There has been an increasing trend in recent months by regulatory agencies to require that estimates be made of the hydraulic head acting, under operational conditions, on the surface of primary leach pad liners. This move towards inferred performance standards, rather than specifying a prescriptive standard for all sites regardless of economics, is to be generally welcomed. The theory of flow on a sloped beach pad, which was developed by East et al, 1987 (Reference 1 and 3) has been refined and extended. Unitized curves have been developed by graphically displaying the seepage losses and resulting dissolved gold lost as seepage through the primary liner as an aid to pad liner selection and design. Very little information is available of actual hydraulic head profiles acting on the liners beneath heap leached ores. Attempts have been made to measure these by drilling from the top of the heap and installing piezometers at the base. With this procedure it is difficult to obtain accurate data due to the fact that the drilling operation itself creates a highly permeable vertical flow path which may not exist to the same degree elsewhere in the heap. Combined with the fact that it is almost impossible to ensure that the piezometer tip is sitting directly above the liner without the risk of causing some damage to the liner itself. The best time to install hydraulic head monitoring devices on the pad liner is during construction and when piezometers can be carefully placed directly above the liner and suitably protected hydraulic lines laid to ensure full hydrostatic head measurement with simple manometer devices.

INTRODUCTION Tens of deposits in' coal basins of Western and Eastern Siberia are being open-mined with the technology of overburden rehandling into the mined out space of pits by excavators - draglines. This technology is preferred due to the high productive Russian equipment, comparatively low cost, and relatively small Influence exerted on the environment. The basic tendency of the last decades is the aspiration for enlarging the sphere of the' technology application for development of gentle and steeply dipping seams with the use of blast destruction of overburden and with combined winning of loose alluviums and rock partings. Complex technological schemes with multiple rehandling are widely used. In addition to it, stripping workings, intermediate storage of mineral resources, placing of transport dumps, and engineering construction can be realized with the use of draglines. More than ten of dragline faces are simultaneously exploited in some pits, and the rehandling coefficient ranks from 0.1 to 8. Here, conditions of winning and placing (position of a face and existing dump) are varying in space and time; this leads to the necessity of reconsidering the order for conduction of works (schemes) within the current designing. By now, in order to this, it is required to realize complex engineering calculations by graph-analytical methods and definite experience. The need is available for automatization of this process by creation of the corresponding software. The software is to: • Orient on the active pits and use information on the existing geology, equipment, and situation in mine. • Calculate the existing schemes more operative and on a higher qualitative level to model their development in a pit space with parameter optimization. • Predict situations demanding to change the existing technology for mining operations and recommend optimal technological schemes. METHODOLOGICAL FOUNDATIONS FOR MODELING The problem is not new, it has more than fifty year-old history of creating mathematical models algorithms, and programs in Russia, Ukraine, USA, Canada. Australia and other countries with the developed mining branch. Conventionally, all population of programs can be divided into three groups depending on goal and interval of prediction: • Long-term programs used in designing and intended for substantiation of the nine capacity, selection of mining system, establishment of limits for applying the technology of overburden rehandling. Introduction It has long been known that there are extensive deposits of phosphate-bearing deposits in the Coastal Plain of Georgia in many locations that are similar to those being mined commercially in central Florida. A major drilling program was conducted in 1966-67 by the Georgia Geological Survey (GGS). The economic potential of some of the material uncovered was evaluated at that time by a team at Georgia Institute of Technology led by Dr. J.E. Husted. There were some promising results. Since then, there has been little commercial interest in pursuing this matter, though the potential for development remains. In the long term, Georgia's phosphorite deposits could be a major source of income to the state if they were commercially processed. Phosphorite deposits contain significant levels of uranium and thorium. Uranium concentrations in Florida phosphate aggregates have been found to be 120 to 140 ppm. The presence of high concentrations of uranium means that there is a small but finite concentration of radium, which subsequently leads to radon gas emanation. It is the radon emanation and its progeny that may pose the largest health problem in many types of mining. Surface mining operations can possibly elevate the radon and radon daughter concentration in the vicinity. There is always some public concern whether any increase in the radon concentration in the atmosphere by mining (surface mining in the phosphorite case) could elevate the risk of cancer in the nearby population. At the present time, a great deal of attention has been devoted to the possible health effects of radon and its decay products in the inhaled air in mines and inside buildings built on mill tailings or uranium-bearing rock (Gesell and Lowder, 1980). Several evaluations have been published on the potential health effects of the Florida phosphate operations (Guimond and Windham, 1975; Roessler et al., 1980; Travis et al., 1979) and for buildings incorporating phosphate slag aggregates (Kahn, Eichholz, and Clarke, 1983; Roessler, Roessler, and Bolch, 1983). They all indicate that such potential effects are small, but tangible, compared with other radiation effects, for instance in the nuclear industry (Cohen, 1981). In view of the current concern, especially by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), with the radiological consequences of large-scale mining of uranium-bearing phosphate rock (Guimond and Windham, 1975), it was decided to assess the potential radiological consequences if the Georgia deposits were developed. This paper presents an attempt to estimate the magnitude of any radon-based health effects that might arise from future mining operations in selected areas of the Georgia coastal region. To do this, a calculational model was developed that took into account the mining operations themselves, the atmospheric dispersion of the radon released, and the radon daughter concentrations in nearby towns. The model was applied to both extremes. The first application was a hypothetical mining operation in Echols County. Echols County is very sparsely populated and, unless living very close to the site, a person would probably experience little radiation exposure, if any. The model tries to prove this point. The second application was at a site near Savannah, Georgia. Both sites contain economically feasible phosphorite deposits and were not entirely hypothetical in that sense. Site selection In the course of the South Georgia Minerals Program (Furcron, 1967), an extensive series of drill core samples had been collected from various mineral occurrences in the coastal plain. It was found that the cores from the previous drilling program (Furcron, 1967), though carefully preserved, were not readily accessible. But the GGS reports did contain gamma logs of all the holes surveyed. With the cooperation of Dr. Neal Shapiro of the Survey, some core samples were selected and assayed, and used to calibrate the gamma log data. Samples from locations known to have detectable radioactivity were screened and counted. Their measured uranium content was used to calibrate the gamma log profiles for those same holes as obtained by the GGS. On this basis, two of the higher-level sites were selected and the calibration was used to obtain integrated uranium concentrations over the length of the borehole. It is customary to describe radon and radon-daughter concentrations in "working levels" (WL), where one WL represents a concentration of radon daughters capable of releasing 130 000 MeV of alpha particles, equivalent to 100 pCi of radon in equilibrium with its daughters per liter of air. A representative concentration is 0.15 WL, below which radon levels are widely considered to be negligible. For the mine sites selected, the surface area and rock volume were determined to estimate their radon content. Working-level values were then estimated for the assumed radon release from the crushed ore and the exposed surfaces of the mine pit. According to Kisielewski (1980), 93.4% of all radon released from open-pit operations is released from the ore zone; thus, the calculations assumed that those surface areas were the main sources.

