Seismic methods provide an efficient and comprehensive approach to overburden studies pertinent to mining exploration and development, and to other mining and civil engineering problems such as rock mechanics, slope stability, and foundation engineering. For the purpose of defining geologic units and structural features, these methods are generally regarded as the most accurate, but most expensive, of the commonly-used geophysical exploration methods. Although the accuracy and cost of seismic work are generally affected adversely by rugged topography and complicated geologic conditions, it is in rough terrain and complex geology that seismic methods offer important advantages in overburden investigations. For example, to find the surface of rock underlying unconsolidated overburden at depths of approximately 200 feet, a 50-foot spacing of drill holes along the profile line would be required to yield a degree of resolution and accuracy similar to that obtained from a 50-foot spacing between seismic detectors along the same line. See Figure 1. In cases similar to that shown in Figure 1, a twelve-channel recording seismic system would be used. The main components of such a system would be: 1. detectors (commonly referred to as geophones) which convert the ground movement resulting from seismic waves into an electrical signal. 2. a multi-conductor cable which connects the seismic detectors to the amplifiers. 3. ampliiiers, amplify and filter the electrical signals . 4. oscillograph, records the amplified signal. 5. the blaster and firing line. A typical layout of the seismic spread and the components of the system Is shown in Figure 2.

Traditionally in coal processing jigs have been used to clean the coarse coal fraction, the +3/8" or +1/4" material. Today with the advent of modern fine coal jigs in the United States, its place was moved from the coarse to the inter- mediate coal circuit, the 3/8" x 100 mesh. The most economical coarse coal circuit to build and operate is a heavy media bath circuit. The following table summarizes the cost per raw coal ton processed for a coarse coal jig circuit, and a coarse coal heavy media bath circuit. The flowsheets used to compare these two circuits are shown in Figures 1 and 2.

INTRODUCTION Run-of-mine (ROM) coal generally falls into two major groups: that from underground mining (continuous mining machines) and that from strip mining. Continuous miners produce a finer product and strip mining a coarser product that is crushed to produce the desired size. Further size reduction depends on the proposed use or uses for the coal. For example, for pulverized coal power plants as a rough general rule, the coal is ground or pulverized to 80% less than 200 mesh (0.075 mm) before it is blown into the boiler furnace as a coal-air suspension. For solvent-refined coal processes, the desired size is about <30 mesh (< 0.60 mm); in fluidized bed uses, the coal is typically < 8, in. (< 1.6 mm); for Lurgi pressure gasifiers, the desired size is 1 to 2% in. (25 to 63 mm). Coal preparation plants typically work with a coarse size fraction of 6X 1/14 in. (150X32 mm). The past decades has shown a steady increase in the tonnage of coal cleaned, 1 but it seems probable that the next decades will produce much wider applica- tion of deep coal cleaning before use and that the stages of crushing and pulverization from ROM coal to end use will be integrated with coal cleaning processes. Since different cleaning processes work better with different ranges of coal size and the degree of cleaning possible is intimately connected with the size of coal, a systems design engineer will need as much information as possible concerning the size distributions produced by different types of machines and how these can be modified by different ways of operating the machines. In general, the following questions will be of concern: 1.What type of crusher or grinder is best, or most satisfactory, for reducing a given feed size and type of coal to a desired product size? Frequently, the desired product is smaller than some nominal size, but with as few fines as possible, or the fraction in some size range has to be as high as possible. 2. How big does the machine have to be for a given throughput rate? 3. How much electrical energy (or its equivalent) is required per ton of product? 4. How does the size distribution vary with change in throughput rate, and is a control scheme necessary or desirable? 5. Can the size distribution be readily varied if desired? 6. What is the optimum way to operate a machine in a given system? This section will emphasize certain general principles which guide us in answering these questions. The choice of TBM type is never easy, but it becomes especially challenging when faced with a hard rock tunnel with expected high water flows and pressure. Slurry Shield tunneling has a long history of being used in these conditions to minimize the risk, though this method has brought with it other risks along with cost considerations. At recent projects around the world, another method has been proven to effectively manage these project risks without utilizing Slurry Shield tunneling: Shielded, NonContinuous Pressurized (NCP)-TBM tunneling in rock with a comprehensive grouting program. In this paper, the authors will analyze the use of Shielded NCP TBMs at projects around the world as compared with slurry shield tunneling in rock under water pressure. Recommendations will be given in order to establish a clear picture of the optimal tunneling method.

