The increasing public interest in a useful framework for an assessment and classification of mineral resources (1) is documented by the recently published international classification scheme of the United Nations (1979) and the revision of the classification system of USBM/USGS (2) (1980). Moreover, various classification systems are currently discussed by the mining industry. In spite of major improvements in respect of the concepts, definitions, and taxonomy of ore classification, it has been recognized that the recent practice to classify mineral resources does not create truly reproductible results, i.e. an assessment to the various categories which is free from personal bias or corporate interests. Following are geostatistical methods proposed for a standardization and quantification of various terms in ore classification. After critical review of present practices, we will establish a precise link between the classical terms such as "measured", "indicated", and "inferred" reserves and the geostatistical concept of estimation errors. Moreover, we will demonstrate, how the basic criteria of economic feasibility, geologic assurance and recovery can be taken into account by geostatistics. A specific algorithm will be proposed to block out and to classify reserves according to the degree of geologic assurance. . We will also show computerized methods which perform complete classification procedures, and will also exemplify them with typical case studies.

The use o f cyanide to extract gold from ores is widespread. In the process of extracting gold, cyanide may form metal cyanide complexes with a variety of other metals present in the ore. This study was carried out to investigate the biodegradation of the Cu(I)-cyanide complex and tetracyanonickelate under varying pH and nutrient additions. Detailed studies using shake flask cultures and bioreactors showed that naturally occurring bacteria residing on gold-leach-pad ore uti¬lized the Cu(I)-cyanide complex (CuCN) and tetracyano-nickelate, Na2(NiCN4), as carbon and/or nitrogen sources. Ammonium-nitrogen (NH4+-N) and/or cyanate (CNO-) accumulated in solution as the metal cyanide complexes were degraded. The accumulation of cyanate as a product is a concern due to its toxicity. Degradation rates were increased if a growth substrate (peptone, 0.1%) was added to the medium or if bioreactors were primed with peptone before addition of the metal-cyanide complex. Tetracyanonickelate was degraded at pH 8 without added peptone, but it was not degraded at pH 10. The addition of peptone was required for degradation of the Cu(I)-cyanide complex at pH 8 and pH 10. At pH 8, the addition of peptone resulted in the accumulation of cyanate, whereas, at pH 10, cyanate was not detected in the cultures. Biodegradation of metal-cyanide complexes was faster (approximately 1.5 to ten times faster) in bioreactors than in shake flask cultures. The addition of peptone was not required for degradation of metal-cyanide complexes in bioreactors. However, priming the bioreaetor with peptone resulted in higher metal-cyanide degradation rates over multiple cycles.

Compared to the traditional method of holding coal in railroad cars at the ports for dumping their contents into vessels, it provided for: a. Immediate train turn-around independently of vessel arrivals. b. Winter storage of coal at the port, permitting year round shipment by the mines and year round operation of the railroad.

The Ozarks has been called "a diamond in the rough". In this region streams have steep gradients, sparkling clear flows of cold water fed by many springs, and a wildness that is almost unique in the central part of the United States today. The Current River and its tributary, Jacks Fork, have been set aside for preservation by the National Park Service as a "Wild River" in the first park of its kind in the country. It is called the Ozark National Scenic Riverway. Similarly, responsibility for the preservation of the Eleven Point River has been assigned to the U. S. Forest Service. Protection of other streams in the Ozarks has been considered by State agencies. The hydrologic system of the Ozarks is a complex network of gaining and losing streams, caves, conduits, and large springs. Increased sewage loads derived from the growing towns and expanding tourist trade are a potential hazard; effluents may flow underground for long distances, polluting springs and wells. To add another dimension to the hydrologic picture a new lead industry is also flourishing in the Ozarks. Although the history of lead mining in the area goes back to 1701 (U. S. G. S., p. 43), the area has not seen a revitalization like the one that has been developing in the last 10 years; and the economic growth promises to continue indefinitely. Although this brings capital expenditures and wages into the area, it also brings potential hydrologic problems. Chemicals, wastes and other substances either stored on the surface or transported across it are subject to accidental spillage. In an area where these substances remain on the surface their effects are subject to surveillance. In the Ozarks, however, this may not be possible.

