"Construction of the longest road tunnel in Mexico is part of Acapulco’s alternate roadway to the scenic roadway project. This article provides a brief summary regarding details of the construction since the project began. Work was done by skilled engineers and Mexican workers that includes outstanding execution of the work in an urban and tourist area. This project will have a strong impact on the steady development of the port of Acapulco.Project locationAcapulco’s Alternate Roadway Project is currently under construction in the city of Acapulco, located in the Guerrero state of Mexico. It is an 8-km (5-mile) long roadway that starts at the Icacos neighborhood, heading toward Acapulco’s airport, crossing a drill-and-blast tunnel that is 3,160 m (10,350 ft) long under Veladero Park, a mountainous area. The tunnel overburden reaches a depth of 380 m (1,250 ft) approximately at the central point of the horizontal alignment, and continues with a 4-km (2.5-mile) long elevated road to connect to the existing Viaducto Diamante toll road (Fig. 1).Tunnel construction has already been finished using two portals for drilling and blasting operations; Brisamar Portal on the west side and Cayaco Portal on the east side (Fig. 2).Geometric dataOnly two main excavation cross-sections were considered in the executive design. The first one corresponds to the running tunnel for a three-lane vehicle section, with crosssection areas between 120 and 130 m2 (1,290 and 1,400 sq ft) taking into consideration different geological and geotechnical conditions to be encountered (Fig. 3).The second one corresponds to eight emergency bays, each one 50 m (164 ft) long, laid down within the tunnel outline, located at 400 m (1,312 ft) from each one with excavation cross-sections between 156 to 169 m2 (1,680 to 1,820 sq ft), in accordance to geological and geotechnical conditions to be encountered (Fig. 4).The tunnel’s horizontal alignment is completely straight, having a small curve within the vertical alignment on Cayaco portal, because there were some differences in levels when tunnel excavation started. Tunnel slopes were designed in such a way that rainwater does not run down into the tunnel at any time."

The phenomenon of zero order production of fines associated with the batch comminution of monosize feeds in tumbling mills has been examined in the context of the size discretized population balance model. It has been shown that the model admits zero order production kinetics only in an approximate sense. The necessary and sufficient conditions for approximate zero order production of fines have been obtained. As these conditions cannot be expressed in terms of the model parameters Sj and Bi,j alone,. several examples have been used to illustrate some of the important characteristics of the zero order production systems. One of the important characteristics of these systems has been identified as a "weak necessary condition", and the other as a " favourable condition ".

The U.S. coal industry has long utilized the pillar-extraction mining technique as a method for maximizing coal recovery. Like longwall mining, it causes large-scale movements that progressively propagate from mine-level to the ground surface and may affect the groundwater regime, surface drainage and surface structures. The U.S. Department of Energy, in an effort to foster in- creased use of total extraction mining techniques, has recognized the need for a better understanding of these movements that will lead to a greater compatibility between coal mining and present and future land use. As part of that goal, GAI Consultants, Inc. is currently in- stalling instrumentation to monitor the ground movements associated with pillar extraction mining at Kitt Energy Corporation's No. 1 mine in northern West Virginia.

Many years ago, a relationship was established between dust inhalation and pneumoconiosis. Since then, various government agencies have regulated crystalline and amorphous forms of silica material in the workplace. In 1987, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified crystalline silica as a probable carcinogen. With this listing, crystalline silica became a regulated substance under the Hazard Communication Standard. The minerals and chemicals industries have responded in various ways. They have: • developed worker and user training programs and literature; • labeled products with appropriate warnings; • continued to implement dust reduction programs; and • developed meaningful epidemiological studies of workers. • begun development of reliable analytical methods for measuring crystalline silica at the 0.1 % threshold level; Background Silicosis historically has been the major health hazard resulting from exposure to crystalline silica. Silicosis is the scarring of the lung from excessive exposure to crystalline silica. It has been recognized as an occupational disease for more than 2000 years, since early Greek physicians noted the respiratory problems of miners, stonecutters, and quarrymen who were exposed to excessive quantities of mineral dust. During the industrial revolution, the incidence of the disease was greatly increased by the use of machinery that increased dust levels. Subsequently, the need for dust control was recognized and measures were instituted. Silicosis is characterized by progressive breathlessness on exertion and develops over the course of years. Talc has been the focus of recent civil litigation based on claims that asbestos minerals exist in talc deposits and therefore have caused asbestos-related diseases in those who have regularly used talc products. Such litigation, and ensuing confusion over the petrology and asbestos content of these deposits, challenges the talc mining industry in Montana and elsewhere in the world. The talc deposits in southwest Montana were formed by hydrothermal alteration of dolomitic marbles and are still actively mined. In general, talc formed by hydrothermal alteration of preexisting carbonate rocks is known to be nearly monomineralic and lacking in amphiboles. This paper includes data from analyses of representative ore samples from this mining region in southwest Montana. The results conclude that the presence of asbestos minerals — both amphiboles and chrysotile — is unlikely and that the ores are nearly monomineralic, as expected. Samples were characterized using a suite of analytical methods, namely, powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and electron microprobe analyses, which allowed us to determine the minerals present and the formation process. Our data and interpretations suggest that previous identification of asbestos minerals in these deposits is not accurate.

