The disposal of brines produced with crude petroleum and natural gas has been a long-continuing problem to oil and gas operators as well as to farmers and stock-raisers in the vicinity of producing fields. An impartial appraisal of conditions pertaining to the problem of brine disposal leads to the conclusion that study of the technical consideration, with proper weight given to the economic and social factors, is the most desirable approach to this problem. Brine disposal is a problem of such magnitude in certain areas in the State of Kansas that in August 1934 a cooperative agreement was made between the Kansas State Board of Health and the U. S. Bureau of Mines for a cooperative technical study of methods of brine disposal.

One of the most significant problems experienced in land reclamation work has been the tendency of earthmovers to over-compact the subsoils and topsoils. The need for extensive subsoil drainage, because of over-compaction, becomes a very expensive exercise and can be attributed to poor planning. The problem has been addressed both at the Waihi and Huntly open-cast mines through the use of low ground pressure machines in the placement of subsoils and contouring. The use of subsoilers working to contour to aerate the soils is essential to integrate both the sub and topsoils so that significant root growth and drainage is established. Waihi's rainfall (approximately 200 mm annually) and light soils create difficulties in preparing for the final seed bed. A noticeable factor in preparation of the growing medium was the reaction of the lime particularly in the subsoils (damp), from a lumpy, quite heavy texture to almost a seed-bed texture within a period of approximately 72 hours. Also the high incidence of stone and debris which was not apparent in the placement of subsoils meant the job became very labour intensive. This will be overcome with the importation of a machine from the USA. All of the rubber tyred tractors used on these projects are four wheel drive in the 6S-aOhp range which for weight distribution and the safety factors allows for good landscaping techniques. Good engineering practices should ensure that slopes of no more than 3:1 be designed, keeping in mind that the long term planning must allow for maintenance and stock management of restored land.  In the preparation of the final growing medium the equipment used included: Caterpillar 05 LPG and blade; three-four wheel drive rubber tyre tractors; Super flow subsoiler; hydraulic twin spinner manure spreader; discs û two types; harrows; MF Seeder; Cambridge Roller and Duncan Rotatiller.

Reconciliation has become very topical over the last ten years but how do we distinguish what is good practice, and even more importantly, show how it adds value? Reconciliation at Anglo American has received support from the very top of the company and this has enabled success in the design and implementation of a range of processes, reporting activities and actions. Focus has been on full Mine Value Chain Reconciliation (MVCR) from Resource to Product and on proactive cross-functional engagement. A standardised set of reconciliation definitions and relationships are used at all mines across the company to diagnose planning and performance issues. Results are formally presented in an efficient dashboard format, accompanied by a concise narrative to communicate what has been learned and what is being done to correct, improve or change practices. Importantly, effort has also been made to sustain MVCR by embedding good practice and quantifying the benefit of reconciliation explicitly via linking results to value.This paper sets out the lessons learned from the past two-years’ journey, highlighting areas where good practice has been defined and achieved. A ranking for quantifying reconciliation confidence over time is presented as a means of putting results into context and continuously improving the reconciliation process. Finally, a solution to define the value that can be derived from reconciliation is described, detailing how cross-functional personnel meet monthly to review results and implement actions that are tracked in terms of value creation.CITATION:Morley, C and Arvidson, H, 2017. The feasibility of redesigning and adapting the all- secondary-explosive, low-voltage, electric safe detonator for use as a delay detonator has been demonstrated. Experimental results have shown that operational characteristics can be adjusted to allow direct competition of safe delay detonators with commercial delay blasting caps. Five different experimental delay period models have been developed and tested. Test results are given and results are evaluated. Subsequent simplified and improved designs for practical and economical mass production are described. Design concepts to meet Bureau of Mines voltage withstand, incendivity, and spark sensitivity requirements are included. Recommendations are made for experimental procedures to ready the safe delay detonator for mass production and extensive use in mining and other industries.

The development of an onboard contaminant diagnostic monitor to continuously measure contaminant level in a mining machine was advanced to a prototype stage in this contract. Several concepts were investigated and it was found that a static spool type sensor was the most reliable and accurate. Laboratory and field tests showed that an instrument based on this concept is capable of measuring contaminant levels and/or size distribution, depending on the configuration of the sensor. Moreover, this instrument can function on emulsions or homogeneous fluids. Current laboratory equipment can operate on homogeneous fluids only.