Studies in eastern Ohio, northern West Virginia, and southwestern Pennsylvania determined whether subsidence caused by longwall mining influences soil moisture and tree growth. Soil moisture was measured both over new longwall panels and over an unmined control area throughout the growing seasons of 1990, a wet year when the panels were excavated, and 1991, a dry year. No significant effects of mining could be detected. Tree growth was studied in two pairs of woodlots. In each pair, one woodlot was located over a longwall panel excavated about 1980 and the other over an unmined area. Differences in tree growth between mined and unmined areas were neither significant (for most species) nor consistent in direction. The above results imply that if mining does have impacts they are likely to be highly site-specific and localized such as by disruptions of springs or soil slippage.

INTRODUCTION Radioactive deposits were observed in 1972 in some of the Upper Silesian coal mines. They were located mainly in the drains in galeries and on the inside surfaces of water pipes. They also caused some problems by accumulating in water pumps. It has been postulated that the deposits are produced by natural radioactive waters seeping from the rocks. Investigations were initiated to answer the following questions: - What is the composition and the amount of radioactivity in the deposits? - What radioisotopes are present in the water? - How are the radioactive deposits formed? - Do the radioactive waters also occur in other mines? - How does the radioactivity of the water depend on chemical composition? - What is the origin of the radioactive water? - Does the water and the deposits cause radiation hazards for miners? -How can the radiation hazard be reduced? METHODS OF MEASUREMENT Determination of Radium Isotopes in Water The commonly used methods of radium determination in water are either based on measurements of the radioactivity of 222Rn which is in equilibrium with 226Ra, or on the detection of alpha particles of the radium radioisotopes after chemical separation of radium from the water sample. The method based on radon activity measurements is very sensitive and does not require any chemical Separation, but it can be used for determination of 226Ra from the uranium series only, because the thorium daughter 220Rn has too short a half-life (55s to yield the required accuracy. The method developed by Goldin, 1961 [2] involved alpha-particle measurements in thin layers of RaS04 and BaS04 separated from the water. This method is not convenient for saline water and water with high barium concentration because the amount of barium carrier in this case is too large to obtain a thin layer of precipitate with sufficient activity. The Upper Silesian carboniferous waters are often saline with high barium content, so the method described by Goldin was not convenient for this case and it was necessary to change the detection system and modify the chemical preparation. The procedure developed by the authors for the determination of radium isotopes in water was as follows: - Depending on the Ba2+ content and the required sensitivity of measurement, a water sample of 200 cm3 to 3 dm3 was taken. - 10 cm3 of 0.25 M citric acid and 5 cm3 15M ammonia was added to form complex Ba2+ ions and avoid the immediate precipitation of BaSO4. (This was repeated as long as the addition of BaC12 did not form a precipitate.) - 1 cm3 of 1N solution of Pb(N03)2 as a carrier for radioactive isotopes of lead and 10 cm3 of 0.1 N BaC12 as a carrier for radium were added. - The sample was heated to the boiling point and the precipitation of RaS04, BaSO4 and PbS04 with 50% H2SO4 was carried out. - After several hours the sample was centrifuged and the precipitate was purified by washing with nitric acid and distilled water. - The precipitate was then redisolved in 20 cm3 0.125 M Na2EDTA and 3 cm3 6M ammonia and reprecipitated from the solution by dropwise addition of acetic acid to d pH of 4.5. At this value of pH, precipitation occurs only for the barium and radium sulfates, while lead and all other radioactive elements remain in the solution. The date and time of deposit precipitation was recorded. - The final barium-radium sulfate mixture was washed with distilled water and transferred to standard measurement vials. - Each vial containing a deposit had 6 cm3 of distilled water added and was then shaken vigorously. 12 cm3 of liquid gelling scintillator (INSTA-GEL UNISOLV-1 type) was then added and the vi 1 was shaken again. After a while the scintillator turns into a milky gel in which the deposit is uniformly distributed. - The standard sample of 226Ra was prepared in the same way. - The activity of the samples was measured using a liquid scintillation spectrometer. (In this case the TRICARB 3320 produced by Packard Instruments, was used). Tests run on standard radium solutions provided by Amersham Radiochemical Centre indicated that this method of measurement enables one to achieve an efficiency of almost 100% (within measurement error). For alpha particles no quenching effect was observed for the BaS04 concentration in the range up to 80 mg of BaS04 per 1 cm3 of liquid scintillator coctail (Fig. 1). This provides a sensitive determination of radium in water with high barium content and also in saline water. In saline water the solubility of barium sulfate is much higher than in

As a result of concern for the citizens of the State of Illinois who owned structures above underground mine workings, the Illinois State Legislature passed House Bill 158 in 1978. This bill amends the Illinois lnsurance Code and creates the Mine Subsidence Reinsurance Fund which is an insurance pool that is to receive a state appropriation of $500,000 as "start-up" money. One hundred thousand dollars has been paid to the fund as of October, 1982. The Fund is to return this appropriation to the State and is to remain self-supporting from premiums. The Fund utilized a pre-existing institution, which also was an insurance pool, the "Fair Plan Facility" and its governing Board, consisting primarily of insurance executives, to administer the program. The Mine Subsidence lnsurance Act went into effect October 1, 1979, and the bill provides that property owners in the State of Illinois may purchase up to $50,000 of mine subsidence insurance which is attached to their fire insurance policy. The deductible is normally 2%, but cannot be less than $250 or more than $500. The annual rate structure for residential structures in 1981 for $50,000 coverage is $10 (frame), and $12 (masonry). The rate structure for commercial buildings is based on the value of the building and the rates for $50,000 maximum coverage is adjusted upward. The insurance was mandated by the State Department of lnsurance and rolled onto the insurance policies of the homeowners in 34 counties which had been recognized as having sufficient exposure to subsidence damage to be covered by the Act. One percent or more of the land surface is undermined in each of the 34 counties. In the other counties undermined in the State of Illinois, insurance is available to the homeowner upon request to the private insurance carrier.

