A form of column flotation cell is described in which the contact between the feed and the air stream is made in a mixing device at the top of a vertical downcomer. The air-liquid mixture flows downward to discharge into a shallow pool of pulp in the bottom of a short cylindrical column. The bubbles disengage and rise to the top of the column to overflow into a concentrate launder, while the tails are discharged from the bottom of the vessel. The main advantages of the device described are that the overall height of the column is reduced to about 1 m (3 ft), and the column can be self-inducing with respect to the air supply. Experimental results are given from tests on a feed stream to a conventional zinc cleaner circuit. Using wash water to reduce gangue entrainment, the column gave high concentrate grades and high recoveries.

Experiments were conducted to determine the quantity and purity of ultraclean anthracite that could be prepared in the laboratory, using conventional separating techniques. A low-, a medium-, and a high-volatile anthracite were studied. Specific gravity separation followed by grinding, screening, and refloating at lighter specific gravities yielded small quantities of material purified to 1.0 percent ash, as follows: From low-volatile anthracite, 0.7 percent; from medium-volatile coal, 1.0 percent; and from high-volatile coal, 2.3 percent. The reduction in ash had no appreciable effect on the volatile matter or sulfur content of the coal. The limited quantities of material containing 1.0 percent or less ash obtainable indicate that if ultraclean coal is desired, a practical approach should include the processing units as an integral part of a conventional dense-media washing plant.

Since 1882, world zinc production has increased. In contrast, United States zinc production rose until about 1915, but since then has remained nearly constant, with a slight tendency to decrease. Production from the Tri-State district, the largest early source of zinc in the United States, has gone down steadily; this decline has been balanced by a growth in the rate of other districts. These changes in United States production are due to economic, not geological, factors. Recent exploration has located large mineable ore bodies; additional deposits will undoubtedly be found in the strata-bound carbonate rock and volcanogenic environments. A statistical analysis of the exploration effort in the Middle Tennessee district indicates that new discoveries can be expected there. Thus, the United States is in an early stage of the production cycle for zinc. Of major mining districts in the United States, only the Tri-State is exhausted under current economic conditions; large zinc resources of low-grade material, which would repay mining at higher prices or improved technology, are known to exist in that district.

The Witwatersrand reefs provide excellent examples of chemical and structural control on gold distribution. All mined gold appears to coma from a carbon -gold association and/or Fe-S-Au association, and also from immediately above or below unconformity surfaces. A total raliance on the current syngenetic model for Witwatersrand gold does not appear to be justified from the accumulated data and may be responsible for missed opportunities during exploration: consideration of other models is suggested especially where they better fit the data. The stratabound natura of Witwatersrand gold 1& critical to mining, but is emphasized in syngenetic models to the virtual exclusion of many other important observations. By analogy with other deposit types, stratabound character is probably a poor guide to genesis.

Good morning ladies and gentlemen - today I am in an enviable position for two basic reasons - No. 1, since I am first on the program, the audience should start out awake because those that partied too much last night are still asleep, but in their room, not here. No. 2, since copper, iron, and mining technology are not competitive, the veracity of my statements will not be questioned. Most such meetings I attend are based on the subject of energy and the coal industry does have competition from oil, gas, hydro, and nuclear. However, to counteract this advantage I am the usual engineer with a limited vocabulary by schooling, and the remaining vocabulary almost completely eliminated due to the presence of ladies. In relation to the past of the coal industry, we have not only suffered the competition of other energy sources mentioned before, but in addition have in the last 25 to 30 years been required to meet the demands of a vastly changing market. To explain this statement, I am sure many of you can remember 30 to 40 years back when most homes were heated by coal furnaces or stoves and shudder to recall the shoveling of coal into the fire and the carrying out of ashes with the attendent manual labor dust. Now this space heating portion of our sales has almost become non-existant due to an almost universal switch from coal to natural gas, oil, and electric heating. Actual figures show a decrease from 119 million to less than 28 million tons per year in less than a twenty year span. Also, most of you can remember the coal burning steam locomotives and the tremendous volume of coal they consumed and then the very rapid change to the diesel-electric locomotives, incorporating improved large diesel engines driving D C generators and electric drive motors, which resulted in cheaper motive power. This change over was so complete that the annual tonnage of coal dropped from 125 million to less than 2 million tons in 15 years. 'Actually, now it requires some considerable interrogation and traveling to find a locomotive still operating on steam.

