Caterpillar introduced 21 new products during Caterpillar Press Days ‘96, held in June at the company’s proving grounds near Tucson, AZ. The event, billed as the largest product introduction ever held by Caterpillar, was attended by press from around the world. Most of the new products were demonstrated at Caterpillar’s Tinaja Hills Training Center in the Sierrita Mountains south of Tucson. Under the scorching Sonora Desert sun, the press was treated to demonstrations of the new equipment. After a display of the equipment’s power and capabilities, the press was given an opportunity to operate the new models and, in some cases, compare them with the old.

A common casualty of modern open pit mine optimization is the assurance that the resulting design is actually achievable. Optimized mine plans that consider value and a bare minimum of precedence constraints do not, in general, translate into practical, operational mine designs that can really be used in the field. Ultimate pits may come to a sharp point at the bottom. Schedules may require taking small parcels of material from many disparate areas of the pit in a single period. And grade control polygons may be ragged, narrow, and not minable with realistic equipment. In this paper all of these problems are addressed by encoding these three fundamental open pit mine optimization problems as maximum satisfiability problems. Maximum satisfiability provides a useful framework for problems that are non-linear and may guarantee the optimality that metaheuristics cannot. INTRODUCTION Open pit mines are large and complicated operations, which require significant initial and ongoing investment. A single mine may employ hundreds or thousands of people and creates substantial benefits for both the surrounding and global communities. Planning an operation of this magnitude requires a lot of effort and cannot be done optimally by hand. Mining engineers today rely on many techniques from operations research to guide decision making, and to maximize the value of the mine. Techniques including linear programming, metaheuristics, and network algorithms are all used to solve different problems throughout mine design and optimization. However, techniques based on Boolean satisfiability, including the optimization extension of maximum satisfiability, have not seen much use in mining despite being used in many other fields including electronics design, scheduling, and artificial intelligence. We claim that maximum satisfiability is a useful and meaningful way of expressing and solving optimization problems in mine planning. However, this technique does not come without challenges; the problem is NP-hard, and modern techniques for solving these problems can struggle with the number of variables and clauses that a typical mining problem requires. Also, some of the constraints that mining must contend with do not fit nicely into the satisfiability paradigm. Despite these challenges, we believe that maximum satisfiability provides a useful framework for considering operational constraints and expressing some problems that other techniques can't easily express. Maximum satisfiability can be solved exactly, yielding the true optimal answer which metaheuristics cannot guarantee. In this paper we show the applicability of maximum satisfiability to mining by specifying three fundamental problems in open pit mine optimization. We show how these fundamental problems can be formulated and how they can be extended within the framework of maximum satisfiability. For the remainder of the paper we first give a brief background on common elements between the three problems and an introduction to satisfiability. Then we tackle the three problems; the Ultimate Pit Problem, the Block Scheduling Problem, and the Grade Control Polygon Problem. In the Ultimate Pit Problem we specifically show how to extend the problem to support a minimum mining width – a coveted result for many mining engineers. We then discuss some of the complexities and shortcomings of this framework and possible research directions.

Formalized technical audits for mining machinery during manufacturing are a fairly new concept to the North American mining industry. Although used extensively elsewhere, especially in Australia, the concept of independent auditing of machinery design and manufacturing has been slow to gain acceptance in the United States and Canada. Simply stated, a technical audit is an independent, third-party review of all or specific portions of machinery design, manufacturing and assembly to verify compliance with purchase specifications and suitability of the machinery for the specified application. If specified correctly, the useful life of different kinds of structural and mechanical components can be extended beyond normally accepted usage. There is no reason why, if properly designed and built for the application, major structural components on mining machinery cannot be made to last for 20 years before being rebuilt. Also, gearing can be made to routinely last for 15 years.

Engelhard Corporation is one of the leading producers of kaolin based products in the world, having acquired the assets of Freeport Kaolin company in 1985. Much of the production technology used in the kaolin industry was pioneered by Engelhard and Freeport, including Ultraflotation for improving product brightness, delamination to produce kaolin platelet products, calcination to produce ANSILEX® high opacity titanium dioxide pigment extender and pipeline slurry operations to economically transport kaolin from the mine to beneficiation facilities. Engelhard traces its roots back to 1870 when the Edgar family discovered kaolin behind their property in Bonhamtown, New Jersey. Today the company produces the broadest line of premium coating pigments with extensive sales throughout the world. The international scope of the company's business has led Engelhard to evaluate kaolin deposits throughout the world as possible grass roots production sites. Most kaolin products are used in the paper industry -- the largest volume end-user 80% of the total market -- as filler and coating pigments. Lower volume specialized applications include fillers and reinforcements for plastics and TiO2 extender pigments for paints and coatings.

