A mineral grain finder is described which is easily constructed to fit onto the stage of a standard reflected light ore microscope.The device is most useful in relocating particular grains or mineral associations on 30 mm diameter polished sections. The use of the grain finder in the teaching of ore microscopy is outlined.

Although the majority of current steel production is supported by iron ore sourced from high-grade haematite deposits, the long-term growing demand for steel has led to higher raw material prices and opened the way for many new magnetite deposits to also be developed. There is a rich and long history of magnetite ore processing in Western countries, including large operations such as Cleveland Cliffs in the USA and LKAB in Sweden, as well as smaller operations like Savage River in Tasmania. The challenge for virtually all magnetite operations is to minimise operating costs, which is dominated by the cost of power required to fine grind the ore in order to achieve acceptable concentrate iron grade together with low impurity content. This remains the case today and will be even more important in the future when a carbon tax is expected to become a significant addition to the operating costs for magnetite deposits. Historically, the lowest operating cost was achieved by multistage fully autogenous grinding with integrated magnetic separation steps between the stages. The major benefit of fully autogenous grinding is the elimination of steel grinding media costs and the need to discriminate between steel and magnetite in coarse magnetic separation. The separation step between grinding stages progressively reduces the amount of material to be ground. Application of more efficient grinding technologies developed in the last 20 years, including high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) for fine crushing and stirred milling for fine grinding, has provided opportunities to further reduce the operating costs associated with comminution. Both technologies are already implemented in some magnetite processing operations, although in limited capacity. The results of a theoretical option study for high capacity processing of a hard, fine-grained silica-rich magnetite ore is presented in this paper, with the emphasis on comminution circuit options. Several circuit options are ranked based on a net present value analysis incorporating an estimate of carbon tax added in the operating cost. The study demonstrates the significant advantages of applying more efficient autogenous grinding technologies.

Thank you for the invitation to address The AusIMM Young LeadersÆ Conference here today. When I first saw the conference theme û æadvancing technologies and their future applications in the mining industryÆ û my interest was sparked because there is little doubt that technology and technological advances will determine the relevance of this industry in the future. And the people seated here today are major players in determining the minerals industryÆs destiny.During my 20-year association with the mining industry, I have observed a number of significant changes that have been delivered as a result of the vision of technical specialists. These changes have built a more competitive industry, a more socially acceptable industry and most importantly an industry with ever-improving safety performance. The purpose of my address is to attempt to provide a context and foundation for other presenters over the following two days. Today, I wish to try to answer the question, æWhy do we invest in new technology in the mining industry?Æ, via: a brief history lesson, a review of the needs of the business, a look at the process for improvement, and finally an example from WMC ResourcesÆ current technology portfolio. I would like to take a very brief walk back in time. During the iron and bronze ages, whilst our ancestors IÆm sure never spoke the phrase ænecessity is the mother of inventionÆ, I am sure they lived by it. Undoubtedly more so than we do today. The roots of geology, mining and extractive metallurgy grew out of the need for better tools in order to get access to the basic necessities of life. It was their superior ability to generate and deliver these ætechnologyÆ improvements that underpinned great civilisations such as the Egyptians, Romans and Incas. The application of mineral technology improvements by these civilisations was crucial to their success, it was their competitive advantage at the time. Many historical texts include detailed descriptions of both mining and processing fundamentals that formed the basis of many of todayÆs operations and processes. However, it is technological improvements to these fundamentals, as well as the development of new technologies, that have preserved the fundamentals as viable options for the industry today. Even in my time in the industry, there have been substantial improvements in the way business processes operate. When I first started working in a gold mine in WA in the late 1980s, the office had one PC (a 286 processor). All data was managed by paper and then often re-typed into other databases. Electronic mine design and process control was in its infancy. Today, massive amounts of data are recorded, analysed and acted upon almost without any human interaction. Our industry today has far different challenges than those described by Argricola. These are many and diverse, but new technologies are required to address three distinct classes of need: 1. Societal needs: physical needs for food, shelter, recreation and leisure; community and political needs for less waste, less emissions, better safety and working conditions, less energy consumption and sustainability. 2. Individual needs: intellectual needs to create innovative technical and organisational ideas. 3. Wealth generation needs: investor needs for maximising operating efficiency and value growth. Each new technology, to varying degrees, fulfils one or all of these needs. In many cases, the driver of a technological development was to fulfill only one of these needs, but after it was implemented, the development actually fulfilled each need. This paper discusses the operating model within Endeavour Mining Corporation regarding the options of owner mining against contract mining. It’s based on the concept of ‘are we carrying out the most efficient mining’ regarding cost and performance. This question can only be answered through an extensive contract mining tender process and conducting a comprehensive comparison to evaluate the transition viability. Karma mine, located in Burkina Faso, is the subject of this paper. The Tender model included sales of equipment, parts and tooling associated with the traditional Load and Haul Schedule of Rates (SOR). The methodology focused on the structure of the tender process, which consists in the development of a SOR based on haulage profiles and mining schedule. This is a new Endeavour framework that allowed the bidders to compete on an even level. This was performed using a systemic analysis which encompassed all the elements involved in a transition such as the Human Resources (HR), taxes and customs implications, directs and non-direct costs (Finance and interest on assets, depreciation, insurance), contractor risk profiling. It was assessed against the normalised internal pricing tender-based. This paper gives an insight into how a West African mining operation addressed the sensitivities of the HR functions against the commercial aspects. This was one of the most successful transitions in West Africa and was carried out during the COVID crisis. The outcome of this project has created value by detailing a lesson learned model for both commercial and HR aspects. This discusses the commercial comparisons along with the internal model with the underlying HR functions as a risk factor that could have jeopardised the continuation of the operation. This resulted in a smooth transition with the additional cash flow generated by the sale of the parts and equipment turned Karma into a viable operation.

