An important problem associated with tandem dragline systems is that of matching the productive capability of individual draglines in the combination. In this paper, a dependence mechanism among draglines in a tandem system is described, and possible consequential problems in a poorly-matched system are defined. The rate of linear advance and the cost of stripping are determined as two major indications for an efficient operation. The proposed decision criteria and the underlying mechanism to select a synchronous couple are introduced and used in simulating tandem dragline systems. The developed model is tested on a hypothetical strip mine where pullback stripping is applied with a tandem dragline system.

The principles and utility of in-situ coal gasification are discussed, and a first field test conducted by the Alberta Research Council in 1976 near Forestburg, Alberta, is described. The test was carried out in a 12-ft subbituminous coal seam under 60 feet of cover. Within this seam, a 30 by 60-foot block , containing approximately 650 tons of coal, was delineated by four injection/production holes which were oriented to take advantage of the natural fracture system in the coal. Linkage between holes was established by reverse combustion and gasification was accomplished by injecting air into the ignited coal. No steam was injected but operating pressures were adjusted to utilize formation waters for partial carbon -steam gasification. The coal gasification runs lasted six weeks and gasified an estimated 900 tons of coal ,' during sustained periods of gasification, a fuel gas with heating values of between 110 and 150 Btu/scf was obtained. Plans are now being developed for excavating the test site and inspecting the subsurface cavities created by gasification.

"There is a general consensus that, in order to widen the utilization of Western Canadian coals, a major effort must be devoted to their transportation, utilization of fines, beneficiation and mining techniques. It is postulated that the concept studied extensively over the last four years at Alberta Research Council (ARC), and based on a combination of hydraulic mining, selective agglomeration with bitumen and/ or heavy oil, pipeline transportation and oil recovery from agglomerates, offers a particularly attractive solution to the problems associated with extraction, beneficiation, transportation and utilization of Western bituminous and subbituminous coals. Results of preliminary experimental work on the feasibility of pipeline agglomeration of metallurgical coal and hydraulic transportation of agglomerates are presented and discussed in the context of conventional agglomeration techniques in stirred tanks. IntroductionAlberta is endowed with enormous reserves of low-sulphur coals which could attract considerable attention of potential customers, but the remote location of this province handicaps its competitiveness on the world market. It is known that Alberta's Cretaceous, particularly metallurgical, coals differ significantly from their Carboniferous counterparts; current R&D work on indigenous coals should continue to expand in order to encourage overseas client s to use these coals more extensively.There is a genera l consensus that, in order to widen the utilization of Western coals, a major effort must be devoted to their transportation, utilization of fines, beneficiation and mining techniques."

"Drawing upon the experiences of a gold extraction plant startup in the Southern Pacific, this paper will describe the importance of the commissioning phases to the project outcomes to achieve early target production despite an overall time compression to attain full plant production. Some of the highlights of the paper include: impact of roles played by the Owner’s construction and operations representatives during project commissioning, the formation of a capable and competent “Mod Squad,” availability of trained operating personnel, control over work priorities and the scope of work needed to bring the plant to safe initial operations. The commissioning team comprised subject matter experts skilled in process technology supported by “generalists” thoroughly conversant in overall plant operations. The merits of a structured team approach to brainstorm and resolve commissioning challenges as opposed to direction from individual subject matter experts is discussed. IntroductionStartup or commissioning is a unique period in the life of a project. Each stage of a project-exploration, feasibility, design, construction, commissioning, initial operations and continuing operations-requires special talents, know-how, and practices. Each stage makes particular demands of the people involved. Initial operations are no exception.Having experienced the 1997 startup phases of oxide and sulfide facilities for a gold extraction plant at a remote island in the Southern Pacific, I can attest to the many challenges and rewards. Commissioning for both facilities was extremely successful and brought the entire project on line well ahead of the targeted completion dates. Using this specific project as an example, this paper will highlight some of the key features of project commissioning. In this paper, the term “pre-commissioning” denotes all activities that lead to mechanical completion; “commissioning” occurs when feed is introduced; and “initial operations” are defined as the duration when operations accepts the system/facility and takes over."

