Past research showed that bituminous coal dust remains dry and dispersible in the presence of moisture. Rock dust must disperse with the coal dust to effectively inert a propagating coal dust explosion. Non-treated rock dust readily absorbs moisture, limiting its dispersibility, while anti-caking treated rock dusts can remain dry. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health contracted the Central Mining Institute in Poland to conduct large-scale testing in their Experimental Mine Barbara to determine if a treated rock dust can be as effective as non-treated rock dust in attenuating or quenching coal dust explosions under the same experimental conditions. INTRODUCTION One of the goals of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is to conduct research to reduce the risk of mine disasters and provide workplace solutions to reduce the risks associated with accumulations of combustible and explosible materials; the most common form of which is the generation of coal dust during the mining process and its subsequent distribution downwind. Dispersible rock dust is a primary defense for preventing coal dust explosion propagation in underground coal mines, and its properties are defined in 30 CFR 75.2. “Pulverized limestone, dolomite, gypsum, anhydrite, shale, adobe, or other inert material, preferably light colored, 100 percent of which will pass through a sieve having 20 meshes per linear inch and 70 percent or more of which will pass through a sieve having 200 meshes per linear inch; the particles of which when wetted and dried will not cohere to form a cake which will not be dispersed into separate particles by a light blast of air; and which does not contain more than 5 percent combustible matter or more than a total of 4 percent free and combined silica (SiO2), or, where the Secretary finds that such silica concentrations are not available, which does not contain more than 5 percent of free and combined silica.” An earlier NIOSH investigation of rock dust revealed two significant concerns with the supply of rock dust to U.S. coal mines: 1) insufficient particles <200 mesh (75 μm) and 2) all rock dusts when wetted and dried formed cakes and were not easily dispersed with a light blast of air (1). Past research by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and others showed that bituminous coal dust remains dry and dispersible in the presence of moisture (2). Rock dust must also be dispersible in concert with the coal dust to effectively inert a propagating coal dust explosion (3, 4, 5, 6). Non-treated rock dust, however, readily absorbs moisture, limiting its dispersibility, while a rock dust treated with long-chain fatty acids (such as stearic acid) can remain dry and dispersible. Stearin-treated rock dust has been used in British coal mines (7) and is commonly used in Polish coal mines.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of a diesel particulate filter (DPF) regeneration process on the concentrations and size distributions of aerosols in an underground mine. Two active regeneration strategies were examined for an electrically regenerated sintered metal fiber filtration system, and the effects were compared with those observed for a muffler and the same system operated in a passive configuration. The effects were assessed for three steady-state engine operating conditions. The number and mass concentrations and size distributions of aerosols in mine air were found to be strongly affected by the exhaust configuration, engine operating conditions and the regeneration process. When the system was operated in active configurations, the concentrations exhibited a transient and cyclic nature. At light load conditions, the distributions of aerosols in mine air were dominated by accumulation mode aerosols for all exhaust configurations and regeneration strategies. High concentrations of nucleation aerosols were observed when the DPF system was used and the engine was operated at high load conditions. A positive correlation between accumulation of particulate matter in the filter and the efficiency of the filter in removing accumulation mode aerosols was observed for all conditions. In the case of high engine load, reductions in accumulation mode aerosol concentrations were linked to a substantial increase in number concentrations of nucleation mode aerosol. Overall, the filtration system was found to be very effective in reducing total aerosol mass and elemental carbon concentrations for all engine operating conditions. However, the system was substantially more effective in passive than in active regeneration configurations.

Large language models (LLMs) have generated a lot of hype since ChatGPT was released in early 2023. In essence, they allow people to interact with computer systems through natural language and have the ability to generate highly complex text, images and videos (Patil and Gudivada, 2024). It is clear that this technology has significant potential, however most mining companies have not yet found practical applications for it within their operations. In this paper, we present a range of such applications along with the tactical considerations associated with developing and implementing them. We have identified use cases across a variety of operational and functional areas within the mining industry and evaluated them based on their potential business value and ease of implementation. Firstly, we provide an overview of how LLMs work and a review of how LLMs are being applied in other industries to provide best practice inspiration for mining. Next, we present a list of possible applications in mining and a critical assessment of each use case. This section also includes a technical deep dive into the different methodologies for developing the technologies as well as an analysis of barriers to adoption within mining organizations. Finally, we share a discussion of the potential path forward for LLMs in mining and the impact they could have on the industry. We analyze the potential differences between early adopters and laggards in the artificial intelligence (AI) space. This research draws on interviews and surveys with artificial intelligence experts as well as mining subject matter experts to connect cutting edge thought leadership with the specific problems faced by our industry.

