The St. Lawrence Valley of Quebec lies in an earthquake danger zone, the main centers of which appear to be Murray Bay, Montreal and Quebec City. This paper compares conditions in this "earthquake zone" with those of other, currently more active, earthquake zones of the Earth, deals briefly with the mechanics of earth movements and outlines the means by which earthquakes are re-corded. An account is then given of the earthquakes which have occurred in the Province of Quebec -from that of 1534-35 to the earthquake of 1925. A 50-year frequency cycle is implied. The general conclusion is that the 11robability of future earthquakes should be given more consideration in the construction of buildings in the St. Lawrence Valley region.

"AbstractThe experiments described show that crude bismuth metal containing up to 5 per •cent lead, 0.14 per cent silver, 0.015 per cent copper, 0.02 per cent iron, .and small amounts of antimony, nickel, and tin may be refined to a bismuth content of 99.98 per cent by distillation followed by chlorination. It also is shown that bismuth trichloride of high ,purity may be produced by passing chlorine over hot •crude bismuth metal and allowing the resulting vapours to •condense in a cooler .part of the system.IntroductionBISMUTH is used in the production of alloys and pharmaceuticals. During 1952, the New York price for the refined metal was $2.25 per pound in ton lots.Some months-ago a Canadian producer requested the Mines Branch to investigate methods of refining the bismuth which they had been producing. Their crude product had been selling for $1.50 to $1.70 per pound and it was desired to increase its purity to at least 99.98 per cent so that it could be sold for $2.25 per pound."

"The Fort Knox gold deposit is hosted within the Fort Knox Pluton, a Cretaceous multiphase granitic body that intrudes the Fairbanks schist. Gold occurs along the margins of stockwork veins and veinlets, quartz-filled shear zones, and along fractures within the granite. The mineralization is generally sulphide-poor and closely associated with trace amounts of bismuth, tellurium and to a lesser extent with molybdenum and tungsten. At present, proven/probable reserve estimates, based on a cutoff grade of 0.39 g/t Au, are 158.3 million tonnes grading 0.83 g/t Au.The Fairbanks schist comprises the bulk of the country rock. The dominant lithologies present include muscovite-quartz schist and micaceous quartzite. Immediately north and south of the main orebody, mixed metamorphic lithologies of the Cleary sequence, a subunit of the Fairbanks schist, have been mapped. Development of local zones of weakness, most likely due to a broad regional warping event, resulted in brittle-ductile deformation and activation of a northwest-southeast shear couple between contrasting lithologies.The Fort Knox Pluton consists of at least three phases based primarily on textural differences. Intrusion of a fine-grained granite was followed by a medium-grained porphyritic granite. The youngest intrusive phase is a coarse-grained, seriate porphyritic granite, the Vogt Stock. The Vogt Stock forms an elongate dome with the axis in the east-west direction. Structures displayed in the overlying units, believed to be the result of doming, include tension fiSSUres and longitudinal fractures.Premineralization fractures, the result of the magmatic doming, provided conduits for initial stockwork quartz vein development and quartz enrichment in shear zones. Weak development of vein-controlled phyl/ic, potassic, albitic, and argillic alteration styles are present. Evidence of a late thermal event resulting in a low-temperature alteration assemblage of calcite + zeolite (stilbite) + chalcedony + clay occupies breccia zones, joint surfaces, and fractures within the granite."

"Phosphorus in iron ores is considered as a deleterious component to iron making reflecting in cold shortness of the produced steel. The present study investigates the phosphorus migration pattern resulting from thermal treatment of an oolitic-type iron concentrate with and without additives. To this end focused mineralogical and microscopic observations were performed. The results have shown that roasting with alkaline additive drives phosphorus outside the hematite hosting mineral, however it remains evenly distributed inside the volume of the oolites. It penetrates inside the newly formed cementing phases of Al- Na-Si-Fe-type and also fills the interstices between the crystals. Other than phosphorus, aluminum, calcium and iron tend also to migrate towards the amorphous-type cementing phase. Finally, the possibilities for P removal by means of magnetic separation and acid leaching of the roasted concentrate were evaluated. The obtained final product presents a standard iron concentrate suitable for steelmaking with its phosphorous being dropped from 0.71% to 0.05% and iron grade of a nearly 66% being reached. INTRODUCTIONSignificant proven reserves of iron ores are still not exploitable due to lack of an economically viable and efficient technology for removal of phosphorus. Among them are the oolitic iron ores with high phosphorus which are estimated to nearly 377 billion tons (Hernandez et al., 2012). Phosphorus is a deleterious component giving a cold shortness to steel and often is penalized if exceeding 0.07%. Most of the high-P iron ores are considered refractory since phosphorus is finely disseminated and is evenly met as phosphate groups inclusions inside the limonite structure. Studies on inclusion of phosphorus in artificially synthesized goethite have shown that it is adsorbed as [HPO4]2- groups bridging the adjacent iron ions (Parfit et al., 1975). The high-phos iron ore originating from Lisakovsk deposit, Kazakhstan presents a similar mineralogical issue because the quantity of P, met as solid solution, is substantially higher than the one in P-containing minerals. A potential reason for that is the ore body formation process from the slow deposition of iron-rich precipitates together with clastic erosional sediments in rivers. There is significant quartz and clays inside and around the oolites. The deposit contains about 1.7 billion tons of measured and indicated reserves at 35–41% iron and 1.1 billion tons of inferred ore have been delineated possessing nearly the same chemical composition (Golubovskaya, 2003; Kokal et al., 2003)."

