Graphite is soft and easily floatable but it is quite difficult to obtain high purity concentrate at coarse sizes. Chemical treatment can produce high grade concentrate but it is an expensive process. Graphite containing plus 96% fixed carbon (FC) with coarse flakes commands high price in international market. Such graphite concentrate containing plus 96% FC was produced in Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) by using newly developed reagent (mixture of different hydrocarbons and terpenes, IBM/D7) instead of commonly used frothers viz. pine oil, MIBC, kerosine etc. and regrinding in a special type of mill with special grinding media instead of grinding in a conventional ball/ rod mill followed by cleaning. Both the new reagent (frother) and special grinding media are inexpensive and readily available. The process is under patenting. This paper focuses application of this new grinding methodology for flake size protection, and the new reagent for selective flotation of high purity graphite.

Production evaluations were conducted at Daisy Gold Mine (Glamis Gold, formerly Rayrock), between August, 1997 and August, 1998 to quantify the effect of 3M fluorochemical surfactants (fluorosurfactants) on extraction kinetics and gold recovery in gold heap leach mining operations. Ore was treated at a level of 7-10 grams surfactant per ton of ore using 3M Pluorad TM Leach Mining Additive PC-GOLD. Kinetics and gold recovery were determined by solution assay for each of the tests. Both tests indicated improved kinetics, and data from Test 2 was used for determination of a quantitative increase in gold recovery resulting from PC-GOLD addition. A discussion of test results including methods used to determine gold recovery is provided.

By using the data of E.A. Hersam and F.C. Bond's equation for energy consumption in comminution, a method was developed to analyze the performance of industrial jaw crushers. The study showed that industrial jaw crushers are generally operated below capacity. The study also showed that industrial jaw crushers generally have sufficient installed power to operate at, full capacity. The method presented can be used to estimate the capacities and power requirements of jaw crushers.

Energy and the conversion of potential energy into alternate forms is becoming a topic of household conversation for a larger segment of the world's population as mankind's desire for products derived from the vast array of technological developments continues to expand. The world's use of steel and the high energy consumption related to the production of steel promotes an awareness of the limitations of existing technology and a search for more economical alternates. Terminology such as (BF) Blast Furnace, (BOP) Basic Oxygen Furnace, (EAF) Electric ARC Furnace, (DR) Direct Reduction, (DRI) Direct Reduced Iron and (FC) form coke is becoming commonplace as alternates are being sought to alleviate the energy crunch. Coke production by various methods was developed as early as the seventeenth century in Europe to replace the disappearing hardwood forests that supplied the initial blast furnace fuel in the form of charcoal. In 1880, the Semet Solvay by-product coke oven design was introduced to the United States at Syracuse, New York, to supply coke for use in the production of soda ash, coke oven gas and its by products as the primary source of many organic processes. Although the Semet Solvay coke oven has not been marketed for decades, these coke oven batteries are in use today producing metallurgical coke, coke oven gas, and related by-products.

A computerized system (SCAPEVIEWER) based on landscape indices and artificial intelligence techniques is proposed in order to classify landscape images into various categories according to the quality of the pictured scenery. Photographs (totally 108) from various landscapes have been clustered, from seven experts in accordance to the mean estimation of landscape quality, into distinctive (C1), typical or common (C2), and indistinctive (C3). For each of the landscape photographs, ten (10) environmental and operational indices have been selected and determined, corresponding to visibility (V), naturalness (N), relief (R), flora quantity (FC), flora quality (F), water (W), skyline (SL), visual entities (G), season (S), and viewer position (P). These landscape indices are fed to a classifier. The classifier is a feed forward Neural Network (NN) trained by a novel hybrid method combining genetic algorithms and the back-propagation algorithm with adaptive learning rate and momentum. A total classification rate of 93.5% has been achieved, using only 8 input neurons. The discarded input neurons correspond to the indices S, and P. The pilot system SCAPEVIEVER has shown the feasibility of landscape photograph classification into three categories (C1, C2, and C3) according to the landscape quality, selecting simultaneously the most robust indices, by means of a computerized system combining the knowledge of an expert with a NN based classifier.