Two years ago, about the only US mining ventures that could turn even marginal profits were precious metals. In 1986, the price of gold dramatically increased, as did earnings from precious metals, mostly gold mines. First quarter results for 1987 show that gold will again be the most profitable type of mining in the US. All this money being made in gold resulted in many new mines being opened and hundreds of old workings being re-evaluated. The Society of Mining Engineers has put together a technical program to aid in developing precious metals mines. Problems facing the small miner The small miner has found and started most of the productive mines in the world, says Alfred G. Hoyl, of Coal Fuels Corp., Rollinsville, CO. Hoyl will state his case for small mines development in the opening session of the program. He will make the point that government regulations must never restrict the small mine or miner. And the mining industry must be careful not to crowd out the independent miner. "To restrict small mining is to say to our young men and women entering the mineral industry `There is no place for you as an independent.&apos; Small is a relative term and we must never feel that starting small will restrict our possibilities of becoming big." In the same session, David J. Starbuck, Starbuck Minerals Management, Mayer, AZ will take a look at why smaller precious metals mines are profitable. Mining companies have changed their perspective on reworking previously mined properties. They are looking at abandoned properties in older mining districts. The attitude is that smaller operations in these districts can be profitable with the present economic climate, more advanced technology, and better management. Small, independent mining companies may not have the same resources to draw from as the majors. But there are affordable technologies available that fit into the independents&apos; budget. Betty Gibbs, of Gibbs Associates, Boulder, Co will explain how a personal computer can help a small operation to analyze data more effectively and respond quickly to changing conditions. Scenarios will be developed that will describe how PCs can be incorporated into all phases of an operation. Financial institutions are becoming more willing to consider venture capital for small precious metals mines, according to Stanley Dempsey, Denver Mining Finance Co., Denver, CO. This may be in the form of equity or debt, he says, but they want to receive assurances of the quality of the resource. And they will ask about the ore reserves. Next, the potential lender will want to know about the mining method and en¬vironmental regulations. Dempsey will discuss these requirements. Once a high grade gold mineralization is located and reserves proven, it must be evaluated to determine which recovery process is best suited for this deposit. Robert Martinez, Amselco Minerals, Ely, NV will evaluate processes for such a deposit located in Mexico. Heap leaching, vat leaching, and a carbon-in-pulp circuit are all viable options, he says. Discussion by E.J. Garrison A.C. Noble presents a clear and concise summary of the factors pertinent to a competent reserve evaluation of a mineral occurrence. However, I believe that he confuses the difference between a resource and a reserve. By definition, a reserve estimate includes all known economic, legal, mining, metallurgical and environmental factors impacting the recovery of the product(s) found in the deposit. A resource estimate, however, is an estimate of what is there - what is available for exploitation and should not include economic and other considerations. Only after defining the resource, its extent, location, physical and chemical properties, can an intelligent selection process begin of the extraction and processing technologies most appropriate to the circumstances encountered. The early and almost certainly inappropriate application of these often cookbook choices has probably lead many companies to walk away from good properties. (How many mines have been found in others rejects?) An example of the process is the early selection of metallurgical samples, after encouraging values are found in a few holes or surface samples, in an attempt to determine the economics of the prospect. Unfortunately, the sampler does not know how representative of the occurrence the sample is because he does not know what the deposit looks like. As a consequence, the property becomes saddled with a bad metallurgical sample that is often inappropriately used in evaluating the deposit which it does not represent. Reply by A.C. Noble E.J. Garrison asserts that I confuse the difference between a resource and an ore reserve. In fact, this paper was motivated by the observation that resources and reserves are almost universally confused throughout the industry. While Garrison is concerned that too-early consideration of engineering, metallurgical and economic factors will result in dropping properties too soon, some issues that must be considered include: •The purpose of exploration is to discover ore reserves, not to discover resources. •Ore reserves are always smaller than resources. • Decisions on exploration expenditures must be made based on the expectation of the quantity of ore reserves that will ultimately be defined. Noble&apos;s Fig. 2 can be used to give guidance as to when it is appropriate to begin reserve calculations. When exploration enters the "flat" portion of the curve, representative samples can be selected for metallurgical studies and appropriate mining methods chosen. It is at this stage that we know enough about the deposit to make intelligent choices of representative samples and recognize constraints on mining caused by the deposits shape, environment and physical properties. Once the appropriate technologies have been chosen, then their cost can be estimated with reasonable accuracy. Early entry of economic and process factors gives the false appearance of reserve status to the resource estimation. It would be more informative and less subject to abuse and misunderstanding if resource calculations were made at a number of cutoff grades. The cutoff grades should be chosen to cover the range of grades found in practice in existing operations of similar type. This would emphasize the open nature of resource estimates and encourage creative evaluation of mining and process technologies. It does not preclude the use of economic, environmental and recovery technology factors in deciding the advisability of continuing exploration expenditures, but would highlight their speculative nature. It is thus hoped that decisions on the future of the deposit would not be made on the presumed suitability of a given technology but on the actually known reality. I agree that resource estimates should be reported as a range of cutoff grades. Since reporting at a cutoff implies application of underlying economics (even by analogy to similar properties), however, it should be clearly stated that resources do not consider economic, mining or cost factors, and that ore reserves will be substantially less. The dilemma of the explorationist is that until the continuity and limits of ore-grade mineralization have been established, it is difficult to make quantitative estimates of either resources or ore reserves. Further industry discussion is needed regarding standards for disclosing early exploration information in such a way as to fairly represent the potential of an exploration property.

