Conventional resistivity logs consisting of a short normal, a long normal, and one or more long lateral curves do not give data that allow a complete quantitative interpretation in beds thinner than 20 ft. Reservoir rocks usually exhibit zones of continuous homogeneity of quite limited thickness where the long lateral curves become useless because of adjacent bed effects and boundary phenomena. If the beds are 12 ft or thicker, the short and long normals may be used for qualitative interpretation, which can be streamlined by the application of simplified departure curves. For beds of a thickness less than twice the long normal spacing, this procedure breaks down. The combination of the limestone curve, the later-olog or guard electrode log, and the microlaterolog permit quantitative interpretation for beds that are at least 10 ft thick, provided the mud resistivity and the hole diameter are known with sufficient accuracy. For beds thinner than 10 ft, combinations of the microlaterolog with short spaced laterologs and pseudo laterologs appear to be promising. Interpretation of these curves again requires the application of simplified departure curves. Resolution of various possible combinations was analyzed using departure curve data calculated on the Whirlwind I computer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A field example is shown using the microlaterolog-microlog combination, and the combination of a 6-in. modified laterolog plus a 6-in. pseudo laterolog. INTRODUCTION For the purpose of quantitative interpretation of resistivity logs in porous formations, we want to obtain two essential quantities from the logs, namely, the true resistivity of the undisturbed formation, Rt, and the resistivity of the part of the formation invaded by mud filtrate, Rt. The apparent resistivities of all conventional logging devices are functions of these two parameters and are also influenced by a third unknown parameter, the diameter of the invaded zone, d. It has been shown' that from the normal curves alone it is impossible to arrive at a unique solution for the three unknowns, Rt, R1, and d1. In very thick homogeneous beds, if invasion is not too deep, we can obtain a fair approximation to Rt from the long lateral curves and then use the two normal curves to find Rt and d1 Even under the most favorable conditions, the resolution of this system is not very good. The short normal does not give a reasonable approximation to R1 unless invasion is very deep (dl>16 hole diameters). For very deep invasion, however, the long laterals no longer approximate Rt. For bed thickness between 20 and 40 ft, the long laterals are affected appreciably by the adjacent beds; and the curves are distorted by boundary anomalies to the extent that they lose their quantitative usefulness in most cases. For the same bed thicknesses, the normal curves still function reasonably well. Although it is impossible to find unique solutions Lor R1 and Rt using the normal curves alone, we can obtain a reasonable approximation for the ratio R1/Rt through the use of simplified departure curves. This fact was brought to our attention by A. J. de Witte, geologist with Continental Oil Co. As the magnitude of Rl/Rt is a major clue to the presence of oil in formations, this method can be used to good advantage for qualitative analysis and will be discussed in somewhat greater detail. With the aid of suitable bed thickness corrections, the analysis of the normal curves may be used for bed thicknesses larger than 12 ft. For thinner beds, the method rapidly loses its resolution; and we have to resort to different types of resistivity logs if we want to attempt to analyze the curves quantitatively. The inadequacy of conventional resistivity curves in thin beds is far more serious than generally realized. Fig. 1 shows a conventional E. S. with a 16-in. and 64-in. normal and a 16-ft lateral through a section of Lansing-Kansas City lime, in comparison to a guard electrode survey through the same section in a neighboring well. The porous zones, which show up as low resistivity breaks on the guard electrode log, are completely masked by adjacent bed effects and boundary anomalies on the conventional curves. CONTINUED progress in zinc metallurgy has been shown during 1933 by the adoption of new methods as well as the modernization of old processes and equipment, and by the initiation of new fields of activity for future advancement. The use of suspension roasting continued to grow as its advantages and adaptability became increasingly, apparent. The process developed by the National Smelting Co., Ltd., several years ago, of completely roasting on large sintering machines with utilization of the gas for acid manufacture has worked so successfully that an additional machine was installed during the year. At both