Direct observation of charge shape and its motion in industrial mills is not possible; therefore, a combination of analytical and physical studies is used to determine charge trajectory. Software packages, which predict charge motion consider only the outermost layer of charge (single ball) and ignore the charge and the interactions of grinding elements. In the new version of the GMT (Grinding Media Trajectory) software, the effect of liners specification and bulk load on charge shape and trajectory are considered. The charge trajectory was measured in a laboratory mill with the diameter of 100 cm and length of 21.5 cm with the transparent end and compared with that of the old version of GMT. Four types of polyurethane rings were accurately machined to scale down the liners arrangements at two industrial mills. The model mill was operated at 55, 70 and 85% of the critical speed for five levels of mill filling (10, 15, 20, 25% and 30% by volume). The experiments indicated that the end walls effect was negligible for the model mill with the length of 10.8 cm and beyond. The proposed relationships to correct the trajectory and charge shape were validated by using the new liner of the Gol-E-Gohar iron ore company AG mill. The positions of shoulder, toe, toe departure and impact points were predicted with the relative errors of 5, 0.7, 2 and 0.2%, respectively. The GMT software was updated with the new relationships. The results of GMT simulation indicated that when the lifter face angle increased from 7 to 30°, the distance between the charge impact point and the toe decreased from 40.1 to 11.2° for 30% filling. The change in the position of the impact point meant increasing the probability of charge impacting the toe, not the liner which favored more efficient comminution practice.

THE Northwest Territories covers a very large area-more than one-third of all Canada-and its most northern point, Cape Columbia in Ellesmere island, is distant only 500 miles from the Pole. Our first knowledge of the Arctic Archipelago, of which Ellesmere island forms a part, resulted from a gold-mining venture in Queen Elizabeth's reign. The English navigators of that time were eager to find a north-westerly and shorter and Jess hazardous route to the riches of China and Japan than that which Magellan had discovered, but they were unaware that the continent then known to bar a direct route extended in great width far to the north. Frobisher was one of these navigators. He reached in 1576 the bay in Baffin island now named after him, convinced that he had found a passage connecting the Atlantic with Asiatic seas. Forced to re-turn after ordeals in which ice, wind, and Eskimos flayed formidable parts, he brought back, among other novelties, a piece o black stone which had been picked up casually by one of his officers, and gave a little of it to the wife of one of the venturers, or financial backers of the enterprise. To quote now from Hakluyt: ? 'She by chance threw and burned it in the fire so long that , at length being taken forth and quenched in a little vinegar, it glistered with a bright marquesset of gold. Whereupon the matter being called in sorne question, it was brought to certain goldminers in London to make assay thereof, who indeed found it to hold gold and that very richly for the quantity." On the strength of this, the venturers, anticipating much profit, launched a second expedition to secure more of this stone, and 143 persons, including 14 miners and finers, set forth in 1577 and returned the same year, with, however, 200 tons of another mineral. Influenced by glowing accounts of veritable mountains of this mineral and by assays made after "additaments"-that is how "salting" in those days was described-the venturers, including Elizabeth, supplied funds for erecting a smelter and refinery at Dartford and outfitting a stilllarger expedition. And so, in 1578, fifteen ships departed with the Queen's blessing, for the same remote shores. After many mishaps, they returned with over 1,000 tons of the mineral, but when it yielded very little of value at the works in Dartford, the? Company of Venturers was forced into liquidation. Though our first prospector and miner was rather inconsiderate of the investors, he proved the existence of an archipelago, hitherto unknown, and secured much information about the new land and its dwellers.