"Diesel particulate matter (DPM) has been regulated by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration since 2002 in underground metal and nonmetal mines. To demonstrate regulatory compliance, DPM samples must be collected and later analyzed by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) 5040 standard method, but the FLIR Airtec DPM monitor can serve as a complementary engineering tool. The monitor is a handheld instrument that offers near-real-time measurements of elemental carbon (EC), which is a primary constituent of DPM. As part of an ongoing field study, the monitor was used to survey EC in an underground stone mine. This effort was aimed at determining spatial and temporal DPM variations in several key locations. The results of prolonged area monitoring—that is, lasting several hours — revealed that DPM concentrations were diluted substantially as air moved away from the primary production zone, but that concentrations could vary quite a bit in a single location from day to day and between seasons. DPM concentrations were generally lower in winter than in summer, which is consistent with increased natural ventilation airflows during winter. Using a modified sampling cassette, an attempt was also made to sensitize the Airtec monitor to allow for “spot-checking” of EC concentrations — that is, measurements made in several minutes. Preliminary field data showed that the sensitive cassette performed well in terms of providing accurate data that could be useful for rapid assessment of DPM. IntroductionDiesel particulate matter (DPM) is the solid fraction of the exhaust emissions from a diesel engine. It largely consists of elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC) (Birch, 2003). The World Health Organization International Agency for Research on Cancer classified diesel exhaust, including DPM, as a carcinogen (World Health Organization, 2012). It is believed to cause and/or exacerbate respiratory illness upon inhalation, deposition and retention in lung tissue. Because DPM exists in both the micro- and nanoparticulate ranges, it can bypass typical autoimmune defense mechanisms that keep larger particles out of the respiratory system (Ristovski et al., 2012)."

