The theme of this paper is the development of-the project feasibility study which includes discussion of the work which is carried out in preparing the project feasibility study, the necessary evaluations and structures that are employed to ensure that not only does the feasibility study itself stand up to scrutiny and is sound, but also that the investment the company is proposing to develop, "the project", is an investment decision which will represent good returns to the company. This theme is particularly relevant when there are competing divisions within the company and only limited cash resources are available to make the correct investment decision. Thus various potential investments may be evaluated against each other to determine which project will be given the go ahead for development. This paper will particularly focus on the various investment analysis techniques that are used and discuss the work that is required in preparing the project feasibility study and specifically the interaction of the project team members and the thought process that must be undertaken to complete the project feasibility study. Finally comments will be made on tax planning issues particularly with respect to taxation of gold production to be introduced in January 1991. Some ideas are presented which may help and possibly improve the financial position of the projects being reviewed. Further, it is suggested that the thought process which goes with the financial engineering aspects of a resource project can be widened to take account of taxation issues and tax planning to ensure the rise of the project feasibility and hence the decision to proceed to development by the project sponsors.

Cadmium occurs in the Broken Hill Lode essentially as a camouflaged element, substituting diadochically for zinc in the sphalerite.Analyses of a series of zinc concentrate flotation products, prepared from samples of ore taken at intervals throughout the developed lengths of the several orebodies forming the lode, have revealed a pattern in the distribution of cadmium relative to zinc. This pattern appears to reflect the temperature and order of deposition of the several orebodies, and the direction of movement of the mineralizing solutions.INTRODUCTIONThis investigation into the distribution of cadmium in the several orebodies of the Broken Hill lode was undertaken by the Mineragraphic Section. of C.S.I.R.O. in conjunction with the Broken Hill Geological Research Committee, as part of a study of Broken Hill mineralization.It arose from the examination of cadmium and zinc assays supplied by Mr. T. A. Read, Chief Metallurgist of the Broken Hill South Ltd.; of experimental zinc concentrates prepared from localized samples of the No, 2 and No. 3 orebodies in the Broken Hill South Mine. These assays suggested that the two orebodies were characterized by distinctive ZnjCd ratios.In view of the possible sigmficanc'e of such a difference, comparable data were sought from each of the other mines. The necessary samples of ore were collected by the geological staffs of the several mines. The preparation of separate zinc concentrates and lead concentrates from these samples, and their assaying, was conducted by Mr. Evan Hardy, for the North Broken Hill Mine, and its assodated leases, and by Mr. D., Swan, under the direction of Dr. J. Flyrock is the unexpected and undesirable projection of rock fragments during detonation of a blast and managing this risk is becoming an increasing challenge as urban development encroach toward mineral extraction sites. The basic factors associated with flyrock are discussed in relation to geology, blast design and management. Published data of historical flyrock events are investigated and compared with local information on incidents. Good agreement was found between the data sets. A computer program of flyrock was developed using projectile motion based on launch velocity and angle, rock size, shape and density. This deterministic model was coupled with a probability model to simulate blast events. The impulse time ?t of the explosive pressure was taken as the stochastic variable to replace launch velocity. The variables were calibrated to replicate field data. A simulation was executed to demonstrate the capability of the approach to defining flyrock danger zones. For a simplistic situation it was identified that an appropriate distance to be cordoned off for the blast danger zone is a radius of 120 m in front of the blast and 65 m behind.

