bolting practice is now warranted at many mines. It has been five years since the completion of the previous substantial body of Canadian academic research and the associated advancement in understanding of cable bolt design, implementation and verification practice. Attempts were made at that time to transfer the new design procedures and performance assessment technologies to mine-site personnel. In some cases, this was effective, and ground control personnel continue to improve on their cable bolting practice at each specific mine site. However, at other sites, experienced people have moved on, and the new, less experienced personnel do not have access to the training or technical resources required to improve their understanding of the subject. In other cases, the technology was not transferred effectively to practitioners, with the result that substantial improvements can be made to the cable bolting practice at those mines. Guidelines for auditing cable bolting practice are provided in this paper. The guidelines include a discussion of the objectives of the audit, suggestions for audit procedure and a summary of the possible outcomes of a cable bolt audit. The objectives of an audit might include assessing the reasons for unexpected cable bolt failures, evaluating the quality of the installation procedures, quantifying the efficiency of the cable bolt system and assessing training requirements and procedures. A cable bolt audit should include consideration of all aspects of the cable bolting cycle, including the design, implementation and verification phases of the operation. At the end of the audit, a ranking should be assigned to the components of the cycle. The ranking system can then be used to identify items that require immediate attention, others that could be improved and others that are adequate. Following completion of a cable bolt audit, increased confidence in the support system and its application is generally, found, along with the potential for cost savings in many cases.

Regional characteristics in the coal resource base have resulted in application of different mining methods across Canada. Longwall methods predominate in eastern Canada, whereas open pit, hydraulic and room-and-pillar methods are utilized in the west. Both provincial and federal agencies have regulatory responsibilities and both also share in the development of R&D programs. This paper outlines the scale and scope of the various agencies involved with health and safety R&D in our expanding coal mining industry. Specific R&D activities in ventilation, dust control, explosion hazards, tunnel boring, strata control and truck braking, which form part of the national program, are outlined.

The Coal Creek Preparation Plant is the coal cleaning facility of Mid-Continent Coal and Coke Company. Located three miles west of Redstone, Colorado, and at an elevation of 8,040 feet the preparation plant cleans coal produced at the company's Dutch Creek Mine and L. S. Wood Mine. (See Fig.1.) Current production is at the rate of 2500 tons per day clean coal. Plant capacity is rated 350 TPH raw coal. Reject rates vary with mining conditions from 8% to 25%. Factors which influenced the design of the coal cleaning facility were the characteristics of the coal, the location in a tourist oriented resort area, and the extreme winters of the area. Lack of areas suitable for settling ponds and the necessity of keeping effluent waters out of the fishing streams dictated a closed circuit plant. Severe winter conditions, which last six to seven months out of the year and temperatures which have dropped to 40° F. below zero on occasions demanded that the plant be totally insulated and enclosed indoors.

Most of the production of copper in the United States comes from a few large companies. Often overlooked, however, are the more numerous small mining operations, which collectively produce a significant portion of the nation's copper. The objective of this paper is to describe the operations of a small mining company - Ranchers Exploration and Development Corporation - how it views its place in this industry of giants, how it exploits the advantages offered by its relatively small size, and how it protects itself from the hazards being small introduces. Environment is, of course, a critical factor for such a company because it does not have the resources which help large companies weather periods of financial stress. Ideally, this environment is characterized by a heal thy economy, strong product demand, relatively stable prices , adequate grades and tonnages of ore commensurate with depth and over-burden, ready access to utilities, a dependable labor pool, and suitable technical "know how". When the environment is right, properties which were previously uneconomical to operate attract the attention of companies whose primary interest is a return on investment commensurate with risk over a reasonable period of time. Naturally, the amount of the investment and the duration of operation determines the size of the company which would be interested in such a venture. Such is the case with Ranchers Bluebird Mine at Miami, Arizona - a small property operated by a small company in a favorable economic environment.

The “Functional Performance Equation for Ball Milling” was first presented in 1988. It now has been used successfully in more than a dozen mineral processing plants. This powerful, yet simple tool provides a new level of understanding of closed circuit grinding. It shows how grinding circuit efficiency is in reality comprised of two distinct efficiencies. It demonstrates how circuit production rate is related, collectively, to these two efficiencies, mill energy input, and the grindability of the ore. It links circuit performance to design and operating variables that can be manipulated, and creates an effective strategy for making plant improvements. This paper covers the derivation and industrial validation of this equation. As part of an engineering and management system that also incorporates suitable metrics and process control, other operators can now use this tool to make improvements and to manage the performance of their grinding operations with clarity and confidence.