5.1 INTRODUCTION There are several types of surface ground disturbances, each of which is immediately transmitted to surface structures and causes damage of various forms, depending on the location of the structures in the subsidence basin. Many criteria have also been proposed for defining the potential structural damage. All of these topics will be discussed in this chapter. 5.2 TYPES OF GROUND DAMAGES There are two types of ground damage, continuous and dis¬continuous, that could inflict damages to surface structures. Dis¬continuous ground damage is open fractures of various degrees. Four types of fractures are commonly seen (Brauner, 1973b): 1. Fissures or cracks. Cracks are the most common form of ground damage and range from completely closed to several feet wide. Surface cracks are most prominent when the ratio of mining depth to mining height is smaller than 30 to 50 times mining height. Cracks initiate parallel to, but ahead of the moving long¬wall face at some intervals when the depth-to-mining height ratio is less than 25 to 30. As the face continues to move, they open up and then close gradually, and in most cases eventually close up completely when the face moves farther away. Sometimes when the depth-to-mining height ratio is larger, cracks may initiate be¬hind the face and go through the same cycle. Cracks are also more likely to occur in the hill when the face is moving in the uphill direction. Cracks also occur at or near both sides of the panel edges. Those cracks tend to remain open permanently. When the surface is covered with grass or other vegetation, cracks of less than 1 to 2 in. wide usually do not penetrate it and become invisible on the surface. 2. Steps. A step may occur when the longwall face stops abruptly if the mining depth-to-mining height ratio is less than 20. Steps may also occur along the panel edges. Steps also range from a few inches to a few feet in width and depth. If planes of weakness are oriented favorably, ground will slide along these planes and form steps on the surface. 3. Cave-in pits. These result from local collapse of the ground from the mine level to the surface when the mining depth is less than 150 ft and occur mostly above abandoned mined lands. They may be as large as 40 ft wide and deep. 4. Bumps (compression ridges). Bumps result from ground compression and occur mostly near panel center some time after mining. Bumps of up to 4 ft, but mostly 1 to 2 ft, have been identified. Continuous ground damage refers to the formation of the sub¬sidence basin where continuous nondestructive ground deforma¬tions occur. As mentioned earlier, continuous ground deforma¬tions associated with a subsidence basin include subsidence, slope, curvature, displacement, horizontal strain, twisting, and shearing. 5.3 TYPES OF SURFACE STRUCTURAL DAMAGES Both continuous and discontinuous ground disturbance cause damage to surface structures. A. Structural Damages Due to Discontinuous Ground Disturbance 1. Fissures or cracks. Open cracks can cause dislocation of surface structure if the gaps are sufficiently large so that the struc¬tural elements cannot resist but fail. On the other hand, minor cracks affect only the appearance, and not the structural integrity. 2. Steps. When a surface structure is located on a step, some portions of the structure lose support and become overhung. In the case of a residential house, there will likely be many open frac¬tures in the overhung portions, followed in severe cases by sepa¬ration of the superstructure at the edge of the step. 3. Cave-in pits. If the caved-in pit is larger than the surface structure, the structure will drop into the pit and become unstable. If the caved-in pit is smaller than the surface structure, the struc¬ture may either become overhung or lose support in some portions. In either case, it is unsafe for use. 4. Bumps (compression ridges). Bumps will disrupt roadways or house floor. If located under supporting members of the struc¬tures, it may cause damages. B. Structural Damage Due to Continuous Ground Disturbances 1. Subsidence. Pure subsidence or uniform subsidence over an area does not cause any structural damage. However, if it becomes a topographical low area, it may be flooded with water and make the surface structures unusable. It must be noted that the flat bottom area at the center of the final supercritical subsidence basin does not reach that position suddenly. Rather, as shown in Fig. 3.1, it is subjected to the dynamic surface deformation asso¬ciated with the traveling subsidence basin before it is left behind to be part of the flat-bottom area. Therefore any structure located at the center of the final supercritical subsidence basin must be able to resist the dynamic surface deformation in order not to be dam¬aged. 2. Slope. Ground slope will induce tilting of the structure. Tall structures with small base areas, such as water towers, chimneys, and power transmission towers are most sensitive to ground slope. If the ground slope is such that if after tilting the center of the gravity of the tilted structure falls outside the base area, it will topple, but this seldom occurs. Ground slope will change the designed slope of a buried trans¬portation pipeline, either increasing or decreasing the original slope depending on whether the ground slope coincides with or opposes the original slope. There are maximum allowable final slopes for various types of transporting materials. Ground slope also affects highways and railways. There is a maximum allowable final slope for a railway because tractive effort increases 1/1000 of its weight for every increase of 1/1000 in grade. 3. Curvature. There are positive (convex) and negative (con¬cave) curvatures. When a surface structure is located on a positive curvature, both ends become unsupported, followed by bending upward at the midportion. The top portion is subjected to more severe stretching than the lower one. Capital resource budgeting is the means by which managers of publicly held companies fulfill their fiduciary responsibility to maximize the wealth of stockholders. Managers maximize shareholder wealth by allocating investment capital to the most productive of competing alternative projects in a manner that maximizes the net present value of the firm&apos;s future cash flow. The techniques of cash flow analysis are the primary tools available for selecting a corporate portfolio of projects that meets or exceeds the rate of return expected by shareholders. The reliability of cash flow analysis hinges on the ability of managers to forecast the future values of individual components. The accuracy and reliability of forecasting determine the soundness of capital investment decisions and, ultimately, determine the value of the firm. The present paper will explore tools for forecasting the spot market price of a commodity, silver, to demonstrate the difficulty and uncertainty involved in forecasting the future. The commodity price is only one of a number of components of the cash flow equation. Each component has a unique and uncertain future and must be individually analyzed and forecast to arrive at a robust cash flow model.

