The Carlin Gold Mining Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Newmont Mining Corporation has been successfully operating an open pit gold mine and cyanide mill for approximately the past ten years. It is a unique operation in that about 20 percent of the mill feed is a carbonaceous ore refractory to cyanidation that must undergo a pretreatment stage developed for, and by, Carlin. The mine and plant are located in the Tuscarora mountain range is north-eastern Nevada near the towns of Carlin and Elko. Claims were staked at the minesite in 1961 and 1962. A drilling program was initiated late in 1962 and after drilling a total of 250,000 feet of rotary drill holes an estimated 9,300,000 tons of ore at a grade of 0.32 ounces of gold per ton was delineated.

The procedure to arrive at an energy efficient autogenous grinding plant is carried out in the following steps: First Step - Determine power requirements to grind a particular ore. This work carried out on small samples ground in a 450 mm diameter Aerofall Hill and the results are checked against a standard Bond Index test. Second Step - A bulk sample from the ore zone is ground in a 1.8 m diameter pilot mill. This work is carried on until the power objectives as indicated from the first step have been realized. Third Step - Correlate the pilot mill data, with the data from the numerous samples ground in the small 450 mm mill and arrive at design criteria for the commercial plant. Ensure commercial mill design will be suitable to obtain similar results as those obtained in the pilot mill.

"When most people think “miner,” they picture an older white man in a dusty shirt and suspenders. He’s holding a gas lamp and a pickaxe, peering at the walls of a dimly lit cavern. This image, while steeped in heritage, is no longer representative of what mining is: a global, increasingly diverse industry.It’s an industry made up of individuals like Zambian-born Chushi Mwewa, PE, president of Southlands Engineering, LLC in the United States and managing director of Southlands Engineering Limited in Zambia; Navajo tribe member Peter Denetclaw, manager of environmental programs and Navajo relations at Freeport-McMoRan; and Chinese and Jewish Alyssa Hom, a project engineer at McCarthy Building Companies.According to the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economics, 168 out of the world’s 195 recognized countries have some mining or mineral resources activity, and the mining industry directly employs more than 25 million people across the globe.However, according to McKinsey & Company’s 2017 “Women in the Workplace” study, white males hold 67 percent of C-Suite positions and 70 percent of senior vice president positions in the corporate world, and mining is no different. This uniformity among leadership has been tied to lower levels of employee engagement, innovation and business growth. The bottom line is this: Diversity is good for business. The question industry leaders must now ask themselves is not “Will we promote diversity?” but “How will we promote diversity efficiently and permanently?”More than 80 industry professionals, consultants and students gathered to discuss this question and share stories at the “Developing Diversity in Mining” workshop organized by the University of Arizona’s Lowell Institute for Mineral Resources (IMR), held during the 2017 SME Arizona Conference in December 2017.Brad Ross, co-director of the IMR and one of the facilitators of the workshop, said he felt diversity was important to discuss because he has witnessed its benefits throughout his career in the mining industry.“By creating a team of people with different experiences and perspectives, a company is better equipped to see the big picture and to creatively tackle problems,” he said. Speakers from industry and academia,including Mwewa, Denetclaw and Hom discussed the challenges surrounding achieving diversity and inclusion as well as the roles and responsibilities of different stakeholders."

"A slurry is any combination of liquids and solids where solids make up more than 10 percent of the mixture. Mining operations create various types of slurries from processes such as dewatering, bitumen extraction in oil sands, concentrator plants, milling operations, tailings, lime addition and so on. The mines then transport these slurries through pipelines (Fig. 1).Slurry valves are used when the mine needs to transport ore a long distance and there are no other viable transportation methods, such as roads or railroads.Severe service valves must be used in slurry applications and they must be tested to ensure reliability. This article describes how Emerson designs and tests its Fisher valves for use in mining slurry applications.Slurry pipeline valvesWithin a slurry pipeline system, valves are required as part of the pumping stations, choking stations and isolation stations. There may be multiple pumping stations depending on the length of the pipeline or the terrain it crosses. Choking stations are used to reduce the velocity and the pressure in the pipeline, either before a pumping station or at the end of the pipeline, and to ensure the pipeline does not slack (remains full and pressurized). Isolation stations exist so that a pig (a device sent through a pipeline to clean or inspect the pipe) can be inserted or removed from the pipeline.Typical valves used in a slurry pipeline are severe service ball valves. The valves use floating balls that are held between the seats and are not pinned or permanently attached to the shaft that rotates the ball. The inside diameter of the ball typically matches the pipeline inside diameter, enabling the pipeline to be cleaned or inspected with a pig.They can be built to accommodate the high pressures required for the typical slurry pipeline. These pressures can require up to ASME Class 2500 valves and flanges. The valves can get qlarge, up to NPS 36 inches.Specialized segmented ball valves and slurry knife gate valves are also used in some slurry applications when pressures are lower, in the ASME Class 150-300 range."

