Introduction Based upon the 1980 Bevill Amendment to the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), a 1986 Regulatory Determination decision, and subsequent rulemakings, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) exempted all extraction and beneficiation wastes and twenty mineral processing wastes from regulation under RCRA Subtitle C (hazardous waste) regulations. These twenty mineral processing waste streams were studied in a 1990 Mineral Processing Report to Congress. For purposes of regulatory classification, EPA made special distinctions between extraction/beneficiation and mineral processing. Wastes determined by EPA to be from the extraction/beneficiation of ores and minerals retain the exemption, while wastes found to be mineral processing, except for the “special" twenty mineral processing wastes, fall within RCRA Subtitle C jurisdiction. For those wastes that are subject to RCRA Subtitle C, § 3004(m) of RCRA requires EPA to set levels or methods of treatment, of any, which would substantially diminish the toxicity of the waste or substantially reduce the likelihood of migration of hazardous constituents from the waste so that short- term and long-term threats to human health and the environment are minimized. These treatment standards are developed by EPA under the Land Disposal Restrictions (LDR) program. Under § 3004(g) (4) of RCRA, EPA is required to promulgate treatment standards for any waste that is newly identified or listed as hazardous. As part of the settlement agreement in Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) v. Reilly and Chemical Waste Management, Inc. v. EPA (1992), EPA has agreed to propose a rule by June 30, 1995 and promulgate a final rule by June 30, 1996. This rule is commonly referred to as the "Phase IV" LDR rule and will address newly identified mineral processing wastes. Other wastes that will be addressed in this rule include newly listed dyes and pigments and wood preserving wastes. Therefore, in the Phase IV rule EPA will develop treatment standards for all mineral processing wastes that have lost their Bevill exclusion. EPA is currently collecting information on the waste characterization, treatment alternatives, and disposal capacity data currently available on these wastes. "INTRODUCTION This paper addresses the prevalence of poor public reporting practices of Coal Exploration Results, Coal Resources and Coal Reserves in southern Africa. Currently, the reporting of coal tonnage without supporting coal qualities or “saleable” tonnes and quality is a poor reporting practice that occurs far too often. Not all coal is equal – therefore it is extremely important that investors or potential investors are provided with the full details of both run-of-mine (“ROM”) and Saleable coal tonnage, their associated qualities and other material and relevant information. Competent or Qualified Persons should note that publicly reported information should be sufficient to enable an informed reader to make a reasonable and balanced assessment of the significance of the information provide. “Companies are encouraged to provide information in their Public Reports, which is as comprehensive as possible” (CRIRSCO, 2013): too often this isn’t the case and material matters are either not reported or inadequately disclosed. According to the South African National Standard (SANS) 10320:2014 draft document - “tonnage and coal quality that will be available for sale, either in the raw ROM state (raw Saleable) at a specified moisture content, or after beneficiation of the ROM coal by processing operations to produce materials at specified qualities, size ranges and moisture contents. The assessments must demonstrate that at the time of reporting, the marketing of the products is reasonably justified. The basis of the predicted practical product yield to achieve the Saleable Coal Reserve must be stated. The moisture basis of reporting shall be stated.” As an example to why coal qualities are so important to the public, the requirements of South Africa’s electric public utility (Eskom) power stations are highlighted. The Kendal power station, commissioned in 1988, operates at a Calorific Value (“CV”) range of 19 to 20MJ/kg, an Ash content between 29 and 34% and Volatiles between 20 to 21%. Other power stations, such as Kriel or Hendrina, may require different qualities such as a CV range of 22 to 23MJ/kg, an Ash content between 20 and 28% and Volatiles between 22 to 23%. Thus, in terms of domestic saleable coal, it isn’t just about reporting the coal qualities but also informing the investor as to which power station the coal is intended to be sold as “boilers are designed to burn particular qualities of coal” and “it is not always possible to transfer coal between stations because of different quality requirements at each station” (Chetty, 2010). Sulphur content is also another important quality with the ideal coal content having a quality of less than 1% Sulphur."

