C.: Papers of Collins, Vogt, DeLaunay, etc.-Mr. Collins tells us about facts in the veins of Cornwall that suggest secondary sulphide-enrichment is highly interesting; and I am free to confess that I have not studied the literature of that region as fully as I should have done. Nevertheless, even if it had been as familiar to me as it is to Mr. Collins, I should probably have hesitated to draw theoretical conclusions without having seen the mines myself; for the personal equation and the point of view of the observer play, perhaps, a larger part in the study of ore-deposits than in that of any other natural phenomena. One important purpose of my paper, and its publication at the time of the Washington meeting, was to call forth remarks from other geologists upon deposits with which they were personally familiar, or to lead them to re-examine such deposits with the idea of secondary enrichment in mind. Mr. Collins's remarks on Rio Tinto, which he has the advantage of personally knowing, are also interesting. With regard, however, to his suggestion-advanced as an apparent argument against our theory-that the re-precipitation of copper from cupric sulphate solution by pyrite can hardly take place there, since it would upset the commercial process, I would remark that, while he is undoubtedly right as to the fact, it does not militate against the reduction and re-precipitation of cupric sulphate in veins; since on the surface, as at Rio Tinto, there is free access of air, and consequently an excess of ferric sulphate, whereas in depth the ferric sulphate would have been mostly reduced to ferrous sulphate, and (there being no excess of acid to hold it in solution) the small amount of copper in the presence of an excess of iron sulphide would be precipitated either as sulphide or as native copper. To Professor Vogt's analogous remarks, that in his experience sulphuric acid is formed only in subordinate amount in the attack of sulphides by ferric sulphate, I would say that Dr.

THE -salt deposits of the Mississippi Embayment region present a problem of origin so genetically related to the larger problem of the stratigraphy and structure of the region that a discussion of the one necessarily involves or assumes an understanding of the other. For this reason, I shall summarize briefly our knowledge of this region, emphasizing the facts related to the subject of this paper. In so doing I shall make liberal use of the reports of the National and State surveys. Geographically that section of the United States known as the Mississippi Embayment region represents a great V-shaped area, extending from near Cairo, Ill., to the Gulf of Mexico, and including Louisiana, eastern Texas, all that part of Arkansas bordering the Ouachita and Ozark mountains, western Tennessee, Mississippi, and a part of Alabama. This great section Professor Harris has described as structurally a pitching trough, its medial line being well represented by the Mississippi River. Outcropping along the border of this area are the Cretaceous and Tertiary formations, unconformably laid down on the hard Paleozoic rock sheets that show more or less plication, deformation, and faulting, depending upon their proximity to the nearby major uplifts. East and west of the Mississippi River the Cretaceous and Tertiary beds dip river- and coastward at angles greater than the slope of the land. "Waters entering along the outcropping edges of the Tertiaries and Cretaceous and following bedding planes southward are soon thousands of feet beneath the surface." As the sedimentation of the region progressed, faulting and slips occurred along planes of pre-Cretaceous weakness. Whether these movements were genetically related to the loading of this V-shaped area, as Professor Harris seems to think, is a question still to be settled. The accompanying map, Fig. 1, was taken from Bulletin No. 7 of the Louisiana Geological Survey. It shows the regional distribution of the salines, as well as an alignment of the domes, which has been assumed to indicate faulting.