the Swansea and the Avonmouth Works all of the ore for smelting is now roasted on the large sintering machines, thereby completely eliminating the old hearth-roasting furnaces. Work continued on obtaining partial purification of zinc ores from lead and cadmium by close control of conditions on the sintering machine, and in a few instances by chlorine additions to the ore before sintering. The purpose of this book is to present the practical side of economic geology concisely and in convenient form; established facts and the applications of accepted views are emphasized; theoretical discussions and questions of genesis are avoided. Coal, iron, and placer deposits are omitted; they are subjects of specialized study that are fully and concisely treated in other works. The reader is assumed to possess a knowledge of mineralogy, petrography, and elementary geology. The arrangement adopted is based on Kemp's theory of magmatic waters, on Lindgren's conclusions on hydrothermal and secondary alterations, and on the theories of secondary enrichment enunciated by Emmons and Weed. No general classification of ore deposits is attempted, nor is any attempt made to fill by hypothesis the wide gaps, nor to explain the apparent contradictions that rank economic geology among the most inexact of sciences. The present knowledge of the subject is too incomplete to warrant such broad generalizations. The demand for good properties generally exceeds the supply. While mines of the first rank will undoubtedly be discovered from time to time, it is probably true that a great proportion of deposits having outcrops of commercial grade or of evident promise have been recognized and explored. A review of mining conditions over long periods shows that the rich discoveries belong to pioneer days, and that as time goes on the more important developments are the result of lower working costs, improved metallurgical processes, and an increasing knowledge of economic geology. As engineers in search of developed mines no longer expect to find properties having positive ore of greater net value than the price asked, so those in search of prospects should not expect to

THE Hume-Rothery rule relating the relative sizes of the solvent and solute atoms in a substitutional solid solution for moderate to extensive solubility is, of course, well known and much used in the design of alloys. No such rule has been obtained for interstitial solid solutions, although a qualitatively similar relationship would be expected. Among the most common interstitial elements, oxygen, carbon, and nitrogen which can dissolve in important amounts in the transition metals, only in the case of oxygen is there enough solubility data available for an examination of the possibilities of a simple relationship between the extent of solubility and the properties of the metal solvents. Three properties were examined: 1—size of the octahedral space V into which oxygen atoms fit, 2— the elastic modulus E, and 3—the free energy ?F of formation of a low oxide, such as is known to be, or would be expected to be, in equilibrium with the terminal solid solution. The size factor or octahedral volume is so closely associated with the well known Hume-Rothery con- cept of size factor that additional development of this subject is hardly necessary. The octahedral volume used was not corrected to an elevated temperature, as this correction would have made no significant difference. The second factor, Young's modulus E, must be considered, since it is a measure of the strain energy required to force neighboring atoms apart so that an oxygen atom may enter the octahedral volume. The temperature dependence of the elastic modulus of many metals has been reported by Köster,1 but for a rather limited temperature range. Since the

IN connection with an investigation in this laboratory on the high-zinc side of the copper-zinc system, it was observed that well developed segre-gate structures of the Widmanstätten type were formed when a secondary phase precipitated from the solid solution of copper in zinc. This paper presents an analysis of the crystallographic relationship between the segregate and the solid solution matrix. The data to be presented are an interesting addition to the literature on segregate structures in that the plane of segregation is one of the less densely populated planes. In agreement with the generalization of C. H. Mathewson and D. W. Smith1 the plane of segregation in the matrix con-tains the direction of closest atomic packing of the lattice. Furthermore, the matrix and the segregate are both hexagonal close-packed, which has not been reported hitherto in the literature.2 The increasing com-mercial importance of zinc alloys containing copper makes this funda-mental study of value to the metallography of zinc alloys.

