When the Age of Machinery was suddenly thrust upon civilization about the beginning of the 19th century, an unprecedented demand for mineral resources sprang up. This demand brought about the rapid development of the known ore deposits and the discovery of such other deposits as could be encountered by energetic and canny prospectors. Thus in the countries now reasonably accessible nearly all orebodies have been located except those which are totally concealed even from the eyes and "senses " of experienced and expert prospectors. The high rate of exhaustion of known ore deposits and the necessity of looking farther and farther ahead for raw materials as a matter of insurance on the stupendous capital outlays involved in mining, development, and conversion operations, have resulted in exceptional activity in three different fields of effort. The first is purely geographic. Prospectors are now penetrating the few hitherto inaccessible regions in the hope of stumbling upon exposed ore deposits or locating visible indications of their presence. The second is chemical. Industrial chemists and metallurgists are seeking to facilitate the exploitation of lower grade ores or to find methods of recovering valuable metals from common substances. In the third field of effort lie the activities of the economic geologist and the mining engineer, who endeavor to locate concealed ore deposits which would remain hidden from the prospector no matter how expert or conscientious he might be. Obviously the task which such a man must face is both exacting and indefinite, and the tools which he has heretofore been permitted to bring to it are, for the most part, abstract—a knowledge of certain fundamental principles and processes involved in the origin, occurrence, structure, and distribution of deposits of natural resources and of the rocks which form the environments of those deposits; and a process of reasoning by analogy supplemented by the use of the diamond drill, or such artificial exposure as the test pit, trench, shaft, or tunnel.

For over 200 years meerschaum has been a significant item of trade between the Near East and countries to the west. Best-known for its use in making smoking pipes and cigar and cigarette holders, it is also used in making a variety of decorative and ornamental items. It is easily carved, and is given an attractive, lustrous finish by rubbing. No published specifications are known, but compact form, purity, uniform whiteness or light color, and uniform, porous texture appear to be requisites. Fig. I a shows the appearance of a piece of crude meerschaum from Turkey; Fig. lb a carved item; and Fig. lc, d, and e show the fibrous and porous texture as revealed by the scanning electron microscope. Neither a major industrial mineral nor a precious stone, meerschaum nevertheless holds a record of long-and continuing-association with art and personal affairs of man. It is also a mineral to which modem methods of exploration and production probably could be profitably applied. An interesting account of the preparation and use of meerschaum in the early part of this century is given by Sterrett (1907). Geology and Mining Mineralogy Meerschaum is recognized now to be the compact variety of sepiolite, the claylike variety of which is one of the minerals included in the chapter on clays. The word meerschaum, from the German meaning "sea foam," was in earlier times used synonymously with sepiolite, a word of Greek origin suggestive of the resemblance of the compact variety-then the only variety known-to cuttlefish bone. At one time meerschaum was used as the commercial name, and sepiolite for the scientific name. However, to think of meerschaum as the name by which sepiolite is known commercially is no longer valid, in view of the recent emergence of the earthy variety as a competitor of bentonite and other clay materials. Present tendency is to restrict the term meerschaum to the compact variety, and to use the term sepiolite as a more general name to include both the compact and earthy varieties. This is the terminology followed in this publication. Meerschaum typically is white to light gray, has a hardness of 2 to 2 ½ , conchoidal to irregular fracture, and specific gravity varying with porosity from about 2 to less than 1. The composition is somewhat variable,- but is near that determined by Schaller (1936) for sepiolite as 2MgO.3SiO2.4H2O. A more modern for mula based on X-ray determination of the crystal structure is given by Caillére and Henin (1961) as (Site) (Mg9)030(OH)6(0H2)46H20. The reason for the firm, compact nature of meerschaum, in contrast with the earthy variety of sepiolite, is not fully understood. It may be due to the presence of a very minor amount of some bonding material such as silica. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) photographs of a specimen from Turkey (Figs. lc-le) indicate that the meerschaum is composed predominantly, if not entirely, of crystalline fibers which merge into sheetlike forms in a complex, intertwined mass. Detailed X-ray and crystal structure data, as well as some data on thermal stability range, are given by Caillère and Hénin (1961) for the sepiolite family of minerals. Mode of Occurrence and Origin Most authors have attributed the origin of meerschaum to alteration of serpentine or other magnesian minerals. The occurrence in alluvium and other surficial deposits does not necessarily indicate that the alteration was supergene. In fact, hydrothermal origin appears more likely for some deposits, though not for all.

Values of rock surface energy (i. e. energy required to form a unit area of new surface) are useful for interpretation of drilling and fracturing phenonema This paper describes the adaptation of a cleavage technique (splitting of large rocks under controlled conditions) for measuring surface energies. Values of surface energy obtained at room temperature and at low crack extension rates are reported for a variety of sandstones and limestones. Elastic moduli, tensile strengths and compressive strengths of the samples are also reported. The values of Young's moduli (measured in bending) are relatively low, probably because of the low stress levels imposed. Measured values of surface energy me generally higher than anticipated and probably reflect inelastic yielding near the extending tip of the crack. INTRODUCTION The technology of petroleum production includes many operations such as drilling and fracturing, which involve rock breakage. One of the fundamental properties of a rock needed to fully explain breaking and fracturing phenomena is the surface energy (i. e. the energy required to form a unit area of new surface). In this paper we describe an adaptation of the cleavage method (splitting of the rock under controlled conditions) to utilize large rock samples. Application of the theory of elastic cantilever beams and the Griffith concept of mechanical stability permits the calculation of surface energies from simple measurements. Values of surface energies obtained at room temperature on dry samples and at low crack extension rates are reported for a variety of sandstones and limestones. Measured values of Young's Moduli, compressive strengths and tensile strengths are also reported for the rocks. THE EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Equipment designed to cleave large rock samples is shown on Fig. 1. This equipment consists essentially of two steel blocks cemented to a rock sample and forced apart with a steel rod. A ball joint and a pivot prevent bending stresses in the rod. A differential thread arrangement permits the rod to advance only 0.012 in./revolution of the driving nut. The axial force in the rod is measured with type FA-50-12 Baldwin Lima Hamilton strain gauges and a BLH type 20 strain gauge reader. Separation of the blocks is measured with a Starrett 656617 dial gauge. The massive nature and design of the equipment minimize the amount of elastic energy stored in the steel parts as the stress in the rod is increased. This will permit the rock to split under controlled conditions as will become clear later. Fig. 2 shows a sketch of the rock sample during cleavage. Guide slots are cut longitudinally along the rock sample as suggested by Berry.1 An initiating slot is also cut across the top of the block to a depth of 1 to 2 in. During cleavage, elastic energy is stored in the flexed beams of rock of length C. If the length of steel rod L is held constant and the crack extends in length, then the elastic potential energy stored in the rock decreases. However, surface energy must be supplied as the crack extends in length. Griffith6 has proposed the following criteria for mechanical stability. The crack will extend as long as the potential energy available is greater than the surface energy required. However, the crack will stop extending when the change in potential energy with change in crack length is just equal to the change in surface energy with change in crack length. See Eq. 1.

