Good morning ladies and gentleman. During 1995 Prof. R. P. King (University of Utah Comminution Center) presented 2 papers on new horizons in comminution: "Comminution Research in the United States " was presented at the 1995 Meeting of the National Mining Association, while "Comminution: Meeting the Needs of Fundamental Research in the Mineral Industry" was presented at the 2nd SME Research Forum - 1995. In both papers a very interesting graph named "Energy usage for various comminution schemes" illustrated some poignant issues proposed by Prof. King. We do think that some of Prof. King's ideas might very well serve as "warm-ups" for this Comminution Panel Discussion, which are ultimately the goals to be reached by the 3-minute presentations. Thus, we shall be addressing in the sequence Prof. King's most relevant ideas (as well as introducing his graph), intending therefore show how important creative and state-of-the-art Mill Modeling is, if it is to become a Tool to Effective Cost-Saving Optimization Strategies.

A real time data acquisition system has been developed for implementing standard radiometric analytical techniques, applied to the monitoring and control of mineral processing plants. The system uses standard ECB-bus microprocessors and peripherals, in conjunction with a specially designed nucleonic pulse ADC. It is being applied to the accurate on-line analysis of naturally-,occurring radioelements in processing plants, for example by simultaneously measuring the intensity of 1.46 MeV gamma-rays from the naturally-occurring radioisotope K-40, and the stream density by gamma-ray transmission of 662 keV gamma-rays. Gain stabilisation of the NaI(T1) scintillation detectors is maintained by the microprocessor in slave units, each of which may control up to four sample presentation systems. Data analysis - including corrections for bulk density, radioactive decay of the Cs-137 gamma-ray source, pulse pile-up, dead time and external background - is carried out in a master computer which is connected to the slave unit, and can be interfaced to the plant control computer via data links.

Introduction The Sierra Nevada Foothill Gold Belt in California extends from Mariposa north for more than 420 km (200 miles). It includes the Grass Valley and Alleghany districts in the zone of Northern Mines and the famous Mother Lode to the south. The gold belt has produced more than 3.1 kt (100 million oz) of gold since its discovery in 1848. This remarkable production, at the present gold price, would be valued at more than $40 billion. The Law of Gambler's Ruin supposes that averages are based on systematic rather than random variations. It emphasizes the vast differences between finite and infinite probability. By applying this Law to this figure, it can be seen that the belt has produced an average of 15.5 t (500,000 oz) of gold per running mile. Many geologists believe, with some justification, that less than half the gold in this belt has been mined. Sixty per cent of the past production has come from lode deposits, the balance from Tertiary and Recent placer gravels. This paper will concern itself with the developing lode mines along the Sierra Nevada Foothill Gold Belt. As a further and final note regarding placer mining along this belt, Mark Twain suggested that placer miners, having lost their senses, had contributed liberally to the population of California's insane asylums. After a 40-year lull with little or no gold production, the lode mines of this famous belt are showing signs of renewed activity. Two open pit mines, the Sonora (Jamestown) and Carson Hill, are now in operation at substantial scales. Two others, the Goldenbell (Pine Tree-Josephine) and the Royal-Mountain King, are being readied for production on equally impressive scales. All are in the southern part of the Mother Lode. Exploration farther north, at Sutter Creek, Drytown, and Georgetown, is showing encouraging results in developing deeper lode deposits. This new activity has been sponsored to a large extent by junior Canadian mining and exploration companies. Most of the established American mining companies have looked the other way, not participating in this important development. One major reason for domestic disinterest in this opportunity is there is little chance for heap leachable open pit ore in this belt, excluding Carson Hill. And heap leaching has become fashionable with American mining companies today. Also, this great old gold belt must have been worked out, for why else is there so little activity here - Catch 22 logic. Another reason is that if a new deposit of size and grade similar to the mines in the past was found, high costs would preclude a profitable operation. And, finally, California environmentalists would not permit mining, even if a rich deposit were found. These may all be pefectly valid reasons not to explore for gold along this belt. But a look at the history of gold mining in California may suggest that the future for exploration and development of the gold resources in the Sierra Nevada Foothills can be greater than the past. It was during the Depression of the 1930s that this gold belt saw its maximum activity, with more than 3000 mines in operation. Some were father and son operations producing only a few tons of ore a day. Other mines employed hundreds of miners to hoist more than 900 t/d (1000 stpd). Some ores were of marginal grade. The purpose of roasting gold ores is to release for extraction, typically by cyanidation, the small particles of gold which are surrounded by refractory stone. The roasting simply opens up passages for the penetration of solution into the interior of the ore particles. This is accomplished by the removal by volatilization or formation of volatile oxides of certain constituents such as sulfur, arsenic or antimony. Temperature is an important parameter. High temperatures tend to form a dense iron particle rather than a "spongy" calcine. The dense iron particles result in lower gold recoveries. High temperature can cause melting of some components which also results in gold encapsulation. Roasting of refractory gold ore concentrates has been practiced for decades. Multiple hearth, rotary kiln and muffle reactors were first used for roasting. Fluid bed roasting provided a low capital cost, low maintenance technology with better process control and soon became the favored technology. The first fluid bed concentrate roasters were commissioned in the late 1940's. Early fluid beds were "bubbling" type. Environmental considerations did not significantly impact on the design. Feedstocks were highly exothermic and reaction rates were relatively rapid. Roasting today must compete with other technologies for treatment of refractory ores. Ore bodies which are not