"The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health completed a 15-month study at an underground limestone mine crusher booth that evaluated three research parameters: (1) the effectiveness of a filtration and pressurization system for improving the air quality inside the operator booth, (2) the relative effectiveness of ? > 99 and ? > 95 experimental prototype filters in the system, and (3) the performance of three different cab pressure monitoring devices. The protection factor was quantified monthly using particle counters in the respirable dust range of 0.3 to 1 µm particle size, and gravimetric dust samples were gathered at the beginning and end of the overall study. Under static (closed-door) conditions, the filtration unit offered a gravimetric calculated protection factor between 10 and 31, depending on the filter type and loading condition. The monthly particle counting analysis shows that the ? > 95 filter offers a protection factor nearly five times that of the ? > 99 filter, where n = 15 samples. The booth pressure monitors were tested and proved to be a valid indicator of system performance over time. IntroductionDesigned and installed correctly, enclosed cabs, operator booths and control rooms offer mine workers protection from noise and physical hazards, such as flying rock and debris, as well as a more comfortable environment in regards to temperature and humidity (Organiscak et al., 2016). While it is easy to quantify the operation of a cab’s air-conditioning unit by measuring the temperature, or observe whether the cab offers protection from flying debris, it is somewhat more difficult to quantify its performance in reducing respirable dust hazards.The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been conducting applied research to improve the air quality inside the enclosed cabs of mobile equipment, resulting in the mathematical modeling of enclosed cab filtration systems (Organiscak and Cecala, 2008). The same principles that govern the performance of filtration systems on mobile equipment are applicable to stationary enclosures such as operator booths and control rooms (Noll, Cecala and Hummer, 2015). While stationary enclosures are similar to mobile cabs, the work area can be significantly larger. Workers in booths and control rooms also tend to stay within the enclosure for a greater percentage of the day as opposed to workers on mobile equipment who enter and exit frequently."

"Mine monitoring through various sensors is a vital component of successful miner safety and health programs. Data from environmental, geotechnical, infrastructure and other types of sensors are increasingly used to discover and mitigate health and safety concerns in underground mines. In many smaller underground mines, as well as in the new development headings of larger underground mines, leaky feeder communication systems may be the only available means to transport crucial monitoring data. In addition, data transport is increasingly being delivered using Internet Protocol (IP), while older forms of serial communication are being retired. This paper presents the selection, configuration and testing methodologies employed by researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to integrate commercially available land mobile data radios into an existing leaky feeder communication system to provide IP data transport.IntroductionTo enhance the health and safety of their mining workforce, mine owners and operators are increasingly installing environmental monitoring and control systems in underground mines. Real-time, mine-wide monitoring is becoming a reality with the implementation of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) into the underground mining industry (Zhou et al., 2017). However, not all underground mines, especially smaller mines and new development headings in larger mines, have the information technology infrastructure in place to handle the data transport requirements for the newer Internet Protocol (IP)-based technologies that are part of IIoT.This was the case with a mine in the Western United States. It lacked the infrastructure to perform critical monitoring in remote headings. Therefore, the mine partnered with the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) to develop and evaluate a cost-effective solution for the real-time monitoring of geotechnical conditions in relatively remote sections of the mine. This paper describes SMRD’s solution to leverage the mine’s existing leaky feeder communications system to achieve IP data transport using commercially available land mobile data radios (NIOSH, 2013; Forooshani et al., 2013; Novak, Snyder and Kohler, 2010; Yarkan et al., 2009). The solution, fully evaluated in laboratory and mine environments, requires no modifications to the existing system, is economical, simple to implement, and reliable. It also allows for transition to higher-bandwidth IT networks, such as fiber optic or WiFi, should they become available."

The mining industry faces increasing geopolitical risk in the coming decades. Constraints such as resource nationalism, corruption and social license could grow to outweigh fundamental limitations like geology or supply and demand (Ernst & Young, 2013; Verrastro et al. 2010). Lurking beneath these more immediate and palpable concerns, however, may be more significant risks entrenched in geography and history. Deep-rooted cultural and strategic forces that emerge slowly ? or erupt suddenly and unexpectedly ? can generate momentous and far-reaching political, social and economic changes. While multinational enterprises routinely assess for political risk, the nature of minerals extraction means long-term and systemic geopolitical conditions are especially important for mining companies to identify and understand. Mine development is a decades-long process that binds companies to the land and makes changing course to avert emerging threats a difficult and costly option. Consequently, geopolitical assessment is a pertinent and valuable tool that mining companies can use to more comprehensively evaluate strategic threats and opportunities. Geopolitics is the study of society, politics and strategy through the lens of geography (Gray, 1996). Its emphasis on relatively permanent physical features of the earth makes geopolitics a uniquely valuable tool for assessing political risk. Topography, climate and natural resources have shaped, constrained and motivated peoples and governments throughout history. These influences transcend regimes, policies and borders ? and even states themselves ? which, by contrast, change often and dramatically. Framing politics against mountains, deserts and rivers supports identification of historical patterns and forecasts of emerging trends. In other words, the physical map provides an objective and consistent model for studying a subjective and dynamic subject such as politics (Sloan and Gray, 1999). Consequently, geopolitical assessment can highlight threats and opportunities that go unaddressed by other risk methodologies that emphasize current conditions (Glancy, 2012). Taken together, the permanence of geography, hindsight afforded by centuries of political history, and interconnectedness of world events makes geopolitical assessment a valuable approach for conceptualizing strategic risk.