METALLURGISTS have used borax as a fluxing agent traditionally, but until recently elemental boron has played an insignificant role as an alloying element. Neither the metal nor its compounds have been regarded as important metallurgical materials and there is a surprising lack of knowledge concerning their metallurgical behavior. The new applications to steelmaking of both boron and borates, which arose in part from wartime incentives and restrictions, have been seriously handicapped by this lack of data. For example, rasorite, a naturally occurring sodium borate, has been shown to be an effective substitute for aluminum as a ladle deoxidizer in rimming steels.1 Likewise, the effectiveness of boron as an alloying agent has been demonstrated, 2,3 giving deep hardening when used in restricted amounts. The exploitation of both of these uses has been retarded by the difficulty of attaining suitable metallurgical control. Recognizing that the most important information required was a knowledge of the equilibrium between boron and oxygen dissolved in liquid iron, Gurry4 calculated this relation from the best thermal data available. However, estimates of the entropy of melting of boron, the activity coefficient of boron in liquid iron and the activity coefficient of B203 in slag were involved, and experimental work on this problem was obviously desirable. The experiments to be described were planned to establish the boron-oxygen relations in liquid iron and to demonstrate at the same time the ferroborate slag compositions in equilibrium with various amounts of oxygen in liquid iron. Accordingly, slags containing varying proportions of iron and boron oxides were held in contact with molten iron, and samples of both slag and metal were analyzed. The limitations upon the accuracy of the data will be considered, but in a practical sense the oxygen levels that can be attained in iron by iron borate slags, and the amounts of boron in iron at these oxygen levels were established. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE No entirely suitable refractory was found for the mixtures of iron oxide and boron oxide used as slags. Crucibles of silica, magnesia, Ramix, beryllia, and zirconia were all tried unsuccessfully. The most satisfactory method discovered for handling them was the rotating-crucible technique, which creates a parabolic crucible of liquid iron 5,6 Even this was not entirely successful, for at steelmaking temperatures (1600°C.) the slags had such a low surface tension that they crept up to the refractory and slowly dissolved it. These difficulties made it impossible to maintain a constant slag composition for an unlimited period of time. However, by using the rotating

Production equal to or greater than open-hole completions is possible through perforated completions if the flow paths throughout the perforations are free of obstructions.' Previous investigations have indicated that, in some cases, maximum productivity is not obtained due to plugging of the perforations with debris from the wellbore fluid and/or debris from the perforating process. Control of wellbore fluid and proper well completion techniques are very important in the elimination of perforation plugging.' Selection of properly designed perforating equipment also is quite important for maximum well productivity. Studies made with the use of the perforation flow laboratory, in which perforating tests are run under simulated well conditions, have shown that perforation plugging occasionally occurs. Plugs in perforations result from various causes. One of the contributors to plugging that can be controlled by the perforating device is the slug or carrot resulting from jet perforating. This condition has undergone extensive study, and previous developments have resulted in a decrease in carrot size—but not in complete elimination. It was felt that, if a method of completely eliminating the carrot could be found (with charge performance equal or better than previously obtained), a significant contribution would have been made. Such a charge has been developed and is reviewed in this paper. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS OF CARROT ELIMINATION There are several popular theories of how a shaped charge jet is formed."," One of these is the hydrodynamic theory, wherein the liner is treated as a fluid under the impact of the explosive forces. Another is the spalling theory, where the interaction of shock waves in the liner causes small particles to be torn from the inner surface of the liner and projected at high velocity toward a common focal line to form the jet. It is not unreasonable to assume that both of these theories may be partially correct. For purposes of our discussion, it is simpler to use the second theory. Generally speaking, when a plate of metal is attacked by an explosive shock pulse, the pulse is transmitted through the metal at high velocity, as shown in Fig. 1(A). Pressures at the shock front may be 6 X 10' psi or higher. This shock wave (a compression wave) upon striking a free surface, Fig. 1(B), is partially reflected back as a tension wave. The interaction of the tension wave with the decaying compression wave causes a stress concentration in the metal; when this stress becomes great enough, a failure occurs and a small particle flies off and is projected away from the metal surface, as shown in Fig. 1(C). A new free surface is then presented to the shocks; the process repeats itself until there is no longer enough energy to cause failure, leaving a portion of the metal relativcly untouched. See Fig. 1(D). To apply this theory to a perforating shaped charge, consider the flat plate to be folded into a somewhat conical shape, with a column of explosive placed in intimate contact with the cone (Fig. 2). The great mining region of Peru is a mountainous belt of country, running nearly the whole length of the republic, and comprising the two grand ranges of the Andes with the elevated table-lands between them. On the east of this belt are the extensive plains and fertile valleys of the Amazon and its tributaries. On the west is a narrow strip of coast 20 to 50 miles wide, for the most part a sandy desert, but producing abundant crops where irrigated ; and here are found petroleum (Department of Piura), salt (at Huacho and elsewhere), nitrate of soda in enormous amounts at the south, silver in a few localities (Province of Tarapaca), copper and other mineral products. The Western Cordillera, running nearly parallel with the shoreline, rises like a wall on the eastern side of the coast-belt, with passes from 15,000 to 18,000 feet high and peaks attaining 18,000 to 20,000 feet. Further east, at a varying distance, is the Eastern Cordillera, composed of broken mountain ranges which, considered as one group, have a general parallelism with the western chain, but individually vary greatly in direction, sometimes running nearly east and west, in places projecting out into the Amazonian lands, or here and there curving around to unite with the western ridge, and with this enclosing immense inter-alpine plains. These general features are indicated in Fig. 1. The surface of these plains is uneven and traversed by lower ranges of hills which surround large lakes, or rolling pampas, or fertile valleys; and through many of these last run rivers of considerable size. The whole country has a high altitude (averaging up to 15,000 or 16,000 feet), and slopes gradually north and east towards the Amazon, into which drain all its waters. Its bounding mountain chains are scored on all sides by narrow, picturesque and pre-

