THE power requirements of the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company at Queenstown, Tasmania, have, since the inception of smelting operations in June) 1896, been derived continuously from the extensive forests in the watershed of the Queen River, adjacent to the works, the fuewoodbeing of good quality, mainly composed of myrtle or beech (Fagus Ounninghami), eucalypts, and manuka (Leptospermum ericoides). The country is very rugged and mountainous, indented by numerous ravines and gullies, and intersected by, many creeks, which are subject to periodical floods, under the influence of a heavy and persistent rainfall, which averages about 110 in per annum. The areas so far exploited aggregate a total of about42 square miles, and this denuded country gives promise of ultimately becoming very valuable pastoral ground for cattle-raising. Dimension stones, with their almost infinite variety, have a broad range of properties and uses. Natural stone was beyond doubt the first mineral commodity used by man. Today dimension stone has widened to encompass building exteriors and interiors, decorative and ornamental modes, statuary, monuments, paving, curbing, flagging, roofing, and miscellaneous categories such as blackboards, surface plates, and honestones. For many purposes, it competes with greater or less success with alternate materials such as concrete, metal, brick, plastic, or glass. The almost ubiquitous geographic distribution of stone resources is the basis for a dimension stone producer industry in almost every State and in almost every land. In the United States, alone, dimension stone sold or used by quarries is valued at 2 million to 3 million dollars annually. Mining, finishing, transportation, and use technology have been modernized, resulting in a broader spectrum of stone products and new adaptions in use. Increased efficiencies also have been reflected in costs and prices and, coupled with gains that should be realized from current research, auger well for continued vitality of the ancient and honorable dimension stone craft.

The U.S. economy showed further strength during the third quarter of 1983, continuing the upward trend discussed in the last two issues of Minerals and Materials. The National Association of Purchasing Management composite index increased to a 10-year high of 67. 1 in July. (A value of 50 or greater indicates expanding industrial activity.) The index, a weighted composite of new orders, production, employment, vendor performance, and inventories, is derived from a survey of purchasing agents for about 250 industrial firms. Investment and Other National Economic Indicators The strong consumer surge of second quarter 1983 was reinforced during the third quarter by the performance of private investment. Because of this, many analysts became more optimistic about the strength of the recovery and its potential for being sustained. Capital investment growth, negative since 1980, was positive for every investment component in the third quarter of 1983. Preliminary estimates indicate a real increase of $1.4 billion (at an annual rate) in private investment expenditures on nonresidential structures, an increase of $4.3 billion (at an annual rate) for producers' durable equipment, and an increase of $4.8 billion (at an annual rate) in real inventory levels. The second quarter 1983 increase in expenditures on producers' durable equipment was the first indicator that investment recovery would occur during the rest of the year (table 1). Corporate profits in total manufacturing increased $6.5 billion from first quarter to second quarter 1983 (table 2).

A review of past work and results obtained has been published. The present paper deals with a study of line-radio or wired-wireless methods of communication, herein electrical energy is transmitted by metallic conductors.The use of line-radio over metallic conductors has been practiced for a number of years, and at present is being used on a large scale in long-distance carrier-current telephone and telegraph. The early work of the U. S. Army Signal Corps and the Bureau of Standards in using ordinary radio transmitting and receiving apparatus for communication over metallic conductors was been descried. Later publications describe commercial applications, and an excellent treatise and resume is given by E. Colpitts and C. B. Blackwell.Scope of ReportThis report contains (1) a discussion of the chief factors affecting carrier-current transmission, with particular reference in application to underground communication for mines; (2) a description of typical underground circuits used for power and lighting; and (3) description of apparatus used and results obtained in line-radio experiments in coal mines near Pittsburgh, with circuit diagrams, and conclusions as to power requirements and limitations for mine use."