A cooperative study was undertaken in a neutral atmosphere by representatives of the environmental community, the mining industry and state government to identify and resolve environmental issues associated with base and precious metal mining before a commercial mining development is announced. The study included testing Minnesota's as-yet-untried nonferrous mining regulatory program using three hypothetical mining developments sited in environmentally sensitive areas where future mining could occur. Results include identification of critical paths for regulatory decision making, identification of particularly sensitive environmental issues that mill need continued deliberation before resolution and characterization of data necessary for environmental review and permitting decisions.

A comprehensive flotation study has been carried out on a Chinese fluorspar ore using the packed flotation column developed at Michigan Technological University. The results are compared with that of a conventional mechanical flotation method on the same feedstocks. Key factors controlling flotation performance of both methods are evaluated based upon a simple statistic design. The flotation concentrate produced in one stage of the packed column has 4-S% higher recovery and much lower silica impurity content than that produced by up to six stages when a conventional mechanical cell is used. The results also show that the packed column flotation process is particularly suitable for recovery of finer fluorspar particles.

Located south of downtown Seattle, the Beacon Hill Station & Tunnels is the key section of the southern segment of Sound Transit’s proposed new LINK light rail system. This paper presents an overview of the design, which includes 4,300 ft of segmentally-lined bore twin tunnels and a deep mined station. With platforms located156 feet below grade, the station itself is only the second large-scale mined station in soil the US. Its complex geometry combined with variable soil conditions—sands, silt sand clays with slickensides—challenged the designer’s to come up with a SEM-based design that addresses the owner’s risk, cost and schedule concerns.

The various facets of university-company cooperative activities and the opportunities for collaborative research for the mineral industries are presented in this paper. The advantages and disadvantages of various alternative research funding arrangements for the researcher, the university, and the sponsoring corporation are discussed. Examples of university-industry cooperative research programs are briefly outlined. The concept of a cooperative mining research program is presented. The improvement of performance through techno- logical developments and human skills may well be the greatest competitive edge available to the U.S. mining industry. In this regard, the need for new endeavors between industry and universities can hardly be overemphasized.

The 12,710-m (41,720-ft) Riverside Badlands Tunnel is located between the most active faults—San Andreas and San Jacinto—in Southern California. To accomplish the impervious final lining design and to accommodate the effects of earthquake ground motions, a new approach was developed and is prescribed in this paper. Two final lining options, welded steel pipe and prestressed concrete cylinder pipe, are considered for the tunnel, which will be excavated under groundwater and ground conditions from soft rock to hardrock at depths exceeding 244 m (800 ft). The buckling strength, serviceability, and structural integrity under seismic effects and other loads were considered in the design.

The history of the Australian coal industry is almost as old as the history of Australia after new settlement. The first cargo of coal was exported from Newcastle to India in 1799. Although coal has been mined in Australia for almost two centuries, there are indications that the first coal was processed in 1877 in the New-castle area, nearly a half-century after the first coal processing in Europe. Processing on any significant scale began only in 1944 at the Newcastle Steel Works. In Queensland, however, coal processing did not begin until the second quarter of this century. The well-known dramatic growth of mining and processing of Australian coal since the mid-sixties has primarily been due to the expansion of the export market in Japan and other Asian and European countries. Black coal occurs in most of the major sedimentary basins in Australia. The better known deposits of commercial importance are in Sydney, Bowen, Oakland and Gailiee Basins (Figure 1). Apart from Collie Basin in Western Australia, other coal deposits of the Arckinga Basin in South Australia, the Bonaparte Basin in Northern Territory and Tasmania Basin, Tasmania, are basically unexploited. Sydney Basin of New South Wales and Bowen Basin of Queensland remain the major producers of black coal in Australia.

