The Geotechnical Engineer is faced to view problems emerging from the task of protecting the environment and also the problems related to prevention of natural hazarders. Geo-Environmental Engineering, based on the development of geotechnical engineering, addresses the problems for the industrial world and the impact on health and welfare in relation to pollution of the ground. In the recent years, acute land pollution due to indiscriminate discharge of industrial effluents especially Organic acid based effluents has become one of the major concern due to erosion in the privatization of sustainable development under Indian Scenario. To study the effect of chemical changes on soil properties due to amino acid effluent contamination on soil and erosion behavoiur. The changes in the soil properties of effluent contaminated clay and silty soil were experimentally observed to be due to the interaction of organic and inorganic constituents of effluent on index properties of soil. The surface reactivity of soil mass is experimentally reported to be varying proportionately with respect to clay (%) in the soil. Also higher surface reactivity of clay increases the Solid Retension Time (SRT) with increase in rate of chemical transformation of organic and inorganic solids within soil. Hence soil S1 (high clay content 54.5%) showed increased SRT and soil S3 (low clay content, high silt and clay content 94.9%) showed decreased SRT and long transformation stage.

"A ball charge dynamics model is presented. Simulation results are compared with observed data showing good correlation. Based on the charge dynamics models, a liner wear model is presented along with some wear simulation results. Using the charge dynamics model with the liner wear model, it is possible to envision the predictions of mill power consumption as a function of liner wear. Further work is needed to validate the liner wear model.IntroductionFrom a process control point of view, industrial systems can be considered stationary or non-stationary. For example, the physical properties, such as geometric and/or material, of a system considered stationary do not change with time. However, this is not true for non-stationary systems such as those found in the mining industry where process dynamics are often violent with wear being an intrinsic process phenomenon.In this paper, a model for ball charge dynamics will be presented along with a description for liner wear. Simulation results for power draft prediction using the charge model will be compared with observed data. Further, liner wear results will also be presented."

"Bubble size in flotation is strongly influenced by frother concentration in the pulp liquor. There is no accepted method of judging the dosage and thus how effectively frother is being distributed to control bubble size is not known. This will hamper certain plant test work where constant bubble size (e.g., when comparing reagents) is implicit. Bubble size is not easy to measure in plant and gas holdup is suggested as a surrogate in the development of a proposed “meter” to estimate frother concentration. The meter is calibrated to enable frother concentration to be estimated on samples drawn from any location in the flotation circuit. The meter and its calibration are described.As general background the action of frothers in reducing bubble size by retarding coalescence is discussed and the bubble generation systems for which the effect will be important are considered.INTRODUCTIONBubble size is an important variable in flotation. The flotation rate constant k has been related to mean bubble size Db by k % Db -n with n ranging up to 2 (Ahmed and Jameson, 1989) and even 3 (Yoon, 1993). Recent work has introduced k % Sb, the bubble surface area flux, given by Sb = 6 Jg / Db (where Jg is the superficial gas velocity or volumetric gas rate per unit cell cross-sectional area), i.e., n = 1 (Gorain et al., 1998). Regardless of the exact value of n, the significance of bubble size in flotation remains. In many plant trials it will be implicit that bubble size has not changed and attention will focus on other process variables. The measurement of bubble size, or a surrogate, would be useful addition to any test work.The size of the bubbles is influenced by several variables, gas rate, gas injection system (e.g., impeller design and rotation speed in a mechanical cell) and pulp composition (chemicals added, percent solids), but the most important is frother concentration (Harris, 1976). The frother functions by retarding coalescence (see appendix), which acts to preserve the small bubbles generated in the pulp (and permits a stable froth to form on top of the pulp). The measurement of bubble size is thus related to measuring frother concentration. The distribution of frother and whether sufficient (to control bubble size) is reaching the intended parts of the circuit then become important considerations. At present there is no simple way to judge frother concentration in a plant. In this communication we introduce a possible methodology, a “frother concentration meter”."

"As part of a larger investigation on generation of fines from mining activities and their effect on downstream operations, ore samples from Onaping area stockpiles of Falconbridge Ltd were studied. Batch flotation tests were conducted on the stockpile samples and fresh ore samples to explore the effect of stockpiling on grade-recovery performance. Head grade and particle size distribution of the samples from stockpiles were adjusted so that the samples compared are similar to each other. In additional tests, fresh ore samples were blended with stockpile samples at various percentages, representing 27.4, 50.2 and 81.5% of stockpile samples.The samples from stockpiles produced inferior nickel grade-recovery curves compared to fresh ore. The poorer grade-recovery performance was attributable to two factors. First, a significant dilution effect was observed due to the nearly complete flotation of pyrrhotite. Secondly, while pyrrhotite from stockpiled ore became highly floatable, the same stockpiling conditions caused nickel losses that were attributable to non-floatability of some pentlandite.In the case of blending, there was generally insignificant difference in the nickel grade-recovery between fresh and blended samples when the blending cases involved 27.4 and 50.2% stockpile samples. However, an increase in pyrrhotite recovery was observed for both blending cases. At 81.5% blending case, degraded grade-recovery was significant primarily due to the nearly complete flotation of pyrrhotite. There was a small, but noticeable amount of nickel loss for this case. However, for lower ratios of blending this loss was negligible.The increase in pyrrhotite recovery was partly attributed to its activation by Cu and Ni ions. Formation of a significant amount of elemental sulphur was also apparent from analysis of stockpiled samples. It can be concluded that pyrrhotite is mildly oxidized under stockpiling conditions while part of the pentlandite undergoes a more severe oxidation."

