So far my consulting in industrial minerals has been confined principally to carbonate rocks,-salt, coking coal, and glass sand. Much of this work has been for companies either too small for a full-time geological staff or unaware of the value of employing one or more qualified geologists permanently. It gave me considerable personal satisfaction to see several of the latter companies employ one or two full-time geologists after the completion of a consulting contract with them. One possible reason why some companies lack the wisdom to hire geologists is that they are dominated by engineers who still subscribe to the old idea that engineers are self-sufficient in all fields. They could have learned this from their professors. I once knew a Dean of Engineering who got purple in the face when a faculty committee was discussing the financing of a broad gauged engineering project and suggestions were made that assistance be obtained from the Schools of Business and Law and from some of the science departments tie pounded the table and shouted "Engineers are trained to handle all this!" In teaching engineering geology some years ago I used to tell the class repeatedly that the course would not make them geologists, that the purpose was to teach them

Events of the mid-1970's have materially affected US coal production and transportation by railroad. Coal, as a replacement or substitute for petroleum fuels, has been hauled in significantly increased tonnages. Concurrent with the new demand, the railroad regulatory environment has undergone major changes, especially in "deregulation" activity. Those two events have produced considerable Litigation regarding coal rates. This paper discusses the factors involved with railroad rates and topics such as revenue adequacy, Ramsey Pricing, stand-alone cost, and differential pricing. In addition, an update on the western railroad merger situation and the implications for coal transportation are presented. The paper concludes with an evaluation of the current regulatory climate and future prospects.

In the past, health concerns in coal mines have primarily centered on those elements which have been essentially inherent to the mining environment. These would include respirable coal mine dust, respirable crystalline silica, excessive noise levels, and diesel exhaust particulates. Commercially-available chemical products are prevalent on mine property. These potentially toxic materials are chemical formulations that can degrease, clean, and lubricate metal parts, separate coal from rock in float/sink operations, and aid in roof consolidation, among other uses. As the general public has become more aware of the hazards of chemical exposures, miners have likewise become more concerned about working with an ever-expanding variety of chemical products on the job. Often, product or chemical specific hazard communication training is inadequate or ineffective, and miners do not know exactly what the ingredients are in the products they handle, or the health hazards involved with their use or misuse. Currently, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), by law, enforces 1972 Threshold Limit Values (TLV). MSHA is making preparations to adopt new personal exposure limits for enforcement. The values given throughout the article are 1994 TLV's and are not enforcement standards, but are used for discussion purposes. They reflect the current scientific thinking regarding personal exposure to these chemical agents. An overview of these products is presented, and the potential health hazards associated with their use are discussed. Controls needed to prevent overexposures, such as proper handling procedures and personal protective equipment, are covered. Methods used to collect and identify contaminants are presented.

Kaolin clay from Late Permian sequences has been considered a potential resource for niobium (Nb) due to high concentrations reported at several hundred micrograms per gram and large areal distribution. A previous case study identified titanium (Ti)-bearing minerals associated with kaolin clay as the main host phases for niobium. Correlation between the Nb and Ti concentrations was poor, however, and the types of Ti-bearing minerals and modes of Nb occurrence were unclear. To investigate this, typical kaolin clay samples from Late Permian sequences in southwest China were characterized, and final products derived from them were investigated using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The results revealed three types of titanium dioxide (TiO2) mineral phases in the clay samples: (1) massive TiO2 minerals, (2) aggregates of nano TiO2 minerals and (3) granular TiO2 minerals. The first two did not contain niobium. From the EDS analysis, the granular TiO2 minerals, including anatase and rutile, were the source of Nb in the kaolin clay samples.