The Marysvale volcanic field of west-central Utah contains large areas of argillically altered rocks (fig. 1) that, in turn, enclose smaller areas of fine-grained, medium-grade, replacement alunite deposits and coarsely crystalline, high-grade vein-type alunite deposits. The largest replacement alunite deposits are [ ] located peripheral to a 23-m.y.-old monzonite stock called the Central Intrusive (fig. 1). The deposits formed in near-surface, highly oxidizing environments at the tops of hydrothermal plumes that were spaced irregularly around the stock. The deposits are horizontally zoned from alunitic cores through kaolinitic to propylitic envelopes. Vertically, characteristic alteration minerals progress from a pyrite-propylitic alteration assemblage at the base, upward through alunitic, jarositic, and hematitic assemblages to a flooded silica cap as shown on figure 2. The silica caps are cut by hydrothermal explosion breccias. d34Sso4 values of + 11.5 to + 15.4 permil indicate that sulfur in the hydrothermal plume was derived from underlying Mesozoic evaporites. The sharp upward transition from pyrite- propylite to alunite probably marks the paleowater table, and the top of the flooded silica cap represents the paleoground surface. Basin-Range extensional tectonism began shortly after alteration, and buried the replacement alunite deposits in basins beneath sediments eroded from uplands. The deposits were only recently exhumed.

Pea Ridge Iron Ore Co., previously Meramec Mining Co., a joint venture by Bethlehem Steel Corp. and St. Joe Minerals Corp., mines and pelletizes iron ore at the Pea Ridge mine. The Pea Ridge property, now wholly owned by St. Joe, is located near Sullivan, MO, about 112 km (70 miles) southwest of St. Louis. The ore body was delineated in the mid-1950s by St. Joe during a lead exploration program. The first test holes drilled on the Pea Ridge magnetic anomaly revealed the presence of a large magnetite deposit; further drill¬ing in 1956 and 1957 confirmed that the ore body was minable. Meramec Mining Co. was incorporated in 1957 and shaft sinking began late in the year. Pro¬duction commenced in April 1964. The ore body is overlain by about 396 m (1300 ft) of flat-bedded sediments. It is tabular, about 792 m (2600 ft) long, and up to 182 m (600 ft) thick. It dips about 1.39 rad (80°) and is of unknown depth. The ore is mainly high grade magnetite with small zones of specular hematite. The wall rock is a Precambrian rhyolite porphyry. The mine was initially started with five major levels on 45-m (150-ft) intervals. Crosscuts were driven across the ore body on 58-m (190-ft) centers. Banks of stopes were mined between the crosscuts by a modi¬fied shrinkage stoping method (Fig. 1). This was done by undercutting a 12 m (40 ft) wide by 45-m (150-ft) long block and blasting horizontal "lifts" drilled on 1.5-m (5-ft) intervals. A 20-m (65-ft) sill was left between levels which contained the slushing drift, fin¬gers, crown pillar, and adequate thickness for support. By 1971 a "lattice" of pillars had been left and mining had progressed to the point that an orderly pillar re¬covery program was necessary (Fig. 2). INITIAL PILLAR RECOVERY PROGRAM The program was started in the upper western por¬tion of the ore body, furthest from the shafts. Due to the fact that the ore body narrows in the western extremity, the stope orientation was changed to mini¬mize required development. This left pillars 18 to 24 m (60 to 80 ft) wide and up to 79 m (260 ft) in length. The area selected for the start of the program had been developed between the uppermost level at 419 m (1375 ft) below surface and the 510-m (1675-ft) level. Due to the 91-m (300-ft) difference in depth, sublevels were driven on 15-m (50-ft) intervals and the ore was taken by rather classical sublevel stoping methods (Fig. 3). This left a structure with accesses compatible with drilling with 114-mm (41/2-in.) bore drifters mounted on columns. Most holes were drilled 63.5 mm (21h in.) diam and reamed to 100 or 127 mm (4 or 5 in.). Practical depth capability was about 21 m (70 ft) for holes above horizontal and 13 to 15 m (45 to 50 ft) for holes below horizontal. The interdependence of these long pillars necessitated that several of them be blasted simultaneously, making large blasts the only practical approach. Due to the required length of such loading cam¬paigns, it was necessary to select an explosive which could stand in the hole in an underground mine for a 4 to 6 week period. After some consideration a pump¬ able water gel was selected for both uphole and down¬hole loading. This afforded a high velocity, high density explosive which could be handled in large quantities. Loading the downholes was a fairly straightforward process. The holes were lined with an 8 mil polybutylene plastic sleeve and water gel was pumped into them with a double diaphragm pump mounted on the bottom of a stainless steel tub with a 81-kg (180-1b) capacity. Understanding the nature of coal surface heterogeneity is a prerequisite to accurate characterization and efficient control of coal surfaces. New techniques based on the centrifugal immersion of particles from the liquid/ vapor interface and film flotation have led to independent estimation of surface energy distributions in individual coal particles. Changes in the distribution of surface sites due to oxidation and polyacrylamide adsorption on coal are studied here using the above techniques. New information on -possible conformations of adsorbed polymers is also obtained.

INTRODUCTION Radiation is one of the many agents occurring in our environment that is capable of causing cancers. We are all unavoidably exposed to natural background radiation. If we wish to exploit the beneficial uses of radiation in medicine, industry, and for the production of electricity, some further exposures to radiation are almost inevitable. One needs to ensure therefore, that the standards of radiation protection are safely derived and one would want to understand the mechanism by which radiation might cause cancer and genetic defects. In order to study the effects of radiation one can: (1) analyze human data, (2) perform animal experiments, and (3) do molecular level experiments. Indeed all three kinds of information are needed. This paper will concentrate on the steps required to obtain some of the necessary human data regarding health effects, where the concern is about the impact and consequences of long-term low-level exposures to an agent. Such investigations require some knowledge of work histories, dose histories, health "outcomes", and the personal identification of the individual involved. Three inter-related computer systems have been developed at Statistics Canada which have been designed to permit optimal use of a number of different records for our entire country for such health related research. The development of the Canadian Mortality Data Base, the initiation of the National Cancer Incidence Reporting System, and the development of new computer linkage techniques have helped reduce the cost and increase the scale and efficiency of automated follow-up to produce statistics of sickness or death associated with radiation and other carcinogenic agents in mines. These computer systems have already been implemented, and references will be made to studies currently being conducted using these files and facilities (e.g. a study of all Ontario miners, plus various Canadian uranium, fluorospar, salt and nickel miners). We will also look at the kinds of data that need to be collected now, to improve such studies in the future. DELAYED RISKS - THE STUDY SIZE AND COST Delayed effects on human health, as for example industrially caused cancer, can in general only be detected and measured by following-up the individuals to see what eventually becomes of them. What is not generally recognized is that the relatively low levels of individual risk, about which the public is often concerned, usually requires for their detection that very large numbers of "exposed" and "control" individuals (e.g. 10,000 to 100,000 or more) be followed over a period of two or three decades to determine when they die, what they die of, and whether they contracted cancer or some other disease of special concern. Thus, it is frequently exceedingly difficult to make such investigations cost-effective so that they will be undertaken at all, and as a result very real risks to health can remain undetected or unquantified. THE MANUAL PROCEDURES Follow-up of individuals by epidemiologists has until recently been a largely manual and clerical operation. It has used a diversity of source record files; local, regional, and national. Often the tracing of people has involved letters sent through the mails and visits to institutions, physicians, municipal offices, and former neighbours. Only thus could one find out whether the individuals were dead or alive. Such studies were necessarily small, or else very expensive. Death registrations have, by tradition, provided a valuable tool for the identification of harmful influences in the environment. However, with the increasing mobility in the population, death may often occur far away from the place of exposure to such an influence. Thus, no longer will simple manual searches in a single registry office suffice to inform the investigator concerning the deaths that may have occurred in a study population, especially when that population is large. In the past, manual follow-up to locate the relevant death registration normally required some prior knowledge of the province and year of death in question, so that the alphabetic indexes could he used to direct researchers to the appropriate bound volumes of registration forms. To search manually in this fashion for any large number of death registrations, without knowing in which year or province the deaths had taken place, or even whether they had yet occurred, would be impractical, since each year in Canada there are about 170,000 deaths. DEATH AND CANCER AS SPECIAL ENDPOINTS Much of recent effort has been focused on the organization of the "endpoint" files required to do long-term follow-up studies on a national scale, because that is a function which other institutions are unable to perform due to the confidentiality laws governing the use of such information. Outside organizations generally come to us with detailed "starting" point records which relate to some specific group requiring study. We carry out these epidemiological searches on a cost-recovery basis. The analytical interpretation of results is normally