"One method to increase the exploitation rate of a mine is the use of backfill with residual materials in exploited areas. The backfilled material is meant to support both, the walls of galleries and pillars as well as the roof of mining openings. With increasing depth, the exploitation rate diminishes fast, thus the application of backfill in order to change the layout of the mine is crucial for economic success. In result of using backfill, it is possible to change the layout of the working area with a higher ratio to excavated areas and less area occupied by pillars. Thus it is possible to boost the output of a mine by using backfill. Setting the criteria for the selection of the best possible materials and whose improvement, it is useful to know about their qualities and handicaps. The Mining Department at TU Bergakademie Freiberg is analyzing the parameters of residues from different processing methods, accrued in plants of different potash mines and blending different residues for optimization of material attributes. These were significantly characterized by basically parameters like the size and the distribution of different diameters of the grain material. INTRODUCTION The chair for underground mining methods at TU Bergakademie Freiberg is tasked with the sufficient and sustainable supply of economics with raw materials. The steady high demand, the rising prices and the finiteness of the deposits are reasons for the need of an optimized economic utilization of natural deposits, a continuous improvement of mining technics and technology. From an ecological and economical position the best possible utilization of the resources has to be achieved. Many mining operations are by reasons of the deposit not able to haul valuable minerals only, they have to haul a mixture of valuable minerals and waste rock. This hauled combination is given into the processing plant for separation and enrichment of the valuable mineral. The residuals of the processing are commonly dumped to a waste rock pile. For minimizing the size of such a waste rock pile and also minimizing the ecological footprint of a mining operation the only way is minimizing the quantity of accruing waste rock material. Both, optimization of economic utilization and also minimization of waste rock dumps can be realized in one by backfill with processing waste rock material in mined out areas. Especially in mines, mined by room and pillar method, smaller dimension of the pillars are sufficient for safety and stability. By the way less valuable minerals have to be leaved back in the mine and the mine outcome is increasing."

A computer aided design software system for long range coal surface mine planning has been developed by the authors. The system is composed of two subsystems: a coal deposite sub- system and a long range mine planning system. The geological parameters are estimated and a grid model is formed, then a 3-D block model can be developed for mining design. The long range surface mine planning system is based on oriented graph simulation and combined approaches to seek for the optimal deign alternative. This mining model consists of a number of sub-models to realize mining design functions such as: calculation of mining volume and coal quality by graph scanning; determination of operational stripping ratio by interactive design; varification of annual coal production; delimitation and development of dumping site; optimization of material flow direction and volumes by Linear Programming; surface mine production scheduling by interactive iteration; etc. The software package was developed on PC computer 486. It features classified menu guide, module structure, figure and graph representation on the screen and flexible interactive functions. This system has been applied to an open cut coal mine and predicted functions have been obtained.