As the existing major U.S. - Canada rail tunnel was too small to accommodate double-stack container cars, Canadian National Railways is constructing a new parallel tunnel with a 50% greater diameter. Starting in Sarnia, Ontario, the new shallow-cover bored tunnel runs under a large research building and several other structures in an oil refinery before travelling under the St. Clair River. Maximum predicted settlements to be caused by the 9.2 meter diameter earth pressure balance TBM in the soft St. Clair till were in excess of 100 millimeters. As such, these settlements had the potential to cause severe damage and disruption to the existing refinery. In order to reinforce the soft clays below the refinery research building and other structures, and to compensate for settlement caused by the tunnelling, the ground improvement method of Soil Fracture grouting was successfully applied for the first time in North America. This paper will describe the details of both the soil fracture grouting application and the elaborate electrolevel remote monitoring system used.

In 1966 Central Ohio Coal Company and Bucyrus-Erie signed a contract authorizing Bucyrus-Erie Company to design and build a 220 cubic yard dragline. This dragline would be used for stripping overburden from their coal reserves located near Cumberland, Ohio. The size of the machine was arrived at after a thorough application study of their annual coal output requirement, depth of overburden and type of terrain. The design and construction of this machine which has been designated by BECO as model number 4250-W is the title of this paper. Size wise based on machine weight the 4250-W represents an increase factor of three over our largest current dragline. Probably the easiest way of presenting a machine of this size is to build it from the bottom up.

In galena flotation, lead ethyl xanthate, Pb(EtX)2, is precipitated and is physically adsorbed in the form of multilayers on the chemically adsorbed first layer of Pb(EtX). 1,2) The solid particles are coated with layers of Pb(EtX)2 in heterogeneous manner over surface areas possessing both anodic and cathodic character (3,4) It is anticipated that the mode of formation of Pb(EtX)2 and the number of ions present, together with stable or unstable by-product species, have great influence on the surface characteristics of galena. The information obtained from a study of these parameters may have important practical applications in flotation. Lead ethyl xanthate is sparingly soluble in water. The metal and xanthate ions released to the aqueous solution during its dissolution undergo various types of reactions depending upon the pH values of the system. Extensive work (5,6) has been carried out to elucidate the mechanism involved in acid decomposition of xanthate ions. Different decomposition paths (7,8) have been proposed for the hydrolytic decomposition of xanthate in neutral and alkaline solutions, The concentrations of lead ions vary due to a number of chemical reactions, regulated by the pH and the temperature of the bulk phase. The hydrophobic character of Pb(EtX)2 may change with the nature of chemical reactions. Some of the numerous by-product species in solution may adsorb on the solid and change the properties of surface film either favourably or adversely. The flotation performance of galena, therefore, may depend to a considerable extent on the physical and chemical stabil¬ity of Pb(EtX)2 layers. Since little work has been reported in literature dealing with the stability of Pb(EtX)2 and its correlation with the flotation of galena, attempts have been made In this study to evaluate the behaviour of freshly formed Pb(EtX)2 in aqueous systems at various pH values.

Gypsum (CaSO4-2H2O) is an abundant and naturally occurring mineral. Under elevated temperatures (250 to 300°F) gypsum loses its crystalline water and is converted to hemihydrate (CaSO4 -0.5H2O). The hemihydrate form is also called plaster that is widely used in wall- board, joint compound, and many other industrial applications. At temperatures higher than 450°F (up to 1,200°F), gypsum loses all crystalline water and is converted to anhydrite form (CaSO4). The loss of crystalline water at elevated temperatures is an endothermic reaction. This property makes gypsum an attractive filler and fire retardant in certain thermosetting plastics. The applications of gypsum in plastics, food, pharmaceutical, and paper coatings will be reviewed in this paper. The future of synthetic gypsum, a by product of various industrial processes, will also be discussed.