Computer-based mine management systems are being used in many surface mines to assign haul trucks, track equipment and manage information. Advances in digital communications allow these systems to be used in underground operations. Underground mine management systems help maximize production by providing gains in equipment and manpower use, drawpoint equalization in block caving operations, preventive maintenance and safety. Current systems use allocated or "locked" train and load-haul-dump (LHD) dispatching. Allocated dispatching rarely optimizes open pit product' on. But it offers an efficient mode of operation underground and where options are more limited. The primary objectives of underground mine management systems are to maximize production and mini¬mize contention time through allocated train, truck or LHD dispatching, traffic control, equipment monitoring and comprehensive reporting. The main components of an underground mine management system include: ? A central computer (personal computer or worksta¬tion) in a central control center. It sends instructions to train, truck or LHD drivers and allows dispatcher interaction. ? A field computer system (FCS). This consists of a touch-screen graphics console (GC) and mobile hub - on each train, truck or LHD to receive and display instructions from the central computer and accept driver input. ? A data radio network based on leaky feeder (data, voice, video) or microcell radios (data only) and advanced token-ring technology. This passes information between the central computer and the FCSs. ? Radio frequency (RF) tags mounted at boxes, weigh bridges, tips and rim tunnel main haulage ways to locate trains or LHDs (Luke, 1993). Such a management system must be in place before implementing computer-based dispatching (Vagenas, 1991) for production optimization.

The depletion of good-quality phosphate resources, coupled by a need to supply acceptable products at a rapid rate, while meeting the specifications of fertilizer chemical plants, is of significant concern to the phosphate industry, particularly the production of concentrates with tolerable dolomite content. Tremendous efforts have been made in the past to develop an efficient and economical process that can effectively reject dolomite. However, dolomite removal continues to plague the phosphate industry due to several process-specific challenges being encountered with various beneficiation technologies. In this regard, detailed characterization of phosphate reserves is crucial to understand textural limitations and help design appropriate strategies to achieve quality products. In this paper, the development of procedures to establish dolomite rejection/francolite recovery curves for gravity preconcentration of pebble phosphate from Central Florida is described using high-speed X-ray computed tomography (HSXCT). The developed procedure is illustrated with the analysis of high MgO pebble phosphate samples (10.39 mm × 1 mm) received from South Pasture and Four Corners locations operated by the Mosaic company. The rejection/recovery curves were calculated for each sample for five different particle size classes to observe the trend in rejection/recovery with variation in particle size. In order to evaluate the reliability of the HSXCT data, analysis using the high-resolution X-ray computed tomography (HRXCT) technique was performed on one particular sample (FC-3-1). Finally, to assess the separation efficiency, the HSXCT and HRXCT rejection/recovery curves obtained were compared to experimental gravity preconcentration results reported in the literature. In this way, liberation limitations for gravity preconcentration in the processing of pebble phosphate have been established based on X-ray computed tomography analysis.

