The Allen Park Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) Tunnel and relief sewer project, located in the city of Allen Park, MI, is a long-term corrective action designed to bring Sanitary District One?s sanitary system into compliance with its 2005 consent order and service contract with the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD). The $20 million project is intended to reduce Allen Park?s wet weather discharges to DWSD, reduce bypass pumping to the Ecorse Creek and limit the future risk of basement flooding by providing storage during wet weather events and eliminating hydraulic bottlenecks in the sanitary sewer system.

Scanning electron microscope–Mineral Liberation Analyser SEM-MLA can be used to discriminate between hematite/magnetite in iron ores, but achieving backscattered electron (BSE) segmentation between the two minerals is difficult for particles =75 µm using typical preparation and analysis methods for the MLA based on a tungsten filament SEM (Quanta 400) with 25 kV high voltage. Preparing iron ore sample mounts using a slow-speed polishing method, and conducting the experiment on a field emission gun SEM-MLA (Quanta 650) with the high voltage (HV) setting lowered to 15 kV reduces instrument noise and results in very clean BSE images and segmentation. This method requires new X-ray standards to be acquired for each mineral identity at 15 kV because of major changes in the spectra at lower kV. However, once these X-rays are added to the mineral reference list, effective segmentation can be achieved and a proper analysis obtained.CITATION:Grant, D C, Goudie, D J, Voisey, C, Shaffer, M and Sylvester, P, 2017. Complex and distinct geological units spread along the 7-mile long 30-ft inside diameter Upper Rouge Tunnel CSO Control Project in Detroit, Michigan. Its construction is divided in two tunnel construction packages: The South Tunnel, to be driven in finely laminated weak TG Limy Shale, will be excavated by a shielded TBM with precast concrete segmental lining, while the North tunnel, predominantly in a relatively more competent geologic formation Antrim Shale, will be excavated by a main beam TBM with a two-pass lining system. The adits and deaeration chambers will be excavated by sequential excavation method. This paper addresses the process of selecting excavation methods and lining systems for shafts, tunnels, connecting adits, and deaeration chambers.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, converter, nickel, matte, distribution Metallic elements occupy a wide range in granulated nickel converter matte phases. The distribution of these metallic elements, particularly during crystallization path events, appears to be poorly understood. The present study serves to investigate the distribution of Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Pb between nickel-sulphide, copper-sulphide, and alloy phases. A novel combination of thermo-chemical modelling, electron microscopy, and electron probe microanalysis was applied to understand crystallization path events and the associated metallic element distribution. This study has demonstrated that major Ni incorporated during copper-sulphide crystallization would serve to mobilize minor Co towards distribution in copper-sulphide phases. In addition, solid solution substitution of Cu by Ni is manifested by compositional zoning of copper-sulphide phases. The role played by Ni during alloy crystallization suggests that minor Co was also mobilized, along with an increase in principal Ni. Fe, by contrast, seems to be incompatible with principal Ni. In addition, solid solution substitution of Ni with PGEs and Cu is manifested by compositional zoning of NiCu-alloy phases.

The Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa) announced that the second unit at its experimental facility at Palestine, Tex. would begin production -in 1979, increasing the capacity of the facility to 30,000 tons per year. The plant uses an experimental process based on the electrolysis of aluminum chloride and reportedly uses 4 to 5 kilowatt hours per pound of aluminum produced, compared to an industry average of about 7 to 8 kilowatt hours per pound. Alcoa has reportedly signed a letter of intent with the Chinese government under which Alcoa will conduct feasibility studies on two new integrated aluminum projects and modernization of an existing aluminum plant. If the study results are favorable, Alcoa Engineers Inc. and the Import and Export Company of the Chinese Ministry of Metallurgical Industry could negotiate agreements to provide Alcoa technology and services for the projects.