The electrostatic charge on spray droplets of ionic surfactant solutions and coal particles was measured and the results were correlated with the dust collection efficiency. When various surfactant were added, the magnitude of the droplet charge increased significantly and it was observed to be a function of surfactant type and concentration. The concentration of maximum droplet charge coincided with surfactant concentration where maximum collection efficiency was observed for these surfactants. Particles of coal also carried substantial amount of charge magnitude of which seemed to be a function of coal rank. Based on the results presented in this paper, it was concluded that ionic surfactant primarily act as a strong electrostatic charge inducer for droplets. Due to interactions between these highly charged droplets and naturally charged particles, the efficiency of droplet-particle collisions play a primary role when compared to the wetting and engulfment phenomenon which could only follow a successful collision. INTRODUCTION Water spray are widely used to suppress airborne dust in mine atmospheres (Walton and Woolcock, 1960; Kobrick, 1970; Hamilton, 1974; Jayaraman et al., 1986). Several investigators have considered the use of surfactants to enhance the effectiveness of water sprays especially for difficult to wet particles such as those of coal (Glanville and Wightman, 1979). The capture of dust particles by water droplets involves droplet-particle collisions, adhesion of particles to droplets, and engulfment of particles into droplets. Surfactants affect these sub processes through their influence on droplet charge, surface tension, and wetting. The last two mechanism have been thoroughly studied in recent years (Walker et al., 1952; Cohen and Rosen, 1981; Glenville and Haley, 1982; Chander et al., 1988; 1991). However, little attention has been paid to the role of electrical charge on particles and droplets on the collision and adhesion of spray droplets and dust particles. Airborne particles of dust have long been known to carry a significant amount of electrostatic charge (Hopper and Laby, 1941; Kunkel, 1948; Kunkel, 1950; Dodd, 1952; Liu et al., 1987; Kutsuwada and Nakamura, 1989). It is reasonable to assume that presence of charge on particles will effect their agglomeration and particle-droplet interactions. Polat et al., (1991) showed that virtually all freshly generated dust particles were agglomerated in air. They suggested that electrostatic charge and humidity were important factors responsible for agglomeration. Previous theoretical studies on the interactions between charged particles and collectors by Nielsen and Hill (1976) show that, the collision efficiency is a strong function of the particle charge. In addition to charge on particles, spray droplets might also carry substantial amount of charge (Chapman, 1937;1938; Blanchard, 1958; Iribarne and Mason, 1967; Jonas and Mason, 1968; Byrne, 1977; Bailey, 1988). In theoretical studies of interactions between a spherical collector and airborne particle, it was found that the collision efficiency was significantly altered depending on whether the collector and the particles were charged. If neither the collector nor the particles carried a charge, the collision occurred by inertial and gravitational forces. The collisions took place on the front part of the collector (the front capture). If either of the collector or the particles were charged, the collision was enhanced due to the induced image forces. If both the collector and the particles were charged, the collision efficiency was significantly affected by the sign of the charge as well as its magnitude. For oppositely charged collector-particle pairs a collision could take place on the rear of the collector even if the particle flied past the collector upon approach (the rear capture) (Nielsen and Hill, 1976; Wang et al., 1986; Chang et al., 1987). On the other hand, the columbic force became negligible as the particle size increased and the inertial force became dominant. The electrostatic attraction was predominant for particles of less than about 2.5 µm in diameter. For particles larger than about 8 µm the inertia of particles was sufficient to overcome the columbic force and inertial impaction became the dominant collision mechanism (Grover and Beard, 1975; Chang, 1987). Previous studies of dust suppression using charged spray droplets generated by applying high voltage to the spray nozzle showed significant improvements in collection efficiencies (USBM open file report, 1983; McCoy et al., 1985). With the price of precious metals at an 18-year low, every ounce of metal produced is important. The theft of metals from mining and refining sites can mean the diffrence between profit and loss for many mining companies. Low metal prices do not reduce the potential for the theft of precious metals. History has shown that the price of gold has little to do with the desire for employees to steal precious or base metals. There is actually evidence that the theft of precious metals increases when the price of this commodity goes down. Several of the major precious metal thefts in the past year took place at silver mines when the price of silver was less than 16 cents/g ($5/oz). How does the lowest gold price in 18 years affect the need for security at precious metals properties? There is no short answer to this question. One reason is because the exposure to theft of precious metals is unique to each property. This makes it important that each property be evaluated individually. More than 95% of all precious metals thefts can be attributed to those working at the mine site. So preventing employee theft is the primary concern. One consideration is the location of the property. Gold selling at any price is still an attractive commodity in countries where the employees are making between US$400 and US$600 a month. It is not uncommon for employees at mines in countries where low wages are the norm to consider the value of a gram or two of gold to be a significant amount of money. A gram or two of gold a day may not seem like much. But if 15 employees steal two grams a day, that equates to a significant amount of money during a year. The type of property where the precious metals product is being recovered is also important. For example, a property with a gravity circuit is more likely to suffer from the theft of gold product than a property where all gold is finely disseminated and the only gold seen in the ore body is through a microscope. Gravity circuits increase an operation's exposure to theft because the grinding circuit that is associated with a gravity circuit often becomes a giant concentrator. Areas such as the bottom of grinding-mill pump boxes, cyclone-feed-pump clean out traps and the sumps often become locations where precious metals concentrate (Figs. 1 and 2). Muck concentrations in these locations can be as high as 25% to 40% of gold or silver. Not long ago, muck was removed from a barren-solution sump at a Merrill Crowe circuit that had concentrated to more than 40% gold. At a milling site in the Pacific Rim, residents of the community adjacent to the mine learned about the value of the concentrates in the sump under the ball mill and committed an armed rob¬bery. While several of their co-conspirators held the em¬ployees at bay with machetes, the others emptied the contents of the sump into buckets and removed it from the site. Armed robbery is not as common as employee theft. However, while this article was being written, an armed robbery occurred at a gold property in Central America. Armed perpetrators took as hostages the night shift employees at a process plant and used cutting torches that were on site to cut into the high-security and gold-storage areas. The perpetrators then stole a company vehicle to remove the stolen gold buttons and sludge from the site. Unfortunately, this type of activity goes on regularly. But managements of most mining companies are reluctant to discuss theft scenarios. So information pertaining to the theft of precious metals seldom becomes a newsworthy item. An audit conducted at a mine site with a gravity circuit recommended that the gravity recovery area be shut down until adequate protection could be provided. Although it was not connected with the audit, it was necessary to shut down the gravity area for a pro¬longed period because of problems with the gravity table. In the two months that followed, gold production at the site increased by about 31 kg/month (1,000 oz/month). It is difficult to attribute all of this increase to the theft of concentrates. But there was a good chance that at least part of the increase was due to the fact that concentrates were being stolen from the gravity area.