"An autogenous grinding circuit was commissioned at the Brunswick concentrator in October 1998. The autogenous grinding circuit replaced existing surface crushing plants, fine ore storage, rod and primary ball mills. The 8.54m diameter x 4.27m long (EGL) AN1 mill is driven by a bidirectional variable speed 6.3MW ABB wound rotor motor with Slip Energy Recovery (SER) drive. The AG mill was subsequently converted to SAG operation in May 1999 for a number of reasons. The mill is operated in closed circuit with horizontally inclined 660mm diameter cyclones to produce a circuit product P80 of 85 microns. Extensive test work and JKSimMet design modeling resulted in a production circuit operating closely within design expectations.The circuit is highly instrumented and controlled via a hybrid Programmable Logic Controller (PLC-5) and Fisher PROVOX Distributed Control System (DCS) that is in communication with the property information highway. An expert control system (Gensym G2) is used for control of the SAG mill load.Engineering and construction were completed in 28 months from the time of management approval for the project. The Brunswick AG/SAG mill circuit was commissioned on schedule at the $M 23.5 forecast budget."

"The manual moisture determination methods employed today by mineral processing plants falls short in providing timely information required for automation control. The costs associated with transporting and handling concentrates still represent a major portion of the overall treatment price. When considering the cash flow of a mining operation, that is governed by both the smelter contract, with moisture penalties and the quantity and quality of the concentrates shipped, an efficient method of on-line moisture content would be a welcome tool.A novel on-line determination system for ore concentrate moisture content would replace the normally tedious classic manual procedure. Since the introduction of microelectronic-based control systems, operators have strived to reduce the treatment costs to the minimum therefore a representative and timely determination of on-line moisture content becomes vital for control set points and timely feedback. Reliable sensors have long been on the “wish list” of mineral processors since the problem has always been that you can only control what you can measure. Today, the task of moisture determination is still done in the classical technique of loss in weight by uncontrolled procedures. These same methods were introduced in the earliest base metal concentrators. Generally, it is acceptable to have ore concentrate moisture content vary within a range of 7 to 9%. Many times, delays in manually achieving reliable feedback on the moisture content results in the moisture varying from 5 to 12% before corrective actions can be made.This paper first reviews the traditional and widely available methods for determining moisture content in granular materials by applying physical principals and properties to measure moisture content. All methods are in some form affected when employed on mineral ore concentrates. This paper describes a unique and promising on-line moisture sensor in two mineral processing applications, which not only automates the tedious tasks but also results in reliable moisture feedback that can be used in the optimization of the de-watering process equipment such as pressure or vacuum filters and fuel-fired driers. Finally, two measurement applications will be presented to indicate the usefulness and to summarize the measurement requirements for the proposed method of employing drag force and mechanical properties of the material itself to determine the moisture content."

"Louvicourt mine began operation in 1994. It is located in northwestern Quebec, 20 km east of Val d’Or. The mine is owned by Aur Resources (30%), which operates the mine, Teck/Cominco (25%) and Novicourt (45%). By the end of 2002 there were approximately 280 employees working on the site, including contractors. Production averages 4300 tons per day, working a massive sulphide body located between 415 m and 920 m underground.Maintenance expenses represent 27% to 29% of the operating costs, and the maintenance personnel represents 34% of the total workforce (including electrical, mechanical and concentrator maintenance staff). Considering these figures, in addition to capital costs and indirect costs, such as energy (electricity, fuel, gas, etc.), it is worthwhile to pay attention to how things are done in order to protect such investment. Every task performed to help understand the impact of Louvicourt’s practices must to be seen as an investment in the reliability of its operation."