In this paper we present a case study of the challenges and opportunities associated with the development of cultural heritage management strategies at the Lihir gold mine in Papua New Guinea. We discuss the contextual drivers and constraints, and outline the ways in which Lihir Gold Limited is aiming to set new industry bench marks for the region through the development of values-based best practice cultural heritage management programs. This approach is largely based upon a compliance partnership with a local stakeholder group. We argue that such partnerships are a prudent means of mitigating company risk, while constituting a far more necessary tool for local people in the reconceptualisation and negotiation of the experiences of significant social change and modernisation experienced in the context of recent resource development.

The use of cemented rock fill (CRF) for support of open stope walls has increased in the Australian underground mines operations over the last five years due in part to its low capital cost. In open stoping the exposed CRF masses require adequate strength and stiffness, in order to resist the forces and to limit the displacement associated with movements in the rock mass surrounding the excavations. The CRF material preparation often involves the use of large particles, either from crushed rock or from development mining waste sometimes up to 1 m in diameter. However, the use of waste rock, which has a poorly graded particle size distribution may not achieve the required minimum target strength due to segregation and large air voids within the fill mass. This paper describes the optimisation of CRF strength by either crushing the waste rock or the addition of sand to the mix. Both methods increase the level of fines in the mix design. Cylindrical samples having 400 mm diameter and 800 mm heights were prepared for uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) testing. The UCS test was determined using the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) large-scale static test frame. The laboratory results were compared with a database of large-scale CRF strength mixed without sand from a number of mine sites around Australia. The comparison shows a significant strength development in the CRF mixing with addition of sand for a given cement percentage. Due to the higher strengths achieved by the addition of sand and the crushing of the waste material these CRF types require less cement to achieve the same strength. Rotary kilns have been in service in the gold industry to regenerate carbon for 65 years. At the time oxide ores with gold head grades of 8 to 10 g/t were being treated. Carbon could be regenerated adequately at 650°C and solution losses were less than 1%. Forty years ago, research indicated that heavily fouled carbon from flotation circuits had to be held at 750 to 850°C for ten to twenty minutes for full reactivation (Avraamides and La Brooy, 1987), gold head grades were typically 5 g/t and solution losses typically 0.02 ppm – still less than 1%. In 2017 it was determined (Claflin et al., 2017) that a residence time of less than 1 minute at 750°C can be adequate to reactivate carbon fouled with organics sufficiently to achieve 0.005 ppm solution losses in a flotation tailings leach plant.With the potential for discovery head grades to drop below 0.6 g/t, solution losses of 0.02 ppm represent over 3% loss. Tight operation of the whole carbon circuit is required to keep gold solution losses below 1% going forward.There are alternatives to a rotary carbon kiln, e.g. vertical kilns of which the Minfurn, Rintoul and Combustion Air kilns are examples. The alternative kilns can be heated using electrical heating elements, induction, and microwave. These kilns can operate successfully under the right conditions, however, they are almost exclusively for small carbon throughputs and are not suitable for the large carbon advance rates that are required to process low head grade ore deposits. Large throughput carbon kilns are are almost exclusively fossil fuel fired rotary kilns and the subject of this paper. In the view of the principal author, a fossil fuel fired vertical carbon kiln is preferred to a rotary kiln, however, it is not currently used in the industry.Thermal regeneration of activated carbon has a major impact on gold recovery in the carbon circuit. The carbon kiln and associated equipment constitute 3 to 5% of the capital cost for an oxide processing plant and up to 10% of the capital cost if flotation tails are leached. Despite the capital cost and impact on recovery, the carbon kiln is often poorly selected, operated and maintained.Six years ago Ausenco embarked on the Carbon Kiln Initiative to reduce solution gold losses. This body of knowledge has been published in a series of papers culminating in this paper on how to:1. Select a kiln appropriate for the flowsheet;2. Gold miners have been underperforming the price of gold for a number of years. So why has the æmarketÆ undervalued our gold miners relative to what they have been mining? The low valuation ascribed to gold mining companies is largely attributable to their profit performance. In the period since 2006 the price of gold in A$ has risen about $900/oz, but the real cash margin (operating cash costs + cost of finding and/or acquiring deposits + the cost of bringing them into production) has only risen about A$100. Rising operating costs are a major part of this reduction in real margin. Energy and labour costs have risen more than the inflation rates across a number of countries as have taxes, royalties, etc. There are however, more significant contributors to the rising cost base. Firstly, in 2006 the average gold grade was 2.0 g/t; today it is 1.3 g/t. Secondly, strip ratios (for surface mines) have increased by 19 per cent during this time. Open cut mining equipment unit output across the world has dropped by 26 per cent during 2006 - 2012. Finally, costs have risen by 55 per cent during this