A computer program has been developed for use by the mining engineer for analyzing drum-type hoists prior to the modification of an existing system or the designing of a new one. Its use permits the preliminary evaluation of a system before seeking the technical assistance of mine hoist designers and manufacturers. Compatible with an IBM-PC, the user-friendly program accepts a variety of data and can analyze hoisting systems for any balance state. The extensive program can be used to: (1) calculate skip capacity to yield a desired production rate; (2) solve for required drum face width; (3) select a permissible wire rope from a menu of 50 available rope types: (4) estimate total horsepower of the hoist plant; and (5) estimate power cost. An example of the model's use in evaluating a hoisting system will conclude the paper.

The opportunity for an exploration geologist to follow a successful exploration project through the feasibility, financing, construction, development, and exploitation phase is rare. In addition, it is not often that the exploration geologist can be present during the mining of a deposit to explain why certain actions were taken or interpretations made, and to find out how these interpretations turned out in actuality. At the Woodsreef chrysotile asbestos mine in New South Wales, Australia, mining has been- in progress for seven years and the writer of this chapter has been intimately associated with the project during the five years of exploration and seven years of exploitation. The Woodsreef mine has had major production problems, the majority of which have stemmed from the unique characteristics of the ore body and fiber. Because of the latter feature, much research has been undertaken by Woods- reef and other scientific organizations in Australia, England, and Canada regarding the Woodsreef fiber. The answers to some of the problems have negated some accepted concepts of asbestos ore milling and led to the development of new techniques. Some of these new techniques include the adoption of microscopic fiber counts as a routine procedure, the modification of accepted evaluation procedures, the development of new machines for dedusting fibers, and the recognition of a fiber with a unique milling behavior pattern and, possibly, properties. The problems experienced can be broadly divided into those associated with the geology and the physical properties of the fiber. It is possible that the same features may manifest themselves in other deposits around the world, and if they can be recognized during the exploration stages, a feasiblity evaluation may be just a little closer to the actual. The Woodsreef chrysotile asbestos deposit (latitude 30°24' S, longitude 150°44' E) is located 80 km north of Tamworth, NSW, Australia. The mine has been in production for six years and has a present scheduled mining rate of 33.11 Mt/y. An eight rock line mill treats an average of 7000 t/day, after beneficiation, and yields fiber grades in the range of group 4 to group 6 with some floats. The estimated re- serves of 30.56 Mt, with an ore to waste ratio of 1:3.0, are contained in two main zones that are designated the North and South zones. Mining started in the South Zone in 1972 and then, be- cause of the higher ore value, moved to the North Zone in 1975. Presently, there are two distinct open cuts referred to as the South and North pits that will eventually be worked together. The Woodsreef mine is owned by Woodsreef Mines Ltd. and is operated by Chrysotile Corp. of Australia Pty. Ltd., and is one of only two producing asbestos mines in Australia. The second mine is at Baryulgil, (latitude 29°13' S, longitude 152°37' E), and is operated by a subsidiary of Woodsreef Mines Ltd. This operation produces about 500 t/y for a captive market. An exploration program is being conducted in the area surrounding this small producer with a significant degree of success. The concepts developed during the exploitation of the Woodsreef deposit are being incorporated in the evaluation of the Baryulgil area, and if the Baryulgil deposit proves to be eco- nomic it is hoped that this approach will eliminate some of the major crises that have beset the production at Woodsreef during the first four years of operation. Tafel curve technique and leaching tests have been applied to study the kinetics of gold leaching with thiosulfate. Results show that cupric ions and ammonia play the part of catalysts in the leaching of gold with thiosulfate. The activation energy of gold dissolution is calculated as 27.99 KJ/mol in the absence of both cupric ions and ammonia. However, the energy is reduced to 15.54 KJ/mol in a solution of 0.01 mol/L Cu (NH3)2 4* and 0. 5moVL total ammonia. The reaction order of Cu (NH,) g is one in the range of 0.001~0.1mol/L. These results support the electrochemical-catalytic mechanism pro- posed by the authors and explains the behavior of cupric ion and ammonia (Jiang Tao, et al., 1993)

This paper describes the development of a modified Goodman Jack method for determining the mechanical properties of rock masses in situ. The modified method consists of the basic borehole loading device and a friction-strain-gauge measuring module. The friction gauges, located in the central portion of the jack, are impressed on opposite quadrants of the borehole walls and the remaining quadrants are loaded by the borehole jack with a uniaxial self-equilibrating pair of forces. The tangential strains generated at the borehole walls are thus measured concurrently with the loading. For ideal elastic materials, the tangential stresses at any point on the borehole walls due to jack loading can be obtained from closed-form analytical solutions utilizing the complex variable method. Complete stress-strain curves for the rock material can then be directly obtained from the tangential strain measurements and the calculated tangential stresses at those points. The continuous data are considerably more significant and reliable than averaged or point data obtainable by other current in situ measuring techniques. Moreover, the advantages inherent to the original Goodman Jack method are also obtainable in the modified method. The suitability of the new method was demonstrated by carrying out a number of laboratory measurements in large specimens of reinforced concrete, aluminum and granite blocks. The results of actual field measurements carried out in sandstone and granite quarries were found comparable with those obtained in the laboratory.

