(written discussion *).-Mr. Len-nox's paper is decidedly interesting in that he shows that a field exists for the Chilean mill, in which its efficiency compares favorably with that of more modern grinding devices. The figures he has given clearly indi-cate that a coarse feed is conducive to higher efficiency than the fine feeds which the Chilean mill has usually been called upon to grind. The fact is also apparently indicated that operating the Chilean mill in closed circuit with a mechanical classifier results in still higher efficiency, and that in such cases the percentage of returns should be kept below 100 per cent. to obtain best results. It would be interesting to see the results of further tests with what Mr. Lennox calls "Mixed Feed," since the data given in Table 4 seems to' point to the fact that a mixed feed,

(Read at the Amenia Meeting, October, 1877.) THE existence of iron ore and anthracite coal in the neighborhood of Providence, R. I., has long been known, chiefly as a geological fact; that these materials, so near to each other and to tidewater, are of such a good quality and are present in such large quantity, as to have seriously raised the question of establishing blast furnaces there, was a surprising fact to me; and I have thought that the few notes I have lately gathered on the subject would be of interest at this partly New England meeting. The coal field referred to has an area of above 400 square miles, and is found throughout the belt of transition rocks extending from Newport Neck to Mansfield, Massachusetts. It underlies the cities of Providence and Newport, and the towns of Middletown, Portsmouth, Jamestown, Warwick, Barrington, Cranston, North Provi-

The old De Beers mine, which lies northwest of Dutoitspan mine at Kimberley, was the mine which launched Cecil Rhodes (In his historical career. It was the nucleus of the De Beers Mining Co. Ltd., formed in 1880, which later became De Beers Consolidated Mines Ltd. Inactive for more than a half century, the De Beers Mine is being rejuvenated for a new era of operations. Both mines were on the Vooruitzicht farm owned by the De Beers brothers, who had bought it from the Orange Free State Government ten years previously for £50. Although the brothers sold it soon after the discovery of diamonds at Dutoitspan, they are remembered for having given their name to the foremost diamond mining company in the world. Diamonds worth nearly R180,000,000 have come from this ground, and more will be recovered when the mine is re-opened.

The forty-fifth meeting of the Boston Section was held, at the Engineers' Club, on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 1917. Mr. F. C. Carstarphen, tramway engineer of the American Steel and Wire Co., was the guest of the evening. After dinner, Mr. Carstarphen gave a most interesting illustrated talk on the subject of aerial tramways. The views-showed the various forms of aerial tramways and three' unique installations, one carrying 285 tons of coal an hour, undoubtedly the maximum quantity transported by any tramway up to this time. The second installation is that of a lumber-carrying tramway, 5 miles long, operating in California. The last views illustrated a 13 ½ -mile tramway for carrying salt over the

Cost and price inflation and financial gearing through loans are characteristic of modern resources projects. Conventional discounted cash flow and 1P.R analyses, in real terms, and without financing, have inadequacies which can yield misleading results. The degree of improvement in value for project equity owners is limited to the value of the additional tax benefit accorded through the financing instrument used. Debt financing may be low in price and value, but its priority means that the equity owners assume a higher risk, thereby increasing the cost, or price, of their capital. The cost of equity capital, or investment hurdle rate, is related to the Capital Asset Pricing Model. Distortions do occur, with inflation, due to depreciation effects, which can cause the adoption of misleading project rate of return or hurdle rate criteria. For investment decisions, the greatest accuracy possible in forecasting is essential, especially for inflation rates,

Among the many cases of replacement of one mineral by another, that of quartz or silicates by pyrite, or even other sulphides, is not uncommon, but the reverse of this process does not appear to have been recorded, even if it has been observed. INFORMATION on magnetic properties of minerals other than magnetite is scanty and some- times erroneous. Often there is no information at all. W. R. Crane's table of tractive forces published in 1901 is still the best guide in the field, but Crane's data can be used as a guide only, since he ignored such important factors as impurities in the minerals, size, and packing effect. During the 1930's work by the U. S. Bureau of Mines added greatly to knowledge of the behavior of certain minerals in a magnetic field. The USBM bulletin gave for the first time complete magnetic characteristics for magnetite and fragmentary data for a few other minerals. The work reported here covers a study of the magnetic-susceptibility relationships of the wolf-ramite series of minerals and sphalerites as related to their chemical compositions. Theories are proposed to explain divergences found from commonly accepted beliefs.