IT IS impossible to speak in exact terms of the effect that selective flotation has had, is having, and may have on the State of Utah. Its results enter into the economic structure of the state in so many ways and its ramifications are so widespread, that every line of industry is affected. Some effects can be definitely determined; others can be reasonably approximated; but the effect as a whole can not be set out in exact figures. Utah is essentially a mining state; mining is its basic industry and always will be. Agriculture, equally a basic industry, and of course, equally vital, can be practiced on only 6 per cent. of the 85,000 square miles of its area. It follows, therefore, that the economic future of this state depends upon a development of its natural resources. About 6 or 7 years ago, the mining industry in Utah was at a low ebb. This condition was caused partly by postwar conditions and other temporary causes, but prevailed also, which was most important, because the direct-smelting ores of the state were being rapidly exhausted and the cost of treatment of complex ores was almost prohibitive. Furthermore, the wet concentration of low-grade ores was unsatisfactory and did not result in producing a good smelting product. On visualizing this situation, one of the large smelting companies in the valley had the courage, ability and faith to develop and expand the principles involved in selective flotation of complex ores. This example has been followed by other smelting and reduction companies and the result has changed the entire aspect of the mining industry in Utah. The utilization of the zinc in the low-grade, lead-zinc-silver ores was the principal problem to be solved. The average yearly production from the State of Utah for the 10 years beginning 1914 and ending 1923, was something less than 10,000 tons of zinc concentrates. This period includes the world war, when abnormal prices stimulated production. In 1924, selective flotation began to be practiced on a considerable scale, replacing concentration by gravity and bulk flotation which had been used generally until this time. GOLD MOVEMENT ON SURFACE OF AURIFEROUS COPPER WHEN LATTER IS SUBJECTED TO OXIDATION SOME years ago the writer's attention was called to the fact that rolling-mill scales from auriferous copper do not have the gold content proportional to the gold contained in the copper from which they are derived. I So, later, he made a few simple experiments, which are described herewith. In: order to test the gold movement on the changing surface of a copper plate under the influence of oxidation, plates 6 in. by 8 in. by I in. (15.2 cm. by 20.3 cm. by 2.5 cm.) of converter copper, refined, of 99.29 per cent. purity, and leaded copper with a content of 95.65 per cent. copper, were obtained. Ten cuts were made through the thickness of the plates along the longitudinal center and the silver and gold content ascertained in each of the 10 samples in both plates, as shown in the accompanying illustration. The assay results, recorded in Tables 1 and 2, show that the gold distribution is relatively uniform in both plates, while silver has greater variations, especially in the leaded plate. The plates subjected to oxidation were placed in a red-hot muffle for about 2 hr., two small scorifiers being used as supports. Arranged alongside each other, they nearly filled the width of the muffle, and so were practically under equal conditions of heat and draft. The accurate observance of the time was not possible, however, because of other work, but the time of the exposure of each plate in a pair was identical. At the end of each period, each plate was plunged into water and completely freed of scale, which was carefully collected, dried, weighed, and analyzed. Samples of the plates had also been taken of the molten metal and duly analyzed. Table 3 contains the analytical data for the two plates and their several sheets, or layers, of oxide scales. AT the Wednesday morning session on Mine Ven-tilation, D. Harrington's report of the committee on metal mine ventilation was presented. He said the only paper which had been received was one from Nevada, although a number had been promised. Mr. Harrington gave instances from his experience where it had cost less to operate ventilating fans during idle periods in mines than the expense of replacing timber, which was destroyed by fungus during the period when the mines were not ventilated. He referred particu-larly to a metal mine in Michigan and a copper mine in the Southwest where this condition had been found in parallel tunnels, one of which had been ventilated after work had ceased and the other had not been. Mr. Harrington also referred to the fumes after blasting operations in mines operating in large bodies of sul-fide ores. By installing mechanical ventilating devices, these conditions had been greatly improved. He re-ferred also to a recent instance where an ignition of sulfide ore-dust had resulted in an explosion which killed three men and burned a fourth severely. Methane had been found in some gold mines and also in tunnels for city water-supply, and as a result coal-mine inspec-tion methods had been adopted. In one instance the contractor had changed from 40 per cent gelatine ex-plosive to a permissible explosive. A daily gas sample was taken. Nitrogen had been found in some of the mines, and CO, gas had been found in some of the Cripple Creek mines where a fan had been installed to maintain pres-sure on the working faces. It was found by experiment that the oxygen was absorbed by the rock particles, which led to a relatively greater percentage of CO. Coal-mine splitting ventilating methods had been used in some places. Miners' consumption had been made compensable in Ontario, and there is a large threat-ened charge now standing against metal mine oper-ators in the Province of Ontario. Mr. Harrington re-ferred to some of the literature, especially the recent book on ventilation by W. S. Weeks of the University of California. He suggested, however, that a better title for the book would have been "The Physics and Mechanics of Metal Mine Ventilation," since it was especially valuable in this field.