The Huntington Beach oil field is on the Pacific Coast, southeast of the City of Los Angeles (Fig. 1). It lies both onshore and offshore. Most of the onshore section is operated by Standard Oil Co. of California, WOI. The Tar reservoir is of upper Pliocene age, about 200 ft thick, and consists principally of fine-grained, unconsolidated, somewhat shaly sand, with thin inter-bedded shale stringers throughout (Fig. 2). The reservoir is a broad, highly faulted, elongated anticline, with an areal extent of about 370 acres. Most of the faults bisecting the structure are normal, trend north-south, and are the main cause of reservoir discontinuity (Figs. 3 and 4). From 1964 to Dec., 1967, 259 steam stimulations were performed on a total of 125 Tar sand wells. Eighty-six new wells were drilled and steam stimulated. Of the total, 96 have been stimulated twice, 34 three times and 3 four times. During this same period, a two-injector steam drive pilot has been in progress. The response obtained from this project has been compared with the response to cyclic stimulation. This paper presents an analysis of the field observations for the two methods of thermal recovery. History of Development Drilling to the Tar pool commenced in 1924 with an initial well production of 40 to 50 B/D of 12o API gravity oil. Complete primary development of the pool has been spread over several years. Approxi- mately 40 wells were drilled during the first phase of development, which was completed in 1945. The subsequent primary development started in 1960 with initial well productions of 30 to 40 B/D oil. Thirty-seven wells were completed in the Tar pool during this phase. For the most part, slotted, gravel flow packed liners have been used in the wells in this pool. A cyclic steam stimulation pilot was initiated in March, 1964. Based on the very successful stimulation in the pilot area, the cyclic stimulation project was expanded to include all of the Tar pool wells producing at the end of 1965 (Fig. 5). Also, a development drilling program was begun at this time. To date, 86 new wells have been drilled under this program. The number of wells drilled each year in this secondary phase of development is also shown in Fig. 5. New Well Completion Practices Most of the new wells have been completed to produce from both the Upper and Lower Tar zones. Generally, a casing stub is cemented from the top of Lower Tar to the base of clean Upper Tar sands to exclude intermediate water-bearing sands. The water string is then cemented from the top of Upper Tar to about 1,500 ft with neat cement and 30 percent silica flour. The annulus from 1,500 ft to surface is then filled with a petroleum-based gel through a high-temperature port collar. "Since the publication of empirical cyclone models by Lynch and Rao in 1975 and by Plitt in 1976, the technical literature on this subject has consisted primarily of reports of applications, with only a few articles discussing basic modifications or enhancements in model form. In fact, most of the modelling eff ort in this period has been concerned with theoretical models based on the hydrodynamics of multiphase flow. (Preliminary resutls have been encouraging, however, it will be some time before this approach reaches the practical application stage.) This paper presents a review of empirical cyclone modelling technology, with an emphasis on developments since the mid 1970s. The topics addressed include homogeneous and heterogeneous ores, parameter estimation techniques, parameter confidence intervals, and the introduction of a new conceptual model of cyclone operation.IntroductionSince their first reported application in the mineral industry by Driessen (1939), cyclones have become a common unit operation in all of the process industries. The widespread use of the cyclone stems from its relative low cost and its versatility. It can be employed to carry out liquid-liquid, solid-liquid and solid-solid separations. It is the area of solid-solid separation which is of greatest interest to a mineral processing engineer. Historically, this area was divided into two application categories: (I) Separation according to density, the cyclone washer, and, (2) Classification according to particle size, the cyclone ciassifier. (When water is the carrier fluid, the cyclone is more often called the hydrocyclone. For the purposes of this paper the two names are used interchangeably). Classification is the principal application in mineral processing circuit s. Within this category, the cyclone is most commonly employed to provide some positive control over the size distribution of product from a grinding circuit. Other uses include sand-slime separation prior to froth flotation and mill tailings treatment, either for dam construction or in backfill preparation."

This Handbook also contains references to health and safety regulations in Chapter 3.2 and environmental protection in Chapters 3.4 and 7.3.

Commercial or industrial explosives are mechanically-mixed, fuel-oxidizer composites which exhibit varying degrees of non-ideal behavior. Non-ideality results from a relatively slow and state-insensitive reaction rate (Lee, 1990) and is characterized by C-J pressures, velocities or expansion isentropes significantly lower than those expected from equilibrium, steady-state calculations such as Tiger or BKW (Mader, 1979). This departure results from significant amounts of explosive material which remain unreacted at the sonic point. Energy released by continued combustion within the emergent supersonic region downstream of the sonic point, constrained by local sound speed, cannot flow to the shock front and do work on it. The significant amount of this ‘late energy” and its slow time rate of release must be considered in any blast performance model.