"The initial development of the massive potash deposits of the prairie evaporite formation took place over a decade ending in 1970. The potash mining and refining facility near Rocanvi11e, Saskatchewan was the 1ast of ten mines to come into production during that era. This operation, known as Sylvite of Canada Ltd., was designed to produce 1. 2 million short tons per year of KCl product in granular, coarse, standard and special standard grades.In 1977 the parent company, Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting, sold the Sylvite property to the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan. Shortly thereafter PCS slated its new Rocanville Division for a two phase program of expansion. The first phase, completed in the spring of 1979, was relatively small, involving mill debottlenecking and additional equipment in the compaction circuit and the product and ore storage areas. The second phase was a major undertaking which included additional mining equipment and a new 300 STPH milling circuit. This work was completed during the fall of 1981 and has increased the Rocanville Division's nameplate capacity to two million STPY.Thickening equipment operating in the Saskatchewan potash industry is generally situated within the main refinery building or a separate insulated and heated structure due to the harsh winter climate and the need to closely control plant brine temperatures to ensure good flotation circuit performance. Since these thickeners process large volumes of slurries, conventional basin type designs tend to be large, ranging up to 150 feet in diameter or more. As part of the general effort to minimize capital costs, the potash industry has begun investigating the use of alternate high capacity, compact thickener designs. In this regard, PCS Rocanville undertook a program in 1978 to evaluate a Lamella™ Thickener and one other type of 'High Rate' thickener* as alternatives to a conventional design for the phase two expansion project."

Statistical models are fitted to the observed distributions of eighteen characteristics of the population of commercial porphyry deposits of North and South America. The statistical base required for the formulation of the statistical models includes 58 commercial porphyry-copper-molybdenum deposits of the Cordilleran Belt from which geological, geometric and economic data were collected. Predictive and composite models are derived from the statistical study to assist explorat10n. planning, engineering studies and fmanc1al analyses as required for the development of new porphyry deposits in the Cordilleran Belt.

This paper is concerned with an analysis of a number of failures of large-size, hypervelocity light gas gun chambers and barrels. A brief description of the light gas gun principle and of the various types of guns is first given. The failures and the investigations carried out are then described in detail, with the failures divided into two groups. The first group comprises those failures caused by certain conditions to which the guns may be submitted, and includes, for example, severe local heating of the bore surface causing hardening and cracking of the steel. These conditions were accidental and steps were taken to prevent them. The remaining failures were due to faults in the material or in the heat-treatment, manufacturing or assembling procedures. Specific problems, such as hydrogen embrittlement, and the use of high strength gun barrels above their ductile-brittle transition temperature by preheating prior to firing, are briefly considered. Past attempts to establish an integrated steel industry on the West Coast of Canada have been unsuccessful for at least three reasons: (a) insufficient reserves of a suit-able iron ore supply; (b) a relatively small local market for iron and steel; and (c) the non-availability of an economical process to produce primary iron on a small scale. Today, the reserves of economically mineable ore deposits are ample to support a steel production of 100,000 to 200,-000 tons per annum. The local market has increased so as to be able to absorb most of this capacity. With-in the next few years, a small integrated steel plant, including the "H-Iron" direct iron ore reduction process for electric furnace charge stock production, will be able to show a profitable operation. It is the purpose of this paper to point out conditions as they exist in the merchandizing of coal, to compare these conditions with methods in use by competitive producers of coal substitutes, and to present briefly some suggestions which may help the individual operator to market more coal in the immediate future, while we are waiting for the scientist and research worker, who are now busy on coal betterment , to produce in a practical way the results which they now write about in such glowing terms. While it may be unnecessary to call the attention of coal operators to the present deplorable condition of the industry, it might be well to impress upon our members in other branches of mining, as well as upon the public at large, the seriousness of the situation. Emerging from the war and the period of reconstruction that followed, the coal industry found itself with too many mines and too many men for normal conditions. To make matters worse, the interruptions in deliveries caused by strikes, the unfavourable publicity caused by socialistic propaganda, and the repeated governmental investigations, made the market a fertile field for coal substitutes which were not so handicapped. These substitutes were well advertised, and were marketed in an up-to-date manner, furnishing an example from which the coal operator could well profit. Now, whether or not there is agreement as to the cause or causes of this condition, there can be no doubt that we are today face to face with the fact that the sale of coal has not kept pace with the sale and use of other commodities. Had it done so, we would ere this have been able to take care of the surplus labour and work our mines at least approximately full time.