time period. Consequently, there is now 3.8 times more mining cost required to produce an ounce of gold from surface mines compared with 2006. The decline in gold grade looks to be a permanent trend as does increasing strip ratio if output is to be maintained. Costs will continue to rise although cost control will be necessary. Reversing the decline in equipment performance and closing the gap between median and best practice provides the hope for a sustainable reversal of cost increases. The current gap between best practice and median performance has grown to 112 per cent for mining trucks, 168 per cent for excavators and 169 per cent for front end loaders. It is the purpose of this paper to produce some evidence on the accuracy to be expected from normal assay procedure using the usual first class equipment, and to examine the effect that many assaying inaccuracies have on reported metallurgical recoveries.Generally speaking, the evaluation of the gold content of a mineral ore sample by the fire assay method is a relatively simple process.A weighed quantity of finely ground ore is fused with suitable fiuxes including litharge and a reducing agent to give a button of lead and a quantity of slag. The shower of lead produced by the reduction of the added litharge collects the gold and silver present in the ore, concentrating the values into the lead button.The button of lead, after separation from the slag, is, on heating in an absorbent cupel in a current of air, reoxidised to litharge and absorbed into the cupel leaving a gold and silver bead in the cupel. This bead' is heated in a solution of nitric acid to dissolve the silver, leaving the gold undissolved to be dried and weighed. Knowing the original weight of the ore and the weight of the gold prill the value of the ore is easily calculated.Summarising1. Fusion Process.-Ore plus fiuxes give a slag plus lead button.2. The sustainable management of surface water associated with coal mining and coal seam gas projects is a considerable factor affecting the global competitiveness of these resource companies operating in Australia. Management of surface water can be costly, but effective water management and hence environmental stewardship enhances corporate social responsibility and the social license to operate. The surface water issues for the two industries are comparable, yet there is currently a lack of alignment between how Queensland, where the majority of AustraliaÆs coal seam gas projects are located, manages and regulates water on coal mine projects and coal seam gas projects.This paper provides a high level comparison of Queensland legislation and highlights the lack of alignment of this legislation regarding surface water management in these two industries. Through a case study, it looks at the surface water management process at a coal mine site based on the current legislation and principals of surface water management. QueenslandÆs lack of alignment in legislation regarding surface water management in these industries is understandable given the different development paths and time scales of the two industries. The coal mining industry has developed over a long period of time and the legislation has progressed in parallel, whereas, the coal seam gas industry is relatively new in Australia and the legislation has had to advance quickly. The lack of alignment between management of surface water for the two industries creates confusion among stakeholders and this adds complexity and additional transaction costs during the exploration, permitting and operational phases of projects, including landowners who may be affected.CITATION:Bennett, C, Coffison, E and Gibbs, M, 2013. Best practice for the submission of samples to an internal or commercial laboratory requires quality control materials to be included for the purpose of independently and comprehensively assessing laboratory performance. These quality controls include the use of certified reference materials (CRMs) and may be blind to the laboratory. Iron ore companies purchase these materials from reputable manufacturers from stock of run-of-mine materials at the appropriate grades. The international standard, ISO 17034 (ISO, 2016), specifies the competency requirements for organisations manufacturing reference materials, and includes rigorous requirements for the assessment of homogeneity, stability and establishment of property values and their uncertainties. Homogeneity is one of the most important measures of suitability for all certified reference materials and refers to the degree to which the composition and properties of a sample are uniform throughout the batch, relative to the analytical precision of the method. More specifically, homogeneity studies of candidate reference materials should be assessed for both within sample variance and between sample variance with appropriate statistical controls. The design and application of homogeneity studies are discussed as they apply to both crushed and pulverised reference materials. Crushed certified reference materials have been utilised by the iron ore industry for a number of years and provide the user with a critical assessment of variances in sample preparation in addition to analysis. Crushed reference materials are similar in presentation to an RC sample and are generally used as discrete parcels of material submitted to the laboratory from the field. Pulverise certified reference materials miss the sample preparation step and are subsampled from th delivered sachet at the point of analysis. This paper compares the relative homogeneity performance of crushed and pulverised certified reference materials by grade across key iron ore chemical constituents. Outcomes are benchmarked to the international standard ISO 9516 (ISO, 2003) for the determination of various elements in iron ores by lithium borate fusion and X-ray fluorescence. Practical implications are discussed with reference to a case study from an iron ore laboratory in the Pilbara.