Using the same experimental method previously described, the activity of sulfur in a number of quaternary and more complex liquid iron alloys at 1550oC is determined. A "cross-product term zj.zk is determined for each of the quaternary alloys to take account of the mutual effects of the combinalion on the indi-vidual contributions to In 5 The interactiotl coefjicienls delermined for ternary solutions and cross-pvoducl coefficierlts from the quaternary systems are used to estimate the activity coefficient of sulfur in more complex alloys. OUR recent papers 1,2 have described new determinations of the activity of sulfur in Fe-S binary and Fe-S-j ternary solutions, but the practical applications of these data require the estimation of activity of sulfur in more complex systems. Previously, Sherman and chipman3 devised an approximate method for calculating the activity of sulfur in complex systems by summing the contributions to the logarithm of the activity coefficient of each element in the alloy. This procedure is more successful, as one of us has pointed out,4 when the concentration variable is taken as zs = ns/(nFe — nS t CLJ~ nj) rather than the conventional atom fraction x~ = nS/(nF, + nS + Enj). In the former definition, which is based on analogy to interstitial solutions, the value assigned to uj is normally +1 for metallic and -1 for nonmetallic elements." In addition, however, the effects of mutual interaction between alloying elements must be considered for the accurate estimation of the activity of sulfur in more complex systems. The purpose of this investigation has been to devise a more reliable method for estimating the activity coefficient of sulfur in nmIticomponent iron alloys. The measurements were carried out on some quaternary systems Fe-S-j-k for combinations of silicon, chromium, nickel, cobalt, molybdenum, and tungsten. Manganese was not included since the experimental method has been found unsatisfactory for volatile, sulfide-forming elements. The experimental method was the same in every detail as described previously. 1,2 The concentrations of sulfur, silicon, chromium, and copper in the quenched metals were determined by chemical analysis but those of nickel, cobalt, molybdenum, and tungsten were calculated from charged amounts. Iron sulfide was included in the charges in amounts estimated to furnish approximately the final sulfur content. CALCULATION W2 have shown2 that when zs and zj are the concentration variables in a ternary Fe-S-j solution the logarithm of the activity coefficient S = a~/zg is a linear function of the variables as and aj defined as follows:

BECAUSE of the well known relationship between a low atmospheric pressure and increased amounts of methane in coal mines, attempts have been made to find associations between low pressures and coal mine explosions. An early study by F. Able disclaimed this relationship. He found that half the explosions took place during a rising barometer when methane content in a ventilated mine would be decreasing. A more recent study by C. L. Hosler revealed a close relationship between anthracite mine explosions and low atmospheric pressure. Bituminous coal mine explosions, where coal dust as well as methane can be exploded, were found to be more closely associated with a rising pressure following a low barometer than with the falling or low pressure period. Emphasis on rising pressure periods led the present writer to investigate the effect of the post-frontal or post-cyclonic weather on coal dust. Dust samples of uniform mesh were exposed in an Illinois mine. Analyses of the dust taken before and after the passage of cold fronts and their accompanying low pressure troughs indicated an increase in coal dust moisture prior to a frontal passage and loss of moisture from coal dust following the time of lowest pressure. Thus the warm, moist air (Tropical Maritime)found over the mine during the falling pressure period was cooled in the mine and moisture added to the dust. Cold, dry air (Polar Continental) accompanies' the rising barometer following a frontal passage and the air, being heated in the mine, subtracted moisture from the coal dust. A similar but seasonal phenomenon occurs from summer to winter, the dry dust period in winter being recognized as the more dangerous period. The question arose as to how the short period or daily changes in moisture content of coal dust compared with the seasonal changes. Temperature and humidity statistics were obtained from the surface and mine entry for the months of July andJanuary. The gain and Ioss of mdisture. to the hine were calculated for these two morths as were the gain and loss associated with mT (Tropical Maritime) and cP (Polar Continental),air masses as observed in the investigatiynsl. Temperature and humidity statistics tigatiynsl.taken from [the two air masses represent atimp span of only 34 hr. The redultant changes as presented in the accompanying table verify the supposition that short period changes in coal mine moisture may attain the magnitude of recognized dangerous seasonal changes. Statistics for the mT air and the July air have been placed next each other and those for cP and January air together for easier comparison of the two warm and two cold air units. The last column readily reveals that there is little difference in the amount of moisture being deposited in the mine from the mT air and the July average air. A similar conclusion is reached regarding the loss of moisture from the mine when it is affected by the cP air mass or the average January air. This comparison would be particularly true from late fall through early spring when strongly contrasting air mass changes are a common occurrence. The invasion of cold, dry air following a cold front thus produces a drying period that could well receive more attention as a danger period for coal dust explosions. This drying period would compare with Able's explosion period during a rising barometer. The drying period is also perltinent in Hosler's findings, where it was noted that the average explosion day (for bituminous coal mines) followed the day of lowest atmospheric pressure. Moreover, the author's investigation of some 365 coal mine explosions also indicates that this post-frontal period should receive special attention in connection with mine safety measures. Two comparatively recent major explosions in Illinois (Centralia and West Frapkfort) occurred after the mines had been under the influence of cold-dry air for 25 to 30 hr-following a deep low pressure passage. Dust was the important explosive element in both these explosions.

