THE increased use of sintering for the beneficiation of iron ores and the reclaiming of flue dust creates a lively interest in sintering costs and, economics. The character of material sintered and geographical location of plants so radically alter sintering costs and economics that it is well to understand at least the basic elements which control such changes. The following cost factors are believed to be roughly approximated for large-scale Dwight-Lloyd 'continuously operated sinter-machine installations located anywhere. WHEN a single crystal is annealed following plastic deformation recrystallization usually occurs rather than polygonization. Consequently, re-crystallization has received the overwhelming amount of attention albeit the intrinsic mechanisms by which dislocations rearrange and annihilate one another are just as well revealed by crystal polygonization. It is the purpose of this note to demonstrate the usefulness of studying the polygonization process by means of an etch-pit technique in sodium chloride. Sodium chloride deforms easily (the slip system is of the [110], (110) type), readily cleaves on (100) planes, and can be chemically etched so as to reveal the intersection of dislocations with a free surface. Thus it is possible to observe the distribution of dislocations after a crystal has undergone a specific deformation and annealing cycle. Various phases of the polygonization process

Forecasting demand is an art as well as a science, and much personal judgment is required. National forecasts made for sand and gravel, crushed stone, and/or aggregate may be misleading or unhelpful locally. This is because of significant variation in demand within different geographic and/or political areas in the US, and/or the use of an inadequate data base and forecasting methodology. The best forecasts may be made for local or regional market areas, irrespective of geographic or political boundaries, provided a proper data base is available.1 The Bureau of Mines compiles detailed statistics on commodities sold or used in the construction industries and, therefore, is in an advantageous position to make national aggregate demand forecasts. Definitions of some terms used in this presentation are necessary before proceeding.

A large amount of time has been devoted to the microscopical study of the copper-zinc alloys, emphasis naturally being placed upon the commercially important alloys of the system. Suitable methods are available for microscopically recognizing the two phases richest in copper, but none appear to have been developed for the positive identification of the other phases. This is, however, accomplished, for the phases normally encountered, by an electrolytic method described in the following pages. Five phases of the copper-zinc diagram (Fig. I) are considered for the purpose of this paper: the solid solution of zinc in copper, alpha (a); the intermediate phases, beta (ß), gamma (?), and epsilon (e); and the solid solution of copper in zinc, eta (11). The recently completed liquid sulfur dioxide plant at American Smelting and Refining Co.'s Tacoma copper smelter in Washington last April is one step by the firm to meet ambient air quality standards in the vicinities of its three US copper smelters. At a capital cost of $18.5 million, the liquid SO2 plant will work together with an existing sulfuric acid plant to treat all gases generated by the copper converters. Designed to handle up to 45,000 cfm of converter gas utilizing the Dimethylaniline (DMA) process, this plant is expected to recover about 51% of the total smelter input.