Australia has seen unprecedented demand for coal exports in the last ten years and this demand is set to expand further still according to many analysts. This rapid increase in demand has placed pressure on multi-user coal chains to guarantee the capability to meet the required demand, in terms of both current operations and capacity expansion.The projects required to deliver these forecast tonnages take place in an increasingly complex commercial and technical environment. These challenges include brownfield and greenfield projects, multiple rail and terminal service providers as well as a myriad of mine operators, all needing to operate in an increasingly integrated manner to get the most out of expensive shared assets.Increasing complexity and integration drives the need for more holistic and sophisticated analysis tools. The capacity of coal chain subsystems, such as mine, rail and port, can no longer be determined effectively in isolation. Understanding the nature of the interactions between these subsystems and the resultant capacity of the integrated system is the key to maximising value. TSG advocates the use of a total integrated system approach to understand the behaviour and performance of complex coal chains.Recently, TSG has worked in conjunction with the Integrated Logistics Company and a number of stakeholders in the Dalrymple Bay Coal Chain to deliver the first independent system master plan. This master plan has provided a quantitative and rational assessment of coal chain capacity in its current state and a prediction of its capacity once a pipeline of committed capacity improvements is in place. It is underpinned by a highly detailed discrete-event simulation model of the complete coal chain as an integrated system, including mine load-outs, rail, terminal and port operations.This paper provides an overview of the study and describes the differences between subsystem and total integrated system model performance.

Petroleum exploration in onshore Gippsland was directed in the 1950s and 1960s towards plays in the basal Latrobe and Strzelecki Groups, but these became forgotten in the 1970s with the Latrobe play discoveries offshore. The principal explorationists of the time were Woodside Oil and Arco Ltd, who then departed the scene after drilling some 18 wells without major success. In the late-1980s successful hydrocarbon finds in equivalent age Otway Group sediments in the Otway Basin were made and in early 1990 Tyers Petroleum began investigations into Strzelecki Group prospects as applied to the onshore Gippsland Basin. Some 18 anticlines have been mapped, based on shallower coal exploration drilling in the Latrobe Group, which from seismic and gravity evidence are believed to unconformably overlie similar anticlinal structures in the underlying Strzelecki Group. Strzelecki targets of interest within drilling depth are the basal Tyers Conglomerate/Rintouls Creek Sandstone Formations which outcrop in the north of the Latrobe Valley and are analogous to the Pretty Hill Sandstone in the Otway Basin. In addition, intra-Strzelecki Group targets similar to Heathfield and Windermere Sandstone Members are also considered to be present. Good source rocks are abundant including coal seams and carbonaceous sediments of Neocomian and Jurassic age, which lie within the oil window. Seal is provided by the overlying Aptian-Albian aged volcanogenic sediments. The Tyers/Rintouls sandstones - a target in the Woodside/Arco wells, with two exceptions, were not reached. Encouraging intra-Strzelecki shows were reported in many of the wells. Basal and intra-Strzelecki porous quartzose sandstones remain one of the few untested plays left in the Gippsland Basin and, in the onshore, merit extra attention as they he within the oil window at economically drillable depths.