The field data gathered as part of the measurements described in Volumes I and II were re-analyzed in the low frequency regime (.1 Hz to 1 Hz) where motion sickness normally occurs. These data were compared co the international standard ?ISO 2631 Addendum 2: Evaluation of exposure to whole body z-axis vertical vibration in the frequency range 0.1 to 1.0 Hz." For both underground mining machines and surface mining machines the results showed that one would not expect motion sickness to .be a severe problem. New field data were gathered on the vibration reduction performance of various seat designs found on surface coal mining machines. The vibration during normal operation was measured on the seat using the standard seat pad accelerometer package described in the previous two volumes and simultaneously on the floor of the machine at the base of the seat. Preliminary indications are that the so-called high performance seats used for operator vibration reduction do not offer significant improvement over conventional seats.

Federal regulations require that methane liberated at the face be diluted and removed to maintain methane gas concentrations below 1 pct (CFR) in working places and intake air courses. The delivery and distribution of intake air at the face is critical for effective face ventilation. Improved techniques for monitoring the movement of intake air to the face are needed. A test system was developed and a computer program written for using a three-axis ultrasonic anemometer to measure airflow in a simulated mine entry. Results of tests conducted in the entry showed that the anemometer is a valuable tool for measuring mine airflow conditions near the face.

Subduction zone magmatism is a direct response to tectonic and chemical processes operating at convergent margins. Changes in the tectonic configuration of plate boundaries in SE Asia during the Cenozoic had consequences for the nature and volume of magma produced. Retreat or advance of the trench hinge has probably been an important process in controlling the presence or absence of magmatism in SE Asian subduction zones. This process also provides a means of replenishing the mantle wedge and counteracting the effects of melt extraction in depleting the wedge. Changes in the nature of recycled material and lithologies of the over-riding plate also have the potential to influence the lavas that are erupted in arcs. Several locations in SE Asia have experienced magmatism bearing the geochemical signature of subduction but are remote from coeval subduction zones. Such magmatism requires an earlier period of mantle enrichment by subduction but may result from localised extension. The distribution of such magmatism may provide information of tectonic value. Some adakitic magmatism occurred in tectonic settings where there is no evidence for subduction of young oceanic crust at the time of magma genesis. Slab melting in such settings is not possible and alternative mechanisms are required to explain the occurrence of, at least some, adakitic lavas.

Pressure relief is an important step in preventing and controlling rock burst disasters. Hydraulic slotting has emerged as a strategy for pressure relief and energy release in roadway surrounding rock. There is no qualitative description for the response relationship between hydraulic slotting parameters and the degree of pressure and energy release in a roadway, which is a scientific problem. In this paper, theoretical analysis, numerical simulation, and on-site industrial practice were comprehensively used. First, a structural model for the pressure relief and energy release of coal by hydraulic slotting in a deep roadway was established, and the pressure relief and energy release principle by hydraulic slotting was revealed. The principles and methods for determining hydraulic slotting parameters in the roadway were proposed. Three evaluation indices for the pressure relief and energy release effect of coal after hydraulic slotting were proposed, namely, the stress ratio of coal, elastic energy density ratio of coal, and displacement rate of the roadway rib. According to the evaluation indices, the degree of pressure relief and energy release was divided into three levels: reverse pressurization, full pressure relief, and transitional pressure relief. Then, a FLAC3D numerical model was constructed, the levels of pressure relief and energy release under different hydraulic slotting parameters were analyzed, and the optimal slotting parameters were determined. Finally, on-site industrial practices were carried out in Panel 7312 of the Xinhe Coal Mine. An effect test showed that the effect of pressure relief and energy release was remarkable after hydraulic slotting was adopted on the roadway surrounding rock, which can effectively reduce the risk of rock bursts. These research results can further improve hydraulic slotting technology systems and provide a theoretical basis and technical reference for the stability control of deep roadway surrounding rock.

An OCS Expert control system was implemented by Svedala Cisa at the Minera Maricunga Refugio Crush-Leach Operation near Copiapo, Chile. The purpose of the Expert system was to maximize production through the primary and secondary crushing circuits and help balance crusher usage between each stage to maximize total plant production. Interesting aspects of the control strategies are discussed. Benefits of the control were verified through a randomized On/Off test program. Tonnage increases ranged from 5% to approximately 20% at good confidence intervals. Benefits analysis results are discussed. The crushing plant at Refugio is very remote and is located at approximately 15,500 ft. This poses many challenges. The effect of altitude and remote location on plant operation are discussed.