Introduction Heavy media separation (HMS), also called dense media or float¬sink separation, is one of the newer forms of gravity concentration. Though the concept can be traced to the last century, the process has enjoyed its major growth since 1940. Heavy liquid separation is a mutation. The heavy media process is used extensively to clean coal and for the concentration of a wide variety of ores such as those of iron, lead-zinc, chrome, manganese, tin, tungsten, fluorspar, magnesite, sylvite, garnet, diamonds, gravel, etc. It may be used where ever a significant density difference occurs between two minerals, and commercial separations are typically made in the range of 1.3 to 3.8 sp gr. The particle size treated ranges downward from 6-8 in. top size. Particles greater than about 1/16-in. (10 mesh) may be treated in a "static" bath, though for reasons of separation efficiency, + 1/2 -in- feed is usually preferred. For particles less than this size, separation in a heavy media cyclone is generally used. The flowsheet of a typical heavy media process, in this case one using a ferrous medium, is shown in Fig. I. In essence, the process consists of: (1) preparation of the feed usually by wet screening to remove undesired fines, (2) heavy medium separation, and (3) removal and recovery of the medium from the separated products. Many muta¬tions of the basic scheme are possible and numerous options are possi¬ble. HMS offers the following potential advantages:12 1) Ability to make sharp separations. 2) Ability to change the specific gravity of separation quickly to meet changing conditions. 3) Ability to remove products continuously. 4) Ability to treat a broad size range of products. 5) Ease of start-up and shutdown without loss of separating efficiency. 6) Relatively low medium cost and low media losses. 7) Low operating and maintenance costs. 8) High capacity with the use of relatively little floor space. 9) Relatively low capital investment per ton of capacity. The process may be used to produce a finished concentrate, two finished concentrates, or a concentrate and a middling of differing quality, or a preconcentrate by rejection of unwanted gangue. It is an ideal method for the reprocessing of coarse waste dumps. The greatest use for the process lies in coal cleaning and in the preconcentration of ores. The relatively inexpensive heavy media process may be used advantageously to reject large quantities of coarsely crushed gangue. When used in this way, the process will allow: (1) the use of lower cost but less selective mining methods with the "overbreak" material being removed at the front end of the concentrator or preparation plant; (2) a substantial reduction in the quantity of ore that must be finely ground for subsequent mineral liberation and separa¬tion. Since comminution is often the single most expensive step in beneficiation, it is desirable to eliminate as many essentially barren pieces of rock as possible before the grinding step, (3) a decrease in overall plant capital cost per ton of concentrate since the size of the plant from the dense medium step onward will be smaller. Several general references are available,12-18 though much of the technical data on the process is widely scattered in the general litera¬ture. Heavy Liquid Separation Organic Liquids Given sufficient settling time, it is possible to make a perfect separa¬tion between two particles of differing density by placing them in a liquid whose density is intermediate between the two. This means of achieving a perfect separation has proven to be elusive because of problems in feed preparation, particle settling rates, operational considerations, and economic constraints. There are a wide variety of heavy liquids that could be used, most of them halogenated hydrocarbons, and a few typical examples are given in Table 4. These liquids are most commonly used in ore dressing for the laboratory fractionation of ore particles on the basis of specific gravity. Laboratory Separations. Using liquids typified by those given in Table 4, separations are made to develop either the standard washability curves used to estimate the response of a given sample to gravity concentration or to prepare a partition curve to evaluate the effective¬ness of a given gravity separation process or piece of equipment. A typical washability curve is given in Fig. 2.19 Such curves are generated for raw coal, e.g., by treating either the whole or various size fractions of the sample in a series of heavy liquids and analyzing the various specific gravity fractions so produced. The procedure is relatively simple for coal samples because of the ready availability of a wide variety of relatively low cost heavy liquids in the density range 1.2¬-2.0. For ores the problem is much more complicated, because only a few high density liquids, all of rather high cost, are available. Parti¬tion curves are generated in the same manner by treating the separated products in the same liquids. Greater details on the procedures to be used in heavy liquid separa¬tions are to be found in the literature (for coal, Refs. 13, 14 and 19 and for ore, Refs. 20 and 21). For testing coal, calcium and zinc chloride solutions have been used extensively in the past, though today halogenated hydrocarbons (available under the trade name Certigrav) are the preferred media. An historic underground copper mine in Wyoming is discharging neutral but copper-laden water into a pristine creek. The EPA-deferred site qualifies for reclamation by the Wyoming Abandoned Mine Land (AML) program. The cleanup goal is to restore the discharge so that the creek can eventually support a trout fishery. Hydrological and geochemical investigations underground have suggested two sources of mine water: one clean and the other containing copper. Results of bench-and pilot-scale tests support the viability of using low-cost passive treatment techniques to reduce copper concentrations in the near-freezing mine discharge.

After a brief consideration of the properties of zinc sulfide minerals, their flotation characteristics, and their reactions with thiol collectors, the literature on the activation of the minerals by cupric ion, their deactivation by cyanide, and their depression is reviewed in detail. The distinction between deactivation and depression is stressed. The contradictions in the published results and theories are discussed and attempts are made to resolve them. It is concluded that, whereas all aspects of the subject require further investigation, the study of depression is most likely to yield benefits in practice.

