The 4th bore of the Caldecott Tunnel is a 50-ft horseshoe shaped highway tunnel located in the hills east of Oakland, California. Tunnel excavation was mostly completed using one of the world?s largest commercially available roadheaders, a Wirth T3.20. The geologic profile included seven different geologic units, which displayed a range of different behavior with regard to excavation and initial support. Following a brief introduction to the excavation and support methods, this paper will discuss roadheader performance in the various geologic units encountered during excavation. Comments will also be made concerning the relationship between the roadheader method of excavation and observed ground convergence during excavation.

Elongates are commonly used as stope support in South African gold and platinum mines. To evaluate the effect of the inherent strength, stiffness and yield variability associated with elongates, a statistical method is presented which addresses and quantifies the support performance at various levels of certainty. The analysis, which is based on a normal distribution, makes use of force-deformation curves determined from multiple laboratory compression tests on the same support type. The applicability of the method is illustrated making use of actual performance capabilities of various types of elongates. In order to ensure a high probability that support units installed underground exceed the standard support performance curve established by means of laboratory tests, the statistical mean of a suite of tests based on the same support type is downgraded. The ?correction factor? is a function of the mean and standard deviation of the test data, as well as the sample size of units deemed to control the local rock mass stability. It is shown that downgraded performance curves based on a high probability (90 to 95percent) of support units exceeding this performance level are suitable to ensure that the design of support systems will in variably meet the design criteria. In the highly discontinuous hangingwall rock mass typically associated with intermediate- and deep-level mining operations, the interaction between adjacent support units is comparatively limited (at the support spacings commonly used). Therefore, the appropriate sample size (n) of the support units controlling the local rock mass stability should be n= 1. In shallow mining conditions, sample sizes of up to n=5 may be warranted, depending on the spacing of joints and other discontinuities in the hangingwall.

What will this deal do to the company’s stock price? This question arises when a publicly traded mining company is presented with a new mine project, or business combination. The standard tool for addressing this question is to use discounted cash flow analysis, or net asset value(NAV), which is discounted cash flow net of liabilities. Cash flow-based analysis is invaluable for assessing project costs and other impacts on debt service capacity and internal rates of return. But cash flow analysis and NAV do not work very well for stock price analysis.

Profits in the crushed-stone industry, as in any other, represent the difference between selling price and production cost. When consumer demand increases rapidly, as occurred in the crushed-stone industry from 1918 to 1927, selling prices tend to rise. Cost of production usually rises, also, owing to the expense of expanding facilities, searching for and developing new quarries, and purchasing, installing, and operating new equipment. Frequently, also, the inattention of managements to the details of operating costs is responsible for their increase. This is not due to negligence but rather to the necessity of confining attention to the problems involved in producing material to supply orders. When market conditions change and consumer demand becomes stabilized or contracts, the producer's attention usually is directed to assuring the orders necessary to keep his enlarged facilities busy. Hence, competition increases and soiling prices decline.

Chemical and physical properties of typical low-rank coal (LRC) ash are significantly different than bituminous coal ash. With the exception of extraneous ash, which is incorporated during mining or is due to ash partings within or between coal seams, LRC ash consists primarily of inherent ash that is bonded into the coal's organic matrix or finely disseminated mineral matter. This paper reviews the nature of LRC ash, both inherent and extraneous, and how this impacts the prospects of washing and utilizing LRCs. A literature review, as well as washability data, proximate and ultimate analyses and ash analysis of 25 Alaskan LRC seams are used as a basis for this discussion. The authors' recent research into the nature and distribution of phosphorous in an Alaskan LRC is also discussed

"In most mineral processing operations the term audit is usually reserved for the exercise of checking financial records and/ or safety practices. While these activities are time consuming, no one disputes their necessity or value. If we subject these areas to such careful scrutiny, why is it that we don't normally apply the same principles to critically examine process operation. After all, the operating efficiency of the plant impacts directly on the measures of profitability.A mineral processing plant is a complex system that has a number of distinct, but mutually dependent elements: process equipment, instrumentation, operating policies, maintenance policies, control strategies and people. To ensure maximum economic performance, in the dynamic environment that characterizes a concentrator, requires a periodic review of each of these areas. However, to be useful, the study must be based on sound metallurgical principles and be conducted in a highly focused manner. Experience teaches us that the exercise is very revealing and potentially very rewarding.This paper will discuss the process audit process and illustrate its potential value through illustration taken from plant studies.IntroductionThe last twenty years have seen tremendous technological and organizational changes sweep the minerals industry. Process control systems, on-stream analyzers, and gold recovery techniques barely conceived twenty years ago are now incorporated in virtually all new installations in an effort to maximize operating efficiencies. In conjunction with these developments, changes in the way plants are managed, down-sizing of technical staff, reduction in the size of operating crews, and the flattening out of the management structure have significantly reduced operating costs. As a result, plants are making more efficient use of our natural resources, minimizing the costs of production, and in turn maximizing operating profits. Or are they?"