"The proliferation of unconventional gas well development in the Northern Appalachian coalfields has raised a number of mine safety concerns. Unconventional wells, which extract gas from deep shale formations, are characterized by gas volumes and pressures that are significantly higher than those observed at many conventional wells. The gas is composed largely of methane as well as other hydrocarbons. Hundreds of planned and actively producing wells penetrate protective coal pillars or barriers within active mine boundaries, including chain pillars located between longwall panels. Gas released from a well damaged by mining-induced ground movements could pose a risk to miners by flowing into the mine atmosphere. The mining-induced ground movements that may cause well damage include conventional subsidence, non-conventional subsidence (e.g., bedding plane slip), pillar failure, and floor instability. This paper describes the known risk factors for each of the four failure mechanisms. It includes a framework that can guide the risk assessment process when mining takes place near gas or oil wells.INTRODUCTIONSouthwestern Pennsylvania has served for centuries as a producer of coal, oil, and natural gas. Coal mines were first developed in the Pittsburgh Coal Seam in the 1760s, with the first recorded mine in 1761 being the Fort Pitt Mine (Edmunds, 2002). Natural gas was introduced to the region when the Haymaker Well in Murrysville, Pennsylvania experienced a blowout on November 3, 1878. Although it was originally drilled prospecting for oil, it produced an estimated 30 million cubic feet per day of natural gas. Without well controls or pipeline infrastructure in place, it burst into flames and lit the night sky for over a year. Soon after, the Penn Fuel Company continued development of the Murrysville gas field and is credited with making Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania the first major city in the U.S. to have natural gas supplied for home and industrial uses. “Natural gas is king in Pittsburgh,” proclaimed an October 18, 1885, article in the New York Times headlined “Value of Natural Gas, Its Use Clarifies the Atmosphere at Pittsburgh” (AOGHS, 2018). By the early 1900s, coal, oil, and natural gas production had reached the southern extents of Pennsylvania in Greene County. The county had first produced oil in 1886, and shortly after began producing natural gas in 1890. By 1906, over 1,300 wells had been drilled (Stone and Clapp, 1906)."

Introduction The objective of the design and operation of a mine is to make as much money as possible within certain reasonable and responsible constraints. The imposition of constraints on the objective of maximizing profits can result in an optimum mine design. This paper deals with the maximization of profits. Optimization will be discussed in a future paper. In the mining industry, it is generally accepted that the maximum economic recovery is defined by identifying the reserves and the sequence of mining that results in maximum net present value (NPV) or discounted cash flow-rate of return (DCF-ROR), as indicated in Fig. 1 (see Lemieux, 2000). Current parametric analyses techniques, such as varying the mining costs; profit reservation; sales price or metal content, to define pit limits and mining sequence technically referred to single, double or triple parameterization, do not assure that the curve in Fig. 1 will be maximized. In defining the sequence, the first material to be mined should be the first grouping of recoverable mineral that has the highest after-tax unit value and that forms a feasible mining unit. The assumed mining of the first pit should be followed by the assumed mining of the second most profitable and practical pit or pit expansion. If this process of grouping and sequencing is followed until the profitability approaches zero, the general sequence required to extract the maximum economically recoverable reserve is identified. The curve in Fig. I is constructed by calculating the NPV for a series of sequences, each assuming operations are terminated on successively lower profit pits. If the operation ceases on a pit with too high of a profit, opportunity is lost, and the NPV is lower than the maximum. The NPV curve peaks and then starts to decline before the zero-profit pit is assumed mined. This occurs because the money invested in advanced stripping would have produced a greater return if it was invested at the dis¬count rate. The maximum economically recoverable reserve is defined by the pit limit corresponding to the maximum NPV or DCF-ROR. Pit and phase definition The real challenge of reserve definition is identifying the phasing and after-tax profit per ton, so that the curve in Fig. 1 can be plotted. The after-tax profit cannot be properly addressed until after the pits are designed, the production is scheduled and the cash flow is estimated. Throughout the years, many investigators have ad¬dressed this problem. A major thrust of the famous paper in which Lerchs and Grossman (1965) presented their algorithm was to identify a sequence that would produce a result similar to that identified in Fig. 1. Whittle's (1988) four-dimensional analysis is designed to address this issue. The author addressed this same issue in a paper presented to the 1968 Canadian Institute of Mining national convention (Lemieux, 1968). Without a relatively simple methodology to con¬struct the curve in Fig. 1, the number of iterations in a trial-and-error method becomes prohibitively burden-some. The pit designer seeks a simple pit-planning parameter that will serve as a proxy for the after-tax profit per ton used in defining the curve in Fig. 1. The designer's goal is to apply this pit-planning parameter using standard pit-wall location techniques to design a series of pits that will provide a guide to the sequencing. Common techniques used to position pit walls are strip-ratio limits, highwall incremental analysis, floating-cone methods or "maximizer" applications1. Costs, revenues, noncash charges, taxes and profits are usually structured on a unit basis for use in the pit-wall location analysis. Application of the proxy parameter using the pit-design tools should, ideally, result in the definition of pits and sequences that will maximize the curve in Fig. 1. 1 The pit-design tool frequently referred to in the literature as an "optimizer" defines a pit boundary that maximizes the value contained within based on the input parameters and the safe pit-wall angle. The optimization of the pit design involves selection of rate of production, cutoff grade, product quality and other considerations. These considerations constrain the maximization of value. Therefore, pit-design tools that maximize value should be called "maximizers."