Ilmenite concentrates prepared from beach and dune sands of Florida, India, Australia, and other localities deviate to varying degrees from the theoretical composition of pure ilmenite, and generally contain more Ti02 than the formula FeTiO3 would indicate, and some Fe203. This variation in composition is due to different amounts of altered ilmenite in the concentrates.(l) The alteration has been shown to take place by oxidation and leaching of the iron in ilmenite, to yield residual products consisting of amorphous or very finely crystalline titanium dioxide and ferric oxide, Other studies (2) have stressed that ilmenite may alter first to an amorphous titanium-iron oxide, or to an amorphous mixture of titanium and iron oxides, with later alteration to crystalline titanium dioxide. There has been some speculation as to whether alteration of ilmenite is usually caused by weathering or by hydrothermal processes,(3, 4, 5) Three main methods of approach were used to study the mechanism and rate of ilmenite weathering, (1) Etch tests were used to learn the relationship between crystallographic orientation and the rate of chemical attack on ilmenite. (2) Altered ilmenites in New Jersey sands were compared with ilmenite in rocks of the area from which the sands were probably derived, (3) Experiments were carried out to determine at what rate, and by what agents, originally fresh ilmenite could be altered in the laboratory under simulated weathering conditions.

Computer simulation of mine ventilation systems is rapidly becoming an essential tool in mine planning and design. This paper examines the utilization of ventilation simulation techniques to evaluate the number, shape, size and layout of mine entries in a typical coal mining system. Since the mains and sub-mains serve mainly for transportation and ventilation and the ventilation system is critically important to the health and safety of the workers, there exists a great need for optimal designs in this area. Evaluation criteria, could include, among others, minimization of power costs, shaft requirements and leakage. Constraints of this optimization problem include health and safety regulations and production and mine infrastructure requirements.

Barite deposits located in Dinek and surrounding region have important economic features with their large reserve capacity for Turkey. The objective of this study is to elucidate geological and depositional characteristics in terms of. site investigation and chemical analysis. In order to do this, geological area of about 300 km2 was examined and detailed geological map was constructed. It was observed that Barite mineralization in these deposits was occurred in carbonate and pelitic rocks of Lower Cambrian-Lower Ordovician. Deposits were exposed to advanced diagenesis regional metamorphism and tectonics that rotated and deformed the barites; therefore, barites shows secondary veins, brecciate and fracturing structure. Even though, a few light isotope values of barites may suggest hydrothermal and exhalative sedimentary characteristics or possible mixing with magmatic fluids, generally heavy isotope values indicate that the sulfate ions were supplied from coeval seawater and, many of sedimentary features and petrological, geochemical characters support dominantly sedimentary origin.