WALTER DOUGLAS succeeded his father, Dr. James Douglas, as president of Phelps Dodge in 1916. Before assuming office, the new president had been assayer at Bisbee, superintendent of the Copper Queen, general manager of all the Phelps Dodge mining interests, and altogether had spent a full quarter of a century in various phases of the company's business. Energetic and imaginative, experienced and courageous, he had need of all these qualities before he surrendered the direction of affairs into younger hands, fourteen years later. For the period of his administration was one of sudden ebb apd flow, flush production, drastic curtailment, quick recovery, and near-disaster. In 1917, soon after Walter Douglas became president, Phelps, Dodge & Co., Inc., which had been formed in 1908 as a holding company, went through an internal reorganization for the purpose of simplifying the structure and changing it from a holding company to an operating company. W. M. Williams (McGill University)-The authors are to be congratulated on completing this detailed investigation of recrystallization behavior. The present writer has recently completed some research at the University of Toronto on the recrystallization and grain growth behavior of a number of "pure" irons, and he would like to take issue with the authors' contention that recrystallization cannot be followed by means of hardness measurements. Two series of specimens of Ferrovac E, a com- mercially available iron, were annealed to complete recrystallization at 525" and 620" C, measurements being made both of Rockwell hardness and of volume percent recrystallized as a function of annealing time. Good correlation was found between these two quantities and, following the earlier practice of Cook and Richards for copper, hardness measurements were used in an extensive investigation of recrystallization. No anomalous behavior was observed as a result of this practice. Specimens which showed complete softening always showed, (metallographically and by X-rays), completely re-crystallized structures. These observations do not, of course, detract in the least from the results of the work under discus-

Electrical resistivities 01 liquid Cd-Bi, Cd-Sn, Cd-Pb, In-Bi, and Sn-Bi alloys were measured using an electrodeless technique. The resistivities ranged from 50 to 160 microhm -cm, temperature dependences were positive, and no sharp peaks in the composition dependence of the resistivity were observed. On the basis of these observations, it was concluded that the alloys are typical metallic liquids. The electron con-cent9,ation was calculated from the measured resis-tizlity and available thermodynamic data using a model which attributes electrical resistivity to scattering by density and composition flzcctuations. A correla-tion was shown between the departure of the electron concentration from a linear combination of the pure component valences and the value of the excess integral molar free energy. Calculation of the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity showed a need for more detailed thermodynamic data in these systems and led to suggestions for improvement in the concept of residual resistivity in the fluctuation scattering model. THE electrical resistivity of liquid metals provides information regarding interatomic interactions and their effects upon structure. In this experiment an electrodeless technique was used to measure the electrical resistivities of liquid alloys of Cd-Bi, Cd-Sn, Cd-Pb, In-Bi, and Sn-Bi, and the results were used with thermodynamic data to calculate a parameter which reflects the tendency toward localization of electrons due to compositional ordering. It was found that the resistivities of these alloys are generally metallic in magnitude and temperature dependence. The electrical and thermodynamic properties are discussed in terms of the fluctuation scattering model'22 which supposes that the electrical resistivity arises from scattering due to a static average structure and departures from the average due to fluctuations in density and composition. Further, this model is compared with the pseudopotential scattering model of Ziman et al.3-5 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Alloy samples were prepared from 99.999 pct pure elements obtained from American Smelting and Refining Company (except tin which was obtained from Consolidated Smelting and Refining Company.) The resistivity of a liquid alloy was measured by placing the sample inside a solenoid and noting the change in Q. According to the method of Nyburg and ~ur~ess,~ the resistivity of a cylindrical sample may be determined from the change in resistance of a solenoid measured with a Q meter as T7--5--W =R7JT^ ='Kc-lm(Y) [1] where L, R, and Q = wL/R are the inductance, series resistance, and Q of the solenoid. The subscript s refers to the solenoid with the sample inside; the subscript 0 refers to the empty solenoid. Kc is the ratio of the sample volume to coil volume and y = 2 [bei'0(br)-j ber'o(br)~\ br\_bero(br) +j bei0 (br) expressed with Kelvin functions which are the real and imaginary parts of Bessel functions of the first kind with arguments multiplied by (j)3'2. The argument of the function Y is hr where r is the sample radius and b2 = po~/p, i.e., the permeability of free space times 271 times the frequency divided by the resistivity in rationalized MKS units. Since Eq. [I] cannot be solved explicitly for p, values of Kc. lm(Y) were tabulated at increments of 0.1 in the argument by. A measurement of Q, and Q, determined a value of Kc . lm (Y) and the corresponding value of br could be read from the table. From the known r, uo,, and w, the resistivity, p, was determined. The change in Q was measured after letting the encapsulated Sample reach equilibrium inside a copper wire solenoid. The solenoid was contained in an evacuated vycor tube in order to retard oxidation of the copper while operating at high temperatures and heated inside a 5-sec-tion nichrome tube furnace capable of obtaining 900°C. Temperature was determined with two chromel-alumel thermocouples, one in contact with the solenoid 30 mm above the top of the sample