This study presents the results of synthesizing monolithic siliconoxynitride, Si2N2O, ceramic from a mixture composed of reclaimed silicon and natural desert sand by using the nitriding combustion synthesis method. Single-phase Si2N2O powder was prepared by the combustion of a mixture composed of silicon and pulverized sand in 3 MPa nitrogen gas. The combustion reaction completed in 2 min and the combustion temperature reached 1577°C.The as-synthesized Si2N2O powder is agglomerate of fine particles with sizes < 5 µm and has various morphologies; rod-like and irregular crystals, irregular kinking, hollow crystals and grown pseudo-hexagonal prismatic crystals. Porous Si2N2O compacts (24.5–47.1% porosities) were fabricated from the synthesized Si2N2O powder at different calcia-alumina additives (5–20 wt%) by normal sintering at 1500°C for 1 hr in N2atmosphere.They showed superior oxidation-resistance at high temperatures up to 1500°C in an oxidizing atmosphere of Ar/O2/H2O(70/20/10 kPa).Near-full dense Si2N2O compacts were also successfully fabricated from the synthesized Si2N2O powder with 5 wt% oxide additives by using the spark plasma sintering at 1600°C.DenseSi2N2O had good mechanical properties (18.7 GPa Vickers hardness, 3.3 MPa.m1/2fracture toughness and 363 MPa strength) and excellent chemical and oxidation resistance.

To investigate how deformation failure occurs in roadways surrounding rock, the relationship between cohesion and plastic shear strain of the strain softening model and the equation for calculating the shear strain of a rock mass in the ultimate elastic state are derived. On this basis, the equality relationship between the built-in maximum shear strain increment and cohesion of FLAC 3D was established to give a more intuitive picture of how the cohesion of the roadway surrounding rock changes. The cohesion attenuation and deformation of the surrounding rock are analysed. The results show that significant deformation in the roadway surrounding rock was caused primarily by the development of large areas of highly softened plastic rock masses towards residual strength. Taking the floor overhead-mining roadway under different rock pillar thicknesses (RPTs) in the Xinglongzhuang Coal Mine as an example, the results demonstrate that investigating the cohesion distribution inside the roadway during mining operation can provide a more intuitive, more accurate description of the degree of failure of the surrounding rock at any point of the roadway, as well as the overall failure range of the surrounding rock. The simulation agrees well with the field monitoring result and seems to be more practically useful than simply analysing the coverage of shear plastic zones. Based on the failure range and degree of roadway surrounding rock with different RPTs, three support schemes are designed. Classified support was implemented for roadways under different RPTs, which realizes the effective control of roadway surrounding rock.

The recently completed in-pit crushing and conveying project at Phelps Dodge&apos;s Morenci Mine is rated among the world&apos;s leading materials handling projects. The operation involves the crushing and transport of more than 109 kt/ d (120,000 stpd) of copper ore, using regenerative conveyors capable of providing more than 5.5 MW (7000 hp) of equivalent electrical energy. The Morenci Mine is located 330 km (200 miles) east of Phoenix, AZ. Phelps Dodge Corp. owns an 85% interest in the mine. The remaining 15% is owned by Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. and Sumitomo Corp. Copper has been continuously produced from the Morenci district since the late 1800s. Until 1989, run-of-mine ore was transported from active mining faces to the Morenci and Metcalf concentrators by truck and rail haulage. In that year, a system of in-pit, semi-portable crushing plants and overland conveyors was commissioned. This substantially reduced truck haulage and effectively eliminated rail haulage in the pit. The system used two semi-portable, in-pit crushing stations equipped with 60/89 gyratory crushers. The crushed ore from both plants reported to the first of two overland belt conveyors, arranged in series, for transport from the pit to a coarse ore stockpile. The system was "backed-up" by existing locomotive rail haulage.