Part I. The interaction between potassium ethyl xanthate and lead salts has been studied thermo-chemically. It is shown that ethyl xanthate reacts with lead carbonate, basic carbonate, thiosulfate and sulfate according to principles of simple chemistry, whereas reactions with lead sulfite, metasulfite, basic thiosulfate and hydroxide at high pH are associated with secondary reactions. A new compound "xanthogen thiosulfate" is postulated. Part 11. Adsorption of ethyl xanthate on galena has been studied quantitatively and thennochemi-cally. It is shown that an ion-exchange mechanism governs the adsorption process and that the heat of adsorption of xanthate on galena is equivalent to the heat of reaction of ethyl xanthate with bulk lead salts. It is concluded that the entropy content of the surface "compound" on galena is different from that of a corresponding bulk lead salt. Alkali depression is in part shown to be due to the instability of the xanthate-galena system at high pH and to the formation of basic lead salts. Sulfate and carbonate ions are shown to have a stabilizing effect on the xanthate-galena system. PARTI. THERMOCHEMISTRY OF ETHYL XANTHATE AND OF ITS REACTION WITH LEAD SALTS In the past little attention has been paid to the chemistry of lead xanthate. It is known that xan-thates form slightly soluble compounds with lead and that suspensions of lead xanthates in alkaline solution decompose rather readily.' The solubility of lead ethyl xanthate is of the order of 2.6 x 10-6 moles per 1. At increasing pH the xanthate concentration of a saturated solution contains more xanthate. Thus at pH 11 this xanthate content is about 100-fold larger than at pH 7.1 Xanthates are known to be consumed when added to a suspension of slightly soluble lead salts such as lead sulfate and lead carbonate. It is unknown to what extent this xanthate consumption is due to a simple chemical reaction because, frequently, observations are made which reveal secondary reaction products in such reactions. Thermochemical study of the reaction between xanthate and lead salts offers a means to clarify the significance of these reactions as the enthalpy changes can be accurately predicted from heat of formation of lead salts in pure solution reactions. In the present work the heats of formation of lead ethyl xanthate from potassium ethyl xanthate and lead salts are determined and some thermochemical aspects of xanthate in solution are studied. The results of these investigations are presented in Part I. In Part II the heat of adsorption of ethyl xanthate on galena surfaces is presented. All enthalpy changes were measured directly in a microcalorimeter. Advanced Process Control (APC) has been one of the most beneficial tools in the past decades available to minerals processing industry. Low capital cost together with significant improvements in process optimization have made APC an attractive investment option for nearly all mineral processing units. During economic downturns, importance of process optimization becomes even more relevant as metal producers tend to target de-bottlenecking and process efficiency improvements rather than large-scale capacity upgrades. APC project clearly has a lot of potential to improve process performance but there are also some pitfalls to be identified and avoided in order to achieve a desired outcome. Above all, APC project implementation is collaboration between the system vendor and user. Targets for the optimization must be agreed together with the customer and process performance must be defined before and after the optimization project. Most importantly, performance of the process must be monitored on a continuous basis during and after the project and potentially improved further. This paper discusses Outotec’s experiences from various concentrator optimization projects. Some examples are discussed in more details; however, the main target is to present general guidelines enabling a successful APC project implementation.

From Sept. 22-24, the Las Vegas Convention Center will be home to MinExpo 2008, the world?s largest mining equipment show that comes along once every four years. Sponsored by the National Mining Association (NMA), this year?s show is on pace to be the largest ever. Nearly 1,300 exhibitors have purchased nearly 55,700 hm2 (600,000 sq ft) of booth space. At the center of it all will be some of the most impressive mining equipment that the industry has to offer. And in the shadows of the massive haul trucks, drill rigs and bulldozers, attendees will be able to see the latest and greatest products including hand tools; the latest in automation and robotics; safety and communications equipment; longwall mining equipment; engines and parts; materials handling and processing equipment and services; pollution control equipment; reclamation equipment and services; computer applications; consulting and financial services and more. While many companies will be on hand to display the tried and true, there will also be plenty of new things to see. ?We anticipate that a whole range of new products will be introduced at the show,? the NMA said of the show that has been called the world?s richest deposit of mining technology, services and products. In addition to the show that will take place in Center Hall and North Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center, MinExpo 2008 includes a conference program with 20 educational sessions that will tackle the most timely and pressing issues affecting the mining industry. Many of the industry?s top professionals will lead the discussions.

Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. Detailed paragenetic studies of the post-tectonic fracture-hosted vein mineralisation have demonstrated a complex paragenesis, reflecting a multi-phase combination of regional metallogenesis and tectonics through time. Previously published work regarding paragenesis and zoning was oversimplified. Two major epochs of mineralisation resulted in the emplacement of the A1 group of assemblages, from which lead, copper and silver were the main metals mined, and the A2 group, whose galena is only moderately argentiferous but which were major sources of lead and zinc. Tectonic and tentative isotopic evidence points to post-orogenic relaxation as the mechanism for development of the A1 assemblages in the early Devonian, whereas the A2 assemblages are believed to reflect Variscan extensional regimes and regional metallogenesis in the early Carboniferous and Permian

Fragmentation analysis of blast or crushed rock material is a time-consuming and costly process. During the last two decades, the mining industry has been investigating image-based analysis systems as an alternative to generate fragmentation results. Many image-based techniques and commercial products have emerged during the last few years, and the mining industry has recently begun using these tools for real-time estimation of size distributions. Some existing systems require manual image editing to add or delete edges (or net) before executing the fragmentation analysis routine. This manual procedure may take hours of time for each image analyzed. Reliable and robust image segmentation should be able to handle a wide range of rock textures and sizes under a variety of lighting conditions. This paper describes a novel software application, which has the capability to autonomously capture images and analyze them to generate the particle size distribution. The system can also process a batch of images captured during a fixed duration of time and produce the overall particle size distribution. The new method has different layers of segmentation modules, which allows the system to operate under a wide range of rock textures and lighting conditions. A new grey-level slicing technique is developed which can perform under a range of illuminating conditions. The Canny-based edge detection technique is used to segment rocks appearing in dark regions.

