"This paper outlines some of the factors that affect the airflow required for the ventilation of modern diesel-powered equipment and of electric equipment and examines how they can be applied in determining reasonable ventilation rates for Tier IV compliant diesel equipment and for electric equipment operating in mining environments. Airflow calculations for modern diesel-powered equipment and for electric equipment are more complex and must be based on a combination of factors that are unique to each mine. Methodologies for ventilation rate determinations for each case are proposed in this paper.INTRODUCTIONTraditionally, airflow requirements for production and support equipment operating in underground mines have been determined by multiplying the vehicle power by a ventilation rate that was either mandated by regulations or determined empirically from known quantities. However, in light of the drastic reductions to diesel equipment emissions mandated by the US EPA Tier IV and EURO Stage 4 regulations, there is still a great deal of uncertainty in the underground mining industry among those responsible for the ventilation of planned new mines or the expansion of current mines. The question remains, what ventilation rates should the ventilation system designer apply for modern diesel equipment?Also, given the ongoing development of grid/battery-electric equipment and active construction of fully electric mines, it has become critical to determine adequate airflow rates per brake kilowatt of electric engine power. One of the most important criteria for determining ventilation rates for electric equipment is the amount of heat they generate, as this is the most significant emission produced by electric equipment (which do not produce exhaust gases or particulates). Therefore, ventilation rates required to dissipate heat from electric equipment must be suitably determined for all electric vehicle fleets operating in underground mines."

Manipulation of pouring temperature is an efficient way to produce different microstructural features. In order to characterize the microstructure of rheocast billets due to different superheats of 615-695 °C, the parallel plate compression method was employed. Foundry 356 Al-Si alloy with different morphologies of primary a-Al particles were tested at different initial pressures of 4,8, 11,2 KPa, The resulted strain-time graphs were further treated mathematically to calculate viscosity of SSM billets. The interrelationships of viscosity, the microstructure and primary phase flow during compression are discussed, It is shown that the dendritic primary a-Al structure has the highest viscosity number which is almost three orders of magnitude greater than those for globular morphology, The current research have, for the first time, shown the validity and reliability of "parallel plate compression viscometry" method in characterizing microstructural evolution of Rheocast SSM billets.

"Abstract -The Asturian fluorspar district consists of vein and stratiform deposits where mineralization is controlled by a combination of lithological and tectonic factors.It is postulated that these fluorspar deposits have been formed under disequilibrium conditions created during circulation of ascending hydrothermal solutions along faults and other high permeability conduits. Mixing of solutions is inferred from fluid inclusion studies. Cavity filling and replacement processes are very important in localizing the ore deposits and in determining their morphology.Permian volcanic rocks in the area yield a regional positive geochemical anomaly in fluorine implying that Permian vulcanism may be a possible primary source of fluorine.On a regional scale a relationship can be established between some of the ore deposits and important tectonic lineaments. The stratiform deposits preferentially occur within a calcareous-detrital facies located at the margins of basins. These basin margins are related to important synsedimentary faults.Fluorite is the only economic mineral in these deposits. Quartz, carbonates, barite and pyrite are common minerals accompanying fluorite. Other minerals that may occasionally be present as minor components are: marcasite, chalcopyrite, fahlore, sphalerite, galena and related supergene minerals."

The Red Lake greenstone belt is an irregular mass of lavas sedimentary rocks and intrusives which is approxiately 35 miles long 18 miles wide and 7 miles deep. Basaltic volcamcs are the oldest rocks w1thm the belt. They are believed to have been laid down on an ancient crust which is at least 3 billion (3 x 109) years old and was composed partly of sediments. The basaltic rocks are overlain by acid volcanics and sedimentary rocks which have been complexly folded and are preserved as a down-folded remnant of younger rocks within the older crust. The volcanics and sedimentary rocks of the greenstone belt have been cut by intrusives with a wide range of composition. The emplacement of the intrusives and the accompanying regional metamorph-ism which terminated the orogenic activity in this area are believed to have occurred approximately 2.4 billion years ago. The basalts and many of the basic and ultrabasic intrusives undoubtedly had their source in the sub-crust or mantle. At least some of the granitic intrusives are believed to have had