"Concentration of dense mineral phases (s.g. greater than 7) for characterisation of individual particles and mineral grains by electron microscopy is a well established technique for the detection and characterisation of valuable mineral phases. This presentation describes the type of data that can be generated when both the concentration and characterisation steps are carried to higher levels than typical. The concentration step is the gravity recoverable gold (GRG) protocol that has been used for over 100 ore samples. This protocol yields three concentrates that represent three progressive degrees of grinding and liberation. Three ore samples were subjected to the GRG protocol and three size classes of each concentrate were characterised using the mineral liberation analyser (MLA), an automated, EDX-based tool. This presentation briefly presents GRG and MLA technology, and then focuses on the results obtained: photos, images and databank, the latter used to evaluate the extent of particle liberation and particle shape.INTRODUCTIONThe practice of gravity concentration prior to characterization of mineral samples using electron beam microscopy is solidly established. Typically, a dense liquid such as tetrabromoethane (density: 2.97 g/cm3) is used to reject the light phase, typically carbonates and silicates. The heavy phase, mostly sulphides, oxides and precious metals, is then mounted in a polymer matrix and examined using beam microscopy.Both the pre-concentration and the sample preparation/examination steps have seen significant advances over the past ten years, but are not without problems. A major issue of preconcentration is that most dense liquids used are toxic, tetrabromoethane being a prime example. More recently, a dense liquid with little or no toxicity (sodium polytungstate, distributed by Sometu Inc.) has become commercially available, but its use is limited to relatively low s.g. splits around 3 g/cm3. Dense liquids are viscous, and their use is limited to particles coarser than 37 µm, although centrifuge separation can probably lower this limit to around 10 µm. Magnetogravimetric separators can achieve much higher specific density cuts, but upgrading below 100 µm or in the presence of magnetic minerals remains a problem. The use of centrifuge separators such as the 3-in Knelson Concentrator (KC MD3) or the Falcon 4-in SB (SB4) is particularly attractive since these units can easily process large masses (by laboratory standards) and achieve a cut density well above those of dense liquids."

This paper gives an overview of the various strands of postgraduate and undergraduate training offered in the Department of Chemical Engineering at UCT. Since 2003 the Department is offering a formal postgraduate MSc programme in hydrometallurgical engineering aimed especially at graduate work-based engineers, with 5 weeks of intensive course work plus a research dissertation on a work-related project. This programme has now run 5 times over the years and produced some 20 degrees. The paper reflects on the experiences with running the course, especially the difficulties experienced with supervising industry-based external students. Furthermore, through the Department a graduate training program is offered for all junior metallurgists at a major South African minerals company. This 2-year program, which is currently on its 12th cohort, offers 1 or 2 week intensive blocks of course work alternating with longer stints where the candidates are based at various operations. Although primarily focussed on minerals processing, it has a significant element of hydrometallurgy in it and in recent years an advanced hydrometallurgy stream has been introduced. The paper reflects on the development of the program over the years, the benefits it has provided to the company as well as some of the challenges that remain. Finally the paper gives an overview of hydrometallurgy related undergraduate and research-only postgraduate MSc and PhD projects at the university. Some emphasis is placed on the recently launched South African Minerals and Metals Research Initiative (SAMMRI), a joint government-industry programme to support university-based research in the area of applied metallurgy.