The traditional approach to mine ventilation planning involved making estimates of airflows, including leakage routes, and summing the corresponding pressure drops along consecutive paths in order to determine the fan pressures required. This methodology changed completely with the availability of computers. Mainframe digital computers began to be used for mine ventilation network analysis in the mid-1960's. Their use spread rapidly throughout the world in the 1970's. Mainframe machines were employed owing to the need for high speed numerical procedures and substantial storage requirements. However, during the past decade, the growing availability of low cost but powerful microcomputers has allowed the development of net- work analysis programs that can handle ventilation systems of hundreds of branches, and which can produce results within a few minutes. This paper discusses recent advances in software and hardware development specific to mine ventilation planning. Software developments include interactive data and output manipulation, graphical representation of output, internal checks on input parameters to preset ranges and subroutines which calculate the gas distribution throughout the network from known gas sources. Hardware advances have led to significant increases in memory to facilitate the analysis of large ventilation models, math co-processor chips which greatly shorten run times, and plotter hardware for graphical output displays. Recent software developments make it possible to graphically display output on printers faster than on standard plotters.

Gold occurrence in operating plant tailings ranges from gold in solution, fine free gold, gold associated with sulphides/arsenides/tellurides and gold occluded within iron oxides or arsenates and silica gangue. This paper briefly presents various alternatives to reprocess gold tailings, with examples. These include the use of centrifugal gravity separators, CIL, magnetic separation, flotation and pressure oxidation.

The problem of how best to exploit a reserve has vexed mine planners and design engineers since mining began. The cyclic nature of the mine design-scheduling problem, combined with the lack of good mathematical tools for tackling it, have ensured that it has been, and will continue to be, a major challenge for operations researchers working in mining. This paper reviews the current state of the art in pit optimisation and scheduling algorithms. Starting from the inception of the first block models in the late 1950's, it progresses through the developments and applications of the Moving Cone algorithm, the Lerchs Grossmann 3D Graph Theory algorithm and some of the heuristics, to the new artificial intelligence techniques that are being applied today. Along the way, it discusses the limitations of the various approaches and lays the foundations for the research that is currently being undertaken by CSIRO and others in the field of mine production scheduling and control.

Over the past decade, a substantial effort has been made to improve the air quality inside enclosed cabs of both underground and surface mobile mining equipment to reduce respirable dust exposures by the equipment operators. As part of this effort, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, (NIOSH) completed a comprehensive laboratory study that determined the significant factors for cab filtration and pressurization systems. From this information, a major underground mining equipment manufacturer designed a filtration and pressurization system that was incorporated into the enclosed cabs of its equipment. A long-term evaluation was performed on the effectiveness of this filtration and pressurization system to improve the air quality in the enclosed cabs of two different pieces of equipment, a face drill and a roof-bolter machine, at an underground limestone mine. This long-term evaluation demonstrated a significant reduction in dust levels between outside-to-inside cab respirable dust concentrations. During this evaluation, a modification to remove one of the filters on the roof-bolter machine simplified the design without sacrificing the system’s efficiency. Tests using particle count instruments performed during nonproduction time periods on both pieces of equipment indicated protection factors greater than 100 when comparing respirable-sized dust particles inside the enclosed cab relative to outside.