A general outline is given for the determination of copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc, lead, cadmium, bismuth, manganese, uranium, molybdenum, vanadium, sulphate and fluoride by polarographic or amperometric methods in a variety of ores or metallurgical products. The detection of oxygen in gas mixtures by an amperometric method used as a safety device is also discussed. Introduction I N this paper, a general outline will be given of the polarographic and amperometric methods used for the chemical analysis of various ores and metallurgical products in the Chemical Analysis Section of the Extraction Metallurgy Division of the Mines Branch. The methods to be discussed will be confined to those based on the use of normal D.C. polarography and will not include those methods which utilize a cathode-ray, square wave, pulse or A.C. type of polarograph. For the sake of convenience, ? the polarographic methods will be discussed according to the type of supporting electrolyte employed, as the same electrolyte may serve to determine more than one element in more than one type of ore. "It is advantageous to process low grade ores with large scale flotation cells. Large-scale flotation cells have been enhanced with effective volume scale-up. In this paper, the latest and largest flotation cell with effective volume of 680 m3 in China is investigated. The hydrodynamics and flotation kinetics characteristics are conducted using CFD simulation. The similar circulating flow is formed compared to the previous BGRIMM (Beijing General Research Institute of Mining and Metallurgy) flotation cell and it is a suitable fluid dynamics environment. It is demonstrated that the flotation cell produces good gas dispersion and solid suspension. It is indicated that kinetic eddy dissipation plays a key role on collision kernel and collision probability profile. The higher collision probability profile appears at the impeller and stator regions aiding good metallurgical performances. The properties of the large-scale flotation cell are assessed using hydrodynamic numbers. The variation of hydrodynamic numbers such as the power number Np, the Froude number Fr, the air flow number Na, etc with flotation cell volumes show similar properties to previous flotation cells proven to be good in engineering applications. This research would aid structure optimization of the 680 m3 flotation cell.INTRODUCTIONFroth flotation is one of the mains method used in the mineral industry, which is used to process the most of metallic minerals. The proportion of low grade ores has increased with the minerals exploited around world. The increased capacity of concentrators demands large-scale flotation cells. Therefore, flotation equipment has seen a significant increase in size, for which large-scale flotation cells have prominent advantages in improving metallurgical performances, reducing area of plant blueprint printer, lowering the power consumption of the unit ore, decreasing labor cost and overall capital cost. Since the end of 1940’s, flotation cell sizes have continuously increased. To the end of 1990’s, flotation cells with the effective volume of 200 m3 were developed. In the last two decades, flotation cells have achieved a dramatic increase in size. In 2003, an industrial experiment on 257 m3 Smart Cell flotation cells was carried out in Minera Los-Pelambres, Chile. In 2007, the first 300 m3 Tank Cell flotation cell was designed and obtained industrial application in Macraes gold ore, New Zealand. And 320 m3 BGRIMM flotation cells are also in good operation in Toromocho Copper Mine, Peru and Wunugetushan Copper Mine, China. However, flotation cells are conventionally designed using empirically derived relations and geometric similarity. The continual scale-up of flotation cells is still a significant developing process. A 500 m3 Tank Cell was designed for the industrial experiment in Finland and a 620 m3 Tank Cell have also been completed the design. A 660 m3 Super Cell also was manufactured for the industrial experiment released in IMPC 2014. So, the flotation cells with volume exceeding 600 m3 become a pioneering research field for researchers worldwide."

Cadmium and other 'minor' metals in Canada tend to remain inconspicuous given the prominence of the country's massive production of other minerals. This same reality is reflected in the accuracy and deficiency of quantitative data concerning the sources of supply and demand for these metals. It is the intent of this paper to identify the nature of some of these difficulties and to reconstruct a more accurate description of Canada's production and consumption of cadmium, based on the results of recent surveys undertaken by the Mineral Policy Sector of Energy, Mines and Resources Canada and Noranda Sales Corporation Ltd.

The choice of fan type (axial flow, centrifugal or mixed flow) most suited for a mine ventilation application depends on a number of technical and economic factors. For each project, the relative importance of these factors will vary. It is worthwhile to carry out an assessment on a case by case basis. The paper, by discussing a number of technical and economic factors and their interactions, will provide the ventilation official a methodology to easily and methodically undertake such an assessment.