Phelps Dodge Mining’s Bagdad, AZ copper facility uses a large series of cone crushers and ball mills to reduce copper ore to very fine particles. The solids are mixed with water to create a slurry. Milk of lime is added to this slurry to raise the pH. Small amounts of reagents are also added, including a frother to make bubbles, as well as a collector chemical that causes the copper minerals to stick to those bubbles. This material is pumped to a series of froth flotation cells to concentrate the copper. Air is blown into the flotation cell tank and the pulp mixture is vigorously agitated. Rising bubbles carry the copper particles over the edge of the flotation tank. The bubbles break after they flow over the edge.

"Mitigation may be considered a hurdle when it comes to environmental permitting. For complex projects with site specific mitigation plans, the time to devise those plans and get them approved can be a long and costly endeavor. However, mitigation options are expanding and the mitigation banking industry has grown tremendously over the last two decades, helping projects move forward with less debate. Mining companies are recognizing the value that mitigation banks provide in helping to shore up project timelines and costs. Where possible, companies are taking advantage of the opportunities to buy credits from thirdparty providers offering mitigation bank credits. In some instances, mining companies are taking matters into their own hands by establishing mitigation banks to realize their own mitigation freedom. That can have its advantages and disadvantages, as discussed below. All in all, the expansion of mitigation options has streamlined the permitting process, introduced flexibility, improved project permitting timelines and loosened the permitting girdle.Compensatory mitigationCompensatory mitigation involves actions taken to offset unavoidable adverse impacts to wetlands, streams and other aquatic resources and authorized by Clean Water Act section 404 permits and other permits. As such, compensatory mitigation is a critical tool in helping the federal government meet the longstanding national goal of ‘‘no net loss’’ of Waters of the U.S., both in acreage and function.Section 314 of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2004 required the Secretary of the Army, acting through the Chief of Engineers, to issue regulations “establishing performance standards and criteria for the use, consistent with Section 404 of the Clean Water Act, of on-site, offsite, and in-lieu fee mitigation and mitigation banking.” The provision also required that those regulations ‘‘maximize available credits and opportunities for mitigation, provide flexibility for regional variations in wetland conditions, functions and values, and apply equivalent standards and criteria to each type of compensatory mitigation’’ (73 FR 19595). The result was the Final Rule on Compensatory Mitigation for Losses of Aquatic Resources issued in 2008 (33 CFR Parts 325 and 332).”"

The Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Co.(CC&V) celebrated completion of a two-year, $168.5-million expansion and capital improvement program. An open house celebration was held in the historic mining town of Victor, CO on Oct. 4, 2002. Hundreds of townspeople, the press and other invited guests from the mining industry joined the employees of CC&V in the celebration. The event included mine tours, company displays and a barbecue picnic, complete with a country and western band. The Cresson Mine is located about 40 km (25miles) west of Colorado Springs, CO between the towns of Cripple Creek and Victor. The mine is the only large-scale gold mining operation in Colorado and now employs about 300 (ME, October 2001, pp.21-28). The operation is a joint venture between Anglo-Gold (Colorado) (67%), based in Greenwood Village, CO, and Golden Cycle Gold (33%), based in Colorado Springs. CC&V is managed by AngloGold North America. AngloGold North America is the U.S. subsidiary of AngloGold, the world’s second largest gold mining producer. AngloGold is based in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The major waste product of the alkaline extraction of alumina from bauxite [Bayer Process] is known as red-mud. Approximately, a ton of red-mud is produced for every two tons of bauxite mined. The red-mud produced from Jamaican bauxite is rich in hematite, alumina and titanium oxide. It has been shown that over 90-wt. pct. alumina can be recovered from red-mud by soda-ash sintering and caustic leaching. Hematite can be carbothermically reduced with a degree of metallization of over 94 pct resulting in attempts for magnetic separation. These separations are desirable in the notion that there is no waste product generated from this type of processing and consequently an opportunity for complete utilization of the waste material. Conversely, the pre-separated material could be charged through the tuyeres in an iron blast furnace or smelted to produce pig iron. If smelted, the concentration of titanium oxide in the slag will be significantly high justifying its recovery by established acid-leach process. This paper describes the results of alumina recovery and the plans for titanium oxide recovery from red-mud. In addition, the situation of ongoing efforts in iron extraction, particularly, the method of magnetic separation of the reduced material. The problems associated with the use of reduced red-mud as an alternative to direct-reduced iron [DRI] has also been discussed. Critical assessment of the recovery sequence chosen for the products has been described based on economics.

