All types of commercial phosphate rock produced throughout the world contain fluorine in quantities ranging from approximately 0.4 to 1.3 per cent in the Curacao and Christmas Island phosphates to 3.1 to 4.2 per cent in the phosphates of the United States and North Africa1. For a given type of rock, the fluorine content is usually roughly proportional to the phosphorus content. Significance of Fluorine in Phosphate Rock On the basis of chemical and X-ray diffraction studies, Hendricks and co-workers2 concluded that fluorapatite, Cal10F2(PO4)6, is the essential phosphatic constituent of the commercial types of domestic phosphate rock. On the other hand, Bredig and co-workers3 have recently advanced the opinion, also based on X-ray diffraction studies, that the mineral phosphates usually contain carbon dioxide in the apatite lattice, and that the phosphate rocks of the United States are really fluorcarbonate apatites. However, the domestic types of phosphate rock do not seem to differ greatly from coarsely crystalline fluorapatite in their behavior toward chemical reagents in general, and for the purpose of this paper it will suffice to consider fluorapatite as being the essential phosphatic constituent of these types of rock. The available data1 indicate that the different commercial types of domestic phosphate rock usually contain about 12 to 52 per cent more fluorine than theoretically is required to form fluorapatite with all the phosphorus. Calcium fluoride (fluorite) has been definitely identified in only a very few of the samples that have been examined1,2. Bredig and co-workers4 state that fluorapatite can take into its crystal lattice excess calcium fluoride to the extent of approximately 70 per cent of that theoretically required by the formula Ca10F²(PO4)6 without causing more

Separation of minerals by froth flotation is rightly called an art. It can truthfully be said that no two ores separate in the same way. The difference in results obtained when natural and synthetic mixtures of minerals are separated is so great that such tests frequently have been worthless in attempting to select conditions in which a natural mixture will separate. With a few rare exceptions, the natural mixture is much more difficult to treat than a synthetic mixture, and a much poorer separation is obtained. Perhaps several experimenters have wondered why 10 or 20 per cent of a mineral being floated from an ore does not float and is different from the 90 or 80 per cent that is recovered. In experimental tests on pure sphalerite, observers' have noted that varying amounts of sphalerite may be froth-floated with pine oil alone, the amount recovered in the froth depending apparently upon the source of the sulphide. The only explanation of results such as these, barring insufficiency of frother or time of flotation, is that the surface of the mineral floated is different from that of the mineral depressed. This difference often has been found to be caused by natural contamination of mineral surfaces, apparently brought about by weathering and exposure to natural solutions. There is virtually no rock that is absolutely unweathered. One of the writers had an exceedingly instructive experience in 1931 while working with United Verde copper-zinc iron sulphide ore in Arizona. Nonselective flotation of chalcopyrite and sphalerite away from some of the pyrite was all that could be accomplished. All known depressants produced only slight effect. Some mixtures of sulphide and oxide ores from the Tintic district in Utah are of a sufficiently good grade to be shipped to the smelter without beneficiation. In mining this type of ore, however, a material tonnage of ore of a similar composition but of lower grade is obtained. It is a question of economics whether such ore should be shipped with a certainty of a small return or concentrated if that would yield a sufficiently increased return to amortize plant construction and upkeep and yield a higher rate of profit than at present. It may be assumed that the tonnage of this borderline ore is constantly increasing and that eventually it will attain such proportions as to justify plans for milling on a relatively large scale. Under existing conditions, the producer of mixed sulphide and oxide ores is not greatly concerned about the physical characteristics of his ore or of its mineralogical complexities, since his contract with the smelter calls for payment on the basis of chemical analysis. When concentration is contemplated an entirely different picture is presented. Percentages of valuable metal content must then be con-sidered in terms of minerals, for it is in the form of minerals that recoveries are made and losses sustained. In describing the performance of a given flotation mill and reagent combination, it may be stated as a generality that a specific percentage recovery of valuable elements is made. Technically, however, the concentrator is really constructed and the reagents are selected to recover the valuable minerals. These considerations must be given prominence in discussing borderline ores from the Tintic district because of their physical characteristics and mineralogical composition. Because of these peculiarities they may be justly termed complex, since their lead, silver, and copper contents