INTRODUCTION Created in 1944 to help rebuild those economies, principally in Europe, which were seriously damaged or destroyed during the Second World War, the World Bank--or to use its correct name, the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development-began its operational phase by making a loan to the Government of France to accomplish two tasks: (i) to import coal for space heating purposes; and (ii) to buy new machinery and equipment to help rehabilitate its coal mines. Once the thrust of reconstruction in postwar Europe was largely accomplished, the World Bank Group (for today the World Bank has three separate lending windows) turned to mobilizing funds to improve living standards in developing countries, which remains its primary goal today. Over this period of time, the World Bank Group has continued to assist the world mining industry in various ways and, since 1955 the World Bank Group has financed mining or mineral processing projects with loans/credits totalling $1.5 billion. The World Bank Group consists of two institutions--the World Bank itself and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), which was founded as a separate institution in 1956 and three separate lending windows--the World Bank, the International Development Association (IDA), and IFC. The World Bank loans are provided at commercially-related interest rates but have grace periods usually of up to 3 to 5 years and repayment periods ranging from around 15 to 20 years. Since the World Bank raises its operating funds on the international capital markets in varying currencies and in varying interest rates, it relends a basket of currencies at floating interest rates which are fixed every six months to reflect the Bank's own borrowing cost. At the present time, the interest rate is just below 10% per year and in addition, a one-time front-end fee of 1/4 of 1% is charged. Also, a commitment fee of 3/4% per year is charged on the undisbursed amount of the loan itself. For loans to industrial and mining projects, it is normal to charge an additional guarantee fee of 1 to 1.5% in addition to the annual interest rate. This guarantee fee is payable to the government of the country in which the project is carried out since, by its charter, the World Bank is required to have the guarantee of the host government for each loan made in a specific country. By far the greatest source of lending funds within the World Bank Group is that of the World Bank itself and for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1984, the World Bank approved loans totalling $12 billion. The second lending window within the World Bank Group is IDA which performs the same functions as the Bank itself and has the same staff. Nevertheless, its loans (called credits) are made on much softer terms and are made to the poorest nations only. IDA funds are subscribed by the wealthier countries, usually as grants, and these are relent as credits to those countries with the lowest per capita income. IDA credits are made for 50 year periods, including 10 years of grace, to the government itself. The credits are interest free, but there is a service charge of 3/4% per year on the amount withdrawn and outstanding to defray the administrative costs of IDA. Credits approved during fiscal 1984 totalled $3.5 billion. The third lending window is IFC. While IFC is a separate corporation and operates quite separately from the World Bank and has its own staff and regulations, it works very closely with the World Bank on its overall approach to the mining sector and to a particular country. IFC's mission is essentially to supply venture capital and to stimulate development of the local private sector in capital markets as well as to promote the international flow of private capital to developing countries. The effect of treatment with ferrochrome lignosul-fonate on both sodium and calcium bentonites has been examined. In the early stages of treatment it appears that some base exchange of iron and chromium for sodium may occur with the sodium bentonite. Such exchange appears specific for exchange of sodium ions when the calcium ion concentration represents 40-5.5 per cent of the total exchangeable cations, and when additions of lignosulfonate are less than 1 lb per bbl. Adsorption appears entirely physical above 1 lb per bbl treatment level for all concentrations of calcium studied. Gel strength and plastic viscosity of both calcium and sodium bentonite systems were reduced with treatments of ferrochrome lignosulfonate up to 2 Ib per bbl, the greatest reduction occurring within a range of calcium concentration of 40-5.5 per cent of the total exchange capacity of the clay. INTRODUCTION The problem of control of viscosity and gel strength of drilling fluids by the action of thinners or dispersants has been studied by many investigators.1-7 In addition, much work has been done on formation of gel structure in clay suspensions. However, gel formation and structure still are incompletely understood, and the use of the various dispersing chemicals is based, to a large extent, on data almost entirely empirical in nature. In recent years the lignosulfonates have become increasingly important in the treatment and control of drilling fluids. More specifically, ferrochrome lignosulfonate has found rather wide acceptance, particularly in calcium systems.5-7 Lignosulfonates are refined lignin products made from spent sulfite liquor from which the fermentable sugars have been removed.15 The exact structure of lignin is not known; however, it is believed to be a phenolic propane type polymer which may exist as a branched chain or cross linked structure. The molecular weights of lignosulfonates probably range from 300 to 100,000 or more.15 A better understanding of the mechanism of adsorption of dispersants is essential before improvement and development of characteristics of drilling fluids and drilling fluid control is possible. This investigation was undertaken to determine the action of ferrochrome lignosulfonate on sodium and calcium montmOrillonite' LABORATORY INVESTIGATION A Stormer viscosimeter and Fann V-G meter were used to measure viscosity and gel strength. A Zeiss spectrophotometer was used for analysis of Fe and Cr and the flame attachment was employed in the analysis of Na, Ca and Mg. A General Electric X-ray diffraction unit utilizing Copper Ka radiation and a Ni-filter was utilized in the X-ray studies. PROCEDURE Two systems were studied. Predominately sodium clay, obtained from Wyoming, and a predominately calcium clay from Texas were used. These particular samples were chosen because of the extensive work of characterization completed by Mungan. Ionic base exchange capacity determined by flame photometry and total exchange capacity by the Kjehldahl method were obtained experimentally. A 7-per cent suspension of the sodium clay and a 20-per cent suspension of the calcium clay in distilled water were prepared by mixing with a high-speed mixer. The suspensions were allowed to stand for two weeks for complete hydration. Calcium chloride was added to portions of the sodium and calcium cla suspensions to obtain suspensions varying in Ca++ concentration as shown in Table I. A series of treatments was run with 500-ml portions of the original suspensions using a ferrochrome lignosulfonate. Treatment was carried out in the same way with each of the suspensions of varying Ca concentration. Viscosity and gel strength were measured and a filtrate obtained at each treatment level. Ten ml of filtrate were diluted to 50 ml, and aliquot portions of the 50 ml were taken for the Na, Ca, and Mg analysis by the flame photometer. The pH of these filtrates ranged from 7 to 7.3. THERE have been several statements in the literature about the difficulty of producing single crystals of high-purity (99.99pct) by the strain-anneal method. Consequently, investigators tend to employ low-purity