IN view of the great importance of accurate knowledge respecting the chemistry of iron and steel, as related to their physical properties, I come before you with a paper showing the great mass of work which has been heretofore done on the subject. I have tabulated the more important data I bring at this time, so as to draw out the results clearly. This information is accessible to all who will seek for it. I have made it the basis of my own practice throughout, and such knowledge is undoubtedly the only foundation, for the successful practice of metallurgy. As is well known the ordnance corps of our army, after 1841, made exhaustive experiments on the properties of cast-iron. The investigations were undertaken in order to obtain necessary information on the reorganization of the corps. I wish to call your attention to the results obtained by a comparison of the chemical and physical properties of cast-iron for guns, to describe certain characteristic peculiarities of steel, and to give a brief history of the chemical work relating to carbon in iron. THE Rock Chapel plant of Consolidated Quarries Corporation (Fig, 1) is three miles northeast of Lithonia, DeKalb County, Georgia, It was opened about eight years ago for crushed stone aggregate. This paper reviews a number of experiments that have been tried in drilling and blasting, and gives the practice in use today. The rock worked is a bare dome of granite gneiss about 3000 ft. in diameter, rising 150 ft. above the surrounding ground (Fig. 2). It is uniform in composition and quality, without seams, and extends down-ward to unknown depth below the quarry floor. A water well drilled 600 ft. remained in the same rock. The principal difficulty encountered in blasting is an easy split, which tends to break down the rock in large blocks.

Development of the flotation reagent scheme at Climax Molybdenum Company's mine at Climax Colorado is reviewed. Features of the mineralogy, milling practice and background of reagent changes are outlined. Special attention is given to the hitherto unpublished details of the application of depressants for copper and lead impurities. The present rougher flotation reagent scheme utilizes a neutral hydrocarbon oil, low in unsaturates and wax, as collector with a sulfated coconut oil emulsifier and pine oil frother. Lime and sodium silicate are used as rougher conditioning and slime dispersant agents. Chalcopyrite and galena impurities are depressed in both rougher and cleaner plants by stage addition of Nokes reagent and sodium cyanide to yield a metallurgical grade molybdenite concentrate containing greater than 90% molybdenite and less than 0.5%, 0.1% and 0.05% iron, copper and lead impurities, respectively.

THIS paper by. Georges Ranque is an attempt to reason out the conditions of formation and stability of inclusions and to establish an operative process capable of eliminating or minimizing them. The paper consists of two parts; one in which the author considers the laws of physical chemistry and physics that apply to liquid slag-metal systems and one in which he describes a practice based on the theoretical considerations. Such a paper is bound to contain controversial points and it is therefore your speaker's intention to present Mr. Ranque's side of the picture to the best of his ability without regard for any thoughts or criticisms of his own. RISING VELOCITIES OF INCLUSIONS Most nonmetallic inclusions have densities ranging from about 1.7 to s, while liquid steel has a density of about 7. Under these conditions, ferrostatic pressure should cause the inclusions, being lighter, to rise from the bath and be eliminated. This rising tendency is expressed by Stokes' law, from which may be calculated the rising velocity of a spherical particle in a liquid medium whose density and viscosity are known.

IN looking around me for some subject on which to frame an address for this meeting, it has occurred to me that some results of observation and investigation, in regard to the varied conditions under which gold is found, may possibly prove of interest. The subject is one which frequently crops up in discussions at our meetings, but there is always an immense amount of uncertainty expressed as to the actual condition in which the gold exists in any particular ore. It follows, therefore, that any light which might be shed on this rather complex subject, would be of value to science and of service to mining and metallurgical practice. In some investigations which I have, from time to time, been led to make, for the purpose of determining to what extent an ore might be concentrated, I have been astonished at the very varied and apparently inexplicable results encountered, and have been naturally led to inquire into the causes for such seeming inconsistency. The mines of Gilpin county, Colorado, where gold was first discovered in that State, furnish an infinite variety of examples of its occurrence, and it was here that difficulties first presented themselves to the Colorado miners, in the sudden transition from what is called " free-milling gold-ore " to an ore characterized by properties which make the ordinary treatment by amalgamation stamp-mills utterly impracticable. So long as mining was limited to what might be called the zone of oxidation in the veins, just so long might amalgamation be conducted without difficulty; but directly the miner reached a point beyond the influence of the oxidizing power of the surface waters, the gold resisted all attempts at amalgamation, and recourse • was had to smelting.