"Abstract -Biotite from aplite that appears to have crystallized simultaneously with disseminated Cu-Mo mineralization at MacLeod Lake in northern Quebec yields K-Ar dates in the range 2032 ± 44 Ma to '2f1:)1 ± 47 Ma. The mean value, 2065 Ma, is some 400 Ma younger than the 2485 ± 64 Ma date obtained from a hornblende concentrate separated from a granodiorite sill that is spatially, but apparently not genetically, associated with the disseminated Cu-Mo deposit. The mean biotite date of 2065 Ma at MacLeod Lake, a K-Ar date of 2055 Ma reported from an area 50 km east of MacLeod Lake and published dates of about 2000 Ma for galenas from the Chibougamau Cu-Au ores, suggest a widespread thermal and mineralization event, in that part of the Superior Province east of James Bay, that differs from the common late Archean mineralization that is related to volcanism and metamorphic-intrusive activity.Sommaire - Les datations au K-Ar sur des biotites qui auraient cristallisé en même temps que la minéralisation disséminée en Cu et Mo dans une aplite mise en place au Lac MacLeod, au nord du Québec, s'échalonnent entre 2032 ± 44 Ma et '2f1:)1 ± 47 Ma. "Potentially economic deposits of rare earth elements (REE) often contain elevated levels of naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM), primarily thorium and uranium and their associated radioactive decay products. The concentrations of NORM usually exceed typical background levels of natural radioactivity, sometimes by factors of ten or more, and can be of concern relative to occupational radiation protection and the management and disposal of REE mineral processing and metallurgical wastes. This paper provides a summary of the radiological issues normally encountered in the REE concentrate production industry. In addition to an introduction to background radiation and radioactivity, including the thorium and uranium radioactive decay series, radiation levels expected to be encountered in REE concentrate production are outlined. The occupational, environmental and regulatory aspects of REE production related to NORM, including radiation dose limits, radioactive waste disposal guidelines, and threshold VALUES (for the application of transport regulations, are presented.INTRODUCTIONConcurrent with the increasing demand for new sources of rare earth elements (REE) to meet modern industrial needs, there is also an increasing awareness of the radioactivity associated with the REE ores and resources. This is an especially important consideration in addressing questions from the public and local communities who are often concerned about “radiation” and “radioactivity”. Public concern is heightened by reference to legacy issues that arose during times of less regulatory oversight; as well, the benefits of modern technologies, practices and regulation are overlooked. Such concerns are also often inflamed by unfounded claims by non-governmental organizations (NGO’s). Thus, it is important that all concerned have a full understanding of just what the potential risks from radiation associated with REE are, or are not. This paper provides an overview of the sources of radioactivity, the potential implications of radiation and radioactivity in the REE industry, and a brief discussion of established and reliable methods of managing exposure to radiation and radioactivity."

The commercially successful electrowinning and refining of metals typically requires the optimization of the electrolyte composition and operating parameters to produce high quality compact electroplated metal. The prediction of the effect of the electrolyte composition on the structure and morphology of the plated metal remains a challenge. Initial work on the use of polarization measurements to predict and control plating behaviour in electrowinning plants involved potentiodynamic polarization but proved unsatisfactory as accurate and repeatable predictions could not be achieved. The aim of the present work was to develop a reliable galvanodynamic technique specifically applicable to the plating of zinc from sulfate electrolytes with which plant operation may be controlled and optimized. Initial results indicated that plating and nucleation potentials could be measured accurately and repeatably and that the relationship between the two could be used as a predictive tool for the effect of electrolyte composition on the quality of zinc electrodeposits.

"A major program of pillar recovery at the Sullivan mine has been assisted for the past several years by a concerted series of rock mechanics investigations. The object of these investigations is to measure the parameters of rock behaviour which influence pillar mining. This quantitative information is then used in the design of mining methods appropriate for various conditions.Instrumentation to measure absolute rock stress, changes in rock stress and the gross deformation of rock masses has been developed. Various instruments are described, as are instrument evaluation procedures and typical test results. The data from underground measurement projects have been used to modify pillar extraction sequences along re-treat fronts. Rock mechanics information from individual pillars has been incorporated into the design of mining methods to suit particular circumstances."

This study investigated bio-liquefaction of lignite and its model compounds of thymol, bezioc acid and quinoline by a fungus, Hypocrea lixii AH. It analyzed, during bio-liquefaction, enzyme activity of oxidase, LiP, Lac, MnP and polyphenol oxidase, and degradation products by UV-Vis, FTIR, 13C NMR and GC-MS. The results showed that the bio-liquefaction percentage (by mass) of lignite was up to 44.86 %. The bio-liquefaction products of lignite were mainly aniline, amide, ether, carboxylic acid ketone and ester. The aromatic ring number was 1-3 with an aromatic carbon ratio of 0.328, which indicated rings opening, bonds breaking and oxidation reaction. By considering with the enzyme activity analysis results, it showed that LiP and Lac catalyzed reactions to open aromatic cycles and to break bonds; esterase to break ester bond; and peroxidase in oxidation reaction.