"Conventional electrowinning (EW) of nickel from sulfate electrolytes is complicated by several factors including the requirement for a diaphragm cell to separate the anolyte and catholyte and the need to minimize nickel mist emissions. Developed and commercialized by emewCorporation, this novel process electrowins high purity nickel cathode (99.5%) from copper refinery bleed streams using the proprietary emew vortex EW technology. The emew nickel process incorporates high flow rate in an enclosed cylindrical EW cell operating at high current densities that overcomes the challenges of conventional nickel EW and completely eliminates the risk of nickel mist emissions. The tubular cathodes are easily harvested and mitigate the effect of plating stresses inherent in nickel EW. The present paper describes the emew nickel process and its most recent application to copper refinery bleed streams at full-scale.INTRODUCTION To meet the stringent demand of customers, nickel producers are giving prime importance to production of high purity nickel cathodes. The major challenge for refineries is to improve cathode quality and appearance despite fluctuating electrolyte impurity levels. The basis of achieving good quality cathode includes the control of electrolyte impurities and consistency of specific process conditions. The commercial operation of emew nickel technology has been successfully implemented and has demonstrated the ability to produce high quality nickel cathode from refinery bleeds. This paper emphasizes the importance of upstream impurity removal to achieve the required nickel emew feed composition by evaluating the benefits of using selective precipitation as a purification scheme with the aim of improving the overall nickel recovery while ensuring suitable nickel concentration in the advanced electrolyte is achieved. Nickel electrowinning is similar to other electrowinning processes that employ insoluble metal anodes & cathodes. It requires the passage of direct current between two electrodes that are immersed in a conductive, aqueous solution of nickel salts. For the recovery of nickel from solution, the most common methods are electrowinning and hydrogen reduction. Electrowinning usually occurs from sulfate, chloride or mixed sulfate/chloride electrolytes. In sulfate electrolytes, nickel electrowinning cells are normally designed to achieve specific criteria as outlined below (Robinson & Tuppa, 2002):"

"The current American ""energy crisis"", occurring in the midst of a global debate on the adequacy of mineral supplies to support present and projected levels of world consumption, has focused attention on Canada as a major world producer of minerals. Exports of minerals account for approximately one-third of Canadian foreign earnings; more than half of these exports are to the United States. Although the United States is a net importer of most industrially important metals, with the exception of nickel and zinc, only a small part of American mineral imports are from Canada; these imports are minerals for which geographical proximity and strategic considerations are important. In the short-term, Canada is more dependent on her exports to the U.S. than America is on imports from Canada. It is argued that Canada, far from indulging in economic nationalism to preserve her resources, should expand her exports while the markets are available."

"The Precambrian sedimentary series of the Labrador geosyncline, including iron formation, extends into southwestern Labrador and adjacent Quebec. The iron formation consisted of primary oxide, silicate, and carbonate facies which were deposited simultaneously in an irregular basin in response to migratory environmental conditions. The iron formation isochemically recrystallized to coarse-grained quartz-iron oxide, iron silicate, and quartz-iron carbon-ate rocks during prolonged regional metamorphism. The rocks are deformed on two deformation axes intersecting at large angles, and are characterized by isoclinal to recumbent folds. Parts of the formation have been profoundly affected by a post-metamorphic leaching and oxidizing environment."