aluminum for their single-crystal experiments, or else resort to the Bridgman or other techniques which depend on solidification for the production of single crystals. The following paragraphs describe a solid-state method for the manufacture of single crystals of high-purity aluminum which should provide crystals with greater perfection than those formed by solidification. The starting material for this method of producing single crystals was secured from the Aluminum Corp. of America and has a purity of 99.99 pct, the balance being trace amounts of impurities. Specimens approximately 1 by 4 in. are sheared from sheet having a nominal 0.050 in. thickness. The specimens are given a preliminary anneal at 640°C for approximately 3 hr in order to remove fabrication strains and to produce an average grain size of about 1/4-in. diam. The specimens are then etched in Tucker's etchant (45 pct HC1, 15 pct HNO3, 15 pct HF and 25 pct H2O) to remove the oxide film. Critical strain is applied by wrapping each specimen about a 1 3/4 in. round and subsequently straightening it against a flat surface. The high-purity aluminum sheet is sufficiently soft that this operation can be accomplished by ordinary finger pressure. The specimens are immediately annealed again at 640°C for 3 hr and reetched for examination. Ordinarily, considerable growth of certain of the grains will have occurred, and occasionally a single crystal will be produced on the first attempt. The procedure of alternately straining, annealing and etching is repeated until the majority of a batch of specimens contains usable crystal sizes. Typical examples are illustrated in Fig. 1. The greatest changes in crystal sizes are produced in the initial treatments. As the average crystal sizes get coarser in the later treatments, the sever- ity of the strain must be increased in order to produce grain boundary- migration. This increase in severity is effected by decreasing the diameter of the round used for straining (to 1 1/2 in., for example) and/or wrapping the specimens about the round twice, with opposite faces in contact with the round, before flattening. Usually the strain treatments described are not severe enough to produce nucleation in coarse grain high-purity aluminum. The growth of grains occurs by strain-induced grain-boundary migration. It has been observed that the grain boundaries move most readily during the first hour or so of each annealing treatment and that the rate of movement decreases with extended holding times at temperature. Prolonged annealing treatments are therefore not usually beneficial. Similarly, the rate of growth of each crystal appears to depend upon the orientation of the crystal with relation to those of its neighbors. Frequently island grains are formed after the initial heat treatment as the result of slow grain-boundary migration. These sometime become stationary during later heat treatments. Twin orientation interfaces are frequently developed during annealing. These imperfections can usually be removed by increasing the severity of strain to produce actual nucleation of new grains of more favorable orientation at the imperfection interfaces. The largest single crystals produced in our laboratory by the above method measured 4 by 1 by 0.050 in. Examination of Laue back-reflection patterns from a limited area of the specimens, gave no evidence of polygonization. Probably there is some indication of polygonization in the original grain area provided a more sensitive technique is used for detection. Experiments to produce wider specimens were less successful, possibly because wider sheets increase the complexity of the strains induced by deformation and promote widespread nucleation. Grain boundary migration occurs preferentially in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the specimen. The choice of specimen geometry with respect to the rolling direction of the sheet appears to be immaterial in regard to the production of single crystals.

The appraisal of an oil lease may often be mad,? through production decline analysis, which requires description of the functional relationship between the oil production rate and either cumulative production or time. Heretofore, attempts to define the function appropriate to a given set of production data have depended to some extent on subjective procedures. The purpose here is to introduce an objective solution, obtained by combining the principle of least squares with the theory of equations. MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS The fundamental differential equation appropriate to a general class of decline curves may be written. Solution of Eq. 1 for general boundary conditions may be written in terms of either the cumulative oil production or time: These equations constitute the mathematical expression of the so-called hyperbolic decline. The newly opened Hayden Creek lead mine represents a variation from the usual Southeast Missouri type. Galena mineralization occurs in sandy dolomite cementing a conglomerate of granite boulders and in cracks in the boulders. The conglomerate occurs at the base of the Bonneterre formation on the slopes of two buried pre-Cambrian knobs. IN 1943 diamond drilling from the surface in an area 2 miles southwest of Leadwood, Mo., discovered a lead deposit of a markedly different character from the usual southeast Missouri type. Subsequent drilling of about 500 holes indicated several million tons of ore, and in 1950 a 701-ft vertical shaft was sunk into the orebody. This paper describes the geology of this interesting occurrence insofar as it is known from the drilling and the small underground exposure at the bottom of the shaft. Geology The location of the Southeast Missouri Lead Belt and of the Hayden Creek property are shown in Fig. 1. As shown here, there are two separate producing areas, one from which the larger tonnage has come, located near Bonne Terre, Flat River, Desloge, and Leadwood, and the other to the south around Fred-ericktown and including famous old Mine LaMotte. The best published description of Lead Belt geology is by Tarr.* In pre-Cambrian time in this area, an assemblage of granites and rhyolitic flow rocks was eroded to a mature topography. Sedimentation, beginning in the Upper Cambrian, filled in the valleys and gradually covered even the highest hills. The first formation deposited was the La-motte sandstone; it is successively overlain by the Bonneterre dolomite, the principal lead-prodbcing formation, then the Davis shale. the Derby-Doerun limestone, and a succession of Cambro-Ordovician cherty dolomites. Several of these formations may be found in direct contact with the pre-Cambrian as their deposition progressively overlapped the older rocks on the flanks of the igneous knobs and ridges. Immediately overlying the pre-Cambrian there is, not uncommonly, a thin basal conglomerate of granite or porphyry boulders, which is incorporated into the overlying sediments. Deposition of the lower part of the rock section was fairly continuous, and the Lamotte sometimes grades almost imperceptibly into the lower sandy Bonneterre. Since the sediments were deposited on an uneven floor, they tend to reflect the irregularities in that floor. Most of the steep dips found in the district, that is, dips in excess of 10°, are original dips and not caused by deformation. Such domelike structures in the sedimentary rocks around the igneous knobs have localized a considerable number of the orebodies in the district and particularly those in the Frederick-town area. Many of the larger orebodies, however, have no close relation to the pre-Cambrian topography. Most of the lead production has come from the lower 150 ft of the Bonneterre formation, where disseminated ore spreads laterally parallel to the bedding for great distances. Average stoping height is about 20 ft, but in a few places there are stopes over 175 ft high.