"This paper presents key outcomes of a major Asia-Pacific Partnership project between the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation and Huainan Mining Industry Group Co. Ltd. to develop and demonstrate advanced technologies at Pansan mine, Huainan, China. A comprehensive approach assessed fundamental strata and coal seam methane conditions during mining and optimized mining sequences and coal mine methane capture systems. The project demonstrated a practical approach and procedures for advanced coal and methane co-extraction systems, improved mining safety and efficiency, increased methane capture and use, and reduced fugitive methane emissions.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article donne les principaux résultats d’un grand projet de partenariat Asie- Pacifique entre le CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) [Organisation de recherche scientifique et industrielle du Commonwealth australien] et le Huainan Mining Industry Group Co. Ltd.; ce projet cherche à développer et à démontrer des technologies avancées à la mine Pansan, à Huainan, en Chine. "This paper investigates the froth function in flotation and the associated upgrading process. Flotation literature has revealed that one of the main functions of the froth phase is the cleaning of bubble-particle aggregates by rejection of entrained material. The cleaning and transport processes across the froth phase exert straining forces on these aggregates on their way up to the froth surface. These forces will impact on the recovery of bubble-particle aggregates.The grade at the top of the froth (TOF) is a parameter related to the quality of particles collected by bubbles in the pulp zone (true flotation). It has recently been demonstrated that TOF corresponds to the maximum practically attainable grade described by the recovery-grade (or enrichment ratio) curve. TOF lumps all the processes experienced by the bubble-particle aggregates before reaching the launder concentrate. This paper describes a methodology for quantifying flotation performance by means of the top of the froth sample - a touch of froth.INTRODUCTIONFroth flotation may be the most important mineral processing technique, but its theory is complex and is not completely understood even though many aspects have been studied and reviewed (Teague, 1998; Wills, 1992).Two distinct particulate systems prevail in the flotation process: a pulp phase and a froth phase (Figure 1). The pulp zone had been studied extensively; however, it is only recently that techniques to measure the froth zone performance have been developed (Contini et al., 1988; Falutsu and Dobby, 1992; Feteris et al., 1987; Seaman, 2002; Vera et al., 1999b).Flotation involves a number of mass transfer processes, occurring in the pulp phase and the froth phase. The formation of the froth and its subsequent removal are considered to be two important steps of the process. Phenomena that occur in the froth phase are known to affect flotation performance significantly (Cutting et al., 1981).Because the froth has a high free surface energy (as a result of the extensive interfacial surface between liquid and air), it appears thermodynamically unstable. The foaming is a dynamic balance, as new bubbles are added continuously from the pulp, while others disappear from the top. Under steady-state conditions, the volumes of added and subtracted air are equal (Booth, 1953)."

"The objective of this study was to demonstrate the application of Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) to the continuous analysis of online monitoring of Al, Mg, Ni, Mn, Si and Fe in nickel ore limonite and saprolite slurry samples. Analysis was performed on slurry samples in air at atmospheric pressure. Two pure samples of limonite and saprolite were used. Mixtures of the two samples in varying proportions were used to build calibration curves, study the influence of solid/liquid ratio, and evaluate short and long term reproducibility. The LIBS measurement of these elements is independent of the water content (from 70-85%, the range allowed by our setup). Repeatability of the measurement and long term reproducibility (from day-to-day) were below 1.2 % and 2% respectively for all the elements studied in our conditions. The results obtained showed that an industrial LIBS analyzer could provide the chemical composition of the six elements Al, Mg, Ni, Mn, Si and Fe within 1-2 minutes.IntroductionThe metal-producing industry faces the major challenge of increasing productivity, reducing costs, and maximizing benefits from existing equipment. By pyrometallurgy, metal making involves the basic steps of charging the furnace, melting the charge and refining. By hydrometallurgy, the metal refining is carried out through the dissolution of the metal by chemical reaction and electrolysis. During refining either by pyrometallurgy or hydrometallurgy, it is critical that operating parameters be adjusted and controlled so that the chemistry of the melt or the solution is within predetermined limits. Presently, the complete turnaround time for sampling, sample transfer, analysis and communication of the results to the operators is often 30 minutes or more."

