"The reactivity of an enargite mineral electrode was investigated spectroelectrochemically under conditions typically found in alkaline sulfide leach solutions, with pH 11-13 and Na2S additions of 50 and 250 gL-1. A bulk enargite electrode was cycled between 0 and -1,000 mV for each set of solution conditions. Raman spectroscopy was used to determine and compare surface formations against species in mass-balanced EH-pH diagrams generated using STABCAL. Previously, it was determined that arsenic could be selectively leached under alkaline conditions at an average solution potential of -300mV, across the pH range 11-13. Operating under such conditions allowed for the selective leaching of arsenic with elemental sulfur formation. From several of the voltammograms obtained during this current testing, the formation of elemental sulfur appeared at increasingly reducing conditions with increasing sulfide concentration. At high concentrations, copper started to dissolve, possibly as a bisulfide complex, reducing the selectivity of the leach, unlike previous studies. However, the presence of the higher sulfide concentration is also anticipated to prevent passivation by consuming any surface formation of elemental sulfur. This study provides insight into the operating parameters of alkaline sulfide leaching in regards to the selectivity of arsenic leaching, as well as guidance for control of reagents and solution potential and, of course, the need for water treatment afterwards.IntroductionEnvironmental limitations on the pyrometallurgical processing of arsenic-bearing concentrates have forced operations to consider other solutions. Attempts to hydrometallurgically process enargite (Cu3AsS4) fall into two categories: the co-dissolution of arsenic and copper under acidic conditions, and the selective leaching of arsenic under basic conditions. The authors believe that the selective leaching of arsenic is more amenable because it produces a solid copper phase, preferably chalcocite (Cu2S) or covellite (CuS) that could then be processed using conventional methods already in place in the copper and gold industries. Potential leaching methods include alkaline sulfide leaching (Achimovicovica et al., 1999; Anderson and Twidwell, 2008a,b; Tongamp et al., 2009 and 2010), hypochlorite leaching (Vinals et al., 2003; Curreli et al., 2005; Mihaljovic et al., 2007), ammoniacal leaching (Gajam and Raghavan, 1983), and acid leaching (Gow et al., 2014b) with or without fine grinding to mechanically activate the enargite surface and increase normally slow leach reaction kinetics (Achimovicova et al., 1999; Balaz et al., 2000; Balaz and Achimovicova, 2006). The flotation rates for various components were determined by separating the products of bulk flotation into size-specific gravity fractions. The effects of feed size and reagent addition on the flotation response of individual size-specific gravity fractions were evaluated.

This paper reports on mineral facies, ore textures, distribution of iron in sphalerites, and fractionation of sulfur isotopes in the Anvil ore body, Yukon Territory, Canada. Because the detailed structure and stratigraphy, both regional and local, are being studied by the geological staff at the mine and members of the Geological Survey of Canada, these topics will be discussed only briefly. The results of our study of the Anvil ore body have implications on theories of the genesis of ore deposits of this type, and these will be discussed. The Anvil ore body is the largest and most significant of three lead-zinc discoveries in an area of the central Yukon where major lead-zinc deposits were unknown only twenty years ago. The Vangorda deposit consisting of 22 million tons was discovered in 1953, followed in 1954 by the Swim Lakes deposit consisting of 10 million tons. The Anvil deposit, which consists of three ore zones, was discovered in 1964. The total reserve at Anvil mine is 63.5 million tons, with an average grade of 3.4% lead, 5.7% zinc, 0.16% copper and 1.2 ounces of silver per ton. This study is concerned primarily with the number one ore body which is about 2,400 feet long, up to 1,100 feet wide and 300 feet thick.

Research performed by the West Virginia University Coal Research Bureau under the sponsorship of the U. S. Bureau of Mines has demonstrated that coal-ash can be converted into mineral wool insulation of a quality equal to commercial grade mineral wool. An unexpected benefit has been gained due to the discovery that the usual and costly fluxing agents employed when using conventional raw materials are not required when producing mineral wool from coal-ash. Because coal-ash sources are commonly located close to mineral wool marketing areas and because mineral wool is seldom shipped far as a result of its low weight and high volume, the use of coal-ash may offer the mineral wool producing industry profitable opportunities. Moreover, coal-ash produced from experimental limestone based air pollution control processes also yields high quality mineral wool which may aid in retarding corrosion of metals contacted by the wool. In addition, internal fluxing effects and possible sulfur oxide utilization could provide economic advantages to the use of these "modified" ashes.