Through a joint development program between Bougainville Copper Ltd. and Nordberg, the MP1000 cone crusher was developed and tested during the period between 1982 and 1987. Following the successful prototype work, Bougainville Copper purchased an additional three units. A second prototype was installed at Codelco's El Teniente three-stage crushing installation in 1987. This unit has also completed its test period successfully. Three additional units have been sold, making a total of eight, to date. Two will be installed as secondary crushers in two separate large aggregate plants. The first unit installed in the United States was placed in operation at Vulcan Materials Company's plant in Manassas, Virginia in early May 1990. Another unit is being installed in Asarco's Ray Mines expansion. The Asarco installation will be a SAG MILL pebble crusher producing approximately 600 STPH of nominal 1/2" product. Application Objective The objective was to design a crusher that would fit on an existing 7' foundation with minimum modification and yet be capable of twice the production of a 7' cone crusher. In meeting this objective, the power rating was increased to 1000 HP, the maximum design crushing force was increased and the crusher was designed to operate at higher speeds than an equivalent size Symons cone crusher. The MP1000 was also designed to operate with a head throw that can be greater than the equivalent Symons design. For most geologists and miners the term asbestos refers to a group of highly fibrous silicate minerals that readily separate into long, thin, strong fibers of sufficient flexibility to be woven; these fibers are heat resistant and chemically inert, and possess a high electric insulation and therefore are suitable for uses where incombustible, nonconductive or chemically resistant material is required. The US Mining Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) specifically refers to the naturally occurring minerals chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, termolite asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, and actinolite asbestos as asbestos if the individual crystal fragments have the following dimensions: length-greater than 5 µm; maximum diameter-less than 5 µm; and a length to diameter ratio of 3 or greater. Since asbestos has been identified as one of the ten most carcinogenic substances (a cancer-causing agent), it has become, for many government regulatory agencies, a major issue concerning banning emissions to the environment. Very few recent issues have caused as much concern for the crushed stone industry as asbestos. Complicating the problem is the fact that several federal and state bureaus have greatly compounded the confusion because each has become involved in the asbestos dilemma. Simple solutions to a very complex problem have been proposed by these various governmental groups. In addition to governmental bungling is the fact that public interest groups have been able to use federal and state laws that have been enacted with a strong environmental bias to foment even greater complexities. Such is now the state of the asbestos problem. No con- firmed health risk has been associated with low-level exposure, namely crushed stone in an unbound form; a methodology for sampling and analyzing for asbestos has not been developed; a precise definition of what is asbestos does not exist, nor does a concensus among the various government groups as to what course of action to pursue. Pure asbestos as it is mined for commercial purposes does not exist in the properties mined by the crushed stone industry. Where the six asbestiform minerals do appear (to date we've been referring mainly to chrysotile in serpentinite formations in Maryland) the amount of the asbestiform mineral present is generally quite small. They generally appear in scattered, miniscule amounts. In the case of Rockville Crushed Stone in Montgomery county, Mary- land, the chrysotile is less than 1/2 of 1% of the rock deposit. No health risk has been identified with such minute quantities of asbestos minerals. MSHA standards for the occupational health and safety of quarry workers are being met; and there is every indication that normal background levels of asbestos, throughout the surrounding countryside, are as high or higher than levels measured on roads where the rock is used in pavement or base. The problem and the controversy lie with improper terminology on the part of so-called public interest environmental groups, aided and abetted by some governmental agencies who, to be charitable, we can best describe as uninformed. The news media frequently has fanned the issue, unintentionally we'd like to think, by quoting these misinformed authorities and not bothering to question the facts or adequately report balancing information handed to them. It is much better copy to talk about an asbestos cancer scare, than to deal with rather mundane measurements and descriptions that are hard to understand. At the heart of the issue is the improper use of the word asbestos. Instead of being confined to the geological description of the six asbestiform minerals-chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, termolite asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, and actinolite asbestos-the word asbestos is also wrongly used, but too-frequently to identify many other minerals that happen to have elon-