The Bureau of Mines performed a study to determine optimal locations for longwall face methane monitoring equipment. Longwall face ignitions continue to be a concern to the U. S. coal mining industry. Gains in ignition control technology have been somewhat negated by advances in longwall productivity. More reliable, heavy-duty longwall face systems generate higher production rates and increase methane liberation rates. These rates will likely continue to rise in the future as further coal production increases occur. Efforts will continue in the areas of methane drainage, methane containment, and methane dilution. In addition, more effective face methane monitoring is needed. As technology continues toward automated longwall panels, the importance of monitoring for methane at the shearer becomes even more significant. Since the primary face ignition source is the shearer mining machine, the Bureau ran tests to determine the best location to take methane readings on the shearer. This information, in conjunction with data obtained from field studies, provides a knowledge base for selecting optimum face methane monitoring locations. INTRODUCTION Face ignitions are a concern for many U. S. longwalls and will continue to be until better control technology can be developed or until reliable and accurate knowledge can be provided as to when an explosive concentration is present. Figure 1 shows the number of reported U. S. underground longwall ignitions from 1980 to 1990. The number of longwall panels have remained relatively constant over this time period with 89 reported in 1980, compared to 96 in 1990. In spite of technological improvements in mining over the past decade, no significant reduction in the number of longwall face ignitions has occurred. One factor contributing to this is that the U. S. coal industry is mining gassier seams causing methane liberation rates on the average to be higher (Trevits, 1991; Grau, 1987). Another factor is the development and implementation of more reliable, heavy-duty longwall face systems that are generating higher production rates and higher methane liberation rates. Additionally, the average panel width in 1991 was 714 ft; a 44 pct increase from 1980 when faces averaged a width of 495 ft (Merritt, 1992). Increases in panel width also impact total face methane emissions. [ ] There have been substantial advances in control technology in the areas of methane drainage, methane containment, and methane dilution. In some mines, efforts to drain methane in advance of mining have proven effective, but geological conditions often preclude this approach (McCall, 1984; Ely, 1989). In other cases, ventilation air quantities of over 100,000 ft3/min and face velocities of over 1,000 ft/min have been implemented on longwall panels. Other operations have implemented anti-ignition spray systems which use water sprays behind each cutting bit to quench the hot streaks created from cutting noncoal materials (Courtney, 1990). Other control techniques, such as the modified shearer clearer system and ventilated drum, have been used to increase the amount of turbulence and ventilation around the cutting drums, thus reducing methane levels (Cecala, 1986; Divers, 1987).

We in Kennecott are well aware that Alaskans are interested in the progress of our project at Ruby Creek. We would very much like to be able to present you with a final report at this time and tell you about a new mine. I'm afraid, however, that it will be several years at best before such a report can be made. This, then, is an interim report to describe briefly some of our findings to date, and to acquaint you with some of the problems, both geologic and economic, which must 5e resolved favorably before we can talk about a mine. There are several things about this project which make it unusual and interesting to those of us who have been connected with it. Firstly, there is the fundamental importance to Alaska, in the present stage of its economic history, of any undertaking which offers promise of turning a natural resource into a competitive export product. I am sure all of us would get a lot more satisfaction out of having a part in bringing in a new mine in Alaska than we would out of adding another one to the long list in, say, Arizona.

Sweden is beginning to reap the rewards of a process that has transformed a country with a history of metal mining into one of Europe's most vibrant exploration regions. Exploration and mining companies from North America, Europe and Australia have joined local firms in the search of gold, base metals and diamonds. This has been due to changes in Sweden's mining laws in the early 1990s. These changes opened the way for unhindered private sector investment in the country's mineral industry. More than 20,000 km2 (4.9 million acres), mainly in northern Sweden, is now held under granted or applied exploration claims. Exploration permits diamonds, applied or granted covers more than half of Sweden's surface. This is a greater proportion of the country than ever before. Major mining companies and junior explorationists are evaluating a geological potential that bears favorable comparison to other major mining centers. Historically, Sweden's gold re- sources occur in greenstone belts in northernmost Sweden and in association with massive sulfide deposits in the Skellefte district. These are receiving particular attention by exploration companies. In addition, new areas in Sweden are also being explored for gold. This increases the probability that Swedish gold production - already the highest in Europe - will increase in the future (Table 1). Sweden's recorded mining history goes back for much of the last large pool of expertise in exploration, mining, equipment manufacturing and minerals industry research. In addition, the Geological Survey of Sweden provides sup- port for exploration in terms of data archives, processing and publications. Other benefits for exploration companies are Sweden's communications infrastructure, its member- ship in the European Union, bringing access to one of the world's major markets and the high level of educational, technical and language skills held by the country's work- force. And deregulation of the economy and the introduction of competitive corporate tax rates have made Sweden a favorable destination for investment in Europe.