THE Box mine, situated in Saskatchewan on the north shore of lake Athabasca, is unique in two respects. It is the first and, so far, the only gold mine in Saskatchewan, and it is the only gold mine in Canada to employ a large-scale forced caving system as the main mining method. Discovered in 1934 by Tom Box, an Edmonton prospector, its subsequent history, while breaking no records for speed, has been one of steady and more or less normal development. Camp and plant are situated close to the shore of Beaverlodge bay, sorne 50 miles east of the Saskatchewan-Alberta boundary and 35 miles south of the north boundary of the Province. The railhead at Waterways, Alberta, is about 220 miles to the southwest. Prince Albert lies some 450 miles to the south. The surrounding country presents a rather rugged variation of the usual Precambrian topography, with hills rising five to six hundred feet above lake Athabasca. The numerous lakes and islands, together with the wide expanse of lake Athabasca, compose an attractive scene, at least in the not over-long 'open water' season. The winters are long but not extremely cold, judged by prairie standards. The small lakes break-up around May 20th and the 'freeze-up' stops navigation early in October. Though apparently remote, the Box mine is fortunate in having reason-ably cheap transportation from Edmonton. The 300-mile railway from Edmonton to Waterways is the most expensive section, the rate for 1st class freight being $1.70 per hundred pounds and for 5th class freight $0.77 per hundred. Freight from Waterways to the mine, approximately 140 miles down the Athabasca river and 90 miles along lake Athabasca, is delivered by barges and tugs for 50 cents per hundred pounds. All freight is delivered during the 'open water' shipping season, which lasts from about .Tune 7th to October 7th. In normal years, barges are loaded to 3 to 3 1/2feet draught up to September 1st. After that date, and earlier in dry years, shallow water at Waterways reduces the barge loads. Barges of 100 to 200 tons capacity handle all mining freight, including pieces up to 15 tons in weight, without undue difficulty.

THIS paper is a description of the milling practice and metallurgy at the Moneta Porcupine mine, Timmins, Ontario. The results obtained with an all-cyanide circuit and later with flotation followed by cyanidation are described. The ?investigation which prompted the various changes in milling practice have also been dealt with. Moneta ore is possibly the most refractory now being milled in the Porcupine district. This is due to the ultra fine state in which the gold occurs and to its intimate association with pyrite. No doubt there is ore of similar characteristics on the neighbouring properties but it probably forms only a small portion of the tonnage being mined, whereas at Moneta the bulk of the ore requires an extremely fine grind to liberate the gold. The fineness to which an ore can be ground economically has gone far beyond what was thought to be the limit only a few years ago. Formerly, a set of standard screens was all that was required to measure the fineness to which an ore was ground. At present, the Haultain infrasizer is practically indispensable, and the nominal micron has become a familiar unit of measurement to all those dealing with the problems of fine grinding.

Industrial minerals are generally considered to include non-metallic minerals, mineral products, or materials that provide raw material inputs for the construction, chemical, and manufacturing industries. They are often relatively low-value and bulky materials that are generally used close to where they are produced; however, some raw materials may be transported hundreds of kilometres to manufacturers and customers (ENDM, 2021). They do not include the metallic minerals, mineral fuels, or gemstones, and are used in industries based on their physical and/or chemical properties (Wikipedia, 2021). In contrast to most metallic minerals, a general distinguishing characteristic of the industrial minerals sector is their general low degree of market elasticity in relation to the market prices and product specifications. The estimation of either a Mineral Resource or a Mineral Reserve (MRMR) for an industrial minerals deposit can be affected to a significant degree by a number of factors that are not typically applicable to metallic mineral deposits. These factors can include such considerations as the particular physical and chemical characteristics of the final product, product quality issues, market size and market access. In some cases, such information may be confidential and proprietary. One of the key challenges of the industrial minerals sector is to define a commonly accepted listing of which types of minerals, materials, or mineral deposits can be considered as industrial minerals (Mining Standards Task Force, 1999). Although definitions for what constitutes an industrial mineral can vary in detail, general descriptions can be found in American Geosciences Institute (2021), Fastmarkets IM (2021), Snowden (2019), SME (2021) and Wikipedia (2021). A brief listing of some of the materials and minerals that are generally considered to be industrial minerals is provided in Table 1. For the purposes of this document, all references to industrial minerals include not only the minerals, materials, and mineral deposits themselves, but also the various commercial products that are derived from these sources.