Keywords: torpedo car, kinetics, physical modeling A 1:6 torpedo car physical model was built to assess the optimum refining conditions for pig iron desulfurization in the torpedo car considering the industrial parameters used in the steel plant CSBM (Companhia Siderurgica Belgo-Mineira, João Monlevade, MG, Brazil). The refining practice in this plant is through injection of a CaO-CaF2-Mg powder in the pig iron melt. Similarity between the model and prototype were established through Froude and turbulent Reynolds criteria. Mixing times were evaluated by pulse tracer addition and the kinetics of metal/slag interactions were assessed from experiments investigating iodine transfer from kerosene to water. The influence of parameters such as level of metal, gas flow rate, lance penetration, lance orientation were also evaluated.

One way to ensure dragline productivity is by Increasing the size of the dragline bucket. In August 1994, Optimum Colliery in conjunction with Van Reenen Steel, Northwest Applied Technology, SSAB of Sweden and Barlows Equipment launched the new lightweight dragline buckets. Optimum built the first prototype bucket that was used for the deslgn for future buckets. After knowledge had been gained from measuring the input force of the bucket Northwest Technologies designed the new bucket with finite element analysis. Together with the knowledge of quenched and tempered steel from SSAB of Sweden and Barlow Equipment, the new Wrightech bucket was born.

The 8 ft by 91/2 ft drive which joined No. 7 Shaft with Browne Shaft on the 1,480 ft level was extended from both ends and met at a point approximately 12,000 ft from No. 7 (2,000 ft from Browne).The surveying required for this 2 1/2 mile haulage drive called for greater accuracy than was obtainable from South Mine standard methods. Procedures and devices from published information were tried and modified as required to suit local conditions. Several new methods were applied and improved as the drive advanced. The control of angular, linear and level measurements was perhaps considerably in excess of the requirements, but this was offset by abnormally large discrepancies resulting from shaft plumbing. The accuracy of the final breakthrough, although not to the standard desired, was sufficient to complete the connection without inconvenience and added cost.INTRODUCTIONThe acquisition of the Browne Shaft leases in January 1962 presented the management of Broken Hill South Limited with the problem of transporting ore from these leases to its mill. It was eventually decided that diesel locomotivehaulage through a 2t mile drive on the 1,480 ft level between the two mines was the best solution. The drive was advanced from both ends after Browne Shaft was deepened by 80 ft to reach the 1,480 ft level horizon. Each end advancedabout 15 ft/day with the miners working three 7 hr shifts. Blasting was restricted to the end of the shift.The survey work involved five shaft plumbings and 78 theodolite stations in a traverse, underground and surface,of more than 5 miles. Because of the exceptional length of the drive, an unusually high degree of reliability was required.The aim was for a maximum error at breakthrough of 1 ft 1 in 30,000, and to secure this, precise methods of linear measurement were necessary. Shaft plumbing in particular posed special difficulties.

Heavy metal-containing wastewater from hydrometallurgical processes of lead-zinc was treated by biologics in a 200 m3/h industrial scale experiment. The result shows that Zn concentration declined from 50.28 mg/L~240.81 mg/L to 0.21 mg/L~1.98 mg/L, Pb from 1.00 mg/L~13.47 mg/L to 0.083 mg/L~0.71 mg/L, Cu from 0.24 mg/L~2.38 mg/L to 0.059 mg/L~0.40 mg/L, Cd from 2.12 mg/L~23.47 mg/L to 0.011 mg/L~0.071 mg/L and As from 0.50 mg/L~6.00 mg/L to 0.005 mg/L~0.10 mg/L. The concentrations of the above heavy metals in the treated water were lower than that in Integrated Wastewater Discharge Standard (GB8978~1996) in China. Furthermore, the treated wastewater was recycled and reused in smelter plant. Zinc content in hydrolytic sludge reached up to 34.04%, which indicates that this sludge can be used to recover valuable metals.