There are many problems faced by ventilation engineers in deep underground mining operations, not the least of which is controlling miner exposure to radon gas and its daughter products. Radon gas is commonly found in uranium mining operations, but may also be present in other deep metal mines. For example, tin mines in England, iron ore mines in Sweden, gold mines in South Africa, and molybdenum mines in the U. S. have potential radon exposures. This is because uranium and accompanying radium ore are ubiquitous to the earth's crust albeit at low levels. The fact that the activity represented by one WL can be caused by a relatively low concentration of radon gas increases the difficulty of control. Since the source of the radon gas is usually widespread throughout a mine, local exhaust ventilation is not a viable control schema. The technique used to control exposure is then dilution ventilation and, in fact, huge amounts of air must be moved in order to reduce potential exposures to an acceptable level. An interesting comparison can be made of ventilation rates in different types of mines. It is estimated in modern coal mines, which are generally acknowledged to have high rates of ventilation, that about eleven tons of air are moved for each ton of ore mined. A typical operating uranium mine may have ventilation flows of 14-15 tons per ton of ore mined. This provides an idea of the scope and importance of ventilation in modern mining operations where radon is a hazard. Further pressure is put on ventilation engineers by the steady downward trend in exposure limits set by national and international standard setting agencies. Much of this tendency toward lowered standards is based upon longitudinal mortality studies of miner populations. Another important factor is the limited number of experienced miners available in the labor pool. For optimum production, it is important to have as many experienced miners underground in each shift as possible. However, the average daily exposure in a U. S. mine must be less than .3 WL to permit the miner to work underground for a full year. The ventilation system then must provide enough uncontaminated air to maintain the WL below the .3 TTL level to maximize production efficiency and minimize personnel turnover and the problems associated with it. Ultimately, the goal of the ventilation engineer and health physicist is to protect the working miner from harmful exposures based upon currently acceptable standards. U. S. Federal regulations require that in uranium mines all active work sites must be monitored every two weeks if they measure above .1 WL. Areas that have .3 WL ratios or higher must be monitored on a weekly basis until five consecutive weekly samples show the level has dropped below .3 WL. Also, exposure records must be kept for all individuals exposed to levels exceeding .3 WL. These requirements provide a strong economic incentive to have a ventilation system that minimizes exposure of any personnel. A good ventilation system requires careful planning, operation and backup in order to fulfill its mission of providing adequate clean air. Its proper operation also requires coordination with production personnel so it can be adapted as new areas in the mine open up and old areas are sealed off. The ultimate indicator of ventilation efficiency to control radon daughter exposure is, of course, monitoring working levels. Historically, this has been done using the Kusnetz, Tsivoglou, and Rolle's methods, among others. These methods all require cumbersome equipment and tedious calculations to obtain the measurements that results in WL. More important, however, they require a significant time lag between sampling and counting, typically 40-90 minutes. This time lag is, in fact, what can cause significant economic losses due to unnecessary downtime as well as high WL exposures. In a typical mining situation, a sampling technician using the Kusnetz method takes a sample, moves to the next location and takes another sample and so on. Forty to ninety minutes after the first sample, the technician will stop, run the activity count on the filter and calculate the WL. The technician may be one-half mile away or several levels removed from where the first sample was taken when it is counted. If the WL ratio is high the technician must then backtrack to the sample position. There are then two options. If the sample area is a working stage, it can be shut down or a second sample can be taken. If the first alternative is chosen; i.e., shutdown and correction of the ventilation, then another sample must be taken, followed by a forty minute wait for results. If the ventilation adjustment didn't correct the problem, then the whole process must be repeated with a minimum of forty-five minutes per sample cycle when using the Kusnetz method. It has been estimated from operating uranium mines that the cost per hour for downtime on a production slope is about $1,50O/hour. The time lag between sampling and resultant data can be very costly. If the second alternative is chosen to verify the first reading, the miners may be unnecessarily exposed to high levels while waiting for the result. Clearly, such a sampling system can be markedly improved by eliminating the excessive time lag between sampling and analysis.

Inco Limited operates 11 underground mines in the Sudbury District. The mines are located on the rim of the Sudbury Basin, an oval with the axis in the range of 27 and 60 km. The ore dips to at least 3000 m below surface. The ores are mined primarily for nickel and copper. Total ore production from underground is in excess of 55,000 tons per day. Over 40 surface fans have been installed since the late 1960's. All of the fans are adjustable pitch, axial flow units. A major factor influencing ventilation design in the last 30 years has been the introduction of diesel equipment underground. Volumes per fan have ranged from 60 to 330 (cubic metres per second), with motors from 100 to 2500 hp. Fans of the axial flow type have been in common use for main fan installations at Canadian mines for many years. The standard arrangement has been to mount these fans horizontally, i.e. with the fan shaft and the long axis of the housing horizontal. This is a natural arrangement for an underground fan, but for a surface installation, a vertically mounted fan has definite advantages. The surface area taken up by a typical vertical fan installation is generally about one quarter of that with a horizontal fan of the same capacity. (1) This is not a problem with isolated fans and flat surface outcrop sites, but where the installation is to be near existing buildings, or where there are poor surface soil conditions, space and cost considerations greatly favour vertical fans. MAIN FANS INSTALLED There are 43 main surface fans in operation at 11 mines. Twenty-seven of these fans are supply units, and 75% of them are vertical installation. The remaining 16 units are main surface exhaust fans, with predominantly horizontal installation. Within the last five years, some 20 main booster fans have been installed underground at several mines. Axial flow fans, with adjustable pitch blades, are used for both surface and underground installations. Exhaust fans are equipped with stainless steel or cast aluminum blades. Main underground fans are arranged horizontally and the majority of them have a floating shaft between the fan shaft and the motor. (2) The size of the fans in service varies from 1.8 m to 5 m in diameter, with the majority ranging from 1.8 to 2.5 m. The pressure produced by these fans varies from 0.25 kPa to 2.0 kPa. At Inco Limited, two main fans in parallel are preferred, rather than a single fan, so that if one fan fails, the remaining fan can still supply up to 70% of normal air quantities, while the damaged fan is repaired. This requires closure doors on each of the fans so the fan can be isolated in case of failure. It is more expensive than a single fan, but results in less production interruptions. The fan installations are well away from sharp inlet and outlet bends. FAN DESIGN INTEGRITY Both the mine operator and the fan manufacturer must understand that the main fan is critical to the mine operation, and that everything technically possible must be done in design and manufacture to ensure the highest degree of reliability. Some of the design parameters and criteria, based on Inco experience, are outlined and discussed below. RESONANT FREQUENCIES AND HOUSING MODEL ANALYSIS Any fan assembly will have many different resonant frequencies. It is a challenge to the designer to arrive at a design in which forcing frequencies do not coincide with any of these resonant frequencies to produce unacceptable vibration levels in operation. Finite element analysis is a useful tool that can be used to identify the most critical of these, so that housing and blade stiffness can be adjusted to change any resonances that might be close to forcing frequencies. Shaft critical speeds should be at least 25% above the fan operating speed, and there should be sufficient separation between other resonant and forcing frequencies to avoid excitation that might result in high vibration levels. QUALITY ASSURANCE Radiographic Blade Examination Mine fan blades are normally cast in small lots. To ensure that the castings are sound, a full radiographic examination is recommended in the highly stressed lower 1/3 of the blade.