Mining is essentially a materials management process where materials are classified, excavated, moved to a desired location, processed at a cost and sold for a price hopefully to generate a profit. ?How much is that cost and can it be reduced?? is the age-old question. The requirement for a paradigm shift with regard to materials movement in search of low-cost production has not just happened by chance but, rather, has been driven by agents of change that include mining companies, consultants, governments and equipment suppliers. During the past 100 years of mining, surface mining technology has involved humans with hand tools, humans with machinery and unmanned automated equipment. In the past 50 years, surface mining technology has evolved and now takes the form of trucks and loaders (TL), in-pit-crushing conveying (IPCC) and autonomous haulage equipment (AHS).

Bright-orange couplings adorning piping systems are a common sight in just about every underground mine in North America. Grooved mechanical piping, the pipe-joining system that utilizes these couplings, is the preferred method for joining underground and plant piping systems in the mining industry, due to the ease and speed of installation and maintenance. However, the applications for such systems have traditionally excluded high-pressure systems. Most grooved mechanical couplings have a moderate working-pressure limitation, so high-pressure systems have required the use of alternative joining methods, typically heavy-duty flanges. However, the introduction of high-pressure couplings (up to 4,000 psi) has made the grooved joining method viable, and even preferable, for backfill, deep-mine chilled water and dewatering lines and other high-pressure piping applications. As engineers explore the use of high-pressure couplings, questions will undoubtedly arise about the joining method?s capabilities. This article will address the capabilities and specifications of high-pressure couplings, and compare flanged and grooved mechanical pipe joining in traditional as well as high-pressure underground mining applications.

"In the global mining industry, there are those who seem resigned to the fact that the mining industry has always operated according to certain time-tested principles that don’t involve jumping on every new technological trend. Others expect that mines will soon have autonomous electric vehicles running around the clock. The truth lies somewhere in the middle. In business, as in life, that is usually the best path to follow.The instant access to people and information provided by 21st-century technology continues to push businesses in all industries toward greater efficiency and unheard-of levels of modernization. And in the world of mining, the embrace of advanced technology is all about managing risk.However, even in this age of digital information overload, some mine sites still require employees to physically download data from individual trucks to monitor payload data and inspect road conditions using a clipboard. What’s more baffling is that other mine sites still have no way of tracking tons moved at all.This isn’t due to a lack of innovation in the industry. Quite to the contrary, there is an abundance of new technology available that provides real-time monitoring of vehicle movements and tracks road conditions without the intervention of people. So why are owners reluctant to embrace advances in mining tech?Gauging the value of changeSurvey data has traditionally been captured by ground laser scans and LIDAR systems. A mine site surveyor would drive around the pit with a truck-mounted scanner to generate a point cloud. This process would be completed every few days and would take an entire day.The many cons of this method far outweigh the pros. First, it provides no visual data. If an operation has moved beyond the roller wheel and tape measure, visual pit models and LIDAR scans are typically completed once every six to 12 months by an aerial flyover, but such sporadic information gathering isn’t likely to result in the most actionable data. Moreover, given the high cost (in terms of both money and time), the numerous safety and liability issues, and the lack of flexibility in scheduling, manual processes are more trouble than they are worth.Overall, while miners are excellent operators who value innovation, their employers often try to outsource it or acquire innovators instead of investing in existing technology that can improve current operations. Tunnels and underground projects are inherently more risky than vertical projects, which typically utilize more conventional design and construction approaches and are undertaken in the context of relatively ascertained and defined conditions. On tunnel and under-ground projects, there are a host of special risk factors, including unknowns and uncertainties as to the physical and behavioral characteristics of the ground, the inextricable interdependence and necessary interaction of design decisions and construction means and methods with those ground conditions as well as the manner in which risks are allocated among project participants for un-anticipated subsurface conditions. Public-private partnerships (PPP) projects, in their own respects (and independent of any major subsurface component), pose significant risk for all private sector participants. The main driver of owners to procure projects using PPP is financial, as often all, or substantially all, of the design and construction risk are transferred to the private sector consortium, including the design-build (D-B) team. For a concerning number of those public owners, that risk transfer regime includes rather onerous and aggressive contractual terms that allocate to the private sector participants substantially all risks associated with the encountering of unanticipated subsurface conditions. These aggressive risk allocation provisions, while directly impacting project participants upstream of the consulting engineer, have an indirect and corresponding risk intensifying effect upon consulting engineer professional liability exposure. There are many factors that result in increased professional liability exposure for consulting engineers involved in PPP projects. The more prominent and prevalent of those factors fall into the following categories:

The mining and minerals extraction industries have often been demonized by the public as industries that put profits and production before people. It is true that the inherent danger of the work has led to more fatal accidents than anyone associated with the industry would care to remember. But, in stark contrast to what has often been said, the truth of the matter is safety is now the top priority of every miner, from the face of the longwall to the executive boardroom. Without safety, nothing else matters. This message was told and retold by representatives from some of the world?s top mining and petroleum companies from Oct. 11-13 during the inaugural Safety and Reliability in the Mining and Resources Industries Conference in Calgary, Canada. The meeting was hosted jointly by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) and the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME). It was the first of a series of conferences to focus on these important topics. Next year, the conference will be held in Minneapolis, MN from Nov. 13-15.