Certain copper ores from the Nchanga Copper Mine in the northern Zambia Copperbelt are refractory with respect to conventional beneficiation techniques. This paper reviews recent study of those ores to determine their mineralogy, textures and nature of copper occurrence. Two suites of refractory ores were selected for study: 1.  samples of stockpiled ores from an open pit, and 2.  drill core samples from copper ores. Both sample suites are from the upper orebody at Nchanga and contain about 0.3 - 1.4 per cent copper as determined by atomic absorption, but they represent separate stratigraphic, mineralogical and beneficiation problems. Ore microscopic examination showed that fine-grained copper sulfides are totally lacking from both suites of refractory ores. Petrographic study found malachite in the refractory ores from the open pit, but that malachite probably is post-mine. The opaque mineralogy of the open pit refractory ores is dominated by goethite that occurs mostly as pseudomorphic grains after pyritohedral pyrite crystals that average 200 - 250 ¦m across. Haematite occurs as bands within or as outer shells of the goethite grains. Additional goethite occurs locally as finer-grained areas of exotic goethite. The opaque minerals in the drill core refractory ores are dominated by euhedral ilmenite crystals about 50 - 175 ¦m long. Anatase is the dominant opaque mineral in some drill core samples where it is largely pseudomorphic after ilmenite crystals. Goethite accompanies malachite in unusual drill core refractory ores that have experienced intense hydrothermal alteration. Thus, ore microscopy and petrography showed that fine-grained chalcopyrite and bornite and pre-mine malachite were not the causes of the refractory nature of the ores studied. Electron microprobe revealed that most of the copper occurred in solid solution within micas. Application of automated SEM techniques has provided a detailed understanding of the distribution of copper in these refractory ores.

Open pit mine enterprises are complex systems that depend on multiple parameters such as mineral grade distribution, geotechnical characteristics, economic conditions and engineering requirements, all of which vary in time and space with a different degree of uncertainty. The unpredictable nature of these inputs imposes a risk to mine owners and shareholders which in the worst case can lead to highly undesirable financial outcomes.Desktop studies commonly examine a set of scenarios based on adjusting variables such as commodity prices, mining costs, processing costs, and metal recoveries to understand their relative impact on the economics of a project. It is less common to systematically explore and simulate hundreds of alternative physical designs to understand and compare the financial risk associated with one or more mining projects.This paper presents a risk assessment tool set and methodology that uses web based cloud computing to enable multiple simulations of mine designs to be rapidly and efficiently executed. The methodology includes generating random sets of prices and costs values within their respective probability distributions. Pit designs are then created to maximise the profit for each set of input variables. Various approaches to analysing the results are discussed. A study was made of zircon powders bonded with phosphoric acid or aluminium orthophosphate. The influence of strength of solution of the phosphatic binders on the modulus of rupture over a temperature range was investigated. Physical properties of three grades of zircon powder bonded with phosphatic binders were studied at various temperatures. Examination of x-ray diffraction data indicated that phosphates ofzirconia are preferentially formed to phosphates of silica. However, zircon in the presence of excess phosphoric acid also forms phosphates of silica upon heating.Resistance to attack by slags from blast and open hearth furnaces was determined on phosphate-bonded zircon mortars in a cup test with industrially made ladle bricks. Zircon powders bonded with phosphates proved to have high P.C.E. values. The first satisfactory results of a plant trial with phosphate-bonded zircon mortar, used in a steel ladle, are now being assessed in larger scale industrial tests prior to accepting the mortar as a steel plant refractory.