INTRODUCTION The rapidity of onset, rate of increase, and magni¬tude of loads in an underground support system can be measured using load cells or pressure cells, whichever is appropriate to the type of support. These instruments should be installed at the various instrumented station locations immediately after excavation. If the loading of a member is of interest, the load should be measured, whereas if the deflection or strain of a member is of interest, the strain should be mea¬sured. It makes as little sense to use a load cell to allow computation of strain as it does to measure the strain and then back calculate the load. Tunnel steel set de¬signers today invariably rely on the early work of Karl Terzaghi, the basis for which is load, so load measure¬ment should be the main concern. The current trend of using strain gages on steel sup¬port systems stems from the inability by some to eval¬uate unusual loading conditions caused by uneven block¬ing. In fact, uneven blocking will obscure almost any attempt (whether with load cells or strain gages) to properly evaluate support performance. The load curve in Fig. I shows the development of a characteristic early peak load sometimes called the "rear abutment load" seen in many underground open¬ings. It is thought that the peak reflects the coupling of the rock and the support system, and that the magnitude will increase until some yielding, or minor failure, of the support system occurs. At that time, the slight deforma¬tion of the support system promotes the formation of minute shears in the opening walls, and these shears tend to distribute stress between the support system and the adjacent rock in proportion to the relative rigidity of the support elements and the rock. In normal rock, as a result of this stress redistribu¬tion, subsequent load magnitudes generally do not reach the magnitude of the early peak load. In physically unstable (squeezing) or chemically un¬stable (swelling) rock, however, the loads experienced after passage of the early peak load may in fact show a slow, continuous increase. One of the very important purposes of load instrumentation is to provide the means for recognizing such long-term adverse trends, thus enabling the proper remedial steps to be taken. Another purpose of load instrumentation is to pro¬vide a comparison between the magnitudes of the early peak load and the subsequent stable load. The ratio of these two loads is analogous to a safety factor, and may be used to evaluate the efficiency and economy of the support system design. Aside from considerations of economy, it may be well to design support systems which do not have excessively high ratios of early peak load to subsequent stable load. Should these ratios be exces¬sively high, the support system may be so rigid that the yield or failure associated with stress redistribution may occur with explosive violence. Load cells for use in mines, tunnels, and on con¬struction projects come in many forms. Almost all, however, employ the same procedures for installation, readout, etc. Therefore the following comments are almost universal in application. LOAD CELL INSTALLATION Load cells should be installed with bases parallel to the surfaces against which they bear. Care must be taken to orient the cells so that their signal cables are protected from accidental damage as a result of con¬struction, maintenance, or cleanup activities. Most electronic load cells are compensated for tem¬perature variations likely to be encountered during nor¬mal operations. However, if a large difference is an¬ticipated between the calibration temperature [21°C (70°F)] and the average operating temperature, the cells should be conditioned to the operating temperature for at least 8 hr prior to installation. This is to insure that the initial reading, made under no-load conditions prior to installation, provides a stable value to which subse¬quent measurements can be referred. Hydraulic load cells tend to be temperature sensitive and should be used with that in mind. Also, hydraulic load cells tend to be soft compared to electronic types and will sometimes allow movement to take place in a system intended to be semirigid. Furthermore, hydrau¬lic load cells tend to be difficult to read remotely. Care must be taken to use bearing plates on both sides of load cells which are sufficiently rigid and of high enough bearing capacity to prevent bending and crush¬ing under load. This is very important with tieback load cells (basically a ring of steel) which can easily dig into bearing plates. MAINTENANCE AND TROUBLESHOOTING Except for a direct hit by a miner's axe or flyrock from a blast, most hydraulic load cells are nearly in¬destructible and require little, if any, maintenance. Hy¬draulic oil on the bearing plates is a good indication of a leak and the need for corrective action. Field maintenance of electronic load cells involves protecting the instrument and signal cable from mechani¬cal damage and from unnecessary exposure to dirt and moisture, and recognizing and correcting damage and the effects of normal wear and tear.

INTRODUCTION Practical experience in mines with known presence of radon daughters in the mine atmosphere in Canada and elsewhere shows that a very high concentration builds up in an unventilated dead end heading. As Holaday et al1 observed, even a minimal air movement results in a drastic reduction in radon daughter concentration. It is therefore obvious that the main objective of radon daughter control in the working environment is to design the ventilation system providing an optimized flow of fresh air into the workplace, resulting in acceptable climatic conditions and achieving radon daughter concentrations resulting in exposures as low as reasonably achievable. BASIC OBJECTIVES Large mining companies, having extensive material resources and professional expertise, have utilized elaborate electrical modelling in the design of mine ventilation systems as early as 1950 (coal mining industry in Europe) and with the advance of computer modelling techniques, their utilization in ventilation systems design is on the increase. Unfortunately, these methods are usually not available to small mining companies and even the large companies might not achieve the fullest benefit from utilizing them, if proper limiting factors are not considered in the modelling. When an evaluation of a ventilation system of a mine is undertaken in literature, a measure of the amount of air supplied underground per one ton of ore mined is used as an indicator of the efficiency of the ventilation system. Yet, even the greatest amount of air forced into the mine might not result in an acceptable working environment if a proper distribution of this air into individual working places is not achieved. The volume and the age of the air are probably the two most important factors in achieving acceptable radon daughter concentrations in the workplace, but other factors also have to be considered. DIRECTOR MINE - ALCAN, NEWFOUNDLAND FLUORSPAR WORKS ST. LAWRENCE, NEWFOUNDLAND, CANADA Ventilation To illustrate the effects of the design of the ventilation system on the control of radon daughter concentration, let us review the gradual development of the ventilation system of this mine from the earlier years of its development up until its final years of operation. This mine, located near the community of St. Lawrence on the south coast of Burin Peninsula was developed in the late thirties and reached full production by 1942. Unfortunately as was customary at that time, the only source of ventilation was a natural draft. The mine was extremely wet, and no significant attention was initially given to possible health effects of dust. It was not until the mid-fifties, when a number of cases of silicosis had surfaced, that de Villiers and Windish2 observed a significant increase of lung cancer incidence among the miners in comparison to its incidence among the general population of Newfoundland. Suspicions regarding radiation as a cause of the lung cancer were expressed, but it was only in surveys taken in late 1959 and early 1960 that Windish3 and Little4 established the presence of radon daughters in the mine atmosphere in very high concentrations. Windish, de Villiers and Hurley suggested that the most likely source of the radon in the mine was the mine water which dissolved radon during its passage through the granitic country rock in the surrounding geological area. This conclusion was confirmed by analyses of water from various areas of the mine by the Atomic Energy Canada Limited laboratories. The radon values in the samples varied from 4,240 to 12,850 pCi/L5. Following the discovery of the presence of radon daughters in the mine, the company took speedy action to install mechanical ventilation for the mine. The system was not designed as a total unit, but fans were installed rather on a trial and error basis. The basic system installation began in March 1960 and was completed by 1962. It remained basically unchanged with only minor modifications until August 1973 when a wholly new, redesigned ventilation system was implemented. A schematic section of the mine and its ventilation system for the period prior to March 1960 is given in Figure "A", for the period 1960-1973 in Figure "B", and for the period after August 1973 in Figure "C". The ventilation system prior to 1960 is not known. All workings of the mine were ventilated only by natural ventilation. If any measurements of airflows at different or any times of the year ever existed, no records have been preserved. The very minimal natural ventilation was augmented by "blowing" air from compressed air supply lines and exhaust air from drills. It is known that the compressor capacities of the mine were limited and therefore no significant air movement was probably created by the "blowing".