Drill cores from Section 62, New Broken Hill Consolidated Ltd., were used to study the petrology of rocks associated with the zinc lode. The distribution of the rock types in relation to the lode structure was determined. The distribution of the gahnite-bearing rocks was shown to be only partly conformable with the structure.It was concluded that large scale metasomatism was not widespread, that the rocks associated with the lode (except, perhaps, the quartz-gahnite-garnet rocks) were formed by metamorphism of sediments, and that rocks and lode were contemporaneously metamorphosed.INTRODUCTIONThis investigation was undertaken in order to study the rock types associated with the zinc lode of the Broken Hill orebody, and their relationship to the structure of the ore horizons. The work was confined almost entirely to the laboratory, and is therefore limited in its scope. It is hoped, however, that the information gained may throw some new light on the genesis of the lode.Certain inferences which are drawn from this work are at variance with the ideas of a number of earlier workers.In particular, the idea of large scale metasomatism developing many of the rocks associated with the lode, especially those containing manganese, is questioned. On the contrary, the rocks associated with the lode are more simply explained as highly metamorphosed sediments, in some cases modified by water introduced from surrounding rocks into zones of strong folding and faulting. As a corollary, a metamorphicsedimentary origin for the lode material, either as a concentrated sulphide deposit, or somewhat disseminated...

Critical and strategic metals are often present in small quantities in low-grade domestic ores. When these ores are leached, the resulting solution usually contains the metals in very dilute quantities. Selective electrowinning from dilute electrolytes was investigated by the Bureau of Mines. A metal deposit containing 84 pct nickel was electrowon from the leach solution of a complex domestic ore bulk flotation concentrate originally containing approximately 2 wt-pct nickel. Key to achieving accelerated deposition rates, in the case of dilute solutions, is the rapid movement of the electrolyte through the electrowinning cell. Pure, synthetic nickel electrolytes were used to establish deposition parameters, and to optimize electrolyte velocity or mass transfer rates. Hydrodynamic and electrodeposition parameters for both the synthetic and leach electrolytes are presented and the experimental research described. Selective electrowinning appears to offer a viable alternative to physical separation methods to obtain separate metal "concentrates" from low-grade ores.

"For its end of life, Kemess Mine processed its difficult-to-treat hypogene ore from the east pit, which is a lower grade copper and higher pyrite content gold ore. Metallurgical testwork showed that improvement was possible with finer grinding. In July 2010, small grinding media were introduced into the regrind mill resulting to a nearly 50% decrease of the power draw with a finer grind, an increase of 1.1% in the final copper grade, an increase of 1.2% in copper and 2.9% in gold recoveries at the cleaners. The overall recoveries of copper and gold increased by 0.6% and 1.3% respectively.INTRODUCTION Kemess Mine was located at 430 km North West of Prince George in North Central British Colombia. Its production started in May 1998 by Royal Oak Mines and was acquired by Northgate Exploration in 2000. Kemess reached its end of life production with its last of production on March 9th, 2011. The concentrator nominal capacity was 56,000 TPD consisting of a primary gyratory crusher feeding two identical conventional SAB circuits totalizing 35,840 kW available for grinding. Rougher flotation consists of four parallel rows of eight 130 m³ tank cells to produce a concentrate of 2% Cu and 6 gr/t Au which was pumped to a 5 m x 10.8 m regrind ball mill. The regrind installed power was 4,480 kW to generate a final grind of 80% passing 40 microns. This product fed the two stage cleaner flotation circuit, first stage being two parallel rows conventional 17 m³ Denver cells and second stage, two 3.3 m x 11.0 m flotation columns in series, designed and constructed by Kemess, to produce a 22% copper concentrate grade. The cleaner flotation middlings were returned back to the regrind mill (Froehling, Mohns, Roman & Grady, 2005; Froehling, Mohns, Rajwani & Fullam, 2007). The large copper-gold porphyry deposit was composed of 15% of oxidized supergene and leach cap ore and 85% of hypogene ore having three major alteration zones, mainly characterized by their sulphur/sulphide content. Chalcopyrite is the main copper mineral species with minor bornite. Gold was mainly present as free gold or electrum. The first alteration zone consisted of a phyllic alteration characterized by moderate and intense sericite alteration which had the highest mill throughput and twice the mine grade when in contact with the supergene horizon. The second zone consisted of a potassic alteration characterized by more competent groundmass and moderate to intense quartz stockwork which had a slightly lower mill throughput. Finally, a third alteration found beneath and on the east side of the deposit having almost no quartz stockwork and hardened groundmass, sulphide content is two to four times more. This zone had the lower mill throughput with significant drop in the mine average gold and copper grade. Through its mine life, the average life of mine copper head grade was 0.21% Cu and 0.64 gr/t Au. Head grades began to decrease from 2008 to be substantially lower in 2011 as shown in Table 1."