Peru produced approximately 17,466,620 bbl., of oil during 1937, or slightly less than the record high of 17,593,700 bbl. established during 1936. As in 1936, the entire output of the country was derived from the La Brea-Parinas, Lobitos-Restin and Zorritos fields in the northwestern part of the country. Outside of the proven areas, drilling was 'continued by the Peruvian Government in the northern province of Tumbes on the reserved zone at Zorritos. Drilling was carried out on three locations, two of which are understood to have been abandoned during the year. In southern Peru, further attention was given by Government engineers to the Pusi and Saman districts and plans are being worked out for the commencement of drilling operations in the near future in the vicinity of Pirin. Activities in the montaiia region in eastern Peru were continued by the Compafiia Petrolera El Ganso Azul. This company acquired the interest of the Selden Breck Co., and holds some 90,000 acres along the Pachitea River a few miles above its confluence with the Ucayali. During the year, the preparation of a landing place, the cutting of a 12-km. (71/2-mile) road from the river to the drill site, and the construction of a camp were undertaken. Equipment for drilling on this company's concessions has already arrived in South America. La Brea-Parinas Estate.—Production of crude oil on the La Brea-Parinas Estate of the International Petroleum Company Limited amounted to 14,722,754 bbl. during 1937, a decrease of 403,736 bbl. from the all-time high reached during 1936. The total production from 1890 to Dec. 31,1937, was 178,390,767 bbl. During 1937, a total of 141,653 ft. was drilled, 129,516 ft. in new wells and 12,137 in deepening existing wells. In all, 57 wells were completed, 47 of which produced oil, 2 were gas wells and 8 dry. holes. Twenty-nine wells were cleaned out or deepened during the year. The average depth of new wells completed during 1937 was 2367 ft. compared with 1984 ft. for the new wells completed during 1936. There was an increased use of rotary tools during the year and this method is now used to a greater extent than the cable-tool method, which formerly predominated. The sampling and estimating of the orebodies in the mines of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., at Butte, have been made a part of the work of the geological department. The wisdom of this assignment is apparent, considering the organization of that department, the nature of its records, and the scope of its regular work. In the first place, the district is divided into units of two or three mines each and a geologist is assigned to each group. His trips to all the working places are frequent and he follows the mining operations closely. His notes are graphic and detailed. In the office, he posts his notes on the standard maps and sections and on special maps for correlation purposes. With the approval of the chief or assistant chief geologist, he recommends development work underground and watches its progress. This gives the geological department a precise knowledge of the character of each orebody. Sampling is done by one or two samplers at each mine working under a chief sampler stationed in the geological office. The chief sampler has access to all the office maps and is in frequent consultation with the geologists; his instructions to the samplers are issued with the approval of the chief or assistant chief geologist. Not only is it important that the geologic information be used to direct the sampling but the reports of the samplers and the records kept by their chief are useful to the geologist, who needs them in his work of estimating ore reserves and deciding on recommendations for development work. The sampler, moreover, is at the mine every day and makes a daily report, which keeps the geologist in close touch with the progress of development work. The sampler is attached to the mine office and thus comes under the jurisdiction of the operating department. MANY of the magnesite ores of the western part of the United States contain such large amounts of silica and hydrous silicate minerals that the value of the ores is either low or nominal. Expensive and carefully controlled mining methods are necessary to prevent excessive dilution of the higher grade ores by introduction in mining of small pieces of the hanging walls or footwalls of the deposit. This difficulty is further complicated by the various states of decomposition of the country rock of the deposits in which many of the ores occur. The problem the authors attempted to solve arose from a request to float an impure magnesite containing varying proportions of siliceous gangue with calcium carbonate. The ore is normally enclosed in-serpen-tine masses, somewhat decomposed, and in mining it wall rock is inci-dentally added, so that variable amounts of siliceous material occur in the samples. The silica, alumna, and iron oxide are so closely associated with the magnesium carbonate in the magnesite that ordinary mechanical separation at coarse mesh sizes is of no avail. It is well known that calcium carbonate can be floated by suitable reagents, therefore it seemed reasonable to suppose that magnesium carbonate minerals would behave in a similar manner, but experimental trial proved that this supposition was unfounded. Therefore the first step in the problem was to find out what differences of behavior there were between magnesium and calcium carbonates under flotation conditions, or when suspended in water. In water at 18° C. magnesium carbonate is slightly more soluble than calcium carbonate; in fact; MgCO3 is soluble to the extent of 0.0106 grams in 100 c.c. of water at 18° C. and CaCO3 to the extent of 0.0013 grams. However, magnesium carbonate in water gradually changes to the basic carbonates of a composition (3MgCO3.Mg(OH)23H20) or (4MgCO3.Mg(OH)25H20), depending upon conditions, and calcium carbonate to calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2. This study of the relationship of the accumulation and drainage of oil to the structural conditions in the Wilmington oil field is presented with the hope that the data contained herein will aid in efficient exploita-tion of other fields where similar conditions exist. It is also probable that the conditions observed in this field will enable accurate comparisons of various well-spacing programs as to efficiency of production and ultimate recovery. Apreliminary investigation has been carried out on the annealing behavior of explosively deformed copper as compared to that of conventionally deformed copper, using hardness, stored energy, and the sharpening of X-ray spots on Debye rings as the measures of annealing. Some metallographic observations were also made. Two purities of copper were studied. The first was tough pitch copper obtained as a small piece from the guard ring of a sample explosively deformed to approximately 500 kbars.* The second consisted of mentedand deformed these samples quite badly so that only a few small fragments were available for the annealing experiments. As a result, little in the way of quantitatively significant data was gleaned from the measurements. However, several important qualitative differences between the annealing of explosively deformed and conventionally deformed copper have been observed. It is these effects which are described in this report. Fig. 1 presents the results of hardness and stored energy measurements during the annealing of the high-purity copper after explosive and after conventional deformation. The data for the conventionally deformed copper were taken from the work of Gordon;' in this copper it is evident that most of the stored energy is released concommittantly with the hardness drop. As shown in orddon's' investigation, these effect:: are definitely associated with recrystal-lization. In the case of the explosively deformed copper, on the other hand, a large fraction of the stored energy is released before any appreciable hardness change takes place. At 160°C about 40 pct, and at 170°C about. 80 pct, of the stored energy appears to have been released prior to the onset of softening, i.e., undoubtedly prior to recrystallization. In view of the facts that the hardness and energy measurements were made on separate samples and that there is reason to suspect that the intensity of the explosive deformation from sample to sample may not have been uniform, a check run was carried out in which both energq release and hardness changes were measured cnn the same sample. The results of this run, shown in Fig. 2, confirm the conclusion that much of the stored energy is released before the hardness begins to change appreciably. In an effort to obtain some idea of the activation energy associated with the early release of energy, a single callorimetric sample was annealed in two steps, first at 149.5"C and then at 159.5"C, Fig. 3.

This paper deals primarily with the advantages realized from the adoption of methods more suitable than those previously used. The improvements noted include: (1) modification of practice in shrinkage stoping, (2) use of sublevel caving over grizzlies, (3) improved haulage and loading, (4) use of contract wages wherever possible. The Washington mine is on Jonestown Hill, one mile south of Oxford, in northwestern New Jersey. It is producing 16,000 tons of concentrates a month, which are being shipped to the Alan Wood Steel Company's furnaces at Swedeland, Pennsylvania. History The first settlement in this region is reported to have been in 1735, and the magnetite ores were recognized immediately. The first furnace, built in 1741, began operation in 1743. During the Revolutionary War the output was chiefly used for making cannon balls, which, owing to the sympathies of the community, without doubt found their way into the hands of the British. This old furnace is still standing. Several important veins were soon developed, including the Martin, Strayley, McKinley, Adelaide, Welsh and Lanning. Mining was carried to a depth corresponding to the capacity of the pumps available. When these became inadequate, the workings were abandoned, and another vein was opened up. The Washington vein was probably discovered about 1850, and the first shaft started in 1854. In 1879, William H. Scranton made the first complete magnetic survey of the district and serious exploration of the deposit was begun. Rather indifferent success attended the earlier efforts of the many companies that attempted to mine and smelt the ore. In 1929 the property was leased by the Warren Foundry and Pipe Co. to the present operators, and the modification of practice then inaugurated is described in this paper. Geology These veins, like most eastern deposits of magnetite, are formed from, or are contemporaneous with, pegmatite intrusions into a gneissic country rock. I. INTRODUCTION We are aware that as a general rule zinc and lead deposits located by the Mediterranean Sea contain important proportions of oxidized ores of lead and zinc (cerussite, anglesite, smithsonite, hemimorphite). Although their economical significance is decreasing in favor of totally sulphurous ores*, la Societe Miniere et Metallurgique de Penarroya and its subsidiaries are still operating four small oxidized ore-bodies in Morocco, Spain, France, and Italy (see Figure 1). Not all of these deposits contain exclusively oxidized lead and zinc ores but also sulphides such as galena, sphalerite, and pyrite. However, the very presence of the oxidized ores gives the treatment methods their characteristics and it is bearing this in mind that we think the description of these four mills worthwhile. Flotation remains the basic process. It uses sulphurization in alkaline medium and long chain xanthate in order to concentrate lead minerals (amylxanthate) and fatty amines (sterarylamine acetate) to concentrate zinc minerals.