An important question in the study of the "hot corrosion" phenomenon (i.e., accelerated oxidation of Ni-Cr-base and Co-Cr-base "superalloys" in the presence of sulfur) is the condition of formation and physico-chemical properties of different sulfides in the system Ni-Co-Cr-S. seyboltl has observed the presence of ((chromium-rich" sulfides of compositions M3S4, and M2S3 in the scales of superalloys after hot corrosion; however, as he points out, much confusion exists as to the identity of sulfides found on Ni-Cr and Co-Cr alloys. According to the literature,&apos; ternary sulfides, e.g., NiCr2S4, (monoclinic structure) and CoCr2S4 (spinel structure) exist in these systems. Therefore, it is likely that these compounds are found in the scale of alloys undergoing hot corrosion. At present this possibility has not been discussed in the literature. Accordingly, we have begun investigation on the properties of ternary sulfides and their mutual interaction. The magnetic and electrical properties of pure NiCr2S4 and pure CoCr2S2 have been previously determined."-&apos; In the present work we have studied the interaction between these sulfides at high temperatures by means of X-ray diffraction and magnetic susceptibility. The measurements were carried out at room temperature after appropriate thermai treatment of samples at high temperatures. For alloys containing the three elements nickel, chromium, and cobalt this interaction may be of importance in the study of the hot corrosion phenomenon. The compounds NiCr2S4 and CoCr2S4 were prepared from stoichiometric amounts of the elements and CoS in the case of CoCr2S4. Samples were mixed and sealed in evacuated silica tubes, slowly heated to 900&apos; to 100O°C, and held at temperature for a total of 120 hr (NiCr2S4) or 80 hr (CoCr2S4) with intermediate re-grinding~. X-ray diffraction showed a pure spinel structure for CoCr2S4 and a monoclinic structure for NiCr2S4. Samples of mixtures of the two ternary sulfides were prepared with different compositions, see Table I. Samples were heated for a total of 80 hr at 900&apos;C in evacuated silica tubes, with one intermediate regrind-ing. The capsules were slow-cooled to room temperature in the furnace. Samples for X-ray diffraction were prepared by placing powder on a glass slide with vaseline. Dif- fractometer traces were obtained on a G.E. XRD-5 diffractometer using a chromium tube and vanadium filter (40 kv and 31 ma). The size of the spinel unit cell was determined from the eight highest angle peaks (80 deg < 2b < 160 deg). Calculated lattice parameters were plotted vs cos B . ctn 0 and extrapolated to 6 = 90 deg. Measurements of the magnetic susceptibility were carried out at room temperature using the Faraday method in a magnetic field of 3000 G and using a Cahn RG automatic microbalance. The system was calibrated from the well-established susceptibilities of platinum and palladium: (Xpt = 0.968 x 10-6 g-1 and Xpd 7 5.04 x 10~6 g-1). The weight of samples were approximately 0.200 g. X-ray diffraction patterns for unsintered mixtures showed Bragg peaks from both the spinel (CoCr2S4) and monoclinic (NiCr2S4) structures. After sintering no monoclinic peaks were observed in samples containing up to 40 mol pct NiCr2S4. However, the spinel peaks were displaced to higher angles with increasing

A general model which approximates the effect of cross- flow has been developed to give a practical method for predicting the waterflood behavior of a stratified reservoir. The model is based on a modification of Dietz&apos;s theory and allows for variations in both the permeability and hydrocarbon pore volume. In the particular cases considered, it is assumed that the permeability can be characterized by a log-normal distribution and the hydrocarbon pore volume by a normal distribution. A simple graphical method which enables the practicing engineer to predict the behavior of a stratified system is presented The results obtained by the proposed method are compared with those obtained by the Dykstra-Parsons method. As a result of this study the following conclusions have been drawn: (1) The effect of cross-flow in a stratified system can be appreciable, particularly at very favorable or very unfavorable mobility ratios; (2) Under normal conditions, the effect of variations in the hydrocarbon pore volume can be neglected; and (3) The failure to use all of the available permeability data can lead to large errors in the prediction of the behavior of a stratified reservoir. INTRODUCTION Various methodshavebeenproposedto characterize and to predict the waterflood behavior of a stratified reservoir. Most of the methods assume that the reservoir is composed of discrete homogeneous continuous layers. With this model, the degree of stratification can be measured by several parameters based on core-analysis data. Among these are the Lorenz coefficient1 and the variation of a log-normal permeability distribution? The behavior of stratified systems is usually predicted by the Stiles, Dykstra-Parsons method or some modification of these. In both of these methods the reservoir is divided into discrete homogeneous layers with no cross-flow between layers. In the Stiles method the mobility ratio is assumed to be equal to unity while in the Dykstra-Parsons method it is allowed to take on any value. Other predictive methods have been proposed; method allows for cross-flow between the beds and a method by Schmalz and Rahme6 correlate.s the recovery directly with the Lorenz coefficient. In this new approach, which is essentially a continuous analog of Hiatt&apos;s method, the effects of both mobility ratio and cross-flow between the beds have been included. It is assumed that the permeability can be represented by a log-normal distribution and the hydrocarbon pore volume or porosity by a normal distribution. These types of distributions have been observed by several authors, 1,2,4 and most field data seem to confirm their observations; e.g., if these distributions are assumed and there is a 1:l correspondence between porosity and permeability samples, the commonly encountered linear relationship between porosity and the log of permeability is obtained. Since, in many field cases the permeability and poro sity data are truncated or cut-off at predetermined upper and/or lower values, the effect of discarding part of the data was investigated with the proposed method. A better technique for truncating the data is suggested. THEORY In the derivation of the method to be described in this paper the following assumptions are made: 1. Capillary forces are negligible per se; their effects are only manifest in the relative permeability curves. 2. The fluids are immiscible, incompressible and homogeneous. 