ThE shape of the primary solid-solubility limits in copper-rich Cu-Si-Zn alloys has been discussed recently1 in terms of the atomic size effects and the electron concentration, e/a. Although these limits are parallel to lines of constant e/a near the Cu-Zn binary system, they deviate and become sharply restricted near the Cu-Si binary system. Hence, it appears that the primary solid solutions with higher silicon contents are restricted by the presence of the intermediate phases, [, X, and p, which follow them in the ternary system. owever, a similar restriction in solid solubility might also result from an interaction in the copper matrix between silicon and zinc. Evidence for such possible interactions has been observed, for example, in the Al-Mg-Si systion.A where a contraction of lattice spacings in the ternary solid solution appears to correspond to an electrochemical interaction between the two solute elements, magnesium and silicon. The observed contraction is associated with restricted solid solubility. It was also shown1 that the extent of the primary solid solubility did not follow the trends predicted by the lattice-distortion oncept." This again suggested that the solubility limits are strongly affected by the stability of the intermediate phases, I, 1, and X . In order to test the above hypotheses, lattice-parameter measurements of the fcc @-phase alloys were determined within the ternary system at a constant electron concentration (e/a = 1.30) and also at a constant zinc content. Alloys of predetermined composition were prepared from high-purity metals and melted and cast under reduced pressures of helium in quartz capsules. Since the weight losses were very slight and did not exceed one part in 2000, the nominal compositions listed in Table I were accepted without chemical analyses. The ingots were homogenized

The brittle fracture of a Tic-lnconel cermet at room temperature is shown to occur primarily as a result of the cracking of the larger carbide particles (at a tensile strain of approximately 0.3 pct), followed by cracking of adjacent, smaller carbides and, finally, by the rupture of the lnconel matrix between cracked carbides (at a strain of-1.2 pct). No evidence was found for separation at the interface between carbide and matrix at any point in the fracture process. MATERIAL used in this study was a Tic-Inconel cermet prepared by infiltration (50 pct Tic, 50 pct Inconel: designated as TC66-I). A thin section of this material was brazed to a piece of low carbon steel and then mounted in lucite for metal-lographic preparation." Studies of the adsorption of dialkyldithiocarbamates at the surfaces of galena and sphalerite have shown that characteristic contact angles are obtained at galena surfaces in the 7-10 pH range, whereas lower angles are obtained at unactivated sphalerite surfaces even at pH 71 Further, the angles at sphalerite surfaces progressively decrease with increase in pH. However, when sphalerite is activated with cupric sulfate, characteristic contact angles are obtained at pH 7 and beyond. This shows that galena and sphalerite can be selectively floated with dithiocarbamate collectors at pH 7 and beyond. Experimental Materials Ore: The lead-zinc ore for the present study was obtained through the courtesy of the Geological Survey of India from Dariba, Udaipur, Rajasthan, India. The average ore analyzed 15.5% lead, 11.6% zinc, 6.7% iron, 15.6% sulfur and 36.6% acid insolubles. The ore was crushed in a Denver laboratory rod mill and sieved in a Denver automatic sieve shaker to obtain a -200- to +250-mesh (Tyler standard) fraction. This particular size was chosen because it was conducive to good liberation of sulfide minerals, both from one another and from gangue minerals. Collectors: Dimethyl, diethyl, diisopropyl and diisobutyl dithiocarbamates were prepared and purified by the methods described by Klopping and Van der Kerk.2 A freshly prepared 0.03% dithiocarbamate solution in distilled water was used for flotation studies. Frother: A 0.03% solution of pine oil in ethyl alcohol was employed. Activator: 7.3 g of cupric sulfate pentahydrate were dissolved in 1 1 of water and used for the activation of sphalerite. Depressant: 16.0 g of zinc sulfate heptahydrate were dissolved in 1 1 of water and used for the depression of sphalerite.