INTRODUCTION In any large earth-moving operation, good planning and management are necessary to complete the operational tasks promptly and successfully. When an earth moving operation is complicated by radioactive contaminants, normal earth moving techniques and procedures must be modified. Any planning and management, therefore, must include the radiological aspects of the operation. It was found that the radiological aspects dominated most of the planning and management activities and were extended to all facets of the decontamination work at the former Shiprock uranium millsite. These planning aspects are discussed and their use to develop a work plan is described. The management aspects are discussed and their use to establish a management structure are also presented. PLANNING Some method of procedure, formulated beforehand, was necessary to govern the decontamination work at the former Shiprock uranium millsite. This procedure was expressed in the form of a work plan which served several listed purposes. 1. It defined the work to be done and the sequence it would follow. 2. It was used as a yardstick to measure progress. 3. It was used to assign organizational responsibilities. Several factors were considered to aid in the development of the plan. These factors are discussed below: Goals It was established that radiation exposure was occurring to persons working at the millsite, and in an around the community of Shiprock, from airborne radioactive mill wastes and radon-222 exhaling from the tailings piles. The goal set for the decontamination work was to reduce on-site exposures to levels acceptable for the millsite occupants. The attainment of this goal would also have a substantial impact in reducing off-site exposures. The objectives necessary to achieve the goal were consolidation and containment of the wastes. The former objective implies decontamination of the millsite and environs, and the later implies stabilization of the wastes. In practice, a total and complete decontamination of the millsite and contaminated environs would be very difficult and costly. The costs for decontaminating them could be high enough that an alternative method might be more cost-effective for reducing human exposures (i.e, move the affected people away from the source). The interim guide "Radiological Criteria for the Decontamination of Inactive Uranium Millsites" was used for the decontamination criteria (EPA 74). Briefly, the criteria state that off-pile decontamination should be effective enough to reduce the net above ground exposure rate to less than 10 [u]R/hr for unrestricted use of the affected area. When decontamination cannot readily be achieved, the exposure rate levels could be relaxed to 40 [u]R/hr; however, the affected area has to be restricted. The second objective, waste containment, means isolating the wastes from the biosphere. Since no method of containment was available at the beginning of the millsite decontamination effort, temporary containment (interim stabilzation) became the objective. The tailings pile and decontamination wastes would be covered with clean fill. The interim stabilization should last from 5 to 10 years until the final disposition of the wastes will occur. The goal, therefore, would be achieved by decontaminating the off-pile areas to less than 10 uR/hr where practical. The decontamination wastes would be used to plate the surface of the tailings pile and would be covered with clean fill. Radiological Survey The radiologial survey is the key factor for planning a decontamination activity. The survey should delineate the spread and depth of the contaminants relative to the decontamination criteria. Surface wastes, in general, can be evaluated for spread and depth with reasonable radiation survey equipment. Subsurface wastes on the other hand can be missed entirely, as happened during the radiation survey at the Shiprock site, although numerous exploration holes were bored and dug. The survey results can be used to define areas that may not be amenable to decontamination because of complications or safety reasons. For example, no decontamination of the bluff base was to be attempted because of the possibility the bluff might collapse on the personnel and equipment. Contaminated bottoms of decant ponds on the flood plain were not removed because they would be slurried by ground water. Slurry removal was deemed inefficient because the contaminants would be scattered and no equipment was available for its transport. The use of standard dense-media cyclones is well known, as they have been in use for many years. They are especially well suited for operating at low separating densities and for treating difficult coals containing a high percentage of near-gravity at the point of separation. Very few modifications of the basic design have ever been made. The author recently, however, has been interested in the development of a new type of dense-media cyclone that has been produced in Japan. He has observed the testing of this unit and has collected much data which he feels should be of considerable interest to coal preparation engineers. He feels that this unit, called the Swirl Cyclone, may be of substantial value as an alternate to the standard cyclones. It is certainly worthy of further investigation. There has been relatively little written in English-language publications on the Swirl Cyclone. It was briefly described at the Fifth International Coal Preparation Congress. I It has been described in a general manner by the author in two prior publications. 2, 3 This paper proposes to describe this device in more detail and at the same time submit technical data illustrating its wide characteristics.

A review of recent phosphate beneficiation developments shows that Flotaire cells, ranging from 0.20 m to 2.44 m in diameter, have been examined in pilot scale and commercial plants. Applications of the column cells have included sized feed fractions using anionic and cationic reagent systems. In plants where the Flotaire was installed as a test unit or as an optional circuit, its use has been largely discontinued. On the other hand, when management committed to installing the Flotaire as an integral part of the flowsheet, the performance expectations were met or exceeded.

This study is a survey of the current "state-of-the-art" of commercially-available sonar tools to monitor the true shape of man-made cavities within the Hutchinson Salt of south-central Kansas. The work entailed ferreting out the available information, most of which is proprietary in nature; then examining actual existing conditions and arriving at a reasonable scientific evaluation of the method. Our studies were confined to one LPG field and two brine well operations in south-central Kansas. No field testing of any devices was performed, only questioning user firms, and studying cores, logs, and sonar surveys graciously made available by the companies we have contacted. Since these data are still somewhat proprietary, the company participants have asked that their company names be omitted from this presentation.

Faced with decreasing production from the gold heap leach operation, Robinson implemented a drilling and blasting program on the leach pads in 1993. This program offset some of the negative effects of low ore permeability and short circuiting of leach solution that resulted in lower than optimum recoveries. The drilling and blasting program created new solution flow paths and increased gold recovery. Production and pulp assays at depth intervals, prior to and following drilling and blasting, reveal the degree of short circuiting and benefits of the program.