There is a natural resistance to change in any form. When it comes to implementing a game-changing technology like autonomous haulage on an operating mine site, the resistance can at times appear insurmountable. Whether based on real information or misguided preconceptions, it?s essential that we don?t underestimate the effort it will take to overcome this resistance, while clearly recognizing when it?s worth the effort. These realizations did not happen overnight for sites where autonomous haulage has been implemented. Nor did they happen overnight for manufacturers of autonomous mining equipment. Caterpillar, for example, began building toward autonomy more than 30 years ago and had a truck operating in the mid-1990s. Lessons learned during those early years led to the realization that there was much more to be learned ? not just about the machines themselves, but about the systems and knowledge that must be in place for a successful implementation. Working closely with customers, initiating real-life demonstrations on mine sites, having discussions with regulatory agencies and other stakeholders ? these and many other activities were necessary before autonomy could be fully and successfully launched. After decades of effort, Caterpillar?s first official commercial autonomous mine site went to work in 2011 in Farmington, NM.

Principal component analysis (PCA) is one of the dimension reduction techniques widely used to classify data based on features. Ground vibration is a major hazard arising from rock blasting operations, and accurate prediction of the vibration is necessary for designing controlled blasting parameters. Most of the widely accepted predictors of ground vibration consider the maximum explosive charge weight per delay (MCPD) and distance as the parameters responsible for ground vibration, but mining sites with bigger production targets have varying geometrical parameters to suit the excavator utility. Accordingly, other blast design parameters will also have impacts on ground-vibration intensity. A blast vibration predictor considering all the blast design parameters would be complicated, and some of the parameters will have overlapping contributions to ground-vibration intensity. Data classification using PCA is a feasible solution, and regression analysis may be performed to develop predictors using the classified input data. In this study, PCA was used along with multivariate logarithmic regression to predict ground vibration, and the performance of this technique to predict ground vibration was compared with the performances of various existing empirical predictors. The evaluation suggests that the predictor with logarithmic regression followed by PCA performs better than the existing empirical predictors.

Estimating ground-water inflows in rock deep tunnels is critical to the safety of personnel constructing the tunnel and the cost of construction. This paper presents two case studies, including the Chattahoochee and Nancy Creek tunnels, for estimating steady-state ground-water inflows into deep rock tunnels. Statistical methods were applied to packer test data obtained from exploratory borings during geotechnical site investigations, and a semiempirical procedure was used to estimate ground-water inflows. The Chattahoochee and Nancy Creek tunnels are deep rock tunnels that exhibit radial flow conditions. For the radial flow condition, a statistical analysis presented in this paper indicates that the semiempirical procedure works well; however, variations in the procedure and/or an insufficient amount of testing could lead to underestimations of the inflow quantities. Modeling using Monte Carlo simulations was observed to be an effective tool for removing data distribution irregularities and incorporating high-end permeability data to derive reasonable ground-water inflow estimates.

This study aims to investigate the effect of combined mechanical and ultrasonic milling on the size reduction of talc. First, the talc sample was wet-ground in a stirred media mill for five different lengths of time (30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 min), and the optimum result was subsequently achieved with treatment by ultrasonication. The effects of amplitude (20, 35 and 50 µm), solid ratio (2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10 percent), and sonication time (60, 120 and 240 min) on the sizes of the final product were investigated. The pre-milling by wet grinding caused a decrease in the grinding resistance of talc. Sequential ultrasonic treatment, which was applied to the talc sample, generated smaller particles in comparison to those acquired by stirred media milling alone. Experimental results were assessed based on the product particle size (d10, d50 ), reduction ratio and specific energy consumption. Submicron particles prepared by ultrasonic treatment were highly stable compared to stirred media milling alone as investigated in terms of particle size. In addition, the effects of mechanical and ultrasonic milling on the structural properties of talc particles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis.

The classification of rock and coal will assist in automated coal rib rating and shearer horizon control, and is studied with machine learning techniques in this work. A database of rock and coal images is created by filtering photographs taken by researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The classifier was trained with patches extracted from the coal and rock images, and an accuracy score of 0.9 was obtained. The trained classifier was then applied to classify rock from a new coal rib image with three rock layers of different thicknesses, and good agreement was achieved. The results demonstrate that it is promising to use machine learning techniques and rib images for rock and coal classification.

Surface mining accounts for most coal production in Indian geo-mining conditions compared with underground methods, whose implementations are in deeper coal reserves and for lower stripping ratio in a congested operating space. The bord-and-pillar method is the preferred underground method in India for reasons of flexibility and investment cost. While previous researchers conducted field investigations on intact overburden conditions, this study focuses on the strata control issues in a bord-and-pillar depillaring working under the influence of the dead-load condition of voluminous and fragmented softcover of overburden dump material. The modeling results helped in ascertaining the criticality of strata behavior and rib-pillar stability in actual mining conditions when compared with the conventional intact overburden.