The well-known method of C. Schlumberger, Mise a la masse, has become a popular method again in ore exploration in Norway after many years of dominance by EM methods. The principle of the method is to place a current electrode within a conducting ore body and remove the other electrode to a great distance. (Figure 1). Often it is convenient to place a return electrode on each side of the area explored. The method is best suited for ores that have a conductivity contrast, relative to the host rock, of several orders of magnitude. The potential drop within the ore itself may then be neglected and the ore contact against the rock may be regarded as an equipotential surface. One may say that the ore body is electrically charged. Therefore, in Norway the method is now most often called the Charged Potential Method (abbreviated CP). The most usual way to present data obtained by CP, is to draw equipotential lines based on potential values measured in profiles on the surface. Such a potential map gives an immediate picture of the outcrop of the ore and also indicates disturbing conductors in the neighborhood. It may also be useful to look at the potential profile and its horizontal gradient along the strike axis of the potential map. These profiles may give information about the strike length of the conductor. Figure 2 shows the theoretical profiles of potential and gradient along the axis of the potential picture on the surface over a charged line plunging 15 degrees. It may be seen that the maximum of the gradient curve clearly indicates the lower end of the conductor. Figure 3 shows the corresponding pro- files over a charged line plunging 45 degrees. In this case, it is not possible to see an indication on the curve of the lower end. Only curve fitting could help interpretation in this case.

This chapter on the square-set system of mining em¬bodies the results of a special study of the subject made as a part of the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) general investigation of mining methods and costs. Data for the chapter were gathered by the authors during visits to mines using square-set mining, from information circu¬lars prepared by consulting engineers to the USBM on mining methods at individual mines, and from articles in the technical press and the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. Al¬though some of the properties discussed are no longer in operation, the methods described are still valid. The square-set system of mining has been very widely applied and is one of the oldest methods in use in the US. It is mainly employed for extracting rela¬tively high-grade ore in heavy ground. It is also useful in taking out pillars left in mining by other methods. It is used to some extent as an auxiliary method with many underground systems and as an alternate with cut-and¬fill, shrinkage, and open-stope methods when heavy ground is encountered. In some cases as much as 50% of the ore may be extracted by square setting at mines listed as using some other method of mining. A large tonnage has been mined yearly by square setting, prin¬cipally in the western states. Due to the high cost of timber and the relatively low average production per manshift, this system generally is not used when the ore can be mined by some other method; it usually is adopted as a last resort. Square setting, however, has a special field in that ore bodies not minable by other methods can be stoped by this system. As square-set mining was widely known, there was a tendency for years to use the method regardless of its suitability. With the increasing need for economy and the development of other methods, square setting has been superseded in many mines by cut-and-fill, top slic¬ing, or sublevel caving methods. The term square-set mining as used in this chapter includes all stoping methods in which the space made by the removal of the ore is timbered with framed sets. The sets usually are square in horizontal section. The stope may or may not be filled with waste rock as stoping progresses. HISTORY OF THE SQUARE-SET SYSTEM Prior to 1860, open-stope methods with stulls for casual support accounted for most of the mineral pro¬duction from underground mines. Attempts to mine large ore bodies that required artificial support resulted in disastrous cave-ins and loss of life. The art of mining received a tremendous impetus following