National income originating compared to physical production for an enterprise or an industry reflects its ability to strengthen the national economy. For a single industrial sector or for an industry this comparison can be useful to reflect changes that may occur in this ability to contribute because of changing supply-demand-income-investment equilibria. A favorable relationship can be postulated by specified economic incentive, and the accompanying technologic input required can be shown. The new index proposes the use of the Federal Reserve Board indexes of production divided by the constant dollar income originating in the petroleum industry which reflects increases or decreases in performance. When compared with other mineral industries and with, total industry, an approximation of relative strength is evident. By constructing three different hypothetical conditions for future petroleum imports, assuming a constant excess capacity requirement for domestic production, and providing an estimate for future domestic demand for petroleum, the impact on the performance index can be shown. Thus, a strong position for the petroleum and natural gas industry can be stated. If this is done, it becomes evident that because of restrictions on cost-price relationships, a drilling program that would provide enough domestic oil to meet demand may not be practicable. By difference, the amount of improvement in methods of production and processing through technologic advancements can be stated explicitly.

This paper presents a case study which applies risk assessment techniques in evaluating potential environmental problems associated with past waste disposal practices at a 65 acre non-ferrous metals and metal alloys manufacturing facility. Waste management activities at the site involved a number of surface impoundments for gangue material, neutralized acid rinse waters, acid rinse sludges, demolition debris, storm water runoff, stockpiled ores, and a permitted residual waste landfill. As a result of these activities, the She contained 9 identifiable waste management areas impacted by over 35 potentially hazardous chemicals and metals. Extensive environmental data obtained from investigations at the Site revealed heavy metal and volatile organic chemical contamination in various environmental media. These data were utilized to evaluate potential risks to human health and the environment. The human health risk assessment estimated potential health risks to workers, residents, and Site trespassers under current and expected future uses of the Site. Areas of the Site were identified which were considered to present potential health concerns under the various exposure scenarios. Results from the human health risk assessment were utilized to develop cost effective risk based soil remediation goals protective of the public health and environment.

In recent years drivage advance rates in the UK have in- creased from 35m per week in the 1980's to 100/150m per week possible today. These extended rates of advance have resulted in an increase in the potential methane, dust and heat generation at the drivage face. In order to disperse this additional pollutant load requires an increase of fresh air at the face. Although advance rates have changed, current auxiliary ventilation practice has not. UK mining law requires that the fresh air must be delivered to within 5m of the face. This has lead to the wide spread use of overlap auxiliary systems, since a pure forcing system set at this distance would lead to excessive airborne dust. UK mining law does not at present consider on-board mounted exhaust scrubber fans to constitute an effective overlap fan within mechanised drivages. In an attempt to determine whether working conditions could be safely and economically improved within mechanised drivages, a series of preliminary full scale gallery trials were con- ducted. A summary of the principal findings of these trials are presented together with an outline of a series of representative CFD simulations, scale model experiments.

Hsikwangshan mine is located at Lengshuijiang city of Hunan Province. It is a stibnite deposit. The orebody is gently inclined; its ore run is about 3 km in length and extends about 1.2 km along the direction of dip. The thickness of the ore body is non-uniform and varies from 1.5 to 20 m. The orebody is mined by room and pillar and cementation filling. The nine levels at the ore top have been mined out. At present, the mining operations are at the eleventh level. The mine ventilation system consist of three main fans which are installed in different shafts and are ventilated in parallel. The main fans can be connected to each other through comprehensive return air drifts. Two of the fans are located underground and the other on the surface. The general configuration of the ventilation system is shown in Figure 1. Because the operating areas are scattered and vary frequently as well, it is difficult to bring about air flow control. If the air flow cannot be varied with the variation of production in time, the air quantities are not sufficient in some areas and are excessive in others. However, it is also a problem to coordinate the three main fans with one another to obtain the optimum economic cost of operation. In order to make the air delivery fit the variation of production continuously to satisfy the ventilation requirement of the working faces and to reduce power consumption, we have made a great effort over five years to install an automatic control system for mine ventilation at the Hsikawangshan mine. The key part of this system is a microcomputer. The whole system consists of a console, which is located at the surface; the circuit network that is provided for signal transmission; air doors and ventilators at the working face; the scale air doors which are installed at the main branch airways; main fans and their speed regulating devices, as well as the sensors used for observing pressure, air quantities, temperature and the concentration of carbon monoxide, etc. This system can continuously telemeter the air quantities and carbon monoxide concentration in the main branch airways, air pressure, air quantities, electric current, the temperature of the bearings of the main fans, etc. According to the production air requirements, the system controls the ventilators or air doors which are located at the working faces and regulates the air quantity in the main branch airways. It can also choose the optimum mode of operation automatically, and regulate the rotating speed of the main fans to guarantee the least total power consumption while satisfying the total air quantity requirements. If abnormality of the observed results is discovered, the audible and flashing light alarm signal starts up automatically. The operating mode of ventilation equipment also feeds back to the control room and displays on the console. The configuration of control the system is shown in Figure 2.