The titanium-rich end of the Ti-A1 system has been investigated up to 35 at. pct A1 (23 wt pet). One conzpound Ti3Al was found to occur between primary a and TiAl. It is ordered hcp with DO19 structure, it has virtually no solid-solubility range, and it has a closed maximum at about 875°C. OIL either side of the compound are a +Ti3Al two-phase fields. The limiting a1uminum solubility in primary a at the titanium-rich end is indicated to be 7.5 at. pct A1 (4.4 wt pet) at 550°C and about 6.8 at. pct Al fl wt pct) at 500°C. Quenching alloys from above the a + Ti3Al two-phase field produces the following structures with respect to alloy composition: Up to 13 at. pct A1 (7.8 wt pet), a solid solution; from 15 to 18 at. pct A1 (9 to 11 wt pct), shear transformation product or martensite; from 19 to approximately 30 at. pct (11 to 19 wt pet), submicro-scopic coherent Ti3Al in an a malvix. The twin hcp phase fields reported in the literature are the result of nonequilibrium corzdztions. Ti-A1 alloys, once partitioned by dwelling- in the a + ß phase field during either hot working or heat treatment, are extremely difjicult to homogenize at temperatures below 1000°C. Such partitioned alloys exhibit the characteristics or symptoms of two-phase materials, and may be said to suffer the "twin-phase syndrome". THE earliest investigations of the Ti-A1 system by Ogden et al.1 and Bumps et al.2 reported wide solubility of the primary solid solutions. Aluminum was reported soluble in the low-temperature allomorph to the extent of 37 at. pct (25 wt pct), and the first intermediate phase was reportedly TiA1. Somewhat later Kornilov et al.3 reported a similar diagram with phase boundaries displaced towards lower aluminum contents and higher temperatures. Beginning about this time (1956) reports in the literature made it very clear that one or more intermediate phases occurred at lower aluminum contents than TiAl.4-17 These reports included five major investigations of the titanium-rich end of the Ti-A1 diagram.4,12,14,16,17 Three of these diagrams show two two-phase fields below 37 at. pct Al, while two of them show a single two-phase field. The existence of the phase Ti3A1 is firmly established and is included in each of the diagrams, except one—that of Sato and Huang.12 The new phases are reportedly hcp and differ from primary a only slightly when disordered, and when ordered the "a" parameter is approximately one,4,12,15 two, 6-10,13,14 or four14 times that for primary a. Beyond this, however, the diagrams are remarkable for their lack of agreement. Two tacit assumptions are usually made in phase-diagram determinations of metal systems. These are: 1) equilibrium anneals bring the alloy to equilibrium or to indistinguishable closeness to it, and 2) equilibrium conditions established at elevated temperatures are either "frozen" by rapid quenching for evaluation at room temperature, or quench-transformation products are recognized as such. In the current investigation evidence was obtained that over substantial composition ranges neither of these two conditions was met in any of the more recent major investigations. I) MATERIALS, METHODS, AND TECHNIQUES The alloys of this investigation were prepared by nonc on sum able electrode arc melting. Materials used in the preparation of the alloys are summarized in Table I. The investigative tools employed were: optical and electron microscopy, differential thermal analysis (DTA), disatometry, X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction, and resistometry. Alloys for microscopic and X-ray investigations were prepared as 15-g melts. Alloys containing from 7 through 11 at. pct A1 were hot-rolled out of a furnace at 900°C, from 12 through 15 at. pct out of a furnace at 1000°C, and from 16 through 18 at. pct out of a furnace at 1125°C. Alloys containing more than 18 at. pct A1 could not be hot-rolled. The ingots were covered with Markal coating prior to hot rolling to minimize atmospheric contamination. IN the geophysical exploration program of the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. on the Marquette Range of Northern Michigan, the vertical intensity magnetometer has been used to obtain magnetic anomaly maps of large areas. A network of magnetic base stations has been established and the relative vertical intensity at each station measured carefully with respect to a prime base. In the search for the relatively nonmagnetic soft red hematite ore, the magnetic exploration is indirect, involving the study of dikes, faults, contacts, and other structural features. It was found that the, magnetometer, adjusted to a scale value of approximately 40 y per scale division, was satisfactory for this type of exploration, although many magnetic anomalies were encountered that required the use of auxiliary magnets.

Many years ago the late Sir Frederick Bramwell, a distinguished engineer, formerly in charge of the metallurgical and gun-making department of the Woolwich Arsenal, England, determined to break up a large number of cast-iron mortars of an obsolete type that had been in stock for years. It was then reported to biro that it was found to be much more difficult to break these old gun castings under the "drop" than it was to break similar gun-castings recently made, under his own supervision; he changed the.. composition of the iron and still found that whenever castings made recently were broken up (on account perhaps of superficial defects) great disparity was observed in apparent strength between the old and new castings. An empirical criterion is presented for use in estimating the strength of heavily jointed or weathered rock masses. This criterion incorporates the intact strength of the rock material and introduces two dimensionless parameters m and s which characterize the behaviour of the interlocking particles in a jointed rock mass. The use of rock mass classification systems for estimating the values of these parameters is discussed. The application of this non-linear failure criterion to the analysis of slopes is illustrated by means of a worked example.