The rocks and minerals of the moon will be included among the raw materials used to construct a lunar base. The lunar regolith, the fragmental material present on the surface of the Moon, is composed mostly of disaggregated rocks and minerals, but also includes glassy fragments fused together by meteorite impacts. The finer fraction (i.e., < lcm) of the regolith, the soil, is probably the most important portion of the regolith for use at a lunar base. For example, soil can be used in bulk as insulation against cosmic rays, for lunar ceramic and abodes, or for growing plants. However, beneficiation of the soil can provide other feedstocks. For example, the soil contains abundant solar-wind implanted elements, as we1 1 as various minerals, particularly oxide phases, which are of potential economic importance. These components of the soil are sources of oxygen and hydrogen for water and rocket fuel, helium for nuclear energy, and metals such as Fe, Ni, Al, Si, and Ti. The uses of the lunar materials only await a fertile imagination.

Several years ago it was decided that ASARCO was in need of a good mine scheduling program to complete the computerized open pit mine planning package that was being used on new prospects and operating properties. A trial and error approach was being used to schedule a mine on a year by year basis, but this was time-consuming and far from offering an optimum solution l. Due to the magnitude of time and expertise required to develop such a sophisticated computer program, it was decided to search outside of the company for one already developed and available for purchase, This proved fruitless and therefore proposals were requested from consulting firms that had the expertise to develop such a program. Out of the five firms that submitted proposals, the one chosen was Systems Control, Inc., (S.C.I.) of Palo Alto, California. S.C.I. was selected because it was felt that they offered the greatest capability in the mathematical solution of complex problems. But due to their lack of mining expertise, a cooperative venture was developed whereby ASARCO would supply this mining knowledge. The selection of this vendor, the formulation of the contract and specifications, and the development of the computer program required about 3 years to accomplish.