"Over the last four years, an international initiative, championed by Vehicle Projects LLC, the Fuelcell Propulsion Institute and Natural Resources Canada, has been active in carrying out research projects to prove out the concept of applying fuel cell technology to underground mining vehicles. These have been carried out by a consortium consisting of mining companies, equipment manufacturers, technology developers, national laboratories and consultants, with the participation of Canadian and U.S. mine regulatory agencies.This clean technology, which produces only water and electricity, would allow several advantages to be obtained, in the health area (by eliminating diesel emissions and reducing noise generation), in lowering production costs (such as reducing ventilation required) and lowering greenhouse gas emissions.This paper outlines the results obtained in several key areas, such as, the operation of fuel cells in underground conditions, risk issues related to underground and surface operation of hydrogen vehicles and hydrogen production and delivery systems, and the design and mining performance of the world’s first hydrogen mining vehicle, a mine production locomotive. The work to date on the fuel cell loader, designing the power plant and power transmission systems, operational requirements, and operating cost reductions is also presented."

"Predicting the effect of wear can lead to improved control strategies that can possibly minimize the risk of catastrophic failure due to wear while maximizing useable life. In the field of geological exploration, diamond drill rod wear illustrates just such a case. Wear conditions vary with geological formations and compositions. The objective of this paper is to determine a general relationship, based in theory and practice, that will approximate drill rod wear and therefore predict remaining drill rod life in the context of Canadian, Australian and South American drilling campaigns. Simulation results allow the definition of simple graphical tools that permit the estimation of the potential drill depth remaining on a given drill rod string. IntroductionWear, in many industrial processes, is an undesired phenomenon for which enormous efforts are made to control, if not eliminate. However, wear, in many other cases, is an intrinsic phenomenon of the given process. In such cases, predicting the effect of wear can lead to improved control strategies that can possibly minimize the risk of catastrophic failure due to wear while maximizing useable life. In the field of geological exploration, diamond drill rod wear illustrates just such a case where abrasive conditions vary with geological formations and compositions.A number of studies have been published on drill rod wear especially with regards to the petroleum industry over the last thirty years (Lewis, 1968; Rollins, 1968; Smith, 1978; White 1978; Rowe and Wilson, 1981; Cheng, 1982; Eustes, 1986; Dudman et al., 1989; Besaisow et al., 1990). Of these, most studies covered management techniques (Rollins, 1968; Smith, 1978; White, 1978; Rowe and Wilson, 1981; Besaisow et al., 1990) and some described case histories (Cheng, 1982; Eustes, 1986; Dudman et al., 1989). However, little (Lewis, 1968) was presented that could aid in predicting wear in the particular case of diamond drilling in the metal mining industry.The objective of this paper is to determine a general relationship, based in theory and practice, that will approximate diamond drill rod wear and therefore predict remaining drill rod life in the context of Canadian, Australian and South American diamond drilling campaigns."

"In December, 1999 Stillwater Mining Company (SMC) commissioned a new paste /cement backfill plant to supplement the existing sand backfill system for the cut and fill mining operation at it’s Nye, Montana mine. The new plant uses the Baker Process Deep Cone TM Paste Thickener to thicken the total concentrator tailings from 30% solids slurry to a 71% solids paste. This paper describes both general paste formation concepts and the evolution of the SMC paste plant operation from original design criteria, through problem solving and plant modifications, to the operation of the existing plant.Although the original process design was not effective for consistently producing and delivering acceptable paste to the stopes for backfill, SMC was able to make the mechanical and process modifications which allow the plant to now produce and deliver an acceptable product to the stopes. Ongoing test work is targeted at increasing the pumping range of the system, increasing the paste solids concentration from the Deep Cone Paste Thickener and reducing the operating and maintenance costs of the system.INTRODUCTIONThe authors would like to thank both Stillwater Mining Company (SMC) and Baker Process for their assistance in the preparation of this paper. "BHP-Billiton’s Minera Escondida Limitada, in Chile, is one of the world’s largest copper producers. It treats a combined 10,500 tph of copper ore through its two concentrators: Los Colorados and Laguna Seca. The performance of the rougher circuit at each concentrator was measured and analysed using the JKTech flotation optimisation methodology. This involved developing a flotation model for each concentrator based on cell operating parameters (for example bubble surface area flux and froth recovery) and feed ore floatability characteristics. The rougher circuit performance was evaluated in terms of traditional measures, such as grade and recovery. The operation was also analysed using the measured cell operating parameters and ore floatability and the effect of these with regard to performance (grade / recovery) was assessed.This paper presents a comparison of the rougher circuit at each concentrator in terms of these parameters. The main differences in rougher circuit performance between the two plants were attributed to differences in feed ore floatability characteristics and froth recovery. The comparison highlighted opportunities where performance improvements could be made. The study also showed the usefulness of separating the flotation process into easily measurable subprocesses to further identify the different mechanisms occurring in each rougher circuit. Traditional measures like grade and recovery are useful for monitoring flotation operation but this data lacks the depth to determine the root cause behind operational issues. Determining the operating parameters and ore floatability provides the operating plant metallurgist better tools to assess and manage these issues."