Updating the openpit vehicle transportation network has the problem of being time consuming and low precision. To address this problem, a high-precision road network model construction method for unmanned vehicles in openpit mines is proposed. This method can be divided into two steps. In the first step, an improved deep learning image processing model named DeepLabv3+C (DeepLabv3+Concat) is presented, and the road information extracted by the DeepLabv3+C network is used to construct a three-dimensional model of the openpit mine road network. In the second step, aiming at the time-consuming problem of unmanned vehicles meeting in openpit mines, a vehicle meeting strategy is proposed. This strategy is used to guide the navigation of unmanned vehicles in openpit mines. At the end of the study, vehicle running simulation was carried out on the road network model using Unity, a 3D visualization simulation software. The high-precision unmanned road network model of openpit mines studied in this work can further promote the construction and development of smart mines by acting as a high-precision map for unmanned vehicles.

"The term “aggregate” has a number of definitions depending primarily on the use of the material. Aggregate in some context is sand, gravel, crushed stone, slag or other material of mineral composition used in bituminous and portland cement concrete, mortar, plaster, railroad ballast, filter beds and a variety of other uses where aggregates can be utilized.Of the natural aggregates, crushed stone is widely used for most construction purposes. Crushed stone can be mined from a variety of rock types such as limestone, dolomite (dolostone), granites, and granitic type rocks, basalt, gabbro (trap rock), sandstones, schist, marble, gneiss, quartzite, rhyolite, as well as other rock types. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) breaks down the rocks by type sold as follows: limestone, dolomite, marble, calcareous marl, shell, granite, trap rock (basalt, diorite) sandstone/quartzite, slate, volcanic cinder and scoria and miscellaneous stone.In 2015, the USGS estimates that 1.32 Gt (1.45 billion st) of crushed stone were produced in the United States. The volume of crushed stone produced, and the numerous mines that produce it make the crushed stone industry the largest mining industry in the United States. The five leading states for production of crushed stone in 2015 were Texas, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Florida and Ohio. The size of the first two states certainly helps in output because of the large market area. The remaining states benefit from being able to barge along rivers to outside markets in adjoining states. Georgia producers rail large amounts of granitic aggregate to Florida and adjacent states devoid of crushed stone aggregate, especially skid resistant aggregate (aggregate used on the top course of asphalt roads)."

"Atmospheric monitoring systems (AMS) have been widely used in underground coal mines in the United States for the detection of fire in the belt entry and the monitoring of other ventilation-related parameters such as airflow velocity and methane concentration in specific mine locations. In addition to an AMS being able to detect a mine fire, the AMS data have the potential to provide fire characteristic information such as fire growth — in terms of heat release rate — and exact fire location. Such information is critical in making decisions regarding firefighting strategies, underground personnel evacuation and optimal escape routes. In this study, a methodology was developed to calculate the fire heat release rate using AMS sensor data for carbon monoxide concentration, carbon dioxide concentration and airflow velocity based on the theory of heat and species transfer in ventilation airflow. Full-scale mine fire experiments were then conducted in the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division’s Safety Research Coal Mine using an AMS with different fire sources. Sensor data collected from the experiments were used to calculate the heat release rates of the fires using this methodology. The calculated heat release rate was compared with the value determined from the mass loss rate of the combustible material using a digital load cell. The experimental results show that the heat release rate of a mine fire can be calculated using AMS sensor data with reasonable accuracy.IntroductionFires at different stages generate different gases and smoke toxicity hazards. When fires occur in underground mines, a significant amount of toxic gases and smoke enter the mine ventilation system and are carried throughout the mine ventilation network, increasing the hazard potential for personnel even if far away from the actual fire. Although fires that develop to the point of rapid flame spread pose imminent hazards, fires in their smoldering, pre-flaming stages can also contaminate the mine atmosphere with debilitating levels of smoke and toxic gases.The most important parameter for evaluating the fire hazard in mines is the heat release rate (HRR), which is directly related to the rate at which heat, smoke and toxic gases are produced and transported by the ventilation system and which provides an indication of the time available for escape or firefighting (Babrauskas and Peacock, 1992). The HRR is also an important input parameter to mine fire simulation models."