Introduction Minicomputers have been gaining acceptance in mining. Low cost interactive processing and plotting can now be controlled by geologists or engineers needing rapid solutions and specialized mining software in formats that allow noncomputer personnel to readily interact with computer processes. User-oriented programs maximize the use of interactive display features and graphics, as shown by the HP9845 minicomputer, a unit with portability, processing power, graphics capabilities, capacity, and peripherals such as plotters, digitizers, disk drives, and printers. Application Coal exploration projects require that much effort be spent determining coal volumes within trial pit limits. This determines a prospect&apos;s viability and potential. Adapting volume calculations to a computer has been limited, since it was difficult to create reasonable representations of complex coal seam geometry with a digital process. So many of the simple mechanical procedures needed to produce pit reserves are still performed manually by geologists and engineers. But with new minicomputers and their interactive graphics, it is now practical to accurately model complex structures without tedious calculations. GEOSEM (Geomin Seam Oriented Exploration System) is a computer system designed to analyze coal prospects. The system shows how a coal prospect, with complex geology, can be quickly analyzed, modeled, displayed, and evaluated for mineable reserves. Its interactive graphics allow rapid visual presentation of data, high-speed tabular reports, and precision plotting. The system is most effective when used by a geologist or engineer who selects the required operations and specifies relevant parameters via screen and keyboard interaction. Rolling Hills The Rolling Hills prospect represents a typical Rocky Mountain coal deposit. Enough geological interpretation has been done to show a complex system of block faulting with coal seams following synclines of stratified lithologies. With the completion of initial drill hole exploration, questions arose concerning coal volumes and strip ratios involved with various pit limits. Quality information had been gathered on the coal intercepts. It was decided that coal vol¬umes and pit designs were of prime importance. The objective was to enter and display data, create a computer model based on interpretation, develop pit designs, compute seam/ waste volumes, and report various contents. The project, begun by entering data in the GEOSEM system, was completed in several days. Data Entry For modeling, the prime information was seam identity and drill hole intercept. Other information-rock type, Btu rating, and percent of ash, sulfur, and moisture-was also available. It, too, was entered into the data base through the computer keyboard and then reported, verified, and corrected. Various reports can be produced, according to user specified sort parameters. For example, from an analysis of available data, only 14 intercepts could be found with Btu value greater than 8000 and sulfur content less than 0.4%. The sort option can also be used prior to entry into the analysis routines. Data Analysis Though the objective was to create a seam model and compute reserves, it became necessary to project quality information into unsampled areas. Statistical analysis was then war-ranted. A typical analysis correlated the lack of relationship between percentage of ash and Btu. Although histograms were also produced, these typified a lack of samples and "ragged" distributions. A geostatistical analysis was also applied, showing the results of computing a 2-D variogram on the largest coal seam. Results showed an average range of 18 m, with a poorly defined variogram. Data Display and Drafting Scaled plans and sections were required so seam locations could be compared to hand drawn interpretations and drill coordinates verified. At the same time, topography could be interpolated from collar elevations to determine whether surface control points were needed for better definition. In addition, a new set of 50 final-scale drawings were required, showing new drilling information. By using the computer screen as a "scratch pad" device, various sections were displayed and then plotted on a drum plotter at the desired scale for overlay on original sections. Facing an orchestrated assault from the anti-mining lobby and its congressional allies, the Mining Law of 1872 may soon be either dramatically changed or even repealed. In 1989, Sen. Dale Bumpers (D-AK) introduced Senate Bill 1126 entitled the "Mining Law of 1989." It has been through several hearings and is still in the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, where Sen. Bumpers is the number two ranking Democrat. In the House, Rep. Nick J. Rahall (D-WV) introduced the "Mineral Development and Exploration Act of 1990," HR 3866. This bill is in the House Committee on Interior and Insu¬lar Affairs. (The numbers on these bills, and perhaps some of their language, will be changed when they are reintroduced in early 1991. However, their substance is expected to remain substantially unchanged. Bill numbers here refer to legislation as it was numbered in the 1990 Congress.) In the eyes of its supporters, Bumpers&apos; S 1126 appears to be more complete and has the inside track over the Rahall bill. Bumpers&apos; bill includes provisions for royalties, bonding and reclamation. The Rahall bill is criticized by opponents of the Mining Law for its failure to include a royalty provision and for not having specific bonding and reclamation provisions.

Kaolin deposits of Patagonia (Argentina) were formed by ?in situ? alteration of volcaniclastic rocks or by erosion, transportation, and deposition of residual clays in small basins. The mineralogy, geochemistry, grain size distribution, and specific surface area of natural and washed kaolins were studied in order to point out the relationships with the ceramic process. Primary kaolins are coarse-grained, kaolinite+quartz±halloysite, with a very low specific surface area. Sedimentary clays are either kaolinitic?smectitic and very fine-grained or kaolinitic with a coarser particle size distribution. An interdependence between mineralogy, chemistry, particle size distribution, texture, surface activity and ceramic behavior was found. Plasticity is strictly dependent on surface activity and expandable clay minerals. Slip rheology is affected by soluble salts, smectite, and tubular halloysite. Kaolinite-halloysite play an opposite role versus smectite-I/S in slip casting and tile pressing. Kaolinite and quartz are beneficial for drying behavior while expandable clay minerals increase drying sensitivity. Firing behaviour is mainly affected by minor components supplying fluxing oxides.

Although roof falls account for approximately half of the fatalities in underground coal mining, the factors that produce them are not clear. Mining methods can account for some, but in others the controlling factors are the geological setting in which the mining takes place. The present investigation was undertaken to determine the kinds of rocks that were most likely to produce roof problems. Such knowledge would be helpful to mine planning since rock samples can be obtained in advance of mining by core hole drilling. The investigation was undertaken in underground mines in the Pocahontas #3 seam in southern West Virginia and southwestern Virginia. The Pocahontas #3 is one of the most widespread in this region and is a major source of high quality metallurgical coal. There are at least ten very large mines in the area and many smaller ones. The region has a very long mining history and considerable experience has been gained in roof control problems. The study was conducted with the support of the U. S. Bureau of Mines.