With the depleting iron reserves and difficult market conditions, precision in separation efficiency is of utmost importance. Classical local control options are predominant in the industry, but their inability to adjust to resolve application problems of interest has furthered the need of developing and implementing continuous control methodologies.This paper highlights the recent development in control of Outotec SLon® vertically pulsating high gradient magnetic separator (VPHGMS) including programmable logic controllers (PLC) coupled with distributed control system (DCS), on-site human–machine interface (HMI) control panel, advanced process control, continuous online sampling using Courier® 8 and additional modernisation packages including level control and cooling monitoring. Water use and wastewater management is becoming a focus for many industries around Australia and the rest of the world. Good quality water is increasingly being recognised as a precious resource, and regulations on the bulk storage and discharge of waste streams is becoming more stringent in order to protect the environment, existing water reserves and the communities that use these resources. Components such as heavy metals, arsenic, cyanide, and sulfate from acid mine drainage are some that occur at mining and metallurgical processing sites. Removal of such components can allow safe re-use of these streams, reducing the new water requirements of the process, or else allowing acceptable discharge to the environment. Re-use or discharge of treated water eliminates or reduces the risk associated with storage of large volumes of contaminated water on site.Technologies where a contaminant is selectively precipitated and removed as a sludge are used for many of these treatments. Selection of the best treatment option for wastewater must depend on what is suitable to each site, and consider not only the nature of the contaminant, but also other aspects, including the location and situation of the site, local regulations, cost of reagents, the sensitivity of the local environment and waste sludge disposal options. Conventional flotation technology has historically failed to achieve high recoveries when treating <15 µm particles (Lynch et al, 1981). The new StackCell™ flotation technology was developed to specifically target this particle size range, and was tested at pilot plant scale at Mt Keith Nickel Concentrator. The streams tested, Slimes Rougher Tailings and Fines/Slimes Cleaner Tailings, represent 21% and 11% of the total nickel lost to tailings in the plant. Laboratory scale test work indicated that an economically significant fraction of these losses was consistently available to be recovered by additional flotation. The pilot plant experimental scope included over 50 tests. A grade recovery curve for each stream was developed, as well as information on the effect of ore type, feed rate, wash water, air flow, collector and frother on the performance of the cell. The single StackCell was able to achieve nickel recoveries of 16.8% and 16.5% on the Rougher Tailings and Cleaner Tailings, respectively, at grades consistent with these blocks. Additional test work of the StackCell in a cleaner scalper duty yielded final quality concentrate with a maximum nickel recovery of 59.5% for the single stage StackCell. Laboratory scale simulation of the downstream impacts of the StackCell operating as a cleaner scalper indicated a net recovery benefit of up to 2.0% for this cleaner block.Tests were completed to compare residence time requirements of the StackCell, as compared to conventional flotation. In 55 seconds, the pilot plant StackCell achieved 50% of the recovery of a 960 second laboratory scale conventional flotation on the same feed material. The apparent improvement in flotation kinetics is attributed to the novel high intensity aeration system, which provides efficient bubble-particle contact thereby shortening the residence time required to achieve high recoveries. The smaller footprint and lower energy costs of such a cell are also benefits of this technology, which is being considered for industrial scale installation as a result of this test work. Given the industry’s historical poor performance treating slimes with conventional flotation, it is clearly best practice to challenge the status quo through innovative new technology, such as the StackCell.CITATION:Hussey, L, Thanasekaran, H and Kohmuench, J, 2017. The Gippsland Basin is unique in Australia in that it is a major resource based industry centre within a sensitive and special environmental context supplying Melbourne, a major urban/industrial environment with most of its energy 'on-line'. The environmental effects of the supply systems are generally local and mostly affect only those who are directly or indirectly dependent on the upstream systems. The major urban metropolis which is served remains largely unaware of the environmental impacts of the system upon which it is dependent, except when specific attention is drawn to them as in the case of the Latrobe Valley Outfall, algal blooms in the Gippsland Lakes, etc. This paper discusses the environmental context within which the energy industries operate, the environmental legislative framework which applies, the likely environmental impacts and some solutions. The energy resources of the Gippsland Basin occur in an area where the physical environment exhibits a wide variety of inherent energy states in its physical and biological regimes. The off-shore regions of the oil and gas platforms has to be able to withstand the wind and wave energy generated in a shallow sea in a confined waterway lying athwart the main current and climatic stream. The coastline includes the delicately balanced quiescent environments of Corner Inlet with its 'wilderness' tourism industry and the powerful surf and long shore drift and dunes of Ninety Mile Beach.