"SUMMARY The “28 May Station” is the only transfer station between the existing Green and Red metro lines in Baku. As part of the huge development strategy of the metro network, the complete separation of the existing underground lines has been planned at this location, in order to simplify the operation of the future metro system. The extreme challenge of the project is represented by the need of achieve the separation of such lines over a breakdown of the operation of just five weeks. The lack of direct access from the surface, a complex geology with artesian water layers, a congested underground space and sensible buildings represent additional constraints. The chosen design solution consists in creating a complex steel pipe jacking frame around the operating tunnels and then excavating under such frame two large caverns where the separation of the existing lines and the construction of the new metro tunnels will be achieved. Soil treatments have been conceived to mitigate the geotechnical risks and to reduce possible impacts on the existing structures. The paper illustrate the challenges of this extraordinary project, one of the most complex underground structures under study, the design solutions and the risk management approach used to manage the complexity and to design the mitigations measures. INTRODUCTION The metro network in the capital of Azerbaijan is rapidly growing together with its metropolitan area. The beginnings of the existing metro system started in Baku in 1967 in Soviet times. To date, only two lines (Green and Red) are in operation with a total length of 34 km, including 23 stations. The future network will be much wider: besides the construction of three completely new lines and the extension of two existing lines, the whole metro project includes the development and modernization of the existing metro sections. A consortium formed by Systra (leader), Mott MacDonald (Praha) and Saman (Korea) awarded the contract for the preliminary and detailed design of infrastructures for the extension of Baku Metro Network. This extension consists in 83 km of new lines and extension of existing lines. As part of this modernization project, the connection of the Green Line at the 28 May / Cefer Cabbarli Stations, focus of this paper, represent also it’s ""Achilles' heel"" given that the already very congested system have only one transfer station."

In many papers concerned with fundamentals of the froth flotation process, authors have considered the contents of a flotation cell to be comprised of two immiscible phases, the froth and the pulp. I (Of course, each of these phases is in turn made up of several solid phases plus air and water.) This generalized concept of the flotation system can be extended by considering the cell contents to include two phases: an extracting phase, the air bubbles plus the collector, which removes a selected mineral component from the second phase, the ore pulp. Thus, there is an analogy between a flotation system on the one hand, and chemical extracting systems, such a solvent extraction system or a leaching system, on the other hand. Such extracting systems may be operated in cocurrent or countercurrent fashion. This paper includes first a brief discussion on the general nature of cocurrent and countercurrent operation as applied to froth flotation, and then presents the experimental results of flotation of a specular hematite ore by each method, using a tall oil fatty acid as collector. Cocurrent Flotation A conventional flotation circuit involving roughing, scavenging, and cleaning flotation is illustrated schematically in Figure 1. In such a circuit the col¬lector, or extractant, and new feed ore enter together at the head of the rougher circuit, and flow cocurrently to the scavenger circuit where more collector is added. According to this practice, sufficient collector is added to the head of the rougher (and scavenger) so that the final tailings are of low enough grade to be discarded. Since the flow of collector and ore is cocurrent, the process consists of single stage contact between the extracting phase and the ore pulp. If the scavenger concentrate is recycled to the head of rougher, the overall circuit has some of the characteristics of countercurrent flow. This paper will discuss the Final Tunnel Linings which were placed in 6700m of a 2.32m inside diameter precast concrete lined interceptor sewer tunnel in Staten Island, New York. Two methods were employed to install the final tunnel linings. One method involved forming and placing a polypropylene fiber reinforced concrete cunnette invert, followed by an arch pour. The second method involved the jacking of reinforced concrete pipe into the tunnel, followed by a low density cellular concrete backfill grout. These two methods will be described and compared.

Falconbridge Limited is developing a major nickel mine at Craig which lies between 600 m, 915 m and 1500 m below surface and is accessed on the 600 m and 1250 m levels of Onaping Mine. To supply adequate ventilation for mine development and initial ore production, two raises, 1200 m long are to be driven in norite and granitic gneiss. Falconbridge has purchased a Robbins 97RL Raise Drill and a string of 330 mm drill pipe to ream these raises in 600 m legs at diameter. The paper describes the introduction of deep hole, large diameter raise boring technology into Falconbridge operations involving contractors and specialists in the technology.