3. The reservoir is horizontal and uniformly thick; it is initially liquid saturated i.e., connate water and oil. 4. A distillate-bearing sand complex is often made up of sand stringers of different permeabilities. In order to take into account the influence of the different permeabilities, "parallel flow" is defined, and this concept is used to compute the recovery efficiency of recycling such a sand complex. In the first approximation the position of the wells with respect to one another is not considered. In order to compute the effect on the recovery efficiency of the position of the wells, the area of a field is considered to be made up of rectangles; each rectangle containing one input well in the center and two producers located symmetrically with respect to the input well. Formulas are given from which to obtain the pressure and streamlines in a steady-state flow. A method is devised to compute rapidly the successive positions of the dry gas front. If the field is irregular in shape, pressure and streamlines can be obtained by a potentio-metric electrical model study. By using the concept of "parallel flow" and the results obtained by mathematical analysis or by electrical model study for a homogeneous formation, the effects of different permeabilities and of the location of the wells can be established. From these studies it is apparent that the efficiency of recycling can be profoundly influenced by differences in permeability among the various parallel strata. Introduction With the discovery of an increasing number of gas-distillate fields in the Gulf Coast, engineers have had occasion to give more thought to the performance of these reservoirs, as evidenced by the literature published in recent years. In the majority of studies published so far the formations are considered to consist of uniform, homogeneous sand. In this paper the authors wish to bring out the effect of variations in the permeability of the formations on the over-all recovery efficiency of wet gas in cycling operations. The importance of the permeability profile is clearly indicated by the fact that in gas cycling, highly permeable stringers in an otherwise tight sand can allow complete displacement of wet by dry gas in these stringers long before the wet gas in the tight portions of the sand is displaced. This by-passing will be reflected by a reduction in the condensate content of the production sooner than can be anticipated from a mathematical analysis or an electrical model study on uniform sands. Electrical model studies or mathematical analyses cannot take into consideration the manifold variations of permeability within the reservoir. Experimental as well as analytical difficulties make it necessary to consider the prototype for either of these studies as a perfectly uniform sand. Mathematical analyses are applicable only when a reservoir can be divided into units of simple geometrical form, of uniform thickness throughout. Electric model studies are capable of giving information on reservoirs of any shape or thickness, but it is essential that the sand be considered homogeneous, so that three-dimensional flow can take place. A laboratory study of the effects of physical and easily measured rheological properties upon dynamic filtration was carried out. The purpose was to determine the factors affecting dynamic filtration and thus learn how to control this important property. The recommended procedure for determining the amount of fluid loss prescribed by API Code RP 29 "Field Procedure for Testing Drilling Fluids,"&apos; is very useful for mud conditioning purposes, but inadequate for comparing filtration properties of different muds under dynamic conditions. Where dynamic filtration control becomes important for purposes such as logging and coring, other means of evaluating filtration properties are needed. A special device and testing technique were developed to provide reliable data on filtration characteristics of different fluids under dynamic conditions. Liquid saturated rock samples were drilled with a microbit, and the amount of connate liquid displaced by the fluid being investigated was measured. The empirical testing procedure was considered reliable. A large number of laboratory-prepared and field-mixed dritling fluids with a wide range of physical properties were studied. These properties included: (I) shape of consistency curves, (2) apparent viscosity, (3) plastic viscosity, (4) yield value, (5) density, and (6) API filter loss. Test results indicate that very little, if any, trend could be established between changes in these fluid properties and dynamic filtration. INTRODUCTION During the process of drilling, excessive loss of liquid from the mud to the formation is undesirable for many reasons. Filtration can reduce production-zone permeability, cause sloughing of formations, affect electric log curves, and render the fluid data obtained from cores unreliable. Thus, it is very important that we gain a knowledge of the factors that control filtration. It is generally agreed that in any type of filtration (static, dynamic, or combinations thereof), the mechanics of filtering depend in great part upon the composition of the fluid. Moreover, it is also true that the physical and rheological properties are influenced by the composition of the fluid. Indirectly, then, it was hypothesized that a relationship existed between dynamic filtration and physical-rheological properties, two effects of a common cause—fluid composition. This paper discusses an attempt to relate filtration-while-drilling to physical and easily measured rheological properties. It is believed that the results of this study may prove useful to others in the industry who are working on the problem of understanding filtration. The industry accepted practice for determining fluid loss from drilling mud is described in API Code RP 29. The practice is to measure the amount of filtrate that passes during a given interval of time from a quiescent drilling fluid under applied pressure through a piece of filter paper. This is primarily a test of static filtration properties. Other investigators have studied filtration under dynamic conditions. Williams5 and Pro-kop5 studied radial filtration and filter-cake buildup by circulating fluid through a porous cylinder under conditions similar to actual mud flow. Nowak,4 Krueger,3,4 and Vogel3 studied the effect of filtration upon permeability by flowing mud past the face of rock Samples. In their tests, the bit action was simulated by mechanical scrapers that kept the filter cake from building up. Ferguson and Klotz2 studied three types of filtration: static, dynamic, and beneath-the-bit. They investigated each type separately, using a model well in which bottom-hole hydraulics and mechanics were closely approximated.