Improved environmental performance comprises one of the key objectives of the sustainable development in the mining industry. Within this framework, a research project was undertaken by TVX Hellas, a mixed sulphides producer in northern Greece, in order to develop and evaluate anaerobic wetlands as an alternative method for the treatment of acidic waters originating from old mine areas. The anaerobic treatment using organic substrates, aimed to neutralize the acidity of the mine drainage and remove the dissolved metals, such as Fe, Zn, Mn etc., in the form of insoluble compounds retained within the substrate. The effectiveness of this treatment method, as compared with the conventional neutralization techniques with alkaline additives, extensively used in the mining industry, was assessed based on environmental and economic indicators. The indicators applied included contaminant removal, land take per unit of contaminant removed, effluents quality, remediation of past environmental damage, energy and reagents consumption, capital and operating cost. Based on the above, the applicability of anaerobic wetlands for the treatment of acidic streams originating from old mined areas was concluded.

Placer mining in Alaska had a desultory inception at Sumdum in 1869 and, during the years 1880 to 1896, received thin nourishment from the readily exhausted gold placers at Juneau and the longer- lived deposits in the Circle, Fortymile, and Rampart Districts. Finally, in 1897, the great Klondike discovery in Canada&apos;s Yukon Territory brought thousands of gold seekers to the Far North. These men, in successive, far-reaching gold rushes, found the large, rich gold deposits at Nome, Fairbanks, and Iditarod, as well as many smaller placers. The hectic rushes during the years from 1898 to 19 10 were comprised of hundreds, sometimes thousands, of "stampeders," as they were called. Since very many Alaskan creeks, from the crest of the Brooks Range in the north to the Pacific Ocean in the south, carry at least a few flakes of gold, there was ample seed to start a new stampede. Of the 100s of reported "strikes," nearly 50 became more or less important placer mining districts; by 1910 they had produced about 184.2 fine Mg (6.5 million fine oz) of gold; the all- time peak production year was 1906. A few of the miners and prospectors prospered, but the total value of all gold produced failed, by a wide margin, to cover the aggregate costs incurred by them in the undeveloped Territory of Alaska. On the other hand, the traders with their readily salable supplies of food, tools, and hardware and the freighters with their teams of dogs or horses and boats of all kinds profited throughout the era of stampede.

Introduction During the past decade a major objective of the process industry has been to use digital computer technology to improve plant operating efficiencies. This objective implied some form of optimization, a concept that has various interpretations depending on the view of the prospective user. For the purpose of this paper, optimization of a process plant is defined as the establishment and setting of plant operating conditions that maximize some mathematical yield function, i.e. maximum profit, minimum residue, etc. Analysis of these objectives and the available design and implementation techniques led to the conclusion that digital computer and optimization techniques are not the stumbling blocks, but rather the development and derivation of the mathematical models of the unit operations and process plants to be optimized. Such models should not only describe the optimized (steady-state) objective, but also how one steers to this state (control algorithm). Due to the multidisciplinary nature of the skills associated with the design and operation of process plants, the development of suitable models by a single discipline, such as the process control engineer, was found to be not only difficult but often impossible, due to budget and human resource limitations. To over-come these limitations, a computer aided design (CAD) tool has been developed. It aims to provide a productivity tool to the various disciplines, at the same time coordinating the technical input from each. The system described is but the starting point in an evolutionary development of a tool that, with use, is becoming more efficient and cost effective to use. Development has become an application engineering activity rather than the preserve of the computer specialist. Project phasing The development of a mathematical description of a process plant requires coordination of information from conceptual design to operation management. The activities required to build and operate a process plant are divided into four basic chronological activities or phases. These activities are often undertaken by different organizations and disciplines. As a result, continuity is often lost with the resultant loss of critical design data. The major activities are considered to be: conceptual and flowsheeting; detailing around the P & ID; building and commissioning; and plant operation. The CAD system described provides a design tool to be used for each of these activities, as well as providing continuity between the activities and the disciplines involved. The heart of the system is the dynamic simulation of the flowsheet. Each of the activities will be discussed, leading to two simple examples that demonstrate the use of the simulator. Figure 1 shows a schematic format of the various activities and the path followed by the dynamic flowsheet simulator in the life of a project. Flowsheet development The prime requirements in the design and develop¬ment of a process flowsheet are • selection of the correct unit operations to achieve the most economic (capital and operating) beneficiation of the specified reserve ; • the sizing of the unit operations to achieve the desired results, as a function of the projected feed rates etc., to handle the time related (dynamics) of the process; and • the production of a set of engineering documents showing the drawn and labeled flowsheet with an equipment list and process specification for each of the unit operations. The question may well be asked at this stage why dynamic flowsheet simulation should be considered when steady state modeling has been found to be adequate to date. With the increases encountered in the cost of capital, one often cannot afford the luxury of designing around the compounding worst case technique. Further, a more accurate design of the control surges can be achieved. No information is lost in that the steady state solution is in fact a subset of the dynamic model. In generalized state space modeling, the differential equations describing the process dynamics are illustrated in the following matrix notation: XDOT=A.X+B.U(1) Y =C.X+D.U(2) where XDOT describes the set of first order derivatives of the system state Vector, and X- is the system state Vector; A - is the system matrix operator which in the general nonlinear case is both a function of X and time ; U- is the process input vector; B - is the input mapping matrix; Y - is the set of observations; C - is the output mapping matrix which maps X - onto Y; and D- maps the input onto the observations. Thus, by time integration of the system dynamic equations, described in (1), the dynamic trajectory away from any set of initial conditions can be deter¬mined. Further, by finding the conditions at which XDOT = 0, the steady state solution can be determined.