One of the most effective methods of metal surface heat treatment is through laser hardening. In most cases, laser parameters are determined experimentally, which is expensive and time-consuming. A mathematical model for the surface heat treatment process will allow a significant decrease in costs, and reduce the time required for optimization. In the present work, the authors present a mathematical model for laser heat treatment with forced cooling which can be applied to medium carbon steel. The model is based on a three-dimensional heat transfer equation using Green?s function. The model allows one to calculate the temperature of the treated steel at different depths below the surface with and without cooling, for set values of the laser power and travelling speed, when the heat transfer coefficient is a known constant. It also takes variations in the radiation adsorption coefficient on the metal surface and laser beam spot size into account. The model was illustrated by comparing calculated and experimental temperature profiles of mild carbon steel with 0.5% C with and without cooling. A reasonably good agreement was achieved between experimental and predicted values to ensure that a high enough austenizing temperature with short enough cooling time was reached for direct martensite formation. It also predicted the depth of treatment accurately. The incorporation of cooling in the model substantially improves previous models based on heat transfer only. It delivers a tool that can with a reasonable accuracy predict the depth of surface heat treatment and cooling time required from operational parameters, such as laser power, speed of motion, and distance between laser and cooling source, that can be controlled in the work set-up. O equipamento utilizado na medição do CWI de Bond também mede uma estimativa da energia de fratura das partículas de amostras de rochas e minérios. Esta medida só pode ser considerada uma estimativa da energia de fratura se, durante o ensaio, o material não é danificado. Em função do procedimento do ensaio de CWI, é possível que as partículas sejam danificadas por impactos sucessivos dos martelos em energias de impacto crescentes. Se houver danificação, a estimativa da energia de fratura será menor do que a energia de fratura real do material. Caso contrário a energia de fratura medida corresponde a energia de fratura mais a energia equivalente a um incremento de 5º do ângulo de impacto. Neste trabalho uma metodologia foi desenvolvida especificamente para avaliar a danificação de partículas de rochas durante o ensaio de CWI. Quatro amostras distintas de rochas/minérios foram testadas. Os resultados mostram que há uma tendência consistente indicando que a danificação ocorre, porém, se de fato as partículas danificam, a magnitude da redução da energia de fratura é baixa ou incipiente.

The Kisladag Mine, Turkey, is a large porphyry gold deposit which is mined by open pit methods. In operation for over ten years, Kisladag provides an excellent example of how attention to a geologic feature, namely hydrothermal alteration, became a very effective predictive geological tool for planning and operation. The alteration domains were initially used as a geological tool to assist with establishment of resource model domains and to guide delineation drilling, but they were soon recognised to be correlative to geotechnical characteristics (affecting pit slope angles) and metallurgical performance (heap leach recoveries). Recent developments in spectral processing allow the systematic quantification of complex overlapping alteration phases and have greatly improved the ability to rapidly define internally consistent alteration domains for geotechnical and geometallurgical purposes.Alteration at Kisladag comprises a central core potassic (K-feldspar-biotite) zone, a tourmaline-white mica enveloping zone, an advanced argillic lithocap on the deposit’s eastern side and an overprinting pervasive argillic zone. These alteration zones and their distribution were based initially on strictly qualitative, visual mineralogical logging of diamond drill core. With the need for more accurate and consistent identification of the alteration mineral suites, particularly the phyllosilicate phases, logging was augmented by systematic measurement of spectral data using a Terraspec instrument.Recently the Kisladag spectral database (over 85 000 readings) was reprocessed by the newly developed methodology (aiSIRIS™) that allows relative quantification of the spectrally-responsive minerals. Visualising this transformed spectral mineralogy at various mineral concentration thresholds using implicit modelling software (Leapfrog®) led to the creation of consistent mineralogical and alteration domains that are used for the definition of geotechnical and geometallurgical parameters. An implicit modelling workflow enables these domains to be easily updated as new data is collected while maintaining geological integrity of the model.CITATION:McKinley, S, Baker, T and Öztas, Y, 2017. This Bureau of Mines publication consists of an overview of the mine waste management research currently being conducted by the Bureau. The following papers, given at a Technology Transfer Workshop, emphasize the increasing importance of research related to the safety and environmental considerations of mine waste disposal In recent years. Current work related to legislation passed in the last 10 years and their subsequent standards includes the development of adequate monitoring systems, development of stability and seepage prediction and control techniques, control of runoff water, and control of leaching solutions. Selected topics are included here that cover coal mine waste disposal, embankment slope stability monitoring, flow failures of mine tailings impoundments, and controlled burnout of abandoned coal mine fires. The projects described provide a current documentation of problems being addressed.