THE purpose of this note is to draw attention to the possibility that a melt may be contaminated by a material not in direct contact with it by means of gaseous intermediate agents. In recent years silicon has assumed a position of importance because of its use in rectifiers and transistors and close attention has been required to control of both purification and contamination during all stages of preparation.' This note reports the observation that a graphite heater may have contaminated silicon ingots without direct physical contact through reactions that developed gaseous products. Several ingots made with the equipment of Hino and Stauss,2 using a graphite heater in a dried helium atmosphere, were found to have a small amount of a very hard substance on the free surface. X-ray analysis by F. W. von Batchelder showed the sub- stance to be Sic. Similar contamination was not found when the heater was tantalum, indicating that the carbon had not come from an original impurity in the silicon powder. One source of the carbon could have been volatile matter released from the graphite heater. This heater had been used about ten times at the time of the observations. A second source of carbon could have been a direct reaction between the quartz crucible and the graphite heater to form CO, or an indirect reaction involving a crucible-melt interaction and volatile SiO as an intermediate product. Such reactions should have developed Sic on the heater; and in fact a yellow powder did form on the inside of the graphite heater although its composition could not be determined. References 'H. C. THERE is probably no more interesting group of mineral fuels to be found in any country than that occurring within the limits of the new State of Colorado. The supplies are so abundant, and the occurrence and distribution are so favorable for easy development and transportation to the future manufacturing centres of the State, that they are destined to play a very important part in the material growth and prosperity of the region, the more so because of the rich and varied stores of ores awaiting metallurgical treatment, and the comparative scarcity of timber for fuel. From a purely scientific point, also, these lignitic coals form an interesting and important series. An examination of their geological occurrence and relations opens up new and important questions regarding the comparative value of various kinds of geological evidence, while a study of the character and composition of this class of fuels, which forms a connecting link, as it were, between the lignites and the true bituminous coals, may lead to a more thorough and accurate classification of mineral fuels. The analyses here presented are from samples, of not less than fifty pounds each, obtained by myself during the summer of 1875, and may be regarded as representing very fairly the average run of

WHAT was certainly the greatest event of January, and perhaps it will prove to be the greatest of 1923, or even of the next decade, was the meeting of the premiers of the principal Euro-pean powers in Paris on Jan. 2, to consider what should be done with respect to German reparations. The French and British were unable to come to any agree-ment, and the conference broke up on Jan. 4. The French and British parted friends, but each with the determination henceforth to pursue its own economic and political way. This event was profound in its significance and perhaps will be calamitous) in its consequences. Following the disruption of the Conference at Paris, the French immediately began preparations to occupy the Ruhr district on the ground that Germany was in default on coal deliveries, without waiting. for Jan. 15, the next due date for reparation payment. This action by the French led to orders being issued by President Harding on Jan. 10 for the withdrawal of the remainder of the American troops on the Rhine. Thus ended the physical participation in. European affairs by the American army, whose vanguard landed in France in June, 1917. The French occupation of the Ruhr Valley, i.e., the great industrial region of western Westphalia, was made with a large military force. The Germans offered no physical resistance, and passed under French control with sullen resentment. The coal miners to a con-siderable extent refused to work and there was more or less disorganization of railway service. Before the end of the month the opinion was expressed that the French occupation was an economic failure and there were reports of French blast furnaces being blown out for lack of coke.

The object of the present paper is to describe a primitive method of gold-extraction, practiced by a small colony of Chinese in the district of Tomoh, one of the Siamese-Malayan States. This district has been worked for gold about 150 years, but has been only twice or thrice visited by Europeans, who are looked upon with a good deal of jealousy by the miners. The gold-district, covering not more than 10 square miles, is situated about Lat. 5' 47l N. and Long. -101' 39 E., on the headwaters of the river Teluban. It is a very mountainous region, lying on the northern flanks of the great range that forms the watershed between the rivers Patani, Kelantan, Teluban, etc., on the north and Perak on the south. The gold occurs in narrow veins and leaders of quartz, intersect- ' ing and intercalated among irregularly upheaved and contorted, highly metamorphosed, micaceous and chloritic schists. These veins vary between 3 inches and 3 feet in thickness, and are sometimes very rich. The geology of this region is thus very similar to that characterizing gold-regions all over the world; if must, however, be.

