The underground hard rock mining industry has had little change since the mobile equipment era began in the 1970s. Equipment has become larger and faster but has not kept pace with the following challenges: ? Improvements in safe production, ? Increasing demand for metals, ? Environmental improvements, ? Decreasing grades, ? Increasing depth of mining, ? More metal from underground vs. surface mining, and ? Energy and green house gas awareness. We are on the cusp of a new mining era and must rethink how underground hard rock mining must change in order to meet these challenges. This paper will show historical changes and propose a set of guiding principles for the next era of mining. Mining has changed over the last century. Initially mining was primarily an endeavor carried on by private companies with minor environmental controls and few social expectations other than employment. In the mid to later part of the century the mining industry was facing new challenges: deeper mines, the London Metals Exchange markets for pricing, and environmental concerns related to acidic rock drainage coming to the forefront. In today?s context, mining has evolved in complexity with the social and environmental aspects equally or surpassing the technical complexities such as expanding from mining hard rock to laterites, and mining lower grades or at greater depths. Nowadays, communities must be considered as partners, both locally and globally and the increased international visibility pushes the mining sector to take a more balanced approach to the business of mining (Fig. 1).

The hydraulic air compressor (HAC) is driven only by water, held up by a dam, to create relatively low head (typically 10-20 metres), such that the developed hydropower is used to cause flow in openings deeper underground. Air is entrained in the water at the inlet to the sub-surface openings (an air to water volume ratio of 1:1 is reported to be optimal) and is compressed as it is carried along by the deepening water flow. At depth, and with lower water velocities arising from larger cross sectional area tunnels, air bubbles separate out of the water flow and are collected in a receiver space above the flowing water. Water, free of air, then passes back up a return shaft (up-pipe) and rejoins the river or stream flow. In principle, an HAC can produce any pressure and flow rate required, given large enough shafts and enough water supply with head sufficient to overcome frictional resistance in the sub-surface tunnels. Practically, as air solubility in water increases with pressure, HAC installations with depths greater than 100 metres may lead to higher rates of compressed air loss, without special separation measures. A modern HAC application for mine refrigeration and cooling is presented.

"GeneralThe Malartic Gold Fields mill is presently treating ore from four different companies. The ore is delivered by truck, by the shipper, and dumped into the Malartic Gold Fields ore bin. This ore varies in size from 'Run of mine' to minus 8 11, All ore is crushed to pass a 3/ 8 11 x 4 11 cross slotted screen.Weighing and SamplingAfter crushing the ore passes over an adequate-weigher (250 T .P.H. capacity) on its way to the fine ore bins. This weigher has a remote counter at the sampling point.A 36” Vezin sampler cuts 15% from the ore stream as it enters the mill bins. This portion is elevated, by means of a short belt conveyor, to feed the No. 2 Vezin sampler. (This elevation is necessary to give headroom for the following machines). The ore on the conveyor is levelled to give a uniform stream to the second sample cutter. The second, third and fourth cutters are 2411 •The No. 2 Vezin sampler cuts 19% from its feed and this portion falls directly into a 1611 x 1011 Denver rolls crusher. This crusher reduces the ore to -1/ 8 11 , approximately. The discharge from the rolls crusher falls on a revolving circular plate with scraper, which gives a uniform stream to the No. 3 Vezin sampler.The No. 3 Vezin cuts 10% from its feed. This portion falls on another revolving plate to give a uniform stream to feed No. 4 Vezin."

Au/TiO2 catalysts were prepared by deposition-precipitation using NaOH (DPN) (~3 wt % Au) and urea (DPU) (~8 wt % Au), and calcined at various temperatures between 100 and 400 °C. They were characterized by UV-Visible, XANES, EXAFS and TEM. Their activity were tested in the reaction of CO oxidation at 5°C. After preparation, the gold species are in the oxidic state III. They begin to transform into metallic gold under air at ~100 °C for DPN and ~150 °C for DPU. At 200 °C, all the gold is metallic for the two preparation methods. The particle size increases from 1.5 to 3.5 nm with the calcination temperature. The catalytic activity for CO oxidation increases with the percentage of metallic gold, and it is maximum at 200°C for both types of samples. The activities (per mole of Au) are the same for the two types of catalysts. At higher temperatures, the catalytic activity drops. The decrease of activity is mainly due to a change of particle shape with the calcination temperature rather than to the increase of the particle size. At a calcination temperature of 200°C, the particles present small facets with rounded parts, and their outer surface contains a large proportion of low coordinated sites (steps and corners) while at high temperature of calcination, they are truncated octahedra with smooth facets.