"In this paper, the electrochemical behavior of ferric and ferrous couple on the pyrite surface was studied by application of the chronoamperometry technique in an acidic solution at room temperatures and atmospheric pressure. The effects of the pyrite origin, ferric and ferrous ions concentration on the electron transfer kinetics of Fe3+/Fe2+ reaction were probed. Tafel behavior of all the test conditions were developed. The results showed that the ferric-ferrous reaction on pyrite electrodes with different origins have a common mechanism, despite different reaction kinetics. The exchange current densities of the redox reaction have the same magnitude of about 10-5 A·cm-2, which is far lower than the value reported for the gold and platinum electrodes, but larger than that of the chalcopyrite electrode. The cathodic transfer coefficients are between 0.4 and 0.5, while the anodic transfer coefficients appear unusual with the lowest value being 0.23. It was also demonstrated that an increase of one order of magnitude of iron concentration has no clear effect on the exchange current density and cathodic transfer coefficients of Fe3+/Fe2+ redox reaction.INTRODUCTIONPyrite, FeS2, is mostly considered as a gangue mineral which frequently coexists with valuable minerals and metals, such as gold, copper and nickel. Its separation from valuable minerals can be a costly process (Chandra & Gerson, 2010). In refractory gold ores, the fine gold particles are locked inside the pyrite structure. Oxidative leaching of pyrite is a hydrometallurgical method to destroy the structure of pyrite and expose the fine gold particles to the cyanide solution in the downstream cyanidation circuit. Pyrite oxidative leaching can be achieved by oxidation of pyrite via oxygen and ferric ion(McKibben & Barnes, 1986). In fact, pyrite oxidation by oxygen and ferric is a significant source of acid mine drainage(AMD), which adversely causes serious environmental problems(V. P. Evangelou, 1995).The pyrite oxidation mechanism is accomplished in three consecutive steps: (i) pyrite is oxidized by oxygen and ferrous ion formation (Eq. 1); (ii) ferrous oxidation by oxygen and ferric ion formation (Eq. 2); (iii) pyrite oxidation by means of ferric ions (Eq. 3). "The goal of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of mechanochemical activation by planetary milling as method to enhance the recovery of cerium from rare earth ores. For this purpose, a weathered ore was first ground by planetary milling and then leached by sulfuric acid. The influence of planetary milling was investigated by assisting the experiments with X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) in cerium LIII-edge and inductively coupled plasma spectrometry to measure the concentration of cerium dissolved by leaching. Results showed that, by increasing the grinding time, although the particle size of the specimen increased due to agglomeration, the recovery of cerium significantly increased. This finding clearly indicated that a smaller particle size actually hinders the recovery of cerium. In particular, XAFS analysis revealed that the longer the grinding time, the more tetravalent cerium could be converted into trivalent cerium and such conversion, also called mechanochemical reaction was beneficial to the recovery of cerium. Based on the obtained results, it was confirmed that approximately 70% of cerium could be recovered by mechanochemically activated leaching of rare earth ores.INTRODUCTION Rare earth elements (REEs) are a group of 17 chemically similar metallic elements comprising lanthanides, scandium and yttrium. Since REEs have various unique physical and/or chemical properties, they have become essential materials for advanced application (Adachi, 2015). REEs used in industry are usually supplied as rare earth minerals. In the last decades, flotation, gravity separation, magnetic separation and leaching have been widely applied to recovery of REEs from rare earth minerals like monazite (Archana, Rekha, Manis, Jitendra, & Jin, 2015). Among these operations, leaching has been widely studied in the recent years to improve the state of the art (Archana, Rekha, Manis, Jitendra, & Jin, 2015; Xiao, Feng, Huang, Huang, Chen, Liu, Wang, & Long, 2016; Farzaneh, Fereshteh, & Ahmad, 2017). Aiming to enhance recovery of REEs from rare earth minerals, a possible advancement of leaching technology could be the mechanochemically activation of the ore by high-intensity milling (Alorro, 2016). In the mechanochemical activation, an improvement of the leaching performances can be achieved through high-intensity milling operations which result into a dramatic decrease of the mineral particle size with a consequent improvement of the physical kinetics of leaching. Furthermore, the high mechanical energy provided to the sample during milling can determine the rupture of the crystal structure of the mineral, thereby transforming it into a more leachable form."

"Pressure oxidation is used to liberate gold from refractory sulphide ore and concentrates with over fifteen autoclaves in operation. Despite the importance of pressure oxidation, the autoclave chemistry and chemical thermodynamics are not well established. For example, there is no consensus on aqueous iron speciation or stability of jarosite phases. Additionally, there remains questions about basic ferric sulphate formation and stability. In addition to a review of the current state of knowledge, a methodology to study the ferric precipitation reaction and relate the results to chemical thermodynamic predictions is presented which will be used to accurately define the phase boundaries of the iron precipitates in the future (hematite, jarosite and basic ferric sulphate).INTRODUCTION With declining availability of orebodies that respond to simple leaching conditions, pressure oxidation has become a prevalent technology to liberate gold locked in sulphide mineral matrices. Gold pressure oxidation was established 32 years ago, with McLaughlin being the first facility in 1985 (Thomas & Pearson, 2016). Pressure oxidation is carried out at elevated temperatures ranging from 180 to 240°C as shown in the summary of operations in Table 1 (Ruonala et al., 2016; Fleming, 2010).A considerable amount of research has been done to study iron solubility and precipitation under autoclave conditions (Tozawa & Sasaki, 1986; Umetsu et al., 1977; Sasaki et al., 1993; Fleuriault, 2016; Cheng & Demopoulos, 2004; Papangelakis et al., 1994; Yue et al., 2003). These reports provide a description of the process chemistry and iron behaviour in the autoclave. However, there remain questions about the type and stability of aqueous species and solid phases. This detailed information is required to build a robust chemical thermodynamic model of the system, allowing for equilibrium and kinetic reaction limitations to be discerned."