For some years past, those interested in the development of the increasingly important mining industry of Canada, havc urged the adoptioi~ by the Dominion Parliament of a federal mining-law, which would have the force and stability of statutory enactment. At present, placer-mining in the Yukon Territory is governed by the Yukon Placer Mining Act. All other mining under federal jurisdiction is governed by Orders in Council and Ministerial Iiegulations. In the earlier stages of development, it is perhaps a matter of neces~ity that these important matters should be so dealt with; but it is now felt that the time has come when mining-rights in the extensive regions under federal control should be put on a permanent basis, and that any changes required from timc to time should be made only after full and open discu~sioii in Parliament. A short sketch will suffice to indicate how vast and varied the interests affected really are. When the Dominion of Canada mas constituted by the Inlperial Statute known as the British North America Act of 1867 (which into force by proclamation on July 1 of that year), it comprised only the present Provinces of Ontario, Quebec, Nora Scotia, and New Brunswick; but provision was made for the inclusion of Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, British Columbia, Rupert's Land, and the North West Territories. NUMEROUS papers have been published on the use of graphic methods to determine the best curve to be used in estimating the production decline of oil wells but, as far as the writer has been able to ascertain, nothing has been published dealing directly with the subject as to how curves may be worked out mathematically, which will conform most closely to the production data under consideration in any given instance; hence the writer has endeavored to show by means of a few concrete examples just how such appli-cation can be made. Among valuation engineers, two types of curves are in current use for the representation of the decline in production of oil wells. One may be represented by the equation, y = krx, sometimes known as a percentage curve, for the reason that the production for any period is multiplied by a constant rate or percentage to obtain the production for the succeeding period. This curve appears as a straight line on semi-logarithmic cross-section paper. The other curve may be represented by the equation, y = kxn, and is shown as a straight line on logarithmic cross-section paper. In each of these equations, y represents the number of barrels produced over a given period of time, and x the successive periods of time. The other letters are constants to be determined for each well or group of wells considered in arriving at the most probable curve to represent the rate of production for a given property; from which the underground reserves may be estimated by extrapolation, or the extending of the curve beyond the last known period of production to show the most probable production values for the future.

Over a period of years the Crestmore plant of the Riverside Cement Co. has been supplied with limestone from the Chino limestone bed. The limestone bed dips about 40º and extends 1500 ft along the strike. Thickness of the bed is such that horizontal distance from footwall to hanging wall varies from 400 to 1200 ft. When the new room and pillar mining system was instituted the haulage units used for development were model C Tournarockers. Four of these diesel units were purchased with the idea of using them solely for development work since it was realized that they would have to be supplemented by additional, and perhaps larger haulers.

Of many physical parameters critical to design of grinding processes, impact of grinding media is among the most difficult to measure or predict. Yet impact of falling grinding balls, pebbles, or rods accomplishes the fine grinding essential to metallurgical recovery of most important minerals. Unfortunately, the same impacts that break ore fragments deform or crack grinding mill liners. A project was undertaken at Climax Molybdenum Company to measure impact forces in operating ball mills so that they might be used to calculate stresses in liner materials and be correlated with service performance of mill liner alloys. Towards that end, a method of measuring impact forces on ball mill liners using an instrumented grinding ball has been developed. Preliminary tests show that impact forces and contact stresses imposed on bare mill liners are quite high but are greatly reduced by cushioning when coarse ore particles are crushed between balls and liners. Compressive and shear stresses induced in liners not protected by coarse ore are so severe that deformation or minute subsurface cracking are inevitable in all but the small production grinding mills, regardless of mill liner alloy strength or hardness.

Heine's " blue test" for copper, as described by the authorities generally, calls for a set of standard colors; and there has been some discussion concerning the relative superiority, for this purpose, of sulphate and nitrate solutions. The whole matter evidently hinges on the preservation of the standard colors in well-stoppered bottles. The apparatus described by Q. L. Heath* cannot be much improved, when very accurate readings are required. The following method was devised for the purpose of doing away with preserved sets of standard colors, by making a fresh standard for each batch of assays. The solutions are prepared in the usual way, each ammoniacal solution being filtered into its separate bottle, and then filled up to the containing-mark and thoroughly mixed. A similar color-bottle, with an " S " etched upon it, to distinguish it from the other bottles, which are numbered to correspond with the samples, is kept to run the standard. About 150 C.C. of water is put into it, and then the amount of acid (sulphuric or nitric) present in each determination, followed by 30 C.C. of ammonia (s. g. 0.90), which should make the mixture strongly ammoniacal. The liquid is now made up almost to the containing-mark (200 c.c.), say within 1 C.C. The lowest assay is selected first and placed alongside the standard, which, at the beginning, contains no copper. A copper-solution is then dropped into the standard from a burette ; and after each addition the bottle is well shaken and compared with the assay-sample. This operation is repeated until the two shades match exactly, when the burette is read and the assay-result is calculated. The assay next in order of depth of color is now taken and treated in the same way, and so on, until the batch is completed. It