VENTILATION of the Butte mines has long been a rather difficult problem because of the natural high temperature of the rock. With increase in mining depth, higher rock temperatures have been encountered, and this has caused a constantly growing demand for more effective ventilation measures. During recent years the hazards of dust in mine air have been more clearly recognized, and have necessitated the adoption of dust-prevention methods. To meet these ventilation problems in the mines of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., a mines ventilation department was organized in 1918, to act under the direction of the general superintendent of mines. At the present time, under normal operating conditions, the force employed includes the ventilation engineer, two chief assistant ventilation engineers and eight assistant ventilation engineers. The activities of the department are, briefly: (1) planning and supervising operation of the general ventilation system; (2) planning and supervising the operation of dust-prevention measures, together with dust sampling and related microscopic work for the quantitation of the dust samples and determination of particle-size distribution; (3) the design and development of air- conditioning methods to meet present exceptionally severe temperature conditions and in anticipation of future requirements. To a large extent the technical features of the ventilation methods have been described in earlier papers by the author. This paper is written mainly to summarize past accomplishments bearing most closely on health and safety, with a somewhat more detailed account of the dust- prevention measures that have been developed comparatively recently. FACILITATING FLOW OF AIR As a basic requirement for the safety of the men, all ventilation plans are subject to a ruling that the main operating shafts must be maintained as inlet air courses. Under this condition, a safe, fresh-air escapeway is assured if a fire occurs within the mine, and the shaft is available as a base for fire-fighting operations. With the advent of the Interstate Highway Pro- gram, many problems have been encountered in the application of highway design standards to topography, particularly rock cut design. A rigid application of slope ratios with little respect to rock type, dip, foliation, structure and height of cut face is a problem. Generally a slope ratio of ½ : 1 or 63º for shallow cuts and 1/3: 1 or 71º in deeper cuts are used in Connecticut. The deepest cut face constructed recently was greater than 185 ft. With cuts of this size, rock fall and stability become a problem, and a way to reduce the problem is to construct a stable face initially. A search of the literature indicates that adequate information on the construction of stable rock slopes is not available. A major highway contract was awarded in 1962 to Savin Brothers, Inc., in which line drilling on 6-in. centers was required in many portions of the contract where the cut was greater than 60 ft and one or more benches were to be constructed. From the start of the project many variations were attempted regarding slope hole spacing and distribution of explosives in the holes. Rock ranged from a competent granitic gneiss to an incompetent soft graphitic schist. Generally, the roadway alignment was roughly normal to the strike of the foliation having a dip of ± 60º. An important factor affecting construction of rock slopes was the existence of intersecting joints and faults. The spacing used in less competent rock was about one ft on center. Loading of holes was purposely varied. As competency of the rock increased, hole spacing was also increased. Thus, on a different project in similar rock, spacing was kept at 4 ft.

Discussion of the paper of B. H. Dunshee, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 30, August, 1913, pp. 1511 to 1531. GEORGE E. MOULTHROP, Butte, Mont.:-The recording for the first time by Mr. Dunshee, in a readily usable form, of the various systems of square-set framing applied in the Butte district is a valuable contribution to mining information. The many different methods of framing employed, due to the individual ideas of superintendents and foremen of segregated companies, have given full opportunity to determine the best framing for the conditions as found in these mines, and the final adoption of a system uniform for all the mines has come about through a study of these various methods and an experience covering a period of many years. The sawed 10 by 10 in. and 12 by 12 in. timbers undoubtedly give the best satisfaction; and the style of framing the sawed timber that under all conditions has given the best practical results is that used in the Anaconda group and other mines, described and recommended by Mr. Dunshee. In this framing the posts have a horn 2 in. high and 6 in. square, the cap end having dimensions of 3 by 6 in. Instead of the framed girt shown in the drawings of the Anaconda group, the 6 by 10 in. girt adopted at some other mines, which fits into the cap and post framing with no other preparation than cutting the timber to the necessary length, fills all the necessary requirements for strength and affects a material saving in timber and labor. This, as Mr. Dunshee states, is without doubt the type of framing which would be adopted as a standard for 10 by 10 in. sawed timbers if sawed timber sets were to be used in the future generally. But saw-timber for the mines was becoming scarce and expensive, and round timber for the square sets furnished an alternative which provided, at greatly reduced cost, material which in every way supplied the requirements of the mining conditions. The use of the round timber with a satisfactory framing makes available a conveniently located and large source of supply which up to this time has served no useful industrial purpose. Particularly is this true of small timber, which is still standing in great quantities in the forests where the trees more desirable for commercial purposes have already been cut and marketed.