Resonance re-emission from nickel vapour affords a convenient method for isolating the resonance lines at 3415A, 3515A, and 3524A. The vapour is generated by cathodic sputtering and is illuminated by light from a nickel atomic spectral lamp. The resonance lines thus isolated can be usefully employed for absorption measurements on mineral samples where the nickel concentration is too high for measurements with the more sensitive line at 2320A. A spectrophotometer employing a resonance lamp as monochromator possesses several advantages where a great number of determinations are made under routine conditions. The wavelength setting is stable under even the most rigorous conditions and with the provision for automatic setting of full scale deflection the instrument requires virtually no adjustment. The instrument has been used under routine conditions for the determination of nickel (in the range O· 05-2 per cent) in mineral samples.

Mill operating teams are expected to engage in a perpetual quest for process improvement – pushing the boundaries of practical process limits and testing new technology to achieve the next step-change in plant performance. Often the barrier to improvement lies in gaining management approval for process changes.Getting approval for investment in novel technology carries an added degree of difficulty, particularly in risk-averse operations, when it challenges conventional wisdom. A case in point is a new technology for controlling variability in slurry distribution. There is a widely held view that less-than-specified classification efficiency and spraying and roping of individual units in a hydrocyclone cluster, must be accepted as unavoidable. That these are wholly correctable deficiencies resulting from unequal loading of the individual units seems a bold claim. Wouldn’t the high turbulence of pumped slurries overcome all potential for segregation of solids? This paper discusses how the task of developing confidence in a new technology can be approached by a combination of physical modelling at small scale, and full-scale operating experience. Proving efficacy then leads to the next task: demonstrating value. Again, the particular technology serves as an example that could be of value to others developing relatively low-cost technologies. A high-pay-off as an investment may be achieved with improvements in metallurgical performance that are small in relation to normal process variations. This has led to an exploration of how process simulation modelling could be used, in conjunction with production data, to provide a benchmark for the expected change, which could be expressed in monetary terms.The next goal, which is currently being achieved in operating plants, is to realise the greater value now available through the optimisation of cyclone configuration, which becomes practical when the confounding effects of cluster instability are removed through equal loading.CITATION:Doig, S G, Algie, S H, Lovatt, I A and Knoblauch, E J, 2018. The modern resource extraction enterprise is a complex capital intensive business operating in a world of constantly evolving social, environmental and economic scrutiny. Investors, government, media and special interest groups expect to see business environmental and social performance respond and deliver increasing corporate responsibility and sustainability.   Thorough interrogation of business performance using a multi-disciplinary due diligence approach presents a more sophisticated review and benefits beyond the traditional compliance/conformance 'audit' style assessment.   Using a due diligence approach allows assessment through a comprehensive lens which examines potential short- and long-term risks including sometimes less tangible environmental and social liabilities, and informs management, investors and regulators of broader business performance. This approach provides information in a form that business can measure performance in a repeatable and enterprise wide sense.   This paper provides an outline of the due diligence process applied in this way, drawing from lessons learnt and industry based experiences in the due diligence process and the benefits and tools that can  be applied in an environmental and social due diligence business performance assessment

Melbourne Water Corporation, through the Pipelines Alliance, has commenced construction of a new drainage pipeline to provide additional flood protection within the Sandgate Avenue Main Drain catchment, in order to mitigate against the risk of flooding of Frankston’s central activity district (CAD).The project involves the construction of a 1550 m long, 2.5 m internal diameter tunnel, commencing upstream at the Monash University Peninsula Campus and traversing approximately west to the outlet located at Kananook Creek. The tunnel was excavated by a dual slurry-earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine (TBM), with the depth to tunnel crown ranging from 0.7 m to 14 m below the natural surface level. The TBM navigated 500 m radius curves, with a maximum drive length of 608 m. The tunnel lining consists of 2.5 m internal diameter, 250 mm thick reinforced concrete jacking pipe.The geotechnical conditions along the tunnel alignment consisted of mixed face ground conditions, predominately clay, with clayey sand and sandy clay and some sand deposits near Kananook Creek.This paper presents the challenges associated with the operation of the slurry separation plant during tunnel construction. In particular, the paper focuses the impact of slurry separation on tunnel advance rates, the lessons learnt during construction with regards to slurry separation and on the decision to adopt a dual slurry-earth pressure balance shield TBM. In addition this paper highlights the importance of having a thorough understanding of the slurry separation requirements on a slurry TBM project prior to selecting the necessary plant.