The design of separation circuits can be a complex, labor-intensive and costly process. While the engineer?s experience along with extensive data sets and simulation are crucial tools for determining the final solution, a more fundamental approach is suitable to compare preliminary options and reduce the number of potential alternatives. In light of this need, the authors have developed the Circuit Analysis Reduction Tool (CART?). This software package relies on the fundamental principles of linear circuit analysis; however, the solution methodology has been streamlined to automatically incorporate stream splitting and unique separation performance for each unit. The resulting tool allows preliminary analysis of circuit designs without the need of detailed feed characterization. In addition to the basic analytical approach, this paper supports the veracity of the methodology with several simulated examples for various separation models.

The US Constitution provides for regulation by the states for protecting the public&apos;s safety, health, and welfare. Hence, in the eyes of the law of all states today, this is the sole justification for registration of professional engineers. Wyoming was the first state to register professional engineers in 1907, to correct abuses of incompetent or fraudulent practices in surveying and real estate. Public safety and health are most directly affected by civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering. Other branches of engineering have a profound effect on the public welfare, including investors, and safety and health of employees. No arguments, pro or con, are valid except in relation to the registration laws of various states. Code of Ethics Few would argue the desirability of requiring conformance with a code of ethics. A major problem lies in enforcing compliance, since protecting the public demands a high standard of competence, yet assessing competence gets confused with restraint of trade. Bidding engineering work on price competition can lead to pressure to cut corners on engineering quality, and was therefore discouraged by codes of ethics. The Supreme Court, in a suit against the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), barred any engineering society from such bidding restriction. It has, however, upheld the right of states to impose codes of acceptable practice as part of registration laws. For example, Texas Canon I reads, "The engineer&apos;s paramount professional responsibility should be the safety, health, and welfare of the general public." Anything less makes the code practically meaningless, but there are potential conflicts of interest in many engineering organizations. How can conflicts be handled? Any corporation could improve its public image by adopting a policy that each employed PE should, without fear of recrimination, record in writing over his seal any problem or flaw in any design that comes to his attention. The policy should further require that his superior provide him a written reply pointing out that the "flaw" is accepted as requiring correction or as a calculated risk, or overruled as erroneous or as a difference of opinion. Errors in calculation of judgment are inevitable. Despite this, there are limits to how much time and money should be spent to eliminate them. It is difficult, however, to see any excuse for failure to conscientiously evaluate the opinion of a PE. This may be an impossible ideal, but how else can the profession or the industry have credibility? The National Council of Engineering Examiners (NCEE) has a code of ethics one presumably subscribes to by signing an application to write a Principles and Practices examination. However, NCEE has none of the power of enforcement that is available through state boards of registration. Registration Qualifications Qualifications are set by the laws of the states. In general, they require passage of an eight-hour examination in fundamentals, preferably at graduation, and, later, one in principles and practices. The examinations are compiled and distributed by NCEE. This system provides for a high degree of uniformity and reciprocity. States set the education and experience levels (typically four years after graduation) required by those desiring to write the principles and practices examination. Examinations The principles and practices examination calls for answering eight of 20 equal weight questions; one on engineering economics, 19 on engineering. Economics may enter into engineering questions, but only provided the question is not answerable by an economist without engineering training. In preparing examinations, NCEE strives to use questions that require some judgment and can be more effectively answered by someone with four years experience beyond college. "In the recent past, the mining industry has witnessed a substantial increase in the numbers of fatalities occurring at metal and nonmetal mine sites, but it is unclear why this is occurring. One possible explanation is that workers struggle with identifying worksite hazards and accurately assessing the associated risk. The purpose of this research was to explore this possibility within the mining industry and to more fully understand stone, sand and gravel (SSG) mine workers’ thoughts, understandings and perceptions of worksite hazards and risks. Eight mine workers were interviewed and asked to identify common hazards they come across when doing their jobs and to then discuss their perceptions of the risks associated with those identified hazards. The results of this exploratory study indicate the importance of workers’ jobrelated experience as it applies to hazard identification and risk perception, particularly their knowledge of or familiarity with a task, whether or not they had personal control over that task, and the frequency with which they perform that task. IntroductionAccording to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA, 2015a), 37 mine workers were fatally injured in accidents at metal and nonmetal mine sites between October 2013 and January 2015, following a record low of 16 in 2012 and in 2011. In 2014 alone, 29 mine workers were fatally injured at a metal or nonmetal mine site, and 52 percent of these fatalities occurred at a surface stone, sand or gravel (SSG) mine. In January 2015, Joseph A. Main, Assistant Secretary of Labor for Mine Safety and Health wrote to stakeholders in the metal and nonmetal mining community and identified several areas where improvement was necessary to promote the health and safety of mine workers. One area identified was an increased focus on “daily and effective workplace exams to find and fix hazards” (MSHA, 2015b).Hazard detection is challenging in the mining industry, despite the existence of regulation. Mining is a major undertaking involving the use of complex heavy machinery, equipment and processes as well as numerous and diverse worker activities that take place in a dynamic, challenging environment (Scharf et al., 2001). In other industries that are similarly dynamic and unpredictable, such as the construction industry, a large proportion of hazards go undetected (Carter and Smith, 2006). It is critical that miners are able to both recognize worksite hazards and accurately assess the risk associated with the hazards, because their health and safety depend on their deciding whether and how to remove hazards and mitigate risks."

