A major high grade zinc deposit, Dugald River has fine-grained and complex mineral associations which provide considerable metallurgical challenges for both mineral dressers and downstream processors. A long history of metallurgical testing focusing on mineralogy and flotation concentrate production has shown that while separate lead and zinc concentrates can be produced at saleable grades, high levels of iron, and particularly manganese, are likely to place constraints on the marketing of zinc concentrate produced from deeper zones where coincidentally lode development is at its maximum. Testwork has focused on characterising the flotation response of ore types ranging from banded and stringer sulphides to brecciated ores in a variety of sulphide matrices. A high level of variability with lower than expected metal recoveries has been indicated across some of the higher grade brecciated ores. However, the dominant slatey breccia has generally provided the best results. Heavy media preconcentration testwork has been moderately encouraging and at this stage, although value adding downstream of concentrate production on-site is not seen as an economic option processing developments are being monitored on a broad front. Providing satisfactory means can be developed for handling manganese during downstream processing of the concentrate, it is not difficult to see a world-class operation emerging from the resource in the medium-term Future.

During the last fifteen years there has been a marked change in the demand and supply patterns of coking coal. The world demand, predominantly Japan, has increased from 23 million tonnes of world export/import coal in 1960 to an expected total of at least 100 million tonnes by 1975. In the last ten years Australia has been the main beneficiary in the growth of the export coal trade. This has been brought about by its proximity to Japan and its large econ- omically mineable reserves of coking coal. A feature of the recent coal development in Australia has been the requirement of companies in new areas to provide massive capital for infrastructure costs. The ability of the Australian coal industry to retain a large share of the world export market depends to a large extent on reasonable costs to transport coal from mine to the market place. In some areas of Australia this means that railway lines, loading and unloading facilities, and ports will have to be up-dated at substantial costs. In this study the light sparse phase search (SPL_Lt) mode on the Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA) was successfully used to identify and quantify the abundance of rare earth element (REE) phosphates in Precambrian iron formations. Monazite (light REE phosphate) and xenotime (Y and heavy REE phosphate) are identified and data from the MLA combined with the mineral chemistry of the two minerals are used to calculate and model the expected REE concentration and distribution in these two REE phosphates. The REE phosphates account for up to 31 per cent of the REEs in the banded iron formations (BIFs) and excellent correspondence is observed between the modelled REE patterns and the whole rock geochemical data available for the same samples. Except for quantifying the mineral weights, the sparse phase search also allows for the localisation of REE phosphate grains and the observation of their association with other minerals using backscatter electron (BSE) imaging. These observations are used to conclude that the REE phosphates were most likely of diagenetic origin, with REEs and phosphate remobilised from primary chemical precipitates. It is demonstrated that automated mineralogical techniques can be used to qualitatively and quantitatively describe the influence of a rockÆs trace mineralogy on its geochemistry.

Secondary steelmaking (or ladle metallurgy) has been developed as a post- steelmaking ladle treatment to produce steel of superior quality. Its rapid growth has resulted from quality improvements, productivity increase, operational flexibility and process route economics. Advances in secondary steelmaking are very impressive during the past decade, and many commercial systems have been developed for performing one or more of the following unit operations: degassing, atmosphere regulation, reheating, refining with synthetic slag, rinsing gas treatment, injection of solid materials and alloying. The metallurgical requirements imposed by the current competitive steel market include more precise analysis tolerances, minimum level of detrimental elements, improved cleanness, demanding service performance and better processability. In most cases, these requirements could only be realized by the application of appropriate secondary refining facilities. Continuing developments in simplicity of design, cost advantage, quick cycle time, improvements in peripheral services such as refractories, instrumentation and in-situ analysis, extensive exploration of new applications, and the use of computer, can be expected. An exciting future is predicted for the widespread adoption of secondary steelmaking to perform most of the major refining functions over a variety of steel quality. It will also become a vital link in the total steelmaking process for production of tonnage steel at the large integrated steelworks and the mini-steelmills.

Both innovation and excellence are desirable attributes of education, as they are also markers in the progression of the human race, but how attainable are they? The interaction of minerals and humanity provides a special insight into the development of both criteria, from the discovery that chert cuts, through the Bronze Age and the first use of metal alloys for implements, to using coal, oil and uranium as sources of fuel. However, there have been many hiccups along the way, where excellence in one respect has meant disaster in another. Examples are in the exploitation of asbestos, and in traditionally poor work practices in mining, both contributing to the widespread public belief that minerals and mining are ecologically undesirable. Yet is this perception based on the unrealistic expectation of innovation and excellence being simultaneous qualities of any given process? Common sense born of experience indicates that the journey from one, to the other, is usually a long and often tedious process, with much trial and error before excellence is attained. In our time, the partnership between academia and industry is the usual pathway to achieve it. Even so, we should take care that innovation does not become overwhelmed by the pursuit of excellence: as history clearly demonstrates, humanity depends upon both.