Having seen significant improvements to accident rates in the last 40 years, companies in the Swedish mining industry now show a greater focus on the development of safety cultures throughout their organisations and workplaces. However, there is a lack of research examining the different safety initiatives and strategies practiced in the industry today. This study explores the potential influence and consequences such initiatives may have on the development of safety cultures in the Swedish mining industry. Twelve interviews with experts on safety initiatives from four different Swedish mining organisations were conducted and analysed in a process based on qualitative thematic analysis to identify notable connections to safety culture development. The results of these interviews highlight proclivities in the implementation and use of safety initiatives such as subjects of focus, methods and desired effects. This enables the interpretation of the conceptualisation and methods for the development of safety culture in these organisations based on their approaches to safety development. We believe the results of this study can serve as support for discussions on safety culture development in the Swedish mining industry, and be of interest for international mining industries, in addition to approaches to research in this field. However, we also believe it is important to emphasise the opportunities to approach safety culture in mining from different perspectives than those common today.

It is widely accepted that particles stabilize flotation froths and that stable froths result in improved flotation performance. Predicting the effect of particle addition on froth stability is, however, challenging. Furthermore, there is currently no technique that allows the prediction of the effect of different flotation reagents on froth stability, without carrying out froth stability experiments.

"The Mount Todd gold mine is located approximately 50 km (31 miles) north of the town of Katherine in the Northern Territory (NT) of Australia just off the Stewart Highway, and was operated in the 1990s until 2000 (Fig. 1). After cessation of mining operations, meteoric precipitation and acid rock drainage (ARD) associated with surface water runoff continued to report to the retention ponds across the mine site. In 2000, the mine site entered receivership and the NT government became responsible for the care and maintenance program. In 2006, Vista Gold Corp. (as Vista Gold Australia) acquired the rights to resume exploration on the mine site without the financial responsibility of the environmental liability. In January 2007, Vista Gold assumed the care and maintenance activities on behalf of the NT government, with the environmental liability remaining with the NT government, with the goal of reinitiating mining operations. A critical path component of the planned upgrades to the existing mine/milling facilities and infrastructure was the development of a cost effective treatment and dewatering program for the approximately 11 GL (2,900 million gal) of ARD stored in the Batman Pit (RP3), which has a maximum capacity of approximately 12 GL (3,200 million gal). The Batman Pit must be dewatered in order for Vista Gold to restart mining activities. The Batman Pit Lake had reached a maximum water depth of 104 m (341 ft) when Vista Gold initiated water level monitoring. It is important to note that the ARD water in the Batman Pit has been pumped into it from 2000 to 2012 under an NT government-approved environmental control program.The Batman Pit has virtually no connection to the local ground water regime due to the intensive silicification that accompanied the mineralizing event. In October 2012, just prior to treatment, the pit lake profile was characterized by uniform acidic pH (approximately pH 3.2) and oxic conditions (dissolved oxygen greater than 7 mg/L with depth (Fig. 2). The temperature decreased by approximately 4 °C (39 °F) between the lake surface and approximately 20 m (66 ft) deep, and remained near constant with increasing depth. This temperature difference is believed to be associated with an existing shallow mine bench at approximately 20 m (66 ft) deep around the perimeter of the pit. Similarly, electrical conductivity, an estimate of total dissolved solids, decreased by about 85 microSiemens per centimeter (µS/cm) from 2,800 to 2,715 µS/cm between 10 and 20 m (33 and 66 ft)."