STRAIN aging is the name given to time-dependent changes which occur in the properties of cold-worked metals and alloys during storage. These changes are best observed through a study of mechanical properties, as illustrated in Fig. I for low-carbon steel. The effects of strain aging are usually regarded as being detrimental, particularly in deep-drawing steels. For example, an increase in yield strength and loss in ductility lead to buckling and tearing during drawing. At the same time the return of the yield point results in the formation of Luders bands or stretcher strains during the pressing operation. As a result of these effects many attempts have been made to eliminate strain aging from low-carbon steel. The problem still remains, however, because all known methods of preventing strain aging result in a more costly steel. The present work is an assessment of the situation in terms of theoretical, practical, and economic factors and suggests a new solution to the problem. Previous Work According to the Cottrell theory,&apos; strain aging in a-iron may be regarded as the migration of interstitial atoms to free dislocations and the anchoring of dislocations by the resulting atmospheres. It may be concluded that the important factors which will govern the degree of strain aging are the diffusivity, the effective amount of interstitial element in solution, and the time of aging. The diffusivities and effective amounts of carbon and nitrogen in solution in low-carbon rimming steel are such that significant aging occurs in a few hours&apos; storage at room temperature. Strain aging in deep-drawing steels cannot be controlled by controlling the time of aging because in commercial practice this is determined by economic factors concerned with inventories and may be several weeks. The diffusivity of nitrogen is twice that of carbon at room temperature but the diffusivities can be controlled by controlling the storage temperature. The retardation produced by only a 25 °C drop in temperature is significant but the cold storage of large steel inventories is an impractical solution to Table I. By far the most simple and effective ways to control strain aging are through control of the amount of carbon and nitrogen in solution. This may be effected through alloying, controlled precipitation, or by eliminating the carbon and nitrogen. Consider first the control of the amount of carbon in solution. The simplest approach would be alloy -ing in which strong carbide-forming elements are added. Examples of this approach are the additions of titanium&apos; and niobium9 0 steel. These elements also combine with nitrogen and oxygen and when added in sufficient quantity result in a completely killed and non-aging steel. They are, however, impractical additions because they result in a costly steel. Carbon and nitrogen are often removed from iron on a laboratory scale by annealing in wet hydrogen, but because of cost this process has never been adopted on a commercial scale. In practice the amount of carbon in solution is controlled by the rate of cooling from the annealing temperature (710°C or 1310°F). In commercial box

INTRODUCTION The project financing described elsewhere in this book is available to major mining companies on the basis of a strong balance sheet, a significant equity position in a project of proven feasibility, and a demonstrated ability to bring ore deposits into production. "Junior" mining companies, which are most active in Canada, Australia, the US, and South Africa, by definition do not meet these criteria. In many cases, junior companies will need to raise money simply to cover the costs of acquiring and exploring potential deposits. In what follows we will look primarily at junior financing practices in the US and Canada, although the same general principles will apply in Australia and South Africa. The principal vehicles for junior mine company financing are limited partnerships, the private placement of securities and debentures, and public offering of securities, and property deals with stronger companies, in the form of leases, earn-ins and co-ventures. The cost (in terms of dollars or equity) and, to some extent, the applicability of using these difficult approaches varies with the stage of development of the property and with the corresponding degree of risk to the investor. Much junior company fund raising is, in fact, "interim" financing in that it allows the company to improve its properties and develop its assets to the stage where more favorable financing arrangements may become available. Companies will therefore often use several of the approaches described above during the development life of a specific property. LIMITED PARTNERSHIPS Limited partnerships and syndications are a popular way of structuring the initial private financing of mine developments because of their attractive tax consequences for the well-to-do investor. Costs of exploration and development can in many countries be passed through as deductions to the limited partners, who are thus able to gamble on a possible windfall at little real cost. In addition to private Canadian funds, much German money flowed into Canadian exploration ventures on this basis, but stopped in 1982 due to economic conditions in West Germany. In the US, recent regulations have, in the great majority of cases, taken away the ability to "shelter" income in mining limited partnerships. Deductions taken by the individual investor cannot exceed the amount of money he actually has at risk. Nevertheless, the allowable deductions are still attractive and some of the major mining companies are now beginning to look at limited partnerships as a vehicle for attracting additional exploration funding. Ranchers Exploration and Development has successfully put together several drilling funds on this basis. THE PRIVATE PLACEMENT Initial funding for the acquisition and preliminary exploration of prospects is often accomplished through a private placement of unregistered securities or, where it is not a problem to carry debt on the statement, by a private placement sale of debentures. A fledgling company wishing to do a public offering may well be advised by an underwriter to accomplish a small private placement as a precondition of the larger offering. In this way, the sale of the registered securities is not inhibited by the company starting out with a debt-ridden balance sheet and no demonstrated ability to secure the additional financing generally necessary beyond the proceeds of that offering. In the US, the securities offered in a private placement are not registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (S.E.C.) but are restricted as to their resale, and could be further restricted by a underwriting agreement

THE current emphasis in preparing boron fibers by reduction of gaseous boron compounds on a resistively heated metal wire substrate has renewed interest in the borides of those metals which have relatively high melting points and are available as fine wires. A knowledge of the structures and properties of the borides, which are formed when boron diffuses into the metal core during boron deposition, can be of assistance in the understanding of the boron fiber formation process and the fiber properties. Many of these borides are well-known and their properties have been measured. However, when an unidentified boride is found in the core, it may be difficult to establish its composition because of the small amount of material available, the preferred orientation effects on the reflections in its X-ray pattern, and the possible overlap of X-ray reflections if several borides are present in the core. For example. the proper indexing of the X-ray pattern of WB4, which was formed in the tungsten substrate core during boron fiber formation, was accomplished only after small single crystals of this boride were grown and X-ray precession investigations were conducted.&apos; This note presents the results of a study of the phases formed in the core when tungsten, tantalum, and molybdenum metal wires were used as substrates in the boron fiber preparation process with particular emphasis on the identification and characterization of a higher boride of molybdenum analogous to WB,. Boron was deposited on resistively heated stationary 0.0012-in.-diam tantalum, tungsten, and molybdenum wires at 1050°C for various times up to 60 sec using boron trichloride and hydrogen as the reactant gases. After 60 sec of boron deposition the fibers were approximately 0.006 in. in diam. Examination of photomicrographs of fiber cross sections showed that the boron had diffused nearly to the center of the tungsten and molybdenum cores in 15 and 30 sec, respectively, and only halfway to the center of the tantalum core in 60 sec. X-ray diffraction photographs of the fibers indicated that it was also after 15 and 30 sec deposition times that the tungsten and molybdenum metal reflections, respectively, had disappeared from the X-ray patterns of the fibers. The patterns of the boron fibers produced using tantalum wire as a substrate showed that amorphous boron, TaB2, and tantalum metal were present after a few seconds deposition time and remained even after deposition times of 60 sec. Until a deposition time of 15 sec was reached, the tungsten substrate fibers contained amorphous boron,273 6WB, W2B5, and WB4 as well as tungsten metal, while the molybdenum substrate fibers contained amorphous boron, MoBa, Mo2B5, and molybdenum metal for deposition times up to 30 sec. Just before the molybdenum metal pattern disappeared, a pattern similar to that of WB, appeared, suggesting that a phase, MOB,, isomorphous with WB,, was present in the fiber. This same pattern was obtained from the product formed by heating a mixture of molybdenum metal and excess boron powder in a boron nitride crucible at 1960°C in an argon atmosphere. As was the case with the WBn pattern, this pattern could best be indexed on the basis of a hexagonal unit cell rather than the tetragonal unit cell Chrktien and Helgorsky reported for ~0~4,~ see Table I. The unit cell parameters for MoB4 were calculated to be a, = 5.214A, co = 6.358A.