There has been a long history of ironmaking on the North East coast of England centered around the River Tees. The industry developed here because of the availability of good coking coals to the North in Co. Durham, and the discovery in 1851 of ironstone in the nearby Cleveland Hills, South of the .River. Cleveland ironstone is relatively poor in quality, with an iron content not exceeding h% and high proportion of sulphur and phosphorous. The iron exists in chemical association with alumina and silica, and physical beneficiation processes involve a serious loss in iron unless the upgrading is limited, when the economics of the process become doubtful. Over the years, richer foreign ores have replaced the local ironstone, and the last operating mine was closed in 1964.

Feed-forward control (i.e. the forward flow of information in a control system ) is a simple and flexible approach to over-all control of a ball mill-rake classifier grinding circuit. The system described here uses mill power, feed rate, mill dilution water flow rate, and classifier dilution water flow rate only, to control mill load, throughput, mill solids, and classifier solids as well as classifier overflow grind. The mill load is controlled by a simple feed-back control loop, while mill solids and overflow grind are controlled within close limits by a unique non-linear feed-forward water control system. In effect the control follows a limited mathematical model of the grinding circuit. The configuration minimizes deviations in overflow grind due to changing ore conditions, but since it is open-loop, and the model is not complete, it is affected by changes in total ball charge and liner wear. These effects are fortunately gradual, and changes in the grind can usually be kept to within ± 1% of a target continuously for several days without adjustment. Control adjustments are made with feed-back from laboratory composites. This control system has won enthusiastic operator acceptance; it is easily started up and shut down; grind-outs have been eliminated along with flotation machine flooding and mill spills. Standard measurements and components are used throughout providing a trouble-free system design at a moderate cost.

The concept of initiating a large action-oriented contract, directed toward inherently safe mining systems, was conceived by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in January 1970. At that time we were in the process of establishing research contracts and grants, about 100 of which were let in FY 71 to deal individually with fairly specific technological areas. These projects in the aggregate covered a wide spectrum of health and safety problems. What appeared to be necessary was the creation of a project or program that would provide a focal point for the demonstration of many of the results of this research and also in the action sense culminate with working hardware and systems that could be tested and demonstrated over a fairly long teen. The concept of working demonstrable systems, rather than just a conceptual study, was, felt to be necessary for two significant reasons. In the development of any new system, the translation from concept to working hardware is usually a costly and time consuming process which acts as a deterrent to implementation. Secondly, many decisions in the mining community to change equipment or systems ,are based on first hand observation of the new system, in operational practice, an attitude which is certainly understandable in view of the high capital costs of equipment. "The fortunes of mining companies and their implied value are tied to cycles - both economic and commodity – within which they operate. Hence the determination of appropriate future metal prices is one of the most critical factors faced by mineral valuators especially for advanced projects. Price, and hence revenue, is usually the most sensitive input to the valuation model. Empirical studies of past forecasts show that the success rate for commodity price forecasting is very poor. This paper explores various approaches and comments on their strengths and weaknesses. We conclude that careful evaluation of long-term metal prices is a key element and is hardly a luxury that can be left to simple averages or rules of thumb. INTRODUCTION Discounted Cash Flow (""DCF"") analysis, is well suited for the valuation of advanced mineral development assets, for which there are identified mineral resources and some form of economic assessment (Pre-Feasibility or Feasibility Study). The DCF method is also the most commonly used method for determining value for such assets. It provides a means of relating the magnitude of expected future cash flows from profits (or losses) to the magnitude of the initial cash flow (investment) needed for capital expenditures to purchase or to develop an asset for commercial production. The method proves useful in making investment decisions as it allows for the quantification of the Net Present Value (“NPV”), as well as the Internal Rate of Return (IRR) and Payback Period on initial investment capital. Valuation by its very nature is a forward-looking exercise. The DCF method attempts to estimate the NPV of expected future cash flows, by selecting factors that will likely affect future cash flow based on informed analysis. One of the most critical and sensitive factors is the determination of appropriate future commodity prices. “The variables that have the greatest impact on a DCF evaluation are the reserves, the metal prices, and the discount rate.”1 The determination of future commodity prices for valuation purpose or during M&A negotiations is a hotly contested issue. There are a number of analysts, institutions and specialized commercial data suppliers that provide both short and long-term commodities price forecasts. Also, the use of an aggregated mean for all available forecasts, or consensus forecasted prices for valuation purposes is not uncommon. The methods used in making forecasts for each forecaster may vary and in many cases may not be publically disclosed. Nonetheless, the aggregated mean of all forecasted commodity prices of reputed institutions is usually taken to “represent the market’s view of likely future commodity prices.”"