The Jeffrey mine of the Canadian Johns-Manville Co., Limited, is in the town of Asbestos, situated approximately 100 miles northeast of Montreal and about the same distance southwest of Quebec, in Richmond county, Quebec. Mining operations were started in 1881 on outcrops on a hill, as a side-hill cut, followed by a second and third cut. This development was the forerunner of the present large open-pit operations, the mine now ranking as the largest open-pit asbestos mine in the world. Operations were first carried on by hand, then by horsepower and later by stem cableways. By 1914, the derrick spans, 2,000 feet or more long, became unwieldy. To overcome this, and also to eliminate hand labour as much as possible, steam shovels and railway haulage were introduced. The steam shovels were replaced in 1928 by larger electric shovels of the full-revolving type.

Plant design history has left current operations with a mixture of manual operation and various forms of automated process controls. Consequently, we typically see high variability in the continuous operations together with a shortfall in the attainment of full capacity, or higher utilization of consumables.At a level of best practice, “Operational Performance Excellence” focuses on process control, using automation and control systems to deliver process optimization. This more sophisticated delivery is a great deal more difficult than the first stage of equipment selection / installation. It includes the appropriate selection of the right instrumentation, control system, key process knowledge, individuals with a solid control engineering background/experience, and the essential backing/ support of the operations management team together leading to higher value delivery. Robust solutions can be realized, considerably minimizing process variation, thus leading to process optimization. This approach results in an easier, efficient and safer process while providing considerable returns for the plant owners.How variable are your processes, and do you maintain optimized process performance with dedicated resources, modern instrumentation, ‘best practice’ control systems and performance monitoring tools? "It is a widely held view that in the 21st century, the mining industry will be dominated by a relatively small number of large companies, truly global in scope and internationally staffed (Gooding, 1997). Interestingly enough, most of the exploration and exploitation activities are being carried out by junior and major mining companies from common law jurisdictions in civil law countries, in particular in Latin America, where in recent years, the region has ranked first as a destination for exploration dollars, thanks to the reforms undertaken by some countries to amend their legal framework to attract foreign investment. From a lawyer’s point of view, this is where the main challenge lies: how to bridge the gap between the two legal systems.In order to avoid pitfalls, common law lawyers should be more diligent and proactive when dealing with civil law jurisdictions, given the different systems of law, standards, traditions and customs. Common law lawyers cannot be expected to be well-versed in civil law but they should not be completely unfamiliar with it either. A balance should be struck to ensure clients’ needs are professionally taken care of and that common law requirements and standards are met."

"Comparable transaction analysis is the best known of the market approaches to valuation of exploration-stage mineral properties. The analysis of option and farm-in agreements can also provide useful guidance to valuators. While such approaches can be distorted by incomplete analysis, market-based methods are capable of providing consistent, credible results when carried out carefully with due consideration paid to all factors which buyers and sellers consider when dealing in the real market. IntroductionMineral properties without defined resources present one of the most challenging tasks to the mineral valuator. This paper will concentrate on market-based approaches to valuation of such properties. Other authors at MM2000 presented papers on cost and income approaches. Sorentino (2000) also provides a useful overview with some provacative commentary on methods.Market based-approaches are based on the principle of substitution and include such techniques as: comparable transaction analysis (sometimes referred to as sales comparison analysis); farm-in commitment (or option agreement) analysis; rules-of-thumb; and comparable market value analysis.Are there any valuation standards available to assist the valuator? In Canada there are none that apply to the valuation of mineral assets or securities. This problem is being addressed, at least in part, by the CIMVal Committee of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM)1. Further, the recently established Canadian Association of Mineral Valuators will be giving consideration to the adoption of valuation standards."

"This paper describes the use of dynamic scheduling and discrete event control to provide coordinated control of multiple automated vehicles. This work has been carried out within ongoing research into multi-robot coordination developed around the underground mining scenario. Demonstrations using scaled laboratory models of underground mines illustrate the potential for this technology for full-scale implementation for mine-wide automation. IntroductionIn the past decade, the mining industry has been improving the efficiency of underground mining operations. Robotics and automation have demonstrated the potential to further reduce costs. Tele-operation of underground vehicles from above ground and autonomous navigation have reduced travel delays and allowed for single operator control of multiple vehicles (Bloomquist and Hinton, 2001). Other recent projects include the automation of the digging process as well as the drilling and blasting operations. Infrastructureless guidance systems are also being developed (Bloomquist and Hinton, 2001).Mine-wide automation requires significant developments at two levels: (1) the development of mining robots capable of performing tasks either autonomously or semiautonomously; and (2) the development of methods for automating operations at a systems level. This paper focusses on the latter, and describes a general framework for the coordination of multiple mobile robots in an unstructured or semi-structured environment."