Introduction Since the Hardy Cross numerical algorithm was applied to the solution of mine ventilation networks, numerous developments have taken place in ventilation network analysis procedures. The Newton-Raphson method, the linear theory method and the second-order approximation method are three of the additional approaches that have been applied. The efficiency of a ventilation network analysis procedure depends not only on the method of solving the system of equations derived from ventilation networks but also on the method of deriving the equations through selection of the meshes. This paper investigates the impacts of three mesh selection methods on the efficiencies of four ventilation network procedures. The minimum-resistance spanning tree method is the most popular procedure for selecting meshes. The shortest-path method was suggested by Epp and Fowler (1970) for improvement of the Newton-Raphson method. The minimum-resistance-path method is suggested here as the third method of selecting meshes. The effects of these three methods on the Hardy Cross method, the Newton-Raphson method, the linear theory method and the second-order approximation method are analyzed in this paper. These network analysis methods have been summarized in the paper by Kim and Mutmansky (1991). Mesh selection methods A procedure for mine ventilation network solution based on mesh equations typically consists of two steps: • the mesh selection step and • the network solution step. The mesh selection step establishes a set of independent equations to solve the network. The resulting equations are nonlinear. One method of solving nonlinear equations is to linearize the equations and iteratively solve these linear equations. The four analysis methods previously discussed in this paper use this approach. The linear equations required for solution can be written in matrix form as: P•dQ = dF (1) where P is the pseudo-resistance matrix, Q is the quantity matrix, and F is the Jacobian matrix (Kim and Mutmansky, 1991). The efficiency of the solution method depends on the characteristics of the P matrix, which in turn depend on the method of selecting meshes. To understand the impacts of the mesh selection methods on the efficiency of the ventilation network analysis procedures, the characteristics of the P matrix must be understood first. The diagonal elements of the P matrix, m in number, are the sums of the pseudo-resistances of the branches contained in the m meshes necessary for solution. The off-diagonal elements are the sums of the pseudo-resistances of the branches shared by two meshes. For example, P12 (first row, second column element of the P matrix) is the sum of the pseudo-resistances of the branches common to mesh 1 and mesh 2. When solving the system of equations expressed in Eq. (1), three of the iterative procedures (the Newton-Raphson, the linear theory and the second-order approximation methods) use the direct factorization method (Burden and Faires, 1985) on the P matrix. When the direct factorization method is used, the computational efficiency is enhanced by larger diagonal elements and a sparser P matrix. Generally, the sparsity of the P matrix is more important than the size of the diagonal elements. There is no known mathematical method of predicting the efficiency of these procedures, but heuristic methods can be used to study the efficiency. The Hardy Cross algorithm applies the Gauss-Seidel method of splitting the P matrix and applies the Newton-Raphson procedure. The efficiency of the Hardy Cross method depends on the spectral radius of the matrix[[D-L]-1U], where D is the diagonal, L is the lower triangle and U is the upper triangle of the P matrix for the Newton-Raphson method (Ortega, 1972). The smaller the value of the spectral radius, the faster the convergence. As with the other three methods, larger diagonal elements and a sparser matrix aid in faster convergence. With the Hardy Cross method, however, the size of the diagonal elements is more important than the sparsity of the matrix. Remembering that each of the diagonal elements of the P matrix is the sum of the pseudo-resistances of the branches in a mesh and that each off-diagonal element is the sum of the pseudo-resistances of the branches shared by two different meshes, the following strategies can be used: • Avoid having branches with larger resistance values shared by multiple meshes. This increases the size of the diagonal elements and reduces the chance of off-diagonal elements being large.

Much criticism has been levelled at bacterial oxidation over the quantities of air required for successful operation. Examination of the oxidation reactions and the assumptions concerning oxygen transfer made in the literature (1) indicate that the aeration requirements can be much less than those beirig suggested. Observations made on a large scale pilot test have confirmed reasonable aeration levels in extended site operation over a six month period. These aeration levels have implications for the engineering design and the power needed for aeration and agitation. Thus, these parameters effect both capital and operating costs as well as influencing the complexity of the design and normal operation. A number of companies have developed bacterial oxidation cultures intended for commercial ·expl oi tat.ion ( 2, 3, 4). Most of these cultures have been based on Thiobacillus and operate at temperatures between 30°c and 40°c. This temperature range limits their application in hotter regions unless means for both heating and cooling are provided in the design. Thiobacil!us cultures are also reported as not able to oxidize arsenic (III), which may limit the application of these cultures to successfully treat arsenopyritic ores and concentrates (5). BacTech (Australia) Pty Ltd has developed a culture which operates at temperatures above 4o0 c and which has been tested in a large site based continuous pilot plant at up to 55°c over a six month period. The culture showed resistance to high levels of soluble arsenic, allowing the arsenic to be retained in solution for control led precipitation and disposal. Data for. the arsenic precipitates indicated that these waste solids were relatively stable and, under the correct circumstances, were suitable for disposal into tailings dams without causing environmental problems.