are each represented by two or more minerals of different chemical composition and presenting widely divergent physical properties. The experimental work herein described is presented in support of the following broad hypothesis: Conditioning of metals and metallic sulphides by amine collectors involves metathetic reaction at the solid surface between the collector and an oxidized metallic compound, to produce a coating comprising an amine-bearing compound of low solubility in the system. The type of reaction is different in acid and in basic solutions; both types may occur simultaneously in near-neutral pulps. Experimental The experiments comprise contact-angle tests with a variety of metals and metallic sulphides and extraction teats on ground chalcocite. Contact-angle tests were made principally on metals. Covellite paralleled metallic copper in amine solution at pH 8.8 (Table 3) and in alkaline water, but maintained an angle of about 70° in Io-3 HCl solution, where metallic copper lost its angle. The tests with anionic collectors (Table I) indicate that the behavior of metals in general is parallel to that of their minerals in anionic solutions. It is believed that this is generally true with cationic collectors also, but the covellite test is a warning against a broad assumption to this effect. All test specimens were mounted in Transoptic.* All tests in conditioning solution were preceded by a test in distilled water; cleaning and polishing were continued in every case until the angle in water was zero. Subsequent transfers into and out of solutions and test cells were made in such a way as to prevent exposure of the surface to air.1 The amine used was primary laurylamine, Armour and Co., AM-1120. It was used in the form of the hydrochloride, obtained by precipitation with gaseous hydrochloric acid from an ether solution of the amine, and purified by two recrystallizations from ether-alcoho1.2 Inorganic and other test reagents were standard laboratory grades. Temperatures were not controlled; the probable range of test-solution temperatures is 650 to 80°F.

The: structure of anodic films formed on aluminum and other metals under varied conditions is not well known despite the wide use of such films both as protective coatings and as the dielectric medium in electrolytic condensers. The present work was undertaken as a survey of the possibilities of electron diffraction in the investigation of anodic films, especially in comparing the properties of anodic films formed under different sets of conditions and subjected to various subsequent treatments. In addition, an effort has been made to compare surface films formed on aluminum by anodic treatment with surface films formed by heating, immersion in chemicals, etc. The elcctron diffraction method in many cases has been successfully applied to the study of thin surface films. Its principal advantage is that it can be used without removing the films from the base material upon which they have been formed. The low penetrating power of electrons, in the "reflection" diffraction method which has been used in this work, prevents the appearance of diffraction patterns from substances at depths greater than about 100 Angstrom units (lop6 cm.). Different investigations of the structure of anodic films have showll widely varying results, depending on the methods used in preparing the films. Apparently under some conditions these films are crystalline and under other conditions they are amorphous, and it has been difficult to say which type of structure will be found in any particular case. Schmid and Wassermann's1 X-ray diffraction patterns of eloxal‡ films show two broad, diffuse bands, which these investigators attribute to finely divided cubic y-Al2O3.§ Burgers, Claassen, and Zernicke³ obtained sharp X-ray

It is generally recognized that fluid is lost from rotary drilling muds to permeable strata during normal drilling operations;1,2-3 but that this fluid is the filtrate from the mud, rather than the mud itself, has been shown by various workers.1,4,5 The presence of this filtrate in oil-bearing or gas-bearing strata is undesirable and harmful. The decreased permeability of the stratum to oil effected by the presence of water has been pointed out by several investigators,6,7 and since, in the production of the reservoir fluid, the greatest pressure drop occurs immediately adjacent to the borehole, it follows that infiltered water is particularly objectionable in this region. Again, this filtrate tends to make electrical logs less reliable, since oil in the proximity of the borehole is probably flushed out to an appreciable extent by the water.8 Observation of side wall cores may be misleading for the same reason. Drill-stem tests in low-pressure areas may be of doubtful value where no oil is recovered, unless sufficient time is allowed for production of water lost from the mud. The infiltered water may hinder drilling operations by softening shales and causing sloughing; the ['tight hole" occasioned by excessive deposition of filter cake in the hole is a common occurrence. The filter cake remaining on the face of the producing formation may itself sometimes be detrimental to production.9 In view of these implications of the importance of filtration of mud, an investigation was undertaken to determine the factors involved in the infiltration process, and to correlate these in such a manner that the values obtained in routine filter tests employing a conventional filter of the "wall-building tester" type,10 together with data on size of hole, drill pipe, and rate of mud circulation, could be used to estimate water loss and distance of penetration of the filtrate into strata. Quantitative relations of filter-cake permeability, filtrate viscosity, and rate of filtration have been developed for filtration in the simple laboratory filter.4a,11,12,13 It is obvious, however, that the conditions