Isothermal sections of the pseudo-ternary carbide systems TiC-VC-ZrC, TaC-VC-ZrC, and NbC-VC-ZrC have been examined. The sections contain an inverted U shaped two-phase field whose maximum extent is 77 molecular pct for Tic, 64 pct for TaC, and 51 pct for NbC. lsoparametric lines were determined which show the curvature of the single-phase field and the direction of tie lines in the two-phase field. It was not possible to show any relationship between atom size and the extent of the two-phase field. REVIOUS work' on the solubility relationship of several pairs of refractory cubic monocarbides from the group Tic, ZrC, VC, NbC, and TaC has shown that, with the exception of the system VC-ZrC, they all form continuous series of solid solutions. It was demonstrated that the limited solubility in the case of VC-ZrC system was primarily a question of the size factor, the size difference between vanadium and zirconium being greater than the limiting value of about 15 pet. It is interesting to consider the results of combining these isomorphous carbides in groups of three and to determine the isothermal section of the pseudo-ternary diagram at, for instance, 2000°C, a temperature that will assure an equilibrium structure in a reasonable length of time. In the ternary systems where the three pairs form complete solid solution series, it is probable that the isothermal ternary section would be a single- phase field, although this is not necessarily the case. However, if one pair of carbides has a very limited solubility, then there must be a two-phase field of some extent, and it is the purpose of the present work to examine the extension of this field and to determine if it can be related to the nature of the third carbide. This condition is fulfilled if the VC-ZrC pair, which has only limited solubility, is combined with Tic, TaC, or NbC. The relative sizes of the metal atoms undoubtedly play a role in the extent of the single-phase field, and the values obtained from the pure carbides, assuming close-packing between metal and carbon atoms and a carbon atom diameter of 1.54A, are

Alunite [KA13(S04)2(OH)6] is a promising non-bauxitic aluminum resource, the domestic reserves of which are estimated to be 800 x 106 tons at 35 percent alunite. The major gangue mineral associated with alunite is quartz. The thermochemical process that has been developed for treatment of this ore does not provide for the initial removal of gangue prior to processing. In this regard, it may be desirable to concentrate the ore to gain significant technical and economic advantages. Experimental results indicate the effectiveness of an oleic acid flotation technique and exemplify the problems encountered in fine particles processing. These results show that the quality of separation studied as a function of temperature, collector addition, and depressant addition is dependent on the degree of liberation achieved during size reduction. At coarse grinds the quality of separation was limited by the presence of locked particles while for finer grinds where more extensive liberation is achieved, better separations were obtained. The degree of liberation for each size interval was determined by an SEM/energy dispersive x-ray technique and found to be independent of the extent of size reduction, suggesting that liberation occurs by indiscriminate fracture and not by detachment. Up to 89 percent liberation was realized for a minus 400 mesh grind. Under these circumstances, the quality of separation appears not only to be limited by the remaining locked particles, but, also, by contamination of the alunite concentrate with fine quartz gangue (< 2µm). The best separation for the minus 400 mesh grind was a rougher recovery of 88 percent with a grade of 65% alunite at 50°C.