Fosterville gold mine recently celebrated production of its one millionth ounce of gold based firmly within a history of refractory sulfide gold mining. Compared with other Victorian gold mines, the disseminated nature of the sulfide gold is a deposit style with low estimation variance combined with established processes to accurately delineate the controlling structures. The systems in place had been established and have worked effectively for the majority of the one million produced ounces.By the end of 2014, diamond drill campaigns targeting the lower Phoenix orebody at depths of 800 m below surface began showing a change to the nature of the gold within the deposit. Coarse visible gold within 0.5–2 m thick quartz carbonate veins were being intersected with regularity showing the emergence of a different zone of gold mineralisation.Data about the new and exciting discovery couldn’t be gathered fast enough, however, established systems and processes throughout the geology and processing departments were not developed to handle a coarse gold environment. Change would be commensurate with the size and scale of the discovery, and new learnings would need to be implemented quickly to keep in front of a mining schedule that was focused on producing tonnes due to the dropping grades of the sulfide ore.Gold assays being returned were showing that the gold nature was different to those of other Victorian deposits. Comparative to the highly nuggety nature of gold found in other Victorian goldfields, the fine grained gold accumulations were dispersed in relatively consistent narrow linear trends grading consistently into the hundreds of grams per tonne. New drill intersections were being returned by the day and research to find developed orebodies that had published information into how to handle such a rapid change yielded few examples.The challenge was to review and set new standards with regards to handling an orebody that transitioned the very nature of the gold being mined. This involved reviewing all steps in the estimation process including data capture and quality control and quality assurance through to mineral liberation through the mill. Difficulties also involved finding analogous orebodies that consisted of both free milling and refractory ores that were dealing with drill assays that were measured as percentages of gold.CITATION:Phillips, N, 2017. Investors, government, media and special interest groups expect to see business environmental and social performance respond and deliver increasing corporate responsibility and sustainability.   Thorough interrogation of business performance using a multi-disciplinary due diligence approach presents a more sophisticated review and benefits beyond the traditional compliance/conformance 'audit' style assessment.   Using a due diligence approach allows assessment through a comprehensive lens which examines potential short- and long-term risks including sometimes less tangible environmental and social liabilities, and informs management, investors and regulators of broader business performance. This approach provides information in a form that business can measure performance in a repeatable and enterprise wide sense.   This paper provides an outline of the due diligence process applied in this way, drawing from lessons learnt and industry based experiences in the due diligence process and the benefits and tools that can  be applied in an environmental and social due diligence business performance assessment

From March to May of 1963, the Bureau of Mineral Resources carried out an experimental aeromagnetic survey at Cobar, New South Wales, to field test a proton-precession magnetometer installation in the Cessna aircraft VH-GEO. The Cobar area was chosen as considerable information was already held on the Earth's magnetic field there, which was known to provide a range of anomalous areas that are not excessively disturbed.A procedure for survey flying and methods for processing data were developed during the survey. Contour maps of the aeromagnetic results were produced in the field. The experimental survey was successful in outlining magnetic anomalies in detail.INTRODUCTIONSince 1951 the Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics (B.M.R.) has carried out an airborne magnetometer exploration programme with DC.3 aircraft carrying fluxgate magnetometer equipment. Recently a proton-precession magnetometer was developed by the Design and Development Group of the B.M.R. for observatory use. One unit modified for airborne use was installed in the Cessna light aircraft, VH-GEO. The Cessna was modified structurally to take the magnetometer, associated bird, and winch gear.The proton-precession magnetometer has many good features.1. In November, 1975, Aberdare North colliery was sealed at the surface to extinguish an open fire underground.The fire had developed from a spontaneous heating in one of the open goaf areas of the mine.The mine was re-entered with normal ventilation methods following the isolation of the working district containing the fire. The isolation was accomplished by remotely sealing the open roadways with lly ash emplaced through boreholes from the surface. A subsequent re-entry operation similarly closed the roadways close to the fire and enabled the re-opening of the sealed district.Most of the mine and the underground equipment was recovered after clearing of numerous falls and production recommenced on 25th October, 1976.