"Air inversion is a meteorological phenomenon generally occurs during winter times. Release of pollutants below the inversion height in an open-pit mine during periods of weak winds and consequently weak vertical mixing may result in very high concentrations of primary and secondary pollutants, causing serious consequences for health and safety of miners. Mine operations cease if the concentration of NOx or CO exceeds the threshold limit value (TLV) of the pollutants. Artificial ventilation is required to dilute the pollutants to an extent that mine workers can safely resume work. Studies of the turbulence parameters suggest that effective ventilation of the pit and removal of pollutants can be accomplished if a large enough mixing length in the open pit can be created. Turbulent mixing by eddies of different length scales under an inversion layer is product of wind shear, thermal gradient and buoyancy. The main result of turbulence is mixing of the atmospheric profile and transport of momentum. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) Simulation results of a novel mitigation approach using cloud cover will be presented in this paper. INTRODUCTION In extreme climatic conditions, deep open-pit mines tend to trap pollutants at the pit bottom due to air inversions. Keeping open pits adequately ventilated is a considerable challenge for the mining community. Mine operators in cold regions are very familiar with this problem, the severity of which can be judged from Figures 1 and 2. The top portion of the figures show clear sky and snow covered benches. The brown haze, containing various contaminants accumulated over time in the pit under the air inversion, can be seen in the bottom portion of the figures. Several Arctic or subarctic mines have reported air inversions. Even Rio Tinto’s Bingham Canyon pit in Utah has reported local air inversions from time to time [1].Mitigation of pollutants in deep open-pit mines in the Arctic is a challenging task. Release of pollutants below the inversion height in an open-pit mine during periods of weak winds and consequently weak vertical mixing may result in very high concentrations of primary and secondary pollutants, causing serious consequences for human health. Mine operations cease if the concentration of any one of the pollutants (NOx or CO) exceeds the TLV. Sustained cessation of a mine operation has serious economic consequences. For continued mining operation, the levels of pollutants must be below the TLVs. If no significant synoptic meteorological situation changes during an inversion, a warm air mass sits over the cold air mass within the open pit. Artificial ventilation is required to dilute the pollutants to an extent that mine workers can safely resume work. Some of the early approaches in artificially ventilating open pits were attempted in the USSR. Most of the studies by Soviet researchers suggested the use of turbojets and turbo-propeller engines, airscrews, axial pit fans, and meteotrons [2, 3]. However, the majority of these studies were only theoretical in nature, with no evidence of an approach that really worked in practice."

"We hear all the time about the value of hard work and perseverance, and the part they play in the professional life of successful people. What we do not hear so much about are the many professionals who work hard and persevere, yet never seem to quite reach the level of success they aim for. Some current authors are beginning to give more attention to the part luck/black swans/outliers play in success. This is not a new phenomenon, Machiavelli had a lot to say about it back in the Renaissance. So how can knowledge of this dynamic help in a modern organization? INTRODUCTION Work hard and you will succeed. Go to the right school, major in the right degree, study hard, and get a good job. Look at the lives of successful people, and do what they do. Be all that you can be. You can be anything you want to be. Really? Those who are successful always get attention, people want to know what they did to reach such a high position. Invariably, at least part of their narrative will include hard work, wise insight, taking advantage of opportunities, etc. If they are of a more generous nature, they might also allow that building the right friendships and collaborations also played a role. All of this may be true; what we do not often hear are the stories of those who did all of these very same things, but did not find success. An example from pop culture: The Voice. I have watched this show occasionally the past couple of years. One of the things I like about the show is that the initial screening of contestants is based solely on their singing voice (hence the name of the show), and not on their appearance. At the time of this writing (early November), the judges have just finished elimination rounds for their final teams to go on to the live shows. Here is my point—in almost every case the judges agonized over choosing who would go forward and who would be eliminated. And the reason is because all of them are really talented singers. It is impressive how gifted they are. At the end of each season, only one is declared a winner, out of that gifted pool of singers. When you hear their stories, they are all talented, hard-working individuals sacrificing for their art. And as far as I know, none of them has ever become a star. Hard work, dedication, sacrifice, talent—sometimes it is enough, sometimes not. I will be looking at the part uncertainty/luck/black swans play in our lives, but I want to make it clear at the beginning that I am not saying everything that happens to us is out of our hands or beyond our control. Taleb makes this same point (2007, p. 52): “This problem is chronic: if you tell people that the key to success is not always skills, they think that you are telling them that it is never skills, always luck.”"