This article summarizes the main tax considerations that need to be taken into account with respect to a mining investment outside Canada.Branch Versus SubsidiaryOne of the first questions that arises in connection with a prospective foreign investment is ""Should we invest directly (that is, in a branch operation), or should we invest through a foreign subsidiary?"". In the case of a branch operation, the Canadian company owns and operates the business directly - that is, the foreign business assets are part of the Canadian legal entity. In the case of a foreign subsidiary, the foreign business operation is owned and managed by that subsidiary. The tax treatment of a branch and a subsidiary can be quite different."

Among other products steel mesh has been used successfully for many years to support strata and minimise loose material from falling into the mine opening. Installation of steel mesh has proven to be difficult to automate and many other products, such as Thin Spray-on Liners (TSL), have been proposed as a replacement. Ideally, the mechanical properties of these products should be superior to those of the steel mesh, however, most TSL trialled in mines to date have been weak and in addition have had slow cure times, as a result none of these materials can seriously compete with steel mesh. Now a new polymer product that cures in seconds and forms a stiff strata binder that surpasses the properties of steel mesh is under development at the University of Wollongong. To enable selection of a suitable polymer material for roadway skin reinforcement several numerical models were constructed to investigate the role of interface roughness and the influence of polymer stiffness on load transfer along the rock-polymer interface. Laboratory tests indicate that the shear adhesion of the rock-polymer interface can be substantial while the tensile adhesion can be much lower. The models indicate that the natural stone roughness and surface waviness plays a major role in shear adhesion while the elastic properties of polymer liner can significantly influence the polymer ability to resist fracture opening.

"Abstract - Resource modelling is a complex process involving different specialists with relevant experience using a multi-disciplinary approach and the best available technology and reviews by independent auditors. The reliability of the final resource estimate is highly dependent on the quality control exercised at each stage of the process. At each step in the resource modelling process it is necessary to define the specific objectives, the methodology proposed to achieve those objectives and to establish a set of checks and validation tools to assess the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. Designation of responsibility and authority for meeting these objectives must also be clearly identified. External audits must also be incorporated to review and validate the implementation of new procedures.Resource modelling is the basis for any economic appraisal of a mining project and includes a number of steps from data acquisition and validation to resource reporting, classification, and risk analysis."

Éléonore project is a gold ore processing plant at a mine site located near James Bay, Quebec, Canada. SNC-Lavalin was mandated by Goldcorp to perform EPCM services on the ore processing plant and permanent infrastructures of the project following an internal pre-feasibility study. The project incurred considerable challenges due to fast-tracking from a pre-feasibility to detailed engineering and construction. The paper reviews how the EPCM was carried out. Some of the challenges resulting from skipping the feasibility study stage are discussed. The paper also presents how multiple offices across Canada were used for the engineering design.

"The original grinding circuit at East Malartic consisted of two 8 by 8 C.A.C. mills in closed circuit with two 72 inch Akins Classifiers and an 8 by 10 secondary mill in closed circuit with two 48 inch duplex classifiers. With this circuit, we experienced a drastic drop in tonnage from one month to another, due to variations in the hardness of the ore. The first step to overcome this difficulty was made by increasing the critical speeds of the mills from 78% to 82%. This resulted in an increase in the secondary mill throughput; but, when the change was made on the primary mills no increase was obtained.The drastic drops in tonnage were still experienced and through working with Allis Chalmers the 8 by 10 mill was converted to a rod mill and the two 8 by 8 n1ills to secondary mills. This change eliminated the two 72 inch Atkins classifiers and the scoops on all the mills, since the 48 inch Akins classifiers sands could then be fed by gravity to the secondary mills through feed pipes.The rod mill and secondary mill discharges were fed to a common pump box using 5 by 5 S.R.L.'s running at 1085 R.P.M. with a twenty-five foot head. When this was done the pumping costs jumped from $105. 00 for 6 months to $1050. 00 in one month, or from 0. 0004 to 2. 75 cents a ton milled. Mining being a site specific activity, land becomes the prime requirement for starting, successful execution and closure of any mining project. Many important mining projects are not progressing satisfactorily just because land is not easily available or environmental/social issues are not addressed properly. This is especially true in the case of open-pit mining, which requires large areas for mining, dumping of waste and additional land for other mine facilities. Mine closure & post mining land use exercises, though funded generously, may not achieve their objectives owing to uneven land profile after mineral extraction is over. One of the prominent solutions to these issues is application of steep angle conveyors in large open pit mines that will result in more space for internal waste dumping and enhanced slope stability of the dump. Additionally, such applications will result in economic extraction of mineral in deep open pits. Land reclamation exercise may start concurrently during early years of mine development as mineral evacuation is limited to a specific part of the mine. Surface mining facilities can also be advanced along with the pit by using modular/portable structures. The paper presented here attempts to address specific land related issues by developing suitable schemes and plans that can be practically implemented in open pit mines using advanced technology i.e. steep angle conveyors.