The Corefco ammonia leach nickel refinery treats Ni-Co mixed sulphides from the high-pressure acid leaching of Moa Bay nickel laterite. Due to the low iron content of the feed, the ammonia leach process generates a leach residue with ~10% Ni+Co. Since commissioning a leach residue pressure filtration circuit in 2002, this residue has been stockpiled, dried, and sold commercially. For several years, the residue was sold to nickel smelters overseas. In 2014, re-processing of the residue in the high-pressure acid leach was tested. Lab test work was completed showing excellent extraction of the contained nickel and cobalt, and additional beneficial effects in the high-pressure acid leach circuit. A plant test in Moa confirmed the results, and preparation for shipment of the valuable leach residue for re-processing has begun. This paper outlines the test work and results, and some commercial considerations.

"I AM CONSCIOUS of the honour you pay me by having invited me to address you on the subject of the Rehabilitation of the Sydney Steel Corporation. The true architect of the revival and rehabilitation is Robert Burns Cameron. Because of the numerous myths which have grown up around what seems to be the miracle of the revival of the Sydney Steelworks, I propose to go back to the time when they came under the full control of the Province, on the 1st of January, 1968. Late in 1967, the decision was taken by Premier G. I. Smith to keep the Steel Plant running for at least another year, in an endeavour to see whether the enormous losses being sustained by Dosco could be reduced to a level which would permit their continuing operation. When that decision was taken, Dosco was to continue management until the 30th of April, 1968, and in the intervening period, the Provincial Government would seek management of the right calibre to ensure that an objective view of the Steelworks operations could be secured. By a combination of circumstances which can only be described as most felicitous, the man selected for the task was R. B. Cameron. He very quickly determined that to permit Dosco to continue management of the Steelworks until April 30 could only result in heavy losses to the Province and a consequent deterioration in the already critical financial position and a declining morale of the worke"

RESEARCH has been defined as the link between the present and the future. Science, wonderful though its achievements may be, has but scratched the surface of the unknown. Research is directing its attention to winning new facts in order that their application to the processes of today may open up new sources of wealth for the common benefit. Two classes of research investigations are often recognized-fundamental and applied, but these classes merge into each other and it is often hard to distinguish one from the other. Fundamental research is carried out primarily to develop basic facts, but frequently these are found to have immediate economic value, while applied research, specifically aimed at economic values, often necessitates a preliminary fundamental investigation. Both are essential and both should proceed by scientific method. It is obvious in fuel technology that a knowledge of the physical and chemical constitution of the various coals is fundamental to their industrial utilization, and further, a knowledge of the way these coals react under different conditions of temperature, atmosphere, etc., is necessary in solving such problems as storage, combustion, carbonization, gasification, or con-version to liquid fuels. The wide range of coals, the complexity, of their constitution, and the many uses for coal, makes fuel research no simple subject but one with unending possibilities. The Research Council of Alberta, formerly known as the Scientific and Industrial Research Council of Alberta, was established in 1919, to promote the development and conservation of the natural resources of the Province. The work of the Council was arranged in six major divisions: Fuels; Geology; Road Materials; Soils; Natural Gas; and Forest Products. The office and laboratories are located in the University of Alberta. The Council was financed until the depression of 1933 by a separate vote of the Legislature, but since then has been continued, though on a much smaller scale, as one of the activities of the University. It might, however, be noted that although the Council is now in abeyance, a skeleton organization has been maintained so that it can be brought back to active service as soon as conditions warrant. Annual reports are still submitted to the Legislature. Funds have not been made available, however, for the publication of the last five reports.