Clays for building bricks and roofing tiles in Chile are classified as common clays and ball clays, with deposits of sedimentary and residual origin, both Cenozoic in age. Deposits are known from north to south, through 11 of the 13 Chilean Administrative Regions, 18° to 39° South latitude, and from west to east, through three of Chile's main geomorphic features, namely the Coastal Plains, Coastal Range, and Intermediate Depression. Alluvial and lacustrine sedimentary common clay deposits are located in the northern and southern Intermediate Depression. The average chemical composition of clay deposits in I and I1 Regions, is 58 percent Si02, 16 percent A1203, and 4 percent Fe203 by weight; the primary minerals are sericite, quartz, feldspar, and albite. The average chemical composition of clays in Metropolitan, VI, and VIII Regions, is 52 percent Si02, 16 percent A1203, and 6 percent Fe203 by weight; the primary minerals are montmorillonite, quartz, and plagioclase. Residual common clay deposits occur in the Intermediate Depression and in the Coastal Range internal basins, VII, VLII, and IX Regions, and they represent surficial alteration of pumice beds and crystalline rocks. The average chemical composition of clay deposits derived from crystalline rocks is 58 percent SO2, 17 percent A1203, and 9 percent Fe203 by weight; the primary minerals are sericite, quartz, and clinochlore. Clay deposits formed from pumice beds contain 47 percent Si02, 24 percent A1203, and 10 percent Fe203 by weight; the primary minerals are kaolinite, feldspar, and cristobalite. Sedimentary ball clay deposits are located in the Coastal Plains and Coastal Range, VI, VII, VIII, and IX Regions, between 34" and 39" South latitude. The average chemical composition of the ball clay deposits is 51 percent ,902, 28 percent A1203, 5 percent Fe203 by weight; the primary minerals are kaolinite, quartz, and sericite (illite?). These clay deposits supply the Chilean building sector with over one million metric tons (mt) (1.1 million short tons [st]) of material per year. The average growth rate of clay consumption during the period 1993 through 1997 was 10 percent annually. The clays are used by both mechanized plants and handcraft facilities.

The purpose of this study was to seek and evaluate possible relationships between the composition of coal refuse, as expressed by washability data, and factors affecting the product ion of a lightweight aggregate from refuse by bloating. The study was related to an intense program in the Department of Mineral Preparation at the Pennsylvania State University to study the possible elimination of air pollution from coal refuse fires by producing a low- carbon secondary refuse. Another phase of this program is considering possible uses of such a secondary refuse. Thus one study was to determine if a lightweight aggregate could be produced from this new refuse material and what effect the nature of refuse beneficiation would have upon the characteristics of a commercial aggregate product.