"The mining industry is facing serious long- and short-term challenges relating to uncertain commodity prices, environmental pressures, and margin compression due to rising energy costs. Energy issues, formerly treated as an operating cost, are changing as executives search for longer term solutions to deal with uncertain fossil fuel prices and greenhouse gas emissions. Consequently, mining executives are increasingly willing to consider introducing a proportion of renewable energy (RE) systems into the mine energy mix. This paper examines how RE can be successfully integrated at mine sites, as well as some of the benefits and barriers to their wider adoption.RÉSUMÉ L’industrie minière fait face à de sérieux défis, à long et à court terme, en raison de l’incertitude des prix des matières premières, des pressions environnementales et des compressions de la marge bénéficiaire dues à la hausse des coûts de l’énergie. Les questions énergétiques, auparavant considérées comme un coût d’exploitation, changent alors que les cadres cherchent des solutions à plus long terme afin de prendre des mesures pour contrer les prix incertains des combustibles fossiles et les émissions des gaz à effet de serre. "Abstract- Two examples are used to describe how geological features impact on the development of semi-variogram models to be used for geostatistical resource/reserve estimation of porphyry-type deposits. In the Main zone of the Huckleberry porphyry copper deposit, mineralization is concentrated in fracture zones localized in volcanic rocks, along the eastern and southern margins of a granitic stock. Mineralized volcanic rocks can be subdivided into three separate domains, each with its own preferred direction of mineralization that is reflected in contoured Cu diagrams and semivariograms.The East zone at Huckleberry deposit, spatially distinct from the Main zone, is controlled by a fracture zone elongate roughly east-westerly and bounded on the south by a major fault (easterly striking and steeply dipping) across which there is a dramatic drop in grades. The eastern part of the East zone appears to be coaxial with a large intrusive body; the western part contains a small, elongate dike-like intrusion. Contoured Cu values for many levels suggest that the principal direction of geological elongation of the east and west domains of the East zone differs significantly. Independently derived semi-variogram models for each domain are different and reflect this difference in trend.In both Main and East zones of the Huckleberry deposit, block estimates by ordinary kriging are significantly different using a domain-specific semi-variogram model than using a deposit-general semi-variogram model. The domain-specific estimates are deemed better because they are based on local controls of mineralization and have less conditional bias than those generated by the depositgeneral semi-variogram model."

The Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) is a scientific facility that will be placed in the deeper reaches of the Homestake mine, Lead, SD. Our team of geologists and engineers is carrying out the first scientific project awarded to the site ? Towards a Transparent Earth. Taking advantage of the thousands of open exploratory and sand-line holes, we are installing the beginnings of a seismic observatory. Each installed station consists of a 3-D accelerometer package and a 1 nanoradian 2-D tilt meter. In order to allow for a variety of monitoring and characterization studies, the array instruments are sensitive over the frequency bandwidth of 0.2 - 1 KHz. Three, three component accelerometer stations are currently installed ? in a 140 m deep bore beneath the slurry pump house, and in 12 m deep bores on the 2000-foot level, 800 and 400 m from the Ross shaft. There is a tilt-meter installed at each 2000 level station. These installations are in 150 mm diameter sand-holes. From the currently installed tilt sensors we are investigating solid earth deformation as a response to tidal potential. The accelerometers are being used to locate and characterize events associated with mine dewatering and rehabilitation.

"The one point left off the table was pumping costs, i.e. the cost of pumping to the cyclones.At East Malartic 5 x 5 S R L pumps that had been used to pump the classifier overflow were used to pump the rod and ball mill discharges to the cyclones. Maintenance costs on the pumps rose from $105 in 6 months to $1000 per month. The pumps had to be operated at 1150 rpm and impellers lasted only 5 to 6 days. These pumps were replaced by 6 x 6 S R. L. pumps operating at 825 rpm, but at this speed the coarser sands settled and plugged the pipe lines and the speed was increased to 925 rpm. The maintenance cost is now $100 per m::rnth which is 0 003 cents per ton milled. The impellers now last 1 month and the casing linings 6 months.Density meters are often used on cyclone overflows and sometimes on the cyclone feed. Haliburton weighted tube density meters are used in some plants. They are cheaper than the radioactive density controller, $2500 as compared to $ 6000The angle of the discharge spray from the apex can be used to judge the quality of perform1nce of a cyclone.For ordinary metallurgical applications the inside slope of the cyclone is not too important but for fine separation steeper slopes are used.The cyclone is a versatile tool and will handle considerable variations in feed tonnage - probably up to 15%. Above this variation the number of cyclones used has to be increased or decreased or the tonnage fed to them has to be adjusted"