THe internal friction of metals has been studied frequently at elevated temperatures.1-4 In most cases it rises rapidly with increasing temperature. The notable exceptions are ferromagnetic materials, and lead.2 This paper describes an investigation of the general features of the high-temperature internal friction of 70-30 alpha brass. Experimental Method The internal friction of a metal is a measure of the rate at which it dissipates energy of vibration. The measure adopted here, I/Q, is (I/2p) times the specific damping capacity, a measure commonly used by engineers. In the measurements of this investigation, the stress level was kept so low that the observations were independent of the stress, The general method of making such measurements, and of observing temperature of a specimen during a measurement, has been described.5.6 The driver and detector coils were wound with wire insulated with glass thread, in order to withstand the high temperatures used. In previous work electrical eddy currents in the specimen served as the coupling between the mechanical vibration of the specimen and the electrical circuits of the driver and detector. The high values of the internal friction in the present investigation rendered this coupling insufficient. In order to increase this coupling, pole pieces cut from ordinary telephone diaphragms were attached to the specimen. A mixture of French chalk and water glass proved a satisfactory cement. All measurements were made at the fundamental frequency for transverse vibration, which lay between 600 and goo cycles per second. Specimens The measurements described herein were made upon a single cylindrical rod of brass, kindly furnished by Dr. Cyril Stanley Smith, of the American Brass Co. This rod was the specimen E of the set of alpha-brass rods described in an earlier paper.6 Successively larger grain sizes were obtained by annealing at .successively higher temperatures. A slice was cut off one end after each set of measurements. Grain counts were made on each slice by W. E. Lindlief, of the American Brass Co. Nine fields were viewed on each piece, located as shown in Fig. I. Results are given in Table I. The grain size is defined in the usual way; namely, Grain size = I/n1/2 where n is the mean number of grains per square millimeter. In presenting this brief historical perspective, it is not my purpose to address myself to the geophysicists, to most of whom the story is already well known. My objective is to draw the attention of those who hold the belief that geophysics is something new, typically twentieth century, to the fact that fundamentally, whether it was known by the name of geophysics or not, the science is an ancient and an honorable one. It began many centuries ago, and our modern civilization and its commerce owe a great debt to its founders, who today are likely to be overlooked and their names forgotten. The word "geophysics" means the physics of the earth, and is descriptive of a science that in many ways bears the same relationship to geology that astrophysics does to astronomy. When dealing with distant stars or deeply buried rocks, the experimenter cannot reach them to obtain samples, which can be taken to his laboratory for study. He therefore exhibits the resourcefulness of Mahomet in the mountain episode, and makes the terrestrial globe or the cosmic universe his laboratory, studying the effects of distant bodies on certain "fields of force" which come to him across interstellar space, or through the rocks that make our earth. The application of these- techniques of the physics laboratory to the study of the stars is the science of astrophysics, and to the investigation of the earth is geophysics. Yet the origin of the most valuable contribution to the world's trade and commerce ever made by geophysics remains lost in deep obscurity. Unknown even is the country wherein lived the unsung genius who invented the first geophysical instrument, the mariner's compass! Worse yet, it is not certain whether this invaluable guide of man had its beginnings in Europe or in Asia. A Chinese legend tells of the Emperor Hwang-ti, who attacked his enemy Tchi-yeou on the plains of Tehou-lou in the year 2634 B.C., whereupon the latter magically raised such a fog that the Emperor could not pursue the retreating troops. Manganous oxide is readily soluble in concentrated ammonia solutions containing ammonium salts. Lixiviants of ammonia and ammonium carbamate permit ready extraction of manganese from reduced ores and the manganese in such solutions may be precipitated by heating to transform the carbamate to carbonate. THE widespread occurrence of manganese in low grade oxide and