Based on the classical definition of optimization, flotation plants of today are far from being perfect, effective, or functional as possible. Though considerable efforts have been expanded in the optimization endeavor during the last decade, much more needs to be done in the future to optimize our flotation plants and operations. The major problem in designing an optimum flotation circuit is that the flotation process depends on the interaction of several physical and chemical parameters. In the past, there has been a tendency to only consider the effects of chemical factors such as flotation reagents: collectors, frothers, conditioning reagents, pH, etc. On the physical side, the emphasis has been limited to the liberation characteristics, grinding time, percent, solids in the pulp and flotation time. Its only recently that we are employing particle size analyses, on-stream analysis, oxidation reduction potential and the like, as operating controls. The design, operation and control of a mineral processing plant depends on costs incurred at all stages, from inception (testing for flowsheet development) through plant closure and beyond. To ensure that micro- and macro- engineering technology is transferred to operational levels, the academia, testing engineers, designers, operators, consultants and management must all get involved in the transformation process. Historically, in the 1950’s engineering empiricism was strengthened through micro-engineering based on fundamental and mechanism. Unique scientific apparatus such as zeta meter and infrasizer were used to test new hypotheses. With the advent of computers in the 60s and 70s, complex differential equations were solved to study and understand unit processes and to assess mechanism assumptions. Such efforts contributed to improved understanding of the unit operations such as comminution, flotation, thickening, filtration and the like. In the 80s and 90s with the availability of more sophisticated computer technology involving modeling procedures, advanced numerical methods, image analysis, nonlinear-curve-fitting and data adjustments, it was possible to test newly developed models under the production environments. These innovations are now available to develop simulator and sensors (such as particle size analyses) for macro-engineering purposes including plant design, automatic controls and optimization. Accordingly, it behooves the mining companies and plant operators to take advantage of these new developments to control a large number of physical and chemical parameters involved in the plant operation and optimization. This is especially important in light of declining head grades and increasing operating costs in the U.S. minerals industry if it wishes to maintain a competitive edge in the international marketplace. In regard to the future R & D activities in the field, in order to arrive at useful correlations in micro- engineering research, it is essential to consider a plant operation as an interactive engineering system representing the combined effects of physics and chemistry, equipment and operation. Many mining engineers tend to think of the economic analysis of mining ventures and projects on an f.o.b. mine basis. This is especially true of mines that are operated in an established domestic mining district. Here, transportation costs are many times smaller in comparison to overall delivered prices. One has only to consider the development economics of taconite mines in Minnesota with production destined for lower lake ports to see the truism of this statement. In the international arena, however, with consumers such as Japan and Europe located thousands of miles from source countries such as Brazil and Australia, the situation is different because mineral transportation is often a critical factor in determining project viability. This article is being presented to provide a basic understanding of the factors that govern ocean transportation of the three largest bulk mineral commodities shipped around the world: iron ore, coal, and phosphate. The major dry bulk commodity trades as a percentage of volume shipped are iron ore, 45%; grain, 25%; coal, 20%; phosphate rock, 5%; and bauxite and aluminum, 5%. Most of these commodities are carried by bulk carriers rather than tankers. These are vessels that have cargo, usually in solid form, loaded directly into the hold of a vessel by shore-side materials handling facilities or, in the case of a geared bulk carrier by the vessel's cranes and derricks. Gearless bulk carriers are used in most cases for iron ore and coal. Geared bulk vessels are mainly used for minor dry bulk trades such as ore concentrates (copper, lead, zinc, etc.), fertilizers (phosphate, potash, etc.), cement, petroleum, and coke. There has been, however, a trend toward using more self-unloading ships in both iron ore and coal ocean transport. And large vessels, such as the Universe Kure of Japan, have been designed with a cargo capability of 157 kt (155,000 dwt (deadweight tons)). Trade patterns of major bulk commodities are influenced by the Panama and Suez canals. Both of these canals have draft limitations that prohibit large, deep-draft, ocean-going vessels from using them for shorter trade routes used by Panamax and Suex vessels. The shipping industry has developed two widely used vessel classes; the Panamax and Suex vessels. The former is the maximum size vessel that can pass through the Panama Canal, usually 51-61 kt (50,000 - 60,000 dwt), depending on the season and draft of the vessel. The Panama Canal is usually 0.6-0.9 m (2-3 ft) deeper in the winter than in the summer. Thus, less cargo can be carried by the same size ship in the summer through the canal than in the winter. The Suex vessel is in the 71-81 kt (70,000-80,000 dwt) class. This larger vessel is able to transit the Suez since Egypt deepened the canal following the Seven Days War. Recently, the Suez Canal has been deepened to accommodate vessels with drafts as deep as 152 kt (150,000 dwt).