the introduc¬tion of methods for mining the bonanza ore body which was discovered in 1860 in the Ophir mine on the Comstock lode, Virginia City, NV. This ore body was phe¬nomenally rich and eventually proved to be 122 m (400 ft) high, 27 m (90 ft) wide, and 98 m (320 ft) long. The mining of this large high-grade ore body taxed the best engineering talent of the time; the problem was finally solved by Philip Deidesheimer. According to Eliot Lord (1882): "At the 50-foot level the vein of black sulphurets was only 3 or 4 feet thick, and could be readily extracted through a drift along its line, propping up the walls and roof when necessary by simple uprights and cap-posts. As the ledge descended the sulphuret vein grew broader until, at the depth of 175 feet, it was 65 feet in width, and the miners were at a loss how to proceed, for the ore was so soft and crumbling that pillars could not be used to support the roof as in coal mines. They spliced timbers together to hold up the caving ground; but these jointed props were too weak and ill-supported to with¬stand the pressure upon them, and were constantly broken and thrown out of place. The dilemma was a curious one. Surrounded by riches, they were yet un¬able to carry them off and their mass of black sulphurets bade fair to become a white elephant on their hands. The Ophir Company began to wish themselves less for¬tunate, as their miners narrowly escaped burial day after day in their attempts to stope out the ore. "A young mining engineer, Philip Deidesheimer, was in charge of a quartz mine in Georgetown, El Dorado County, Calif., in the autumn of 1860, when this serious check to the development of the lode occurred. At the request of William F. Babcock, a trustee of the Ophir Company, Mr. Deidesheimer left his California mine and crossed the mountains with a letter from the direc¬tors of the Ophir Company, authorizing him to inspect the workings of their mines and make such changes in the method of timbering as should seem to him expe¬dient. After examining the vein he designed, in the course of a few weeks, a system of timbering which proved to be exactly adapted to the requirements of the work. Experiments which he had previously made in California gravel and quartz mines furnished the out¬line of his plan. This was to frame timbers together in rectangular sets, each set being composed of a square base, placed horizontally, formed of four timbers, sills, and crosspieces from 4 to 6 feet long, surmounted at the corners by four posts from 6 to 7 feet high, and capped by a framework similar to the base. The cap pieces forming the top of any set were at the same time the sills or base of the next set above. These sets could readily be extended to any required height and over any given area, forming a series of horizontal floors, built up from the bottom sets like the successive stories of a house. The spaces between the timbers were filled with waste rock or with wooden braces, forming a solid cube when¬ever the maximum degree of firmness was desired. By adjustments of these sets the ore bodies along the line of the lode were extracted with comparative ease and security." Most mining methods are evolved slowly and are the result of the combined efforts of a number of minds; Deidesheimer's feat was remarkable in that his system was immediately successful. For the last few years, the grinding model first proposed by Andrews and Mika (1975) has regained attention from the scientific community. Though sophisticated identification algorithms have been developed, the number of its parameters that have to be estimated remains huge. Most of these constants (often more than 90%) are for the breakage function. This paper describes a new method for reducing efficiently the number of the breakage function parameters of the Andrews-Mika grinding model. It makes use of second-order statistics and of a stereostochastic model for liberation (for instance, BooKing).

Zirconium chloride is of great commercial importance as starting materials for production of ZrO2, Zirconium metal and other Zirconium compounds from its main resources (Zircon Sands). The present study concerns with preparation of pure ZrO2 from Zircon by direct chlorination technique. Different parameters affecting the chlorination process are studied viz. carbon, chlorine flow rate temperature and time. The chlorination extent is determined from the loss in weight and chemical analysis of reaction products. The maximum chlorination extent -92% are achieved at 1100°C for 30 min. Zirconium oxide is produced from the collected zirconium tetrachloride either by calcination at 900°C or by hydrolysis in water in presence of RCI with a purity = 99%. Evaluations of the products of the process are investigated microscopically and by X-ray diffraction. The apparent activation energy of the chlorination of Zircon is determined to equal 36 kJ/mole.

INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to describe in engineering terms the singular and basic operational kinematics of all excavating and bulk handling equipment. The safe and efficient use of equipment will be fostered by enabling the engineer to conceptually duplicate the operators' "tasks" in directing and controlling it. A simple graphical and notational scheme will be introduced to define the essential gross repetitive motions. The significance of this effort includes filling a vital analytical gap at the work face, and in establishing direct communications between the engineer and equipment operator. Since all types and sizes of earth- moving equipment are covered, a major concern has been to integrate equipment specialties into d single encompassing discipline. Equipment types are closely related to the working conditions, and their selection and evaluation are also considered. The extension to human factors analysis is natural and predictable. Since human [actors are involved, the operational analysis can also be considered a catch-all for many subtle vagaries. BACKGROUND Symbolic modelling linked to a notational system will be developed and intensively used. This constitutes the "language of science," providing a shorthand method which gives immediate recognition, is fluent, explicit, reinforcing, unequivocal and provides limitless associations. Many examples of symbolic modelling exist in chemistry, physics, the military, engineering sciences and it is a major tool in mapping. Its use is so ubiquitous that it often goes unnoticed. On the other hand it must be realized that something is lost in simplifying and idealizing what is an extraordinarily complex occurrence. The components describing the basic operational kinematics of equipment include: (1) the vehicular motions as a rigid body and (2) the job-end motions focussing on excavating (Adler, 1985). These provide all of the components in the load-haul-dump sequence (L-H-D) , and will yield three dimensional expressions. Complex patterns can also be assembled from these simple elements. An existing equipment designation employed in earthmoving will be integrated into this approach (Carson, 1961). Along with the basic motions, corresponding working conditions will be noted.

Bacteria have long been used for the extraction of copper during dump leaching of sulfide minerals and in the recovery of uranium from mined-out areas. However, bacteria can also be used in extraction of trace metals from copper ores and waste materials. Molybdenum, tungsten, nickel, cobalt, gold, silver, and other strategic metals can potentially be released from ores and wastes by biological processes. The chemistry and biology of these reactions, the potential for using the processes, and the state-of-the-art of the technology will be discussed.

The Copper Range Company's mining properties are located in the Upper Penisula of Michigan. (Fig.). Early work indicated the presence of copper ore in a bedded deposit, confined to the base of the Upper Keweenawan Nonesuch shale, and exploitation of this deposit on a portion of the Company's property was undertaken by White Pine Copper Company. Diamond drilling of the White Pine orebody indicated that a major fault pattern terminated the values to the South-west. Further drilling Southwest of the fault zone proved a downward displacement of the ore bearing horizon some 1,500 feet and a lateral displacement of approximately 4,000 feet; and in this area an ore deposit was outlined in a large asymmetrical syncline locally plunging to the South-west. Hundreds of highway and rail transportation tunnels in North America have been rehabilitated in the last two decades. Tunnel rehabilitation is usually dictated by an owner’s need to extend the working life of the structure, but typically has the added benefit of increasing capacity (greater speed or increased clearance) and enhancing safety. Not only has rehabilitation proven to be an economical alternative to new tunneling, but it can be safely accomplished by working during short work “windows” without taking the tunnel out of service. This paper presents methodology for planning and designing of tunnel rehabilitation projects, and case histories illustrate successful excavation and support technologies.

The inclusion of a new term "planned subsidence" in the Surface Mining and Reclamation Act of 1977 has lead the U.S. coal mining industry into a new aspect of engineering: subsidence planning. Subsidence planning has necessitated the integration of geotechnical, civil, and mining engineering disciplines. Although much of the foundation and application work has been completed, subsidence planning is still a developing area. This paper discusses the application of subsidence planning in several brief case studies (a high voltage transmission tower, a sewage treatment plant, and a slurry impoundment), emphasizing the risk assessment aspects necessary to account for some of the uncertainties that may exist.

This paper review s several new applications of solvent extraction developed in conjunction with a research project carried out under the AEC Raw Materials Division by the Dow Western Division laboratories during the last two years. A process for recovery of uranium from ores by contacting the solid directly with organic solvent without a prior aqueous leach and a process for uranium recovery by contacting thick, unfiltered leach slurry with the solvent were studied in an attempt to simplify ad reduce the cost of ore treatment procedures. Processes to produce pure UF4 products at the concentrate mills thus eliminating the production and subsequent dissolution of the concentrate were investigated. Since many of the leach liquors contained vanadium as well as uranium, solvent extraction processes for by-product vanadium were also studied.