IN conducting the manufacture of extruded brass rods and brass forgings it has been noticed that there is considerable variation in the physical properties, particularly the machinability of different rods and forgings, even though the composition, working temperatures and method of manufacture remain the same. It is the purpose of this paper to attempt to establish the cause and extent of this variation, and also to determine whether variations in composition within certain defined limits influence hardness and machinability to any marked degree. The writer believes that this variation probably is due to the variation in grain size of the metal, therefore the microstructure of several compositions under various conditions of working were examined in an effort to establish this as a fact.

A wide-ranging base of jig data was collected from various types of commercial jigs in 9 coal preparation plants in China, and a complete data analysis was made. It was found that the sharpness ofseparation was very variable, which demonstrates the complex interplay of the many factors which influence jig performance. Tests showed that there exist optimum frequency ranges in each compartment of a jig. Stepwise regression analysis indicated that the sharpness of separation is most sensitive to the intake fraction ofthe air cycle, the frequency, and the feed rate. By means of non-linear curve fitting techniques and statistical analysis, several mathematical models were developed to describe both partition curve and the jig performance, for simulation purposes.

A detailed analysis of the geomechanical behaviour in rock cutting with a diamond saw is provided to obtain a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in the process. The energy of elastic deformation (before failure) and plastic deformation (post failure) was determined in uniaxial compression tests as well as the energy consumed per unit volume in the cutting process. The test samples are White and Ruivina marbles from Borba - Vila Viçosa in Portugal. Correlations between total deformation specific energy and cutting specific energy, normal and tangential forces and diamond indentation are analysed, and some conclusions are presented.

Horizontal rotating mills are being used all over the world associated with different mineral and power generation industries. David Brown South Africa, with over 140 years of experience in gear manufacture and design, has been supplying these industries with innovative designs at exceptional quality. The gearing systems associated with these industries are challenged daily with operating conditions with are not always fully understood. Failures are therefore experienced, over time in the industry, which can therefore not always be fully explained. David Brown South Africa has developed a gear monitoring system, the Intelligent Gearing System, in association with Transmission Dynamics (UK), in order to monitor and analyze these operating conditions in real time. The system has been designed on the principles of Six Sigma, incorporating Design for Six Sigma. The purpose with this system design is to monitor the operating conditions on the pinion, record the information and analyze the data in relation to the rate of fatigue damage to the girth gear and pinion. This is done in real time and unattended. The output from the Intelligent Gearing System can be fed back into the operating system of the mill user, in order to display an alarm for operating conditions exceeding the design criteria as well as information on the rate of fatigue damage due to these operating conditions. When the mill operating conditions are better understood, and the effect on the fatigue life of the mill gearing components, mill users can forecast critical spare holding levels with an increased accuracy. The Intelligent Gearing System also allows early actions to remove reasons for system overloads.

Raising capital by issuing debt or equity is necessary in almost every corporation. In the field of corporate finance, the raising of capital is a heavily-studied topic. However, some of what is studied on this topic in corporate finance is not applicable in the mining industry. There are also many financing options that were created for the mining industry such as flow-through shares, prepaid forwards, and royalty sales. The cyclical nature of the industry makes the risk-return profile of financings more difficult to estimate than in other industries. Additionally, the methods used to assess firm value are different than other industries, as the values of orebodies are not included on balance sheets. For precious metals companies, which are a hedge against most other securities, there are additional complications with determining investor expectations and cost of equity. This thesis puts forth a decision-making framework to explain mine financing choices from the perspective of mining companies. The approach is threefold. First, all of the major equity and debt financing instruments available to mining companies are presented and analyzed. Each financing method is assessed on a wide range of criteria. Next, these concepts are applied in case studies of four companies: BHP Billiton, Barrick Gold, Teck Resources, and Noront Resources. For each company, the overall choice of financing methods is shown and analyzed. The effect of financing choices on the weighted average cost of capital (WACC) is calculated. The final section deals with case studies of individual mine finance decisions during the past two years.