INTRODUCTION The Chimney Creek Gold Mine (Gold Fields Operating Co. - Chimney Creek) is located 47 miles northeast of Winnemucca, Nevada, at the northern end of the Osgood Mountains. The operation is a wholly owned subsidiary of Gold Fields Mining Corporation, the North American branch of Consolidated Gold Fields PLC, London, England. The plant started up in November, 1987, less than three years after discovery of the orebody and three months ahead of schedule. Ore is mined in an open pit and is processed by combined dump leaching and milling techniques for gold and silver recovery. The mine is set to produce approximately 150.000 ounces of gold and 50,000 ounces of silver per year over a 12 year life at current reserve estimations. The mine was designed and constructed at a cost of $79.3 million with engineering and construction services provided by Davy McKee Corporation, San Ramon, California. Key Gold Fields operating staff were involved in the design of the facility from the start of the project: The Mine Manager, Plant Superintendent, Plant General Foreman, Maintenance General Foreman and Chief Metallurgist were all involved full time on the project within 5 months of the first ore discovery. Emphasis was directed at optimizing operating efficiency and in particular minimizing labor costs in the plant. It was recognized that a high level of instrumentation and control would be required to achieve this. The risk associated with the instrumentation and control systems implemented was to be minimized by using equipment and systems that had been proven in industry while utilizing the most cost effective, state-of-the-art technology available. The reliability of the overall control system was considered to be critical in view of the cost of downtime associated with the gold extraction plant. BRIEF PROCESS DESCRIPTION The dump leaching process treats approximately 1.2 million tons per year of low grade ore at an average grade of 0.035 oz/ton. Run of mine material is dumped on a lined leach pad and weak cyanide solution is applied by drip irrigation. Pregnant solution run off is pumped to carbon columns in the milling plant for gold recovery and the barren solution returned to the dump leach circuit. Average gold recovery is 60%. This process has little instrumentation and control associated with it. The milling operation treats 700,000 tons annually of higher grade ore (0.200 oz/ton initially, dropping to an average of 0.135 oz/ton after first two years). Recovery is directly related to head grade (fixed tail assay effect) and currently averages 96%. A single pass through a jaw crusher reduces run of mine ore to minus 12 inches. The ore is stockpiled and reclaimed by loader for grinding in a two-stage milling circuit consisting of a SAG mill and ball mill, the latter in closed circuit with hydrocyclones. Cyanide and lime are added into the SAG mill to start dissolution of gold as early as possible in the circuit. The ground product leaves the milling circuit at approximately 78% minus 200 mesh and is fed to an unique "double thickener" leaching-recovery circuit. This circuit has been discussed in detail in a paper by J. G. Mansanti et a1 (1). Two thickeners are arranged in counter- current configuration with three leach tanks. Overflow solution from the first thickener is treated by carbon-in-columns (CIC) for gold recovery with 85% of the soluble gold recovered onto this carbon. Underflow slurry from this thickener is pumped to the leach tanks, with a total retention time of 12 hours, and then gravitates to the No. 2 thickener. Overflow solution from the second thickener is used as a wash in the first thickener. Underflow slurry from the second thickener is treated in a carbon-in- pulp (CIP) scavenging circuit to recover the remaining 15% dissolved gold. Gold-loaded carbon from both the dump leach and milling circuits is stripped in batches using the Zadra hot caustic- cyanide elution process. Gold (and silver) is recovered from the hot strip solution by precipitation with zinc dust and the product recovered on Funda pressure filters. The precipitate is retorted to remove any mercury and then smelted into buttons. The buttons (approximately 80% gold, 15% silver) are shipped to an independent refiner in Salt Lake City, Utah, for further treatment.

Mixers play an important function in the operation of multi-phase reactors in the minerals processing industry. They must suspend solids, transfer oxygen, maintain pH and temperature uniformity, assist in heat transfer, and, in biological processes, avoid the development of excessive shear rates. The LIGHTNIN A315 impeller (Figure 1) effectively supersedes the older Rushton turbine (Figure 2) which has been classically employed in gas­Iiquid-solids applications such as bacterial oxidation, cyanide destruction, etc. Since a stirred tank reactor can be such a key part of the overall process, it is essential that the mixers be designed for long term reliable operation, both process and mechanical, to insure a high percentage of on-line availability. Mixers in gas-liquid-solids processes may experience extraordinary loading conditions which must be taken into account to guarantee a robust mechanical design. Given the recent trend towards the design of world-class process units with maximum capacity equipment, there is increased importance and emphasis on the integrated design of the complete agitation system -mixer, vessel, and structure -to insure trouble free, post­commissioning performance. This paper presents some of the considerations necessary to specify the process functions of the mixer in multiphase applications, as well as special considerations for the mechanical design of the integrated reactor system.