In the present study, formation of PCDD/Fs from carbon particles like æsootÆ, so called de novo synthesis, was experimentally simulated using the powder mixture of graphite and metallic chloride. Composite states of graphite and chloride particles were varied by the preliminary treatment, ie high-energy ball milling for different time or heating at different temperatures. These samples were subjected to the measurement of the rates of weight loss mainly due to the oxidation of carbon, the formation of absorbent organic chlorides (AOX) and the formation of PCDD/Fs at 300¦C. The amount of PCDD/Fs formation increased by applying certain pretreatments. Further, linear relationships were obtained among the formation rates of PCDD/Fs and AOX and the weight loss of sample. These results will give useful information to investigate the mechanism of PCDD/Fs formation from unburned combustible carbon and hydrocarbon in thermal processes.

During the past few years, the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) examined and characterized conditions at a majority of the underground stone mines in the United States. Observations at these mines revealed a limited degree of roof monitoring beyond visual inspection and sounding. When monitors are used, they typically require the miner to measure movement at the roof. If conditions are unstable, the mine rmay be in a hazardous situation while recording data. Based on this scenario, researchers surmised that a simple, inexpensive monitor with the capability of recording data at a distance from the mine roof would be a safer way to gain the information. Additionally, more widespread use of monitors could potentially lead to better understanding of roof movement in general. A monitor to meet this need was designed, tested, and subsequently improved as experience was gained in its’ use at a number of underground stone mines. The Roof Monitoring Safety System (RMSS) can provide an initial indication of movement in roof beams. By understanding and measuring roof movement in underground mines, the potential for injuries and fatalities to mine workers from falls of ground can be reduced. Also, officials at a mine with a history of data are better prepared to make a decision on remedial actions in the event of ground falls. This paper will outline the evolution of the RMSS and how it can be used in a comprehensive proactive ground control safety program. Also included is a case history describing how the RMSS was used in an evaluation of the effectiveness of a mechanical impact scaling machine at an operating limestone mine.

An investigation was carried out into the effect of physical parameters, such as particle size of the sample, residence time, solid/liquid ratio and impeller speed in the flotation cell, on the solubility in soft tap-water of colemanite (calcium-bearing borate) from Emet, in Turkey. Solubility increased steadily with residence time from 5 to 20 min but only minimally thereafter. There was a similar increase with impeller speed from 500 to 1 500 rev/min, beyond which a solubility of around 1.05 g/l was again established. There was a slight decline in solubility as the solid/liquid ratio was increased from 1 to 30%, with stable values around 1.05 g/l at a 20% ratio, while a sharp decrease was observed with decrease in size down to the -20 micrometre fraction. The effect of solubility should be taken into account if the application of a wet-processing method is being considered for the ore, while it can also result in losses of material during handling and storage

Tapira Mine (Tapira, MG, Brazil) is the largest phosphate ore and concentrate producer in Brazil. The mine is an open pit, which until recently operated with a large equipment fleet and now uses a smaller fleet operated by contractors. The annual production reaches 17 Mt of ore plus 14 Mt of waste at a stripping ratio of 0.82. Defining the geological boundaries and forecasting the annual production can be a difficult task if not performed on a reliable model. The geological model has been totally reviewed as well as the estimation process. Ordinary Kriging has been used to build the new block model with P2O5 and contaminant grades. After estimation, block model validation and classification criteria definition to assess resources and reserves, the result is given by the life-of-mine plan is defined after pit optimisation and design. The Lerchs-Grossmann algorithm implemented in the NPV Scheduler was used to define the long-term production targets based on the main parameters P2O5 and the contaminants that are just important to the beneficiation process.