This is the case history of how two nearby plants in Southwest Virginia solved their water clarification problems. While the solutions should not be considered applicable industry-wide, the methods used in arriving at the answers deserve consideration. When Clinchfield's Moss No. 2 Preparation Plant, the first ever built in Tiller Seam coal, was started in the fall of 1956, the clays in the raw coal soon posed a flocculation problem, Laboratory sedimentation tests were initiated; and as a result, lime was adopted as the flocculant for the clays, With lime, a pH of 11.2 was required. As the plant tonnage increased, it became evident that the amount of coal fines produced in the mining and preparation was greater than had been estimated and that the 90-foot thickener was inadequate in providing sufficient settling time to effect a clarified overflow for reuse. Testing showed that Separan 26105 (NP10)1/, when used with lime, was the most satisfactory coal flocculant available,

The concept of flying employees in and out of remote mine sites on a regular rotation basis, rather than establishing permanent support communities nearby, has gained increasing acceptance by mine operators, unions and regulatory agencies in Canada. The development of successful fly in/fly out programs and resultant compressed work schedules is dependent on meeting design requirements through comprehensive research of worker profiles to ensure the selection of suitable employees and the implementation of satisfactory working conditions. This paper presents an overview of Canadian mine industry practice with regard to the fly in/fly out mode of operation and compressed work schedules.

This paper presents a vision system capable of providing an accurate estimate for the volume of stockpiles using 2D images. By imaging a stockpile from multiple viewpoints with a two-camera system, a 3D point cloud of known scale is generated using image-based 3D reconstructions. With a small amount of user interaction, the points that correspond to the surface of the stockpile are extracted and used to measure the volume. The hardware required for the two-camera system is light enough to be carried by a small unmanned aircraft and is a cheaper alternative to LiDAR while still being competitive in terms of accuracy. When testing the volume measurement algorithm on a stockpile of known volume, the measured output was found to have less than a 3% error from the ground truth.

INTRODUCTION Coal gold agglomeration (CGA) is a new concept in gold processing. It involves the recovery of oleophilic (oil-loving) gold grains by causing them to adhere selectively to the surfaces of coal oil agglomerates. Under optimum conditions very high recoveries of gold. can be achieved. The agglomerates are recycled to build up gold loading to typically 1000 - 5000 g/tonne. Bullion can be produced by burning the loaded agglomerates with subsequent recovery of gold from the highly loaded ash either by dissolution/electrowinning or smelting. A wide-ranging programme of laboratory testwork has been performed to investigate the response of different ore types to the process. This has shown CGA to be most applicable to ores in which the gold is liberated or easily liberatable, relatively coarse (ca 500 µm) and fine (<5 µm) gold grains being recoverable with equal ease. The best opportunities for CGA seem to be: • placers containing fine gold not recoverable by gravity concentration • low grade gravity concentrates to avoid multiple magnetic/gravity separation stages and amalgamation • free milling ores where the gold can be liberated at a reasonable ore particle size eg >d80 50 µm • tailings past or present from gravity concentration plants. CGA testwork ranging in scale from laboratory to pilot plant on tailings produced by gravity concentration in the 19th century Australian gold rush has already been reported (Bonney, C F, 1988; House, C I, Townsend, I C and Veal, C J, 1988). An economic appraisal for a Canadian free milling gold ore has also been published (Buckley, S A, House, C I and Townsend, I G, 1989). This paper describes results of a detailed laboratory programme to assess CGA as a means of recovering gold from a beach sand deposit in New Zealand. The area from which the samples were taken consists of quarternary interglacial marine, lagoonal, fluvial and eolian deposits. The heavy minerals present are predominantly ilmenite and garnet and small concentrations of gold. In certain locations the sands and gravels are consolidated by a limonitic cement. In the 19th Century some parts of the deposit were mined and the ore processed using stamp milling and gravity concentration. Gold recoveries were low, probably below 50%, due primarily to the fine size of the gold grains, the flaky nature of the gold and also imperfect liberation by the stamp mills. Our laboratory testwork was divided into three parts: i) Preliminary studies on an initial sample to assess the feasibility of treating the ore by CGA ii) Extended studies on further samples from various locations in the deposit to confirm predictions from (i) iii) Conventional gold recovery techniques. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES All CGA tests were performed by agitating a slurry of ore in water in a 0.6 dm3 pyrex beaker fitted with four vertical baffles. When required, potassium amyl xanthate collector was added and the slurry conditioned for 5 min. Coal (ex BP Coal Australia&apos;s Tahmoor Colliery) previously ground to a d80 50 µm was added followed by a commercial grade of gas oil (density 840 kg/m3). The agglomeration time was 30 min. The agglomerates were separated from the tailings by screening, both were then dried and analysed for gold by fire assay. This test procedure provides a reasonably accurate estimate of gold recoveries that might be expected from our 1 tph pilot plant. A completed feasibility study executed by an independent agency can benefit a company in two ways. Inside the organization, it verifies the project staffs ideas and their concept of the facility. Outside the company, it can be utilized to obtain equity partners, debt financing, and other forms of credit. It is advisable to bring in a project execution contractor for the feasibility study. A project execution contractor is able to work with engineers to develop the project concept, process flowsheet, and best utilization of the site. By getting an early start on understanding a company&apos;s policies and working methods, a project execution contractor saves the company money since it does not have to go through the educational buildup twice. The contractor is a specialist in putting together a bankable document that can be taken to a financing source. It answers all the agency requirements on the first pass. In addition, the contractor can advise an owner on likely financing sources since he works on the worldwide market every day. A less obvious advantage of including the contractor in the study and predevelopment buildup stages is the importance of coordinating finance and technical input. The financing source influences equipment specifications, procurement, logistics, project schedule, cash flow, and liquidity. There are many surprises in store for any manager of a large international project involving worldwide financing and purchasing. The job does not have to be made more difficult by bringing in a contractor after all predevelopment steps are taken. The contractor can still work if the predevelopment steps have been done, even if he does not agree with them. But early contractor involvement is the preferable solution.