Introduction The theoretical analysis of tumbling mill energetics and performance has largely neglected mill dimensionality, and, in particular, the importance of the length/diameter (L/D) ratio. This is in spite of the fact that practice varies substantially: geographically, for semi-autogenous and autogenous mills, as between North America and South Africa/Scandinavia, and historically, for overflow ball mills, for which the L/D ratio has increased significantly from the earliest small mills to the largest mills currently. The present study is concerned primarily with the influence of the L/D ratio on the design and operation of overflow ball mills, on the occurrence of the overload phenomenon, and on the limits, if any, it may impose on mill capacities because of critical pulp axial velocity limits. It will be shown that the shape factor is of major importance in this area and that its adjustment to the extent that this is practical should remove the diameter limitations previously postulated for this mill type. Dimensionality in mill design Ball mill shape factors in the period prior to 1927 (Taggart, 1927) averaged 1.1/1 for 29 center discharge mills and 1.0/1 for 30 peripheral discharge mills. With the resumption of new plant construction after the 1930s depression, the Morenci concentrator continued the 1/1 ratio with its 3.1 x 3.1 m (10 x 10 ft) mills. The ratio was increased progressively from then on, reaching 1.6 and 1.8/1 for the largest overflow mills currently. As shown recently (Arbiter, 1989), this is in sharp contrast to autogenous and SAG mill shapes, for which the ratio averages 0.4 in North America. On the other hand, South African practice, starting at the turn of the century with autogenous mills having 4/1 ratios, moved toward 1/1 until recently, when a 2.5/ 1 ratio mill was installed. The reasons given for such divergent practice for mill shape factors are in some respects contradictory and generally inconclusive. The most complete discussion from a practical viewpoint (Dor and Bassarear, 1982) is limited to primary SAG and autogenous mills. Considerations of ball mill dimensionality have had a twofold direction. On the one hand, it has been argued that ball mill efficiencies should increase with increasing diameter and that the specific energy for a particular grind should be reduced accordingly. An inadvertent test of this idea at the Bougainville operation (Burns and Erskine, 1983) resulted in drastic underpowering, which led to failure to reach design capacity until additional mills were installed. This can be taken as strong evidence against any increase in efficiency with diameter. In another direction, it has been argued (Arbiter and Harris, 1982, 1983) that there is a limit to ball mill diameters because of the demonstrable limit to axial flow velocities evident in the overload phenomenon, which as a fact is incontrovertible. But that it places a limit on mill diameters overlooks the evidence given below that appropriate variation in the L/D ratio will permit major increases in diameter, limited only by constructional or economic factors. The present study was directed toward quantifying the overload phenomenon through examination of the influence of mill dimensionality variation and mill operating variables on its occurrence. It is shown that varying the operating conditions, specifically the load fraction and the fraction critical speed, can reduce the risk of overload for existing operations; while appropriate decreases in the L/D ratio can minimize the risk in the design of new circuits. Ball mill overload Ball mill overload is a consequence of the approach to a critical velocity with increasing feed rates or circulating loads. Although the effect has been known for over 50 years, there have been no previous attempts to quantify it. The following description of the ball mill as a flow system is the preliminary to a quantitative analysis: 1) In the absence of a ball load, axial flow of pulp through a mill resembles open channel flow, except for disturbances near the shell due to shell/lifter rotation. 2) For a given ball load (Lf), the void fraction available for pulp hold-up (H) for the ascending portion of the load is approximately 0.4 Lf. In the descending portion, it is greater than this and increases with fraction critical speed (Fc) because of load expansion. 3) Increasing the feed rate increases pulp hold-up and progressively fills the available void space. At a critical flow rate, which depends on system geometry, hydraulic head and pulp rheology, void filling reaches its limit; a pool forms rapidly and fills available space outside the ball load and up to the overflow level. Prior to this, pulp discharges mainly along the ascending rim of the overflow. 4) For a small mill (Lo et al., 1990), it has been shown that with increasing feed rates the critical filling is at or near 50% of the mill volume. Power drops rapidly when this level is reached, as required by the torque formula. 5) The transition to overload is associated with the following phenomena: a) The decrease in power draw. b) Damping of mill sound. c) Reduced comminution of coarser feed sizes, probably due to reduced direct impact in the presence of a pool. d) Increased circulating loads, which further intensify the overload, and increased density of cyclone underflows, which can lead to roping. e) Conditions beyond overload are not known because feed rates are not delibelrately increased beyond this point. f) The existence of the phenomenon limits the capacity of a mill with a fixed set of operating conditions and can prevent the balancing of hard ore feed rate decreases by increases in soft ore rates.

This biography is the story of his lifetime of study, work experiences, experimentation, analyses and findings. His numerous published writings are reviewed. His legacy is one of comminution process engineering that will be used in perpetuity.

In the first half of the year, lessening of cold war tensions was welcome. But Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in the second half led to the Persian Gulf War in January and February 1991. This caused an oil shock that dampened the economy. So the US gross national product rose only 0.9% to $5,463 billion (US billion = 109). The buildup of military forces in the Persian Gulf area focused greater attention not only on petroleum but also on other strategic materials. The Department of Defense continued to review stockpile goals and to upgrade several mineral materials. In addition, the Bureau of Mines continued to maintain the standby Emergency Minerals Administration. The Defense Production Act, which authorizes priorities, alloca¬tions and supply expansion, lapsed on Oct. 20. So the Selective Service Act of 1967 became the authority for assuring that orders of the armed forces and defense atomic-energy programs were given priority treatment. Consumer demand strongly affects mining worldwide. US citizens carry significant debt, and large stocks of housing and consumer goods are already in place. Some 250 million persons have 188 million licensed motor vehicles and 100 million dwelling units. Consequently, new car production fell 11 %, to 6.1 million units. Truck and bus production fell 8%, to 3.7 million units and new private housing starts fell 13% to 1.2 million units.