and the other inserted in an axial well at the other end of the solenoid and secured with cement so that the junction was 2 mm below the bottom of the sample. Temperature readings were taken with respect to an ice water bath junction, and the voltage could be estimated to the nearest thousandth of a millivolt. The lower thermocouple was calibrated by observing its voltage and the Q of the coil as the temperature passed through the melting points of samples of indium and tellurium. The upper thermocouple reading was systematically different from the lower thermocouple reflecting the temperature difference due to a displacement of 60 mm axially and 6 mm radially. Miscible displacement in both thewetting and non-wetting phase has been studied in two-phase systems. Experimental data show that dispersion is a function of saturation and cannot be predicted from dispersion theory developed for single-phase miscible displacement. Some of the effect of saturation on dispersion is a result of the development of dead-end pores or a dendritic pore structure in multiphase systems. The presence of dead-end pores or dendritic structure is confirmed by pressure transient studies. INTRODUCTION Displacement by flooding with a miscible liquid is a possible means for recovering the estimated two-thirds of the oil that remains behind after primary production. The immense economic importance of a process that can recover such large quantities of oil has led to extensive laboratory studies of miscible displacement. As usual in production research, most laboratory studies of miscible displacement have not attemped to reproduce all of the conditions existing in a petroleum reservoir. In the early stages of investigation the need has been for information on the broad, basic principles of the phenomena involved in miscible displacement. The effects of overburden pressure, reservoir temperature, and wettability have been considered of secondary importance. However, one property of a petroleum reservoir which is expected to be of major importance and yet has been omitted from many laboratory studies is the presence of interstitial water. Two possible effects of interstitial water on the displacement mechanism in the hydrocarbon phase immediately come to mind. First, from the general1y accepted theory that capillarity governs the distribution of oil and water in porous rock one would expect that for water-wet rock the water will be in the small pores and oil in the large pores. A miscible displacement of oil carried out in the presence of water is operating in a pore size distribution shown in Fig. lb, whereas if the same test had been performed with only one phase present the pore size distribution is as shown in Fig. la. Although there is not yet a theory of miscible displacement which explains in detail the effect of pore size distribution, one would expect the differences between Figs. la and lb to influence the displacement efficiency. A second factor which may make a multiphase system different from a single-phase system is the presence in the multiphase system of dead-end pores or dendritic structure. Experiments of various kinds on reservoir rock have led to the belief that all pores in the network structure of a porous rock take part in conducting fluid during single phase fluid flow.1,2 There are then no dead-end pores and no fingers or dendritic structures containing stagnant fluid. Domestic operations since V-J day have averaged 92 Per cent of the wartime peak. In spite of maximum foreign refinery runs, large exports of all products, except residual fuel oil, are necessary to meet foreign demand. During the next few years it is expected that foreign operations will continue at capacity, including new installations, but that, because of increases in foreign demand, exports will continue at about their present level. Domestic operations will increase during this period and crude production probably will exceed maximum efficient rates. Even after 10 years some exports probably will be required, but eventually these will be supplanted by increased output of foreign refineries, except for small tributary exports. The increase in domestic requirements will exceed the decline in exports. Unless findings of crude oil exceed present expectations, the increasing demand will be met by increased imports and synthetic methods-—such as the Hydrocarbon Synthesis Process for conversion of natural gas and coal to gasoline and distillates. Catalytic cracking installations will increase as crude availability decreases. This will help to meet the increasing demand for gasoline but will intensify the domestic shortage of residual fuel oil. Eventually larger imports will be required to satisfy the demand for this product. Introduction Under the pressure of the wartime period, there was time only occasionaly to look ahead in anticipation of what the postwar era held for the petroleum industry. Perhaps the general expectation was that a rather pronounced decline in the level of industry petroleum operations would take place shortly after the end of the war, with the impact felt mainly on the economy of the United States- It is of interest now, nine months after V-J day, to take inventory of the near-term situation and see what significant forces are at work. With this as a starting point, it should be possible to engage in something more satisfactory than pure speculation concerning trends in the immediate future and 10 to 20 years ahead. Several of our experiences may be of assistance to those who want to apply the method in these fields. A STRIKING testimonial to the value of safety was contained in an ad- dress given in May, 1936, by A. R. Young, vice-president of the United States Steel Corp.: In the period from 1906 to 1935 we have spent $24,860,540 on safety work. By comparing the cost of "prevented" accidents by the cost of settling similar accidents, we found that we had made a saving of $117,224,238. Even if those figures are 50 per cent wrong, at least we got back every dollar we paid for safety and another with it. I don't think anyone has to blush before his board of directors for an investment of that kind.