carbonate ores not amenable to mechanical concentration has led to extensive investigations of hydrometallurgical methods for producing a pure manganese compound suitable for further treatment. Manganese carbonate is the preferable compound. This product when fully crystalline and of not too fine crystal size is easily filtrable and stable in air. It can be converted to other compounds such as the oxides by heating in air or can be reacted with acids for producing salts. A useful hydrometallurgical process must produce relatively concentrated solutions that can be purified easily, reagents must be cyclically used, and heat requirements must be small. Neither the ammonium sulphate nor sulphur dioxide leaching processes that have been tested extensively fulfill these requirements. Other heretofore proposed processes have obvious limitations and have not been tried on a large scale. The present process is based on the discovery by the writer of a new group of aqueous manganese-ammonia complex solutions highly concentrated in ammonia, which permit rapid solution of manganous oxide to concentrations of 80 to 100 g Mn per liter and from which a fully crystalline, easily filtrable manganese carbonate is precipitated by the addition of carbon dioxide and partial ammonia removal. Although the process may be carried out with many ammonium salts, commercial advantages dictate the use of ammonium carbamate, which is obtained when CO2 is passed into concentrated aqueous solutions of ammonia. If the carbamate is used, the only reagents, ammonia and CO2, are volatile and may therefore be recovered from solutions and residues by heating, thus eliminating washing and extensive evaporation. Impurities are controlled easily as most metal oxides are either insoluble in the lixiviant or fail to precipitate with the manganese carbonate. Others are controlled by sulphide addition. The process has been tested extensively on a small scale on a wide variety of ores, including Three Kids, Artillery Peak, Cuyuna, and Chamberlain, as repre-

The almost universal acceptance of electrical logging by the petroleum industry calls for a critical examination of the physical bases of the common methods. This is particularly needed for the natural potential log. The conventional explanations are based on the phenomena of electrofiltration and electro-osmosis. However, experimental data show that they fail to give a basis that is quantitatively sound. Moreover, they lead to interpretations of details of electrical logs that are erroneous. It was found experimenlally that when a plug of shale is placed in a chain of dissimilar electrolytes, a current flow results. Experiments on oil-well cores and fluids similar to those existing in wells show that potentials are set up which are in reasonable agreement with those encountered in electrical logging. Doubtless other sources of potential are important but this explanation not only accounts for much of the potential but also clarifies some fairly familiar examples of misinterpretations. Introduction The extraordinary value of electrical well logging as a tool for petroleum engineers and geologists is now so universally recognized that it is not necessary to point out the ways in which it can be useful. It is sufficient to mention only the saving that has resulted from the elimination of much coring that would have been necessary under former practices and the considerable additions to reserves resulting from the discovery of sands missed in coring. Paradoxically, the very remarkable success that has resulted from the application of electrical logging to correlation and completion problems has cost some of its most consistent users dearly.' The fact that some operators have placed unwarranted faith in erroneous interpretatioils of electrical logs does not reduce the value of the logs. It should, however, make one pause long enough to ask why experienced users should be misled. The answer to this question is not hard to find. In nearly every case, the fault has been oversimplification. This is illustrated very aptly by the familiar interpretation and theory of the natural potential log. Recording and Interpreting Logs The natural potential log is extremely simple to record precisely enough for all present-day uses. One needs only an electrode, a cable to lower the electrode through the drilling mud, a recording meter and a surface ground connection. The electrode can be elaborate but need not be. A simple brass rod 2 in. in diameter and 2 or 3 in. long is quite satisfactory. The cable need not be particularly well insulated, nor need it have a very low resist-

The work described in this paper was carried out in the Research Laboratories of the British Aluminium Company Ltd., under the general direction of A. G. C. Gwyer, Scientific Manager of the Company. In considering the effect of stress?corrosion conditions on metals, or the failure of metal through stress corrosion, it is evidently advisable to adopt a clear definition of the meaning of those phrases. There appears to be general agreement that stress-corrosion conditions may be defined as the continuous application of static stress to a metal while it is exposed to corrosive conditions, but recognition of the occurrence of true stress-corrosion in a metal is often a difficult matter giving rise to some confusion. For the purpose of this paper stress corrosion in a metal is defined as the acceleration of corrosion by the application of static stress. On this view it is necessary to test a metal not merely under stress-corrosion conditions, but also under the same corrosion conditions without the simultaneous application of stress, if the liability of the metal to stress corrosion is to be assessed. Failure of a metal under stress-corrosion conditions is sometimes quoted as evidence of stress corrosion (for example, by Althof(1)2), but this evidence is totally inadequate if the above definition is