The year 1988 unexpectedly turned out to be a good year for the US coal industry. In fact, it was a third consecutive year of record coal production. Accord¬ing to preliminary Energy Information Administration data for 1988, domestic coal consumption went up 5%, or 41 Mt (45 million st), from 1987. Coal exports were up by a surprising 13.6 Mt (15 million st). In 1988, 22.7 Mt (25 million st) of coal were drawn from stockpiles for consumption. Even so, US coal production increased to 862 Mt (950 million st). That was up 28 Mt (31 million st) from 1987. While coal consumption, exports, and production were up, delivered prices for steam coal continued to slide during the year. Metallurgical coal prices, however, firmed up and showed a moderate increase. This reflected tight metallurgical coal markets at home and abroad. Coal consumption US coal consumption reached 800 Mt (882 million st), compared with 759 Mt (837 million st) in 1987. Increased metallurgical coal consumption was one factor. Most of the rise in coal consumption, however, was due to unexpectedly high electricity demand. Unseasonably hot summer weather al lowed added coal-fired electric generation to supplement the drought-related reduction in hydro-electric power supply. Electric utilities consumed 687 Mt (757 million st) of coal in 1988, 35.4 Mt (39 million st) more than in 1987. Coal-fired power plants remained the primary source of US electricity generation, providing 57% of the total in 1988. Coal consumption at coke plants increased 13%, to 38 Mt (42 million st), from the level consumed in 1987. This increase reflects the recent recovery in the iron and steel industry. Metallurgical coal consumption in 1988 could have been greater. But US coke plants reportedly reached their maximum practical production capacity. As a result, net US coke imports amounted to 1.45 Mt (1.6 million st). Despite increased industrial activities, steam coal consumption by industrial plants was up only slightly from the 1987 level, amounting to 69 Mt (76 million st) in 1988. Residential and commercial coal consumption remained virtually unchanged at 6.4 Mt (7 million st). Coal exports and imports US coal exports rebounded in 1988, reaching 86 Mt (95 million st). It was the highest level of annual US coal exports since 1982, when they reached 96 Mt (106 million st). An unusual set of factors led to an opening for US coal exporters in 1988: • a high level of industrial production in Japan and the European Economic Community, • supply disruptions due to labor problems at coal mines in Poland and Australia, • a drought-related reduction in hydro-electric power generation in Canada, requiring increased coal-fired generation, • China's problems in meeting its export commitments, and • a fall in the value of the US dollar. US metallurgical coal exports in 1988 amounted to 56 Mt (62 million st), 9.1 Mt (10 million st) more than the 1987 level. Europe, Japan, and Canada were the principal importers of US metallurgical coal in 1988. European countries, in particu¬lar, increased their take by one-third of US metallurgical coal. The labor problems in Poland and Australia contributed to these higher levels of imports. So did increases in pig iron production of 8% in Japan and 9% in the European Economic Community. US steam coal exports - including bituminous, anthracite, and lignite-increase to 30 Mt (33 million st). This was up from 25.4 Mt (28 million st) in 1987 Contributing to this overall rise were 1.8-Mt (2-million st) increase in shipments to Canada and a 2.7-Mt (3-million st) increase to Europe. Unaffected by the somewhat tighter world coal market, US coal imports showed a slight increase to 1.8 Mt (million st) in 1988. Colombia continue to be the leading exporter to the United States, followed by Canada and Venezuela. Venezuela's entry into the US market is a relatively recent one, having made its first significant shipment in the fourth quarter of 1987.

