Duquesne Light Co.'s Portal No. 3 mine, in the Warwick group of mines in Southwestern Pennsylvania, was started in June 1965 with battery- powered tractor-trailer face haulage. The area as- signed to Portal No. 3 encompasses over 8000 acres of coal and will be developed by driving a set of main entries through the center of the tract in roughly a westerly direction, and sub mains on a 45º deflection angle in roughly a northerly direction (Figs 1 & 2). In the original planning these sub mains were to be at a 90º angle with the mains, but difficult roof conditions necessitated a change in plans. The entries and crosscuts are driven 18 ft wide in the normal Sewickley seam which varies between 46 and 56 in. high. The mine bottom is a strong shale and in average, cool or dry outside conditions stands up well for rubber-tired haulage equipment, but when the outside conditions are hot and humid, the bottom becomes soft and muddy. This condition lessens as the mine faces are advanced further from the portals because the condensation will then take place principally on the surfaces of intake entries outby the working areas. To aid the situation, an air cooling system was installed and is used as conditions dictate.

The fact that certain types of ore-deposits have attained their present condition through the action of descending surface waters was, perhaps, first clearly pointed out by Posepny.l The oxidizing effects of such waters were discussed by Pen-rose,2 and many papers dealing with this phase of the subject have subsequently appeared. That secondary enrichment of sulphide ores, however, might be produced by descending surface waters was not clearly understood until after the copper-bearing veins of the Butte district, Mont., had been carefully studied by the geologists of the U. S. Geological Survey, although De Launay3 had suggested that sulphides might be transported from point to point and re-deposited in the zone above the level of ground-water. As a result of the study of the Butte district, two papers by geologists engaged in the work appeared within a short interval. The first by Weed: dealing with the enrichment of veins by later metallic sulphides ; and the second by Emmons; treating of the secondary enrichment of ore-deposits in general. In the latter paper it was pointed out that a typical vein of sulphide ores which has been subjected to the action of descending surface-waters exhibits four zones,—an upper or surface-zone, in which the changes hare been mainly of removal, the products being typically oxides; a second zone of oxide enrichment, in which the less soluble metals brought from above have been precipitated as carbonates or oxides; a third zone of sulphide enrichment,

The reported production of petroleum in the Dominion of Canada for 1930 was 1,555,199 bbl., an increase of 455,373 bbl. over 1929. Alberta accounted for nearly all the production with Ontario and New Brunswick, the other two productive provinces, contributing less than 1 per cent, of the total. The completion of about 25 producing wells in Alberta was more than sufficient to offset the decline of the older wells in that province and the small decline in Ontario. The production of about 5000 bbl. in New Brunswick represents a restricted output to meet the market demand. Table 1 shows the production by provinces for the past 10 years. The consumption of natural gas for all purposes in Canada reached a new record of practically 40,000,000,000 cu. ft. in 1930, which was a considerable increase over 1929. The estimated value of the gas output was $10,500,000, against a little over $5,000,000 for the total petroleum production. Gas wells in Alberta accounted for over 75 per cent. of the total, with Ontario second and New Brunswick a poor third. The outlook for 1931 is for very little change in production of either gas or oil in Ontario and New Brunswick but for a substantial increase in both in Alberta.

Slip on (11221 planes, which do not contain a close-packed direction, has been identified on crystals strained at —190°C. Evidence is also presented to show that (1071) pyramidal slip is a mode of deformation at 25ºC in a limited orientation range. PYRAMIDAL slip (l011) <1120> in magnesium at elevated temperatures has been established for some time.1-2 More recently, Burke and Hibbard reported this mode of deformation at 25ºC, but their results were questioned by Craig.&apos; Also, as far as the present authors know, slip in magnesium on pyramidal planes of the second order, Type II (1122)) has not previously been reported, although Gilman"," identified (1122) slip in another hexagonal metal