G. W. THOMPSON,* Brooklyn, N. Y.-This subject has two aspects, neither of-which can be ignored: these are the economic aspect and the technical aspect. Under ordinary conditions, economic law will take care of the conservation of tin. Under present conditions it seems desirable that economic law should still be permitted to operate as far as is practicable. It is true that this law operates rather slowly, and that under war conditions it cannot be depended upon to give our Government the supply it immediately needs. There should, therefore, be a designation of the essential industries by the Government, and tin should be supplied for those needs, letting the non-essential industries take what is left. At the same time, information ought to be forthcoming as to how tin can be conserved; with tin selling at 80 c. per pound, more or less, it is to the interest of every consumer to get the best information he can as to how he can save tin. Economic law would properly punish those who do not study their own interests in this way. I deprecate, therefore, any centralized socialistic effort toward avoiding penalties through failure to observe and obey economic law. In saying this, however, I am not unmindful that it is desirable for our Government to take such control of the tin situation as may be necessary to the prosecution of the war, practically regardless of the effect of such action upon individual industry, which should studiously seek to adjust itself to the new condition. The Government should promulgate such technical information as it can collect, showing how tin can be conserved, and should urge upon every consumer the exercise of his common sense in self-protection. There is very little danger of any one attempting to hoard or corner tin, in the present state of the market. Most consumers will be glad to live from hand to mouth, covering their sales by purchases, or vice versa. As to the technical aspects: Tin and tin alloys are used to give certain practical and also certain artistic results. The practical factors are those involved in proper adhesion, continuity of surface, protection, the right degree of hardness, proper working qualities, etc. The artistic results are those that appeal purely to the eye or to our cultivated sense of what is desirable. There is no doubt that a great deal of tin could be saved if there were not a demand for certain pleasing effects. How can this saving be brought about? The users of tin hearing alloys are not the only ones involved in this question. The manufacturers of solder and babbitt have for a long time sought to give certain appearances to their fabricated bars and ingots in order to make them more salable. The user of a solder is very apt to judge of its working qualities by the appearance of the bar; the same thing is true with regard to babbitts. The iron industry has been so markedly the cynosure of all eyes, that a sense of weariness has overtaken many on-lookers, and a new wonder is desired. While the commercial phase of the iron industry has necessarily engrossed the public attention and probably is the more worthy of record, still the mechanical and metallurgical phases have recorded conspicuous advances and merit attention. In order to appreciate the present condition of blast-furnace practice, it is necessary before enumerating the advances made during the past decade to give a brief discussion of the tendencies in the methods of administration as well as the conditions governing supremacy, for these factors have modified the aims of the manager. It might also be well to apologize for a record of the advances made during such a short period as a decade, were it not that, for the individual, time is marked as much by the impressions recorded on the brain as by the jumps of the second hand of a watch. Furthermore, this article is written in order to carry out a project of the late Dr. Egleston, to have a record made each decade. I regret that the data collected by him, and forwarded to me, end with 1896, and therefore do not include the interesting results which followed the introduction of Mesabi ores. The perusal of the notes is melancholy reading, somewhat like the feelings we experience in going through a graveyard. It is a record made up of so many plants, which have ceased to be factors in the iron world, if they are not entirely moribund. Historically, they would be interesting, emphasizing as they do the abnormal and somewhat overestimated importance of furnace lines, taken without proper reference to volume of blast and nature of stock used. I regret, however, that the time at my disposal does not permit of this presentation.