Edward Thomas (U.S. Bureau of Mines, Washington, D. C.)—This excellent article on an ingenious and successful installation of wooden rock bolts loses much of its effectiveness through an attempt by the authors to establish the general adaptability of this type of support. Possibly because they have only local experience as a guide, they imply erroneously in the first paragraph that the Bureau of Mines has been opposed to wooden bolting, although later in the article reference is made to a Bureau publication on the subject. In 1947 the Bureau of Mines decided to sponsor experiments in roof bolting in coal mines because the experience of the St. Joseph Lead Co. had indicated that this type of roof support appeared to be a roof-fall accident-prevention measure that might be adopted and also effect economies in operating cost. Justification for this belief has been borne out, particularly in coal mining. This program has been carried out under the following general program: 1—The Roof Control Section of the Bureau of Mines has advocated and initiated underground experiments under controlled conditions with many different ideas related to rock bolting since 1947. In no instance has cooperation in developing an idea been refused, no matter how ridiculous it may have seemed at first glance, if it has been requested by a mining company. 2—The Bureau of Mines has no police powers over the selection of roof-support devices and seeks none. 3—At the request of an operator, the Bureau of Mines will make comparative tests on various types of bolts underground and will submit resultant data for the operator&apos;s consideration. 4—Wherever possible, the Bureau publicizes successful installations, so that others may benefit from this experience; however, it is careful not to discriminate between manufacturers of bolts or bolt-installation equipment. Unsuccessful experiments probably should also be publicized, but from a practical standpoint it is usually not feasible. In other words, the role of the Roof Control Section of the Bureau is in line with the original purpose for which the Bureau was first organized: to serve industry through gathering, analyzing, and disseminating factual data. It would seem to be logical that the starting point for any experimentation on roof bolts in coal mines should be the time-proved practice of the

UNDERGROUND fires have been common in the mines of the United Verde Copper Co. for the past 22 years. The first fire started in the 300 Hampton stope in the fall of 1894, following a cave in that orebody. The soft and highly pyritic nature of the ores is responsible for most of these fires. Since ore characteristics, methods of mining and ventilation, have an important influence on mine fires, they will be described in this paper. Orebodies The ores are mostly chalcopyrite except on the upper levels where considerable chalcocite, black oxides and other secondary minerals occur. The orebodies are in the form of lenses and vary in size. Some are small, while others are several hundred feet in length by a hundred or more feet in width. These orebodies extend, in some cases, from the surface to the lowest levels of the mine and usually at a steep angle of inclination. There are three different classes of ores, classified in accordance with the gangue rock. The copper in all cases, except as above specified, is in the form of chalcopyrite. The largest and most important of these reserves are in a pyrite gangue. Next in order of importance are the schist ores and lastly the quartz porphyries. The pyrite, locally termed iron ores, average from 30 to 42 per cent. sulphur. The schist and quartz, porphyries vary from 3 to 25 per cent. sulphur. Mining Methods All the orebodies were worked by the overhand square-set method of mining prior to 1908; since then the cut-and-fill, shrinkage and mill-hole systems have been largely employed. But 15 per cent. of the total tonnage now extracted is from timbered stopes. Most off this is from the upper levels where the ore is soft, heavy and more or less broken to the surface. Large reserves of these ores are being conserved for more efficient methods of mining.

With the expansion of open pit operations, belt conveyors are going to be used in the 13 608 to 18 144 t/h (15,000 to 20,000 stph) capacity range, which calls for a review of some of the horsepower calculation methods. This paper presents methods (based on German research data, field tests and theoretical considerations) for the evaluation of the Ky factor in the CEMA formula for belt conveyors of large carrying capacity, which fall beyond the limits of the data given in tables in the CEMA book. (The CEMA limits are 407 N\\m (300 lb ft) and Tave = 7.3 Mg (16,000 lb). At these large loads, the impression resistance of the belting on the idlers plays a major role, which in turn influences the magnitude of the drive horse power required. An example will illustrate the order of magnitude difference of the horsepower values obtained by using a conventional calculation method and the suggested method, as well as the beneficcia1 influence of the 4-roll idler in comparison to the standard 3-roll unit for a large caving capacity belt conveyor. This paper concerns itself with the analysis of the resistance to motion of belt conveyors, emphasizing the evaluation of the frictional resistance to motion due to load and belt pressure on the idlers and the flexing resistance of the belt and material when passing over the idlers. In the case of long and heavily loaded belt conveyors, the aforementioned resistances reach extremely high values calling for close analysis of the phenomena, presently not calculable with normally used formulas. This paper establishes correlation between experimental and empirical data presenting practical formulas a tool for the designer of high-capacity belt conveyors. The application of the formula is illustrated in an example in the Appendix.