This paper describes some properties of steels in the composition range 0.10 to 0.30 per cent carbon and 1 to 7 per cent chromium. It is well known that some steels of this type develop high tensile strengths upon receiving comparatively simple heat treatments, such as ordinary air cooling from appropriate temperatures, with or without subsequent tempering treatments. These high strengths are frequently associated with unusual toughness as measured by the Izod or Charpy impact test. The chromium content, in addition to imparting the above properties, enhances the resistance to corrosion and improves the strength and oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures. Moreover, these steels have good forging and fabricating properties, as evidenced by the fact that several thousand tons of seamless tubing have been made during the past five years from steels containing 0.10 to 0.25 per cent carbon and 5 per cent chromium. INTRODUCTION Most works on flotation of ions and precipitates from solutions have been summarized recently (1-3). Flotation is more desirable than thickening or centrifuging because of higher recovery, productivity, simplicity of apparatus and better economics in general. Electrolytic flotation that utilizes gases is more favorable than other flotation processes because of the following: higher dispersity of gas bubbles, low coalescence of the bubbles, possibility of gradual regulation of the dispersity and other parameters of flotation (4-5). Flotation from solutions is mostly based on the use of alkaline reagents as precipitants (5). Flotation from acid solutions is less common. We used multicomponent solutions with more than 2-3 components, unlike previous research methods. Acidic flotation allows recirculation of solutions to previous operations such as leaching, etc. REAGENTS FOR PRECIPITATION Electroflotation was studied over a wide range of pH with the addition of ferrocyanide, oxyquinoline, hydroxide and carbonate precipitants. In recent works (1,2,6,7) on flotation of Ni, Cu, Zn from alkaline solutions, mostly ferrocyanides were applied. Our choice was oxyquinoline because of the following: 8-oxyquinoline is a nonspecific reagent for many metals, it is readily soluble in acids and alkalis, oxyquinolates of the studied metals are in soluble compounds, the reagent works over a wide range of pH, it is widely available, oxyquinolate precipitates are stable when exposed to air, are readily floatable, and are easily converted to oxides of the metals by sintering.

The regular activities of the Institute are financed mainly by income derived from members&apos; dues, from advertising in MINING AND METALLURGY, and from the sale of publications to the public. In addition, collateral activities and special projects are financed each year by means of income from endowed funds controlled and administered by the Institute. In the aggregate, the principal sums of these endowments amount to more than $530,000. An active effort is being made to in¬crease the endowment funds of the Institute through a standing committee, of which H. T. Hamilton is chairman, and of which the other members are: W. H. Aldridge, George D. Barron, Cleveland E. Dodge, D. C. Jackling, Henry Krumb and J. V. W. Reynders. This committee feels that there exists a tremendous opportunity for the Institute to be of ever-growing service to the public, to the mineral industries, and to the profession. It welcomes suggestions as to names of men of means who are vitally interested in the mineral industries, and to whom the opportunity to make a contribution or bequest might appeal favorably if presented in the proper light by the committee.

This paper describes three programs, currently in use within MSHA, for graphic analysis of accident frequency data. The first program, TREND, plots confidence bands for curved trends in data compiled over a period of time. In addition to detecting statistically significant upward or downward trends, the program can be used to determine whether an observation at a particular time deviates significantly from the historical pattern. The second program, POIPORP, plots interval estimates for the risk of accident in each of several environments, given an observed number of incidents and exposure time at each environment. POIPORP is designed to quantify the uncertainty implicit in incidence rates based on limited information and to facilitate statistically valid comparisons among the rates. The third program, CINDY, plots dynamically adaptive control charts for accident or injury experience at a given location. These charts are used to detect statistically significant departures from a changing standard or a previously established trend. All three programs are written in FORTRAN IV, utilizing DISSPLA and IMSL. They exemplify forms of statistical analysis that would not be practical without a computer. Use of the programs is illustrated with applications to coal mine fatality and injury experience.

THE following example of the practical application of engineering geology is of interest in that it demonstrates the advantage of keeping accurate records of all wells, whether drilled by one&apos;s self or by others, together with the advantage gained by gathering such data during the process of development. The fault described was found in the autumn of 1915, during the hurried development caused by the discovery of the famous Gusher Bend pool in Red River Parish, Louisiana. The writer was at the time employed by one of the operating companies as geologist, and the example is a portion of the routine work. LOCATION The oil fields of northern Louisiana and east Texas are located in Caddo, Bossier, De Soto and Red River Parishes, Louisiana, and Marion County, Texas. A very narrow strip of the eastern portion of the latter is productive. The producing oil pools are known as the Caddo Field, in the northern part, and the De Soto-Red River Field, in the southern. The two fields are 60 miles apart. There are several gas fields between then, but no important supply of oil has been found, though there are several producing wells in the Anona chalk, locally called the chalk rock, in the Elm Grove gas field in Township 16 North, Range 11 West (see Plate 1).