The International Nickel Co., Ontario Div. mines, faced with rising production requirements, short labor supply, and ever increasing labor costs turned to mechanized mining for a solution to its problems. The degree of mechanization of ore removal has increased from 1966 with the purchase of the first diesel-powered load-haul-dump (LHD) machine to the present, with over 53% of all underground production handled by these units. Keeping pace with mechanized ore removal, there has been a parallel development of drilling equipment to complement the mucking units. This paper deals with the applications and economic advantages of mechanized drilling at the underground mines of Inco, Ontario Div. It covers the use of various types of mechanized drills in such mining methods as cut-and-fill, induced block caving, and sublevel caving. The economics of raise boring are also discussed.

Barite deposits occur in the Iglesiente-Sulcis district of southwestern Sardinia, an historically important lead-silver-zinc district. Barite, often genetically associated with the base metal deposits, has become an independently important economic commodity. Barite deposition in southwestern Sardinia was related to Caledonian, Hercynian, and Alpine orogenic cycles. A model is presented that relates synsedimentary, karstic, vein, and residual deposits. Synsedimentary deposits are widespread, have common depositional characteristics, and act as sources, along with hydrothermal systems, for other barite deposit types. Caledonian-, Hercynian-, and Alpine-related secondary enrichment processes resulted in residual and karstic deposits that are complex in terms of their geometry and texture, but are more economically important than those of synsedimentary or hydrothermal origin.

(San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) IN any discussion of this very large subject we are confronted at the outset with so many obstacles that at best only a fragmentary and rather disconnected presentation can be made of it, and my hope is that building from the few facts I have to offer a more complete knowledge may be secured. In the whole intermountain and Pacific. Coast region, west of Pueblo, Col., and from Canada to Mexico, there is no production of pig iron, and steel production is confined to the manufacture of a small amount of open-hearth steel from scrap. When we consider the area, the resources, and the several centers of population, this condition seems anomalous, even in. the face of every counter argument as to cheap water transportation, or other means of transport from the Atlantic Seaboard or from the iron and steel centers of the Middle West. This comatose condition, if such a term may be applied, is certainly riot due to a lack of all the essential materials and factors for success in iron and steel smelting, but is rather, I think, due largely to the general fact that it is only within a comparatively few years that the centers of population on the Pacific Coast have attained a size that would entitle them to the position of distributing or freight centers, or that the "back country" has been enough built up to make it sufficiently interesting to the railroads to foster trade from the local centers to the interior points rather than seek to supply such local centers and the interior by a transcontinental haul.

Kansas produced 38,150,878 bbl. of oil in 1928 and 40,658,170 bbl. in 1929, thereby retaining its rank as fourth among the oil-producing states of this country. Production for 1928 was less than that for 1927 (Fig. 1) because of a decrease in the number of completions, but the average initial production per well (Table 1) shows an increase due to the completion of wells of comparatively large capacity in the new Valley Center pool of Sedgwick County. This increase in average initial production per well was further augmented during 1929 by completion of additional wells of comparatively large capacity in the Valley Center pool and the new Greenwich pool of Sedgwick County. In the second half of the 19th century, bimetallism progressively was replaced by gold standard. After World War I and the 1931-33 depression, gold was mainly reserved for official international transactions and internal use was restricted. Changes since 1971 have shrunk official international use of gold. International payments deficits and surpluses are now financed by Private and official credit, rarely by gold. This historical review covers evolution of: (1) internal and external private use, (2) internal official use, (3) external official use, (4) its role in the International Monetary Fund, and (5) use as unit of account. For this paper I have tried to take a longer perspective than is usually possible, and to look, even if very briefly, at the changing relationship of gold to the monetary system over the last 200 years or so. There are, I believe, some long-term trends, continuing down to the present day. These trends have seen gold replaced by some form of paper assets in one monetary function after another. These past trends may help us to understand where gold stands now, and possibly will throw some light on the future. Because it seems to me that gold in the past has performed various functions related closely or marginally to money, I have divided this rapid historical review into several sections: (1) the internal and external private use of gold, (2) the internal official use of gold, (3) the external official use of gold, (4) gold and the International Monetary Fund, and (5)gold as a unit of account.