Rare earth elements (REEs) become increasingly significant for renewable energy devices and high-technology electronic products because of their large-scale popularity and applications. In this project, a field-emission scanning electron microscope was used to characterize the composition and distribution of REEs-bearing minerals. X-ray elemental maps were acquired with a large area x-ray detector (60 and 80 mm2 collecting area) and annular detector (60 mm2 collecting area), which allow fast x-ray acquisition at high count rate. These elemental maps were transformed into phase maps, which are used to identify the composition of the mineral phases and the REEs distribution over a large area. The phase maps are an easy way to distinguish the phases with and without REEs and compare the efficiency of different REEs extraction processes. Different methods (manual and automatic) for producing phase map were studied by comparing the distribution of REEs obtained from the same area.

An optimized long-term mine planning determines the best order of material extraction, so that the Net Present Value (NPV) becomes maximum. In the case of oil sands surface mining, one of the key constraints in NPV maximization is the volume of tailings slurry that will be generated downstream. Specifications of tailings slurry are also important from environmental perspective. Moreover, most of the material that will be used for the reclamation of tailings ponds in later periods is generated in extraction and processing of oil sands. In this paper, an integrated optimization framework is proposed to maximize the NPV of the produced oil sands, with respect to tailings capacity constraints and reclamation material requirements. A mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model is developed to find the optimal solution for long-term mine planning problem. The proposed model is coded in Matlab and has been run using CPLEX for verification. The results for real-case oil sands dataset show that the optimal production schedule meets material requirements for reclamation, tailings volume is within tailings capacity range in all periods and the production schedule follows the predetermined horizontal direction.

Major Project Blues Over the last two decades, almost every major project has suffered significant cost overruns, significant schedule delays, and/or poor quality work. Exceptions are rare and most projects that tout being ?On Time and Under Budget? have re-cast schedules, significantly modified scope or revised base estimates. The problem isn?t new. In the late 1980?s the Rand Corporation published a study showing that 80% of all major projects had significant cost and schedule overruns. The problem is not restricted to the Canadian environment, or to a specific industry. It is a global problem.

Projects as regards state-of-the-art mechatronic systems aiming at increase of safety in the mining industry and at improvement of coal production technologies, which have been completed at the KOMAG Institute of Mining Technology, are presented. These projects cover automation, monitoring and visualization systems, systems for implementation of artificial intelligence techniques, and database recording systems. iRIS system for electronic marking, identification, and recording of components of powered roof supports, which was implemented in 31 Polish mining enterprises, is presented as an example of the work directly associated with an increase of operational safety. Specialists from KOMAG, ELSTA, Ltd., and Silesian University of Technology in Poland, have developed flexible, configurable, and scalable system for data management, which refers to all fixed assets of mining enterprises, meeting the requirements of users as regards marking and identification of fixed assets. The system for control of roadheaders using intelligent algorithms, based on artificial intelligence techniques is also the example of innovative actions. This system aims at increasing the safety and effectiveness of teamwork due to a possibility of remote, semiautonomous operation. Introduction of artificial intelligence technology enables adaptation of roadheader mining system to the present mining-and-geological conditions. Moreover, work aiming at implementation of state-of-the-art system for control of mine jig?s beneficiation node, integrating machines and equipment in one system, is carried out as regards automation, information integration, and visualization in coal beneficiation process. Work on recovery and conversion of thermal energy, which is a by-product during operation of machines and equipment, especially mine diesel drives, is presented. Systems for energy recuperation are more and more important due to the necessity of continuous increase of power production efficiency.