Through the development of innovative in-line mineral quantification sensors, the possibility has arisen to apply modern control theory to implement automatic process control for electrostatic high tension (“HT”) roll separators. A pilot-scale set-up was constructed to enable continuous tests to be carried out. A typical dry mill feed was continuously pre-heated and separated with a modern lab scale HT roll machine. The mineralogy as well as mass-flow of the non-conductor stream was quantified in-line, and the combined streams were re-circulated in an endless loop by a combination of vibration feeders and a bucket elevator. A fractional factorial experiment was executed to determine the most significant control parameters of the HT roll separator. Then a multi-input, multi-output dynamic model of the HT electrostatic separator was extracted by the application of standard system identification techniques for automatic control. The most important control variable to ensure a stable product grade could be identified. This allowed a robust single-input, single-output controller to be implemented. The process variable and set-point was mineral grade and the control variable was electrode voltage. Roll speed was manually adjusted while the mineral grade was kept on set-point by the control system. The roll speed, where maximum mass flow and therefore maximum yield was produced on-grade, could therefore be rapidly determined. Atmosphere humidity and ore temperature served as disturbances. Some other adjustable parameters were kept constant during the experiments, namely feed mineralogy, splitter settings and feed rate. Delivery of maximum yield, with a controlled grade, can improve production while reducing the burden of complex manual tuning. Manual tuning previously involved coping with multiple parameters with uncertain cross coupling influences on the end result. Even the end result was typically only known after completion of mineral assays. Automatic grade stabilisation and yield optimisation for a HT roll separator bank requires in-line measurement of mineralogy and mass flow, as well as the implementation of a robust process control system.

The US economy continued to grow steadily in 1988, reaching an annual rate of $5 trillion in the last quarter (US trillion = 1012). The value of domestically processed mineral-based materi¬als rose 20% to $300 billion (US billion 109). The value of metals produced from US ores rose 40% to more than $10 billion, industrial minerals rose 6%' to $20 billion, and recycled scrap more than doubled to $10 billion. Increasing economic activity stimulated metal prices. Yearly lows and highs were 95 cents and $1.68 for copper, 52 cents, and $1.30 for aluminum, 34 cents and 42 cents for lead, and 43 cents and 75 cents for zinc. A number of mining and metal companies experienced significantly increased profitability. Consumer demand strongly affects mining because the US economy is relatively saturated with long-lived products. Consumer, mortgage, and Federal debt continued to rise. About 246 million US citizens already possess 170 million licensed motor vehicles and 100 million dwelling units. New car production remained at the 1987 level of 7.1 million units. Truck and bus production, however, rose 7% to 4.1 million units. New housing starts fell 7% to 1.5 million units. Imports supplied a significant proportion of total US consumption of several important mineral materials. By year-end, imports of crude and refined petroleum exceeded domestic crude oil production. Such imports cost $42 billion. Imports of nonfuel mineral-based materials were valued at $44 billion and exports at $35 billion. The US and Canada-the world's two largest trading partners-consummated a historic free trade agreement. In February, President Reagan transferred responsibility for stockpiling strategic and critical materials to the Secretary of Defense. And, in July, the GSA group that bought, stored, rotated, and sold stockpiled materials was transferred to the Defense Department's Defense Logistics Agency. Concern about apartheid in South Africa continued, resulting in increasing attention to chromium, manganese, platinum-group metals, cobalt, vanadium, and gold. The Defense Production Act, authorizing priorities and allocations, supply expansions, voluntary agreements, and the National Defense Executive Reserve, was amended to include provisions for averting harm to national security from foreign takeovers. The DPAct, in effect through September 1989, is now up for further extension. Under the Act, the US Bureau of Mines maintains the Emergency Minerals Administration. During the year, consultations were held with Canada to strengthen the North American Defense Industrial Base. Coal production, 60% from open pits, rose 5% to 870 Mt (960 million st). Nearly four-fifths was burned to generate 57% of US electricity. Exports included 56 Mt (62 million st) of metallur- gical coal and 29 Mt (32 million st) of steam coal, with a total value of $4 billion. Domestic petroleum produc¬tion fell 2% to 574 hm3 (3.6 billion bbl). Uranium mining, including recovery from phosphates, was unchanged at 5.9 kt (6500 st). Nonfuel minerals Major metals Raw steel production-a major con¬sumer of many minerals-rose 14% to 92 Mt (102 million st). Domestic iron ore production rose 25% to 59 Mt (65 million st), about 96% pelletized. Net imports rose 37% to 16 Mt (18 million st). Raw steelmaking capacity of 102 Mt (112 million st) was unchanged. Voluntary Restraint Agreements with 21 steel exporting nations limited im¬port penetration to about 20% of the domestic market. Using mines in Canada, Boart Longyear, a leading provider of drilling services and products, has put its Stage 3 Coring Bit to the test and each time the bit has passed the test with great success. After more than a year in the field at a major mine operation in Sudbury, Canada, the Stage3 coring bit broke life records to become recognized as the most productive design in the industry. In addition to the proven advantage seen in regular bit life increases of as much as 300 percent in some cases, the design is quickly being recognized for its cost-saving operational impact. In Sudbury, the mine operation realized actual cash savings of more than C$45,000 within an eight-month period by making the switch to Stage3 bits. For years, the Sudbury Basin team has relied on the Alpha Extended Crown bit with the Express Waterway geometry option, ordering approximately 500 units per year. This 07 COM ECEX configuration performed well in medium-hard, non-abrasive to ultra-hard, non-abrasive formations with an average bit life of 150 m (490 ft). While satisfied with the performance of the Alpha Ex-tended Crown, the team agreed to put the new Alpha Stage3 to the test. Boart Longyear?s field engineers supplied five drill sites with Alpha Stage3 bits in a 07 COM configuration. After thoroughly testing the Stage3, the results were clear. Even with the well-known performance and versatility offered by the previously preferred configuration, the Stage3 set a new standard of bit performance. The new bit maintained its cutting edge for up to three times longer than the Alpha Extended Crown, a significant performance increase when compared to the 07 COM ECEX.