It is doubtful if anyone knows precisely how many U.S. coal miners have been killed by roof falls. In 1931, 51 miners were killed by falls or rock in every 10-day period (Paul, 1). Roley (2) indicated that from 1882 to 1945, over 3,700 men were killed by roof falls in Illinois alone. During this 63-year period, roof falls accounted for 47.6 percent of the coal mine accident fatalities. Similarly, Price and Nolting (3) reported that during the 10-year period beginning in 1937, roof falls claimed over 50 percent of the lives lost in West Virginia coal mines. Over 150 miners died under fallen rock in West Virginia alone, in each of those years. Certainly, the statistics have improved over the years. The Theodore Barry Report of 1971 (4) indicated that during, the previous 4 years, fewer than 100 miners per year lost their lives to roof falls--in the entire United States. The improvement is less remarkable when it is realized that the accident rate has declined only as the number of miners employed underground has declined. The TRW Report (4) pointed out that although the number of fatalities in underground coal mining (from all causes) had been cut in half from 1956 to 1965, the fatality rate per thousand miners had remained virtually constant. The decreased accident rate was due not to a reduction in hazards but to a reduction in work force. Roof falls still claim approximately 50 percent of the lives lost in underground coal mines. Considering the increased underground production of coal which must result from our energy crisis, the environmentalists' pressure against strip mining, and our inevitably diminishing supply of strippable coal, it is apparent that some means must be found to reduce the number of lives claimed by coal mine roof falls.

The Mineral Resources Institute (MRI) of the School of Mines and Energy Development (SOMED), University of Alabama conducted studies to determine the potential for upgrading the Eastern Devonian shales by flotation. Results of those studies indicate that flotation concentrates containing 150 liters of oil/t (36 gal/t) can be produced from shale containing 50 liters of oil/t (12 gal/t) as determined by Fischer Assay with good recovery of the kerogen. Organic carbon and trace elements such as molybdenum, vanadium and uranium also are concentrated with the kerogen. Kerogen concentration was found to be a function of the size of grind.

We evaluated a new process for remediation of acid rock drainage (ARD). The process treats ARD with intermittently fluidized beds of granular limestone maintained within a continuous flow reactor pressurized with CO2. Tests were performed over a thirty day period at the Toby Creek mine drainage treatment plant, Elk County, Pennsylvania in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. Equipment performance was established at operating pressures of 0,34,82, and 117 kPa using an ARD flow of 227 L/min. The ARD had the following characteristics: pH, 3.1; temperature, 10 OC; dissolved oxygen, 6.4 mg/L; acidity, 260 mg/5; total iron, 21 mg/L; aluminum, 22 mg/L; manganese, 7.5 mg/L; and conductivity, 1400 uS/cm. In all cases tested, processed ARD was net alkaline with mean pH and alkalinities of 6.7 and 59 mg/L at a CO2 pressure of 0 kPa, 6.6 and 158 mg/L at 34 kPa, 7.4 and 240 mg/L at 82 kPa, and 7.4 and 290 mg/L at 117 kPa Processed ARD alkalinities were correlated to the settled bed depth (p<0.001) and CO2 pressure (p<0.001). Iron, aluminum, and manganese removal efficiencies of 96%, 99%, and 5%, respectively, were achieved with filtration following treatment. No indications of metal hydroxide precipitation or armoring of the limestone were observed. The surplus alkalinity established at 82 kPa was successful in treating an equivalent of 1136 L/min (fivefold dilution) of the combined three ARD streams entering the Toby Creek Plant. This side-stream capability provides savings in treatment unit scale as well as flexibility in treatment effect. The capability of the system to handle higher influent acidity was tested by elevating the acidity to 5000 mg/L with sulfuric acid. Net alkaline effluent was produced, indicating applicability of the process to highly acidic ARD.