Regression analysis of calculated on measured displacements were used to assess the influence of fill and fold plunge on shaft pillar mining at the Homestake Mine. These effects were neglected in the original three-dimensional finite element analysis undertaken in 1991. An average fold plunge of 15? and a 24K fill (Young’ modulus of 24,000 psi or 165 Mpa) were used in the reanalysis. Measured displacements were obtained from an array of 36 m (120 ft) multiple-position borehole extensometers installed in June 1994 and read to March 2003. Results indicate the effects of both on calculated displacements and thus on regression parameters are noticeable. However, these neglected effects would not have changed the original inference of Ross Shaft stability during pillar mining.

The sequence of events preceeding the discovery of the Mount Emmons molybdenite include some inadvertent near misses by several groups. The events are given in general chronological order to bring out the essentially contemporaneous, but different activities by several groups in two areas on opposite sides of Mount Emmons. The Mount Emmons molybdenite deposit lies in the Elk Mountain mining district. The west edge of the deposit is near the boundary between the Elk Mountain and Ruby mining districts as shown by the USGS map included (see Fig. 1). Considerable history regarding the Keystone silver-lead-zinc mine is given because of its proximity to the Mount Emmons molybdenite deposit which is on the other side of the mountain from Redwell Basin and where other significant activities took place. It should be noted that there was no documentary evidence available to me that would indicate that molybdenite was recognized to be present on, or under, any part of Mount Emmons, including Redwell Basin, before 1970. Veins containing silver-lead-zinc minerals were discovered in the Elk Mountain and Ruby mining districts about 1872. Some discoveries on the south flank of Mount Emmons about 1880 were developed into the Keystone mine. The Keystone has the largest cumulative production of metal ores of any of the mines in these districts. Most of the 413 Mt (455,473 st) of ore produced from the Keystone mine through August 1967 was produced after 1950. The ore averaged 175.4 gt (5.64 oz per ton) Ag, 2.62% Pb, 5.56% Zn, and 0.72% Cu.

Anomalous geologic or stress conditions ahead of a longwall face have the potential of causing great harm to both the individual miner and the mining operation as a whole. NSA Engineering has been developing seismic tomography techniques to image the panel ahead of the face. This paper presents the results of afield effort in which a 60-m (200-ft) segment of a longwall panel containing a fault zone was surveyed daily as the face approached. Stress distribution, geologic structure and dynamic elastic properties within the panel were plotted and compared to static laboratory measurements. The surveys successfully imaged an anomalous stress concentration that was likely influenced by the presence of the fault zone. The calculated dynamic physical properties generally agreed with the laboratory measurements.