INTRODUCTION A current need of the phosphate industry is the development of process technology for treatment of high carbonate content ore. About 75 to 80 percent of the world phosphate reserves (1) are associated with carbonate gangue, which is not amenable to treatment by the existing techniques. Numerous laboratory and pilot plant studies have been devoted to carbonate-phosphate separation. Different techniques were involved (washing, sieving, attrition, flotation, calcination, and leaching). For technical and economical considerations, flotation appears to be an efficient process for this problem. Separation of carbonates (calcite and dolomite) from igneous phosphate is applied in industrial plants in Brazil, Finland, and South Africa. But, for sedimentary phosphate, no industrial realization exists at this time, with the possible exception of some plants in China. The main problems with sedimentary phosphates are: • high substitution by CO3-2 and F- for P04 -3 in the apatite lattice. • larger surface area of the phosphate particles because their surface is porous and irregular. • tendency of sedimentary minerals to produce more slimes in conditioning than the crystalline minerals, hence, larger dosages of collectors are required for sedimentary minerals. Investigations reported in the literature indicate that most processes developed for sedimentary carbonate-phosphate separation involved inverse flotation of carbonates using fatty acids as collectors (2), (3) associated with phosphoric acid (4), monosodium phosphate (5), F- (6), or SiF6 -2 (7) as phosphate depressants. Later investigations, conducted by A. Henchiri and G. Baudet (8), (9), (10), (11), (12), (13) in the BRGM technology department, of phosphoric esters revealed that these reagents are selective collectors for carbonate-phosphate separation. The above investigators developed a process which used phosphoric esters to collect carbonate minerals and sulfuric acid or sodium fluorosilicate as depressants for phosphate. Extensive comparative tests for different processes on the same phosphate sample show that the process developed at BRGM is one of the most promising methods proposed for sedimentary phosphate-carbonate separation. It should be pointed out, however, that phosphoric esters make abundant froths. The handling of these excessive froths will be a problem in an industrial-scale plant. This paper outlines test work performed in order to optimize and to improve the efficiency of the flotation process on a sedimentary phosphate ore selected from the Sra Ouertane orebody. The Sra Ouertane flotation process, illustrated on Figure 1, first removes carbonate minerals by inverse flotation and then recovers phosphate as a froth product, leaving quartz as a cell product.