This report describes a process for quickly developing information that is useful for skills training. The process is called job training analysis (JTA). Its main use is to structure skills training at the jobsite. JTA supports structured skills training by identifying the job duties, tasks, and steps and the reasons why those job components are important. The outcome of the JTA process is a worksheet—a training outline based on the knowledge and expertise of experienced workers. Time invested in developing a JTA will result in significantly more time saved when it is used appropriately by skilled trainers. Like a roadmap, JTA saves time and energy. Experimental work at several mine sites helped document, refine, and validate the JTA process. JTAs for two mining jobs—roof bolting and lift truck operation—at two different mine sites are used to illustrate some of the concepts and the specific JTA process described in this report. The work at these two sites was influenced by cooperative work between the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at several other mine sites and prior collaborative work with the U.S. Navy. The mining JTA process is grounded within the military research on the design of instructional systems. MSHA and NIOSH worked to simplify and apply the military training development model for mining industry use through collaborative work at several mine sites. The JTA process involves three activities: (1) planning, (2) a 1- to 3-day workshop where the JTA is developed using facilitated work with subject-matter experts, and (3) followup. Guidelines and considerations for each of these activities are included. Results indicate that the JTA process has been well received and valued by mining industry participants. It blends aspects of health and safety, production, maintenance, and crew coordination.

This survey is one of a series of Bureau of Mines publications designed to serve the needs of Government and industry for comprehensive information on mineral commodities and activities. Copper, a versatile metal, has been vital to all civilizations from pre-historic times to the present. Its essential value in antiquity and until the nineteenth century arose from its malleability and ease of working, its corrosion resistance and durability, its attractive colors in alloyed and unalloyed forms, and, of course, its availability. The principal uses were for tools, utensils, vessels, weapons, pipe, statuary and other objects of art, and for building and architectural purposes where formability, permanence, and beauty were necessary qualities. Utilization of copper based on these physical and mechanical properties has grown tremendously for commercial, structural, mechanical, architectural, and art items; and its capacity for forming numerous alloys has led to a myriad of applications from miniature copper and brass eyelets to huge bronze battleship propellers. The early nineteenth century marks the epoch of the greatest use of copper, transmitting electrical energy. This particular property of copper is fundamental to the spectacular growth of the electrical industry and all associated industries relying on electricity for power, light, and heat. More than half of all copper produced is used for transmission of electricity.

The need to optimize surface mining operations has led to the use of discrete event simulation (DES) modeling of truck-shovel systems. Often, these models assume truck cycle times are independent and identically distributed (iid) random variables, although, with significant bunching on the haul routes, this may not be valid. The objective of this paper is to present a methodology to (i) account for truck bunching due to slow trucks; and (ii) test for cycle time dependence (i.e. whether truck cycle time data is iid or not). We built a DES model that accounts for bunching due to a slow truck(s) and used the cycle times as data for further analysis. We then tested for cycle time dependence using Pearson correlation coefficients. The results show significant correlation of truck cycle times for different number slow trucks, with variable speeds. Assuming iid in modeling results in over-estimation of productivity and the uncertainty surrounding it. The over-estimation of uncertainty is pronounced when the relative difference in truck speed increases. The confidence interval of the means of truck loads/shift decreases with increasing number of slow operators. This work extends the usefulness of DES in truck-shovel applications.

"There has recently been a resurgence of interest in unit flotation of mill discharges. At the Kidd Creek concentrator, this technique has been successfully applied to silver flotation in a 3050 mtpd silver-copper-lead-zinc division. The major incentive has been improved silver payment through increased overall recovery and better distribution between the sequential copper, lead and zinc concentrates. A large, but variable fraction of the silver in the ore is present as native silver and, being dense and malleable, is susceptible to overgrinding. Grinding circuit surveys showed high concentrations of silver in both primary and secondary circulating loads. Laboratory testwork confirmed that this was selectively flotable, identified the secondary ball mill discharge as the best feed stream and optimized flotation conditions. A 10 t/h pilot plant campaign confirmed that the rate of accumulation of silver was sufficient to sustain continuous production of a silver concentrate and that flotation of the whole stream was not necessary.The present 30 t/h production circuit recovers from 5 to 50% of the silver in the ore at a concentration ratio between 25 and 250. The circuit also contributes to a better understanding of ore mineralogy, as an 'on-line' indicator of elemental silver content."