US 4,185,078-In the recovery of rhenium values from an aqueous sodium molybdate solution contained in the hydrometallurgical processing of roasted molybdenite, improved results are realized by using a described extractant consisting of a quaternary ammonium compound and benzene or other highly aromatic solvent which dissolves a quaternary ammonium-rhenium complex Essentially all rhenium is recovered from the solution and the extractant can be regenerated and recycled. ON Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 17, a large and interested audience gathered in the auditorium of the Engineering Societies building to take part in the gold supply symposium that had been arranged for by the Mining Geology Committee. Waldemar Lindgren presided over the gathering and after brief introductory remarks on the international situation as regards lead, silver and gold, called on John Wellington Finch to present an oral abstract of the paper, "Sources and Trends in Gold Production," by R. J. Grant, director of the Mint, and. J. B. Knaebel. This ' paper reviewed the gold production of the world, by countries, since 1845, from the statistical viewpoint, leaving to the later speakers discussion of the statistics.

The objective of the research is to determine whether solid-solution strengthening effects observed in dilute solutions of silver can be accounted for by the influence of the solute addition on the dislocation structure oj- the crystals. The additions of both tin and indium produced only small changes in the dislocation densities and arrangements in silver crystals. However, as found previously, small solute additions have large effects on the tensile properties; the inj-luence of the tin and indium additions on the temperature dependence of the flow stress and the easy-glide range is especially strong; It is concluded that the indirect strengthening effect of the solute due to variations in the dislocation density as proposed by Seeger is of minor importance and that solute atom-dislocation interactions are responsible for the observed strengthenirzg effects. The experimental results were combined with those of Rogausch to test the concenlvatiorz dependence of solute strengthening. Both the first and one-half power dependences of the critical resoleed shear stress on concentratiorz fail in very dilute solutions. THE objective of the research is to determine whether solid-solution strengthening effects observed in dilute solutions of silver can be accounted for, at least in part, by the influence of the solute addition on the dislocation structure of the crystals. It is recognized that the addition of solute atoms may influence the strength properties of a metal through both "direct" and "indirect" effects. The former refer to the strengthening mechanisms that result from the interaction of solute atoms with dislocations; in the latter case, the strengthening effects arise as a result of solute's influence on quantities such as dislocation density, dislocation arrangement, stacking-fault energy, diffusivities, the elastic constants, and so forth. It is clear that the correct interpretation of solid-solution strengthening phenomena cannot be given until the importance of indirect strengthening effects is properly evaluated. In the particular case of close-packed metal crystals, Seeger showed that solute strengthening effects in dilute solutions of copper and silver might be accounted for by an increase in dislocation density due to the addition of the solute. Seeger's argument was that the strengthening effects extrapolated from more concentrated solutions indicate that small concentrations of impurities raise the critical resolved shear stress much more than is predicted by a concentration-independent dislocation density. The above idea was a very reasonable one. The dislocation theories of work hardening of Taylor,2 Cot-trell, 3 Mott, 4 and seeger5 had already associated the increased flow stresses with increased dislocation densities in deformed metals; investigations of the dislocation structure of metal crystals had provided a logical basis for expecting an increased dislocation density in crystals containing impurities (see for example, Ref. 6). The numbers involved seem reasonable, too. It can be expected that the flow stress of the crystal would increase as the one-half power of the dislocation density.' Solute additions of 1 at. pct to metal crystals result in strength increases by factors in the range of three to ten. If one assumes that the strengths of the pure metal crystals are determined by their dislocation densities, then dislocation-density increases of one to two orders of magnitude as a result of solute addition would be required to account for the observed strengthening—not an unreasonable expectation. In addition to the effect of the solute addition on dislocation density, one might also anticipate important strengthening contributions to result from the solute's influence on the dislocation arrangement. Parker and washburns have reviewed a number of experimental evidences which show important strengthening effects due to the presence of subboundaries. Further, lattice strains due to impurity segregation would be expected to influence the distribution as well as the dislocation density of the as-grown crystal. As pointed out in the reviews of Chalmers,6 Elbaum,9 and winegard,lo micro segregation of impurities occurs at all interfaces of crystals in cellular growth; the impurity gradient results