Lake Dufault Mines, Limited, is located ten miles north of Noranda, Quebec. Following discovery of a copper-zinc orebody late in 1961, metallurgical investigations of diamond drill core were conducted by Lakefield Research Limited during 1962 and 1963. These were followed by pilot-plant tests in May and June of 1964, utilizing underground development ore. Milling operations commenced on August 16, 1964, and reached rated capacity of 1,300 tons per day by October 1, 1964 (Figure 1). Since that time, tonnage was gradually increased to a maximum of 1,400 tons per day and since January 1, 1968, gradually decreased to the present rate of 1,100 tons per day due to an increase in the hardness of the ore. The ore milled from start-up until January, 1968, was mainly massive sulphides, consisting of a complex mixture of iron, copper, zinc and minor amounts of lead sulphides with important associated values in gold, silver and cadmium (aver- age specific gravity 3.8). From January, 1968, until the present, the ore being processed is described geologically as a boxwork of sulphide stringers of chalcopyrite, pyrite and pyrrhotite and some local dissemination in siliceous rhyolite (average specific gravity 2.9) supplemented by the massive copper-zinc ore. The limited size of the orebody and the mining method employed (open stoping by blasthole and slash and bench methods) would have made grade control from the mine difficult and expensive. It was decided to try to cope with grade variations in the mill. The resulting rapid and wide swings in mill heads, hardness and specific gravity have presented many and varied challenges for the mill personnel.

The Piedmont province of the southern Appalachians is becoming the focus of interest for many exploration geologists. In the past, only those deposits with significant surface exposure have been exploited. Thus, few deposits have been found and relatively little exploration has been conducted in recent years. Modern geochemical and geophysical techniques can alleviate this problem of concentrating on exposed ore bodies by allowing us to "look through" the soil and saprolite to detect the presence of significant mineralization at depth. This paper will attempt to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of several geo¬chemical exploration techniques in the Piedmont, of Cabarrus and Stanly Counties, North Carolina. The area chosen for the study is shown in Figure 1, lying almost wholly within the Mt. Pleasant quadrangle, North Carolina. The area is on the eastern boundary between the Charlotte belt, a zone of plutonic and intermediate grade metamorphic rocks, and the Carolina Slate belt, a series of complexly interbedded volcanic and sedimentary rocks of predominantly low grade metamorphism. The area is now considered to be a 500 million year old active, continental margin.1 As is typical of most of the piedmont, outcrop is sparse. Figure 2 is a sketch map of the general geology of the area under study, showing the Charlotte belt rocks in the northwestern quadrant and slate belt rocks, to the east. Within the area are a number of old mines and prospects, the most famous of which are the Furniss and the Phoenix mines in Cabarrus County. All are reported to have contained Au and Cu. Ag and Pb were reported from some. A summary of the deposits is given in Table 1. Data used in this study are from three Master's theses conducted at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. 3,3,6 In separate studies, well waters5, B-zone soils3, and vein and float quartz6 from the area described were sampled and analyzed. Each study concluded separately that geochemical anomalies in the vicinity of the ores justify use of that specific sample type in a geo-chemical exploration program. As global mineral feed grades decline, phosphate beneficiation faces mounting challenges. Chief among these being achieving high recoveries of industry quality concentrates from ores of decreasing quality. Apatite, a critical mineral for meeting global fertilizer demand, remains the primary source of phosphorus and is typically recovered through beneficiation by multi-stage flotation. However, traditional saponified fatty acid collectors lack the selectivity needed to beneficiate these lower quality ores, which are containing a higher concentration of more complex gangue minerals. Enhancing collector performance is essential to the industry moving forward. This study introduces a novel alkyl polyglucoside based surfactant designed as an additive for conventional fatty acid systems. Its incorporation significantly improves the grade recovery in direct apatite flotation, even at low concentrations. Flotation results as well as surfactant properties will be discussed.