A lined rock cavern (LRC) is an alternative container for compressed air energy storage (CAES) to store high-pressure air that is later used to produce electricity. A critical requirement of CAES in LRCs is that the inner seal should provide adequate sealing capacity to prevent air leakage from LRCs. In many studies, rubber sheets are applied to build the inner seal. However, air leakage through rubber seals has not been given much attention and rubber seals are usually assumed to be absolutely airtight. Given that rubber is permeable especially under high air pressure, such as in CAES, air therefore leaks through rubber seals during CAES operations. In this study, a numerical analysis was conducted based on the permeation equation of polymers and the governing equations of thermodynamics of CAES caverns to analyze the characteristics of air leakage from CAES caverns through rubber seals. A planned CAES plant in China was considered as a case study. Results show that air leakage rate increases with increasing cavern temperature and pressure during air injection and decreases as cavern temperature and pressure decline during air withdrawal. However, in total, the daily air leakage percentage is in the order of magnitude of 10-3% in a typical operation cycle, which is much smaller than the critical value of 1%. Under a common range of realistic operations conditions, the daily air leakage percentage is still of the order of 10-3%. Therefore, rubber seals can be used to prevent air leakage in LRCs for CAES. However, the experience of Japanese pilot cavern indicates that the specifications for the on-site vulcanization jointing and installation methods of rubber seals still need improvement.

"The Soviet Union has enormous reserves of iron ore in many different kinds of deposits that are widely distributed in this vast land area. The present iron ore industry is based mainly on deposits in Precambrian cherty iron-formation at Krivoy Rog, Kursk and Murmansk. Extensive reserves of both naturally enriched hematite ore and magnetite iron-formation in these areas alone could sup-ply all the domestic ore required for several hundred years.Many contact metasomatic magnetite deposits discovery in recent years in the eastern Ural Mountain belt and east of the Kusnetsov basin in Siberia are being developed, with ore reserves measured in billions of tons. Oolitic limonite-chamosite-siderite ores of Cretaceous and younger age at Kerch on the Black Sea and around the east and southern perimeter of the West Siberian basin constitute some of the largest concentrations of iron in the world. These sedimentary ores are low grade, of poor quality and difficult to beneficiate. Banded jasper magnetite and hematite iron-formation in volcanic rocks of Devonian age in Kazakhstan and along the Mongolian border are of special geoloica1 significance.Iron deposits in the Krivoy Rog and Kursk areas were examined and a large number of geologists discussed their work on deposits in many other parts of the Soviet Union during the writer's seven-week study tour of mines and research institutes in Moscow, Leningrad, Novosibirsk in Siberia and Kiev in the Ukraine. The descriptive geology of iron deposits of useable ore and of marginal material has been well documented in the course of systematic work and a large number of scientists are studying fundamental problems on the origin and treatment of iron ore."

"For the Kazchrome DC Ferrochrome plant, SMS-group specifically designed an electrode column that would minimize downtime. Special features include the possibility for on load electrode jointing, on load slipping, and back-slipping. Electrode consumption is strongly related to furnace load and impedance, and is very low at high loads, which makes the graphite electrode an alternative to consider even in AC applications. The electrode could also be applied in other DC applications, as for example TiO2 slag, the novel Conroast process, or (twin) DC FeNi furnaces, and could possibly be installed during bigger shut downs. This paper will describe some of the design considerations and operational performance data on this novel column in the FeCr industry that could also be of interest for the FeNi or PGM industry if these would continue to develop towards DC technology.INTRODUCTION Every DC furnace has a cathode and an anode. The anode applied is commonly known as the Concast design, though the original design was by ABB who handed it over to Concast, subsidiary of the SMS-group. Some well-known DC furnaces outside the steel industry where the Concast bottom has been installed are listed in Table 1 as well as a few other key design features.Sidewall cooling and some other data have been left out for reasons of space, and being a lesser relevant design feature to this paper. HES stands for Hollow Electrode System, in which feed is charged through an electrode. Table 1 is built up chronologically according to first start-up date. Below comments are given to briefly explain some of the columns in Table 1: •,“Arm” in the “Cathode” column means that the design of the cathode holding and regulating mechanism consists of an electrode arm as depicted in Figure 1. •,Charging is relevant as some operations started with HES charging, whereas recently most new operations have started without HES but only charging chutes, of which at least some are close to the electrode and possibly others installed closer to the sidewall. •,“Dome” in the “Roof” column means that the design of the roof involves a center piece that can be exchanged if worn. •,The optimal roof design still seems to be a topic of debate, where no design is without problems."