During the past decade, over 114-km (71-mi) of 0.25-m (10-in) to 3.7-m (144-in) finished diameter tunnels have been driven below Metropolitan Houston as part of a major program of water and wastewater improvements. This large effort has seen the introduction of midwestern technology with over 18-km (11-mi) of man-entry pipe jacking and European and Japanese technology with over 21-km (13-mi) of microtunneling. Owing to the high water table; a stratigraphy consisting of stiff fissured clays containing numerous layers, channels, and lenses of water-charged sands and silts; and active faults, many challenges existed for designers and contractors alike.

INTRODUCTION In this paper, we are describing a current concept for placing intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) in sites deep underground to be used as a strategic Future Secure Reserve Force (FSRF). The objective of such concepts is to utilize soil and rock cover to protect high value strategic weapons from destruction by nuclear attack. The burial deep underground achieves two purposes. First, it imposes a miss distance upon the attacking weapon equal to the depth of burial minus any penetration capability the weapon might have. This tends to offset increasing accuracy of weapon delivery. The other purpose is to absorb as much of the weapon&apos;s energy as possible, thus reducing the effects of powerful weapons. This use of soil or rock cover over military facilities began with the development of man&apos;s capability to loft projectiles. Until recently, underground military installations, by their nature, performed defensive functions. Since they are not mobile and their weapons in the past had very limited range, an enemy would have to approach them before an engagement could take place. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) began research to improve the safety and efficiency of transporting coal from underground coal mines using a balanced air-lift hydrohoist (ALH). ALH includes a U-tube pipeline that can be installed through an existing shaft or two surface-drilled holes connecting the mine level to the surface. Bench- and pilot-scale models were tested to evaluate the feasibility of hydraulically hoisting a coal-water slurry in a riser pipe by injecting compressed air microbubbles. A prototype injector was developed that continuously compacted -50-mm (2-in.), run-of-mine coal in a screw feeder and injected a thick coal slurry into ALH. Initial production rates of 40 t/h (44 stph) through a 200-mm-(8-in.-) diam riser pipeline were achieved with a50-m- (165-ft-) high pilot-scale model. The potential productivity was expected to increase to 100 t/h (110 stph) through modification of the coal injector.

The availability of a fluid whose gross behavior sharply changes in a magnetic field without affecting its rheologic characteristics has been recently demonstrated. A colloidal solution of a ferrimagnetic material, such as magnetite, in a liquid that is immiscible with and lighter than water is projected for use in selective separation of particles according to their density spectrum in a continuous fashion. Magnetic levitation forces were created as an antigravity field when the fluid was properly placed in an inhomogeneous magnetic field. Five spherical non¬magnetic objects with densities ranging from 2.70 to 11.35 gram cm &apos; were made to float or submerge at will in a 0.96-gram cm-3 density fluid placed at vertical magnetic field gradients ranging from 0.2 to I kilooersted cm-1. The magnetic levitation farce in dyne cm-3 was found to vary linearly as a function of the object-fluid density mismatch with a slope equal to one g, the acceleration due to gravity.

Truck-shovel dispatch systems based on linear or nonlinear programming algorithms have been in operation since the mid-1980s, with different levels of success depending on the correct arrangement of operational resources and the complexity of the mine. These systems are known for shortcomings related to the logic behind the decision-making of the operational objectives. This makes it necessary to have a human agent (dispatcher) to guide the system when the operational parameters change, creating the possibility of suboptimal decisions due to the human factor. To address this issue, the present work discusses the implementation of a methodology based on artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to assist in the decision-making of the best optimization goals arrangement when operating a fleet management system. The focus of the analysis is on the evaluation of variable goal weights in a nonpreemptive, multigoal optimization model for multiple uncertain scenarios based on regions of optimal feasibility.