An investigation of the defect structure and properties following large strain deformation has been carried out using transmission electron microscopy and mechanical testing for a range of ferrous materials and for copper. It is shown that, for a variety of ferrous materials, a cellular substructure is developed during the initial stages of working and on further deformation the dimensions of this substructure are reduced. Quantitative measurements of the flow stress and the scale of the substructure indicate that the strength of heavily worked materials is largely determined by the spacing of cell walls. These cell walls act as dislocation barriers in a manner analogous to grain boundaries. FCC materials do not harden as extensively as bcc after cold working and the present observations on copper indicate that the dimensions of the substructure in fcc materials are not markedly reduced on deformation. The differences between the fcc and bcc structures produced by large plastic strains are ascribed to differences in the extent of dynamic recovery. It is tentatively proposed that the greater stability of substructural barriers in bcc structures results from strong interstitial Pinning effects. It is proposed that for large plastic strains the work-hardening process may be considered in terms of the reduction of substructural-barrier spacing during the working process. This pvovides a simplified hut useful analysis of the strain hardening occurring during mechanical processes. THE mechanisms of strain-hardening processes have occupied the attention of numerous investigators over the past three decades and a multitude of theories have emerged in this field. The majority of previous work has been concerned with the development of a description of the plastic behavior of single crystals in terms of dislocation theory.'" In contrast, scant attention has been given to the strengthening mechanisms operative during mechanical working processes such as rolling and drawing. The large plastic strains involved in these processes make it difficult to correlate the observations with any elementary dislocation theory. Further, as Bullen and coworkers3 have opined, for large plastic strains both hardening and recovery occur simultaneously and thus it is extremely difficult to estimate the effect of plastic strain on the ambient internal stress field. It is probable that for large plas- tic strains any theoretical estimate of the internal stress field must be made in terms of complex dislocation groups. Although some valuable theoretical work has been done toward calculating the elastic properties of dislocation groups4 any detailed self-consistent model for large plastic strain is as yet impossible. With these limitations in view it is still of value to examine the mechanical properties of highly strained materials as a function of their substructure. This relationship is explored in the present communication for a variety of materials subjected to rolling, drawing, or swaging. The primary object of this investigation has been to establish the validity and the limitations of the substructural strengthening mechanism proposed by Embury and eisher' for drawn pearlitic wire and by Meieran and Thomas for drawn tungsten wire. No attempt has been made to delineate the basic interaction mechanism which occurs between a slip dislocation and the substructure and the authors believe that a great deal more experimental evidence must be compiled before these fundamental aspects can be explored. Also, no specific attention has been given to the detailed formation of substructure during working. Experimental Details. A variety of materials were used in this investigation, the compositions and heat treatment of which are tabulated in Table I. The commercially pure iron is referred to throughout this report as Ferrovac E. The mechanical working processes were all performed at room temperature. The wire drawing was performed on a manual drawing bench. Reductions of between 10 and 20 pct in area per pass were used in both swaging and drawing. The experimental parameter used to evaluate the mechanical properties of the materials was the 0.2 pct proof stress. This was determined for wire samples using an Instron tensile machine at a crosshead speed of 0.02 in. per min. The techniques for preparation of samples for transmission electron microscopy have been described previo~sl~.~ Specimens from wire samples were prepared from longitudinal sections and in some cases from transverse sections. To evaluate the substructural characteristics of rolled materials, thin foil samples were prepared of both the face and edge sections. Results. One of the more familiar ways of expressing work hardening in mechanical working is by the flow stress as a function of reduction in cross-sectional area. Fig. 1 shows such a plot for Ferrovac E eutectoid carbon steel and for copper. The curve for Ferrovac E is characterized by an initial stage of rapid work hardening and a final stage of rapid work hardening separated by an intermediate stage with a low rate of work hardening. This behavior is typical of many ferrous materials and the drawn pearlite wire previously investigated by Embury and Fisher is a more pronounced example. Copper shows an initial

John M. Cairns, in an interesting letter dated June. 19, 1918, tells us of his experiences in Italy. He says, "It may interest you to know I came out to Italy after being on the Afghan frontier of Indian Baluchistan, in August last year, and for some time was posted at Turin as Railway Transport officer. At that time Turin was in the toils of the riots which were the forerunners and preliminaries which led up to the great Italian retreat (Capretto). Since then I have been all over Italy from (deleted by the censor) in Transportation intelligence, and now have just been transferred to the Directorate of Requisitions and Hirings, which now permits great opportunities of going nearly all over Italy (deleted by the censor).