The thematic mapper (TM) aboard Landsat II records image data at seven wavelength intervals or bands. Three record the visible region; three record reflected IR energy. A false color image combining bands 7, 4 and 2 rendered as red, green and blue respectively provides maximum discrimination of rock types in arid regions. Structural analyses and interpretation defines regional structures, large volcano-tectonic features intrusive complexes, all which localize mineralization. Special digital processing using the ratio: Band 3 / Band 1 can identify limonites and other iron minerals. The ratio: Band 5/ Band 7 identifies clays and alunite. These ratio images show features and patterns of hydrothermal mineral systems: ?patterns of sulfide and alteration zoning in large porphyry systems, and zones of strong silica, quartz-alunite-illite, and pyrite-sericite in epithermal centers. Thus, digitally processed Landsat TM images are a cost effective and rapid means to recognize altered areas and define targets for large mineralized systems.

[This paper represents a portion of a lager study, concerning dispersion patterns of major, minor and trace elements in wall-rock about ore-bodies in part of the Colorado Mineral Belt. This phase of the work pertains to the Mg/Ca ratio variations in wall-rock adjacent to ore-bodies in two mines of the Alma-Horseshoe Mining District of Central Colorado. The mining district is located 80 miles southwest of Denver (Figure 1) on the east flank of the Mosquito Range. The area is typified by rugged relief with altitudes from 10,500 to 14,000 feet.]

Innovative mining technology came to Texas in the form of bucket wheel excavator/cross-pit spreader systems. Texas Utilities Mining Company put the first system to work at its Big Brown Mine in December 1985. The second such system was put into operation at the Monticello Mine in February 1991. The cross-pit spreader systems are mobile, electrically powered, excavation and conveyor systems, the principal components of which include bucket wheel excavators (BVE) and an across-the-pit conveyor (spreader). These crawler mounted machines operate as a unit; the BVE&apos;s excavate overburden, feed it via conveyors to the spreader which in turn conveys the material across the open pit and onto the developing spoil bank. The system at the Big Brown Mine is composed of 2 BVE&apos;s and an across-the-pit conveyor while the Monticello system is made up of 1 BVE and a spreader. The BVE&apos;s prestrip overburden preparing a dragline bench for the final removal of overburden. Numerous evaluations, including lignite production requirements, economics, overburden characteristics, rehandle reduction, spoil stability, and the compatibility with dragline operations, led to the selection of the cross-pit spreader system at the Big Brown Mine. The system has proven itself as a viable and economical means of prestripping. The system&apos;s success at the Big Brown Mine led to the development of a second such system at Monticello. The advent of the cross-pit spreader system is viewed by Texas Utilities Mining Company as a viable solution to recovering deeper lignite reserves in a safe and economical manner.

The United States is being invaded... by foreign capital: marks, francs, pounds, yen, lire, riyals, you name it: On almost any given day the Wall Street Journal will contain a new report on a department store, newspaper, bank, hotel, agricultural land, supermarket chain, et a1 being bought into by overseas investment. Xenophobic reaction to this revised national condition has begun to set in. Several farming states have and are introducing legislation to monitor foreign land buying. In Congress a mandatory reporting requirement for foreign purchasing is currently under study. In a relatively short period the country has reverted from world leader- ship in overseas acquisition and involvement to become itself one of the prime investment opportunities in existence. Interestingly enough, one of the industries where this changed status has become most apparent and pronounced is within that small/regional/segmented/low value-to-weight bulk commodity enterprise ranked as the backbone of the nation&apos;s construction activity. U.S. cement making is not only undergoing internationalization in its ownership, but also in its product, equipment, and engineering expertise.

Exploration for SX-EW copper deposits and plant operation depend largely on the copper and gangue mineralogy inasmuch as? they govern the feasibility of leaching. Mineralogical parameters are pivotal in identifying if an ore is suitable to dump, heap, thin layer, vat or agitated leaching and/or if the ore requires curing, bioleaching or alternate lixiviants. Problems in metallurgical testing, production leaching and recovery forecasting are very often related to lack of mineralogical data. This presentation will illustrate the use of quantitative mineralogical analysis for exploration, acquisition assessment and optimization of copper leach operations.

In recent years, several geotechnical methods have been successfully applied to ash pond closure. These include modified dewatering techniques with wellpoints and wells to physically drain the material, soil mixing to create a soil-concrete material for improved accessways as well as improved ground structures within ponds to act as barriers or gravity dams, and geotechnical instrumentation to serve as an early warning of the potential for liquefaction. Given the parallels between fly ash and sluiced in place mine tailings, the application of fly ash remediation method to mine tailings shows significant potential, as illustrated in this paper.