An investigation was undertaken to ascertain the suitability of four selected low grade, South African coals for gasification in a bubbling fluidized bed for production of synthesis gas and for the development of integrated gasification combined cycles (IGCC). This study consisted of the characterization of the coals, laboratory evaluation of intrinsic reactivity, and experimentation with a pilot-plant fluidized bed gasifier. Results of the characterization experiments show that the selected coals are high in ash, rich in inertinites, very dense (low porosity), with low caking indices and high ash fusion temperatures. Reactivity measurements with a thermogravimetric analyser (TGA), under reaction rate controlling conditions with carbon dioxide, showed that the reactivity of the coal chars decreases with increase in rank of the coal, as expressed by the vitrinite random reflectance and carbon content of the parent coals. The fixed carbon conversion achieved in the fluidized bed gasifier also correlates well with the rank parameter of the coal, with higher conversions being obtained with the lower rank coals. Thermal shattering and attrition of the coal particles produce significant amounts of fines, which correlate with the grindability indices, and no agglomeration (non-caking) was observed. It is concluded that fluidized bed gasifiers are able to utilize typical low grade, high ash South African coals for synthesis gas production and for inclusion in integrated gasification combined cycles for power generation.

Estimation of the dynamic stress field in terms of its amplitude and decay around a blast hole is a key input parameter in all numerical modeling and blast prediction exercises. However, there is very limited information available in literature on these critical parameters, which would be considered essential in any blast modeling exercise. A laboratory-scale experimental study has been carried out in two different rock types to study at very close range the stress wave decay from a blast hole at distances ranging from 3 to 10 borehole radii. The single–hole blasting experiments employed a centrally located detonating cord (5.3 g/m) in 6 mm(1/4 inch) and 10 mm (3/8 inch) boreholes. The coupling medium employed was air and water, in addition to using a thin-walled copper tube in intimate contact with borehole wall to prevent of penetration of explosion gases into the emerging cracks. The paper describes the nature (amplitude and decay) of the transmitted shock pressure and their evolution in the two rock types for these various experimental conditions, which are present to varying degrees in all blasting operations.

Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health partnered with the water well industry to develop engi­neering control technologies and training products to address noise exposure at the job site. Noise­induced hearing loss continues to be a problem in the well drilling industry. Research con­ducted by NIOSH found that air rotary drill rigs produce sound levels more than 90 dB(A) over the course of an eight­hour workday. Sounds levels above 90 dB(A), identified during hammer drilling and the hammering of casing, exposes workers to levels that can damage hearing. A typical air rotary drill rig provides no barrier, for noise and dust pro­tection, between the drill’s control panel and the drill stem. The development of a partial cab is the clearest example of NIOSH’s research partnership with the water well industry. NIOSH researchers determined that an engineering noise control to protect the oper­ator at the rig’s control panel would be effective, based on typical work site conditions. Many surface rigs do not have full cabs as a result of the original equipment manufacturer design or the high cost of aftermarket products. Developed as a partial cab, the NIOSH engineer­ing noise control design addressed stakeholders’ needs associated with cost, transport, and worker usage (Figure 1). Field tests found the partial cab effective in reducing sound levels at the rig’s control panel, a typical location for a drill rig operator. Sound levels at the control panel were reduced from 104 to 96 dB(A) (Figure 2). Coupled with continued use of personal protective equipment, such as hear­ing protection devices, the partial cab can help to reduce noise exposure. NIOSH researchers created a CD with informa­tion about noise exposure and the partial cab. Most important to well drilling companies is information on how to construct and attach the partial cab to drill rigs. The CD can be viewed on a standard computer and includes a video of the partial cab in use on a work site. Computer­aided design drawings are included on the CD and provide detail of the cab design as well as information on construction mate­rials and design details. Additionally, the CD provides background infor­mation on noise­induced hearing loss and hearing protection devices to increase knowledge about this occupational health concern. This information can be viewed by all company employees to help promote the partial cab’s importance to workers using the cab. More information on the partial cab noise control technology can be downloaded from www.cdc.gov/ niosh/mining NIOSH researchers also examined the health and safety training needs of workers in the ground water industry. It was quickly realized that most workers learn health and safety on the job and do not attend any sort of formal training. In addition, there is not a lot of time for daily “tailgate talks” or “shop talks” on health and safety issues. As a small business industry, the owner is often operating a drill rig along with his other employees. In general, new employees learn the job in an apprentice style sys­tem. As a result, workers and owners have few opportunities to access uniform health and safety information based upon the job — an outdoor work environment with daily change in work sites. With this information, NIOSH researchers devel­oped two products that deliver health and safety information to fit into the daily work of well drillers. "INTRODUDTION Investigations by the Bureau of Mines have shown that the carbonizing properties of splint and bright coals may differ greatly. In a study of 55 coal columns selected from representative coals of the Appalachian region, Sprunk and coworkers 10/ compared various chemical and physical properties of splint and associated bright coals. Carbonization tests in the Fischer retort at 932°F. (500°C.) showed that, except for bright coals of high oxygen content, the coke residue from bright coal was much more swollen and cellular than that from splint. ·with one exception, agglutinating values determined by the Bureau of Mines test, were lower for splint than for associated bright coal.Because sorting of coal in quantity is tedious and time-consuming, separate types have not been carbonized by the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) test, which requires 85- to 200 pound charges. However, this method has been used to determine the carbonizing properties of samples 0f bed layers that are composed largely of either splint or bright coal.4/ In these earlier tests, which were made at high temperatures on layer samples from the Elkhorn bed, Letcher County, Ky., the splint coal yielded more coke than the bright coal, and this coke was slightly stronger than that from the bright coal. The cokes from samples with large proportions of bright coal were more cellular or porous, as were the low-temperature cokes obtained from carbonization of separated samples of bright coal in the Fischer retort."