Flue gases from electrical power station boilers, roasting, metallurgical and chemical plants could be treated by flotation using conventional flotation machines. The flue gases are introduced into the pulp instead of the air. The flotation media is a suspension of Ca(OH)2 or CaCO3 or a solution of NH4OH etc containing Na oleate as collector and frother. The SO2 and dust content of the initial flue gases were experimentally reduced by 100 to 1000 times in one flotation operation. The velocity of the flue gases through flotation machines could reach approximatively 0.4 to 0.5 m/s and more against 1.5 m/s reached in scrubber absorbers used for this purpose, but the quality of purification is expected to be better for flotation, which is essential for the cases of heavy polluted metallurgical and chemical flue gases. For some chemical plants the flue gases flotation media may be different and more suitable as compared to the above mentioned media. The proposed flotation method could be used for separation of dry grinded ores in the form of aerosols, with a realisation of flotation from a closed space (gas bubble in the pulp) onto the interface liquid-air where the particles are attached inside the bubbles.

The ventilation and refrigeration design of underground mines is an important aspect, when new or existing mines are considered and places a great responsibility on engineers tasked to do so. The current trend for both local and international underground mines is to extend their search for valuable ore reserves deeper below surface. In South Africa, the predictions are that about 40 kt of actual gold still lies in situ, ready for extraction. As mines extend their search for minerals of economic value deeper and deeper into the earthÆs crust, ventilation and refrigeration aspects of such mines become more prominent than before. The planning and design of the required ventilation and refrigeration within these mines, over their expected lifetime is important including the practical implications of such designs. Technology changes and improvements need to be incorporated into ventilation and refrigeration designs, where possible and advances in this specialised field explored. This paper explores ventilation and refrigeration design aspects within the underground mine sphere. Aspects such as mining depth, virgin rock temperature (VRT), mining methods, and different cooling applications available including ventilation supply are reviewed in design applications. Heat generally becomes a significant aspect to counter in these mines and they are not always necessarily deep mines.

The EPA National Risk Management Research Laboratory (NRMRL) Mine Waste Technology Program (MWTP) and the EPA Region VIII Superfund office are jointly conducting a field-scale technology demonstration of a two-step in situ treatment of the acidic Anchor Hill Pit lake at the Gilt Edge Mine Superfund site near Deadwood, South Dakota, USA. The project goal is to develop cost and performance data for the in situ treatment for potential application in long-term water treatment/management activities at the Gilt Edge site, and for potential application at other similar sites. Lime neutralisation of the pit using a Neutra-Mill was accomplished in the spring of 2001, with a resultant lime utilisation efficiency of about 71 per cent, and a typical throughput of about 1 tonne per hour using coarse, pebble quicklime and 1.4 tonnes per hour using finer, ground lime. Redox-mediated biotransformation treatment of the pit has been ongoing since May 2001. As of January 2003, denitrification is complete in the near-surface waters and about 90 per cent complete in the deeper waters. Bacterial sulfate reduction is expected to begin in the near future. This paper describes project activities, results, and lessons-learned to-date as well as future monitoring plans.

Narrow vein tabular orebodies are prone to mining induced seismicity. The Tasmania Mine is a complex example of a seismically active tabular orebody, where the contrasting material properties of the host strata and of the orebody itself, serve to exacerbate the seismic response. Analysis of a continuous record of seismicity over a period of seven years has provided significant insight into the fundamental mechanics of the rock mass. Understanding seismicity to permit safe extraction of the orebody has been enhanced by instrumentation of rock mass behaviour in response to mining and mining induced seismicity. It is the purpose of this paper to explore that understanding in respect to the adoption of an alternative down-hole Avoca stoping method for use in particular circumstances.Intensive instrumentation of the Tasmania Mine over a period of four years has provided insight into the behaviour of the rock mass in response to extraction of the narrow vein orebody it encompasses. A range of instruments have been installed in clusters or single installations in order to measure changing stress conditions and the impact of those changes on the rock mass and the reinforcement system.Instruments are often installed in very close proximity to active production stoping. While it has been possible to observe the impact of the mining and mining induced seismicity at very close quarters, instruments installed in these locations are vulnerable to damage and consequently, the level of instrumentation is high. Instruments are continuously logged, typically on a six hourly basis coinciding with the end of regular blasting times. The response of the instrumentation to changed rock mass conditions is considered against the background of development and production blasting and against the seismic record to assess the viability of downhole Avoca stoping.CITATION:Hills, P B and Walton, R J, 2012. At our Monkland Mine at Gympie, we operate a deep, narrow vein gold mine using hand held equipment, rail mounted haulage and narrow shafts. This is in many respects the old-fashioned way and is well suited most of the orebody geometry exposed to-date. We have also commenced some long hole stoping and we use alimaks for some jobs. The heart of our particular mining style is the employment and retention of experienced miners with remuneration based on productivity. We do our planning/monitoring/supervision down to the level of daily individual productivity. In focussing on cycles per se, we have chosen not to talk about drill and blast cycles or cycles for mine development, stope preparation or drawdown and haulage. Instead we have stepped right back from the operation as presently run and have adopted a very broad view of the mining cycle. We will in this presentation intertwine the ebb and flow of, exploration, project sponsorship, development, production and cash returns to owners. The time line considered spans both history and predicted future.