Based on relative CO2, N2, and 3He contents, geothermal systems of the Taupo Volcanic Zone, TVZ, can be subdivided into two major groups: arc-type systems, associated with andesitic magmatism along the eastern boundary of the TVZ, and rift-type systems over its western parts. The highly increased N2/3He, CO2/3He and CO2/Cl ratios of the former are ascribed to entrainment of large proportions of volatiles of subducted, marine sedimentary origin. The largely rhyolitic, rift-type magmas are assumed to have formed from volatile-depleted, residual melts. Correlations of Cl and CO2 with heat contents suggest that formation of the two types of source magmas involves mixing of two end member components: a low-volatile melt with a heat/Cl ratio of 25 Ml/mol (0.7 MJ/g), and a low Cl vapor with a heat/CO2 ratio of 5 Ml/mol. On the basis of these values, the heat associated with andesitic magmas is found to be carried in close to equal parts by both vapor and melt; for the rhyolitic melts the proportion contributed from the vapor is only about 2%. The heat/He ratios of the rhyolitic source magmas for the rift-type geothermal discharges from the TVZ of 0.12¦0.05 Ml/pmol is within the range of 0.05 to 0.2 Ml/pmol of the upper mantle. The higher heat/3He ratios for the arc-related magmas of 0.4¦0.2 Ml/pmol are likely to be due to the high proportions of heat carried in the form of a separate, low 3He vapor phase derived largely from subducted sediments.

As high grade ore deposits are depleted, remaining deposits are generally lower grade and require the mining and processing of larger volumes of material per tonne of product. These low grade deposits often contain a large proportion of barren gangue. Pre-concentration aims to remove this barren material at as coarse a particle size and as early in the process as possible. This has the potential to reduce processing costs, energy and water consumption, increase production and improve resource utilisation.There are several technologies that may be applicable for pre-concentration. This paper looks specifically at bulk ore sorting and how it can be integrated into existing or new mining operations to improve profitability and reduce environmental impact. Bulk ore sorting is the separation of barren gangue from a fully loaded conveyor belt based on the grade as measured or inferred from a sensor measurement. It may be used to increase the production rate through fixed plant capacity, or increase production and/or reduce the size of downstream processing equipment in Greenfield operations. Marginal ore sub-economic reserves may be upgraded, making them economic to treat and improving the resource utilization. Bulk ore sorting could also be used to reduce dilution and ore loss in mining operations by improving grade control, or to separate ore types to treat via different process routes. Development of Process for Beneficiation of Low-Grade Iron Ore Samples from Orissa, India The paper deals with the results of characterisation and beneficiations studies undertaken on two low-grade Indian iron ore samples (IO-1 and IO-2) with a view to develop process for beneficiation of composite of the two samples to a high-grade concentrate, suitable for iron making through pelletisation. Indian iron ores contain relatively high iron but cost effective reduction of alumina within the specified limits has been a challenging task. Characterisation of the samples revealed the ore to be laminated and fine grained with hematite as the major mineral. Clay is the dominating gangue in most of the ore pieces followed by silica. Occasionally goethite and quartz/jasper were recorded. Clay occurs either as patches within the hematite mass or as cavity/fracture fillings. Liberation studies on the representative samples crushed to 2 mm indicated that around 95 per cent of the grains are liberated below 105 micron. Beneficiation of the two individual samples and their composite based on gravity and magnetic separation techniques resulted in products with varying yield and grade of the products. The effects of various process parameters were studied. Granulometry of the feed was observed to be important for improving quality of concentrate. The results of bench-scale studies were validated through pilot-scale continuous trials. Based on the studies undertaken a suitable process was developed for beneficiation of the composite sample, comprising 60 per cent IO-1 and 40 per cent IO-2, to a high-grade product assaying over 65 per cent Fe and material balance was computed. A commercial plant for beneficiation of low-grade iron ore to produce DRI pellet grade concentrate is proposed to be installed.