Reduce respirable dust exposure of workmen operating auger-type continuous mining machines. Approach: An auger miner was fitted with an exhaust system which draws dust laden air through a [scruber] and discharges it behind the line curtain. How It Works: Dusty air is drawn into the space above the coal conveyor and through a scrubber, by two fans mounted side by side above the conveyor. Exhaust from the fans passes through a duct to the side of the auger miner, and into tubing that runs back and into the air return passage formed by the line curtain. See Figure 1. Of the 5,000 cubic feet per minute of air normally entering the working place, 4/5 is drawn out through the dust exhaust system. The system was installed on a Wilcox Mark 20 Miner and tested underground by personnel of the Bureau's Pittsburgh, Pa., Mining and Safety Research Center, under a cost sharing

The Golden Cross mine is situated in a sensitive environmental setting on the North Island of New Zealand, about 150 kilometres south-east of Auckland and about 8 kilometres NW of Waihi. The mine is situated in dipping topography, with volcanic ashes making up soils, fault zones running through the area, and rainfall of about 3 m per year on average. Water management is the most demanding environmental challenge on site, and a comprehensive programme has been put in place to address tailings deposition, long term tailings storage, and water treatment during and after operations.   The tailings impoundment is built with an underdrainage system that collects groundwaters and waters that seep through the impoundment. The embankment and impoundment are both built to withstand the Maximum Credible Earthquake and the Probable Maximum Flood. Tailings are treated to remove cyanide and to decrease metal solubility to reduce long term risk to water quality after mining. A state-of-the-art water treatment plant is utilised to treat water from the underdrainage system and water decanted from the top of the tailings pond and stormwaters to remove residual cyanide and metals to extremely high standards with a great deal of reliability and at reasonable cost. Closure of the facility addresses long term post mining water quality issues, and rehabilitation of the area with wildlife habitat as a priority.

Several candidate sites have been proposed for the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL), a facility that would provide over 2000 meters of overburden to screen out cosmic rays that would otherwise interfere with experiments. Types of anticipated experiments include: detection of dark matter and stellar neutrinos, and evaluation of deep microbial life forms. Engineering experiments might include more refined scanning devices to “see” rock defects ahead of tunneling, improved predictive models for groundwater inflows and tunnel support requirements, and improved instrumentation for monitoring in-situ stresses, rock deformations, and pore water pressures. Spin-offs from this research might include more sensitive security detectors for scrutinizing shipping containers, new drugs based on new microbes, and improved sensor systems for tunneling. A site near Leavenworth, WA, was assessed and shown to have numerous topographic and geotechnical advantages. Rock cover is on the order of 2250 meters. The granitic bedrock is suitable for tunneling a variety of large underground openings.

China has abundant magnesite resource, but the low-grade and powder ores have always been rejected, which influences the comprehensive utilization of resource and often causes circumstance problems. The present work investigated the preparation of magnesia whisker using magnesite tailings as starting materials by preparation magnesium carbonate whisker as precursor firstly in the route of calcination, hydration, carbonation and pyrolysis, follows by second calcination of the precursor. The influence of pyrolysis conditions and additives on morphology of magnesium carbonate crystal as well as the influence of calcination conditions on morphology of magnesia whisker was investigated. The results showed that thermal decomposition products was MgCO3?3H2O. Magnesium carbonate whisker with length of 10~60 µm and the length-to-diameter ratio of 10~20 was prepared when soluble magnesium salt was added. While temperature was elevated at 1°C?min-1, magnesia whisker with length of 10~60µm was obtained.

This study was a part of two programs: The first, to develop and evaluate high-temperature refractories; the second, to investigate reaction-rate kinetics and phase equilibria in the sinter step of the lime-soda process for the recovery of alumina. High-temperature X-ray diffractometer techniques are to be used extensively in both programs. This paper summarizes developments in the field of high-temperature X-ray diffractometers through 1959, evaluates various furnace designs, and describes briefly the X-ray diffraction facilities of the Federal Bureau of Mines. A more detailed description of the equipment and its calibration is planned in a future paper on thermal expansion and phase inversion of rare-earth oxides.