Mongolia is known in western countries as the location of rich dinosaur fossil fields. However, the country is even richer in mineral resources. The Ministry of Industry and Trade reports 6,000 mineral occurrences of 80 metals and minerals. Mongolia has already attracted much foreign investment in the mining sector. Mining is the country’s largest industry. It is responsible for 17 percent of the gross domestic product, 65 percent of industrial output and 57 percent of export earnings.

Enhanced gravity separators (EGS) provide a more efficient separation than froth flotation when cleaning coal in the 150 x 25 µm particle size range. To improve the performance of an EGS unit, air bubbles were injected into the feed stream in an attempt to decrease the apparent density of the coal particles due to the formation of bubble-coal particle agglomerates. Air injection had a significant impact on operating characteristics and separation performance. Coal recovery was increased by 10 to 20 absolute percentage points while a 2 percentage point drop in the minimum product ash content was also achieved.

Solid-bowl (decanter) centrifuges are used extensively to dewater slurries in a wide range of industries. However, the application of decanters as classification devices is not as common. In this study, the performance of a continuous, pilot-scale, solid-bowl centrifuge was evaluated when classifying an ultrafine coal slurry containing nearly 60% material less than 10µm. The current study examined the effects of operating conditions on centrifuge performance. The test conditions included centrifuge bowl and scroll speeds, volumetric feed rates, solids concentration, and pond depth. Centrifuge performance was evaluated using partition curves, along with product yields and solids concentrations.

This first of two articles on the Second Mexican Mining Rail Excursion describes some of the more casual experiences participants enjoyed on last fall’s rail tour of major Mexican mining operations. Were the legislators and politicians responsible for the closing of the U.S. Department of the Interior?s Bureau of Mines (Bureau) in March 1996 fully aware of what they were doing? Throughout the United States? history, the domestic mining and minerals industry has been largely responsible for the nation?s growth and prosperity that had made it a world leader. The mining and minerals industry made it possible for the young nation to catch up with Europe during the Industrial Revolution, played an essential role leading to victories in World Wars I and II and was a core ingredient for continued economic growth. For a number of decades, America?s import dependency on non-fuel mineral materials has continued to increase. (USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries). Developing domestic resources to meet current and future demands ? particularly those resources considered to be of strategic and critical value to national security ? is necessary. Federal involvement is required since many of these resources are located on public lands. Another reason for federal involvement is that the success of the industry depends on long-range research programs and advances that may take up to 25 years to become commercially available. This situation requires federal partnership to coordinate the programs necessary to collectively involve the industry, individual mining companies and colleges and universities. So, how was it possible to close a federal agency that had contributed so much to the nation?s welfare in a mandated 90-day period, with more than 1,200 employees losing their jobs?

The Ore Body Modeling and Mine Planning Worshop, sponsored by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Inc.