"Acid mine drainage (AMD) is one of the most significant environmental challenges facing the mining industry worldwide. It occurs as a result of natural oxidation of sulphide minerals contained in mining wastes at operating and closed/decommissioned mine sites. AMD may adversely impact the surface water and groundwater quality and land use due to its typical low pH, high acidity and elevated concentrations of metals and sulphate content. Once it develops at a mine, its control can be difficult and expensive. If generation of AMD cannot be prevented, it must be collected and treated. Treatment of AMD usually costs more than control of AMD and may be required for many years after mining activities have ceased. Therefore, application of appropriate control methods to the site at the early stage of the mining would be beneficial.Although prevention of AMD is the most desirable option, a cost-effective prevention method is not yet available. The most effective method of control is to minimize penetration of air and water through the waste pile using a cover, either wet (water) or dry (soil), which is placed over the waste pile. Despite their high cost, these covers cannot always completely stop the oxidation process and generation of AMD. Application of more than one option might be required.Early diagnosis of the problem, identification of appropriate prevention/control measures and implementation of these methods to the site would reduce the potential risk of AMD generation. AMD prevention/control measures broadly include use of covers, control of the source, migration of AMD, and treatment. This paper provides an overview of AMD prevention and control options applicable for developing, operating and decommissioned mines."

Sishen Iron Ore Mine is situated 280 km north-west of Kimberley in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. The mine produces and sells high quality iron ore of various specifications to various national and international clients. The saleable product is derived from the blending and beneficiation of different types and qualities of hematite iron ore. This paper documents the new developments which were implemented (or are in the process of being implemented) on the mine in the long-term planning, medium-term planning, grade control and material tracking in the beneficiation plant with special attention being paid to the quality of the final, saleable product. The process starts with the long-term planning where the pit shell and pit optimization is determined by Whittle 4X. New developments include the introduction of a linear programming based scheduling system to enhance the long-term schedule generated by Whittle 4X. The LP route was decided on in order to take into account all the constraining factors of the final product that could not be configured in Whittle. To complement this the XPAC Auto Scheduler scheduling package was introduced to do the medium-term mine scheduling. This 18-month rolling plan includes cost parameters to enable the planner to extract a detailed operational budget from the scheduling while ensuring that production standards are maintained and grade constraints are met. The existing grade control system was enhanced with GPS capabilities and a computer system to do material tracking. The high precision GPS system introduced on the shovels allows for the accurate control of the loading procedures at the mining face. Because of the complicated geology and grade composition of blasting blocks it is imperative to accurately differentiate between different materials in the same blasting block and being able to excavate that with the loading equipment. The GPS system on the trucks allows for accurate location monitoring of dumping in order to keep track of specific material types. The state-of-the-art material tracking system developed for Sishen will enable the grade control officer to keep track and record various parameters of the material from its in situ position in the blasting blocks, through the crusher and onto different stockpiles, in various stages of the beneficiation process and onto the blending beds, into the dispatching trains and eventually into the ships for international distribution. These developments elevate the Sishen planning and grade control systems to a new level of service excellence from which management can obtain accurate and timely information on product status. It also enables Sishen to maximize resource utilization while still complying with the tough market constraints.

The mining industry has come to rely on imaging devices to monitor and record all kinds of activities. We use them to measure, improve the process, ensure security, increase production and automate machinery. Cameras can be installed in locations most people wouldn?t want to live and be our ?eyes? to record the events at that location. This paper discusses digital imaging, the equipment, methods, techniques and information that can be learned from digital devices used in mining operations. The guy who said ?a picture is worth a thousand words? probably understated it. Images are the perfect way to document conditions before, after and even during mining activities. Today?s wide choice of cameras, camcorders and other digital devices allow us to record most activities and events. The technology is advancing at a high rate. Digital cameras and camcorders are marvels of technology with high resolution optics, compact size, automatic time and date stamp, great battery life, shutters to freeze motion and computers to auto focus and eliminate jitter (image stabilization). Add to this the economical price and ease of use and everyone in this industry should be aware of the possibilities.