"The gold deposits of the Caribou mine are representative of those of the Province of Nova Scotia as a whole. The ore shoots within the deposits, in common with those elsewhere within the Province, are associated usually with interruptions or irregularities in the broader and uniform fold structures. The structural factors localizing ore deposition as applied more specifically to the Caribou mine are demonstrated chiefly by the close relationship of the two principal ore shoots, known as the main orebody and the 'high-grade' vein, with a pitching drag fold developed in the southeast limb of the major northeast-southwest trending anticlinal fold or elongated dome that constitutes the primary structural feature of the Caribou gold district. It is of interest to note that the evidence indicates that this drag fold, in common with other folds subsidiary to the primary fold, formed as a result of movement similar in nature to that which caused the primary fold itself. Presumably, therefore, these folds are coincident in time.The property described here as the Caribou mine is an amalgamation of two adjacent properties formerly known as the Ross and the Nova Scotia Gold, but which since 1934 have been controlled and operated as a unit by The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited. The Caribou mine is situated in the Caribou gold district about 45 miles to the northeast of the city of Halifax and about 6 miles to the north of the Moose River gold district.The history of mining at Caribou dates back to 1867. The first recorded gold production is for 1869. From 1869 to 1933 the gold produced from the mines of the Caribou district aggregated 47,249 oz. from 93,234 tons of ore treated. The grade of the ore on the basis of the gold actually recovered from the district would thus average 72 oz. gold a ton, which, as will be noted from the following, is precisely the grade of the ore treated from the Caribou mine during operations by The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company. These operations commenced in September, 1934, and milling on a commercial basis was under way during 1938. Since that time production, apart from a short period in 1945 during which efforts were concentrated on development work, was continuous to early in 1947, when the mine closed down owing to exhaustion of the known orebodies. Gold produced from the Caribou mine by The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company from September, 1934, to the close of 1946 aggregated 43,205 oz. from 90,754 tons of ore milled; the grade of ore treated averaged 0.50 oz. gold a ton. The indicated average grade of O.S oz. gold a ton for the ore of the Caribou district throughout its mining history ranks somewhat higher than the 0.37 oz. a ton average for the ore milled to date from the several gold districts throughout the Province as a whole according to the production statistics of the Provincial Department of Mines."

Between 1993 and 2003, a series of AG and SAG mill pilot plant trials were conducted using Hardinge Ical pilot plant scale SAG mills on numerous ore samples and ranging across a wide variety of operating conditions. The data from these tests were used to evaluate the design of SAG and AG mill circuits for over a dozen projects, of which about half were eventually constructed and commissioned. The data were also used in the development of SAG mill modelling, scale-up and simulation procedures by several consultants who had access to part of the data set. Recently, we have had the opportunity to bring this data together and further analyse the consolidated dataset. This paper reports on the outcomes of this analysis that has identified the impacts of different AG/SAG circuit flowsheets and operating conditions on energy efficiency and operating cost.

Full-scale rupture tests were conducted on 508 mm (20 in) diameter API X-60 5.7 mm wall thickness pipes containing either axial semi-elliptical cracks or simulated corrosion defects with equivalent depths ranging from 20 to 60 percent thickness. In the case of the cracks, the failure pressures were predicted with reasonable accuracy when considering a level 3 failure assessment diagram (FAD) procedure based on API 579, as compared to level 2 FAD, since the mechanical properties were known. In both cases, the accuracy improved for shallower cracks. Considering simulated corrosion defects, the RSTRENG approach provided more reliable results on predicting the collapse pressure. For a similar depth and profile, the cracked pipes failed at a lower pressure than those containing simulated corrosion defects of equivalent depth.

"Investigation and 3D analysis of Heap no. 2 of Meydook copper complex was the subject of this study. In this project all geological and geotechnical investigations conducted in the mine were evaluated aiming at determination of Heap no. 2 design parameters. The main objective of the project was to evaluate the potential for construction of Heap. No. 2 on a waste dump built in a valley in the north side of the pit.Considering the space limitation for dump location this was a viable alternative to reduce the costs associated with heap no. 2 construction. Moreover, it allowed for a significant reduction in overall mining costs. Considering the project condition, a 3D analysis of heap major structures including; valley rock foundation, waste dump, and low grade ore was carried out. Five sets of analyses were conducted and the displacement and stress fields were calculated within the heap no. 2 components. In all analyses conducted the subsident profile was determined for the valley base rock and heap foundation (waste dump). Moreover, the shear interaction between heap and waste dump was evaluated at the heap interface. The analyses results showed that the maximum settlement at the heap base is about 4-5 cm and the waste dump provides a safe and reliable base for heap construction. Moreover, the analysis results showed that the selected %5 grade for the heap interface is good and does not pose any risk in terms of heap Interface shear displacements. A sensitivity analysis of heap mechanical parameters was also conducted. The obtained results show that if the friction angle of heap material is reduced below 25 degree due to acid spraying process, the heap walls become unstable and the heap geometry must be redesigned."