(written discussion *) .-As it is impossible to spare the time for a lengthy discusson of this excellent paper, I am dwelling only on points where either the information is not clear or opinion differs radically from that of the authors. On page 1218, relative to oil rock, the authors state that the presence of oil rock is always taken as a favorable indication of proximity to ore. As thick, highly carbonaceous, oil rock has been found quite often in isolated patches outside of the district proper, the mere presence of oil rock is not always an indication of the propinquity to ore deposits. Regarding glass rock, I agree with the authors, that, generally speak-ing, sphalerite in the glass rock is spotty; however, they fail to mention that nearly all mines contain more or less ore in the glass rock, the usual location being near the toe of the pitch. On page 1220, they say that disseminated deposits are only found in, or close to, the oil rock. To refute this statement, I refer them to a typical disseminated deposit situated at the Adam and Eve shaft of the Frontier Mining Co. This deposit is located in the central horizon of the Galena dolomite, that is, in those sedimentaries containing flint nodules. Perfect crystals of sphalerite are found disseminated through-out the rock, and are commonly known by the miners as strawberry jack. I believe all top runs, or upper deposits as described above, should be classed as disseminated; physically the ore makes its occurrence in just such a manner.

PROLOGUE The Yaguki mine, which is located near the southern end of the Tohoku region, Japan, near the coast of the Pacific Ocean, had had a long history as a copper mine, but had not been operated since 1925. About 30 years later it was reopened by Nittetsu Mining Company, and in 1958 a small flotation and magnetic separation plant, a so-called test plant, started production. The ball mill the author first met, a 8x4x4x7 ft tricone mill, called No.1 mill, had started running at that time. With his experience in initial, running of this mill he realized that the ball mill was not simply a preparatory process to flotation, but a determinant factor for flotation performance, an energy-consuming and costly process, and that its operation control was an important task in the plant (1). The working part of an operating ball mill is the ball load inside, whose properties govern the grinding performance. Its size distribution affects the efficiency greatly and the capacity is nearly proportional to its weight. When a ball mill operates for a long period of time with a constant and consistent addition of renewal balls, wear and renewal of balls are balanced, and an equilibrium ball load is formed. A stable equilibrium load is the primary requirement for a stable ball mill operation. However, renewal ball size would be the most influential factor affecting efficiency and capacity of operating ball mills. This section is about fifty miles in length, extending from the semi-magnetic and brown iron-ore deposits, near South Fork of Holston River, on Virginia and Tennessee State line, through Bristol, Tenn., Goodson, Imboden, or Mineral City, and Big Stone Gap, Va., to the Cumberland Mountain, on the line between Virginia and Kentucky. Following a geological section from the southeast for near South Holston River), to the northwest, we encounter, first: The slates of No. III.,* generally dipping southeasterly with a trend of N. 65&apos; E. They ontcrop along the north bank of South Holston River, having a thickness of 375 feet, 260 feet of which, as at Pen Rhyn quarry and the James quarry, southeast of Bristol, is slate of high grade for interior architectural uses. Next northwest is an undulating series, giving surface-exhibits of these slates, alternating with Trenton limestone, for 21/2 miles, to the&apos; line of semi-magnetic red iron-ores and brown iron-ores, of the upper horizon of No. II., generally pitching southeasterly, as though the whole series, including the slate described, formed a great trough, with its middle