This paper considers three aspects of cemented fill practice and research in Mount Isa. Firstly, an account is given of the use of Portland cemented hydraulic fill, considering mainly the role and specifications of the fill used but including û brief description of fill preparation and placement. Data resulting from a Portland cemented hydraulic fill sampling, curing and testing campaign covering about 18 months of operating practice are presented, analysed and discussed. These yield information indicating the mode of operation of a fully-automated fill preparation station, as well as a means of comparing field and laboratory strength results. A technique with potential for use as a fill quality control without actual strength testing is also described. Results of a fill research program conducted by the author in Mount Isa since early 1968 are presented, involving both Portland cemented hydraulic fill and alternative, cheaper, additives for cementing hydraulic fill.

We have considered the following characteristics of the crust and upper mantle of the Pacific Belt: seismic wave velocity anomalies, mechanical stress and shear deformation rate fields, heat flow and the pattern of metallogenic provinces of the Belt. It has been noted that there exist certain .regularities in distribution of the above mentioned geophysical characteristics and metallogenic zones within the Belt, displayed by prevalence of the lithophile elements in the Asia-Australian part of the Belt, and of the chalcophile ones within the American part.

WITH the exception of the deposits of the Milburn Cement Co near Dunedin, Wilson's Portland Cement Co., on the Mahurangi River (a short distance north of Auckland), and those of the New Zealand Portland Cement Co., at Limestone Island, the cement. Tesources of New Zealand remain practically undeveloped. The Milburn Company utilizes a mixture of limestone and mud for the manufacture of cement, while Wilson's and the New Zealand Portland Cement companies both have the advantage of a natural cement stock which requires but small additions of highgrade limestone to give the mixture required. The plant and deposits of the New Zealand Portland Cement Co are located in Whangarei Harbour, some six miles from thetownship of Whangarei. The works and dwelling-houses are situated on Limestone Island, which, with an area of 92 acres, and rising to a height of 212 ft., supplies the bulk of the raw material required. In addition to the island, the company possesses a high-grade limestone area of, roughly, four acres, situated on the mainland, 11 miles to the south. A better location for a cement works could not well have been chosen. On the east side of the island there is a deep channel, which never shows less than 18 ft. of water alongside the company's...

With the proving of a mineable orebody at Orlando in May 1961, Peko Mines N.L. was faced with the decision of whether to mill the ore on site or to haul it 25 miles to central facilities at Peko. Orlando was a relatively small orebody, so that it was decided to haul, although no reliable assessment of possible ore haulage costs was available.The necessity for a good haul road was recognised from the beginning and a 17 mile, 12 ft wide, single seal bitumen road was constructed, to link the mine to the Stuart Highway and Peko. The initial selection of 20 ton capacity diesel-powered end-tipping ore carts was made, with the best information available at the time.Since then some 130,000 tons of ore have been carted over a period of 3 years, and this paper presents the experiences of this haulage operation and the lessons learned.A second mine has just been brought into operation at Ivanhoe, 19 miles from Peko. For this haul it was decided to use an ore haulage vehicle of the side tipping road train type, which would cart some 70 tons, or more than three times the load of the vehicles initially selected.Only about 5,000 tons had been hauled at the date of this paper, but preliminary figures indicate a cost 01 1· 65d./ton-mile as against 2·47d. for the smaller vehicles.It would appear that the road haulage of ore from small outlying mines to a central plant can be highly economical, if certain basic rules concerning haul roads and vehicle selection are followed.