The use of the verb in this mood is not as common as formerly: at the time, for example, when the Bible was translated and the plays of Shakespeare were written. Nevertheless it is an essential part of literary English. In editing the 'Mining and Scientific Press' I do not insist upon the use of the subjunctive in articles that are contributed from the outside, but it is deemed proper in all our editorial writing. To speak plainly, the subjunctive is a mark of scholarship; it is ignored by those that are not particular in such matters, and unfortunately it is a source of perplexity to many that are entirely unfamiliar with the use of it. Therefore, as an editor, I think it well to allow the indicative mood to be used by contributors in sentences in which, to be strictly correct, the verbs should be in the subjunctive mood. The fact that most subjunctives are indistinguishable in form from indicatives is another cause of trouble to the uninitiated.* For example, the verbs in such phrases as "Suffice it to say", '(So help me God ", and "God save the King" are in the subjunctive. One reason why the subjunctive is becoming uncommon is the growing habit of expressing the subjunctive meaning by aid of auxiliary verbs that are coupled with the infinitive; thus: "It will sate to say" and "May God save the King". The subjunctive is common in subordinate clauses, and that is how it obtained its name, 'subjunctive', meaning

1. Introductory Remarks.—The Haile Gold Mine is in Lancaster county, South Carolina, 3 1/2 miles east of Kershaw station on the Charleston, Cincinnati and Chicago Railway. It was first opened about, the year 1832, and since that time has passed through various fortunes. Many different operations have been practiced here for extracting the gold : panning, grinding in Chilian mills or arrastras, stamping, the Designolle process, dry-crushing, and finally the Thies process of barrel-chlorination, which has now been in successful use for 2 1/2 years, and by which 36,000 tons of ore have been treated profitably. The Thies process is in brief the treatment of dead-roasted auriferous concentrates (pyrite, sometimes also chalcopyrite, as at the Phœnix mine, Cabarrus Co., N. Introduction Automatic control of primary ball mill circuits has received much attention over the past decade, primarily because its advantages ultimately can be translated into economic terms. Apart from such obvious benefits as improved product quality, increased throughput, and more stable operation, less direct benefits such as easier operation, more orderly maintenance scheduling, and timely management reports all can be realized with the application of modern automatic process control equipment and techniques. Software configurable digital computer-based control systems offer ease of change in control strategies. Occasional control strategy changes are necessary whenever control objectives change or circuit modifications occur. The dependency of control strategies on control objectives and circuit equipment to effect optimal circuit operation is an important, but often neglected issue. Because of the potential for even better control, research and development work continues. [See (Ulsoy & Sastry, 1981) and (Hulbert & Braae, 1981).] Some of the possibilities are discussed later in this presentation. A few preliminary remarks may be in order concerning the relationships among control objectives, control strategies, and circuit equipment. Generally accepted control objectives for primary ball mill circuits include: 1. Maintaining a desired percent solids in the mill. 2. Maintaining a desired measure of particle size distribution at the cyclone overflow. 3. Maximizing throughput. Control Objective I is a requirement for proper operation of the ball mill, especially if it is a grate mill. It concerns smooth movement of material through the mill. Control Objective 2 is a product specification - one of the requirements for proper flotation operation. Control Objective 3, an expression of the desire to get the most out of the circuit, is the easiest to evaluate in economic terms. It assumes that the processes downstream

The approximate production of petroleum in the various fields and for the country as a whole is shown in the following table, the figures for the later months of the year being estimated. Among the developments of the year may be mentioned the finding by the Standard Oil Co. of a small production, about 6290 bbl., at Aguas Blancas in the Province of Salta near the Bolivian border, and of about 88,000 bbl. at Lomitas, near Tartagal in the same province. The Government (Yaciementos Petroliferos Fiscales) in the last four months of the year also obtained about 6290 bbl, from Quebrada Galarce. .The oil found in Salta is of good grade and while the quantity is small great hopes of larger production are entertained. Shortly after production was begun at the Duval Sierrita concentrator in February 1970, it became evident that difficulties would be experienced in reaching the designed operating level of 72,000 stpd. Since the major restrictions to production resided in the reduction crushing system, a comprehensive program was initiated to evaluate and optimize all crusher parameters affecting production. Positive relationships were established between production rate and crusher power draught, mantle support pressure, crusher setting, and crusher throw. Other parameters evaluated were the effects of feed distribution, crusher speed, mantle and concave configuration, choke feeding, and ore type. In order to obtain maximum production, it was also imperative that the mechanical integrity of the crushers be improved. Therefore, redesign of nearly the entire crusher assemblage, including such items as the top shell, bushings, and the mantle hydraulic support system, was required. In addition, automatic control stategies were evaluated and detailed operating guidelines were established. As a result of this extensive crusher examination, the limitation on plant throughput has been shifted to the grinding section, and a monthly average production level of 86,000 stpd is currently achieved.