The roof behaviour in room and pillar panels during the development of roadways and the subsequent pillar extraction was monitored underground and numerical simulations were conducted. For several underground sites, a satisfactory, correlation was found between underground measurements and three-dimensional numerical simulations using a boundary element code in the linear elastic domain. However, to simulate bed separation, and roof block collapses more complex models were required, of which examples are presented.

The so-called "construction aggregates," sand and gravel, crushed stone, and several kinds of metallurgical slags, are used principally in the construction and maintenance of all kinds of roads, engineering structures, buildings, homes, airports, etc. Production of these aggregates is approaching two billion tons annually. In terms of tonnage produced, sand and gravel has been the leading mineral since 1954, with crushed stone gradually approaching an equal tonnage. Sand and gravel is of widespread occurrence and of wide variation in suitable gradation and quality. It is a low-value, heavy-loading, short-haul commodity. These characteristics account for the historic concentration of production tonnage in and near urban areas where construction activities are concentrated. The combination of improved urban and near-urban highway systems and the steadily rising rail rates for short-haul traffic has fostered a consistent change since World War II from rail to truck transport, with trucks now accounting for more than 807 of the tonnage moving away from the production sites. While there are increasing numbers of exceptions, truck transport of sand and gravel is generally limited to about 30 miles. The expansion of the urban and near-urban areas of even moderate density, which became so pronounced after World War II, has been the source of most of the sand and gravel industry&apos;s environmental difficulties. Dust, noise and truck traffic associated with the operations -- particularly truck traffic -- have, of course, generated public complaint. This has been particularly true in those many cases where housing developments have approached and even surrounded sand and gravel operations which were in operation before the development started.

A working hypothesis is presented herein mineral belts are split as all world oceans opened. Rather than plate tectonics, expansion is favored as the most recent expression of the sequence of convecting systems in the Earth&apos;s mantle. Throughout the geological record this sequence has produced similar mobile belts. This similarity lends itself to both stratigraphic classification and the theme of mineralization in mobile belts demonstrated by Y. A. Bilibin. Crustal evolution should, therefore, serve as an important guide in understanding Pacific mineral belts.

Track-type tractors remain one of the most cost-efficient stripping tools available to coal miners. Whether they are "sweetening up" a dragline operation with prebenching or serving as the primary tool, dozers are important in driving down mining costs. This article reviews the application zone of track-type dozers. It also provides suggestions for site setup, equipping tractors and machine operation. In recent years, the track-type tractor has become more of a production tool in mining. With the advent of bigger machines, bulldozers have become a typical component in mining operations, removing overburden down to the top seam of coal. Large tractors can also be teamed up with draglines and other systems to maximize the effectiveness of the mining system. Bulldozers remain the tool of choice for topsoil removal, spoil reclamation or any application that demands low ground pressure, or short distance. The introduction of the 523-kW (700-hp) track-type tractor to the mining industry has made the bulldozer a low-cost-per-ton means of removing overburden. The large tractors offer enough productive capability to be considered prime stripping tools. And they can lower mining costs by complementing other mining systems (dragline, cast blasting and loader/truck). Four criteria determine whether a track-type tractor is the right machine for a particular application: ? Production requirements - dozer may fit job requirements better than a second dragline. [ ] ? Product support - availability of parts, service and technical expertise. ? Labor situation - how much of the cost per ton goes to the operator. ? Resale opportunity - recover a percentage of capital cost. Mining efficiency is economically controlling the cost of any system. Most operations rate the most economical means of moving material as cast blasting, dragline and the track-type tractor. All three of these systems share one common value: They are all sensitive to distance. Regardless of the application, all mining systems have an economic range. Exceeding this distance will affect cost and productivity.

Originally, the term solution mining applied to a dissolution, washing, or "brining" of soluble salts such as halite (common table salt), potash or trona. After the mid-sixties, however, the definition has been expanded to include heap and dump leaching, in-place (in situ) leaching, removal of oil from tar sands, extraction of sulfur from deep wells by the Frasch process and the recovery of metalliferous solutions from geothermal sources. Solution mining is also known as borehole, non-shaft, or chemical mining; the extraction of soluble mineral values from a variety of ores using appropriate solvents and chemicals. Solution mining frequently involves chemical changes; for example, copper usually goes into solution as copper sulfate, gold and silver as a cyanide compound, and uranium as a sulfate or uranyl tricarbonate. The valuable constituent is removed from the solid body of the ore by mass transfer to a aqueous solution.