Dry magnetic separation of feebly magnetic minerals and wet magnetic separators suitable for highly magnetic minerals have been commercially utilized for a number of years. The beneficiation of magnetic taconite ores by conventional, low intensity magnetic separators in combination with flotation is well established technology (1). However, over the past decade much effort has been expended in developing techniques for the upgrading of feebly magnetic oxidized iron ores (2,5). Such research and development have been stimulated by the limitations of the above-mentioned techniques in application to ores containing fine material; for example, ores requiring fine grinding for liberation or slime-forming ores such as the oxidized taconites or semi-taconites. Wet separation has allowed the reduction of the minim particle size that can be effectively treated from that allowable for high intensity dry magnetic separation. Consequently, the development of high intensity wet magnetic separation methods has received much attention in the search for an effective method to treat the weakly magnetic minerals. Recently Lawver and Hopstock (5) have provided an excellent review of the state of know- ledge of this technology. In addition, a valuable compendium of available laboratory and commercial devices is included. Nonetheless, the feasibility of the use of high intensity magnetic separation in a particular application is largly empirical in nature and requires experimentation to chazacterize the response of a particular ore. The purpose of this paper is to assess the incorporation of high intensity magnetic separation for the beneficiation of a non- sliming specular Michigan hematite. Particular attention is focused on the existence of a lower limit of particle size that can be treated effectively and is inherent in the use of these techniques. Additionally, a rationalization of various models presented in the literature is attempted.

Products unveiled following the Miner Act in 2006 have been upgraded and improved. Saving lives and reducing injuries through better leadership, planning and practice is the goal of every mine professional.

Solution mining projects are conducted through one or more boreholes which penetrate en ore body. Proper drilling, completion and maintenance of the boreholes, therefore, is essential to the success of any solution mining operation. Wells drilled for solution mining encounter problems quite similar to problems encountered by the petroleum industry in drilling, completing and maintaining wells for the production of oil, gas or water. Many of the services developed and much of the experience gained by the petroleum industry is applicable to solution mining wells. As in the petroleum industry, each individual wellbore and ore body in a solution mining project provides its own problems. These vary greatly from well to well, and it is not possible to set down data or outline programs that will apply to all wells. Instead, the design of the drilling, completion, production and maintenance programs should be worked out for each individual well. The purpose of this paper, then, is to generally describe materials, equipment and techniques available for these programs and to discuss the purpose and sequence of their use.

"Acid rock drainage (ARD) is produced when sulfides are exposed to oxygen and water. Oxidation reactions typically result in a depression of pH and leaching of solutes and metals. Many oxidation models have been developed based on oxygen diffusion, but in environments with high permeability, other transport processes (i.e., convection and advection) can play an important role. Multiple sulfide mineral phases with differing oxidation rates should also be incorporated. WROC, a finite-difference model, was developed to account for these factors in predicting ARD. The program includes sulfide mineral oxidation using a shrinking core mechanism, heat transfer by conduction, heat of reaction and oxygen transport by diffusion and advection. The model was validated using data from the literature. After validation, the WROC model was used to simulate several different waste rock scenarios, including different forms of sulfide mineralization and the effect of implementing a waste rock cover. The results demonstrate that including specific sulfide mineral phases can have a significant effect on oxidation and that implementation of a cover can also aid in reducing waste rock oxidation.IntroductionAcid rock drainage (ARD) is a notable environmental concern in areas where rock or other material with acid generation potential is disturbed. ARD is defined as drainage that occurs as a result of sulfide oxidation in rock exposed to air and water. ARD is characterized by low pH, elevated metals concentration (especially aluminum, iron and manganese), sulfate and high total dissolved solids. The low-pH water that results from acid generation is capable of solubilizing heavy metals contained within the rock. The principal sulfide mineral in mine wastes is pyrite (FeS2). Pyrite oxidation is complex and can involve chemical and biological reactions. Oxidation of pyrite by atmospheric oxygen produces one mole of Fe2+, two moles of SO4 2- and two moles of H+ for every mole of pyrite oxidized, as described by Eq. (1)."

By its nature, seismology has been a data intensive field since the first digital computers were introduced in the 1950s. The first empirical models were developed in the same period and are still widely used today, for instance, the Gutenberg-Richter frequency-magnitude relationship (Gutenberg and Richter, 1956). Machine learning (ML) methods make it possible to redefine these empirical models using large datasets and examining considerably more parameters, where their significance to the problem being addressed is methodically and repeatably evaluated using robust statistical methods. In this paper we develop a simple logistic model for the short-term prediction of seismic events above a threshold magnitude from a mine’s event catalogue comprising more than a million events with 14 basic parameters from which a pool of over 830 derived parameters was developed, covering a series of 11 precursory time windows. The logistic model was fitted stepwise using SAS with α = 0.025 for both entry and acceptance. 25 variables from the pool met the acceptance criterion. The findings were surprising in that parameters a rock engineer or seismologist might have expected to be the most significant in the logistic model were not; instead, it was an increase in standard deviation of the immediately-prior seismic magnitudes that carried the most weight, followed by the average maximum source displacement and median apparent volume change. These findings make intuitive sense because the increasing scatter of the magnitude shows an increasing number of large events being recorded that could be indicative of instability in the system that could lead to large events. The model is rudimentary and enormous scope exists for more exploration in terms of data pre-processing, model types, and response variable definitions.