in lattice strains which can be reduced with the presence of dislocation arrays in the region of the impurity gradient. Hence, one would expect the presence of a solute to favor the formation of dislocation subgrain structures and that the subgrains would have an important influence on the strength of the crystal. The experimental observations that concern the possibility of an important strengthening contribution through the influence of the solute on the dislocation density or arrangement are not in agreement. Haasen has reviewed the observations of Meakin and Wils-dorf,12 Howie,13 and Bocek 36 and concluded that the solute's influence on dislocation density is not sufficient to account for strengthening effects in concentrated solutions but might, as seegerl suggested, make an important contribution in very dilute solutions. On the other hand, Hendrickson and Fine 14 concluded that changes in the dislocation density and dislocation width accounted for the solid-solution strengthening effects observed in silver-based aluminum solid solutions. Flow tests on small core plugs have indicated that a large amount of gas is trapped and not recovered by water flooding a gas sand. Instead of I to 15 per cent pore space, as is usually assumed, the residual gas saturation is 15 to 50 per cent pore space, and is thus of the same magnitude as residual oil after water flooding oil sands. A thorough investigation was made to ascertain that large amounts of residual gas actually remain in reservoirs after a water flood and that this condition is not merely a laboratory phenomenon. In field experiments, the amount of gas left in a watered-out gas sand was measured by use of a pressure core barrel and the residual gas saturation of two watered-out gas sands was determined by electric log evaluation. In the laboratory, an investigation was made of factors that could possibly cause the value of residual gas saturation as measured on small core plugs to differ from that in the reservoir, and the effect of these factors on the amount of residual gas saturation was studied. The factors studied include flooding rate, static pressure, temperature, sample size and saturation conditions before flooding All evidence established that a relatively high gas saturation is trapped in water flooded gas sands and that this residual gas saturation can be measured in the laboratory by tests on small core plugs. INTRODUCTION There. has been general agreement among engineers that very high recovery of gas could be obtained from natural reservoirs By water displacement. Gas recoveries of 80 to 95 per cent of the original gas in place have become the normal expectation in water drive fields. The assumption of high recovery has been based on: 1. low density and viscosity of gas compared with water; 2. the erroneous assumption that the flow relationship in a gas-liquid system where gas is the displaced phase will be the same as when it is the displacing phase. It has long been recognized that gas can flow at very low gas saturations (in the range of 1 to 15 per cent pore space) in systems where liquid is being displaced by gas. By assuming the reversibility of this process, the conclusion was reached that the residual gas saturation following water flooding of a gas reservoir would be the qame (1 to 15 per cent) as that at which gas first flowed continuously as a displacing phase. Recent laboratory relative permeability Studies have demonstrated that the flow characteristics are very different in gas-liquid systems, depending on whether gas is displacing or being displaced by, a liquid. Also, it has been shown that there is no difference between the flow characteristics of oil and water or gas and water in water wet porous rocks. The residual gas saturation that can be expected following water flooding of a gas reservoir then would be in the same range as the residual oil saturation normally expected after water flooding an oil reservoir! i.e., in the range of 15 to 50 per cent pore space, depending on the rock characteristics. Obviously, such a difference in residual gas saturation means very important differences in recoverable gas reserves from water drive reservoirs. For example, if the original gas saturation in a field were 70 per cent, and the residual gas following flooding were 35 per cent, only half of the gas in place could be recovered by complete water drive, compared to the previously expected 80 to 95 per cent. This is a situation in which complete pressure maintenance could result in very greatly reduced recovery, since straight pressure depletion recoveries from gas reservoirs can approach 80 to 90 per cent. Such a change in thinking must be based on more complete information than a series of small core tests. Hence the work reported herein was undertaken with the objective of determining whether or not residual gas saturations indicated from small core relative permeability tests at atmospheric pressure and room temperature are representative of the residual gas saturations which could be expected after water flood of natural reservoirs. A study was made both through laboratory and fields tests to determine any differences in residual saturation which might be occasioned by differences in pressure, temperature, rate of flooding, and original saturation conditions. Four separate types of laboratory experiments and two field mesurements were made in this investigation. The apparatus and testing methods of each will he discussed individually.