Commencing in 1956, Rio TInto Australian Exploration Pty Limited in association with Electrolytic Zinc Co of Australasia, Limited, has been carrying out a mineral prospecting program in North-West Tasmania over an area of about 4000 square miles.The program has comprised extensive airborne geophysical surveys, detailed geological mapping, ground geophysical and geochemical investigations. Out of the wealth of new data, and the examination of previous records, has emerged a new structural concept of regional ore control and distribution in North-West Tasmania. This roncept stems from the discovery of an ancient 'fossil' rift valley (graben), named the Owen Rift Valley, along which are located the major mines of the area and numerous well-known prospects. The known mines and prospects from north to south include Mt Bischoff (tin); the Pinnacles (zinc, lead, ropper); the Chester (pyrites); Rosebery-Hercules (lead, zinc, ropper, silver, gold); Mt Tyndall (lead, ropper, zinc); Comstock and Tasman (copper, lead, zinc); Mt Lyell (copper, pyrites, gold); Mt Jukes and Mt Darwin (ropper). The identification of the West Coast (Owen Conglomerate) Range as a fossil rift valley is due to Or B Campana, who carried out extensive geological mapping and interpretation work, and who, with S B Dickinson, are the senior authors of this paper.S B Dickinson, who introduced B Campana to the geological problems of West Tasmania, had previously investigated the Mt Lyell and Rosebery mining fIeld, to which reference is made in this work.D King assisted in the regional mapping and in providing numerous data on the mineral distribution of the area.R S Matheson rontributed to the fmdings on ore emplacement and rontrol in the discussions held on this subject. The Goodyear nickel prospect is located 45 km southeast of Kalgoorlie (31.04¦S, 121.80¦E) near the eastern boundary of Hampton Area - East Location 45 (Figure 1). Nickel mineralisation was discovered on the Goodyear prospect in March 1996 when a reverse circulation drillhole (GYC5), initially drilled in December 1995, was deepened to meet a minimum footwall penetration requirement of 20 in that had been set for the drill program. Approximately 3 in of sulphides averaging 4.9 per cent nickel was intersected from 296 metres down-hole, this being within 2 in of the first end-of-hole. Hole GYC5 was part of an eight hole drilling program undertaken by Titan Resources in late-1995. This program was designed to test whether nickel mineralisation in the Dunlop prospect, discovered by the Western Mining Corporation - BHP Camylia Joint Venture immediately east of the East Location 45 boundary, continued across the tenement boundary. The area targeted by the initial drill program had been explored by Western Mining Corporation in the mid-1980s using extensive surface sampling and a drilling program that included 17 RAB and percussion drillholes. None of these holes intersected nickel Mineralisation.\

The paper describes a spectrometric method and apparatus developed for lithology logging in brown coal formations. The nuclear spectromet- ric technique developed is able to delineate coal/sand/clay seams. One requirement was to log inside drilling rods, as well as cased or open holes. The method described is based on combined natural gamma and gamma- gamma techniques using a spectrometric system for signal acquisition and subsequent computer based on-line data analysis and interpretation.

Bauxite from the Weipa and Andoom (North Queensland) deposits was treated to provide a low-iron raw material for high- alumina refractories or aluminium chloride manufacture. The operation involved passing crushed, calcined bauxite continuously through a single laboratory shaft furnace. Consecutive sulfidation and chlorination of the iron minerals within the furnace resulted in a beneficiate containing less than 2% (wt.) Fe203 and by-product ferric chloride con- taining only traces of aluminium.