The incidence of heat stroke in the South African gold mining industry is today small (less than 1 in 10 6 shifts worked). Acclimatization and selection procedures have been developed and applied throughout the industry, underground working conditions have, and are being improved, and personnel are to-day made more aware of heat stress and its consequences than ever before. Although these actions have, over the years, brought about a steady reduction in the incidence of heat stroke (see Figure 1) the small incidence of heat stroke which persists indicates that heat stress is still a problem. This realization provides the stimulus for the work presented in this paper, which has as its primary objective the development of reliable heat stress limits for men working in South African gold mines. INTRODUCTION In the spring of 1988 the Joint Venture of Freeport-McMoran Resource Partners, Limited Partnership, IMC Fertilizer Inc, and Homestake Mining Co. was awarded the sulphur lease for Main Pass Block 299, lease number OCS-G 9372. This was one of eleven leases awarded to the Joint Venturers. Following the initial discovery wells in December 1988, a program of delineation drilling confirmed proven sulphur reserves of 67 million long tons. Proven, recoverable oil and gas reserves are 39.4 million barrels and 7.2 billion cubic feet, respectively. Development of the sulphur mine was given approval as a fast-track project by the Joint Venturers in 1989. The oil and gas reserves were acquired from the original hydrocarbon lessee in 1990 and given fast- track status immediately. Fast-track for these projects meant design and engineering would not be complete before construction began JOINT VENTURE The Main Pass Joint Venture is one of thirteen joint ventures formed between Freeport and three other companies - IMC Fertilizer, Inc., Felmont Oil Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Homestake Mining Co., and Texasgulf Minerals and Metals Co. Felmont has subsequently changed its name to Homestake Sulphur Co. and Texasgulf assigned their interests in the three leases they participated in to their parent company. Texasgulf did not participate in the Main Pass 299 joint venture. Joint venture negotiations, anticipating a lease sale in mid-1988, began in December of 1987. This Joint Venture was the first of its kind; created to acquire offshore leases, explore, develop and mine sulphur. The Minerals Management Service announced a lease sale date of February 24, 1988 on the first business day of 1988. This greatly accelerated the joint venture negotiations. Of the thirteen leases the Joint Ventures bid on, eleven were awarded. Freeport holds its interest in all the leases through its ownership interest in Freeport-McMoRan Resource Partners, Limited Partnership, and Resource Partners is the operator on all of the leases. The Main Pass joint venture percentage ownership is: 58.33 Freeport-McMoRan Resource Partners 25.00 IMC Fertilizer, Inc. 16.67 Homestake Sulphur Co. 100.00 The Main Pass Joint Venture paid $3,401,757 for the Main Pass lease and will pay a royalty of 12.5 percent of production value to the MMS . LOCATION The Main Pass mine complex is located in the Gulf of Mexico, in U. S. federal waters, about 27 kilometers (17 miles) east of Venice, Louisiana or 140 kilometers south east of New Orleans, Louisiana. It is situated in about 63 meters (210 feet) of water. HISTORY The Minerals Management Service (MMS) of the United States Department of the Interior administers the mineral properties of the United States located in federal waters. Periodically the MMS holds lease sales of blocks under its jurisdiction. Prior to the offshore discoveries of sulphur associated with salt domes leased for hydrocarbons, the MMS leased blocks with all minerals including hydrocarbons awarded to the successful bidder for the block. The majority of the successful continuous haulage systems were placed in operation in the early 1970s. These were all of the bridge conveyor type. They usually consisted of bridges and mobile bridge carriers (MBC) attached at the inby end to the continuous miner and at the outby end to the panel conveyor itself. These successful bridge conveyor continuous haulage systems are either of the belted or chain type. The most successful belt type continuous haulage systems are those manufactured and marketed by the Long-Airdox Co. Until early 1977, Jeffrey Mining Machinery Division manufactured and marketed the most successful chain conveyor type haulage sys¬tems. In 1977, Long-Airdox reentered the market with a chain-type system to complement its belted system. The original bridge-type continuous haulage system was introduced to the coal mining industry in the early 1960s by the old Long Co., a predecessor to the current