"Canada doesn't really have a tax system for mining - it has eleven separate tax systems! The consequent maze adds some undefinable margin of difficulty to making investment decisions in Canada. But, this 11U1Ze is not likely to be simplified. Solution: learn it and sell it! Intricate Network of Winding PathwaysWebster's New World Dictionary defines the word ""maze"" as follows: ""a confusing, intricate network of winding pathways; labyrinth ... a state of confusion or bewilderment"". Webster's does not go on to give an example of a maze, but the dictionary could easily have referred to the taxation of a Canadian mining operation. The uninitiated would almost certainly look upon such taxation as a maze of the most perplexing sort.Twenty years ago, Canada's tax system was really quite simple. It is true that Canadian mining profits were subject to three levels of taxation (federal income tax, provincial income tax, and provincial mining tax), but this didn't pose a problem. Prior to 1974, at least the provincial income tax systems were somewhat the same in terms of rules .and rates, and even the provincial mining tax systems resembled one another. Mining profits were subject to pretty much the same rules, no matter what province or territory hosted the mine. Those were the “good old days” one could even dare to generalize about tax rates without fear of being labelled an imbecile!"

Failure to meet quality objectives during the execution of any industrial project has lasting negative impacts on facility life cycle performance. Cost overruns, schedule delays, and rework are characteristics of project quality issues that arise during the project. Commissioning and start-up problems, low production, production bottlenecks, breakdowns and the necessity for operational work-arounds are characteristics of project quality issues that appear after project completion. Risks such as production facility downtime, shortened equipment life, and potential HSE violations must be clearly identified and addressed during project planning phases. Appropriate Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) focus must be placed on identified high-risk areas. In order to be effective, quality systems must be flexible, non-confrontational, consistent, and adaptable to projects of any size ? from capital mega-projects to small maintenance projects. All project participants must be aligned in how they are approaching quality and the difference between QA and QC must be clear to everyone on the project. Emphasis must be placed on QA activities to minimize project cost, reduce rework, manage change, and reduce the production facility operational risk. QA is focused on the work processes used to generate the design and confirming that the processes are present and being followed. Issues in the work processes guarantee that the output drawings and specifications will be less than optimal. The identification and monitoring of quality-critical processes provides a focus for QA activities. QC activities are then used to generate proof that the project was implemented correctly and become a key part of the turnover.

"INTRODUCTION A pilot heap leach project was conducted on the B. P. Selco Hope Brook ore located in southwestern Newfoundland. The pilot heap leach was undertaken to assess and confirm the following:1) To confirm that heap leach technology now currently used in the United States could be applicable to Canadian sites.2) To confirm gold recovery by the Heap Leach technology3) To assess and study potential heap leach environmental concerns in cold and wet climate.PROJECT LOCATIONThe Hope Brook Project is located near the southern coast of the island of Newfoundland, approximately 100 kilometers southeast from Stephenville, approximately 25 kilometers west of Burgeo, Newfoundland. Access to the property is limited to helicopter, float plane or by sea through Couteau Bay. The property was covered with muskeg and very few trees. Surface relief was moderate with many poorly drained boggy sections confined to small areas. Many small unnamed lakes were located on the property which provided water to small brooks and streams flowing to Couteau Bay.Several locations were reviewed for the installation of the pilot heap leach facility. Important parameters used to select a suitable location included sufficient land area, close proximity to but not on the ore body, reasonable protection from wind, sufficient supply of fresh water, close to a suitable location for a portable crushing plant, reasonable access to aggregate material for preparation of the test pad and ponds and suitable contours to minimize site preparation."

"The applicability of a hydrocyclone model to simulation of the cyclone banks in a multi-stage sandplant circuit producing mine back fill has been demonstrated. The model ha~; been used in conjunction with a modular computer program for circuit simulation in order to study the effect of changes in the operating conditions. It has been shown that weight recovery to sand fill increases as feed percent solids decreases, and, to a lesser extent as pressure drop across the banks increases. An increase in apex diameter also causes an increase in weight recovery. Increased weight recovery must, however, be balanced against sump an1l cyclone capacity and dilution of sand fill by fines. The predicted results from circuit simulation were in good agreement with plant data.The model has been found to be applicable to widely different ores."