INTRODUCTION The Tsumeb Mine is situated in the northern part of South West Africa, approximately 335 air miles north-east of the port of Walvis Bay on the Atlantic Coast, and 240 air miles north of Windhoek, the capital of South west Africa. The mine came into operation in the early 1900's and has operated continuously since then except during the two world warm and the depression years of the thirties, Tsumeb Corporation purchased the property in 1947, installed a new plat, and ham built a modern tom. In addition to the concentrator which began operations in 1948, a copper smelter was started in 1962 and a lead smelter in 1963, Tonnage of ore treated in the concentrator has varied through the years, reaching a maximum of 70,000 tons per month with a current mined tonnage of approximately 50,000 tons per month. Copper concentrates, lead concentrates and zinc concentrates are produced, and for a number of years the production of a germanium enriched concentrate was an important feature of the operation, Both copper and lead concentrates are smelted in Tsumeb, while the zinc concentrates are shipped overseas. Ore change, and the installation of the smelters in Tsumeb have necessitated modifications in the concentrator operation. Depression of galena by sulfite or chromate ion in xanthate flotation was investigated by means of adsorption measurements, electron diffraction and flotation tests. Flotation of galena was depressed by sulfite ion only when galena had been oxidized; no depression took place with unoxidized clean galena. A similar behavior was found when chromate ion was used as a depressant, with the exception that the chromate ion depressed unoxidized clean galena around neutral pH. Depression was attained with galena on which xanthate still remained in appreciable amounts, indicating that the depression is not due to a decrease in xanthate adsorption. The galena surface produced sparingly soluble films under conditions in which depression of galena took place. These films were identified by electron diffraction as lead sulfite and lead chromate on oxidized galena and as chromic oxide on unoxidized clean galena. These observations in conjunction with contact angle measurements, indicate that the depressing action of sulfite or chromate ion arises primarily from film deposition resulting from the reaction between depressants and the galena surface. The thickness of the film was analyzed by means of electrochemical polarization.

An experimental study is discussed of the state of strain, deformation and fracture around lined and unlined cylindrical cavities in rock under biaxial compressive static loading. The specimens were limestone plates 36 in. high, 24 in. wide and 3 in. thick with a 4 in. diameter hole unlined or lined with hydrostone and aluminum liners. The ratio of horizontal to vertical applied stress was one-third. Experimental techniques used were strain gages, differential transformers and photoelastic coatings. Strain distributions were plotted along the horizontal axis of symmetry for various levels of applied stress. The agreement with theory was good at low stress levels but appreciable deviations occurred at higher levels and near the hole. The experimental strain concentration factor was nearly the same, slightly higher and appreciably higher than the theoretical value for the hydrostone-lined, unlined and aluminum-lined specimens, respectively. Failure modes were splitting along a vertical plane for the unlined and hydrostone-fined specimens, compressive (shear) failure for one unlined specimen and splitting with radial cracking for the aluminum-lined specimen. In the latter, a maximum tensile stress of more than three times the uniaxial tensile strength existed at the interface with the liner at the time of fracture,

As is well known, many questions affecting the properties and uses of a metal cannot be answered without careful consideration of the state of purity realized in the various operations of preparation, refining, or special treatment that have brought the product to its final state. The occurrence of an impurity in minute quantity offers no guarantee that its effect will be inconsiderable because dissolved substances often modify the properties of a metal quite out of proportion to their concentration. In such cases the determination of solid solubility must be accepted as a problem of considerable difficulty, requiring the use of especially purified materials and methods not ordinarily used in the metallurgical laboratory. This aspect of the equilibrium between metals and their oxides is especially important and a search for fundamental data reveals little except conflicting opinion even concerning the systems of common occurrence and interest. Rhines and Mathewson1 in 1934 studied the solubility of oxygen in solid copper by annealing to equilibrium in air and gave reasons for the failure of other methods, notably the ordinary procedure of heat-treatment followed by microscopic examination, to yield reliable results. In this paper, a similar study has been made of the solubility of oxygen in cobalt. The simple theory of this method is outlined below.