In the course of studies made on the Ti-Cu alloy system,' particles identified visually as TiH were encountered unexpectedly in a specimen of high-purity Ti-0.8Cu alloy. The particles did not appear immediately after preparation, but following-storage in a dessicator for several days. Since the alloy had been vacuum annealed to a low hydrogen concentration (19 ppm by vacuum-fusion analysis), the appearance of the TiH particles was suspected as a surface contamination effect. A specimen of a Ti-0.8Cu alloy had been annealed 2 hr at 790°C and water quenched, to produce the single-phase equiaxed a structure. The metallo-graphic sample was ground through 600X paper, rough-polished on a high-speed wheel with a mixture of alumina and chromic acid, awLhish-polished on a slow-speed wheel. Disturbed metal layers were removed from the final surface by alternately etching with a 1 1/2 HF-3 1/2 HNO3-95 H2O solution and polishing on the slow-speed wheel with fine alumina. The final surface was swab-etched with a 1 1/2 HF-3 1/2 HNO3-95 H2O solution, rinsed in tap water, and dried in a stream of filtered air. The micro-structure, shown in Fig. 1, was composed of equiaxed a grains without any trace of second phase. After storage in a dessicator for 3 days, the appearance of small particles in the structure became evident (see Fig. 2). After 7 days of storage, the particles were more distinct, and in some grains, began to appear as elongated particles. The specimen then was etched a second time (without repolishing) to produce the structure shown in Fig. 4. On the basis of micro- structural observation, the line markings were identified as TiH; attempts to obtain diffraction patterns from the surface for positive identification were not successful. That the structure is a surface effect was demonstrated by grinding with 240X paper to remove the surface layer. The surface then was ground, polished, and etched using the procedures described previously. The same observations were made: the freshly prepared surface was devoid of any second phase, whereas the particles again appeared after several days storage. The same effect has been observed in other a-stabilized titanium alloys, including a high-purity Ti-0.20 alloy containing only 16 ppm H by analysis. The effect has not yet been observed in unalloyed titanium, nor does its appearance appear to be consistent with any particular alloy system. From these observations, it is concluded that certain a-titanium alloys are susceptible to the formation of titanium hydride at the surface of metallo-graphic specimens. THE underground haulage system in the lead-silver mine of the-Bunker Hill & Sullivan Co., situated at Kellogg, Idaho, is the most extensive in the Coeur d'Alène district, comprising about 35,000 ft. of tunnels, drifts, and cross-cuts where locomotive haulage is in use. The main working adit, known as the Kellogg tunnel, or No. 9 level, is approximately 10,000 ft. in length from the portal to the main working shaft and extends beyond that about 4,500 ft. in each of two directions. On this level all the ore from the Bunker Hill & Sullivan, the Sierra Nevada Consolidated, and the Caledonia Mining Co. an average of 44,600 tons per month-is hauled to the mills, located a short distance from the portal. Electric haulage by the trolley-type locomotive is used on this level throughout. Below this level, at intervals of 200 ft. vertically, are five other working levels (Nos. 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14); and the total haulage distance on these, where electric locomotives are used, is approximately 16,000 ft. No. 13 level has but recently been opened up and is not working-to capacity; while the main cross-cut on No. 14 has just been started, and has no need of power haulage. Of the four levels equipped with electric haulage, Nos. 11, 12, and 13 have storage-battery locomotives, and No. 10 still retains the trolley type by reason of the small and decreasing tonnage produced.