US mine-related fatalities were reduced by 10.3% at metal and nonmetal operations in 1974, according to a report by the Secretary of the Interior to Congress concerning the administration of Public Law 89-577. While there was no significant change in the overall injury experience, the 157 fatalities were the lowest recorded in the mining industry since federal mine inspections began under the Act in 1970. The report attributes this reduction to the "improvement in the quality and increased size of the inspection force as well as the continuing emphasis on mine safety conditions and practices." The year 1974 represents the first full calendar year in which the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA) had responsibility for administration of the Federal Metal and Nonmetallic Mine Safety Act, and the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. Prior to MESA's establishment in 1973, these functions were delegated to the US Bureau of Mines. Research activities in health and safety were continued by the Bureau in 1974.

NOTE ON HAALCK'S FORMULA QUANTITATIVE interpretation of magnetic anomalies is admittedly a difficult process. Few authors have attempted a general approach to this problem. A [ ] number of publications can be found widely scattered through scientific periodicals, which present particular solutions obtained by the introduction of simplifying assumptions, such as the reduction to an equivalent magnet or pole, or the hypothesis of a very thin vein. The practical applications of these solutions are necessarily very restricted though they have given satisfactory results in isolated cases. Probably the most widely known equation of this type was given by Haalck.l His classic work contains curves calculated for typical conditions, and has now become a standard reference. However, a close scrutiny of Haalck's derivation reveals that, aside from the hypothesis of a thin vein, it rests on the

CONSIDERABLE work has been and is being done on the changes of physical properties that take place in alloys at elevated temperatures, and much information on this subject is published. Much less is known, as pointed out by Rickett and Wood,1 about reactions between the alloys and atmospheric gases and still less is known about changes within the alloy itself under the influence of heat and given atmosphere. Moreover, most of the work published has been done on the alloys of "heat-resist-ing" type, in which chromium is an essential ingredient, the behavior of all other alloys being quite unknown, except perhaps of decarburization produced at the surface by oxidizing atmospheres. It has been shown' that iron, with total amount of foreign ingredients not exceeding 0.01 per cent, if heated in an oxidizing atmosphere at above 900° C., may be saturated with oxygen to 0.1 per cent. It was suspected that something of a similar nature may take place in iron-silicon alloys (transformer material), the mechanism of such processes being either a direct diffusion of oxygen into the alloy, or oxygen combining with silicon to form Si02 or more complicated (silicate) inclusions. Another possi-bility to be considered was that during annealing in oxidizing atmos-pheres, when scale is being formed, silicon may oxidize preferentially at the surface, thus impoverishing the alloy in silicon. In collaboration with Dr. T. D. Yensen,3 the writer set out to investigate this problem about two years ago in order to settle these questions.

IT has been discovered by skilled bell founders, more through experience than from geometrical calculation (although calculation does enter), that a certain relationship of dimensions in both large and small bells makes the tone and the weight almost certainly what is desired. This is in addition to the customary shape which is, according to the historians, perhaps that found by the first discoverers of bells. Among themselves bell founders have made a rule of these measurements and have called it the bell scale. Beginning with the small ones weighing ten pounds, it increases by degrees to a point where, as I have seen, they are able to make them even twenty-five and thirty thousand pounds. This scale is of great enlightenment if one does not have a bell already made for comparison.

One of the great copper-producing areas of the world is comprised of five U. S. western states and northern Sonora, Mexico. The Southwest province of this area, covering southern Arizona, south- western New Mexico, and northern Sonora, produces some 55 pct of U. S. copper output and the equivalent of 15 pct of world production. In 1956 the area produced about 550,000 tons. Tucson is approximately the center of the oval- shaped province, which measures only 300 miles on its east-west axis and about 200 miles on its short axis. Northwest of the oval, and forming a tenuous connection with the Utah and Nevada copper fields, is an important operating mine, Bagdad, and also the now inactive United Verde. Along its north- south axis, running from Globe, through Tucson, to Nogales, ten moderate to major copper properties have been discovered or revived during the past 15 years, and five of these in only the past seven years. The latter five properties lie in an area 25 miles in diameter, centering 20 miles south of Tucson. In order of discovery, or revival, they are: Banner's Mineral Hill and Daisy; Cyprus et al's Pima; Duval's Esperanza; Asarco's East Pima (now called Mission mine) ; and Lewisohn's Peach. Total tonnage is estimated at about 250 million tons averaging some 0.90 pct Cu, but ultimate production may exceed this amount since some of the reserve is open ended.