Because of its pronounced tendency to undergo visco-plastic flow, coal ground in the energy- efficient high-pressure roll mill invariably comes out as a briquetted product which must be disintegrated in a conventional type of grinding device such as the ball mill. The aggregates comprise comminuted coal particles that are apparently extensively cracked and weakened during passage of the coal through the high-pressure rolls. Their deaggregation in a ball mill in the second stage is accompanied by further grinding of the coal with a relatively small expenditure of energy. Thus in spite of energy dissipation in briquetting in the roll mill and in disintegrating the briquettes in the ball mill, significant energy savings are possible in the fine grinding of coal in a two-stage serial grinding mode, as compared to ball mill grinding alone. It has been determined that for the best results the energy invested in the two grinding stages must be apportioned in an optimal manner, the energy consumption in the ball milling step is comparable to, even in excess of, the energy spent in the high- pressure roll mill; and 20 to 50 percent energy savings might be possible in grinding coal to minus 200-mesh size by this two-step process, as compared to conventional milling.

"Mine monitoring through various sensors is a vital component of successful miner safety and health programs. Data from environmental, geotechnical, infrastructure, and other types of sensors are increasingly being used to discover and mitigate health and safety concerns in underground mines. In many smaller underground mines, as well as in new development headings of larger underground mines, leaky feeder communication systems may be the only available means to transport crucial monitoring data. In addition, data transport is increasingly being delivered using Internet Protocol (IP) while older forms of serial communication are being retired. This paper presents the selection, configuration, and testing methodologies that were employed by researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to integrate commercially available land mobile data radios into an existing leaky feeder communication system to provide Internet Protocol data transport. INTRODUCTION To enhance the health and safety of their mining workforce, mine owners and operators are increasingly installing environmental monitoring and control systems in underground mines. Real-time, mine-wide monitoring is becoming a reality with the implementation of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) into the underground mining industry [1]. However, not all underground mines, especially smaller mines and new development headings in larger mines, have the information technology (IT) infrastructure in place to handle the data transport requirements for the newer IP-based technologies that are part of IIoT. This was the case with a mine in the Western United States; it lacked the infrastructure to perform critical monitoring in remote headings. The mine partnered with the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH’s) Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) to develop and evaluate a cost-effective solution for real-time monitoring of geotechnical conditions in relatively remote sections of the mine. This paper describes SMRD’s solution to leverage the mine’s existing leaky feeder system to achieve IP data transport using commercially available land mobile data radios. DATA RADIO SELECTION The primary selection criteria for the data radios were network data format, modulation type, and radio channel spacing. The network data format decided upon was Internet Protocol. This format allowed for straightforward integration between the IP-enabled data acquisition system located in a remote heading and the network switch located in the control room. It also eliminated the added complexity of additional network hardware such as Ethernet to Serial converters. IP additionally provided a direct path to integration into higher bandwidth networks, such as fiber optic, should they become available."

The Red River is located within the Sangre De Cristo Mountain Range in northern New Mexico. An approximate 12-mile segment of the river from the town of Red River to the village of Questa (Questa) includes several hydrothermal alteration zones. Alteration ?scars? formed as a result of rapid chemical weathering and physical erosion of pyrite-rich hydrothermally altered rocks. Storm water runoff from the scar drainages contributes metal-laden, acidic water to the river and creates a visible plume of discolored water in the river. Acidic runoff reduces the river pH from 7 to the mid 3s for at least 2 hours during large storms and the low pH water continues downstream. Runoff from scar drainages increases some metal concentrations in the river from below chronic ecological criteria to as much as two orders of magnitude greater than acute ecological criteria, and results in acutely toxic conditions for macro-invertebrates. A general improvement in the river?s water quality occurs downstream due to dilution from tributary inflow from non-mineralized watersheds, the natural buffering capacity of the river, and storm water controls at the Chevron Mining Inc. Questa mine.