Injuries due to work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are not uncommon in heavy industry like mining. Researchers acknowledged that occupational exposure to ergonomic risk factors is the chief causative factor in the development ofWMSDs. The aim of this study was to perform an ergonomic assessment of musculoskeletal disorders among surface mine workers in India. Standardized Nordic Questionnaire was used to collect subjective response from 500 workers. A stratified random sampling method according to surface mining work activity type was used to obtain the sample. Data was collected by means of a structured questionnaire, and the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to analyze data using descriptive and inferential statistical methods. A response rate of 85% was obtained out of 500 targeted groups. TheWMSDs prevalence for the 12-month period was estimated to be 44.23%. The mean and standard deviation of workers’ age were 41.31and 8.927, respectively. The study has shown that the operators of dumpers, dozers, and graders along with electricians were found to be the most susceptible to developWMSD problems. Among the most affected body parts, back disorder reported the highest. Further, it was found that working with static posture over the longer duration has a significant association with the lower back disorder (with p = 0.020) and bouncing and jarring has also significantly associated with the lower back disorder (with p = 0.023). Similarly, a significant association was found between repetitive work and neck pain (with p = 0.016). The study depicted a significant association between ergonomic hazards and WMSDs, like working with prolonged static posture, bouncing and jarring, and repetitive work.

The proposed Flambeau Mining Project is based on a high grade copper deposit located approximately one mile southwest of Ladysmith, Wisconsin. The project involves only the mining, crushing, and shipping of ore to facilities outside of Wisconsin for processing. The Wisconsin environmental regulations include provisions for identifying wetlands, the requirements for minimizing the disturbance of wetlands, and the need to establish new wet-lands to replace any wetlands which have to be disturbed.

Working in gassy ground conditions is an everyday occurrence for the U.S. coal mining industry. As tunneling operators begin to venture into projects that expose them to the additional hazard of potentially explosive atmospheres, lessons learned by the mining industry over years of experience should be transferred into this industry. This paper will present practices developed by the U.S. coal mining industry for dealing with the problem of excavating material in potentially explosive atmospheres. Procedures will be discussed that can be used to detect and quantify gas prior to mining that have application to the construction industry. Degasification or drainage practices, including predrainage from vertical and horizontal boreholes, will be discussed. Also, ventilation practices commonly used in the mining industry will be presented.