"The future of the uranium industry in Canada during the next twenty years will be very dependent on political and social issues on a world scale. Technology, as such, will tend to be of lesser importance. Nonetheless, some technical changes can be anticipated.This paper deals with milling of uranium ore, leaving further processing and nuclear power production to specialists in these fields. An attempt has been made to look at uranium production technology in Canada in relation to that in other countries, and to draw interference regarding future changes that seem probable in the Canadian context. In particular, recent advances in mill equipment are considered.The chemistry of uranium and its relatively low concentration in most ores has been responsible for a completely hydrometallurgical approach to mill processing, and this should continue. In spite of little commercial success to date, pre-concentration of lower grade ores will be researched further in order that these ores can compete with higher grade deposits in Canada.The discovery of the relatively high-grade ores of the Athabasksa region will undoubtedly influence choice of mill processes and equipment. The potential effect on innovations is discussed"

The SMCO copper plant is located in DR Congo, and was designed by China NERIN Engineering Co., Ltd. The process is a typical hydrometallurgical plant with Leach-SX-EW, with the project treating the oxide minerals with agitation leaching, followed with three stage of solvent extraction and two stages of stripping, and using permanent SS cathodes to produce LME grade copper. Because of the special characteristic of the ore, what contains 2 different type of oxides (one high carbonate oxide and the other low carbonate), there are several new technical measures that have been developed and adopted for the plant. For example, different grinding, leaching, and filtering are used to treat different oxides. This paper, presents the project process, engineering design, construction and commissioning. The paper also describes some of the problems encountered during plant commissioning, such as the agitation leaching tank issues, and corrosion in the settler-mixer. This paper discusses some NERIN solutions to these problems, and explains the use of the CN filter, which is used to filter PLS to treat high level suspend solids, instead of the traditional sand filter. Finally, this paper also proposes steps / measures for further improvement for future plant operation.

Cable bolt supports are being recognized as an effective ground control system in under-ground coal mines in North America, and their use has increased considerably during the past few years. The U.S. Bureau of Mines personnel are conducting both laboratory and field tests to evaluate the performance of these supports under a variety of conditions and to establish realistic design guidelines. This paper describes efforts to evaluate the capability of cable bolts to resist the high shear forces often present in longwall operations. Shear tests were conducted on pairs of 0.025 m3 (0.88 cu. ft) concrete blocks having joint surfaces ranging from rough to smooth. Tests were conducted on blocks both with and without reinforcement with 15.2 mm (0.6 in.) diameter steel cables. During each shear test, the loads and displacements along the normal and shear axes, as well as loads on the cable, were monitored. Cableloads were determined using strain gauges attached to the outside surfaces of the barrel-and-wedge anchors used for pretensioning the cables. Test results show that a cable bolt placed across a joint more than doubled shear resistance of shear blocks having both smooth and rough joints.

"The Waite-Amulet, an important copper-zinc mine, lies astride the Duprat-Dufresnoy township boundary about 8 miles northwest of Noranda, Quebec. It is an amalgamation of two properties, that of the former WaiteAckerman- Montgomery Mines to the north and that of Amulet Mines, Limited, to the south. This amalgamation took place in 1933. The description that follows is confined to the Amulet section.Ore was first discovered on the Amulet property in the autumn of 1924. The C Shaft and Upper A orebodies were found in 1925 and the F orebody in 1929, the latter by diamond drilling under a swamp. Under the present management, Lower A ore body was discovered by diamond drilling at a depth of 700 to 1,200 feet in 1938, and new ore was found from the old C Shaft workings between 1943 and 1945.From April 15th to October 20th, 1930, 60,291 tons of ore was produced from the Amulet. During the second half of this period, the ore averaged 4.2 per cent copper, 16.3 per cent zinc, and 0.02 oz. gold and 3.35 oz. silver per ton. Due to the prevailing low prices of metals, there was no further production until July, 1937. Output was greatly accelerated in 1940 when the newly found Lower A orebody assumed the main burden of production. Up to January 1st, 1946, mill reports indicate the treatment of the following ore: GENERAL GEOLOGYFig. 1 shows the geology of the entire property. To the east is the Lake Dufault granodiorite stock and to the west the Flavrian Lake granite mass. Around the granodiorite and separating the Waite from: the Amulet section is an older diorite intrusion. The ore occurs in a series of lavas that form a broad anticline pitching eastward at a relatively low angle into the Lake Dufault intrusives. There are several steep east-west faults. The late Powell diabase dyke is shown, also the general areas of strong dalmatianite alteration, a type closely associated with the sulphide mineralization."