Japan's coal reserves are estimated at 8,583 million tons (according to the materials on X World Energy Conference,. 1976). Japan is a long island country in the shape of an elongated cashew nut whose top is pointing to the north and its lower tip is pointing to the west. And her major coal fields are located in the two extreme far parts of Hokkaido in the north and Kyushu in the south. On the other hand, Japan's major industrial center are located in the central part of the country far from either coal-producing areas. This fact places coal a great geographical disadvantage in comparison with petroleum whose refining bases are concentrated on the coastal regions virtually next to major industrial centers.

A study(1) on the sulfuric acid extraction of alumina from some Pennsylvania ferruginous clays indicated that the published electrolytic method(2)(3) seems to be more efficient than the known chemical methods (4-9) for removing iron from the leach liquor. The main disadvantages of the chemical methods are the consumption of excessive amounts of reagents and/or the precipitation of prohibitive amounts of aluminum. In the electrolytic method, iron is deposited on the mercury cathode, while aluminum is not and remains in solution. This method, however, had been handicapped by the lack of an effective and economical way to purify the contaminated mercury cathode.(7)(l0). Described herein is a scheme for cleaning the mercury cathode, and for recycling the clean mercury back into the electrolytic cell. Armed with such an apparatus, the effects of applied potential, temperature, and operation time on the electrolytic separation of iron from aluminum sulfate solutions were determined. For the sake of comparing results, a term, removability, was coined to represent the percentage of iron amalgamated per unit height of electrolyte (cm.), per unit surface area of cathode (cm.2), per unit of operation time (second).

Autonomous mining systems have been deployed for improving mine performance. However, there is a fear of job losses. Adoption of autonomous systems is envisaged to be resisted by major stakeholders in Ghana due to high illiteracy and unemployment. This paper assesses the preparedness of Ghanaian mining stakeholders for the adoption of autonomous systems to Ghana’s surface mining industry. Closed and open-ended questionnaires were administered to mine stakeholders. Respondents generally expressed unwillingness to accept autonomous systems into Ghanaian mines due to fear of increased unemployment. We propose setting up a mining education fund (MEF) for training stakeholders in autonomous mining systems. INTRODUCTION Mining contributes enormously to the sustenance and growth of global and national economies through the provision of raw materials, employment, revenues and foreign exchange (Carvalho, 2017; ICMM, 2017; Cordes et al., 2016; Solomon et al., 2008; Walser, 2000). The International Council on Mining & Metals (ICMM, 2014) reported that globally, formal mining employs approximately 2.5 million people. Many resource-rich countries, especially the developing ones, have experienced strong socioeconomic growth propelled by the discovery and extraction of valuable minerals. McMahon and Moreira (2014) reported a positive linkage between mining and sustainable development. They revealed that averagely, resource-rich countries have improved Human Development Index (HDI) scores than countries without mineral resources. Mining remains a crucial industry in Ghana’s economic development (Bermúdez-Lugo, 2016; Amponsah-Tawiah and Dartey-Baah, 2011). Over the years, mining has contributed significantly to the gross domestic product (GDP) of Ghana. In 2013, mining accounted for 1.7% of Ghana’s GDP and about 19% of government revenues (Ghana Chamber of Mines, 2015). The Ghana Chamber of Mines also reported that mining contributed over 50% of foreign direct investment, 37% of export earnings and 1.1% of direct employment revenues. The US Department of Energy (DOE) estimates that 65% of coal, 92% of metals and 96% of industrial minerals are mined using surface mining methods (DOE, 2007). Generally, mining is a capital-intensive venture, with high operating cost, hence there is a constant demand for mining companies to seek efficient cost reduction and production maximization strategies. One strategy being pursued keenly is automation, which is noted to improve productivity, and worker safety at minimal cost. According to Parreira (2013), mining automation involves direct teleoperation whereby workers remotely control the mining process using computers from a control room.