HISTORY OF PRODUCTION AND USE In 1899 the consumption of fluorspar in the United States was reported as 16,000 tons. The invention of the open-hearth method of steel manufacture, plus the beginnings of a fluorine chemical industry, pushed consumption of fluorspar to 250,000 tons by 1918. In contrast to these consumption statistics of the past, the most recent statistics available (1972) indicate a total fluorspar usage in the United States of 1.352 million st (Table 15.4D.1). Fluorspar remains the world's cheapest source of fluorine, and its unique properties make the mineral the most desirable fluxing agent for steel refining. The linking of fluorine with carbon in the late 1930s resulted in the production of fluorocarbon, and constant growth in production over the years has formed the backbone of a strong fluorine chemical industry. For example, in 1972 it is estimated that total fluorocarbon production amounted to 2.113 million tons, and that, in this process, over 1.351 million tons of acid-grade fluorspar was consumed. The producers of primary aluminum long have been concerned about the fast dwindling reserves of natural cryolite. They found the solution to their problem by utilizing fluorspar for the manufacture of synthetic cryolite and aluminum fluoride. Nuclear weapons, as well as the growing number of peaceful uses for atomic reactors, constitute a market for uranium hexafluoride. This chemical and chlorine pentafluoride, used as an oxidizer with rocket fuels, are products that are as much a novelty as fluorocarbons were 25 years ago. Judging from past success in the field of fluorine chemistry research, it is safe to assume that the market for these chemicals will grow in the future. Three major industries account for the bulk of the fluorspar consumption: steel refining, fluorine chemical, and primary aluminum production. These industries have had a pattern of fabulous growth in the past, and their future plans point to a continuation of this pattern. It seems logical that the fluorspar usage also should continue its upward trend. Considering the growth of the fluorspar industry since 1899, and the obvious dependence on imports of fluorspar as a raw material, one of the most puzzling aspects of the past has been the apparent lack of coordination between fluorspar production and fluorspar consumption. A few authoritative voices have spoken out concerning the need to expand fluorspar production in order to meet consumption of the future. During World War II, the U.S. Government took positive steps in this direction by authorizing purchases at attractive prices for its "stockpile program." Generalized conditions for rod or ribbon growth by the twin plane re-entrant edge mechanism are given. It was shown that this mechanism can result in growth of twinned platelets from dilute metal solutions. The platelrts 01 the fee metals are faceted by (111) planes and contain two or more twin planes. Microsegregation traces were revealed in silver grown from a thallium solution. VOGEL has already set down conditions for dendritic growth;1 however, this was the normal single-crystal dendritic growth experienced during solidification. In this work it is desired to set down the crystallographic conditions that will lead to rod or ribbon growth with smooth facets. These are as follows. a) The growth must be crystallographically limited (i.e., faceted growth). b) In order to have directed growth, some mechanism must allow easier nucleation than two-dimensional nucleation. That mechanism is afforded by the re-entrant edges at twin planes.213 Thus there must be twin planes present in the rods or ribbons. c) The growth direction must lie in the twin plane. If not, the twin plane will grow to the face or side of the ribbon and the site of easy nucleation will be lost. d) The growth direction must be parallel to at least one plane of the faceting planes, and no set of the faceting planes can be perpendicular to the growth direction. A corollary to these conditions involves the number of twin planes necessary to maintain the indestructible re-entrant edge. The number depends on the crystal structure of the material. An analysis of the data available shows that a material whose faceting planes form an open figure requires at least one twin plane while materials whose faceting planes form a closed figure require at least two twin planes in order to form the indestructible re-entrant edges for extended growth. The conditions and an assessment of the possibility of rod or ribbon growth are given in Table I for several crystal systems. As can be seen the fee, diamond and zinc blende, or-thorhombic, rhombohedral, and one form of the hexagonal lattice systems can yield this type of growth, but not the bcc metals nor the hexagonal