For the past year we have had in use at the Durham furnace a set of hollow pig-patterns made of iron, which have given such satis factory results that I think a description of them would be of interest to the members of the Institute. Before the introduction of these iron patterns, we used the ordi nary wooden patterns, made in the usual way with straps of iron along the sides to protect the corners from wearing off. The size and shape of these wooden patterns are shown in Fig. 1. When the patterns were new, the pigs weighed about 130 pounds each, and were uniform in size, and the moulding was clean. But constant use soon wore the patterns away; and at the end of a few months, the pigs had become, in consequence, so much lighter that the moulding, daily, of several additional beds was necessary to accommodate the same quantity of iron. As the patterns wear away, the moulding becomes ragged and the pigs rough. Moreover, wooden patterns are often destroyed by fire. I have known an entire set to be destroyed by a break-out of iron. The iron pattern which I have designed is free from all the objections to the wooden pattern, being not only more durable, but, in the long run, far cheaper. The iron pattern having the same shape and size as the wooden one, is made of the best flange-iron, of No. 13 gauge. After the sheets have been cut to the proper size, three heats are required for the flanging. INTRODUCTION Numerical methods commonly used in rock mechanics, such as finite element, displacement discontinuity, and boundary integral equation methods, offer solutions to problems which can be described by differential equations subject to boundary conditions. These numerical methods use approximations leading to solutions in terms of matrix algebra and numerical integration. Many rock mechanics problems which are beyond the scope of such approximations can be treated effectively by application of techniques developed in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). Among the possible applications are: site characterization (Duda, 1975), geological interpretation (Smith and Baker, 1983), solution of problems involving rock joint networks, and underground construction. Each of these applications utilize particular features of Al. Here we shall present results of AI applications which utilize primarily search and to lesser extent learning or pattern recognition. Specific examples presented are in the field of rock fracture network problems and underground construction. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE Artificial intelligence techniques attempt to achieve human-like reasoning and learning capabilities. This reasoning capability is valuable in applications where repetition, complexity, or tediousness makes human-like intervention impractical. In rock mechanics this occurs, for example, in stochastic rock mass modeling applications where some complex decision-making is required for each of a large number of iterations.

The design of slurry launders has usually been based on strictly empirical concepts. An examination of the most common procedures reveals that they do not account for many of the variables that are recognized as significant for slurry transport. These may include flow rate, volume concentration of solids, solids specific gravity, solids size distribution, particle shape, launder geometry, and roughness of the wetted surface. It was decided to develop a design procedure, which would accomplish two things: First: Take into consideration most of the known significant variables and systematize the procedure to assure consistent results. Second: Provide a rational basis for examining and utilizing operating data to refine and improve the system. To accomplish this, it was necessary to develop a basic design concept. This concept has been developed through a complex development history, and yet still appears workable and technically sound. That concept may be outlined as follows: First: The solids transport velocity is the fundamental basis for slurry launder design. Second: The stream configuration, hence the launder size, is integrated with the solids transport velocity so that the actual stream velocity exceeds the solids transport velocity. Third: The launder slope is that which will achieve the

THE Section on Aerial Geologizing of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers convened on Monday afternoon, Feb. 17, 1936, during the Annual Meeting of the Institute. Mr. Theodore Marvin presided. CHAIRMAN MARVIN.-We hope to get through with the papers on the program in time so that you can examine the instruments that are dis-played here, and also the photographs and air views brought by the Fairchild people. This is what we might call the first bread and butter session of the Aviation Committee. The group, as many of you know, was started at the request of the Board of Directors two years ago. We have had two sessions since then, both of them of a somewhat general nature, their pur-pose being to point out the reasons why mining and petroleum engineers should be more interested in the facilities of aviation. Today we have two papers. The first is one by Mr. Eliel, of the Fairchild Company&apos;s California branch. In Mr. Eliel&apos;s absence, Mr. Gale, of the Fairchild Company, will read it. C. H. GALE.-Before I begin to read Mr. Eliel&apos;s paper, I would like to point out two instruments that he mentions. One is what he calls the solar-navigator, a new type of aerial navigating device which he has developed for use in flying cameras in aerial surveys. Flying a camera at high altitudes over unfamiliar territory is a very difficult procedure and only a few pilots in this country can do it. So far as I know, this is the first time this device has been discussed in public. Another facility I want to refer to in advance is the use of the stereoplanigraph in making contour maps from photographs. This is an extremely interesting procedure, which we are appreciating more than ever at the present time.