Nevada is especially well endowed with industrial minerals, both in the number of ore deposits and the diversity of commodities. More than 600 significant industrial mineral deposits, containing 22 principal commodities, are present, in the State. The materials produced in Nevada in 1978 had a value of approximately 113 million dollars, and additional processing of some of them (e.g. gypsum into wallboard, limestone and clay into cement) added considerable more value. Table 1 shows the value of Nevada's industrial mineral production in 1978. Nevada currently supplies 85 percent of the country's barite producing 1.6 million tonnes (1.8 million short tons) valued at 30 million dollars in 1978. Nevada is second in diatomite production and contributes one-third of total lithium produced. Other industrial minerals being produced include clays, fluorspar, gypsum, lightweight aggregates, limestone and dolomite, magnesite and brucite, perlite, salt, sand and gravel, and silica. In general, Nevada produces high-value industrial minerals which are not consumed within the State, but rather, are shipped out of State. In contrast, most more populous states produce larger tonnages of lower value industrial minerals which are consumed chiefly within that state.

The former mayor of Los Angeles, CA is a believer in public transportation but thinks neither his city nor the entire country is spending enough on basic infrastructure. In fact, the United States has fallen behind most other developed nations in improving public transportation, the former mayor said. Antonio R. Villaraigosa was the keynote speaker at the North American Tunneling (NAT) conference, held June 22-25 in Los Angeles, CA. The event, held every two years, is sponsored by the Underground Construction Association of SME (UCA). This years? conference attracted 1,091 underground construction professionals from around the world. The accompanying exhibition continues to grow, attracting 142 exhibiting companies occupying 162 booths. As always at NAT, registered attendees received the proceedings volume of the conference, which contains 132 papers. Mill flotation tailings impounded at the Gooseberry Mine site between 1976 and 1984 were determined to be an economic source of gold and silver. The tailings would be recoverable by standard heap leach technology in conjunction with feed agglomeration. Metal recovery at 85% gold and 75% silver is attained on properly agglomerated (pelletized) tailings that average 85% -75 µm (-200 mesh). The impounded tailings averaged more than 18% moisture (32% moisture maximum at depth) in place behind the storage dam. Therefore, the mining method, mixing and agglomeration technique, and materials handling practice were major considerations in making this operation a financial success. The Gooseberry Tailings Project is located about 35 km (22 miles) east of Sparks, NV. The project is owned by Asamera Minerals (US) Inc. The company's Western Nevada Gold prop¬erty surrounds the Gooseberry Mine by several miles on all sides. Gold and silver mineralization at the Gooseberry Mine is restricted to a narrow calcite-quartz vein. Calcite makes up more than 80% of the vein throughout the mine. The host rock consists of porphyritic andesites and dacites constituting volcanic flows. The rocks are propylitized or silicified to a varying degree. This ore mineralogy, then, also describes the tailings processed by heap leaching. The Gooseberry tailings were auger sampled in 1983 and again in 1987 after a final lift of 109 kt (120,000 st) was deposited in 1983 and 1984. The total volume behind the dam was calculated from planimeter measurements from tailings surface to original area topography.

In July 1985, as the U.S. copper industry contracted and the Mexican industry expanded, a trans border pollution agreement was signed which included smelter air pollution control in the "Gray Triangle": Cananea, Nacozari and Douglas. Since then the Douglas smelter has been closed, a year earlier than initially required; though its new smelter is operating, S02 collection and acid disposal at Nacozari is yet to come; and the Cananea smelter has been un-touched. Nacozari and Cananea copper mining have expanded while a reduced U.S. copper industry has rationalized to a point of fragile profitability. As a paradigm of U.S. copper competitiveness, this paper attempts to explain the differential fortunes of copper in the two countries, to project the future of the smelter agreement as a function of acid disposal, and to consider the consequences of the politicized application of smelter pollution control in Arizona.

An auxiliary cross-pit mining system, working in tandem with the prime excavator, is evaluated technically, operationally and economically for application in the selective removal and replacement of soils and unconsolidated ovezburden. Previous studies on cross-pit technology and applications of this technology are briefly reviewed. Stratigraphy plus pit, operating and economic parameters are assumed and applied in the evaluation and comparison of a base case dragline system with two alternatives - a dragline/scraper-dozer combination and a drag- line/cross-pit system combination. The economics of the proposed cross-pit system favour it as a viable alternative to conventional systems.

The paper describes the replacement of a conventional filtration, clarification and zinc precipitation plant by a carbon in pulp (CIP) electrowinning plant, with the objective of improving the recovery of gold from cyanide leached, acid plant calcines. The discussion covers the early laboratory studies to the design and erection of the full scale plant. Particular emphasis is placed on the problems encountered with commissioning and the strategies which were employed to solve them.