No outstanding example of an important producing unit operation exists in California today where the competitive drilling drainage feature is or was entirely eliminated We need not feel, however, that the thought of unit operation had its birth in 1924, when Henry L. Doherty named and sponsored it so strongly before the American Petroleum Institute and our own organization. No man or company in California ever drilled a wildcat well without exerting every possible effort to get all of the structure, so as to control drilling and avoid competition. Overproduction did not begin in 1923, so there has always been the wish to avoid it. In this state the practice of selling acreage around a wildcat has not been followed, except possibly in rare instances. The operator drilling the wildcat knew he must pay the bill alone, so he endeavored to get the benefit of his effort by tying up all of the land around his well and by so planning his different lease obligations as to avoid as much offsetting as possible. If he failed to get all of the land, it was because someone's price was too high, some other oil man also had the same idea and already held some lands, a competitor took leases away from him while his work was still incomplete, or (as was so often the case) the hidden structure when developed did not prove to be where the wildcatter thought it would be. The last named condition often led to a forced drilling campaign by the last leases secured and thus to serious drilling drainage problems. Ownership of the Land The land situation differs a great deal in various parts of the state. In the San Joaquin Valley, all the land is surveyed into sections and townships. Railroad land grants embraced a part of the land. In the areas that were developed at an early date, as at Kern River, Coalinga, McKittrick and the Sunset-Midway field, such land as the railroad company's diligent land department had been unable to sell for a song as grazing land still remained in its ownership. FOR the purposes of this discussion, the direct gasification of coal means the of hydrogen and carbon monoxide by the well-known water-gas reaction. Chemicals or other synthetic products may be made from these constituents of the gas and under such circumstances the gas is called synthesis gas. Or, if the same gas is used as a fuel, it is called blue gas or water gas. This type of gas has usually been made from coke, especially in this country, and has been used both for fuel purposes and for manufacture of chemicals. Recently, natural gas has gained the ascendancy as a source of synthesis gas for manufacture of chemicals because of its relative cheapness. As natural gas becomes less readily available and more expensive, coal will take its place as a raw material for the preparation of synthesis gas. This substitution will probably take the form of direct gasification of the coal rather than the present two-step procedure of carbonization of the coal followed by gasification of the coke. The chief reason for this probability is the intensive research now being carried on by several organizations to develop successful and economical processes for the direct gasification of coal, which is a considerably cheaper fuel than coke. In the following pages an attempt has been made to predict the chemicals that will result from this future production of synthesis gas by the direct gasification of coal. CHEMICAL REACTIONS OF SYNTHESIS GAS Given the proper conditions, there are many chemical reactions leading to production of useful products that can be carried out with this mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. These many reactions may be grouped into three classes: (1) interaction of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, possibly with addition of other reactants; (2) reaction of hydrogen with various substances; (3) reaction of carbon monoxide with various substances. Thus sometimes hydrogen and carbon monoxide are utilized together in the same chemical reaction while in other instances only the hydrogen or only the carbon monoxide is required as a reactant. Fortunately, practical methods are available for securing either hydrogen or carbon monoxide from synthesis gas, some of which are also applicable for changing the ratio of these two constituents in the gas when that is desirable.

THE following paper is intended to be suggestive only, and to open the way for discussion and further observation. Its preparation was requested only two days before the time limit set for the submission of the papers comprising this symposium. Thus no time existed for detailed studies so it is largely a memorandum of such facts as have come incidentally to the notice of the writer in the study of coal in the field. The field study of sulfur in coal has received very little special attention or description from coal students. The presence of sulfur concretions is noted in hundreds of descriptions, and certain benches of a coal bed may be described as "sulfury" or the presence and position of sulfur bands may be noted in coal sections in connection with sampling. It may be accepted that some sulfur is present in all coal. The amount varies greatly in different regions, in different beds, and in the same bed in different areas. The anthracite of Rhode Island comes the nearest of any coal known to the writer of being free from sulfur, several analyses of that coal showing less than 0.1 per cent. Subbituminous coals in Colorado in a few places have close to 0.2 per cent. of sulfur on the dry-coal basis and in other states subbituminous coals approach this lower limit. Bituminous coals seldom run under 0.4 per cent. of sulfur on the dry basis, though in a few places dry bituminous coals in Colorado and Washington have between 0.3 and 0.4 per cent. The better known bituminous coals have almost everywhere over 0.4 per cent. The best of the Pocahontas and New River coals run close to 0.4 per cent., but there is very little commercial coal in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, or the other states that runs under 0.5 per cent. on the dry basis. From these minimum figures, the amount will range up to 5 or 6 per cent. or higher if visible sulfur is not excluded. It must be remembered that the usual -analysis of a coal bed is not intended to give the total proportion of sulfur in the bed but the amount in the coal after the removal of the more obvious and larger sulfur masses.