Long-Airdox Co. These original units were of the chain conveyor type. In the early 1970s, there were also developments in continuous haulage, employing different material handling media. These in¬cluded the Serpentix, a flexible type belt, introduced by the Joy Manufacturing Co. There was also a serious attempt to introduce hydraulic-type continuous haulage by Consolidation Coal Co. and Conoco Research. Despite some startling successes, particularly with the bridge-type haulage systems, the general and widespread application of continuous haulage has eluded the mining industry. Some of the problems are related to underground conditions; others to people, both management and labor. One of the greatest obstacles to universal success continues to be the difficulty of accepting the philosophy as well as the machinery of continuous haulage. Nevertheless, efforts continue to spread the success of commercial and viable systems in the industry. There is also effort to improve on these systems, and on methods for their successful use. In addition, efforts continue, with private and public support, to develop new types of continuous haulage equipment and systems. Bridge Type System Developments Because they have already been successful in some US and overseas mines, new developments in bridge-type systems will first be touched on. The Long-Airdox Co. has continued to improve both its belted and chain continuous haulage system. In the belted system, the company recently introduced a new design that will be mainly applicable in higher coals and in noncoal mining applications, as shown in the accompanying figure. This new system is equipped with 305-mm-diam (12-in.-diam) pulleys in the bridges and mobile bridge carriers, in place of the 150-mm-diam (6 in.-diam) pulleys in the standard system. The modification is designed primarily to improve belt life and keep belt problems to a minimum. An operator, the Clinchfield Coal Co., a Division of Pittston Coal, developed the detaching of the bridge-type continuous haulage system from the miner by placing a mobile bridge carrier at the head of the string. However, Long-Airdox and Jeffrey have now made this an option to their at¬tached-type system. In the US, there are many chain type haulage systems detached from the miner with an extra MBC at the head. There are two such belted systems

Support characteristics of in-cycle trusses are analyzed using a photo-elastic model loaded by tightening a truss in the sequence normally used in an underground mine. Stresses in the roof at its center point and at the junction of the roof and rib are examined. Effects of zero tension and unequal tension in the inclined anchor rods are presented. Effects of simulated subsidence on stress in the roof surface and on tension in the separate truss members are examined. Conclusions are drawn relating to (1) the effects of tension in the inclined anchor rods on uplift and compressive stress parallel to the roof surface, (2) the effects of subsidence on stress in the roof surface and, (3) the effects of subsidence on tension in the truss members.

This paper is a progress report on the commercialization of using bioleaching for base-metal concentrates. The paper focuses on bioleach processes for recovering copper from chalcopyrite and nickel/cobalt from pentlandite/pyrrhotite. Data is discussed from pilot-plant trials in which an overall recovery >95% was obtained for the bioleaching of copper from chalcopyrite. The pilot plant was operated in closed circuit with solvent extraction and electrowinning circuits for final metal recovery. For the bioleaching of nickel and cobalt from pentlandite/pyrrhotite, an overall recovery of 97% was achieved. Precipitation routines were used to produce a final nickel/cobalt product. The pilot plants were capable of treating a few kilograms of concentrate per day. Prominent features in the design of a 1-t/day (1.1-stpd) copper-bioleach demonstration plant for the treatment of chalcopyrite concentrate are discussed. The plant, which is now under design, will be constructed and operated based on the results obtained from the laboratory pilot-plant campaigns. Issues of scale-up for the demonstration plant, together with integration into upstream and downstream processing, are also addressed. Independently derived capital and operating costs are presented for a possible commercial plant. These cost studies indicate the principle economic issues in considering the application of bioleaching to the extraction of base metals. The benefits of bioleaching complex concentrates that are not amenable to physical beneficiation and economic treatment by conventional smelting are highlighted. Issues, such as the environmental aspects, that illustrate the benefits of bioleach technology are given.
